How To Install Vintage Kitchen Sinks With Drainboards?
Vintage Kitchen Sinks with Drainboards: Embrace Nostalgic Functionality and Style
In the world of interior design, vintage elements hold a certain charm and nostalgia. When it comes to kitchens, vintage kitchen sinks with drainboards have become a popular choice among homeowners. These sinks not only add a touch of elegance and character to a kitchen but also offer practical functionality. In this article, we will explore the features, benefits, and tips for incorporating vintage kitchen sinks with drainboards into your home.
Introduction
Vintage kitchen sinks with drainboards offer a unique blend of aesthetics and functionality. These sinks harken back to a time when craftsmanship and durability were valued in household fixtures. Whether you’re renovating your kitchen or simply adding a touch of vintage charm, these sinks can be an excellent choice.
The Charm of Vintage Kitchen Sinks
Vintage kitchen sinks have a certain allure that is hard to replicate with modern designs. The intricate details, ornate patterns, and elegant curves evoke a sense of nostalgia. They can serve as a focal point in your kitchen, creating a conversation piece that showcases your personal style and appreciation for the past.
What Are Drainboards?
Drainboards are an integral part of vintage kitchen sinks. These are flat, slightly sloped surfaces adjacent to the sink basin. Their purpose is to provide a designated space for drying dishes or food preparation. The water from the dishes flows directly into the drainboard, keeping the countertop clean and dry.
Advantages of Vintage Kitchen Sinks With Drainboards
Increased Counter Space
One of the primary advantages of vintage kitchen sinks with drainboards is the extra counter space they provide. Instead of cluttering your countertop with a separate drying rack, the drainboard offers a convenient area to air-dry dishes or place freshly washed produce.
Efficient Water Management
With a built-in drainboard, water from washed dishes or produce can flow directly into the sink, preventing spills and messes on the countertop. This efficient water management system ensures that your kitchen remains clean and organized.
Easy Cleanup
The smooth surface of vintage kitchen sinks with drainboards makes cleaning a breeze. The porcelain or stainless steel finishes are resistant to stains and can be easily wiped clean. Additionally, the sloped design of the drainboard allows water to flow directly into the sink, preventing the accumulation of standing water.
Types of Vintage Kitchen Sinks With Drainboards
Vintage kitchen sinks with drainboards come in various materials, each with its own unique characteristics. Let’s explore some of the popular options:
Cast Iron Sinks
Cast iron sinks are renowned for their durability and classic appeal. They are coated with a layer of enamel, which not only provides a glossy finish but also protects the sink from scratches and stains. Cast iron sinks can withstand heavy daily use and retain their charm for years to come.
Porcelain Sinks
Porcelain sinks exude elegance and sophistication. Their smooth, non-porous surface is resistant to stains and easy to clean. Porcelain sinks are available in a wide range of colors, allowing you to choose a shade that complements your kitchen’s overall aesthetic.
Stainless Steel Sinks
Stainless steel sinks are known for their sleek, modern look and excellent durability. They are resistant to corrosion, heat, and stains, making them a practical choice for busy kitchens. Stainless steel sinks are also easy to maintain and can withstand the test of time.
Restoring Vintage Kitchen Sinks
If you come across a vintage kitchen sink with drainboards that needs some love, restoration can bring it back to its former glory. Here are some tips for restoring vintage sinks:
Cleaning and Maintenance
Start by thoroughly cleaning the sink and drainboard using gentle cleansers and non-abrasive scrub brushes. Remove any rust or mineral deposits with a mixture of vinegar and water. Regular maintenance, such as wiping the sink dry after use and avoiding abrasive cleaners, will help preserve its condition.
Repairing Chips and Cracks
If the sink has any chips or cracks, there are repair kits available that can help you fix them. Follow the instructions carefully and take your time to ensure a seamless repair. Remember to match the color of the repair material with the original sink color for a cohesive look.
Refinishing and Reglazing
For sinks with worn-out finishes, refinishing or reglazing can breathe new life into them. This process involves removing the old finish, repairing any imperfections, and applying a new coating. Hiring a professional for this task ensures a high-quality result.
Where to Find Vintage Kitchen Sinks With Drainboards
If you’re on the hunt for a vintage kitchen sink with a drainboard, here are some places to explore:
Architectural Salvage Yards
Architectural salvage yards often have a wide selection of vintage fixtures, including kitchen sinks. These establishments specialize in reclaiming and reselling architectural elements from old buildings, making them a treasure trove for unique and authentic pieces.
Antique Stores
Antique stores are another excellent source of vintage kitchen sinks. Visit local antique shops or browse online platforms to discover hidden gems from the past. Be prepared to invest time and effort into finding the perfect sink that matches your preferences.
Online Marketplaces
Online marketplaces like eBay, Etsy, and specialized vintage websites offer a vast selection of vintage kitchen sinks. These platforms allow you to search by specific criteria, such as size, material, and style, making it easier to find the sink that suits your needs.
Incorporating Vintage Kitchen Sinks Into Your Design
Vintage kitchen sinks with drainboards can be integrated into various design styles. Here are a few ideas to inspire you:
Classic Farmhouse Style
In a farmhouse-style kitchen, a vintage sink with a drainboard fits perfectly. Pair it with rustic wooden cabinets, open shelves, and vintage-inspired accessories to create a warm and inviting ambiance.
Retro and Mid-Century Modern
For a retro or mid-century modern aesthetic, consider a colorful porcelain sink with a bold pattern. Combine it with vibrant tiles, sleek appliances, and retro-inspired furniture for a playful and nostalgic vibe.
Industrial Chic
In an industrial-style kitchen, a stainless steel vintage sink with a drainboard adds an element of functionality and raw appeal. Combine it with exposed brick walls, concrete countertops, and metal accents for an edgy and modern look.
Installation and Maintenance Tips
Proper installation and maintenance are essential for preserving the beauty and functionality of your vintage kitchen sink with a drainboard. Keep the following tips in mind:
Proper Installation
Ensure that the sink is properly installed and sealed to prevent leaks and water damage. Seek professional help if needed to ensure a secure and sturdy installation.
Regular Cleaning and Care
Clean the sink and drainboard regularly to prevent the buildup of grime and stains. Use non-abrasive cleaners and soft cloths to avoid scratching the surface. Wipe the sink dry after each use to prevent water spots and maintain its shine.
Avoiding Common Mistakes
Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can damage the sink’s finish. Be cautious with heavy and sharp objects to prevent chips and scratches. Additionally, do not let standing water accumulate in the drainboard for an extended period.
Conclusion
Vintage kitchen sinks with drainboards offer a delightful combination of timeless charm and practical functionality. Whether you’re drawn to the elegance of porcelain or the durability of stainless steel, these sinks can elevate the style of your kitchen while providing additional counter space and efficient water management. With proper care and maintenance, a vintage sink can become a cherished centerpiece in your home.

The first thing you notice about this home is how posts appear to prop the upper sections up at a tilt. The 2002 contemporary home in Vershire, VT is perfect for the art lover. It's not old as far as houses go, but the 4bd, 3ba home needs some TLC and a good cleaning. They're asking $499K, and you get 14 acres of property.
