Drabble Request Help
This turned a little more sad in parts than antics, hopefully the end makes up for that. @cinlat of course owns Fynta. 
Characters: Noara Starspark, Balic Cormac and Fynta Wolfe

Story: Jedi Sitters (where Noara’s time under the Emperor’s control has left some lingering issues)
Water splashed up Noara’s legs with every step she took, though ‘water’ was a generous description. It was more of a muddy, smelly sludge that she knew was going to be next to impossible to clean off her clothing. Trudging through this swamp wasn’t the grossest thing she had ever done but it was getting higher on her list with every step. Her boots and pants all the way up to her knees were soaked with the thick sludge. 
If that wasn’t bad enough, the air was equally terrible. The humidity was stifling, making her clothing stick to her skin and every breath she took felt more like she was drinking the air. The smell of the swamp was so thick she could taste it in her mouth. 
Looking over at her companions, Fynta and Cormac looked far more comfortable than she felt. Their full armor kits, with their internal environment control units, protected them. She felt a pang of jealousy but a flash of sunlight off Fynta’s helmet smothered the feeling before it could take root. 
The feel of air on her face, no matter how it smelled, felt, or even tasted, was better than being trapped like that. Even just imagining how close the interior of a helmet would be to her face made her breath hitch unpleasantly. Memories threatened to rise up, the oily feel of a torture mask, the cramped, dark space that forced her to sleep in a ball but she mentally stamped them down. She didn’t want to go back down that particular hole. 
Looking for a distraction, Noara stepped up onto a partially submerged log and then hopped off it, dropping down into the sludge heavily. The thick liquid splashed up her legs and on to Cormac, painting what little clean bits of his armor remained on his torso. He cursed and Noara laughed, enjoying his reaction.
Cormac shook his head at her, the helmet making it hard to guess what expression he was sending her way. “How can you stand this?” he asked, wiping futilely at the muck. 
Noara shrugged, “it’s not really that bad.” She knew it wasn’t an entirely true answer, but compared to the anxiety the idea of being covered up like he is incited she would take the smelly, humid swamp anyday. The way he cocked his head to the side made her think he was trying to detect the lie in her words but her smile must have been convincing because he reached for his helmet. 
Behind him Fynta’s covered head shook but she didn’t speak up to stop the big man from pulling off his helmet. The moment his face was visible he grimaced and coughed. “I immediately regret this decision.” 
Fynta smacked him on the back as Noara laughed. “I could have told ya it was a bad idea.”
Turning his head, Cormac glared at her. “So why didn’t you?”
“And miss that look on your face? Never.”
Cormac shook his head but was smiling before he gestured at Noara. “We need to get her a kit, making her breathe this shit in is inhumane.”
“No,” Noara said quickly, too quickly if the look on his face when he turned back to her was any indication. She’d never told anyone about her aversion to small spaces and things covering her face, at least no one since she was released from the healer’s care back on Tython. Keeping the oxygen mask on her face while she was in their kolto tank was another kind of torture. 
The two soldiers exchanged a look before Fynta walked over to Noara and laid a hand on her shoulder. “You okay?”
Part of Noara wanted to say she was fine, brush off their concern, and a few months before she would have but the longer she knew the ‘retired’ Havoc squad the more she was opening up to them. More surprising, she trusted them. So instead of telling a lie she shook her head. “It’s the helmet, I just.. I can’t wear that,” she said, taking a shaky breath as those memories of being trapped came to mind and she shivered despite the heat. “It’s too close, too small.”
“Hey hey it’s okay,” Cormac said, quickly wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”
“Of course not, we all have our things.” Fynta said with a nod of her helmet. “Just means you’re stuck breathing this shit.”
“Thanks.” Noara leaned into his hug and closed her eyes for a moment, taking comfort from the contact. It didn’t matter that he was wearing heavy armor and covered in grime, the easy undemanding touch was soothing to her nerves. After a moment she pulled away and smiled up at him. “We should keep going, the ruins shouldn’t be far off now.”
Agreeing they all start trudging through the swamp again. When Cormac fixed his helmet to hang off his belt instead of putting it back on, Noara reached over and knocked her fist against it. “You can put that back on, it won’t hurt my feelings.”

As more factories began rising on the shores surrounding New York harbor during the Industrial Revolution of the late 19th century, the city decided something needed to be done to both ease the increasing shipping congestion in the harbor and improve access to the factories themselves. The result was the Gowanus Canal, a 1.8 mile stretch of manmade industrial waterway snaking through West Central Brooklyn between Park Slope and Carrol Gardens. Once completed, the Gowanus  allowed barges to reach those factories and warehouses which by then were beginning to move inland, as well as giving those same factories a place to dump their chemical runoff.

In more recent years a few stray dolphins have likewise wandered into the canal, but quickly succumbed to the caustic toxic soup.
I’ve been obsessed with the Gowanus for thirty years now. Shortly after moving to Brooklyn, I found myself wandering over the Union Street bridge, and knew immediately from the smell and that unwholesome color that the Gowanus was something special. I don’t know how many other people would consider the Gowanus a must-see tourist spot, but whenever friends are visiting from out of town, I make a point of bringing them there, especially on hot summer days. I mean, how many other towns can lay claim to The Most Polluted Waterway in America? Where’s your civic pride?
While so much of the city has been erased or sanitized with a mind toward making it a genteel safe haven for tourists, multi-national corporations and millionaires with really obnoxious children, the Gowanus endured. As “New York” as an idea continues to vanish, it remained a ragged and gangrenous open wound, there to remind us of what we once were.

When earlier clean-up plans faltered, and other piecemeal improvements (like replacing the Union Street bridge or installing two massive holding tanks to help control the CSO) went nowhere, I always breathed a sigh of relief. The Gowanus is a symbol, a reference point, and as much a part of New York’s history and personality as the Chrysler Building or The Cyclone, if smellier and more deadly. It’s both a living history lesson about New York’s industrial past and a cautionary environmental tale. It should, as is, be given landmark status.
But that’s not going to happen.
According to EPA estimates, the dredging is scheduled to be completed by 2024. By that point, the toxic sludge will be replaced with clean, bright sand, the canal  will be brimming with happy, non-mutated aquatic life, and smiling tourists will be splashing about in the sparkling water and picnicking in the clean and generic parks that line its banks. I, meanwhile, will lay my hopes on the fact there are no imminent plans afoot to do anything about the combined sewer overflow.
