This might be due to the fact that on my first playthrough I ended up creating a Rook more emotionally guarded than any of the companions except Minrathous-route Lucanis and perhaps Neve, so I was primed to look for it, but I never got the sense that the companions don’t care for Rook (the thought never even occurred to me until I saw other people post about it) — to me it seems much more like it’s Rook who keeps the last bit of distance, Rook who pulls away when the companions try to extend their care or worry too directly, who keeps themselves slightly apart. (Rook who is so full of grief they cannot know as grief and thus process that there’s no room inside them to let anything else all the way in, perhaps.) They deflect and flinch back when someone gets too close or approaches them too overtly about their feelings — especially when it brushes up against the theme of grief. They can offer care to all the companions who are grieving, come along to any number of funerals as emotional support, but the moment someone turns that towards them they shut that shit down Immediately, like when Taash almost gives the whole game away with ‘Like you’d know? You act like you haven’t lost anyone!’ and Rook just blandly responds ‘We’re talking about you’ and doesn’t engage. But they can also admit that they struggle with accepting compliments, or knowing what to say, or having confidence in themselves without Varric’s help.
Despite all their determination and even in their most stoic no-nonsense incarnation, Rook is awkward, with the struggles that entails. Someone who is eager and happy to be the helper wherever they can, and helplessly unequipped to know how to be the helpee, as it were. It’s not that the companions don’t return Rook’s attachment to them, there’s MUCH more of a ‘okay so what are the ways you will allow me to be good to you??’ desperation of care vibe behind all their invitations to conversations and hangouts together, to my mind. They bring Rook to their favourite places and share the things they love with them, they ask to spend time together (many times just to have their company, not because they have a problem they need help with! Sometimes the problem arises anyway b/c video game quest narrative of course), they bring them out for some direly needed grass touching, they introduce them to their families. Everyone is clearly getting the sense that Rook does Not want to talk about Varric especially (this is in fact what Harding says in banter, if she’s still alive after the reveal :’( ), but they are absolutely SCRAMBLING to find ways to show that they’re there for them even so. AND from the companions’ perspective, with the situation as they have the means to understand it, accepting that Rook isn’t ready to have that conversation and backing off is also a kind thing to do. (tl;dr: To Me Rook is that weirdly socialized friend who is a great hang once they’re actually there but you have to directly invite them or they don’t quite know how to initiate the contact themselves lol)
Just as a crushing sense of responsibility for their family is a trait that is built into Hawke no matter how you play them or how you make them respond to that, I feel like Rook — however helpful and earnest, warm, charming, jocular, stoic or straightforward they seem at a surface glance — is always someone who struggles deeply with connecting to themselves and other people. (Emotional Intimacy, the Final Frontier.) As, indeed, is the case with all of the Veilguard companions too! It’s clearly a deliberate theme. These are all lonely people struggling with their sense of identity and belonging in some sort of way. AND having, working on and eventually starting to overcome these difficulties also makes Rook a direct foil for Solas, who doesn’t learn that lesson unless you corner him at the end of the world to force feed him his medicine lmao. They don’t manage to break out of the regret prison under their own steam, it’s because even struggling and grieving they have managed to create mutual bonds with other people who show up for them in turn now — and with all the protective walls of denial around what happened to Varric crumbling and making them less of a stranger to themselves, Rook is finally able to let them. An outcome Solas seemingly didn’t even consider to guard against, because he’s become that deeply entrenched in his loneliness, the utter isolation of the self — he can no longer truly imagine an alternative. (It’s not that he can’t form these bonds, obviously, it’s that he resolutely refuses to value them. Whether it’s because he feels like he doesn’t deserve it or out of a need for control or the martyr complex where he must sacrifice everything he loves on the sacrificial pyre of fixing his mistakes, all of the above and more, the result is the same. Mind!Varric, who I think is mostly Solas speaking, even calls this out directly. So yet again a situation where he has some self awareness about it and it doesn’t help At All haha. Solas falls to the temptation of making people into tools again and again and again, no matter how many times it comes back to bite him in the ass and the eternal solitude it traps him in.)
