'Satan Club': Petition launched to stop group at Kansas high school
The district said a student made a request to start the club, but since it’s considered a student record, they couldn’t give details due to privacy laws.
“I would love for them to reject that application,” parent Gregory Austin said. “I don’t think these kids are enemies. I think they’re just looking for belonging and looking for acceptance and looking for love, and if any group has marginalized them for any reason, I think it’s incumbent upon us to try and do a better job of making them feel loved.”
A concerned student started a petition online. It’s called, Stop The Satan Worship Club at Olathe Northwest.
On Monday night, it had 6,800 signatures. Austin is one of them.
“I’m concerned,” Austin said.
His son is a freshman at Olathe Northwest.
“From a more spiritual standpoint because as a Christian because we know that the only job of the devil is to steal, kill and destroy, and I’m not saying these kids have any intention of doing that whatsoever, but the group that they’re with, may be under that influence,” Austin said.
“From a secular perspective, non-religious, there’s well documented evidence, as per the U.S. Dept. of Justice of a direct correlation between violent and criminal behavior of teen who are within that type of activity. So, I’m concerned about the school sponsoring that type of activity.”
To repeat:
“From a secular perspective, non-religious, there’s well documented evidence, as per the U.S. Dept. of Justice of a direct correlation between violent and criminal behavior of teen who are within that type of activity. So, I’m concerned about the school sponsoring that type of activity.”

A fired Olathe Northwest High School teacher and coach facing three felony charges is accused of having sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old student both at his home and at the school multiple times, according to court records.
Last month, Steven Mesa, 47, was arrested and charged in Johnson County District Court with three counts of unlawful sexual relations with a student. Mesa, a physical education teacher and wrestling coach, was fired effective Sept. 1, after working for the Olathe school district since August 2001.
An affidavit unsealed Thursday by a Johnson County District Court judge says that on Aug. 26, the Olathe Police Department was notified about a possible sexual relationship between a teacher and student at Northwest High School. They were identified as Mesa and a 17-year-old Northwest student.
Detectives met with the student, who initially denied having sexual intercourse with Mesa, according to police. But she later alleged, the affidavit says, that toward the end of July, she started to have sexual encounters with Mesa, including intercourse. The student claimed to have sexual intercourse with Mesa several times, including both at his home and at the high school.
Police contacted Mesa, who, the affidavit said, declined to provide a statement.
Attorneys listed for Mesa did not immediately return The Star’s request for comment on Thursday.
Court records show that Mesa posted $100,000 bond and is restricted to house arrest with GPS monitoring, is not allowed to go within 100 yards of the victim’s residence or employment, and is not allowed to contact the victim or witnesses.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 15.
Mesa was a high school teacher for the duration of his employment with the Olathe district, a spokeswoman said, and most recently a head wrestling coach. He also worked as an assistant baseball coach last year.
Olathe school district officials previously said in a statement that, Although we are unable to comment in detail on personnel matters, we can share that our administration was recently made aware of allegations of misconduct by Steve Mesa. Upon learning of these allegations, the district took swift action to place Mesa on leave, refer the matter to local law enforcement, conduct an investigation, and make the recommendation of termination to the Board of Education.”
A spokeswoman said the district, “takes all allegations of staff misconduct very seriously. We will not tolerate anything that impacts the wellbeing or safety of our students or staff. We have processes and procedures in place, including working closely with local law enforcement to investigate and address these situations in accordance with our board policies, state and federal laws. We are committed to ensuring that our students are educated in a safe environment.”
Several teachers in the Kansas City metro area have been accused of sexual misconduct in recent weeks.
A teacher at Center High School accused of inappropriate communication with a student was placed on leave, district officials said this week. Shawnee Mission North High School teacher Alexander Morris was charged with five felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor last week. And Jason L. Carey, a substitute teacher in Belton, allegedly sent nude photos of himself to eighth graders and is accused of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl in early August.

Teen scammer, claiming to be local basketball player, hitting Johnson County neighborhoods up for money
LENEXA, Kan. – A teen scammer is scouring neighborhoods in Johnson County looking to get money out of generous people.
Police say the teen suspect is ringing doorbells in Lenexa claiming to be on the Olathe Northwest basketball team.
Melody Cole bought the Papa Murphy’s coupons the kid was selling for $20.
“I wanted to support the basketball team and make a difference for the kid,” Cole said.
Cole has two daughters who are on the dance team at Olathe Northwest. While at the game she checked the basketball roster for the junior named Ethan. He wasn’t on it.
“I never found that description,” Cole said. “So when I saw that on Nextdoor, it made sense.” The Olathe Northwest assistant principal who is in charge of fundraisers, said the school has not partnered with Papa Murphy’s on any fundraisers with any clubs of athletic teams this school year.
“That was not legitimate at all,” Danny Chavez with the Lenexa Police Department said. “There was no partnership between the school and the establishment.”
If someone is going door to door in your neighborhood, Chavez says it’s smart to vet the seller. Ask them detailed questions that have to do with the product or team they claim to be part of.
“You know, tell me about the coach,” Chavez said. “Do you go to Olathe Northwest? So maybe trying to get a little information out of that person. It’s totally appropriate to ask for identification.”
Cole did that. She said they knew the same people on a different ONW sports team.
“He seemed to know a lot of people, so I went with it,” Cole said. “It’s crazy.”
Now learning the Papa Murphy’s coupons may be valid but the money did not go to benefit ONW basketball. Cole said it leaves a bad taste in her mouth.
“I just would hope that he would find a different outlet to help support his family if he really is in the midst of some hard times,” Cole said.
FOX4 showed the Lenexa Papa Murphy’s a picture of the coupons Cole bought. A manager says they are valid but hopes the teen stops scamming victims because the store actually does do fundraisers with local schools.

Olathe NW throws early graduation ceremony for grad joining Army
OLATHE, Kan. — Olathe Northwest High School celebrated one of its own with a special graduation ceremony.
On Tuesday, Principal Chris Zuck read his 2020 commencement speech all for one senior: Carsen Cook.
“I was pretty happy that I was even getting a ceremony at that point because I just thought I would get my diploma mailed to me, so it was a little surprising,” Carsen said.
The school year came to an abrupt end because of COVID-19, and instead of celebrating graduating seniors right away with the usual pomp and circumstance, Olathe School District is waiting until later this summer.
But there’s one exception. Students joining the military get their own ceremony now.
“This is so exciting,” Carsen’s mom Melanie said. “I have goosebumps.”
“He leaves June 1 for training,” his dad Dan said.
Olathe NW hopes the ceremony shows Carsen how much the appreciate his sacrifice and hard work.
The new Raven grad is headed into the Army and already has big plans for his future.
“One day I hope to work for Boeing as a mechanic,” he said. “That’s something I really, really want to do.”
