i love it when in jegulus fics they have to sprinkle in at least a BIT of bartylus. whether it’s barty james irrationally gets jealous over when there’s nothing going on between and him regulus and they’re js best friends, or barty’s the really flirtatious ex (that james again gets irrationally jealous of) or, him and regulus used to be fwb/hooked up once before, or it’s onesided pining from barty. like they said cheers no matter what universe we’re in those two have Something weird Going On

sometimes I think about how Lily is portrayed in some jegulus fics. Not all mind you, just some.

How sometimes it's depicted, or at least reads, as though James loses interest suddenly and switches to Regulus as his object of affection. Sure, Lily isn't actually into James in the fic but what it must do to her mentally. The boy who's been chasing you since the start has seemingly lost interest out of nowhere? Sure, it's often depicted as though for the past year/half a year that James has been treating her as a person, but I feel as though that's worse??? Like you start learning about me as a friend, the real me, and suddenly the interest you had was lost??? That would make me spiral so hard. Like what about my personality was so hard to love that even the boy who's been annoyingly chasing me since I was 11 doesn't want me after he gets to actually know me? Was it actually just a way to make fun of me for all these years? ect, ect

idk all this to say I prefer when jily is either in the past or it's a slow gradual thing or literally anything else other than if minor onesided (or not) jily is included at all James' interest in Lily being the equivalent of a light switch. I've seen it far too often and while yes, if in the fic Lily wasn't interested in him at all it was seen as a good thing, but I truly think Lily's feelings would be a little more mixed.

(my first time ever writing jegulus!!!)

Relationship: Regulus Black/James Potter

Summary: One of them needs to act like an adult and by the way James jolts like he’s been struck by lightning when their elbows accidentally brush, it’s not going to be him. James is too stubborn to bring it up, Regulus is too stubborn to leave it unsaid.

The school is quiet as they complete their prefect rounds. There isn't a sound save for the click of two pairs of footsteps on the stone tiles that bounce off the walls of the empty corridor. It's not unsurprising, it's the middle of end of year exams and most of the student body is too wrapped up in revision and cramming to be causing trouble after curfew. In two weeks time though, it’ll be chaos with post-exam celebrations, Quidditch and House Cup parties, and that renewed energy and sense of freedom with the summer holidays suddenly in reaching distance.

James walks one step ahead, eyes focused on the path ahead while Regulus trails behind. It’s the first time they’ve been alone together since the incident which in and of itself isn’t too odd - it’s not common to get paired up with different year groups for prefect duties - but Regulus has been getting the distinct impression that James has actively been trying to avoid him. If they’re in the library then James will give him an awkward half smile and a wave before finding a different group of people to sit with; he won’t hold eye contact outside of the briefest of glances; and after their last quidditch match Regulus had tried to the bigger person and congratulate him on Gryffindor's win but James had just given him the politest of thank yous before letting the crowd sweep him in their victory celebration.

They haven’t said much tonight outside of stilted small talk. It’s civil enough, but it’s not how things used to be. Light-hearted banter, underpinned by an attraction which up until last month Regulus would have sworn was just a onesided schoolboy crush. And now - well, he isn’t too sure.

James certainly isn't acting like it was nothing - a kiss that doesn't mean anything doesn't cause such a sudden personality shift. But he is also apparently too stubborn or proud to do anything about it.

Regulus lets out a silent huff and jogs half a step so they’re walking shoulder to shoulder. One of them needs to act like an adult and by the way James jolts like he’s been struck by lightning when their elbows accidentally brush, it’s not going to be him.

“James,” Regulus starts slowly, praying he's able to keep his voice calm and controlled, just like he was trained. “I wanted to talk to you about something, and I think you know what I’m going to say.”

He watches through the corner of his eye as James swallows, Adam's apple bobbing as he does so. “Yeah,” he mutters, “I thought you might.”