And that deep deep loneliness… There but for the grace of… well the theological state of thedas being what it is right now, let’s just go with the grace of Something, Presumably go you as well, Rook. The same capacity/tendency to pull away from connection clearly lives in them as well in some form (again, for whatever reason and with whatever motivations and instincts behind it for any individual Rook). Solas and Rook coming together to create a blood magic paper doll of the mind Varric in response to acute loss and loneliness is one of the most deep , deeply fucked up and invasive acts of intimacy I’ve ever contemplated. I don’t think that’s accidental, there’s something There’s Something Wrong With You (there’s something wrong with you that’s also wrong with me (derogatory)) here that resonates no matter how both parties would hate to hear it. (A fitting legacy for Varric and his wild ‘I made my best friend into a story because it’s the only way I know how to love with this desperation of sincerity’ brain to leave in the narrative, methinks. I feel he’d appreciate it on a craft level, if nothing else.)
If you read through all of Rook’s potential backstories, one of the common threads through all of them, along with a certain maverick ‘I’ll do whatever it takes’ streak, is a sense of profound alienation. They did something or have some sort of quality that made it hard for them to fit in with the group they’re from, causing a conflict that cuts them off from parts of their identity as it’s been up until now. All of which also adds to how important Varric is to them — he was clearly able to break/see through some of that and be closer with them, even in the relatively short time they spent together. No matter what else goes to shit, they can trust that a) Varric sees them, b) he genuinely likes them and believes in them not despite who they are, but for it, and c) he’s got their back, we’re in this together kid. And then he is gone, and it takes them the whole game to be able to bring themselves to accept that and know themselves again, be able to let new relationships in fully. The very understandable ‘the last time I let someone in, they got stabbed before my eyes and the world ended’ flinch away, even if they’re not consciously aware that’s what it is. Anyway I love Rook. So much space to play around in here as to WHY they might feel or react like this, even when the framework is more defined.
#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#rook#solas#varric tethras#dragon age meta#some of the same stuff around how bellara feels like rare representation of the good AND the bad of being neurodivergent#and the ongoing nature of it -- there's no easy resolution or solution to this just ways to live with it both in joy and despair --#going on with rook being Like This. their bumbling awkwardness can be endearing and funny but it does also genuinely hinder them#(awkwardness can mean bluntness or insecurity or constant deflective quips or what have you it comes from the same source)#I personally like a slightly more set protagonist like this (as well as both Hawke and Ryder) -- it's more interesting to me#to have a specific person in a specific situation to build on than the more sandbox approach. but I think that's very much#just a personal preference thing I don't think there's a right or wrong thing here from either the creator's side or the player#just different things people respond to differently etc. I feel like rook's backstories are quite a good balance of set vs. open#to start to build a character within!#I do wish. perhaps. that there was more willingness in certain quarters to look at it with that kind of nuance and generosity#rather than having to read 'x is OBJECTIVELY a bad protagonist and everyone agrees!!' again and again. but you know.#at least I can focus on what brings ME joy (if people are determined to be wrong it's not within my power or responsibility#to change their minds jfskda)

state of deltarune theories is so so bad cuz they all try to connect back to the theme of escapism without noticing that that theme isn't even in deltarune.
#the personification of noelle's overbearing mother follows her around throughout the cyber world.#and she spends the entire game scared and confused and alone. until the very end where she's forced to stand up to that figure that scares#-so much. not because she went through any eye opening adventure where she learned to be more brave-#-but because her friends were literally about to die.#she didn't grow at her own pace. she was forced to speak up at the last moment.#kris gets a weird effigy of their brother forced on them as a romantic interest without their say in the matter-#-because they literally cannot speak their mind.#and gosh. the most defying example. berdly.#he spends the entire game trying to build an actual escapist fantasyland. with all his shtick about making a 'smartopia'.#but it never works out.#berdly keeps trying to live that escapist fantasy. a fantasy where he's the hero and gets the girl at the end (the girl being susie)#but he never gets that.#absolutely nothing in the game points at it being about escapism in any shape or form.#hell. I'd say dark worlds don't even reflect what the lightners want in any way.#kris doesn't get friends because of the dark worlds. but because of *us*.#we. the player. is the the one making the right choices for kris.#deltarune is much more interested in exploring what it means to be stuck in a narrative-#-that forces per assigned roles on characters that don't want those roles than it is ever about escapism.#like. did everyone miss the huge player shaped elephant in the room or what.#✏️

Something I really like is that April’s constant stream of odd jobs she goes through is somewhat reflected in the boys as well. Like, you have April working at random pizza places or getting a crane license or being fully willing to apply for a job at a place clearly made out of cardboard. Then you have the boys as well who do anything from working as a basketball mascot, building a massive dog park, being waiters, getting a whole band gig at a theme park, etc, etc-
Main difference is that April actively applies for these jobs (and is hopefully paid for the short time she’s in them) whereas for the bros the jobs usually find them (and they practically never get paid.) It doesn’t even stop at jobs either, they just seem to casually amass skills in general.
