The Interactions of Marx & Magolor

Some think I'm out of my mind thinking Magolor's castle (or “Magolor Land”) bears a resemblance to Marx, and even more crazy to think it will lead to an appearance by him in the remake. 

...And maybe they’re right!

But I would just like to see these two who have been hinted at knowing each other for nearly TWELVE YEARS to finally interact on screen together. Canonically. (Not counting Star Allies. Great as it is.)

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look back at all the times Marx and Magolor have canonically (or canon-adjacent) been hinted at knowing each other or otherwise been seen together!

1) Magolor’s “somebody” in the "Return to Dream Land" script

"By the way, I knew about you long before our fateful meeting."

"Kirby, the happy-go-lucky hero with the bottomless stomach."

...I’m kind of sorry we lost out on hearing Magolor slyly call Marx an idiot behind his back in English! Maybe they’ll add it back in DX?

2) Marx shows up in RtDL’s Kirby Master cutscene

The rest of the audience is made up of duplicates of characters already in the game. Only Marx was included without having any other visual appearance in RtDL. Aka, he’s a new resource - for a half-second back shot in a 5 second movie. Now, he had a 3D model for the Super Star Ultra cutscenes, but that was years ago, and this still would have required porting him over.

There must be a meaning to all that effort...

3) They have a rare gold Rock transformation in Kirby Triple Deluxe

The game immediately after we learn they may have known each other, they appear together on a statue? Once again, this requires either making a new model for Marx, or carrying over his SSU model.

This rock transformation is used AGAIN in Planet Robobot, seemingly emphasizing that the two of them are linked in SOME way. The only difference is that the two of them have been downgraded to common granite...

I guess the gold foil wore off? Tee hee...

4) Marx appears again in TDX's Kirby Master scene. Only this time, he’s sitting next to Magolor! (And Galacta Knight, curiously enough.)

While getting the “somebody” line requires playing RtDL extensively, it really does seem that HAL were more open to the idea to revealing that the two had some connection by this point, thus, letting them sit together.

4) Magolor slips up, in talking about Kirby in a way he only could have known from talking to Marx in the text of “The Starcutter and the Lying Wizard” (an official novel adapting RtDL’s plot.)

 The novel adaptation drops the “I know someone who knows you” scene, but it includes at least one line from Magolor hinting at the same idea...

Now, the English text above is from my translation of the novel, but you can read my explanation of said translation and why I think it still supports Marx being the one here - if you’re concerned I’m biased. (I won’t deny the possibility exists, but it doesn’t completely invalidate the idea either.)

5) Official makers of Kirby Merch, Ensky, has the two of them talking!

Back in 2017, Kirby_Ensky ran a popularity contest, the goal of which was to decide which characters should get more merch. (Waddle Dee won, btw.) 

Now, each candidate got a little shoutout tweet of their own. And Magolor's made special mention of Marx! (No other characters got this kind of call out btw.) The highlighted text says: 

"He was seen talking with Marx in the waiting room. Are they up to some trouble again...?"

The use of “again” suggests they have a history of working together.

6) The official Kirby twitter portrayed them together multiple times!

Often, they’re planning mischief. In fact, three of the pictures create a little mini-story (stretching across several years!) where Marx and Magolor plot to play a trick on Kirby by telling the puff that circling those mysterious objects you see all over Popstar 25 times will turn them into chocolate. 

They grin, seeing Kirby fell for it completely, with the puff eventually exhausting themselves (and all of Channel Dream Land) out with all that walking.

 However, when the duo try again, this time telling everyone that the star blocks you see everywhere are actually made of cake, they're caught in the act and forced to make a huge pile of star block cakes for their lie.

7) Re-ment’s Kirby-themed Hanafuda cards. 

Each card has a Kirby character or reference to something in Kirby on it. Marx and Magolor each have their own card and are part of the same "suit." What this means is they can be grouped together to create a match.

Not every familiar pairing is grouped together via suit like this, but it’s certainly interesting that they were. Especially as their art appears to almost fit together.