What a lovely entrance.
These glass doors open directly into the living room. 2 steps and a stone structure to the right are the first things you see. You may know by now how I feel about glass doors- they give me the heebie jeebies.
There's a large rounded sofa that's built-in and next to it is a wood burning stove. It's not a very big living room, but it's a cozy sitting area.
To the left of the living room there's more seating and built-in sculpted tables made to look like trees. Two more stairs come up to the dining area and kitchen. Look at the bar in the curved blue shelving on the right.
The kitchen is colorful and cute. Look at the wall of storage. Are you seeing what I mean about a good cleaning? I think that's grease on the ceiling.
There is also a half bathroom with a bit of a dizzying array of mirrors and mosaics on the walls. The blue sink vanity is also interesting.
Coming in this back door, there's a foyer set up as a mudroom.
A full bath on the main floor has an industrial kitchen drainboard sink, a shower, and a tub. The tub has a great window for watching the kids or chatting with the neighbors. And, there's also a pantry or storage area behind this room.
Whimsical stairs with artsy sculpted railings and just look at that little hobbit door.
The floors look like stained cement and the walls in this large primary bedroom have some bamboo with orange accents.
This spacious bedroom is currently empty.
This bedroom is a nice size and looks like it opens to a terrace.
Wonderfully colorful bath.
The stairs to the 2nd level and bedrooms actually lead to the pool room first. Look at all the trees and that window on the right.
The pool room has steps to a fun loft.
Look at how cute the loft is.
Looking down.
You can get to the loft this way, too.
And, here is a wonderful art studio.
A patio with a fire pit.
The mountain scenery is just stunning.
And, here's another patio on the other side.
Looking out over the beautiful acreage from the terrace.
Colorful barn with a silly moose head above the entrance.
The road to the property.

- standard tou applies; don’t re-upload, don’t claim as your own, be normal please etc etc
- the landscaping may not look exactly like the photos when placed because i used TOOL to put more trees around the perimeter of the lot
cc list;
brownstone windows // university windows expanded // oak house bathroom // winter garden doors // drainboard sink // london kitchen // london doors // brick foundation // art deco lights // alter eco set // brick accents // cottage garden deco // paris doors // strangerville expanded // berlin (for outlets omg, very very optional) // witching hour decor // functional radiators

I was going through my old gdocs from previous fandoms and found this little domestic Sterek I never had a chance to expand on. Thought I’d share it here for you. Enjoy 💚
Rainy summer day, everything a deep vibrant green outside, obscured by the steam of the rain hitting the hot earth. The front porch is painted a pale mint green, is damp from the hard downpour that's finally settled into a steady soaking rain, thunder rumbles through the valley, a comfortable sort of sound as it echoes alongside the calls of the birds trying to stay dry in the rain. Derek is in the kitchen, windows open to let in the ozone smell of the storm, to let the sound of the rain fill the room, the house. the kitchen is a big farm kitchen, large porcelain coated iron sink with drainboards on either side, a dish rack on one, filled with drying dishes from their lunch that day, a basket of fruit setting out on the other. Derek is standing at the sink, cleaning and destemming strawberries for an afternoon treat for Stiles, who's been studying for his summer class in the office. The whole house, the world they're inhabiting has a definite sense of domesticity, of coziness. Like they've worked hard to get where they are and they don't want to turn back from it. Derek looks comfortable and happy like he's never looked before. He's wearing softer clothes, his hair a little longer, spends more time barefoot around the house. Most days Derek can be heard singing along to foreign songs as he works around the house, the other languages rolling off his tongue as easily as English. Even now Stiles is impressed.

Happy Birthday Remus
A/N- So I found out last night that it was Lupin’s birthday today (3/10) and that prompted me to bang this out at about 11 pm last night. Kind of a weird post after nothing for a month and kind of a shit post, but here it is, enjoy!
Summary- Remus wanted to forget that it was his birthday, but you and the Marauders had other ideas.
TW- mentions of food, and slight mentions of alcohol/cursing and self-confidence issues.
WC- about 2K
____
“Y/n? I got the butter and the sugar, but I don’t know why we need it because I thought we got take-away.”
Remus’ eyes widened at the sight of his friends and family in your small home and he dropped the reusable canvas bag you insisted on using as he closed the door behind him. You stood in the front of everyone else with a slightly nervous smile.
“Surprise! Happy birthday Remus!” everyone shouted.
“We all wanted to celebrate together,” you said.
“Yeah mate, Y/n told us that you were going to do boring old take-away alone for your big 24, and me and ol’ Prongsie here thought, ‘Well that’s just unacceptable, Moony will not be letting his birthday pass quietly,’” Sirius said, giving Remus a glass of something that smelled far too strongly of liquor.
“So, we helped Y/n get you out of the house, and with the help of this bad boy,” James added, swinging his wand around, “we got the place in tip-top shape,” he finished, taking a swig from his own glass.
“I hope you don’t mind, they really wanted to celebrate with you,” You rushed to explain, “and I know that you wanted to keep it small this year but-”
“Thank you, y/n,” Remus cut you off, gently placing his hand in yours with a smile.
“Hey now, don’t forget about the rest of us mate,” James cut in with an indignant huff. Lily quickly swatted his head. “Oi Evans!” he complained, rubbing the back of his head. She responded with a shake of her head and a small, exasperated smile.
“Although there isn’t anything special about 24, I appreciate you doing this for me,” Remus said.
“Happy birthday Remus. Fair warning, they went a little overboard, you know how Sirius is with balloons,” Lily whispered, engulfing him in a hug.
You smiled and led Remus past your entryway into the living room. His eyes widened at the sight he was presented with.
Forest-green balloons with streamers trailing from them littered the ceiling, with bunches at every doorway and window. There were large bunches of flowers and greenery on the tables and most of the flat surfaces in your home. Light shone from the fire in the fireplace and the strings of lights draped around the room. It made your home look enchanting, like a scene from a fairy-tale. Soft music flowed from seemingly everywhere as his eyes took in the scene around him.
“Wow.”
“Right? Let me tell you those balloons, man. Every single one of them, Y/n showed me how to do it without the charm and I must say, it’s much better the muggle way, and your girl has got a pair of lungs mate,” Sirius said, nudging Remus.
You grinned in response. “Oh please, it wasn’t that bad, Sirius just doesn’t want to admit that he almost fainted 10 minutes into blowing them up”.
Sirius looked at you aghast. “How dare you, I told you that I was having allergies.”
James chuckled. “Sure, just keep telling yourself that mate.”
Everyone laughed and James and Lily started passing out glasses to the others as people started chatting and catching up among themselves.
Life had been hectic, and it’d been too long since everyone had gotten together. Soon the space was filled with voices and laughter as people conversed.
People came up to him with birthday wishes which he accepted graciously. Remus slid one hand around your waist and held you to his side, and his glass in the other. On your hip, he drew soothing circles as you mingled. You leaned into him as you talked with Alice, and him with Frank.