I don’t know, I like how both April and the turtles are just so ready and willing to do things. Sure, they’re not always good at these things, but they do them readily! In a way, being heroes is just another job (well, more like volunteer work/vigilantism/another fun activity) that they initially took on because of their general sense of “why not?”
They’re very willing and open to trying out new things despite their tendency to revert back to what they enjoy (and how commonly trying new things ends up going wrong), and I think that adaptational interest of theirs really helps them be well rounded in multiple regards.

not enough discussion about the gavins' complicated relationship with feminine-coded/beauty products, i don't think.

i dont really know how to phrase this but the elephant in the room is that if carlos loses the final he will go back down to no.3. personally, i dont think it achieves anything to want him to win specifically to keep zverev at no.3- there is functionally no difference between 2 and 3, and the issue with zverev isn’t that he’s high ranked, it’s that he faced near zero consequences for being a domestic abuser. There is no tangible retribution in him having “bad” results, and frankly I don’t think it serves anyone to let him dictate the results u want. Basically what im saying is root for carlos bc u like carlos and want him to be no.2, not bc u don’t want zverev to be no.2. And don’t not root for holger bc if he wins zverev will overtake carlos. Holding either of the performances responsible for Zverev’s place in the sport is unfair to them as individuals and largely pointless in addressing the actual issue of zverevs place in the sport.
And as a last note, no player has any moral duty to beat him- and this goes both ways. As in, no player has committed a moral failing in losing to him AND no player has committed a moral victory for beating him. The issues with Zverev are not within the context of the tennis court, they are in the context of the real women he abused, and the fact he is allowed to keep being a professional athlete at all- not whether he’s good at it. It would still be a systemic failing that he can continue playing without consequence if he never made it past challengers.

Yoshio Urasawa AMV MEP Sign-Ups!
I'm hosting a weirdly specific Detective Conan MEP (Multi-Editor Project)—one focused on the eleven episodes written by Yoshio Urasawa, set to YUNGBLUD's "weird!"
If you don't recognize the name Yoshio Urasawa, you might recognize another: Smile Village. Urasawa is a Conan screenwriter known for penning the wackiest, most outrageous scripts, like "Intrigue at Smile Village" (Episode 997) and "The Genius Restaurant" (Episode 1,089). This is a MEP to celebrate these oddities, with one part per Urasawa episode!
All oddities in question:
Episode 943: "Tokyo Barls Collection" (cabbage core)
Episode 955: "The Secret of the Insect Man" (bug outfits)
Episode 976: "Follow Them! Detective Taxi" (armadillo)
Episode 997: "Intrigue at Smile Village" (does it need explaining)
Episode 1,010: "The Idol Whose Smile Disappeared" (dine and dash)
Episode 1,028: "Ballad of the Woman Who Loved Cake" (drowning in red bean paste)
Episode 1,057: "Bad Guys" (they really want to throw Conan off a roof)
Episode 1,067: "The Shopping Center In Love" (wrestling)
Episode 1,089: "The Genius Restaurant" (candy is for babies)
Episode 1,119: "The Four-Person Class Reunion" (host clubs are serious business)

How It Works
Open to editors of all levels!
As stated, each part will focus on one of Urasawa's episodes. While bringing in other sources from the anime or manga is permitted, the majority of each part should be the one Urasawa episode.
No style guidelines or color scheme! The only guideline is to be weird!
Please render your part in 29.97 FPS. If using Sony Vegas, please disable resample.
There is no preference on file format.
If possible, leave at least 15 extra frames at the end of your part for transition purposes.