8) Re-Ment’s "Garden of the Stars: Afternoon Tea" 

Re-ment is better known for their figures, and they released a sweet set that has Kirby in a little hat and Waddle Dee with a frilly headband enjoying tea and sweets in the garden of the stars! It even comes with a signboard that has Kirby and Waddle Dee welcoming guests to the party. 

HOWEVER, the sign board actually has a secret reverse side which Re-ment later revealed on Twitter, featuring Marx and Magolor instead! It almost seems to suggest the two have teamed up once more and are planning some kind of prank to disrupt Kirby and Waddle Dee’s peaceful tea party!

9) The 30th Anniversary Music Fest

For the 30th Anniversary Music Fest, Marx and Magolor are paired together in both the merch (sharing a keychain design) AND the initial promo video. The promo video is interesting, because the only other characters to be introduced “in a set” like they are is the otherwise indistinct Waddle Dee trio. 

They also play similar instruments: guitar and bass.

10) The Marx costume and Magolor costume interact in a humorous way in this Super Kirby Clash video!

This particular video was posted on the official Twitter to advertise Marx’s equipment, a late game unlock. In the end of the clip, "Marx" is seen playing a trick on "Magolor," causing him to get squashed flat by the Blocky.

Here’s my translation of Magolor’s commentary on said tweet!

"If you could wish on the milky way, what would you wish for? I'd wish for galactic conque....err, I mean, for my shoppe to thrive! 

This equipment comes from a guy who tried to make a certain planet his own. It's incredibly powerful, but it'll make you want to play tricks on people! Hey, stop giving your friend trouble!"

...Similar to calling Marx an idiot early, he uses a rather dismissive form of address to refer to him here. He’s probably still upset about being smooshed. (Interesting too that said “friend” could very well be Magolor speaking on behalf of the Magolor-costumed Kirby. Aka, treating them as “friends.”)

11) Magolor's "Marx" outfit is "lovingly dedicated" to Marx.

Okay, okay. This sudden seeming evidence of a deeper relationship between Marx and Magolor coming out of nowhere in Super Kirby Clash isn’t exactly what it says in the original. (Gotta say, for whatever reason the original line turned out this way, I unabashedly love this version of it!) 

Though I'd like to take this time to point out that there IS an interesting theory with decent evidence (in JP) that Shopkeeper Magolor in Super Kirby Clash is apparently Magolor from the main dimension, transported to the Dream Kingdom by some strange means...!

EDIT: Theory was apparently confirmed true in an issue of Nintendo Dream.

He's the only character to refer to Clash's Kirby as "Kirby of the Stars" - OUR Kirby’s nickname - and he makes a reference to his original villain speech, a reference no one but him could possibly get in this alternate fantasy world. (As you can see in the above tweet, Shopkeeper Magolor teasily mentions his ultimate goal in RtDL something that doesn’t mesh with his friendly, unassuming “shopkeeper” role in SKC.)

 Meanwhile, Marx doesn't make an appearance anywhere in Dream Kingdom, meaning the costume and the jester's exploits the costume speaks of may be Magolor bringing information about Marx from the main timeline into the Dream Kingdom-verse. 

So... Magolor knows Marx’s story AND what he wished for.

12) This official clip promoting Dream Buffet shows them interacting

Yet again, the two appear together in an official promo video. I heard it suggested this one could be "revenge" for the Super Kirby Clash clip, as it’s “Magolor’s” turn to interrupt “Marx” feasting on strawberries. This seems to imply that when they can't find other characters to troll, the two troll each other!

13) Lastly, the towers of Castle Magolor/MagoLand resemble Marx’s Wings

I initially thought that more of the castle’s design could be a reference to Marx, such as the shapes on the tower body resembling those on his hat, but as higher res pictures of the boxart have come out, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. (There is a blue and red spot near the entrance that has a sun symbol on it. No telling if there’s another tower with a moon symbol...)

But we can see the colorful tiles much more clearly, and they and the flags do bear the same rainbow pattern as Marx’s wings are shown to have in his official art, a pattern that Magolor otherwise has no relation to.

