Invader Comics has launched a Kickstarter to adapt Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls as part of its Gory Books line of children's book-style adaptations of horror properties.

The 28-page hardcover story is written by Onyx the Fortuitous creator Andrew Bowser and Joan Ford and illustrated by Kyle Hilton. Several pages and character designs can be previewed below.

Already over halfway to its $10,000 goal with 19 days to go, you can pre-order a digital copy of the book for $10 or secure a print edition with a metal bookmark for $30. Other tiers come with additional swag, including the film's soundtrack on vinyl or cassette.

Onyx the Fortuitous is struggling to find purpose with his soul-devouring side gig when he receives a coveted invitation to the mansion of his idol, Bartok the Great. He joins Bartok and his mysterious delegation to raise the spirit of an ancient demon for a once-in-a-lifetime ritual.

Full disclosure, I haven't seen Talisman of Souls yet, though it's been on my radar since it was announced!! I have no context for Barton's character but I did find these excellent images online that delighted me, and I've done a little draw over of one of them cause the pose is just too good. What a lad. Cannot wait to see the film!

PSA for Combs fans!

I’d be a bad horror diehard if I didn’t let all the Tumblr folks know that Jeffrey Combs is in a movie currently playing at Sundance, and there are CONSTANT re-animator references. Barbara Crampton makes a few brief cameo appearances as well - but if you’re a combs fan (like I am) that’s been starving for quality content, the movie is called Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, and Jeff is in it a TON. I don’t wanna spoil it but there are SO MANY re-ani references (the writer/director is clearly a diehard) and the practical effects are super fun. If you can stomach the cringe humor of Onyx himself, this is a great entry in the combs canon (and may or may not at one point feature Jeff in his underwear).

Since (pretty sure) no one can disprove this, and in quasi-celebration of Pride Month, I’m headcanoning that Onyx The Fortuitous, Slayer Of The Bright Realm is both Autistic & Asexual!

From the way he interacts with people and is extremely passionate about what he likes to a very thorough degree, I instantly related to him (being autistic myself).

Seriously, there were points in the movie where he was talking and making references to people that made sense to him, leaving everyone else kinda confused, and I was just sittin’ there like “oh my god…I do that” or “is this what it’s like when I try to interact with people?”

He’s socially awkward and straight forward, but if you get him going about his special interests or relate to him on some level, he’ll talk your ears off (something else I’m extremely familiar with).

Plus, his little vocal ticks seem very neurodivergent to me.

And I believe he might be asexual but just doesn’t realise it (also something I could relate to). Yes, he is shown to have private fantasies and gets upset over speculation regarding his virginity, but nowhere in the movie do we see him cozying up to anyone in any way that isn’t purely friendly. Also, for those unaware, some asexuals do experience forms of sexual desire and fantasies. Spectrums, baby.

And I’d say there tends to be a bit more pressure on men and a certain ridicule concerning their virginity, so he more than likely feels embarrassed for those reasons also. It may not necessarily be that he feels like he just can’t seem to quote-un-quote ‘lose it’ yet, but rather that he may not have any interest and doesn’t consciously think about it until someone else brings it up.

Even at the end when Farrah heavily implies a sexual union by him joining with her, he doesn’t immediately spring for the obvious answer. He guesses something more tame before she has to specify that there’d be sex involved. This could just be him getting shy or something, but I see it more as Onyx not feeling strongly about engaging in intimacy (particularly with someone that he probably doesn’t feel strongly towards). He’s kinda the same in the musical sequence, if I’m recalling correctly (where Farrah even goes as far(rah) as taking on the image of his personal fantasy to further coax him to her side - and it still doesn’t work).

Onyx The Fortuitous, Slayer Of The Bright Realm (as played by Andrew Bowser) from the movie Onyx The Fortuitous & The Talisman Of Souls (2023) is Autistic & Asexual. And he probably doesn’t even realise this.

Broke Horror Fan presents Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls' soundtrack on vinyl and cassette in conjunction with Witter Entertainment and Fortuitous Films.

The score is composed by Matt Mahaffey (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and includes Onyx's rendition of Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" plus guest appearances by Kwamé and Jason Threm.

Three vinyl variants are available: glow-in-the-dark with white splatter featuring art by Matt Ryan Tobin (limited to 250), glow-in-the-dark with black and green splatter featuring art by Tobin (limited to 250), and black featuring art by Phantom City Creative.

The cassette is available with green (limited to 250) and standard black shells. Both versions feature a six-panel insert with cover art by Lukas Ketner.

The records are housed in gatefold packaging and include a digital download. Autographed vinyl signed by writer-director-star Andrew Bowser and discounted bundles are also available. Pre-orders are expected to ship in January.