The final MEP will be posted to this Tumblr and my YouTube channel. There will be optional subtitles on the YouTube upload, but the Tumblr upload will be hardsubbed with stylized subs like this sign-up video (though they're subject to change). Subtitles will be positioned to not cover up any editor's typography.
Deadline is 23 March
Sign-ups will remain open until 23 February. Any unclaimed parts will then be claimed by me and/or anyone interested in editing more than one part.

Your Obsession AU is very deeply unsettling. I love it. Would the curse cause Alastor to suffer any problems during Overlord meetings? I know you have your main cast of threats, but I wonder how Alastor deals with multiple other Overlords alongside Rosie.

So I had to sit on this a bit as the trickiest thing about the obsession au for me is just how much chaos I think works in it. When I was asked about there being any sort of pause in the curse, I settled with pretty much no, but the intensity of it is not constantly amped to 11 for everyone. The au is meant to be very torturous and tiring for the man, but I certainly still want society in Hell to be functional on some level. Or else Hell would be strangely specifically catered to Alastor only, which isn't really the idea. BUT I do want him to constantly be on his toes, exhausted, and faced with a seemingly constant wave of love he has no desire to have. I like to think of it like, if you see from ONLY Alastor's perspective, he is constantly being sought after with no breaks and the world seemingly revolves only around him. However, if you look at it from a more omnipresent view, there's certainly a lot of love for Alastor but it's not like people aren't able to do their normal jobs or have other relationships, it's still pretty functional. I hope that makes sense? Again, I still want it to live up to the name of being the OBSESSION AU, but I do want other stuff to be allowed to happen (like say the plot of the show).
So to answer this question, I think Alastor would suffer some issues, but not in the sense that he will be jumped at any moment (though he certainly probably feels that way). Overlords like Carmilla and Zestial are pretty coy in their actions whereas someone like Zeezi would probably be more forthcoming with it. There would be fighting who got to sit next to him (which I'm sure Carmilla would always save a seat at the head of the table closest to her). Alastor would probably be pretty tense often while the meeting goes on, and unwanted touches by whoever he's sitting by would happen (some like Valentino would probably go below the belt with the touching and land him in the wall for his efforts). Wouldn't be surprised if a meeting always started with them asking how Alastor is, people always asking for his thoughts on a subject, and there's never an eye not on him even if the conversation has nothing to do with him. Carmilla has probably forced Alastor to sit by her due to the lightest of roughhousing/distraction just so he can be close to her (and also keep the meeting on track). And Alastor never appreciates the feeling of being a favorite toy placed on a high shelf and away from a misbehaving child. Alastor tries to avoid lingering as much as possible and tries to make sure he can't be tracked. The overlords either try to make conversation (or lead/invite him back to their place) or stalk Alastor on his way to his next destination. At worst, the overlords would fight each other for the right to get Alastor, especially if two overlords are trying to talk/invite him at the same time. There were probably outright fights within meetings too, whether as something as small as someone taking a seat next to Alastor or touching him in a way they didn't like. But for the most part, they're still functional (somewhat).
Zestial and Carmilla are a little hard to figure out cuz I feel like we really didn't get to know them a lot, I think the best I can say is that they'd be pretty subdued in their obsessions. Zestial would be very quiet, and perhaps Alastor would constantly feel something touching him, like a ghost of a hand or something, but never figure out who it was. He'd also probably try to keep Alastor in his home to never come out maybe? Carmilla, I can only think of putting him through a constant dance, exhausting him to the point of bruised feet, and often trying to come up with reasons to hold Alastor back post-meeting to get more time with him. Since she makes angelic weaponry, I can see her using that to her advantage by threatening others to back off or even threatening Alastor to stay for dinner or something. Seeing how she interacted with him in canon, she'd probably be pretty aloof with her affection. She's fine with a hand on the shoulder but probably keeps more affectionate behavior in private and even then it's probably still somewhat subtle. She'd probably be a bit of a tsundere for lack of a better word, similar to Vaggie but minus the actual hatred. Carmilla and Zestial probably work with one another from time to time, but may not be interested in a polyamorous relationship with Alastor like Charlie and Vaggie are. This could change seeing as it felt like they had some tension in the show, but it didn't seem like anything super overt.