The table was full of various dishes that people brought. You hadn’t wanted Remus to feel awkward opening gifts, so instead you had opted for a potluck style; instead of gifts, people brought food. The mouth-watering smells from the table had you and Remus eagerly filling your plates, complimenting those that brought the delicious food.
“Ugh, I need to get that recipe from Alice, these are to die for,” you said, as you took a bite of roast potatoes with a hum of satisfaction.
Remus agreed, nodding with his mouth full of garlic bread. You couldn’t resist giving him a kiss on the cheek. He looked at you, swallowed and smiled. He started to say, “Y/n, I” when he got interrupted, or rather, distracted by something. You turned to see what caused Remus to stop mid-sentence and couldn’t help bursting out laughing. Sirius and James were half-dancing in the living room. Arms flailing and legs awkwardly bending, James looked like a drowning bird. Sirius jumped around, strangely on-beat with him.
“Oh god, I hope Lily sees this,” you said, laughing and tears running down your face.
Remus roared with laughter, half at their antics and half at your response. “Oh, I don’t think she’ll let either of them forget it for a long time,” he said with a shit-eating grin.
You eventually composed yourselves enough to finish your food and you took both of your plates to the sink to clean later. When you returned, Sirius and James were attempting to force Remus to dance with them.
He looked at them with uncertainty, then downing the rest of his drink, stood to follow them, but not before stepping back to peck your forehead.
“Go, I’m excited to see you dance Rem,” you said with a twinkle in your eye.
He followed James and Sirius to the makeshift dance floor, joining the small group gathered, and you watched fondly from your seat, sipping your drink.
Eventually, Lily and Marlene took you to the kitchen to prepare Remus’ last surprise.
Returning to your previously-occupied seat, Remus glanced around, wondering where you had disappeared to. He took a sip from a fresh drink and looked around for you, coming up empty-handed.
Suddenly, James and Sirius appeared around him again.
Sirius loudly banged the side of his glass with a spoon. “Attention everyone!” he shouted. “We just wanted to thank everyone for coming to Remus’ party and for all your contributions and we wanted everyone to personally help wish him happy birthday with-”
You and Lily came out balancing a massive chocolate cake, with ‘Happy Birthday Remus’ written on it in and 24, tiny, green birthday candles on the top.
James began slowly singing, “Happy birthday to you…”
Everyone joined in. “Happy birthday to you!”
“Happy birthday dear Remus.” He saw you sing softly, with a smile and furrowed brow on your face as you concentrate on moving the cake to the table.
“Happy birthday to you.” The song finishes with you and Lily placing the cake in front of him.
He thought for a second, what could he possibly wish for when everything he needed was standing in front of him, waiting with anticipation for him to blow out his rapidly-melting candles.
I wish that I can remember this, this moment, this family, and this feeling for the rest of my life, he thought to himself. He quickly blew out the candles and everyone cheered.
The cake was cut and passed around and there was a lull in conversation as people grabbed their cake and settled down.
“Y/n you made this?” James asked once everyone was seated on the floor with a piece of cake.
You chuckled at his incredulous look. “Yup, that was me, I can’t cook, but I have perfected this cake and that’s about it.”
Remus sighed in content. “You haven’t made this cake in so long I almost forgot how good it was”.
Gasping, you set your cake down dramatically. “Oh no, that’s a sign of a serious problem here. You’re already forgetting things,” you finished with a playful roll of your eyes.
Everyone laughed at your exchange, and Remus pulled you closer to him. There was a smudge of chocolate icing on the corner of his soft, pink lips and you couldn’t resist kissing the chocolate off.
“My eyes! At least wait until the party is over!” Sirius exclaimed, laughing as you flipped him off in response.
The rest of the night was spent talking, laughing, and enjoying the company of your friends.
At the end of the night, everyone else had left and James, Lily, and Sirius were just finishing saying their goodbyes, putting their coats on, and giving both of you one last tight hug. They ducked out and smiled as the door swung closed behind them.
You and Remus stood in the front hall with his arms wrapped around you as you stayed still in the after-party quiet. At some point, the music had changed to smooth jazz which now enveloped you as you embraced. Neither of you spoke; there was no need to.
Minutes, hours, later you reluctantly pulled away from him to begin cleaning up from the party. You cleared discarded plates and glasses, stacking them and with a wave of your wand as they began to wash themselves and organize neatly on the drainboard. Remus joined you and you worked in comfortable silence. There actually wasn’t much to do because Lily had insisted on doing most of towards the end of the night.
“Lily put that trash bag away, it can wait until later.”
“Y/n, I’m just going to do a quick sweep and pick up some of the rubbish for the bin.”
“I see that, and I told you to put it down. I’ll do it after the party, come on, lets go join the boys.”
She reluctantly put the bag away but waved her wand on the way out for the leftovers to tidy themselves and settle in the fridge.
Shortly after, you and Remus settled on the couch together, watching the dying fire. You cuddled into his side.
He tilted your head up to look at you. His gaze was adoring and soft.
“Thank you, Y/n, for this,” he murmured. “It wasn’t what I was expecting but I am so grateful that you did it.”
You smiled at him softly. “Of course, Rem - I hope you liked it. I know that you don’t like celebrating your birthday but-” You take a deep breath. “You deserve this and so much more. You deserve to enjoy and look forward to your birthday and celebrate with your friends, with me.”
You paused for a moment, just taking him in. The slight scars across the nose dusted with freckles. His piercing eyes that could never decide on one color to be. “I love you so much Rem, and I can’t wait for more birthdays and Christmas’ and everything in between with you,” you continued earnestly, eyes full of hope and love.
He looked at you with tears shining in his eyes. “I love you too y/n. You have given me more than I think I deserve.”
“I-”
“Please let me finish,” he said, cutting your protest short. He paused before saying, “Because of you, I have learned how to love and that I am worthy of your love, or any love. I don’t promise that I’ll believe it every day, but you make me want to try. You make me want to try and be more than what I think of myself on the full moon and you make me want to believe that I am more.” He took a deep breath and looked at you wearily, as if he were worried about how you would respond.
You didn’t want him to worry. There was nothing for him to worry about. Instead of responding, you wrapped your arms around his waist and crushed him to you, forcing the love that you felt into him without words. He returned the embrace just as tight, willing the same thing.
It truly was a happy birthday, Remus thought to himself.

Bad Company (Part Two)
Pairing: Bucky x Reader
Story Warnings: Fluff, Slow Burn, Humour, Reader’s a total dumbass and I love her, Eventual 18+
Word Count: 962
Summary: You work for SHIELD, but because of the pandemic you’re working from home. Unfortunately, you haven’t really been able to keep up with the housework with all the stress from isolation. Bucky offers to help.
Part One / Master List
By the time you got a load of laundry started in the coin-operated washer downstairs, Bucky had nearly run out of space in the drainboard.
“I’ll dry,” you offered, holding up a dish towel. “You’re gonna have to scoot over, though.”
