Spare Me Your Mercy EP. 1 debuts at 2.2 - a record breaking high for Thai LGBTQ+ dramas [Nielsen ratings]

i don't dare to say it's the highest of all time because i'm not confident i've done enough research to know the ratings of all Thai LGBTQ+ dramas. perhaps @flowerbeasblog can assist me with explaining these ratings better. but out of all the dramas i know, it's definitely the highest so i have a hunch it's an all-time high record. below is a picture of One31 flexing their primetime drama ratings this week.

Spare Me Your Mercy EP. 1 highest peak reached 2.8 (nationwide) and 3.1 (urban area)

To give this context and compare them to other oneD (one31 originals that are often 8-10 episodes) dramas in 2024, here are the ratings for Thicha (starring Baifern Pimchanok and Peach Pachara) and The Empress of Ayodhaya (starring Mai Davika and Film Thanapat)

Thicha EP. 1 - 2.7 (this premiered the same week as Spare Me Your Mercy, airing in the Mon-Tue slot)

The Empress of Ayodhaya EP. 1 - 3.1 (highest rating for a debut/first episode in history of One31 dramas)

To Sir With Love and Century of Love debuted at 1.7 and 1.1 respectively

Another notable drama is The Miracle of Teddy Bear which is the first MLM primetime drama at CH3, that opened to a 0.9 ratings which was discussed by Thairath to be a disappointing rating for a CH3 lakorn (at the time) where they asked the questions if primetime audience were actually opened to BL series yet. So I may have been slightly obsessing over “To sir with love”, as one does, and a thing that has been circling in my head for the last few days is the way Tian's confrontation with his mother at the start of episode 13 and his talk with Yang at the end of the same episode echo and oppose each other.

Madame Li comes to Tian when he is in love, hopeful, begging for a chance at happiness, and how does she respond? She crushes it, with the revelation about Jiu and Mr. Ma yes, but mostly with everything else. You will never know love, she says, except mine. That stifling love who wants him to be someone else, that chips at who he is again and again and again.

Then Yang finds his brother (heart)broken, and Tian holds him back to confess his love, again, now in despair and shame and self loathing. And Yang response to that is as it has always been, that his brother is wonderful just as he is. You deserve love he promises, and I love you I love you I love you. A love with no reservation and for all that Tian is, a love always there.

And they both love Tian, they are both afraid and worried for him, both are going to great lengths to protect him, at this point both believe that Jiu has lied to Tian and played him. And. Yet. His mother again puts the blame on him, on who he is, makes him guilty of his own betrayal. His brother reminds him that it's not true, that the betrayer is to blame, and that the fault never laid with him.

And so it's no surprise that Tian pushes away his mother and the prison her love has built around him, but seeks the comfort of his brother's love who has always celebrated who he is.

trigger warning: animal abuse

the empress of ayodhaya is under fire for poisoning a cat for a scene in the show. said cat is alive but was convulsing severely on cam with vomiting and twitching but all that was used in the scene. one 31 played along earlier when people appreciated saying an oscar should be provided for that cat for realistic acting. but later people caught on so they issued an apology. now people are asking for a ban on the show. have any thai lakorns been banned before for animal abuse though?

oh lord, I had no idea at all since I haven't watched the last episode yet... that's a little crazy to do in 2024 but I really don't think the show will get banned, I heard it had the highest number of viewers in the history of one31 for its first ep & it has a very famous cast... so I don't think it will happen. besides, I'm not a lakorn expert but I don't think there's a precedent of other lakorns being banned for animal abuse. people are right to call it out though, and hopefully this won't happen again :(

Episode 5: Who do I really love?

As Phumjai wades through all his emotions to find out what he is really feeling, Yang is torn between his love for Phumjai and his need to protect Phumjai. We still don't know the meaning of "Do you think you can escape?" But it looks like some bad people are after Yang. Maybe they fell into debt and he either lost his parents or was sent away to be protected. And now whoever these people are they found him and they are coming after him. Phumjai is just going to be caught up in a mess that doesn't concern him if Yang stays true to his love. So, here we see the ultimate BL trope being used - Yang lies to protect Phumjai from this unknown evil (whatever that is).

I like how they are using tropes to push this story forward without being weird about it. I like the push and pull dynamic between Yang and Phumjai. I knew it was too early for them to fall in love and have a good time. But we at least know that they both have fallen for each other. Now they just need to stand with each other and face whatever mess is coming their way.