Will this coincidence lead to anything? ...I guess we’ll find out!

Phew! I do believe that's most all of it! You could also compare their attacks, which have some similarities, although that doesn’t say anything about them having met. Now, I may have missed some interactions elsewhere though, because as you can see, there are a few really obscure places where they show up as pair. 

(And there some that are so tenuous I didn’t think they counted, like the two of them having their Poyo Poyo Cushions announced together, or both being on the “villain” side in the Kirby werewolf board game. There’s also some of the Star Allies celebration pictures and other group pics that have both of them, sometimes even in proximity to each other, but I left those out since the concept of the Dream Friends blurs the line of who knows who somewhat.

Only mildly related, there’s also this clip from a Nico Video stream about Kirby Clash that says nothing at all official about the two of them, but is completely hilarious as two men on the right come to the awkward realization that Marx and Magolor’s plushies have fallen down in a very “suggestive” manner and how are they going to adjust them without drawing more attention to it.)

...And there you go! They’re hardly inseparable (as the above video shows, they’re VERY separable! XD )  but seeing them hanging out causing trouble together is a strangely common sight. Whether or not they knew each other in the past, it’s safe to say they “know” each other now.

Here’s hoping that these two villains with a history stretching back for over a decade will someday enact their lovable mischief together on the same screen!!

There's only like 3 fics with them and I'm starving. They have the same situation where they lost a loved one that barely resembled the person they used to be by the time of their death, a corruption caused by something beyond their control, but also were involved in it. They both share grief and guilt, and could work on it together, Susie being more stoic and Taranza being way too open with his emotions, they balance eachother out. Also, girlboss x wet paper husband, enough said

🎮- What Kirby game or what point in the series timeline would your OC first appear?

Though Peony is a Floralian/Triple Deluxe sort of OC, she shows up quite a few years after TDX’s end, nearly four years later in fact so likely after Planet Robobot and Star Allies too (at least to me mentally and in my writing lol). She doesn’t “appear” in any games in my writing and doesn’t influence the stories within, however aspects of some of their stories have an impact on her, and not just TDX, as will become clear in my writing. She isn’t involved in any of the canon Kirby games’ stories, but echoes of their events will have an impact on her.

⭐️-If your OC got their own spinoff game what would it be about and what would the gameplay be like?

I think it would mainly be about her journey as a person that I intend on writing further as far as story goes so SPOILER but she does end up going to the Mirror Dimension and traversing it in order to learn more about herself and where she comes from and why she’s been alone all her life before meeting Taranza. It would be a platformer but I’m undecided on which kind, I could see something like the original Spyro trilogy working well with her character or even something more vast with adventure elements like Okami. She would also be a good contender for a gardening sim/lifestyle sim cozy game though I’m ngl, it would be fun to help her plant and grow stuff lol and decorate Castle Floralia’s gardens and stuff.

Most important to Peony are quality time and physical touch. ESPECIALLY physical touch, and not just in a romantic way or with Taranza who she is courting, but with friends too. Peony is extremely touch-starved, she’s lived alone, only with plants for all her life before meeting Taranza and journeying to the kingdom. She doesn’t even realize how touch-starved she is, but she is very deeply so. Plants cannot hug you, or hold your hand, or embrace you when you need a cry. Her plant family love her dearly it’s true, but the older she gets she realizes how massive the communication and socialization differences are between herself and her plants. That close, physical connection with others is more important than she could ever know, and she realizes that very fast. And hugs and kisses and stuff are things she really loves to give and receive on a fun, not as sad note. She loves to give Ranzie a little kiss and squimsh him all close, she’s extremely affectionate. Here they are right here. She loves it.

Tbh not to diss Planet Robobot again but thinking about it, it lowkey has the least interesting plot in the modern era. There's PRETTY much no meat on it's bones going on except for Susie's backstory.

In RtDL there is obviously Magolor and Lor Starcutter, very fascinating things that continue to be relevant in the series.

In TDX we discover entirely new country in the sky and the whole deal with the Dreamstalk is interesting to analyze. Plus, the usage of the cast is excellent.