He was tall – not to mention so thick and brawny and so stupidly attractive, you could hardly believe he was standing in your kitchen. Unfortunately, that also meant there wasn’t much room near the sink for you.
It took Bucky a second to realize what you meant, but then it seemed to register: he was way too big for this small kitchen. You somehow got the feeling that this sort of thing happened relatively often.
“Oh, yeah. Sure.”
A shuffle to the left gave you just enough room to squeeze in and get to work. You found yourself sneaking glances at him – not at his face, now, but at his hands, flesh and metal and covered in bubbles. He’d rolled up the sleeves of his henley to prevent them from getting wet, too, but now his forearms were on full display: one strong and muscular, the other shiny vibranium.
You may have spoken with him a couple of times in the past, mostly in passing, but you’d never gotten a good and proper look at the intricate detailing that went into his arm. The metal plates moved smoothly, surprisingly so, as did the joints; and up close like this, you could hear a faint whirring sound coming from inside.
“Does it bother you?” came the soft timbre of his voice, to which your eyes jerked up to meet his.
Beautiful, albeit guarded blue. Hesitant. Unsure.
“No, it—” you started to say, before you stopped in the middle of drying a plate, brows furrowing. “What? Why would it bother me?”
“You were staring. I just assumed—”
Shit.
“Sorry, it’s just… it’s pretty.” Honest words punctuated with a frown. “Does seeing your arm really bother people?”
Now Bucky was the one staring, tracing the features of your face like he was trying to piece together a puzzle, and you suddenly felt self-conscious for what you just said. You sounded like an idiot. Telling him his arm was pretty? What the hell? You knew had better vocabulary than that.
Then, after a pause, he went back to work on the soapy dishes in front of him.
“Yeah,” he admitted. “People know who I am, but sometimes it doesn’t really sink in until they see it. Or this.” Vibranium fingers appeared out of the water, covered in suds, and he flicked them away – just slightly too hard, and you assumed it was on purpose when one large drop of water nearly knocked over your soap bottle.
You swallowed thickly. Seeing a hint of his enhanced strength so up close and personal was a major turn-on. What the hell?
So you huffed, drying the plate a little more aggravatedly. “Well, that’s stupid.”
His brows rose, before he cast a curious sidelong glance in your direction.
“As if what you went through was a choice,” you prattled on, talking about things that were absolutely not your place because it pissed you off that people would treat him that way. “The people who don’t understand that are assholes. Ignore them.”
Bucky Barnes had been a prisoner of war for decades, and people still wanted to judge him after that became public information? Make him feel ‘less than’? You didn’t know all the details, of course, but you knew enough from the news articles covering his trial on Capitol Hill. Not to mention the rumour mill at the Tower; agents who had been lucky enough to go on a mission with an Avenger loved to share their stories.
You stacked the plate in the cabinet slightly harder than necessary, and when you went to grab another from the drainboard, he held the one he’d just finished washing out to you.
“Everyone handles fear differently,” he told you.
“Like you could be scary,” you muttered under your breath before you could stop yourself – and then you immediately froze, horrified. What was wrong with you? So you half-snatched the plate from him and added a little too haughtily, “Don’t let people treat you like that. You’re too nice.”
Because that was much better, giving unsolicited advice and a lecture to a hundred-something-year-old man who had more life experience than three of you combined.
He snorted, the amusement plain as day in his voice, “Is that right?”
And now your face felt hot all of a sudden, because you were very clearly making a fool of yourself. “Sorry.”
“Don’t be.”
Another plate in the cabinet, and he gave you one more—
“Can I bring you your files next week too?”
What? He actually wanted to see you again?
“Depends,” you began, all casual nonchalance, a contrast to your racing thoughts, “Can you handle more of my bullshit advice next week?”
“If it’s from you, sure,” he said with a laugh. “Been a long time since I’ve seen a dame get so worked up because of me. Thank you.”
At that, your cheeks flushed even more. He called you right out, didn’t he? Called you a dame, and hearing the slight Brooklyn drawl that came along with that old slang made you want to swoon.
Instead, you mumbled in embarrassment, “Sorry.”
Another apology, because what else were you supposed to say?
There was a brief pause, and then—
“Maybe you’re the one who’s too nice,” he suggested.
It was a playful jab, but the implication was there: it’s okay.
When you finally chanced another look at him, you found that those stunning blue eyes of his looked clearer, now, less guarded. And when they met yours, your heart skipped a beat.

my brain is still doing the thing where you’re somewhere new and it’s like oH!!! TIME TO NOTICE!!! NOTICE ALL THE THINGS!!!!! so here’s my account of the little details while they’re still fresh and I’m still aware of them
also I should note, I rented this apartment teeeeechnically sight unseen. I was not expecting to move for a few months, but then coronavirus happened and I needed to get away from my roommate ASAP. but because of everything going on, I couldn’t tour the place in person. the realtor arranged for the tenant to take me on a video tour, so I still got to see something more authentic/trustworthy than just photos, but still. it’s different finally getting to SEE a place
around here, a majority of the apartment buildings are from the 20s. I’ve gone from a building built in 1920 to one built in 1925
so I still have a lot of those “old building” details that I love and that I had in the last place—that exact same molding that every 20s building seems to have around doorways, old doorknobs and interesting doorknob plates, tile lobbies with marble stairs (old, worn, and cracking, but definitely original and definitely cool)
however, the kitchen and bathroom in my last place had DEEEEFNITELY been redone more recently. I’m going to guess the kitchen and bathroom in this place hasn’t seen a significant renovation since the 50s, based on nothing but “it reminds me of my grandma’s house which was built in 1950 and never renovated. and also I googled 50s kitchen/bathroom sink and yep those are my sinks”
the kitchen cabinets are metal, which is fascinating and also feels very mid-century. the counter beside the kitchen sink has drainboard grooves imbedded in it (I haven’t used the oven yet, but fortunately that’s newer. some vintage things are cool, but you don’t want an oven the same age as your parents)
the windows are wood. you can see the chain in the window frame for the pulley system. I thought this would be a pain, but honestly they’re way easier to open and close than modern windows
the bathroom floor has that octagonal tile, and the walls are tiled up to the chair rail. the tub is encased in a sort of box, which is also tiled. the faucet is along the side of the tub, not at the front. (I haven’t tried to take a bath yet, but it seems somewhat deeper than a normal tub, and my lanky 5′10″ self is hype)
the bathroom sink is absolutely the same sink as my grandma’s bathroom. porcelain, jutting out of the wall, no cabinetry beneath it. separate faucets for hot and cold. that’s a little inconvenient for finding a good temperature to wash your hands, but right now the nostalgia factor is winning out over the practicality
there’s a thingy on the wall by the front door that’s mostly been painted over, but I’m pretty positive it’s the original doorbell mechanism? it’s fascinating.
