Chapter 1088: Ethics 101
This write-up is a bit delayed, but I definitely wanted to comment on a few things.
For one thing, Garp’s lesson feels like he’s teaching a philosophy class.
So, that’s probably why it reminded me of Chidi in The Good Place, particularly when he was going over the Trolley Problem. (It’s not an exact replica of the ethical dilemma here but there are similarities.)
Garp gets lectured for telling his proteges to protect the future...
Of course, the Marines declaring “All lives are equal” is downright laughable. These are the people who serve at the whim of the Celestial Dragons, wiped out Ohara, Flevance, and, recently, Lulusia.
They’re also content to sacrifice troops rather than take on an Emperor, so it takes a SWORD Member (Koby) to step in.
It’s interesting that Koby volunteered here; Blackbeard wasn’t actually interested in him in the first place.
Still, the fact that Blackbeard took this deal means Koby’s reputation is widespread. Rocky Port reveal when, Oda?!
Back to the present day, is it weird to say that Garp reminds me a bit of Luffy here?
Luffy has unwavering faith in his nakama. He has people on his crew who can do things he can’t, and he can do things they can’t. Garp here, like his grandson, puts his unmitigated faith in his people--though in this case, it’s more a case of handing the baton to the next generation. We’ve been focusing mostly on the next generation of pirates in the Worst Generation, but this is the next generation of the Marines stepping forward into the limelight.
Once the youngin’s are off, Garp returns his focus to his former protégé.
And all I can think of is Monty Python.
Okay, fine. It’s quite compelling that we’ve got Garp protecting and encouraging his current batch of proteges while facing off against his former protégé in Kuzan. (Kuzan’s line last chapter about Garp raising enemies is still ringing in my ears; that was cold.)
We also get a flashback, learning Koby’s been doing the “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” training montage from Mulan after training.
“You must be swift as the coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon”
Koby is so wholesome that even his attack has a wholesome name.
Still, this is very impressive. Koby stocks on the rise.
Garp, Grus, and Helmeppo get back to the ship, just leaving Garp remaining on Hachinosu.
Look, I have plenty of issues with Garp, but to his credit here, he’s willing to walk the walk when it comes to saving the future generation over the old generation. He sacrifices himself so they ship can escape.
(Also, what was the point in Tashigi being here? I was really hoping we were going to see Smoker at some point, but nope. She’s just hanging out in the background doing nothing. Yeesh, let the woman do something for once, Oda.)
This looks bad for Garp. It feels like a sendoff, and Garp--a D.--is laughing in the face of death.
I don’t think he’s dead, though. For one thing, this is One Piece where death is made up and the points don’t matter. And the narration box says he’s MIA, which is quite different than some of the other more dramatic descriptions of defeat we’ve gotten in recent chapters.
Second, this is not the first time we’ve seen a D. face death with a smile and survive. (Remember Law’s smirk when Doffy had a gun to his chest on the rooftop in Dressrosa?)
Third, if Saul survived Kuzan’s attack, I’d imagine Garp could, too. I could see the ice here is actually saving him from what looks like an ugly stab wound.
More than that, though, it’s makes little strategic sense to kill him. Blackbeard wants a hostage to bargain with the World Government for Hachinosu’s sovereignty. Garp is a significantly more high-value hostage than Koby; it would not be smart to kill him and lose their leverage when they could use him.
Narrative-wise, there’s also a lot left to settle between Luffy and Garp. And what about Dragon?
There’s so much setup with Hachinosu that we’re definitely going there with the Straw Hats at some point. I still think Luffy and Law team up again now that Law is both crewless and shipless, and if Blackbeard takes the surviving Hearts hostage, that will give the renewed alliance reason to go there. Law would also likely be able to save a frozen Garp using his fruit.
All of that being said, I’m looking forward to returning to Egghead next chapter as the Marines arrive.

chapter 1088 spoilers
Yeah, I think roydeezed called it last week with this great post on Garp and chapter 1087. (I'll tag when I know they've read the new chapter). They pointed out that Garp wasn't smiling, but now he is. Ah, gonna miss you old man.
You might not have lived like one, but you died a hero.
Kuzan maybe saved the fleet by sacrificing Garp, but not sure. Fandom's focusing on Koby, and it's great, but the loss of Garp is *oof*. Garp would want me to focus on Koby too.
If it is missing in action to reappear again, then fair enough, but he's smiling.
**Just took off the “read below the cut” divider for release of the official, and just realised how much Garp’s laughter looks like Joy boy’s. I can’t be the only one who noticed, right?

