Turning Heads (a Haikyuu fanfic by hoperenae)
PREVIOUS — SERIES MASTERLIST — NEXT
PART 7- Two-on-Two
[[ later that night ]]
We texted back and forth like this for hours that night. It was nonstop, and I couldn’t get enough. It was the most we had talked since we met. Volleyball seemed to unite us in a way that we wouldn’t have without it. Eventually, my mom came into my room and told me to get some sleep, so I sent one last goodnight text and set my phone on the charger.
A few days later, it was finally the weekend. Oikawa (it still felt weird calling him Toruu, so I often refrained from it) invited me to practice with him at Seijoh’s gym that afternoon. Being the captain, he had a key to the gym, so he could get in on the weekends. When I got there, I was surprised to find two other boys that I recognized from the practice match.
“Arya-chan!” Oikawa exclaimed as I dropped my bag at the door and put on my volleyball shoes.
“Hey,” I said, straightening up and gesturing toward the other boys. “Who are your friends?”
“This is Iwa-chan–I mean, Iwaizumi Hajime, a third-year like me.” He pointed to the boy with darker brown hair and a sharp jawline who was only a handful of centimeters taller than me.
“Also vice-captain and the ace,” Iwaizumi added, shooting Oikawa a ‘tired of your shit’ look. I got the feeling they were good friends.
“Of course, of course, Iwa-chan,” Oikawa beamed, chuckling. “And this is Kindaichi Yūtarō, a first-year like you!”
“I’m a middle blocker,” Kindaichi added bashfully. He was even taller than Oikawa and had black hair that was spiked to a point at the top of his head. He kind of resembled a turnip, but I thought it best not to tell him that.
“Nice to meet you guys,” I said with a small smile. At the practice match, they were super intimidating, but now, they seemed friendly and down-to-earth.
“Say, since we’re all here,” Oikawa began, “why don’t we spice things up and play a little two-on-two?” He was grinning deviously. Iwaizumi rolled his eyes.
“Can I at least warm up first?” I laughed.
“By all means!” Oikawa chirped.
Oikawa threw me some tosses so I could practice my spikes. I had seen him set during the practice match, but experiencing it personally was on a whole other level. Right off the bat, he was giving me tosses that were really easy to hit, which surprised me because he wasn’t used to tossing to a lefty. When a couple were a bit high or low, he apologized and adjusted. He truly was incredible. We practiced passing and serving, and then, when I felt warmed up enough, we split up into teams of two: me and Oikawa vs Iwaizumi and Kindaichi.
“Don’t go easy on us, Iwa-chan,” Oikawa hollered from across the court.
“Wouldn’t dream of it, Trashykawa,” Iwaizumi sassed back. I laughed at his nickname, and Oikawa stuck out his lip and pouted for a second. Then, he turned to me and leaned down, his face so close that I felt his warm breath on my cheek.
“Alright, we’re gonna use your left-handedness as our weapon,” he strategized, all seriousness now. “If you can, try to aim your spikes and serves at Kindaichi; he struggled to receive yours at the practice match. When we go up to block, jump slightly later than me so your block will reach its height at the same time as mine. Got it?”
“As you wish, Great King,” I bowed. Oikawa burst into laughter.
“Great King! I like that!” he boasted.
The match was exhausting. At first, it seemed like Oikawa and I were gonna run away with it, but once they adjusted to my left-handedness, the other two fired back 3 points in a row. Honestly, I was having a lot of fun. It was exciting to play against people who were better than me; I liked the challenge. Meanwhile, Oikawa had shed his goofy personality and instead was far more intense, much like at the practice match. By the end of it, I was dripping sweat (very attractive, I’m sure) and huffing and puffing, and so were the boys.
“I gotta hand it to you, Arya,” Iwa began, “you really pack a punch. I definitely underestimated your abilities.”
“Oh, well, thanks,” I stammered, blushing and twirling my ponytail around my finger. “It was really fun playing with you guys.”
“Likewise,” Kindaichi chimed in, giving me a sweet boyish smile.
We made sure to do our stretches (Oikawa tried to skip out on a couple, but Iwa smacked the back of his head and told him to suck it up) and then gathered up our things.
“Shall I walk you home?” Oikawa asked, grabbing my bag off the floor and slinging it over his shoulder.
“I can carry that,” I insisted, reaching for my bag.
“No, no, no,” he countered. “A gentleman always carries his lady’s bags.”
“Oh, so I’m your lady now?” I jested playfully. Was the Great King blushing?
“I just meant–it’s just that–”
“I know what you meant,” I chuckled. “I’m messing with you.” He smiled sheepishly, which was different from his usual confidence but not unwelcomed. I was sad that the fun day was coming to an end, but the walk home held the promise of more time with my Pretty Boy, and that was more than enough for me.

HQ boys as Taylor Swift songs-folklore
characters- Oikawa (exile), Atsumu (my tears ricochet), Meian (illicit affairs)
tags/warnings- ANGST, breakup, heartbreak, cheating, mentions of alcohol, manipulative behaviour, fluff in Meian’s if you squint
suggestions for pt2 would be appreciated (currently thinking of cardigan with Bokuto and hoax with Tsukishima)
Oikawa
“I can see you standin', honey
With his arms around your body
Laughin' but the joke's not funny at all”
He had told himself over and over again to not look; in the flight, in the ride to the hotel, even as he passed the entrance gates of the exquisite banquet hall where the reunion was being held. All he had to do was keep his eyes away.
But you were here, and he had never been good at withstanding the cosmic pull you always held. Even if you were in the arms of another, laughing like you always used to, with him.
I think I've seen this film before
And I didn't like the ending
“What changed, Tooru?” Your eyes were red and puffy, you had exhausted all your tears while he simply stood in the corner and watched.
“This isn’t going to work out y/n. We’re both miles away, with different lives, in different time zones, around different people; we can’t have a relationship built on nothi-” He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, “...I’m saving both of us from the pain that would come with splitting a few years down the line.”
“Do you still love me?”
Oikawa was familiar with the grief that came with loss; the grief of giving something every single bit of your soul, only to come out empty-handed and wounded.
“Go back home, y/n.”
You're not my homeland anymore
So what am I defendin' now?
You were my town
Now I'm in exile seein' you out
Perhaps he had damned himself to ruination. Given up without a fight. But that didn’t matter now.
You look ethereal, with stars in your eyes and glee in your smile. It doesn’t matter if he’s not the one behind it. You would have been a shell of who you are right now if you had stayed with him anyways.
