man someone in the notes of that AI post left a several paragraph long response like “but what if students don’t know how to write well? what if they’re socioeconomically disadvantaged and never got good writing instruction? they should be allowed to use AI” no they fucking should not because that is not going to help them develop their writing or benefit from writing instruction if they’re not fucking doing any writing themselves! a student who does their own work and gets a low grade but still actually practices writing is learning at least ten times more than a student who just plugs the prompt into chatgpt and doesn’t write at all

#not to mention that universities have resources available to help with writing! your peers! your profs! the writing center! reference books!#there are so many resources online to help you develop a writing practice!#some universities also offer additional writing courses for students who feel they need them!#like both the universities I’ve taught at have had a two-level comp structure where students can self select into the additional course #AI is not going to help you learn shit. just write badly! in my class it’s nearly impossible to fail if you try your hardest!#writing courses are about meeting you where you are and developing your knowledge!

finally found a place to read With the Light online and i'm thrilled; if you haven't read this manga i do Legitimately recommend it

#N posts stuff #like don't get it wrong it Is Not a series about being autistic it Is a series about raising an autistic kid #but also don't be put off by that because it's legitimately a series that I feel Loves autistic people with its whole being #it's kind of a teaching manga so it showcases a lot of different opinions/characters/conflicts/etc. but the Framing is very consistent #in that the manga is Extremely of the opinion that autistic people are People who deserve to be Valued and Accepted As They Are #the onus for change is never put on autistic individuals the framing is basically Universal in the 'the World needs to change #to be more accepting' -- it's a very Social Model depiction of autism that ALSO never veers too far into the #'autism isn't even Really a disability' fallacy; it's very much a 'A lot of autistic people will need constant support in a variety of ways #throughout their lives but that isn't the roadblock preventing them from having their own lives; ableism in society is the roadblock'#the first two chapters are the hardest to get through bc they take place before Sachiko has any real understanding of autism and #so she's isolated and stressed out and the ignorance makes it difficult for her to care for Hikaru properly (there's also a lot of #other characters Blaming her for what's going on which goes unchallenged at this point though that changes later); but after she #understands what autism is she's Firmly in Hikaru's corner for the rest of the series - you can skip right to ch 3 without a problem #if you're not interested in reading about that initial conflict #there's still a Lot of conflict ofc but by then the chapters have some of my favorite moments so i don't want to advocate skipping #them; like Hikaru's daycare teacher explaining how Hikaru's difficulty speaking is the same as other kids' troubles with #things like jump-roping/etc.; and then a mother who has An Issue with Hikaru's presence in her daughter's class realizing the #depth of the problematic opinion bc Her mother (who had a stroke) faces similar ableism from her peers #i'm cutting this post off b4 the tags get Too long but if you're curious but still hesitant man. send me an ask and i will Happily #write an insanely long essay about how much i love this series; i have all the books i'm not excited about the online availability #for Me i'm excited bc i've been wanting to rec this manga for like almost a full decade and i can finally give you a link instead of #saying 'well. you can find used copies sometimes' lol

#god #the first part of today wasn't so bad #got v lost multiple times and was horribly sweaty but it mostly seemed like. manageable #but the online speech class...#i am dropping that thang #i was wanting to switch to all online classes but was swiftly reminded how much the website sucks #also realized that i may not actually need to take this new student course #there are no advisor appointments available until next week and the last day to add/drop classes is this week #also hardly any classes have slots left #or are online only or the professors have terrible reviews #am full of dread and feeling v hopeless #idk what i will do if i can't get myself through college

My final paper for my history degree is centering around a Black newspaper from the 1870s and it's such an amazing and kind of haunting read. Seeing a long dead writer drag lost cause idealogy through the mud with actual data and calls to action and knowing that the battle he's starting (desegregation of schools) won't be resolved for another century and arguably still isn't resolved today....

#I don't have a conclusion.#I guess... Live in the memory of the people before you. I don't know.#I'm writing about black labor unions during reconstruction idk if I've mentioned that before. Specially I'm writing about #The Colored National Labor Union which is really interesting and their union newspaper the New National Era is available online through #The library of congress though it's a bit hard to read If you're not used to the format #But if you have any interest in Black history or labor history I'd recommend giving it a shot #Unfortunately there's not very many secondary sources on this union because working class Black interests are extremely under studied #But it's fascinating if you're able to look for it #Anyway I have to get back to writing. But. History is important. That's all ig.

i found a folded schedule and campus map from 2014 in a book at my university’s library today. almost a decade it went untouched. my heart hurts i love life

#the pages it was between were in the chapter i needed too #sobbing #i didn’t even want to move it but i had to so i could finish working #i had to find a certain section for my prof and there weren’t any copies online #my dumbass crawling all over the shelves trying to match the letters + numbers on the call tag i found online #all the check out stamps in the front say 1999… 2001… i could cry #when i saw that i kind of just stood in the bookshelf aisle like. oh wow #in 1999 someone was just like me #except scanning and pictures didn’t exist so they had to take it to their dorm to read and had to keep coming back week after week to renew #it because they were so obsessed with writing about it for their class and couldn’t let it go #+ fighting with everyone else over the singular copy available #and then the next semester there was someone else and then…#TAKING OICTURES W THEIR PHOJE *** SORRY I NEVER REREAD #i just needed to get smth rq from the book so i left it behind after but it was so bittersweet :( like me n u are forever connected… ilu #yes i took the papers i found for. reasons. they are my treasures now

had a stress dream that I'd been enrolled in a fifth class this semester and not known about it and that I was failing because of never attending class or turning in assignments

#a sock speaks #grad school tag #I am planning to take a fifth class spring semester just to be sure I suffer as much as possible #I found out the class I didn't get into only had 4 slots available for in-person students bc online students were given priority #nobody else in my Greek class got into it #so it's slightly less embarrassing now #I am so thankful I don't have to present today. I think I'd burst into tears #as it is I'm going to do my bare minimum and go home. tomorrow I'll try to do better.#the stress is really hitting me. not that I can't handle this week but it warps how I envision the future #I remember how tired I get from finals and how much writing I have to do #(60 double-spaced pages of writing for my term papers plus my Hebrew exam)#I think I'll take an incomplete for my longest paper but then it'll still be hanging over my head so I have to at least write the framework #I wish I could look at what I'm doing and see that value of it. I know I love this material and I find it exciting #but I wish I were more excited about what I'm doing with it #if only I had more time

YKNOW i guess there's some good that comes from staring down the barrel of unemployment.

for example: all the government related shit i've needed to do for two-four years all takes place midafternoon on a wednesday. i could potentially get my driver's license and take the mandatory class for WA's first time home owner's assistance!

#i super dont want to go through a driving school for my learner's permit but unfortunately WA state makes it fucking IMPOSSIBLE #to schedule an appointment at your local DMV.#Yes there's a way to schedule it online. No it isn't functional.#trust me i've monitored it almost daily for two years.#it's never gonna tell you that any written test appointment is available anywhere other than Oak Harbor and no sooner than 3mo out #but i never have a wednesday afternoon at 2pm free to go into the dmv #and all of WA's FTHO stuff requires a class that takes place at like 6pm every other wednesday #what is this state's obsession with wednesdays

i will remain normal about having to actually spend my time studying and not hang out with people <- (lying)