The vees fight over who gets to go to the meetings rather than drawing straws for the loser to go to the meetings, just for the chance to be in the same room as Alastor (I can totally see in the overlord meeting ep, Vox and Valentino fighting about it and Velvette just saying she'd go not quite understanding why they were fighting to go. Then she sees Alastor and the rest is history). Oh but y'know what? I bet Velvette would be an internet stalker. Scrounging up all the info she can about Alastor, trying to secretly take pictures of him, it probably would startle Alastor to find a doll arm with a phone in hand in his room. And I think she'd try to make it seem like she doesn't care about Alastor to everyone else, but if she's alone with him she makes it known she likes him. Sort of think about that thing in shows where there's a popular thing that most of the cast likes but one of the characters is like "Pfft, I don't get the appeal. Seems lame." But then they're alone and they have a whole shrine to that thing. Something like that. And I can see that throwing Alastor a bit off for her to treat him like she does everyone else and give him a little bit of hope for some actual companionship, that is until they're alone or he does find an aforementioned arm in his room.
I do think Alastor would just like... not go to some. He really doesn't seem like the type who would even care to go to the meetings in the first place quite honestly, he always rang as a "doing his own thing" kinda guy. But, he does seem to see it as an important thing to go to in the series, so I'm sure while he does skip some meetings, he doesn't do it too often. (plus he probably fears a manhunt would happen if he didn't go to enough, which I'm sure happened with his 7-year absence.)
Trying to come up with new forms of obsessions unique to each character is both really fun and really hard to do. So I'm always open to ideas. Obviously, not everyone is gonna be super unique (like Angel and Rosie are pretty similar in what they do, albeit the methods are different), but I do wanna try and keep it fun to see how one character might differ from another while keeping IN CHARACTER as much as possible.

Seeing as the Gerudo turned on Ganon, he might not have been that much better of a ruler.
First of all, we literally have no idea, because the only ancient Gerudo that we actually get to interact with is Ganondorf himself, and he has nothing to say about his own people. The ancient Gerudo sage doesn't count btw, she doesn't have a name, we never even see her face, and she has literally nothing to say except repeating the exact same dialogue as the sages for the other races. The narrative does not treat the ancient sages as people; they are four completely interchangable weapons that are owned by the royal family.
And secondly, I don't care how Ganon ruled them; the Gerudo only get one man every century, if their king sucks, they've obviously got their own system of government to fall back on. I have no idea what kind of authority the sages had among their own people, but honestly I'd say if the four of them were in charge of their respective people, then they were just puppet rulers appointed by Rauru, given that all four of them happily agreed that to sell their entire race into servitude the second Zelda asked them. Say what you will about Ganondorf, but I fucking know that if he was told the Gerudo people existed for the sole purpose of serving the glory of Hyrule, he'd drop kick Zelda into the fucking sun.
And don't get me started on the implications of the cultural differences we see between the independent Gerudo and the annexed Gerudo. The background Gerudo characters all have their own models, and we can clearly see that the ones siding with Ganon have their own unique looks - for example, the amazing lady with the mohawk that summons the molduga swarm in that one flashback. And men are never mentioned in these flashbacks at all, which implies that the Gerudo genuinely didn't care about settling down. Ganon even speaks derisively about marriage, implying that it's very rare for Gerudo women to make serious romantic commitments with men. It implies that their culture is more along the same line as their portrayal in OOT - they are a closed culture. Men trying to force their way into their areas are arrested, and mocked for being entitled dumbasses. Outsiders are only welcome if they can prove that they respect the Gerudo as people, and aren't just there to try and pick up chicks. It's never outright said, but OOT also makes it pretty clear that the Gerudo women just aren't interested in marrying outsiders - close relationships occur with other Gerudo, Hylian men are only considered useful for making babies.
Meanwhile the Gerudo we see serving Hyrule are all trying to measure up to Hylian beauty standards, and appeal to their men. Their one goal in life is to meet a man and get married. Men are welcome in their lands, and only kept out of the town itself... and even then, there's a small army of guys trying to force their way into the town anyways, which is brushed off as just haha, boys will be boys. No men allowed isn't even about independence, it's just a silly romantic tradition.