Egg-cellent Timing
Rereading 1088 as this manga break approaches its halfway point.
Garp’s lesson at the start of the chapter is really so great, frames SWORD’s infiltration of Fullalead perfectly, and has me wanting to look at a few recent similar situations where the future of the young is a consideration.
The strongest current parallel to Garp ensuring the escape of the young marines, is the SHs on Egghead currently having been tasked with escaping Egghead with Vegapunk, though it’s mirrored.
Following chapter 1088, Vegapunk is a stand in for the “old man” from Garp’s lesson. According to grandpa Garp, he is the one who should be left behind, yet we’re trying to save him. I have a sneaking suspicion that the doctor’s hours are numbered and that we won’t be seeing him or potentially any of the Vegapunks beyond this arc.
Then looking back to the previous arc, Usopp’s rescue of the samurai during Wano, particularly of darling Kiku. Due to the time traveling journey she went on, Kiku is now the youngest of the retainers, by a sizable margin. Kiku is the “baby” from Garp’s lesson and she has so much untapped potential. Garp would strongly approve of Usopp’s incredible devotion to rescuing the samurai, and himself too.
I wonder if Izo was thinking about how Kiku looks very young for someone who should be 42, did he learn that his sister is a time traveler? I imagine he figured it out on his own, right? The man spent a good few years sailing on the same ship as Toki.
To wrap up, I want to raise a question about Film Red and Uta.
Should the Livestream Transponder Snails not have washed up on the shore of the island which young Uta was living on, how would that have affected her future? Which remember, are a type of snail developed by Vegapunk, further tying all of this together.
Uta was someone longing to be free of the confines of her situation on the isolated island, longing to share her potential with the world, but there was no rescue boat for her to escape on.

This chapter caught me by surprise.
I admit I somehow expected Sabo to be captured by Teach because of his Devil Fruit.
I expected Luffy and Garp to team up at some point to save him. I expected Garp to sacrifice himself to protect the young generation.
Actually, it's the opposite which is happening. Sabo didn't get caught. Garp is the caught one.
So Luffy will have to rescue him. But It's not going to be with Sabo, but with Koby.
Let's be honest Koby might be strong but he's not the main character.
Actually, capturing Garp might be a right motivation for Luffy to fight Teach for once.
I know Teach captured Pudding, who is apparently Sanji's love-interest.
Anyway it's going to be a hellish fight between Luffy and Teach. Teach needs to learn his lesson.
I really can't wait for more!

As much as I've enjoyed all the lore dumping and world building we've gotten in these last few months (yes it's been months!), I'm really excited to be getting back to the strawhats. I've missed that funky little bunch.
(On an aside well be getting new strawhat content and anime gear 5 within a week of each other! It's a great time to be a one piece fan!)

I'm torn
On the one hand I need to know what happens to Garp
But on the other hand I wanna see Gecko and Perona reunite (Father & Daughter is so cute)
AND on the OTHER hand I wanna see Pudding again
AND on the OTHER hand I wanna see the big mom pirates again(Still bitter about how they were treated in Wano)
I could honestly care less about the strawhats
***Spoilers***
I love Garp so much, he’s like the coolest grandpa ever!
I just couldn’t imagine One Piece without him!!!
He’s just everything!
However, I hope that Dragon has a more frequent presence now that Garp is MIA. I’d love to see him more than anything!

OP 1088 Manga Spoilers:
First things first, I love the color spread. The East Blue designs are so nostalgic, and it's interesting to see Oda try and replicate the style he used 20 years ago. Honestly, I'm pretty hyped about the Netflix adaptation, because of the fact that Oda was so actively involved in it.
As for the actual chapter. Well. Garp seems to be going on the route of Jaguar D. Saul rather than just an outright death, which is slightly reassuring? Aokiji used Ice Time Capsule, which is a technique he only uses when he wants to capture people rather than kill them. So I get the feeling that Garp's life is secure for now, because honestly Aokiji doesn't seem like the kind of guy to straight up cold-heartedly murder his former mentor, or let anybody else do it either.
Garp's lesson is honestly pretty morally provoking, too. You have Coby giving the morally clean answer to his old man and baby dilemma, and then Garp corrects him by pointing out that you must value and nurture the future, in a way stating that the life of an old man is not as valuable as that of a young one. It really hits home at the end of the chapter, when his students put his lessons to use and abandon him on Pirate Island.
Coby beats the fraud allegations in this chapter too. His intensive dedication and training regime ON TOP of Garp's training is pretty impressive. His Honesty Impact against the hand was a powerful ass move and enough evidence to remove him from fraudwatch. He's definitely not on par with Luffy, but I believe he's at least YC1 level right now, which is not bad at all. I don't think he showed Conqueror's Haki though, because there was no lightning. He seems to be the inheritor of Garp's will, both in his Armament Haki centric fighting style and his goals and vision.
The chapter ends with Marine ships sailing to Egghead Island, where Luffy and the Straw Hats are currently based, leading up to an obvious conflict between Emperor Luffy and the Marines on the futuristic island. What do y'all think? Will Garp be killed, handed over, or preserved? Maybe we even get a Garp seraphim? How do y'all think the battle between Luffy and the Marines will unfold?