He turns around, heading for exit.
Just one last time. He promises himself. His lips curve upwards into a bittersweet smile as he turns around to get his last look. Instead, he finds himself staring into the expanse of an entire galaxy. A cosmic explosion coming his way as the floor shifts from beneath him.
No, you definitely don’t sound the same.
How long has it been since he heard that voice?
“Not even gonna say goodbye before you leave Oikawa?”
What happened to your precious “Tooru”?
Atsumu
Even on my worst day, did I deserve, babe
All the hell you gave me?
The clock reads 01:27 am. You’ve been sitting on the couch for the past 3 hours, the untouched dinner on the table gone cold long ago. You hear the sound of a door slamming shut, hushed footsteps making their way towards the center of the apartment, coming to a halt at the sight of you.
“Why are you still awake?”
“You promised we’d have dinner together tonight.”
“Listen, it got late at practice, you could’ve just eaten without me.”
“You could’ve at least dropped a text.” You murmur, trying to keep your voice from breaking. This wasn’t the first time he had stood you up.
“It’s not that big of a deal y/n. You realise how important the upcoming match is to me, don’t you?” He sighs, shaking his head in disappointment, “Let’s just go to bed okay, I’m tired.”
“Okay.” You mutter, loosening your grip on the 2 year anniversary gift hidden below the couch cushion. A platinum ring with yours and Atsumu’s initials carved on the inside.
You wear the same jewels that I gave you
As you bury me
Atsumu’s vision is blurry, shirt drenched in sweat, his head pounding as he’s pushed against the wall. He doesn’t know whether it’s from the screaming match he just had with you, or from the two bottles he chugged at a shady bar right after he walked out.
All that matters right now is the feeling of the hands of the girl that’s kissing his jaw. The same spot where you had pressed a chaste kiss not too long ago as you told him that you were going to leave-
No, he’s not going to think about it. All that matters is the touch of skin against skin, filling in the void you caused as he kneads the supple flesh of her thigh with his hand. The same hand that bore a platinum ring, the letters engraved inside of it now fatuous and futile.
You had to kill me, but it killed you just the same
Cursing my name, wishing I stayed
You turned into your worst fears
No, no, no.
Why are you here?
Why are you back?
“I had hoped we could talk-” You take a deep breath, feet stuck in place as you lay your eyes upon the marks littering his jaw, his neck, going much farther down-
A sob comes out from deep inside your chest.
No, no, no.
He’s looking at you, your crestfallen face, tears falling off of it like british showers.
He’s acting before he can think, falling to his knees, grabbing onto your waist as you try to walk out.
“No! Angel, please just let me explain. I thought you were never coming back- I would've never-”
“Never what Atsumu?!” Your voice is louder than you expected it to be.
“Never what? A single fight is all it takes for you to discard everything we ever had? For you to step over everything I put into a relationship that has barely even existed for so long!”
He’s never heard you shout before. But it's okay, it’s okay if you shout at him, if you break a few things, hell you can wreck his whole apartment if it means that you’re staying for even just a moment longer.
But you’re not. You’re pushing him away, movements stern, as you try to make your way to the door. All he can do is cling onto you, crying your name over and over again as he racks his brain for a way to make you stay.
Why was it always you who knew what to say when it came to fixing things?
Meian
Make sure nobody sees you leave
Hood over your head
Keep your eyes down
Tell your friends you're out for a run
You'll be flushed when you return
You knew there were aspects of his life he had no control over. After all, he was watched by thousands of eyes everyday; the star player, the golden boy; the captain of MSBY. So how does it matter if you had to go a mile extra to hide what you had?
You loved who he was as a person and how he made you feel. Good-morning and goodnight texts, warm cuddles after matches, dancing in the kitchen to songs you don’t know the name of, late night drives to get takeout or go stargazing, laughing till you were on the floor crying. You loved him so much.
And that's the thing about illicit affairs
And clandestine meetings
And stolen stares
They show their truth one single time
But they lie, and they lie, and they lie
A billion little times
“Volleyball player Meian Shugo spotted with a blonde beauty at the MSBY vs Adlers afterparty. Could she be his rumoured girlfriend that we’ve been kept in the dark about all along? Read more for exclusive deta-”
You can’t shed a single tear staring at the cover of the magazine. Not because your heart hasn't just been ripped out of your chest, but because you’re in public, standing in line at the grocery store picking up snacks for you and...Meian.
Why did you not see this coming? What hurt more was that you knew the girl. Meian had introduced you to her as a friend, and her as his social media manager. So this was clearly a misunderstanding right? It had to be. Despite telling yourself that over and over again, you still couldn’t get the picture of his arm wrapped around her waist and the smile etched onto his face out of your mind as you drove home, tears blurring your vision.
Don't call me kid
Don't call me baby
Look at this godforsaken mess that you made me
“Baby please listen to me-”
You’re sitting on the edge of the couch. You don’t know how long ago you stopped screaming, how long ago the anger dissipated and the rage turned into silent sobs, leaving behind a gaping hollow feeling in your chest.
You feel him shift closer to you but you don’t at him, still sniffing, your head buried in your arms.
“She was at the party because she’s our manager, you know Jessi-”
“Don’t say her name.” you hiss out.
“I wish I never met you, I wish I never got into this stupid arrangement. I wish-” You’re rambling now, sobs escaping between every few words as you try to comprehend the situation, “I hate this. I hate you.”
Heavy silence hangs in the room.
And you know damn well
For you I would ruin myself
A million little times
You find arms being wrapped around you and your head being pulled into a warm chest. You try to fight at first, but you’re tired; your throat hurts, your eyes burn and everything feels so cold, so you let yourself guiltily fall into his comfort, pathetically sobbing into his neck.
He patiently waits for your sobs to quiet down, one hand rubbing gentle circles onto your back while the other cradles the back of your head.
“She was at the party with the whole team and the publicist used it as a way to create gossip. That’s all there is to it. I had not given my consent for them to go ahead with this, but they refused to make our relationship public. Apparently, they didn’t think that the age gap between us would reflect well on my reputation.”
Meian’s heart breaks at the sound that leaves you as he says that, your hand gripping onto the fabric of his shirt as you start sniffing once more.
“I don’t care about what they say princess, you know that.” He kisses the top of your head, pulling you even closer to himself as if he could absorb the pain from you.
“I’m so sorry, give me another chance please. I didn’t tell you because I knew it’d hurt you. I promise I’ll make it up to you, please?”
