Stocks close down; late-hour value hunting lends support
Stocks on Friday continued to decline on selling in blue-chip shares; although late-hour buying from value hunters helped the Index pare some of the losses at the end of a worst week, dealers said.
Analyst Arham Ghous at JS Global said selling pressure was witnessed in the market during initial hours as the index dipped to an intraday low by losing 1,289 points.  “This pressure in the market was on the back of likely redemptions in mutual funds,” Ghous said. “However, the market recovered during the late hours as optimistic investors came in to accumulate positions at attractive levels.”
The KSE-100 shares Index of Pakistan Stock Exchange lost 0.46 percent or 225.51 points to close at 48,555.30 points. KSE 30-share Index shed 0.90 percent or 231.74 points to end at 25,375.63 points. As many as 356 shares were active; of which 155 increased, 190 decreased and 11 remained unchanged.
The ready market volumes stood at 221.76 million shares as compared to 403.935 million shares a day earlier. Analyst Ali Raza at Elixir Securities said the worst week for Pakistan’s equities since February 2009 came to an end as the benchmark KSE 100 Index shed more than 4,000 points or 7.8 percent in the past five days with Friday being the only day that saw late buying from value hunters.
“Market opened gap down and witnessed extreme volatility, followed by recovery that helped to pare most of the morning losses that had pulled the Index down 2.6 percent intraday,” Raza said.
Reported panic selling in Emerging Market stocks from institutions contributed most to declines as rumors did rounds of local money selling to meet possible redemptions, while lack of clarity on foreign investment was also one of the primary concerns.
Oil & Gas Development Company (down 3.4 percent), Habib Bank (dropping 1.6 percent) and United Bank Limited (falling 1.6 percent) were among the top three laggards of the day. K-Electric (up 4.5 percent) closed higher and emerged as the volumes leader.
Going forward, analysts expect foreigners’ activity in days ahead to guide the broader market direction. Clarity on direction of foreign flows and implementation of leveraged products may help revive investors’ confidence, they said.
Companies, reflecting highest gains, included Unilever Foods up Rs123.5 to close at Rs6,200/share and Colgate Palmolive that rose Rs107.18 to end at Rs2,401.16/share.
Companies, reflecting most losses, included Sapphire Textile down Rs110.27 to end at Rs2,095.17/share and Wyeth Pakistan that fell Rs86.62 to close at Rs2,127.15/share.
Highest volumes were witnessed in Power Cement (R) with a turnover of 16.282 million shares. The share gained four paisas to close at Rs2.09/share. Bank of Punjab (R) was the second with a turnover of 12.512 million shares. It inched up 14 paisas to end at Rs1.29/share. K-Electric Limited was the third with a turnover of 12.086 million shares. It rose 31 paisas to finish at Rs7.25/share.