THERE’S A WINDOW IN MY CLOSET???? WHICH IS ACTUALLY QUITE LARGE???? (there’s only one closet and I was not shown it on the video tour, so I was assuming I’d have minimal closet space. it’s actually really big and it has?? a window????)
in the wall by the bathroom, there’s a built-in linen cupboard and built-in drawers, which is adorable and I’m obsessed with it
this has nothing to do with the building being old, but I love the placement of this particular unit. I’m on the top floor (rip me with groceries) but on the plus side, it means I get a ton of light. I face the back of the building, so instead of being along a busy street, I overlook a grassy patch behind the building
THE AFOREMENTIONED BED NOOK!! WHICH IS A NOOK, FOR MY BED!!!! it’s this little triangular alcove off the main room and my bed fits into it perfectly, and it’s really nice because a) sleeping in a bed nook is SUPER COZY, but b) even though I’m in a studio, it still feels like I have a separate “living space” vs. “sleeping space”
the radiators are actually hidden by these nice wooden boxes, which is nice and nostalgic for me, because the house I grew up in had encased radiators like that
I just really love old details on buildings? The house I grew up in was built in 1888 (granted, WAY MORE MODERNIZED than any of the 1920s apartments I’ve lived in) and there’s something about those historical details that just really makes me feel homey
yes, there’s some drawbacks to living in a place that hasn’t been recently redone. the sinks and tub are far from sparklingly clean because they’re old, I’m going to miss having a dishwasher and a garbage disposal, there’s wear and there’s cracks, radiators clank and bang and are hard to regulate. but god there’s also so much CHARM.

She's a beautiful 1900 Victorian in Fall River, KS, but she needs a little work (The front porch is being held up by cinder blocks). However, at only $125K, the work can be done over time while you live in the 3bd, 2ba beauty.
The outside is beautifully painted, so you have a gorgeous home right away. Look at the wonderful lemonade porch.
Enter a huge hall with an original staircase, new tin ceiling and fireplace.
Look at the cute corner fireplace in the reception room. Looks like the cabinet is a built-in.
Large sitting room with fireplace. This home can be gorgeous, just by making the walls more lively.
Huge dining room. You can have a banquet in here. Nice stained glass window and I like the old brick chimney in the corner. The ceilings look like they've been covered with painted plywood, so they need redoing, but the floors are new.
My favorite. The perfect vintage kitchen. Love it so much. The original drainboard sink is here. The cabinetry is perfection.
Original Victorian service stairs and a vintage fridge.
Check out that stove and the exhaust hood. I wonder if they would leave the Hoosier cabinet.
Vintage bath off the kitchen.
The laundry room was likely the pantry. (Note that the real fridge is in here.)
Big, bright, upstairs landing. The French heat stove is wonderful.
Upstairs is a spacious principal bedroom with lots of windows.
They've been working on this bedroom. Looks like they sanded the floor and put up drywall.
They're prepping the plaster walls in this room.
Beautiful 2nd fl. terrace.
The back porch can be fabulous, all fixed up.
The furnace looks new, what's all the ash, though, it doesn't run on coal does it? They don't mention the heat in the descr.
Oh, the roof is new.
Closeup of the paint details.
What a great yard- love the tire swing.
1 acre lot.

Title: Wanderer
WC: 1100
Paris could solve all their problems. Well. Maybe not all of them, but their immediate problems, anyway. He could take her to Paris, well out of harm’s way, until Jordan Shaw and her Traveling Toy Emporium apprehend their friend with the .45, a pen knife, and too much time on his hands.
It’s the sign in her kitchen, the one with the arrow pointing left, that sparks his sudden meditation on the City of Light, but it really only gives him a destination. She is what sparks the desire in him to offer—to legitimately, in his outside-his-head-voice offer, even though she will glare so hard—to get her out of Dodge for the foreseeable future.
She’s unbelievable. Not in a good way, currently. She’s got a stubborn glint in her eye, and he’s alarmed at how cavalier she’s being about all this—sending her security detail home, opening the door to strange men bearing wine, picking petty fights about the woman leading the team that currently represents their best shot at catching this guy.
She’s not exactly governed by her better impulses tonight, and under other circumstances, he’d find that . . . intriguing, promising, rife with potential. In Paris, he’d find that positively delightful, but Paris is off the table. She’s annoyed enough by the wine, by the entire subject of Jordan Shaw, by his very presence that he never does get to offer. He never gets to see if he’d survive The Glare.
But he sees that worrisome, stubborn glint in her eye and decides that if he can’t take her to Paris, he’ll damned well make sure her dangerous impulses don’t go sneaking out after curfew. Not without him, anyway.
So he stands his ground when she tries to kick him out. He shoulders the blame for the danger she’s in and doesn’t rise to the bait when she points out that he is, at best, de trop when it comes to providing personal security services. He settles back on to her couch with two generous pours of wine, then rapidly unsettles. He thinks better of the wine and his relatively comfortable position.
She is . . . determined. And she’s preternaturally stealthy for the most trivial of reasons, like startling a girly score out of him in full view of everyone in the bullpen. She’s more than capable of sneaking past him, should that remarkable, stubborn brain of hers produce some idea that she thinks will lead her right to the killer without his help, without Jordan Shaw’s help, without anyone’s help.
“This is a tragedy,” he tells the wine, sadly. He takes one long, regretful breath, inhaling its bouquet one last time as he gets to his feet and heads for the kitchen sink. He stalls for a moment, shoving the cork back into the remainder of the bottle before he tips the glass over the stainless steel and watches the blood-dark liquid swirl down the drain. He lifts his eyes to Paris again and sighs. “You really could have been the answer.”
He doesn’t let himself go back to the couch. He’s long since started feeling the strain of the day and he can’t risk nodding off. He slowly walks the perimeter of the apartment instead. He snoops, not to put too fine a point on it, though the apartment itself—the contours of it—have plenty to capture his attention before he dives into the signs of her occupation of it.
He ducks his head where the ceiling slants lowest and runs a finger along the row of book spines on the shelf above the lunette window. He studies the eclectic mix of furniture—slender-legged nesting tables that seem too old fashioned for her, and arm chairs of wildly different styles, all scattered to the four corners of the room.
He wonders where it all came from, the rustic painted-wood desk by the door and the curious white-leather ottoman that doubles as a coffee table. He wonders if it’s mostly hand-me-downs that she lives with because she has been absolutely laser-focused on her career since she was barely out of her teens, or if they’re things that just caught her eye as she wandered in and out of dimly lit vintage stores.
He casts a glance back over his shoulder at her kitchen table with its seating for four and thinks about the dust on all but one wine class, all but one coffee cup, all but one plate sitting on the drainboard by the sink, and the fact that she was eating out of a carton with throw-away chopsticks when he arrived.
There’s too much melancholy in contemplating all that, so he turns his attention to her books. They’re positively everywhere. They’re stacked in haphazard piles on tables and snugged into the painted-desk cubbies, every which way to make the most of the available space. They’re lined up in short rows on bracket shelves and they fill actual bookcases opportunistically filling in the gaps along the walls.
It all has a well-used feeling that makes him smile. These aren’t books that sit there for show, slid off and back on again once a week when she dusts. There’s no obvious rhyme or reason to what he finds where, suggesting that she returns to them again and again—that she has several going at once and she tucks them away wherever there’s space when she tidies up.