You look up at him. His eyes are filled with tender love and pure adoration, it makes your heart melt. You nod, burying your face into the crook of his neck. Of course you would, he's your precious Meian, you’d always forgive him. Why did you ever think he’d do anything to hurt you?
Meian smiles into your hair, ignoring the sound of the notification popping up on the phone kept on the table,
Jessica: hey, we're still on for tonight right ? ;)

BREAK UP BLUES • PRETTY SETTER SQUAD
requests: OPEN
warnings: break ups
a/n: i ‘ve had one break up in my whole 18 years of living, therefore i’m an expert 😋
please reblog and reply, engagement is both fun & important ✨
wanna be apart of my general taglist? fill out the form here!
alt. title: how the p.s.s. reacts when you break up with them
he would be so… lost
suga seems like the type of person that when he loves, he loves hard
so when you come out of the blue (seemingly) talking about breaking up, he will literally be at a lost for words
genuinely won’t understand and will try to hear you out but the drumming in his ears is way too loud for him to hear anything your saying
“..but yeah, i’m not ready for a relationship and i just need to work on myself right now”
“yeah yeah of course, i.. uh, hope you find yourself”
ngl this man is bitter abt the break up, you claim you need to work on yourself which is fine but why would you put yourself in a relationship if you weren’t technically ready?
kōshi is heartbroken for the most part, and would like to still be friends with you after his wounds heal
but that idea is immediately thrown out the window when he sees you in a relationship only after six months of y’all breaking up
i thought you had to work on yourself?
most likely caught on to the fact you wanted to break up long before it happens
he’s observant and he loves you, of course he’ll notice
thinks it’s because he doesn’t spend much time with you or because he isn’t huge on pda
starts to change himself to fit what he thinks you want, gets to the point where he’s not even himself
kenma just loves you so much and although he’ll never vocalize it; he doesn’t want to lose you
so if he had to become a different person for you to stay, then he will
unfortunately this just makes things worse
“kozume, we should break up. these past few months have been weird and it’s like i don’t even know who you are”
he can’t even respond. can’t tell if he’s more distraught over you breaking up with him or from you calling him by his last name
you’ve never done that, even when the two of you were just friends
doesn’t fight you on your decision, he’s tired
once the whole ordeal is said and done, he calls kuroo
being his best friend, kuroo has seen kenma sad before but…
this was the first time he’s ever heard kenma cry so openly
i have never wrote for this man, pls have mercy
anyways he personally reminds me of myself
meaning he has that, “i’ll hurt you before you hurt me” mentality (aka. self sabotaging)
is it healthy? absolutely not but he can’t help it
if he feels you becoming distant or seemingly pulling away from him little by little, he will become extremely paranoid
now semi doesn’t seem like the type to beg anyone to stay with him because that’s just not his style
but he’ll definitely fight until he can’t no more
the nail in the coffin was when he saw your stuff disappear from your shared apartment little by little
obviously confronts you about it and swears his heart stopped when you say you’re moving back in with your parents for a bit
eita knew what that meant, he wasn’t stupid
so before you can utter another word, he blurts out:
“we should break up.”
“h-huh?”
can tell he caught you off guard and despite being upset, he can’t help but feel a little proud
he got to hurt you, before you hurt him
…but then why was he hurting so much?
it’s mutal… or so you thought
akaashi would be shocked when you bring up the idea of breaking up
but because he’s in tune with his emotions, he wouldn’t show it
instead he’ll pretend he was thinking abt the same thing, when he definitely was not
“i think we should break up, keiji. i’m just not feeling this relationship anymore, sorry”
“no need to apologize, i was just thinking the same thing”
on the inside he would be so confused
where did he go wrong? was it something he did? was he so boring that you got bored of the relationship?
all these questions with no answers
he strikes me as the type to throw himself into his work on a regular basis but this increased tenfold once you break up with him
it’s to the point where he neglects himself and bokuto has to come over or this man will starve
doesn’t cry abt it, obviously he’s sad but he just doesn’t have it in him to cry
crying won’t fix anything, so why bother?
you announcing that you want to break up throws him for a loop
he genuinely didn’t see anything wrong with your relationship so he’s hella confused
“you.. want to break up?”
“yeah, i just think we should move on and see other people”
“why? i don’t want to see other people, i want you”
this poor man
of course he respects your decision, no matter how much he hates it
and i feel like he wouldn’t register the fact the two of you broke up until he vocalizes it
“what happened between you and y/n?”
“oh. we broke up”
“…we broke up”
that’s when it hits him the hardest
doesn’t seem like the type to cry about it but he has shed a few tears
kageyama will just throw himself into his volleyball career and swear off dating for a while
he doesn’t want to put himself out there just to get his heart broken again
this man has been through break ups before so this isn’t his first rodeo
but honestly wasn’t expecting it, he thought y’all were good
clearly not
“—i’m sorry, i wish you nothing but the best though”
he tuned out the minute he heard break up and didn’t tune back in until that last bit
and unlike semi, oikawa does strike me as the type to beg you to stay
“you really wanna give this up?”
“come on cutie, we can work this out!”
“why are you giving up on us?”
“y/n… please.”
it’s extremely painful for both you and him (more so him, of course)
i hope you aren’t too close with his friends bc they will avoid you, especially iwaizumi
it’s nothing personal but they knew tooru first and they don’t want to “betray” him
oikawa will cry about the whole thing but only by himself
to the public, he’s perfectly fine.
“better off without you” he says
it’s not like the love of his life broke his heart, why wouldn’t he be fine?

‘H’ FOR HAJIME
— 𝐈𝐖𝐀𝐈𝐙𝐔𝐌𝐈 𝐇𝐀𝐉𝐈𝐌𝐄
author’s note: hi everyone! i read this post from @peach-pops and couldn’t help but write it out into a fic :”) please brace yourself for angst because this was one hell of a ride :”)))) enjoy!!!
genre: pure angst
warning: car accident, death, mourning a loss
word count: 1.5k
He sped around the corner, eyes immediately drawn to the flashing lights of the ambulance blocking his view of the accident. He stopped the car and ran to the scene, not even bothering to kill the ignition.
Iwaizumi had gotten a call 10 minutes ago saying that his best friend had gotten into a car accident, and before the caller could say another word, he’d hung up and rushed to the location of the crash.
Iwaizumi pushed past the crowd, muttering curt apologies as he made his way to the front. As he emerged from the sea of people, his breath hitched and his heart pounded as he assessed the scene before him.
It was awful, like something out of a horror movie.
