i'm so sad nerd culture has been corporatized because it's so accessible that it's been cheapened.
i don't mean this in a gatekeepy way; if i wanted a poster of fanart of, say, welcome to nightvale, i'd have to order it from the artist or buy it at a con or draw the damn thing myself.
now, fanart is still being made but i can log onto any of the various chinese sites (including amazon) and get a poorly manufactured print of someone's art without ever having the artist themself involved or paid. and i'll have a low quality wall hanging. and because it's so accessible, i can do this 50 times. cover a wall in it. overpay for something i could make on my home printer, get none of the satisfaction or human experience, but cultivate the aesthetic of that particular wall.
and it's completely loveless
there's no joy to the discovery of cheap crap on amazon that will fit the ~vibe~ i'm going for. there's no passion when i order a stack of ten arts that go together because they scream "nerdy" and use catchphrases that were played out in 2010.
i go to events and see people reselling stickers they got off wish for a dollar apiece, when the 50 pack was a dollar.
it's all so soulless
so when i say nerd culture sucks now, i don't mean "aaaa too many people i don't like have discovered that cool stuff is actually cool" like people love to pretend is the problem (though we can discuss the neurotypical invasion and subsequent ousting of autistics from traditionally social-reject circles later) the problem is that capitalism has sucked the joy out of it. 42 isn't an in-joke, it's a brand slogan at this point. everything is "wibbly wobbly" now. merchandise featuring d20s is some of the most popular cheap shitgifts you can get for holidays. everyone has seen how dragons consider you good with ketchup.
it's exhausting. none of the cheap crap is special. the market is oversaturated.
and now when i say i like xyz show, even though i liked it for 20 years, people do the whole "name three of their songs" type shit because they expect fandom to be so commodified that we have to be experts on every nuance if we've enjoyed something (or even loved it passionately) for so long. i haven't seen much doctor who past matt smith, but i've seen a shitload of baker and davison. being weird at me because i don't have an opinion on clara when i've only seen her twice is just obnoxious. because now, everyone's experience with a show or fandom is supposed to have some kinda alignment. when i was coming up, some of us had seen episodes others hadn't because they were still missing, or had to be torrented, or we went out of our way to find them, so every fan had a personal and unique relationship with the franchise. that just makes you out of touch now. if you haven't got all the info the youtube digests feed viewers, or the tiktok trends spread, you're a poser. if you don't like 5th ed d&d, you're boring and old. if you enjoy THAC0 you're a weirdo; but in a few years when the hipster zoomers discover it you can bet that my inability to calculate it myself will mean that i'm the poser.
i want the experience of having to order my specialty weeb shit from japan. i miss finding the vhs tapes of episodes of shows that didn't air anymore. yeah, that shit was more expensive back then, but it also meant that there was less drive to consume for all of it. each individual item i found was a special treasure, and that's just not the case anymore.

Scary Season
I have long said that Amazon is one of the most powerful, and popular, search engines. It is my go-to whenever I need to do product research, regardless of whether I have imminent purchase intentions. I figure if Amazon doesn’t have it, then it probably doesn’t exist.
Turns out I was right, because Search Engine Journal ranks Amazon as the third most popular search engine (behind Google and YouTube). I wasn’t making this stuff up after all.
Now comes more proof in the pudding of online shopping: Consumers look to Amazon first when shopping for Halloween goods. Some 44% of shoppers start there. As you have probably now surmised, if someone finds something they like while perusing their selection, you are already in the store so…you may as well buy it.