The one exception is the stretch of travel books. It’s a well-established theme that occupies a long, low bookcase of its own. They’re new, they’re old. At a glance, they seem to cover the entire globe. He offers up another sigh for Paris.
He sizes up the spines and pulls the thickest one without regard for its destination. China, he reads, and he notes that it’s an older one. He riffles the pages and sees dog ears and marginalia in handwriting that isn’t hers. He settles into striped armchair with it. The back of the chair runs straight up and down and the cushion has seen better days. It’s uncomfortable, and that suits his purpose exactly.
The hefty travel guide is his back-up plan. If he does start to nod off in the diabolical chair, he can count on China to mash his toe—or some far more vulnerable part of his anatomy. They might not always have Paris. They might never have Paris, although that sounds stupid to him. It sounds unbelievable. But in any case, they have China tonight. China and an uncomfortable chair.
A/N: He stayed up all night reading a China travel guide, friends. It is known. Hmmm.

Scent-imental
It’s a rainy day in Portland, after 3 spectacularly sunny ones that drew us outside to play as much as we could. Autumn has been twirling her skirts between frosty mornings and warm windy afternoons. The sun is setting earlier than we are ready for. But there are compensations. The neighbours have been by to make introductions and we have been gifted with tomatoes, homemade chili sauce and the lightest pumpkin loaf I have ever eaten. Our house smells amazing at the moment; there’s antipasto in the making. Applecrisp and sweet potato brownies are also on the agenda. My Beloved and I stood comfortably side by side this morning, with two cutting boards and good knives rendering heaps of vegetables into a huge bowl of colourful confetti. A little oil and seasoning and into the oven they went to roast before hitting the stew pot with fresh tomatoes and basil. There’s a Motown soundtrack to sway to. The distinctive sharp pop of confirmed vacuum seals has it’s own rhythm. It all becomes a dance, steps inherited and invented as we go.
Everybody cooks something that makes their house smell good. But this morning was monumental for us, because we have waited 11 years to have a kitchen big enough to be able to work in together. The house we moved into less than 2 weeks ago is not large, but because the kitchen, living room and dining room are one giant open space, it feels bigger than it is. For reference, when I was a little kid on the farm, the kitchen was the heart of the house and large enough that I could ride my tricycle around the kitchen table with plenty of room to spare. The kitchen we are so thrilled to be creating in now is actually big enough that I could ride circles in it. As an adult. Really. Don’t try to picture it, (nobody needs that vision) just trust me. We are thrilled. We have supper guests already and being able to stay a part of the conversation as we work to get the meal on the table is truly wonderful.
I’ve cooked in a lot of kitchens, commercial ones as well as my own. Nursing homes, all-night pizza joints, coffee shops, commissaries and cafeterias. The work got me through college and university. I have been known to cuss like a stevedore on the rare occasion I have nicked or scorched myself in the course of creation, but that’s the only thing I have in common with Gordon Ramsay. I’ve had some great teachers. Including shortbread lessons that only a Grandma can give. (” You’re worrying that dough too much!”) I’m at best a competent cook, can’t make pastry to save my life, but there is something so incredibly sumptuous about fresh ingredients, decent equipment, space to work and excellent company with whom to share it . Even if the sauce spills and a pot boils over now and then; cooking is therapeutic. Can you think of a more comforting smell than warm nutmeg?
I’ve written before about the conversations around my Grandmother’s kitchen table, she and my Mum and Aunts in the full throes of “remember-whens” not always entirely fit for eager little eavesdroppers. There was as much spice in the stories as the soup. They’d be peeling apples or potatoes, guiding tomatoes through the hand grinder that vise-clamped onto the edge of the arborite table covered in an oilcloth with endless stories of it’s own. A steam kettle whistled for attention as something from the oven, sausage rolls maybe, cooled on the windowsill. If it was too hot, we removed to the porch to snap beans or shell peas pinging them merrily into a tin bowl, routinely swatted for eating as many as we thought we could sneak. Hulling berries meant stained knees as we had to pick twice as many as we actually needed for pies and jam and otherwise “putting up”. Few had the luxury of a deep chest freezer, so it all went into the jars.
The root cellar scared me just a little. We had no freezer so the rainbow of heavy glass spent the Winter waiting on wooden shelves in what was essentially a dugout beneath the kitchen. Spiced pears squashed against the rounded shoulders of the jars like trapped grotesque faces. Pickle spears looked like piano-key teeth on edge. Beets appeared to bathe in blood. A single low-wattage swinging light bulb cast eerie shadows, totally responsible for my imagination turning such lovely work into nightmares. If I was sent down for pickles or peaches, I didn’t linger; the smell of the very Earth itself, breathing back at me as I raced back up the creaky wooden steps sent shivers up my spine. I didn’t want to think about what else might be waiting down there.
My Beloved just asked me if I wanted to open a door and shatter a canning jar for old times’ sake. She refers to the days of my poor Mum canning and pickling everything in sight at harvest time, over a giant cast iron sink and drainboard; we kids were firmly reminded to use the front door for those hot and steamy hours, but I would routinely forget and coming swinging through the back door, right into the kitchen next to where the freshly-scalded jars were draining. All it took was one cool October breeze at the wrong moment. Suffice it to say I did a fair amount of time sweeping up glass and hearing a terse explanation about how“dear”(expensive) jars were. I am slightly better behaved as an adult, but then again some of the jars we use now are the very ones both Grandma and Mum used, with glass lids and rubber sealers. They are dear in an entirely different way.Sealing wax only got used when they ran out of mason jars and Cheese Whiz jars carefully scrubbed could do in a pinch, but nothing beats those heavy jars stamped 1939.
I can recall late-night conversations with my Mum on Christmas Eve as we tore bread loaves into chunks so they could get stale on the counter overnight to be ready for turkey dressing. More recently, there were early morning conversations about the state of the World at a bakery owned by friends, against a backdrop of classical music and the scent of cinnamon rolls rising, rum-soused loaves of dark Christmas cake, and my first experience of sugar plums. Those scents will become prevalent again in no time, but this is October, for soups and stews and roasted vegetables that next year will come from our own gardens. By then we will have been seasoned by our new home, know all the names of the horses across the road, and be able to smell the rain before it arrives. We’ll have our own stock of preserves on pantry shelves, generously generation-spiked with loving and laughing voices of the memories they perpetuate.

Housemates - 1
I’m going to be running a promotion about these guys on Patreon and if nothing else, go check out the inspiration board that goes with this chapter. If I try to post it, Tumblr doesn’t let my post go up. This is the current $1+ novel, it releases one new chapter a week, but I have two other novels running just now too.
WANTED:
Housekeeper wanted for a species diverse household. Duties include planning, shopping for, preparing and cleaning up after the evening meal as well as light housekeeping in common areas only. Payment includes: room and board and as a small salary. Perfect for a student attending Local University. Campus is just a short walk out the front door and across Hyde Park. Residents would provide a security escort to and from evening classes, if required. Contact Bazur at 555-2972 for more information.