Glass shards glinted dangerously across the floor. Oikawa’s car was now completely disfigured; the hood was banged in, the sides were too and the windows and windshield were just empty spaces where glass used to be. Iwaizumi craned his neck to get a glimpse of the driver’s seat, but was unable to see past the inflated airbags.
Distressed and anxious, he grabbed the arm of the nearest officer.
“Oikawa Tooru. The driver. Is he okay?” his voice came a little harsher than expected due to the tension in his body. He didn’t even know how tight his grip was until the officer tried to pry his arm away.
“Please stay calm sir. We are trying to recover the bodies from the car right now,” he stated.
“Bodies?” Iwaizumi repeated. Plural?
“Yes. Two were found in the car and one is presumably dead.”
The thought of seeing his best friend limp and lifeless made his stomach churn and his heart clench. He looked back at the beaten-up car and saw them carrying out a body. Iwaizumi’s heart almost stopped beating. The body may have been bloodied and bruised, but he would recognise those soft, brown locks anywhere.
“Tooru!” he cried, lurching forward and running past the protesting officer.
“Tooru!” he shouted again, wishing, wanting, praying that his best friend was still breathing.
“Sir, please back away,” the paramedics said, lifting his limp body onto the stretcher and rolling him towards the ambulance. Iwaizumi followed, never once leaving Oikawa’s side.
“Dammit Shittykawa, wake up!” he yelled, eyes trained on him to look for any signs of life.
Suddenly, Oikawa began to stir and his eyes fluttered open. Iwaizumi breathed a sigh of relief, and Oikawa turned to the man who was making so much noise.
“Iwa… chan…” his voice was hoarse. “I’m… sorry…” he said through laboured breathing, his eyelids slowly drooping back down.
“Oi, you better stay awake Shittykawa. Don’t go back to sleep!” Iwaizumi’s voice was earnest. Desperate.
The ends of Oikawa’s lips curled up at the sound of the nickname. His eyebrows then furrowed as he let out a string of coughs.
“Sir, please step back. We have to load him into the ambulance,” the paramedics told Iwaizumi. He nodded curtly and turned his gaze back to his best friend. At least he was alive. Breathing.
But then… who…
“Hajime…”
Iwaizumi’s chest tightened at the sound of Oikawa using his first name. His real name.
Oh no.
“Y/N… I’m sorry… Please forgive me…” was all Iwaizumi heard before the paramedics hauled him into the ambulance and out of his sight.
Y/N? What does Y/N have to do with this?
As if to give a cruel answer to his question, he heard some commotion coming from the direction of the crashed car.
No.
Everything seemed to happen in slow motion; the paramedics running over to the scene, the shouting of the officers saying something about “no pulse” and the dragging of a limp body out from the wreckage.
No no no.
Something glittered under the light of the ambulance and his face contorted in horror as he caught a glimpse of the thin silver chain, a memory from the past surfacing right before his eyes.
“‘H’ for Hajime?” you smiled, looking at the pendant of the necklace he helped to put around your neck.
He chuckled. “Of course, Y/N. That way, I know you’ll be mine forever.” He kissed your lips.
“Happy anniversary, babe.”
His head was spinning, his breaths were ragged and his heart was pounding in his ears. His mind was foggy and he didn’t even realise he had called out your name. All eyes were on him as he pushed past the crowd, shoving everyone aside as he made his way to you.
They were lying.
You weren’t dead.
You couldn’t be.
He came closer, and he saw that the ‘H’ was not attached to the necklace. Maybe it wasn’t you. Maybe it was some other unfortunate person, just not you. He tried to convince himself, reassure himself that everything was going to be okay. But as he moved past the paramedics and the victim came into full view, any sign of hope was consumed by darkness. Because there you lay, face caked in blood and a dull, faraway look in your eyes.
He sunk to his knees and choked out a sob, gathering your body into his arms — pale, limp and lifeless. The world crashed around him as he let out an earth-shattering cry, screaming your name over and over in hopes that you would hear him and wake up. Tears were streaming down his face and he was rocking your bodies back and forth on his knees, paying no attention to the gravel digging into his tough skin.
He was unconsciously shaking his head, as if to deny the reality of the situation. This was just a dream. A horrible nightmare that he would wake up from to find you sleeping peacefully by his side, a smile on your face as you snuggled up next to him.
But he knew. He knew this wasn’t a dream.
Because he was already awake.
He cried and cradled you in his arms, burying your face into his chest because it was something you did that always gave him comfort. Even with all the smoke, he could still catch the distinct scent of your perfume as he hugged your body close to his. The familiar smell caused a lump to form in his throat as he remembered how you would spray it in the mornings as you got ready for the day together. How you would blush when you looked at him through the mirror, only to see that he was already staring at you. How your hand would go up to your necklace, your fingers fiddling with the pendant because it was a habit you developed when you were shy, embarrassed or scared.
Were you scared when the car got hit? Were you holding the necklace he gave you as the car crashed? Were you thinking of him in your last moments?
He grasped your small hands in his, the usual warmth of your skin now replaced with an unfamiliar coldness. He unfurled your fingers so he could hold your hand one last time when something dropped from your palm, right into his lap. He picked it up but had no time to look at it before the officers started grabbing his arms and pulling him away from you.
“No! Stop! Leave us alone!” he yelled at them, trying to push them away as they brought over the white sheet.
“Please just let me hold her! Please! Please…” he sobbed. He was practically begging now, trying to hold on to your physical form even though it was just an empty shell, and you were no longer there. But the officer’s grip on him was as harsh as the reality around him, and as much as he tried to resist, his body gave in to exhaustion and they dragged him away.
His eyes were glazed over as he watched the officers cover your body with the white sheet. He felt hollow and empty as the weight of everything settled over his grieving heart. All the promises you had made about getting married and starting a family together slowly slipped away, like a dream he just couldn’t reach.
He watched them load you up into the vehicle, his expression blank. He wanted to scream and to cry, but he was too tired and felt like he had no more tears left to shed. The ambulance started up and sped down the street, leaving Iwaizumi standing there, aching in silence. As they brought you further away from him, it felt like the string of life that tied you two together had finally been cut.
You were really gone.
And you were never coming back.
Iwaizumi balled his fist and felt something pressing against his palm. Remembering the thing that you’d dropped into his lap, he brought his hand up to look at what it was. What you were holding when you breathed your last breath. As he slowly unclenched his fist, his heart leapt into his throat and he felt a wave of emotion crash down on him again.
