Taurus Secures FINMA Approval for Retail Access to Tokenised Securities
In a significant development, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has granted approval to Taurus, a leading digital asset infrastructure provider, to broaden the access of its TDX trading platform to retail investors. This groundbreaking move enables retail users to participate in the trading of tokenized securities and digital assets on the TDX marketplace. Taurus, backed by Deutsche Bank, is on a mission to democratize the acquisition of private securities.
Yann Isola, Head of Product at TDX, emphasized the vision of "Private markets 2.0," aiming to digitize the process of acquiring private securities and make it as accessible as online book purchases. This strategic move aligns with the anticipated growth in the sector of tokenization, which is expected to witness substantial expansion in 2024.
The recent approval by FINMA, renowned for its rigorous regulatory standards, marks a significant milestone in the broader acceptance of digital assets within regulatory frameworks. This approval comes at a time when institutional interest in digital asset ventures is on the rise, exemplified by the recent approval of Bitcoin spot ETFs in the United States.
Leo Mizuhara, CEO of Hashnote, lauded FINMA's thorough and forward-thinking approach toward digital assets. However, he suggested that for retail users, the distinction between traditional securities and their tokenized counterparts might not be substantial.
Taurus's TDX marketplace already supports transactions in cryptocurrencies, Swiss Franc, Euro, and U.S. Dollar. Noteworthy Swiss companies like Investis and Teylor have already joined the platform to issue shares. The extension of TDX to retail investors is a pivotal step in expanding the participant base in primary and secondary markets for digital assets in Switzerland.
Lamine Brahimi, Co-founder of Taurus, expressed that the FINMA approval completes Taurus's marketplace by including retail investors alongside professional ones. TDX's target audience currently includes Swiss residents, with potential expansion to additional investors contingent upon compliance with trading and issuer regulations.
The collaboration between Deutsche Bank and Taurus is evident through the bank's investment in Taurus's Series B funding, highlighting the banking sector's growing interest in digital asset services. With retail clients now engaging in tokenized securities trading following FINMA's approval, it signifies a transformative shift in the digital securities landscape.
