Spoiler Alert for FAR: Lone Sails + FAR: Changing Tides
[Content Warnings: submechanophobia, thalassophobia] Side note: Both of the games have a 2.5D perspective, puzzle elements, a great sense of scale, child protagonists, and mechanical imagery. The music, taken from one of Little Nightmares' promotional trailers, seems like a perfect backing for two children who have to find each other. Also, the direction of some footage was rotated to give the general sense that the two were "approaching" each other as they traveled.

Opening Night Live's Best Indie Reveal: Herdling
“From the creators of Far: Changing Tides” reads the pale introduction appearing on-screen like mist. It’s followed up by a nod to the publisher’s ties to Firewatch as a long shadow comes into focus. The stage is set. The mood fixed. What will all this lead to? A cute giant creature! Okomotive is planning to release “a stirring and beautiful journey into the mountains” called Herdling sometime…

Once a professor of mine at the university once said that “what distinguishes an exquisite work of fiction from a sub-par one is the believability and the benchmark it sets.”
Tumblr media
My impression with FAR Lone Sails has been extremely similar to that, dare I say. What kicks off as a small girl visiting a tomb and getting into a gigantic disproportioned vehicle evolves into one of the finest games I ever had the chance to check out.
Tumblr media
FAR: Lone Sails is a side-scrolling story-rich game supported with a superb piano-heavy classical uplifting orchestra soundtrack. Whenever I see or hear of a “side-scrolling” game I get hesitant to give it a go because there is a fine balance for the developers to be aware of. Side-scrolling games can go both ways, my experience so far has proved that I either love or despise them, on the one hand I have Limbo, Inside, Ori (series) and on the other hand I have Somerville and the like. If the game depends upon narration and story-richness and not action and game mechanics, the story HAS TO reach the expectation and captivate the player’s attention. FAR: Lone Sails is so successful in this regard that I am speechless as to how I can describe how fluid and smooth it is.  The game does not include any text-based or voiceover narration whatsoever, yet you feel right at home from the start instantly, I found myself hooked up in this silent story, just sailing (pun intended) with it, pleased to see where it will take me. Let me put it this way, I didn’t ask myself “who is this small girl, whose grave was that? What kind of vehicle is this?” I felt everything was in its proper place and I was thrilled to be a part of this surreal experience.
Tumblr media
As the player, you establish an emotional bond with this metallic body over time, you care for it, you take care of it, new parts get installed on it, the tyres get replaced, you repair it, the vehicle becomes your ever-lasting company. One last thing I feel the need to share is the fascinating background scenery throughout the game. The setting evolves and changes as you go, you witness a completely different world than yours, still it achieves to be genuine to the bone. We observe this, almost post-industrialist era where every little building and structure is in shambles, almost whispering us that once upheld glory of it is long gone, time’s changed, we’re changed, the world is in disarray, it is right there, we pass it by, catching clever glimpses and details of it, a billboard in pieces we see which proclaims “We Build Our Future”.

Tag Map
This post will be updated from time to time to list a couple of common tags I use and their meanings in relation to this blog in terms of functionality. If you find yourself annoyed or in any way distressed by seeing content in one of these areas, give the tag a mute, please! That’s what they’re here for! Curate the okomot experience that you want to have!
#ai-generated - This post will feature something that is AI generated, be it text or image or video.
#artwork - This post will feature artwork that I have created. Mediums may differ wildly.
#content - This post will feature content that I’ve worked very hard on and consider to be substantive. You won’t get many things in this category, but the things that are will be guaranteed juicy.
#fiction - This post will feature some fiction that I have written.
#meme - This post is a meme. Worth muting if you want to avoid lower quality content. May include shitposts or snippy comments as well.
#nsfw - This post is “not safe for work”. I won’t be using this for casual profanity in my posts, but if something happens to be heavily sexual or violent or whathaveyou in a strong enough manner that I imagine a public onlooker might not be pleased, then you betcha I’m gonna use this tag.
#personal - This post will feature content about my personal life.
#photography - This post will feature various photographs that I've taken. These are usually organized as collages of various images, often taken in a similar stretch of time, but can really be anything.
#reference - This post is intended to be some type of centralized resource.
#repost - This post is something that I didn’t create myself. Will be used for reblogs or when I post a meme or something like that sourced from elsewhere. If I did any amount of work on it (even if it’s just an edit), it probably won’t use this tag.
#review - This post will feature some type of review of some form of media or experience. This will usually be accompanied with a more specific tag, such as "music review" or "movie review".
#venting - This post will feature me sorting through some feelings. These posts may be very upsetting, and may be angry or sad. Recommended that you mute this tag if you would prefer to avoid these types of posts. I don’t intend to make these at the moment, but figured I should just add it to this list in the event that I ever do.

FAR: Changing Tides Review - Riding the Waves of Melancholy
FAR: Changing Tides Review – Riding the Waves of Melancholy
Indie studio Okomotive from Switzerland has previously been noted for only one, but very solid game – Far: Lone Sails. A melancholic three-hour adventure on a bizarre all-terrain vehicle through the remains of an extinct civilization has rallied around itself a friendly backbone of fans of atmospheric indie adventures like Inside and Journey. Far: Changing Tides, as you might guess, is a sequel…