There in the palm of his rough hand, was the very thing that was missing from your necklace.
“‘H’ for Hajime?” you smiled.
Iwaizumi clenched his fist around the pendant again, fingernails digging into his palms as your words echoed in his mind, now all but a distant memory. His body tensed and he choked out another sob, now realising that he was the last thing on your mind before you were taken from this world for good.

a ‘you broke me first’ fanfic (sakusa kiyoomi)
request:I just read your a “little did you know” fanfic and I just want to say you’re amazing! Since I’m loving the pain😂 Can I request a “you broke me first” fanfic with Sakusa too? If that’s okay 👉🏼👈🏼
---------------------------------------
note: hi anon!!! i’m so sorry for the delay TT,,, but here it is!!! i hope you enjoy it!! i have one with oikawa (here)! stay safe and take care!
song: you broke me first by tate mcrae
---------------------------------------
maybe you don’t like
talking too much about yourself
you stared at the walls in which held every piece of memory you had shared with him- from your middle school years to that of now. you had been the first one to approach him despite his cold demeanour and unapproachable actions, and to say that you had never regretted that you did so, there were times where you had a couple doubts about being close to him, nevertheless even engaging in the topic of being friends with him.
he had always been closed off- to you, to komori, to every one- you knew that, and you truly did not mind when he never spoke to you about his thoughts and feelings on every particular subject, you were simply just content being close to him. nevertheless, there were times where you wanted him to be more open than he was, instead of lashing out every now and then and apologize afterwards, you longed for him to even say something about how a certain thing felt to him.
but you shoulda told me that
you were thinking ‘bout someone else
yet, you weren’t expecting the wayward turns in the aspects of your relationship, especially not seeing the intentions behind the time he came back moving slightly backwards with each day.
with every tilt, the diamond on your ring finger blinded you with its shine, the light bending at every angle and catching the glisten of the ring you wore. you twisted it with every second passing by, your worry intensifying with every moving handle of the clock. he was running late once again, on the day of his practice, the days he normally rushed back home and cuddled his tiredness away with you. yet, where was he now.
you’re drunk at a party
or maybe it’s just that your car broke down
your phone’s been off for a couple of months
so you’re calling me now
you couldn’t deny how you noticed the subtle movements he did to avoid you: how he rushes away from the table once you had taken your sear, how he had turned his body away from you in the bed, how he no longer kisses you goodbye. consequently, he had not made an effort to even pick up your calls every time you had ringed him, his phone always going into voicemail each time you did so. your messages had been left on seen every time you had texted him, wasting your time on waiting for his never coming reply.
yet now as you stood at a bar in which his teammate had directed, you couldn’t help but ponder on how much you had possibly drifted apart from him, from expressing every detail about each other’s day to not knowing where he was late at night.
i know you, you’re like this
when shit don’t go your way
you needed me to fix it
“(y/n)! wait, it wasn’t what you think it was...”
you walked away from the scene, you had just witnessed, your mind losing the last piece of trust you had ensured him with. you rushed to the exit of the moist place, wanting to run away from everything you couldn’t absorb about. you knew you were on the verge of tears and it was only a matter of seconds before you broke down.
the light breeze hit you as you finally escaped from the walls of suffocation, your ring still glistening under the night light. the same ring that had brought you so much joy now serving a name of unwanted ties and reasons to cry. you twisted the ring, the pain numbing away with every inch off, and you could feel the weight lifting off your shoulders as you did so.
and like me i did
but i ran out of every reason
the screams of your name followed as you inched away from the place you had left him- the same place that had allowed you to make your final decision. you knew you had to solve this no matter what, it was to face you in the very near future even though you wish to avoid it. you turned to face him, you hand extending towards him as you dropped the ring he had put on you, with every gleam of the promising future.
he couldn’t believe what he was facing, he knew he was to expect this sort of behaviour after his treatments towards you. he knew he had been so careless on the topic of love he had chosen with you. he knew he could not keep making up excuses to avoid you- and his guilt from what he had committed. he should have told you earlier and made you suffer less, and maybe only then he could possibly have wiped off all the tears he had made you shed, and feel your warmth in his embrace one last time, in the place you had made him call home.
he knew he had gone too far, and there was no longer a way to turn back.

Cheater! Iwaizumi x reader (angst)
──── ∗ ⋅◈⋅ ∗ ────
a/n: haha this made me laugh, ur too kind my writing is not that good so i cannot guarantee tears
It’s been awhile since I wrote my guy iwa and angst, hopefully this doesn’t turn out too bad eheh this is also sort of like an 800 followers special. Thank you all so much for following and reading my works, i cannot express it any other way :)
warning: angst, cursing, slight mentions
Part 1 | Part 2
You expected this to happen, as hard as it is to swallow the bitter truth that threatened to burn down your whole marriage. This man, what happened? The time he would sacrifice in order to spend just some time with you, only now consumed by his company forcing him to work overtime presumably. The words he spoke to you, full of meaning were now void of emotion and as cold and sharp as icicles hanging from the rooftop edge during winter nights. The love and adoration his eyes used to hold catered only for you.
Where did it go?
Suddenly, the golden band adorned with emerald jewels did not shine as brightly as it used too. Though you kept yours on, it seems his own band was often absent. But you bit your lip, afraid to voice out queries that could end up in another pointless argument.
The door shut hard, yet you do not jump from your seat like you used too. Keeping your blank eyes forward staring at the static of the television. No words, no welcomes were heard.
The calming night breeze coming from an open window only served to add more coldness in the living room.
Recently, all the nagging you did would not serve you both justice. You were only worried for your husband, why did it seem like all he did was yell at you? A simple question concerning what was for dinner would always end up in heated words.
“You can eat alone.”
“But, I just wanted to eat dinner with you, I waited so lo-”
“And why should I care? Just leave me be I’m too tired to deal with you right now.”
But, you always seem like you don’t want to deal with me..
Soon, it all ceased to exist. Any conversation or fight in this matter, it all scurried away as fear of more spiteful words would dig deep into your chest and sting greatly.
But tonight was different, you just missed him so much.
Standing slowly, you trudge behind him wordlessly wrapping your arms around his torso and burying your face into his broad back. He stands frozen, you wish you could see his facial expression. Iwaizumi’s gaze is casted down at the arms enveloping him.
You guessed your arms were pretty skinny now, when was the last time you even had a proper meal?
You tried to ignore the feminine, floral fragrance that lingered on his button up, a scent you know for sure you did not use.