“How are you going to get this past your mom?” Jenn demanded.
Vinny sighed, put down her coffee and leaned back in her chair. They were in the coffee shop in the student union building. It was nice. Its was summer, so the fireplace wasn’t running, but the coffee was better than at the Starbucks across the street. She stared at the vaulted ceiling and carded her fingers through her long, chestnut brown hair. Then she sat up, put on her professional face and said, “It’s simple logistics. Chem 403 requires a night lab. It runs from 7:30 until 10:30. While the busses as still technically running, it is down to slow service so-”
“It’s going to take you two hours to get home.” Jenn finished.
Vinny nodded, “I can’t even get on the bus until almost eleven. Plus I have a transfer in a bad part of downtown at 11:30 where I have to wait twenty minutes for the next bus to come. Then I don’t get home until 1:00am and I have to be back at The U for Math 476 at 8am. I can’t afford a car. Hell, I can’t afford school if I lose my scholarship. I certainly can’t afford to get a place closer to campus. This is perfect.”
“Depending on how much house work there is.” Jenn pointed out. “Some people are total slobs.”
Vinny nodded. “But I won’t know that until I go for an interview and find out.”
“Assuming you get an interview.” Jenn looked hard at her friend. “You already applied, didn’t you?”
Vinny gave a head wiggle/shoulder shrug and grinned a tight lipped smile.
Jenn pushed her glasses further up her freckle covered nose as grinned back. “Have you told your mom?”
Vinny’s smile faded. “There isn’t any point. If I don’t get the job or the house is a disaster, or if the people are creepy, then I just don’t say anything and we… try to come up with a different plan. Fall term doesn’t start for two months, so if it doesn’t work out, I have a little time.”
Jenn nodded, slowly. “That’s fair. But what happens if you turn up for your interview and it’s a pack of werewolves and they eat you?”
Vinny gasped, “Jenn that is so speciesist!”
Jenn shook her head, “OK, then, what if you turn up and it’s a bunch of human men who are rapists and ax murderers? The point is, how are you going to be safe?”
Vinny’s grin turned conspiratorial, “You could come with me to the interview. That way you would know where I was and could call the cops if I’m not out in twenty minutes. Or if you hear screaming.”
Jenn narrowed her eyes. “When is the interview?”
Vinny looked at the clock, “In about an hour. But it is just across the park so we have time to finish our coffees.”
“Vinny!”
“Look, I already walked past the place. It’s one of those big houses on University boulevard. The really pricey one’s facing the park. The is even a park bench basically right across the street from it. “I’ll buy you a fritter and a tea to go and you can hang out and snapchat how you are a good friend while I have my interview. It’ll be fine.”
“Ugh. Fine.”
—-
It was an imposing three story, red brick manor. It was across the street from the park, which meant it must have million dollar views. Plus the university area was pricier to start with. The whole building was intimidating.
Jenn whistled, “Well, you know whoever lives there can afford to hire a maid.”
Vinny nodded. She took a deep breath. “Wish me luck!” she said, before striding confidently across the street and ringing the doorbell.
The man who answered the door was somewhere over six feet tall. The way he filler out his jeans and t-shirt suggested he had a serious gym habit. He was also a gargoyle. His skin was a light cement grey and he was taking the phrase chiselled features to a whole new level.
Vinny blinked, but recovered quickly, “Are you Mr Bazur? I’m Vinny. I’m here for my interview.” She held out her hand.
He hesitated, then carefully shook it. His skin was more leathery than Vinny was expecting. She also knew that gargoyles, by preference don’t wear clothing. There was no need. Their hide was impervious to the elements. He was dressed for her comfort, not his. That was something to think about.
“Come in. I’ll show you around first, then if you have any questions, we can go from there.”
Vinny nodded and stepped into an entryway that was like something out of an old Hollywood movie. There was patterned carpet, a good sized foyer with a circle table, then a grand wooden staircase leading up towards a landing with a big bay window. There was wainscotting. There was decorative pillars. None of it was new, it looked like a well cared for antique. The took the doorway to the right. “This is the dining room. We actually eat here. There are six of us, you would be number seven.”
To the left of that was a set of pocket doors that opened to a pantry with a sink that they walked through to the kitchen. It was, old but clean. There was a gas range and a farmhouse sink with a built in porcelain drainboard. “The job includes planning and cooking supper. We are on our own for other meals.”
“Any special diets?”
Baruz froze. “Tristan is a vegetarian, Derick is … not. They are both raw foodies, so they will give you a list when you are grocery shopping. Other than that, they will take care of themselves. As for the rest of us, you cook, we will eat.”
“Tell me about Tristan and Derick.”
Bazur sighed. “Tristan is a minotaur, Derick is a werewolf.”
Vinny nodded slowly. “Are there any humans in this house at all?”
“You would be the first.”
“Oh.” She thought about that. “What is the grocery budget like?”
“$1000 a week, which sounds like lots, but we are big eaters.”
“What are you expecting the workload to be like? The ad said it would be a good job for a student, but you are already talking about an hour and a half a day to prepare food, and wash up afterwards.”
“We have a rotation for dishes.”
Vinny frowned. “And does that work? Because I don’t want to be ready to start supper and find out I have to either chase down whoever didn’t clean up or wash them myself before I start the next meal.”
“I am expecting the workload to be about two and a half to three hours a day. If we are more work than that, we will have a meeting and you can share a list of chores that you need us to do. We all do our own laundry. Housekeeping would be cleaning the bathrooms, vacuuming and washing the floors, dusting, and organizing dinner.”
“Ok. Tidying where?”
“The common areas.” Bazur replied. “We are each responsible for our own rooms.”
“And I get a room in the house?”
“You get half the third floor. There is a private bathroom up there. It would be yours exclusively.”
Vinny thought about that. “Let’s see the rest of the house.”
The kitchen opened on to the back entry way, which had a door on each side. The first opened onto a beautiful backyard. “Tristan is in charge of landscaping.”
Heading back inside, Bazur pointed to the opposite door, “That goes to the basement. It isn’t finished. You don’t have to worry about that, but I will show it to you if you want.”
“Maybe next time.”
The last door opened into a TV room. There were three large couches, a HUGE TV and a collections of gaming systems. The coffee table was clean, but there were drink rings.
“How long did it take you to clean before the interview?”
Bazur coughed. “A while. But everyone is responsible for their own mess, you just need to vacuum around it.”
The next room has a fireplace, a set of french doors leading outside, one of which had been modified to include a doggie door. It also had a futon and a dresser. “This is Derick’s room. He’s the only one of us who lives on the main floor. He’s a werewolf.”
“The raw foodie who isn’t the vegetarian?” Vinny suggested. Bazur nodded and kept moving.
The last corner of the house had a library/ music room, complete with a grand piano. “We don’t really use this room, except to walk through to the TV room. You don’t have to worry about it. Want to see upstairs?”
