You don’t remember Marnie?”

Asked Hisako.

“No… yes… but she is just a figment of my imagination.”

Anna looked at Hisako with confusion. Marnie was just an imaginary friend and nothing more. She thought about the time spent with Marnie, it all seemed so distant. Anna narrowed her eyes, Marnie was slipping away from her mind and her face was being fogged by distant memories.

“I’m so confused!”

Sayaka cried out and tilted her head, everything seemed so complicated. Anna shrugged her shoulders.

“Marnie was your sister, Anna. Your older sister.”

Hisako said gently,

“Your older sister by three years, remember?”

Memories of a little blonde girl flooded into her mind. The blonde was spinning in circles and a smile formed on her rosy cheeks. A bubbly, joyous laugh filled the room and it was ever so contagious that Anna couldn’t stop smiling.

“You two were so close that it was impossible to separate you apart. Marnie would bring you everywhere and you would follow like a little duckling.”

Anna snapped back to reality. She shook her head, “No,” she thought, “There's no way, just no way,”

Hisako seemed to have read Anna’s thoughts and explained,

“Before you became a foster child, you had a family. Your father…your father had blonde hair and your mother had brown hair, that's why your hair is brown and Marnie’s blonde.”

“But… but… no… my parents are dead and I don't have a sister!”

Anna cried out, her voice shaking with frustration as tears began to fall… Sayaka patted Anna’s shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. She had no idea what’s going on.

“There was a big fire in your house when you were three…”

Hisako explained further, as images flashed through Anna’s mind. Everywhere was blurry with smoke as a fire leaped into life and lightened the dark room. A young Anna rubbed her eyes as she waddled into the living room.

“Mama? Papa?”

She whispered. It was midnight, and the chaos woke her up. The room was empty with flames. Photographs had shattered into pieces, furniture melted and all her treasures destroyed.

“Anna!”

Anna looked back and saw her sister running towards her,

“Run!”

Anna stood there, confused as ever. The flame hushed the voice of her sister. All she could see was her sister mouthing words and pointing to the door. Smoke filled Anna’s lungs and she could hardly breathe. Her sister ran through the fire and carried Anna out the door, while she succumbed to the fire at last

Suddenly,  it was silence. So quiet that it was deafening. Anna, now full of dust, stared as the fire consumed all life that had crossed its path, her house cackling as it crashed onto the ground.

“Anna? Anna?”

Sayaka waved to Anna. Faced with the forgotten memories of her past, Anna broke down into tears. How could she have forgotten her family and the heroic act of her sister eight years ago?

“Marnie…”Anna sobbed, “My dearest sister, Marnie…”

“She has always been with you, and will always be with you, darling, deep down your heart. Whenever you are sad, whenever you feel scared, listen. Listen closely to your heartbeat and you will hear a voice. You will hear your sister comforting you. So don’t ever be scared, as she'll always be there for you.”

Hisako smiled slightly as she lifted Anna up.

“It’s normal to forget about the past, especially if it was traumatic. It’s not your fault to have forgotten Marnie.”

“Yeah! It’s not your fault at all!”

Sayaka exclaimed. This time, she finally understood what had happened. Anna held Sayaka’s hand and they walked towards the cliff. Anna breathed in the fresh air, knowing that she will never be alone, ever again.

Only Yesterday

What a brilliant, beautiful movie. I am already a massive fan of Studio Ghibli so I knew I was going to like it, but I was unprepared for how emotional and nostalgic it would make me feel. To me, the best kinds of movies are the ones that leave you with this knot of feelings that you then untangle and examine to really understand how it made you feel. I find myself still untangling that knot.

What I Liked:

I’m finding it hard to point to my usual specific things that stuck out to me. Taeko is a young woman who is neither happy nor unhappy with her life. She just is. On a trip to the countryside she begins thinking back to who she was as a fifth grader. The events of that year were neither life shattering nor particularly remarkable, and yet, every single memory shaped who she became. Things seem unfair, and opportunities were missed, and moments happen that you wish you could undo or don’t fully understand until you look back at them later in life. We are all shaped by little moments and the choices we make. We are constantly learning and growing and self evaluating who we are. Sometimes we succeed and sometimes we fail and every time we learn a little bit more about ourselves. I love Taeko’s kindness and her willingness to listen to and evaluate things from another’s perspective. The love story in the movie is fine, but it’s the journey of self and the reflection of that journey that really touched me.

What I Disliked:

I realize this would have made it a super long movie, but I find myself wondering what happened to all the kids from fifth grade. Did she stay friends with same girls or did they grow apart as so many of us do? Did the kid who was her first crush continue with baseball or did he grow out of it? Did he ever find himself a girl who also likes clouds? I definitely don’t remember in my childhood periods being the taboo topic that it was in this school, or the boys obsession with talking about it. I hope she stayed friends with the girl that developed early, she seemed like a good one to keep around.

Thoughts and Ponderings:

It truly astounds me that the same person who wrote this nostalgic uplifting think piece is also the person who wrote Grave of the Fireflies, which is the single most depressing movie I’ve ever watch in my entire life.

I have conflicting feelings about her parents. I can’t decide if this is a product of the era, or culture, or my lack of being an actual parent.

If this movie was made today do you think Toshio would have been on Farmers Only? The title could be a Wheel of Fortune Before and After puzzle: Farmers Only Yesterday

I adored every minute of this movie and I’ll be untangling my knot of feelings on it all night.