Minutes passed, what felt like hours. After Iwaizumi snapped out of his state, he easily shrugged you off and continued to your once shared bedroom. And all you could do was hold out your now empty arms and stare at his receding form.
No tears shed, you ran out of them awhile ago. However, that familiar aching pain still stirred deep within your gut.
Another night on the couch it seems.
When was the last time you were happy? Your friends voice concern for your well-being, the sparkle in your eyes now dulled to a mere dull light. Eventually you stopped hearing their distressed voices when you started to decline their offers of going out.
There was no point in forcing yourself to go anywhere anymore. It was more convenient to mask yourself as to not cause anymore worry.
But, this one night you decided to go out. Maybe it was to escape the realms that reminded you of your dying relationship. You texted Iwaizumi, it’s been awhile since you clicked on his contact. And of course, no response. Probably didn’t even glance at the notification.
Whatever, you gulped down another shot, your step wobbled slightly. Things did not change, your friends held the same hidden worries for you.
Was it a coincidence that his best friend was there? I mean he was quite the party animal nowadays. His casual, flirty tone ignored by you. Until you voiced heading home early, not wanting to keep your husband waiting. Oikawa’s eyes darkened, he knew something you didn’t.
And that something was met with you when you quietly open the door to your shared apartment. The thumping of your heart was probably louder than the one heard from your shared bed.
Suddenly, your surroundings were starting to blur in your vision. Was it the alcohol? Or have you finally lost it?
Hands shaking, you grasp the golden doorknob. Nothing to lose now, as you swung open the only barrier hiding the ugly truth. A shriek, a barely audible gasp and a sob.
He didn’t even react, he didn’t scramble the way that busty bitch did when she made futile attempts to pick up her clothing and leave. He didn’t even look at your trembling form.
After the woman hastily left your apartment, taking your dignity along with her. All you could do is silently stand there, hot tears streaming down your pale complexion. Hajime’s eyes, as always casted down at the sheets he committed great sin in.
You make eye contact with him one last time. It was only a second, yet you saw it all. All the lies he hid, the hatred he held for you. He hid it so well, and you were a fool to not notice how obvious it was.
No more, you ran out of the apartment in the same fashion that woman he indulged with did.
Days passed. Weeks as well. No apologies, no contact, no moments of crossings, nothing. This is what your marriage has come too. Months of drowning in tears and alcohol.
The feeling of worthlessness, ugliness, everything negative consumed your being during this dark time. Your phone untouched, flooded with texts and calls from friends and family. But you didn't have the energy to respond back with empty lies. It didn’t matter, out all of those messages his name never popped up.
How could he do this to you? How could he love you to the point of marriage only to ignore you til the downfall? How could he steal everything away from you like this? Your first kiss, your first time, your hand in marriage. And to just take that all away and leave you with absolutely nothing but heartache and painful thoughts.
You pondered this, who knows how long you will continue too. And as you scroll down your social media feed for the first time in awhile, Oikawa’s constant post flooded your timeline, one particular caught your eye. A candid selfie of the pretty setter, your ex-husband and a girl clad in a white sundress and sun hat. The girl had perfect wavy, long brown hair that complimented her hazelnut eyes. A body of a goddess and a beautiful smile. Her delicate and dainty arms wrapped around the bicep of your ex-lover.
Hajime’s face was caught off guard, yet overall he did not seem the least bit effected by the events that happened just months ago.
It broke you, why was he happier now without you? Though he left you all alone to wallow in your own sadness and selfishness.
You did not get it, and you never will. As you sobbed deeply into your arms on that cold night, the stars shone brightly into the room barely enveloping your quivering body, all you could ask yourself is where did it all go wrong?
──── ∗ ⋅◈⋅ ∗ ────
a/n: idk abt y’all but i think the most painful heartbreak is watching someone fall out of love with u. but once again thank you for reading my blogs you guys :’) i seriously cannot thank you enough

“I GUESS I’M JUST A PLAY DATE TO YOU.”
previous ❀ next ❀ series masterlist
𝟐𝟒. it’s always been you
𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬: kicked out of her home with no place to go, y/n is forced to move into her family friend’s home, who coincidentally is also the family of tsukishima kei, the boy who denied her confession.
Your eyes still sting when you wake up.
You had no idea how long you had been asleep, but it must’ve not been for very long since it was still dark outside. You heard Yachi softly snoring next to you on the futon, and Kiyoko’s light breathing from her bed. You rubbed your still puffy eyes as you felt around for your phone, turning it on to see the time.
3:15am
89 missed calls from Oikawa Tooru.
72 missed calls from Tsukishima Kei.
632 unread texts.
You underestimated the wave of notifications that would sweep your phone after the party, so you had decided to just turn it off altogether, too distraught from tonight’s events to even manage to look at your phone.
The texts were from friends and strangers alike, some asking you how you were, some wanting more information about what happened. You spent the next few minutes deleting any unwanted texts, and more importantly ignoring the texts and calls from Kei and Tooru.
Your heart clenched whenever your eyes skimmed over your notifications and you spotted Kei and Tooru’s names. Your head was still foggy with exhaustion from sobbing earlier that you couldn’t even begin to describe the betrayal you felt with Oikawa, and not to mention whatever the hell you felt for Kei.
You rubbed your eyes in an attempt to stop the tears from resurfacing, only to wipe away stray mascara still clinging to your eyes. Great, you forgot to wash off your makeup too.
You quietly rolled off the futon, quietly creeping to the bathroom making sure not to wake up Yachi and Kiyoko.
As you entered the bathroom, you were greeted by your reflection in the mirror. Your face was puffy from crying with your eyes still rimmed red. Half of your makeup was cried off, the rest smeared across your face. You looked as much of a wreck as you felt.
You scavenged around Kiyoko’s bathroom for some makeup wipes and face wash, thankfully finding some in the cabinet. You spent the next few minutes cleaning yourself up to a presentable state.
You splashed water on your face, the cool water relieving your eyes. You looked back up at yourself, glad that you atleast didn’t look like a mess now (physically anyway, emotionally was another issue). You exhaled in relief, and got yourself ready to climb back into bed.
Then your phone buzzed, Oikawa’s caller ID flashing on your screen.
Your hand paused on the bathroom doorknob, trying to subside any urge to pick up and answer the call. Do not answer, do not answer, you repeated in your head, hoping the mantra stuck.
You knew you shouldn’t answer. But how couldn’t you?
With a shaky hand, you picked up.