Of course this is just a fictional culture in a game world, but it's still really fucking uncomfortable that the 'evil' Gerudo are the ones that have independence, both politically and socially, and display a unique culture that refuses to tolerate disrespect from outsiders. Meanwhile the 'good' Gerudo are the ones that canonically exist to serve a kingdom where 95% of the population is light skinned (even setting aside the unfortunate implications, just saying one race exists to serve a different one is super fucked up), they have classes on how to be more appealing to Hylian's, and their entire social structure is built around finding a Hylian man to marry, making them all inherently dependent on the goodwill of outsiders. Even their biggest value of 'women only' is treated as a joke; men trying to trespass in BOTW are just shoved back out the door, letting them keep trying all day if they want. The crowds of men plotting to force their way in are laughed off as a joke. Nobody cares that there's a guy running laps around their city walls and trying to trick women into being alone with him. I mean for fucks sake, in TOTK we find that the creepy guy trying to lure women away has taken advantage of a massive disaster to get into the town, and he's still there once things return to normal. You can't kick him out, or alert anyone to his presence. And the Gerudo just tolerate Hylians blatantly ignoring their boundaries. For fucks sake, TOTK even reveals that the seven legendary heroines they've been revering the whole time were actually completely useless and unable to achieve anything... because they needed the eighth hero, a Hylian man to teach them basic tactics and do all the heavy lifting.
TOTK does not respect the Gerudo people in the slightest. It doesn't respect anyone who isn't Hylian or Zonai.
...This got a little off track, but the point I'm trying to make is, no, I don't consider the Gerudo turning on Ganon to mean anything. The entire game does not feel like the real story of what happened, it feels like the propaganda version of history meant to make Hyrule look as good as possible. I genuinely cannot believe that we're being told the real story about the Imprisoning War, because none of it feels real, and we don't get to know any details that might have made Hyrule look even slightly imperfect. We're told that Ganondorf is evil because he hates Hyrule, and he hates Hyrule because he's evil. The Gerudo people followed Ganondorf and saw him as a hero of their people, then suddenly he was their worst enemy. Hyrule is a perfect kingdom that has strong, equal alliances with the other races, but also all of the non-Hylian races exist for the sole purpose of serving Hyrule, and their leaders are expected to swear eternal loyalty and submission to the Hylian royal family. King Rauru and Queen Sonia united all of the races in peace and equality, which is why they're sitting on the world's supply of magical nuclear missiles, and every member of the Hylian royal family is allowed to walk around wearing them as cute accessories, but everyone else only gets them at the last second, and they all need to outright swear to only use that power to benefit Rauru and his descendants.
There's just so many fucked up contradictions, and so many hints of something more nuanced going on... but the story refuses to acknowledge any of it, and just keeps aggressively pushing the narrative that Hyrule is the ultimate good and couldn't possibly do anything wrong. I don't even believe that Ganon was a bad king honestly; we never hear why his people stopped following him. We also never even see if the Gerudo people turned on him at all; all we know is the ancient Gerudo sage wanted him dead, and given that she also happily sold her people into slavery, she's not exactly the most trustworthy source of information. All we know is that Ganondorf was a hero to his people, only one of his citizens is ever shown having an issue with him (and her motives are never explained), and then he lost the war and was sealed away, leaving his people open to be conquered by Zelda and annexed into Hyrule. By the time we see any Gerudo actually opposing Ganon (apart from the ancient sage), it's been ten thousand years since the war, and all anyone knows is the Hylian version of the story.

also on that lance knows keith the best and canonically NEVER lies about him, which i know people will raise a brow at that claim but PLEASEE just watch the show youll see what i mean
whenever he discusses keith its never like outright lies, he usually bases his statements on what hes seen personally and observed from keith (which i could get into this actually for literal hours, lance is constantly observing that man), he knows keith like the back of his hand which is CRAZY (again i could get into this but i wont until im not sick maybe)
anyway point being lance is canonically a reliable source of information about keith and quite literally the *only* reliable narrator when it comes to keith, do not say shiro is,,, i jhave . words for that man. none of them are kind.
anyway this haunts me 24/7, he never outright tries to slander keith (liek the textbook lying definition ykwim??) (im sick so pls . have mercy), he literally just states objective facts about him and adds a lil frowny face (allura dinner scene specifically when his sister expresses interest you can hear him listing off that he has a mullet and likes knives,, way to go lance, very . convincing argument)