But wait, there’s more. Retailers have started pushing holiday sales earlier and earlier in recent years, and consumers responded favorably, with Halloween shopping (or pre-shopping) peaking in August. That’s long before these crisp mornings started.
If you also guessed that there is an inverse relationship between age or generational cohort, and proclivity to shop online, you would also be right. GenZers and Millennials are the most likely to shop Halloween online first before stepping foot in a BAM store. And that is IF they ever step foot in a BAM store.
This does not bode well for pop-up shops like Spirit Halloween. Every year these stores open for short-term gigs, typically in recently abandoned retail space. I can only imagine how many former Bed, Bath, and Beyond stores are now stocked with Halloween costumes. Oh, and here’s some trivia you can play at your upcoming Halloween party. Spirit Halloween is owned by Spencer’s Gifts, the mall staple with all the crazy merch. You’re welcome.
The broader takeaway is that Halloween shopping is only one piece of the retail pie, and if this is all part of an emerging norm—earlier and more online—it means the paradigm shift started in the mid-1990s is only getting more entrenched, especially among younger adults. It appears the train not only left the station, but you can’t even hear it anymore as it pounds down the tracks.
With holiday shopping now in full swing, from Target to Amazon and Walmart, there has been a lot of focus on the online arena. Sure, Target and Walmart still need to sell goods in their physical stores, but Target’s new immersive shopping experience makes it all too easy to just stay online to cinch the deal.
While I do not foresee BAM retailing being completely wiped out any time soon—including in what remains of my life—I do see it playing a gradually smaller role. The data bear this out: Older people are less likely to shop, including search, online. The youngest Baby Boomer is now 58, which means they probably have another 20-25 years for sure, maybe longer. That’s a shrinking pool of people, though. There are now 73 million of us, down from the 78 million born between 1946 and 1964. The decline will start picking up speed as time unfolds.
For those who grew up with e-commerce, or, like GenZers, who are digital natives, shopping online is a way of life. It is not an earth-shattering revolution in the way things are done. I truly feel sorry for those of my generation who did not keep up, and now need hand-holding practically every step of the way.
While I’m at it, might I suggest a Halloween costume for my non-evolving peers? How about going as a Digital Native? You might just find you like it. Find it online, of course.

Five Hours Or Less
People have laughed at Jeff Bezos for about as long as he has been in business with Amazon. When he launched Prime in 2005, people scoffed about why we might need something in two days. When he started talking about drones in 2013, people laughed even harder, and some people threatened to shoot them down from the sky.


Prime is still with us and going strong, and drones are starting to take off. But not everything can be carried by them, necessitating ground transportation, which Amazon also wants to happen faster and faster. Remember last week when we discussed Target’s sortation facilities to facilitate faster order fulfillment? Now Amazon has responded by increasing its sub-same-day delivery (SSD) to include 100,000 items. The goal is to never let more than five hours elapse between order placement, order picking, and order delivery, all within a 60-minute radius of a distribution center.


Not bad, once you factor in urban traffic, because SSD is only going to happen—for now, at least—in the nation’s largest cities. Think one million and up.

Amazon already has in place, or is planning to build, special smaller order fulfillment centers that only handle SSD orders. The sprawling million or more square feet DCs we see in industrial sectors along freeways and near airports will remain, but for all of the other things that Amazon sells. Basically, the new smaller warehouses will almost be like a convenience store equivalent.
Of course, there are some issues, like whether extra charges may be incurred by customers. After all, getting something delivered in a few hours comes at a price for the company. Walmart has already made such promises with its Walmart+ option. And then there is the thorny issue that many of the workers making this all happen are actually in the gig economy. This means they are not employees of the online vendor, and thus do not receive benefits. Individual states could weigh in on this in a crushing kind of way. I’m looking at you, California, as is everyone else, because you’ve already made noises about doing so.
I am most interested in the product selection that will comprise the 100,000 SKU assortment. It will have to be those items that are most frequently purchased, and typically with a current—and sometimes pressing—need. But these items are typically on the lower end of the price spectrum, and therefore don’t leave a whole lot of room for hefty margins. Volume could make up for that, but you have to actually get that volume first.
As for those gig workers, they will likely be driving personal vehicles instead of shiny new Amazon EV delivery vans. I’ve seen them before. They have a magnetic sign on their door, and they zoom around suburbia as fast as possible, because their paycheck is dependent upon their own ability to maintain delivery volume.


Then we have to think about a society that has become so busy and/or enamored of rapid delivery of everything. Are we really that busy? Or lazy, as some might say? Maybe I have it too good, with a Walmart and a United Supermarket both within a couple of minutes of my parking space. That’s pretty convenient for me, and I get what I want right now. Of course, it may mean I have to delay my workout by 15-30 minutes that day, but so be it.
And never mind that I will never be able to take advantage of SSD anyway, because of living outside a major urban area. Sorry, Amarillo and Canyon peeps: this will never happen here. You’ll have to move to Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, or Houston. And I suspect you would appreciate it greatly, because you won’t have to venture out into the never-ending traffic.
Now that I think about it, I’m rather happy that I don’t need SSD. I’ve got pretty much everything I need at my fingertips. Anything else can wait two days, just like I have been doing since Prime was introduced.
And don’t worry about drones out here on the High Plains. The way the wind was blowing two days ago makes that kind of thing a losing proposition. 

I think we’d all be having the last laugh on Mr. Bezos.
I mean, unless he could harness an 80mph wind to his advantage.