“Y/N, oh thank god-“ Oikawa said shakily into the phone, you could tell he had been crying.
“What do you want?” You muttered softly, as to not wake your friends in the other room, but more so you couldn’t bring yourself to speak strongly.
“Can we talk? Please? I need to explain.”
“Fine, you have two minutes.”
“No, no, I want to explain myself in person.”
“Tooru, it’s 3am.”
“Y/N, please.”
You paused. What possible explanation could Oikawa give you? I’m sorry I ruined your reputation numerous times? I’m sorry I nearly ruined your relationship with Kei? I’m sorry I lied to you for months? But the only reason resentment didn’t entirely consume you was because this was Tooru, your best friend.
“Fine,” you spat, “I’ll meet you at the park by your house.”
Without another word, you hung up.
You quietly left the bathroom, hoping not to wake Yachi and Kiyoko who were still soundly asleep next door. You carefully crept your way downstairs, and slid out the front door. You shot Kiyoko a text in case she woke up to your empty futon.
3:42am
You: I’m going to meet Oikawa.
The only company you had on your walk to the park were your thoughts, leaving you to replay the party, Oikawa, and Kei. With all that had happened with Oikawa, you hadn’t even processed what Kei had done at the party yet.
Honestly? It scared you. You had never seen Kei act so angry before, even when he thought you were the one who told MiyagiTea that you were living together. That was bitter and resentful; what Kei had done at the party was rage. The way Kei had looked at Oikawa made your blood run cold, you geniunely believed he was going to murder Oikawa had you not stepped in.
Had he been that infuriated by Oikawa? But a small thought buzzed in the back of your head, maybe he had done that for you.
You felt how he relaxed under your grip when you tugged at his shirt as an attempt to stop him from totally beating Oikawa, and the way his gaze softened when he turned around to face you. Had you coaxed him out of his anger?
You shook away your wishful thinking, knowing you were only getting your hopes up. He said it himself, there’s no way he would ever have feelings for you. But still, you couldn’t help but mull over how Kei had softened against you.
Before long, you made it to the park where Oikawa was waiting.
Your stomach lurched at the sight of him, the memories of the party replaying in your mind.
Oikawa was MiyagiTea. He had lied to you.
“Y/N,” he breathed, “I didn’t think you’d actually come.”
Oikawa looked as much of a wreck as you did, his usually bright eyes were red rimmed, dark bags under his eyes. Had he stayed up all night because of you? You almost let the worry wash over you, but you remembered why you were here. You wanted answers.
“Of course I did,” you muttered, “I want to know why.”
“Why?” He repeated, confused. Was he fucking serious right now? You clenched your fists, nearly wincing at the way your nails pierced your skin.
“Why the fuck you lied to me!” You snapped, the accumulated anger finally boiling over. “That stupid account has done nothing but hurt me! Why the fuck would you do this?”
Oikawa shakily sighed, collecting himself.
“At first, I started it as a joke, a stupid gossip account, but then it went too far-” He choked out, tears threatening his eyes, “I hated seeing you and Tsukishima together, so I used it to try and keep you two apart.”
“Apart? Why would you want us-”
“Isn’t it obvious?” He bitterly chuckled.
“Tooru, you’re not making any sense-”
“Because I’m in love with you!” Oikawa snapped.
Your voice faltered. What?
“Everyday I had to see you and Tsukishima together, wishing that were me, do you know how much that hurt, Y/N?”
Your voice felt like gravel in your throat, the words caught in your throat, unable to come out.
“I wanted to be the one you thought of, I wanted to be the one with you. I didn’t want to be second place.” He said, choking back a sob.
“Tooru-”
Your words burned leaving your throat. Your head was spinning. You felt like you were choking.
“Y/N, It’s always been you,” he croaked, “I’m so sorry I ever hurt you, I swear, from this day forward, I’ll never hurt you again, I’ll be better, I just want you to be mine, I love you-”
“Tooru, stop,” you choked out.
It was too much. You could barely hear Oikawa anymore against the pounding in your chest. All you could feel was the burn in your throat as you desperately needed to choke out something, anything. You needed to leave.
“Y/N, hear me out-”
“Oikawa, please!” You cried, the tears you shed earlier tonight returning.
The use of his last name instead of his first name made him flinch and your tears made him stepped back from you. You exhaled, relieving in the space he put.
“Just let me think, okay?” You whispered.
“Okay,” he muttered, unable to meet your eyes. “Just know, I’m so sorry Y/N.”
You turned away, walking away from the park, leaving Oikawa standing with his heart torn in two, and yours as well.
𝐟𝐮𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭: kiyoko and yachi woke up and found y/n gone.

TW: arguments, long distance relationship, cheating and betrayal, swear words.
2. “When did you stop loving me?”
61. “You don’t smile anymore.”
┏━━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━━┓
You had known these boys for ages. Looking at Oikawa and Iwaizumi made you feel like you were home. Iwaizumi, the man that would send you into the heavens and make you feel safe beyond any amount of doubt. You don’t remember a time when you weren’t in love with him. You don’t remember a time when you weren’t with your best friends.
But recently things are different. University made everything hard and it was like a wall had been driven between you and your happiness. The first year was the hardest, you would call Iwaizumi every night or every other night in the pain of being so far away from someone you loved so much. You’d keep things under control though, you never wanted to worry him. You thought you knew him, that if you exposed how you really felt he’d march down there in an instant. But then somewhere around a month or two into this, he stopped answering. He’d still text you in the mornings, so you didn’t give it much thought and instead turned your attention to your best friend, Oikawa.
Both of them were on the other side of the world from you. Oikawa was away in Argentina, and he still made time to talk to you. Iwaizumi was all the way in California, just doing university and not a university student and a professional volleyball team like Oikawa was. He was a completely different person than you used to know.
“What’s wrong, Y/N?” Oikawa looked over at you after about a 5-minute long pause of silence in your conversation. You were staring at your phone. You took in a deep sigh. Iwaizumi hadn’t texted in two days.
“Nothing, I’m sure it’s nothing.” You brushed it off, trying your hardest to hide those tears that threatened to sting you and fall down.
“You can tell me, right? Is it something at school? Have you made any friends?” Oikawa asked you. Reaching his hand out and laying his head against his bicep.
“A few.” You shrugged.
“Y/N-chan, I don’t want to sound like Iwa, but I’m worried about you. You don’t smile anymore. Have you thought about going home for a few days?” He offered as a possible solution.