Vinny nodded. As they climbed the stairs, Bazur explained, “You don’t have to do anything with any of the bed rooms, so this floor is just vacuuming the hallways.” He opened the first door to show a room with a bunch of plants, a display case full of trophies, and a mattress of on the floor. “This is Tristan’s room. He was a professional on the rodeo circuit.”
Vinny felt her eyebrows go up. “Wow… um…. Not many people would admit to that.”
Bazur shrugged. “You would find out anyway, if you google his name.”
Vinny wondered how she would explain to her mom that one of the guys was a minotaur retired from the rodeo circuit when that was basically code for bull riding porn.
Bazur continued. “He doesn’t really like to talk about it. He’s a little shy.” Vinny choked at that. “So if you don’t bring it up, he won’t either,” Bazur continued, ignoring Vinny’s faux pas.
“Right! Next room is Dren’s. He’s gelatinous.” Again, no bed, this time it was a clawfoot bathtub that didn’t appear to be connected to anything. There was a wooden chair. Everything was hard surfaces, including the exposed floorboards.
Bazur closed the door and opened the next one. This was even more empty, it looked like something out of a haunted house. There were spiderwebs everywhere. “Thea is a Drider.”
The following room was the most normal looking. No dresser, but a desk and chair. An armchair near the window with a floor lamp for when it was dark. There were a stack of books on a side table next to the chair. And a lovely, antique wooden bed with a patchwork quilt. Bazur looked around, “Oh! Sorry, Kevin. I didn’t know you were home! This is Vinny. She’s interviewing for the housekeeping job.”
Vinny looked around the room and didn’t see anyone. “Um, hi?” There wasn’t any response.
“Sorry, Kevin doesn’t always have the best manners.” Bazur closed the door.
Vinny whispered, “Bogeyman, right? He was under the bed?”
Bazur made a face like he was trying not to laugh. “Mimic. He was the bed.”
“Oh.” Vinny felt like her brain had shorted out and she was running on autopilot. She barely registered the next room being a large bathroom that was probably a converted bedroom. It had a floor drain, a huge tub and a walk in shower.
The last bedroom was on the other side of the staircase from Tristan’s room was also a corner room facing out to the back yard. This one had been decorated in military memorabilia. “This is Kogan’s room. He’s a semi retired Marine. He works for a security firm.”
Vinny nodded, and waited.
Bazur sighed. “He’s an orc.”
Vinny considered all of this. “So… six men living in one building. How much porn had to get taken down/put away before I arrived?”
Two doors down, Kevin burst out laughing. Bazur looked uncomfortable. “Some. But everyone keeps it in their own rooms.”
“Only one bathroom so far. How does that work?”
“Um… there is another one on the main floor that we skipped.”
“That bad?”
“No! Not too messy. It’s just, um, where we hid the porn.”
“Ah.” Vinny was quiet for a moment while she tried to digest all of that. Bazur was looking nervous. “How many people have you interviewed so far?”
“Fifteen.”
“How many left before they saw their room?”
“Ten.”
“What about the other five?”
“One didn’t pass the criminal record check. Two stopped returning my calls, one actually started but was so unpleasant about the level of diversity that we had to let him go.”
Vinny was slightly surprised at the male pronoun there.
“And the other two?”
“One left after the meet and greet due to… Kevin’s lack of manners. One started sexually harassing Tristan.”
Vinny nodded slowing. “You keep talking about Kevin being rude. What did he do to the one he ran off?”
“He was a chair and she sat on him.”
“Oh.”
Vinny’s mind was racing. She wanted to know if that was an ongoing issue in the house. And who was going to be the person who would walk her home from night classes. And what kind of porn was hiding in the downstairs bathroom. Although, maybe she didn’t want to know. And she was completely torn between wanting to go home and google Tristan and never, ever wanting to know that about her prospective employer. She realized she hadn’t said anything in long enough that she was being rude.
“Let’s go see the top floor,” she announced.
The top floor was basically the attic. The room at the front of the house had a balcony. It was the biggest bedroom so far. It had been somewhat divided into zones. There was a bookcase and a desk in an inside corner, the sleeping zone was next to a fireplace and separated from the small area with a weight bench, yoga mat and free weights. It was Bazur’s.
Out of his room and around the corner there was a reasonably sized bathroom that smelled faintly of bleach. “This will be your bathroom if you take the job. It was mine, but I’ll be sharing the main floor one. We all agreed it wasn’t fair to … um, make you share with us.”
The last room was hers. The ceilings were vaulted. There were huge closets under the eves. She had a gas fireplace, and hardwood floors and huge windows looking out over the gardens. There were heavy velvet drapes that ran across the whole wall where the windows were looking like old fashioned theatre curtains. She experimented pulling them closed. They slid easily and completely darkened the room.
Bazur coughed. “Yeah. This room faces east, so the curtains keep you from having light in your eyes at dawn. Also, there is a bit of a draft in the winter. They help with that at night too.” He pointed to the radiator. “Hot water heat comes all the way up to here, and you can use the fireplace if you need extra heat.”
“That is an awful lot of stairs to get furniture up.”
Bazur stopped looking so dejected. “We would all help. It won’t be a problem,” he assured her.
Vinny went over and sat on the window sill. “Assuming you offer me the job, what is the salary?”
“Um… We thought that at max it would be three hours a day, times, thirty days in a month, is 90 hours, approximately. Call it $15 an hour, would be $1350 less room and board would be… oh… $500?”
Vinny swallowed. “Is that a question?”
“It’s nearly double minimum wages,” Bazur said defensively.
Vinny nodded. “My math is - my folks are currently covering room and board. I have a weekend job, that gives me time to study during the week. It doesn’t sound like I will have much time for that with this job. My current take home is a bit more but I would need to take a cab across town to get home from my night twice a week. Plus, whatever you say about the idea that you will eat what I cook, you have three different diets I would need to cater to and the fridge is pretty small. I bet I would need to shop for groceries every second day.”
“Why don’t you come for dinner on Friday? You can meet everyone and we can talk logistics?”
Vinny sighed. “I may be twenty three, but I also still need to convince my Italian Catholic mother that this is a good idea.”
Bazur nodded. “Kogan can take care of that. He’s Catholic, he’s in security so he has the stats on crime rates for women waiting for cabs and buses on campus after dark. He’s… mature enough to put her at ease and promise to drive you to mass every Sunday if she wants.”
Vinny nodded slowly. “I don’t have a problem with Tristan’s last job but-”
“You can honestly say he is a landscaper. Unless your mom was heavy into rodeo three years ago, she won’t know.”
Vinny considered this. “Do you want to just cut to the chase about the salary, or are we going to dance around first?”
“Whatever do you mean?”
Vinny shook her head. “You said $500 like it was a question, which would suggest you are willing to negotiate. It’s close enough to $600 that we could back and forth for a while, but you have six people living here and I would bet that your target price point is everyone chipping in a hundred dollars a month not to have to cook or scrub the toilets.”
Bazur chuckled. “Yeah. So, six hundred a month, if you pass the meeting everyone test and if we all get the nod from meeting your mom?”
“Ok. Just don’t let her sit on Kevin.”
