A mind stretched by new experiences can never return to its former dimensions. —Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (loosely; from Chapter XI of The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table, 1858)
I have posted this elsewhere here, tacked on to the tail end of a long reblog, but I went to reference it the other day and wanted to have it—one of my life-long favorite quotes—in a post of its own for easy reference. (Especially because it’s a widely mis-attributed quote, usually to his son, the more famous Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.)

“Every man of reflection is vaguely conscious of an imperfectly-defined circle which is drawn about his intellect. He has a perfectly clear sense that the fragments of his intellectual circle include the curves of many other minds of which he is cognizant. He often recognizes these as manifestly concentric with his own, but of less radius. On the other hand, when we find a portion of an arc outside of our own, we say it intersects ours, but are very slow to confess or to see that it circumscribes it. Every now and then a man’s mind is stretched by a new idea or sensation, and never shrinks back to its former dimensions. --Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. in The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table, published in The Atlantic Monthly, September 1858.

Poem of the Week
Poem of the Week
Daily Trials by a Sensitive Man Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Oh, there are times When all this fret and tumult that we hear Do seem more stale than to the sexton’s ear His own dull chimes. Ding dong! ding dong! The world is in a simmer like a sea Over a pent volcano,—woe is me All the day long! From crib to shroud! Nurse o’er our cradles screameth lullaby, And friends in boots tramp round us as we…

Holmes Sr. and Jr. don’t mean to antagonize one another. It just happens. On a daily basis. Intentionally.

I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving - we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it - but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.