In SA plot is a mess but Void Termina alone sparks a lot of discussion to this day, for better or worse.

In Forgotten Land we once again have entirely new setting with fleshed out world buildjng, events in the post game that actually matter, everything related to Fecto Elfilis and Dedede. Hell, even Meta Knight gets pretty fleshed out subplot.

Robobot not only can't use any character well that is not Susie, doesn't really utilize it's "invaded planet" premise well at all. Which is unfortunate, because based on concept alone, it had potential to be THE best Kirby story.

i always thought the idea of consensual possession by dark matter would be really cool and it seems fitting for sddd. him having a cooperative and sometimes dominant relationship over the dark matter drones left over after K64 as a contrast to dedede's fear of them + his relationship with waddle dees

One kind of Compute Engine virtual machine is a confidential virtual machine (VM). To help guarantee that your data and applications cannot be read or altered while in use, they employ hardware-based memory encryption.

AMD SEV

AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV) on Confidential VM provides boot-time attestation using Google’s vTPM and hardware-based memory encryption via the AMD Secure Processor.

AMD SEV provides excellent performance for computationally intensive activities. Depending on the workload, the performance difference between a normal Compute Engine VM and a SEV Confidential VM can be negligible or nonexistent.

AMD SEV systems using the N2D machine type offer live migration, in contrast to other Confidential Computing technologies using Confidential VM.

AMD SEV-SNP

Adding hardware-based security to assist thwart malicious hypervisor-based attacks like data replay and memory remapping, AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization-Secure Nested Paging (SEV-SNP) builds on SEV. Direct attestation results from the AMD Secure Processor are available upon request at any time.

TDX Intel

AMD SEV Confidential VM is now supported by Google Cloud attestation

If your trust model permits it, you can use the Google Cloud attestation service in place of creating and executing an attestation verifier yourself. Use the Go-TPM tools to obtain an attestation quote from the vTPM of an AMD SEV Confidential VM instance, then transmit it to the Google Cloud Attestation service using the./go-tpm token command for verification.

You can verify whether or not the virtual machine (VM) can be trusted by comparing its details with your own policy once the Google Cloud Attestation has verified the attestation quote. Only AMD SEV is currently supported by Google’s attestation service.

Confidential VM costs

In addition to the Compute Engine price, there are additional expenses for Confidential VM. The cost of a Confidential VM instance is determined by several factors, including the type of Confidential Computing technology (such as AMD SEV, Intel TDX, or AMD SEV-SNP) and whether the instance is preemptible or on demand. The fees are flat rate per vCPU and per GB for Confidential VM.

Ok, when Magolor and Taranza became boyfriends they lived at the Royal Road in the sky with Taranza, how did they get up there? With the Lor of course!

They were a softy, kind of, but Magolor had a kind personality that is so cute. He doesn't lie anymore, he only does it when It's an emergency, rush, etc.

When Magolor kept looking at the mirrior, he was just

He was blank and still, with wide open eyes blankly looking into the golden mirrior talking to a certain someone, Dark Taranza.

Uh anyways-

He's very chill when he's a King, except one little thing that's out of touch, he get's mad, REALLY upset.

He loves to cuddle with Taranza! Even if he's a real mean King he would still hug him! Huh now I wanna draw that...

When he was a flower, he couldn't talk very well because an eye was in his mouth, even if he screamed, it would just be muffling.

After the traumatic events of TDX, he changed not looking at a golden winged mirrior ever again.

Taranza gave him another flower to wear since it got destroyed when Kirby beated Mags. After all that he still moves on with his life with Taranza.

Poor Magolor, he went through RTDL, the epilogue, and TDX. Bros went through WORSE.

PS. Kirby didn't know that they were together after he defeated Magolor, but now he treats the both of them with respect after knowing their stories and problems.

And trusts Magolor again (in a good way! Magolor isn't a bad person)

List of Dark Matter headcanons I currently have because why not?

The Species itself

Eusocial (like bees), all Dark Matter serve a "queen"/Zero.

