Trichothraupis griseonota Cavarzere et al., 2024 (new species)
Tumblr media
(Illustration of a male individual of Trichothraupis griseonota by Eduardo Brettas, from Cavarzere et al., 2024)
Meaning of name: griseonota = gray mark [in Latin]
Suggested common name: Andean black-goggled tanager
Age: Holocene (Meghalayan), extant
Where found: Forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina
How much is known: At least 59 collected specimens are held in museum collections.
Notes: T. griseonota is a tanager, an extremely diverse group of songbirds from the American tropics. It was formerly thought to represent a population of the other only species in the genus Trichothraupis, the black-goggled tanager (T. melanops). However, the two are genetically distinctive and geographically separated, with T. melanops only being found in the Atlantic Forest of eastern South America.
Based on examination of specimens held in museum collections, the authors of a new paper further confirm that the two populations can be reliably distinguished based on anatomical characteristics, and thus describe the Andean population as a new species. T. griseonota most obviously differs from T. melanops in that the males have a more extensive black mask across the face and a grayish (instead of greenish-olive) back. In addition, both male and female T. griseonota have paler underparts and on average shorter feet compared to T. melanops.
Reference: Cavarzere, V., T.V.V. Costa, G.S. Cabanne, N. Trujillo-Arias, R.S. Marcondes, and L.F. Silveira. 2024. A new species of tanager (Aves: Thraupidae) from the Eastern slopes of the Andes. Zootaxa 5468: 541–556. doi: 10.11646/zootaxa.5468.3.7

S - Slings and Olive Branches by Gibraltar - The first tale of the Starship Reykjavik. If you love awesome characters with many layers and also some supremely badass moments, Sam's the author you wanna read. Every bit as skilled at character, world and plot building as any professional, Gibraltar's stories of the Reykjavik are funny, heartfelt and Nandi Trujillo will just win you over literally in this first, short story.
L - Land of Song by @b-radley66 - Generally, you know that when B writes anything, it's going to be plot-heavy, dense and guaranteed to require at least one spreadsheet. But the ability to keep all of that not only in-line but also moving forward is a skill not many authors can claim, and B is an expert at it. Plus, his OCs are so good that you'll be hunting various wikis going, "But wait, they're not canon??"
W - When the Lights Come On by @btwxsixesandsevens - A beautiful little original tale set in the Star Wars universe. I love the atmosphere of this one; the way that it correlates so much to memories of my own childhood. Some things are pan universal, I think. And the author is a master worldbuilder who did stunningly cool things with zabrak culture that I still think about regularly.
A - A Higher Power When You Look (Also on Ad Astra) by @daraoakwise - An absolutely, mind-blowingly epic retelling of a lot of the Original Series cast's tales for the AOS. Dara takes a lot of the sillier premises in the AOS line and makes it all make sense. Her character work and world building and plotting are out of this world.
L - Lost… and Found by @shadowmaat - SURGE SQUAD!! Shadowmaat's OC clones (and jedi!) are incredibly charming and this is where the tale begins. Guaranteed if you read it, you'll knock out the whole series and want more. (And I am still excited for the Blackbirds crossover that will one day happen!)
K - Kaminoan Copyright by independent_variables - Awesome world-building, which seems to be a thing for me. LOL! But it's a short, punchy tale about what the chips entailed for the clones and how things change when Anakin -- of all people, but it makes perfect sense! -- finds out about them and word spreads. Sweet ending, too.
E - Every Moment a Step Forward by alyyks - Bail/Bre/Maul is one of the ships/tags I pioneered, so it's an outright thrill everytime someone writes it. And alyyks is an awesome author in general, so not only do you have an awesome author writing my own faves, but the story's excellent. It touches on a Maul who is very much living with his damage, and how important the steady love and support of a family is to his quality of life. Just a psychologically excellent tale.
R - Rest and Ruckus (archive locked) by @sharpest_asp - A gift that made me beam, this one is Corry and Scotty going camping up in the woods of Maine, with all the inherent chaos that usually accompanies those two. Sweet, funny, in-character and atmospheric, it's a quick and lovely jaunt with a bunch of excellent mental images.

