I have posted this elsewhere here, tacked on to the tail end of a long reblog, but I went to reference it the other day and wanted to have it—one of my life-long favorite quotes—in a post of its own for easy reference. (Especially because it’s a widely mis-attributed quote, usually to his son, the more famous Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.)

That was the parting wisdom our Philmont ranger left us with as we set out on our own for the remainder of our trek, and though I did not understand it viscerally then, the quote stuck with me forever, a sturdy hiking stick by my side for when, a few short years later, I suddenly began living it in ways I was unprepared to deal with.
Alienation, reverse culture-shock, the inability to see the world—writ large and writ small—the same way I had before, the need to go and inability to stay, all the wonderful and terrible ways that travel changed me. Beautiful and haunting, this comic captures it all ❤️