Lesser Matters have three different forms. A "Blob" form (used for resting), a "True" form (The "Sunflower form"), and a "Blade" ("Humanoid" form). The latter is only gained when a Dark Matter reaches a certain age though.

However, Zeroes only have one form.

Most Dark Matter don't have names. They can receive a name from anyone, but they can't name themselves (it's considered taboo)

Zeroes are a special case, they receive a name upon birth and pass it down to the first Matter they create.

Typically sleep in groups, most nests contain 5-10 Matters on average.

They can mutate if it'll help accomplish tasks, though the ones in Zero's colony try to avoid this if they can help it.

Also, Dark Matter only mutate at least once or twice in their lives (changing color doesn't count)

Speaking of which, most Dark Matter will gain color if they're away from their Zero for long enough. There's no way to reverse this.

Most "absorb" their food to eat it, though they don't have to.

Instead, they gain their energy through sleeping..

All Matters have acidic blood, a Zero's blood is more corrosive while other Matters have blood that's as acidic as orange juice.

Like Puffballs, Zeroes have fuzz on their bodies. However, lesser Dark Matter generally have rubbery skin.

Gooey

Physically about 6, doesn't know his actual age.

Received his name from Nago.

Always had two eyes since birth, nobody's sure why.

Always disconnected from the Hivemind.

One of the few lucky Dark Matter to have the Copy Ability, though it's at the cost of being able to possess others.

Slowly learning other abilities Dark Matter have however (Dark Laser being an example)

Big eater. He doesn't need to eat, but rather he eats because he enjoys it. Plus, food is a big deal in Dream Land.

Spars with Kirby and (eventually) Meta Knight post-DL3.

Not as dumb as most people think, though he struggles when it comes to remembering something.

He and Blade were inseparable back on Dark Star, they become close again some time after TDX happens.

Lives with Kirby, he usually watches over the house while he's gone.

Has a faint scar on his belly from getting hit with Zero's eye.

Used to be mute at one point, he'll still make gestures as a remnant of that.

Additionally, he glares when he strongly disagrees with something.

Blade/Swordsman

Physically about 16, doesn't know his actual age either.

Generally very quiet, though he's prone to outbursts.

Also always disconnected from the Hivemind, hence why he and Gooey became close.

More comfortable in "Blade" form, which is how he got his name (received from Taranza)

Meta Knight gave him the nickname "Swordsman" since he already knows a "Blade" (Blade Knight)

Picky eater. Although he CAN and DOES eat sometimes, he doesn't do it often.

Serves Dedede as a way to atone for his crimes, he views Dedede as another "Zero".

Hates yelling/loud noises. Also hates mushrooms more than life itself.

Gets along well with Taranza.

Crafter

Was once a promising soldier before he disconnected from the hivemind and took off.

Because of this, the rest of the hivemind assumed he died.

Physically about 28 years old.

Actually named himself, Nebula chews him out for this as soon as they reunite

More comfortable in Blade form like Blade himself, but he prefers to use magic and possession rather than using any sort of weapon.

Obsessed with color. Though he never gained any color himself, he's learned a few spells which allows him to steal color and apply it to other things...including himself.

Skin is dry and clay-like, someone give this guy some lotion!

Claycia gave him a second chance and the two seem to be on friendly terms. Things are still tense between him and Elline, but they get along OK for the most part.

Nebula

Physically 14, despite being chronologically older than Crafter and Blade

He's actually a Juvinille Zero. He should've matured by now, but the box set him back by about 15-16 hundred years.

Attempted to destroy Popstar so he could build his own version of "Dark Star", got sealed in a box because of this.

On a positive note, this earned him the nickname "Ruler of the Underworld" long ago.

Developed claustrophobia because of this.

Instead of destroying Popstar, be plans on finding a place to build his own colony when he finally matures...preferably somewhere dark yet warm.

Helped raise Crafter at one point. He also used to watch over Blade, though Blade doesn't remember him.

Talks highly of himself as a coping mechanism.

Things are neutral between him and The Squeaks as long as he doesn't try to possess Daroach again, though he's developed a soft spot for the Squeakers.