Day 11: Specter
10/11: Specter
Universe // Characters: Mariposa // Horacio Carrillo (This fic takes place between Mariposa and Dustland Fairytale)
Horacio Carrillo is a man of habit. He likes having a routine and sticking to it. His current habit is watching you go through your nightly routine. For all your flexibility and “roll with it” attitude, you too appreciate a methodical way of living your life. It’s a Sunday night and you’ve just gotten back from your weekly dinner with Trujillo’s family. You toe your shoes off at the front door of your apartment and move quickly through the space, gun in hand, looking for anything out of sorts. He could have told you he already checked and the space was clear of any threats but you wouldn’t have believed him.
You go to the kitchen, put away any of the leftovers that were sent home with you and sigh wearily. “Well, Horacio, Señora Trujillo will not give up on teaching me how to make empanadas. She’s even more convinced to do it now since…”
Your sentence remains unfinished but he understands the message. He’s getting better at that now. He smiles though, empanadas were his favorite food. “You’ll get it, querida.”
You scoff, fill a glass with water, and carry it back to the bedroom with you. You change into what passes for sleepwear: cotton shorts and one of his old olive green t-shirts. He’s not pleased with how small you look in the garment. You’ve lost weight, more than is healthy. Bones create sharp points under the worn cotton and it pains him to observe just how fragile these last few months have made you. You give one last tired sigh, before sliding into bed and turning out the light. Just like every other night, you pull the second pillow close to your body, wrapping your arms around it.
“Good night, Horacio.”
He leans over you, tries to get as close as he can without disturbing you. “Good night, mi amor.”
There is the faintest twitch of a smile. Maybe you heard him tonight.
Some nights he stays in the corner of the room, watching you sleep. But tonight he’s restless and in the past, that energy disrupts your slumber. So he leaves you to your dreams and wanders the streets of Medellín. He passes by Trujillo’s apartment just in time to see the lights go out there. He will never be able to repay that man for all his sacrifice and loyalty. So he does the only thing he knows how at this point, and he checks the perimeter of the block for any threats, and makes sure the door and windows to the apartment are locked. He’s getting better at focusing energy on turning the little levers for those sparse, forgetful moments when doors are left unlocked.
Next, he pays a visit to the alleyway, the area where everything spiraled out of control. If he looks hard enough, he can still see the bloodstains on the wall. He makes himself stand there, pressing every ounce of remorse and apology he can into the rocks, concrete, and dirt. He wants to make amends. He wants to set things right and he tries to make that happen through sheer stubbornness. An odd breeze makes its way through the narrow space and Horacio sees a figure standing at the end of the alley.
It’s the boy.
He starts to say he’s sorry but the figure shakes his head. “Not yet.”
Horacio nods. Forgiveness takes time, he knows that, accepts that. He blinks and the boy is gone once more. There are still a few more hours before dawn so he takes a pass through Carlos Holguin base. There are a handful of lights on around the offices but only one, a faint desk light, is on in one of the bunk rooms. Javier Peña is sitting at the desk, staring at a half-filled whiskey glass. Just like with you, Horacio stands in the corner and observes. Javier’s eyes lift and he stares directly at Horacio for a few heartbeats before sighing, rubbing a hand over his face.
“Fuck.”
Horacio smiles sadly. “My sentiments exactly, my friend.”
He knows what Javier is doing, knows about Los Pepes and Berna and Judy Moncada. Being on the other side has afforded Horacio with a wealth of information and a much clearer view of the players and the field. He wants to tell Javier that he’s sorry for what happened in the alley because now he realizes that is when Javier’s faith was shaken. Not just in Horacio, although that did happen, but in the entire process. He can see it so clearly now, how Javier is struggling with the idea of becoming something he’s not in order to catch Escobar. Horacio wants to warn him, redirect him, so that he doesn’t fall down the same ravine that Horacio did. But Javier is isolating himself to keep the fallout zone as small as possible.
He witnessed you do it after the events of the alley.
As he watches Javier finish off the whiskey and fall into the cot for whatever sleep he can manage to get, Horacio thinks about the similarities that you and Javier share: you both care too much, selflessly put work above your own health, and are loyal to a fault. The more that he thinks about it, the more he wishes you two had met at some point before now. You both could use the camaraderie and support. Maybe, if you did have each other, you wouldn’t be rail thin from grief and he wouldn’t be drinking himself to death before continuously walking in and out of the lion’s den.
Maybe this is his penance, watching the people he loved systematically destroy themselves just as he had. Being forced to watch them follow separate roads that lead to the same destruction. He contemplates this as he makes his way to the cemetery, his new home of dirt and stone. The path is familiar, it is part of his new routine now. When the sun dips below the horizon, he makes his way through the city, watching over those who are still committed to the fight, trying to intervene when he can, despite his limitations. But when the sun starts to make its reappearance, he makes sure he’s standing in front of the tombstone that is now a reminder of his hasty decisions and arrogance.
Colonel Horacio Carrillo

