I've seen a lot of people play Only Up!, but Cellbit's reaction to the unavoidable fall is still one of the saddest (funniest) moments ever.

Streamer game genre
I am interested in the topic of game development, and in particular how to come up with and make a game that will be interesting and popular. I won't say that I did some research for a long time, during which I had an epiphany. It's actually a completely random thought that I wanted to deploy. The thought is that there is a genre of games called Streamer games.
I'll try to define what I mean by this genre. These are social and/or deep games where a mistake is costly, and the game conditions generate situations that make it hard to contain emotions. Behind the very simple basic gameplay lies a great depth and complexity, the limit of which is beyond human ability.
The representatives of the genre that many people are already familiar with: Among Us, Only Up!, Getting over it, Jump King, Chained Together.
Among Us
Tumblr media
I think there are no people who have not heard of this social detective game. It gained its popularity 2 years after its release thanks to streaming on Twitch. The game's fun shell, seemingly simple gameplay creates a low entrance threshold and understanding of the game. The main social component, through which the funniest situations are generated, provides a great opportunity for collaborations between streamers and bloggers. There is a place for everyone: streamers who want to attract new audiences at the expense of entertainment; viewers who want to see nerves run high and further emotional release; players who just want to have fun with friends; players who want deep gameplay that involves a battle of the minds.
Only Up!, Getting over it, Jump King
Tumblr media
I'll put these games in one paragraph, because they share the same basic idea. You start at the bottom, go up to the top. The route and mechanics are quite complicated, it's easy to make a mistake, and you fall. These games are single player, the emphasis is on increasing difficulty and the increasing skill and precision each action requires. From an emotional standpoint, every move action (a jump, a leap) is accompanied by a peak of tension, and these actions occur so often that streamer and player feel constant tension and pressure. The moment of a mistake and further fall is accompanied by a release of tension and some extreme emotions (frustration, anger, hysteria). The longer the streamer plays and the lower the fall, the stronger these emotions are. The emotional component and imaginary simplicity of gameplay make other streamers and players try their hand at such games.
Chained Together
Tumblr media
This is honestly not an advertisement, the idea for the article came before the game was released. A new game that combines the 2 concepts described above. A game where a party of up to 4 players chained together must climb up. As a result, a social component is added to a game like Only Up! and it creates a big difference. In single player skill-based games, you can blame yourself or the game for a mistake. In social games, you can blame it on your teammates.
In this way, the game combines a complete definition of the Streamer game genre at once. A social game with ostensibly simple complexity, where a mistake is costly, and the game conditions generate such situations that it's hard to contain emotions. As a result, we get a satisfied audience of streamers who entertain the audience; a satisfied audience of viewers who like to watch a few of their favorite streamers play together; a satisfied audience of players who just want to have fun with their friends; a satisfied audience of players who like deep skill-based gameplay, but who are bored playing alone because other people bring the unpredictability factor, which makes the game more difficult.
OK, thanks, so what does that give?
From a business perspective, it gives insight into what kind of game you can build. If you want to make a game that has a high chance of becoming viral through streams and videos, you need to come up with a game based on the definition of the genre. If you are already making such a game because you enjoy this kind of gameplay yourself, you now know your main marketing channel and what is more likely to bring your game popularity.