The Color of Enslavement In recovering the history of the Indigenous slavery in the Americas, one of many factors to surface in the records are the representations of skin color, which often influenced social status and manifest in racism, colonization, and slavery. In Nancy E. van Deusen book Global Indios she examines more than 100 lawsuits, many of which reveal how the color of skin is tied to whether an individual could be enslaved or not legally. In 1548, Catalina and her daughter María de la Cruz were described as “esclavas loras,” a color van Deusen defines as “similar to the dark brown color of wheat when it is ripened.” In the 1560 case Pedro was described as bronzed, “tostado.” In 1575 bill of sale, Lucia of Panama was described as the color of “cooked quince.” By the 16th c. the phrase “color indio” had become synonymous with slavery, as it was when Balthasar was described as the “color indio” when he was being sold in the village of Almagro in 1541. In Almon Lauber’s book, Indian Slavery in Colonial Times with the Present Limits of the United States, he cites a 1712 investigation, where Governor Robert Hunter discovered that “Spanish American Indians” had been sold in New York and kept in bondage seven years “by reason of their color, which is swarthy.” Skin color is also reflected in the castas, the language of mixture that developed within Portuguese and Spanish society, including people who were labeled as Colores Quebrados, Colores Revueltos, Colores Sospechos, Broken Colores, Mixed Colors, and Suspicious Colors. As a category, "color" was first included in the 1850 U.S. Federal censuses. While enumerators were instructed to list people as white, black, or mulatto, sometimes they went off script. That year, in the northern district of New Mexico, there were several people identified as “copper,” including 26-year-old Maria Guadalupe whose place of birth is noted as “Indian Country.” In 1850 and 1860 she was enumerated in the household of Jose Lino Trujillo and wife, Maria Geronima Valdez, but was likely the 4-year-old Ute baptized in 1829 identified as the servant in the home of Geronima’s parents, Francisco Antonio Valdez and Maria Rafaela Varela. In the 1930s and 1940s, anthropologist Carlos Rusconi, who was likely heavily influenced by early social darwinism, interviewed dozens of formerly enslaved Indigenous people in Argentina, and in some cases their descriptions included skin color. Tomas Culipís was described as copper colored. Antonio Kalcuer’s skin was described as olive colored. The skin of María Isabel Unepeo was described as clear pink. Marciana Fernández’s skin was described as dark red. Julián Silva’s skin was described as tanned. Manquel’s skin was dark tan. Andrés Jofré’s skin was noted as white, but “tanned by the sun.” These representations may tell us more about the colonial gaze, but they also reveal why a more complex assessment of slavery is necessary.

ARMAS BLANCAS:
PROFESOR: Miriam Sandsoul LUGAR: Gimnasio, 2ª Planta.
ARTES MARCIALES:
PROFESOR: Diego Trujillo LUGAR: Gimnasio, Tercera Planta.
POST-CRIMEN
PROFESOR: Oliver Bennet LUGAR: La Academia. Totalmente indispensable.
INTERROGATORIOS:
PROFESOR: Craig Jones LUGAR: La Academia.
PROFESOR: Ruby Robertson LUGAR: La Academia.
CIBER-INSEGURIDAD
PROFESOR: Anonymous LUGAR: La Academia.
PROFESOR: Tutor Personal LUGAR: La Academia.

Extremadura, homeland of the first white colonizers of the American continents
In the hilltop town of Trujillo, above the sunburnt plain of Extremadura, there stands a statue of a man who changed the course of history. Francisco Pizarro was born here, the illegitimate son of a Castilian soldier. Five hundred years ago, he left to seek his fortune in the New World. With fewer than 200 troops and a few dozen dogs and horses, he conquered the vast empire of the Incas. The Spanish colonisation of South America had begun.
Francisco Pizarro wasn't Trujillo's only conquistador. His three half brothers were all born here, and followed him to the New World, as did their neighbour Francisco de Orellana, the first European to map the Amazon. So, what made this town such a rich breeding ground for soldiers and adventurers?
Well, Trujillo has always been a tough old place. "Its inhabitants normally survive on pillage and trickery," wrote El Idrisi, an Arab traveller, in the 14th century – and pillage and trickery were what the Pizarros did best. They sent back shiploads of plundered gold and filled their home town with flamboyant mansions. Francisco was murdered in South America (serves him right), still searching for El Dorado, and Trujillo sank back into obscurity. Half a millennium later, the town that his riches built remains.
It used to take seven hours to drive the 250km from Madrid to Trujillo. Now the trip takes under three, along a modern motorway which has opened up a part of Spain that was once way off the tourist trail. Driving through Extremadura – still the poorest, most sparsely populated part of Spain – you begin to understand why it produced so many conquistadors. Baking hot in summer and bitterly cold in winter, it's a hard land that breeds hard people with little to lose. A place where widows still wear black, and some houses still have no running water.
Cortés, scourge of the Aztecs, also came from Extremadura, and the view of his homeland hasn't changed much since he set off to conquer Mexico. Stunted oaks and olive trees provide the only cover in this harsh terrain. But although it sounds bleak, this dramatic landscape has a barren beauty. Far from the crowded beach resorts, this is Spain's unspoilt heartland. It's popular with hunters and birdwatchers, rather than sunbathers or sightseers. From the battlements, you look out across dusty meadows, towards the Portuguese frontier. Birds of prey hover, the only sound is the wind, humming in the lemon trees. It's hard to believe Madrid is just hours away.