“I don’t want to go home if you guys aren’t there.” You grumbled, “But I was Hajime’s thanksgiving break is coming up next month, I was thinking about surprising him since I know he’ll have a week off with nothing to do.”
“I’m offended you aren’t coming to visit me!” Oikawa whined.
“I will when you finally give yourself a break!” You teased, “Plus, honestly he hasn’t texted me in days. I know it sounds stupid, we’ve been together for years, but I feel like I need to see him. Something just doesn’t feel right.”
“I think you should. But maybe you should tell him you’re coming before you go?” Oikawa suggested. Fiddling with his hair in between his index finger and thumb.
“No way, that takes all the fun out! You said it yourself you hadn’t seen me smile recently. This will give me a reason to smile. Once I go there and we figure everything out, I’ll have my reasons again. Just please don’t tell him! I don’t want to get his hopes up and if I suddenly can’t afford it or something then he’d be disappointed.” You begged your friend, and he solemnly nodded before needing to leave.
You kept to your plan. You got on that long flight to California, landing alone and getting a uber to your boyfriend's apartment. You were so thankful you guys swapped sharing locations before leaving, it made this so much easier. You got to the door and fixed yourself nice and pretty before pulling out your phone and recording. You wanted to keep his face of surprise forever.
You knocked on the door, but the person who was surprised was you. A woman opened the door in a towel. Your face dropping.
“Is this Iwaizumi’s apartment?” You had one last shred of hope in you, you had one last string of hope in you. Please, anything but this.
“Oh my god! Wait you’re Y/N right? Hajime and Tooru always talk about you.” She smiled widely, offering her hand to you, “I’m Jess, I’m his girlfriend. He didn’t say you were coming by.”
“Babe, who is it?” You heard the love of your life's voice coming from the shower. You stopped recording on your phone.
You couldn’t control yourself, you pushed the woman in front of you to the side before she could answer for you. You ran into his bathroom, your tear-filled eyes meeting his through the shower curtain.
“Surprise.” You said your heart being smashed to pieces on the ground as you meet his face. His eyebrows raised, his body limp. He knew he was caught.
“Y/N.. What are you doing here? No, no wait.” You tried not listening to him, you walked away. Not wanting him to see your tears fall anymore, he didn’t deserve that side of you anymore.
“Wait, who the fuck are you?” Jess asked you on your way out the door.
“She’s my fucking girlfriend.” Iwaizumi called from behind you. Following you into the street in nothing but his gym shorts.
“Stop, Hajime! I can’t even fucking look at you!” You couldn’t help but raise your voice.
“Y/N, please I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. You weren’t supposed to find out like this–” He grabbed you by the wrist but you just ripped it away from him.
“Don’t touch me! Are you fucking serious? What did you think I would say? I knew you were distant, I didn’t know if it was the timezone or what but now I understand.” It took all the strength in you to stand and face him. Your body running on the adrenaline of the betrayal and anger that coursed through you. “You fucking asshole. 4 years for it to end like this? I loved you so much. I wanted to marry you! You couldn’t have at least broken up with me like a man when you find a new girlfriend.”
“She’s not my girlfriend– I don’t know why she told you that, babe I don’t want this to end–” Iwaizumi tried coming up with absolutely anything to say to you. The truth was he hadn’t thought about what to say at this moment. He’d replayed it in his head multiple times when he laid with other girls, at some point he convinced himself he could get away with it. That maybe he’d never have to tell you. Obviously, that dream came down in a crumbling wave of hurt and disappointment.
“Don’t you dare call me the same thing you called her. Like it even matters if you called her your girlfriend or not! It’s obviously been going on for some time. So tell me, Iwaizumi, when did you stop loving me? I need to hear it so I stop being so blind in the future.” You choked out the last bit of your words, tears fell into your mouth. You were sure you looked the ugliest you’d ever looked. It embarrassed you, but you needed to know. After this, you’d never see him again.
“I–I can’t answer that.” Iwaizumi was crying in front of you. Rubbing his eyes on the back of his wrists. “I still love you–”
“No you don’t. Iwaizumi, you feel guilty. That’s not love. I want to know how long, was she ever there when I was calling you because of how badly I missed your voice.” You refused his confession. His eyes widened, you couldn’t tell if it was the realization or the way it hurt to be rejected by you. Either way, his silence was enough to answer for you at that time.
“Did Tooru know?” You asked next to his lack of response.
“What?”
“You’re girlfriend said you and Tooru talk about me a lot. So both the closest people in my life lied to me, right? They lied to my face.” You asked him again, wanting to speed this up and get the hell out of there. He hung his head. You let out one last hiccup of pain.
“I asked him to, I told him I would tell you myself. Don’t be mad at him–” Iwaizumi begged you this time but it was too late.
“If he were a real friend of mine he should’ve told me, but he chose his side. When you stopped answering I was on the facetime with him every day. He had plenty of chances. You’re too late, Hajime. Tell Oikawa that I’m never speaking to either of you again. I’m blocking your numbers and I’m going back to Japan the next chance I can get.” You backed away, your head hanging. You didn’t know if you had any more hot tears to shed. They burned your cheeks. You hung your head down, trying to drop them onto the street instead of on your cheeks.
“Y/N... Please...” He begged weakly, his arm extending to touch your shoulder. He tried to bring you into his chest but you put your hands out to his chest. Your skin felt like it was going to fall off, he didn’t give you the comforting feeling of love and home and happiness anymore.
“No. This is the last time you’re ever seeing me.” You said it, looking into his eyes one final time. You could never do this, you felt like everything had been flushed down a clogged toilet. How would you ever move on from this?
“Where are you going?” He asked you, trailing at your heels.
“Away from you.” You spat, pulling out your phone. You were trying to look for an uber in the area.
“No, please let me take you somewhere safe, this isn’t a good neighborhood! And I know you got a C in English. Please, I’ll protect you, even if I need to follow from further away or something, I can call you someone and we can talk again tomorrow–” Iwaizumi was really trying, he pulled out his own phone and tried to look for something in his contacts list but you refused.
“That’s coming from the person who hurt me the most. You have no place in my life anymore. Just leave me the hell alone.” You said this without looking behind you, “Goodbye, Hajime.”

XIV. The Game (Pt. 2)
Learning to Love Masterlist
< Prev. . Next >
The boys were doing so well — you were so proud. No matter who landed or was blocked, you were cheering. All the time spent with the Aoba Joshai boys had made you realize how hard they worked, how much that they all deserved to go to nationals.
You wish it didn’t have to be only one team or the other. Your poor boys. Watching Karasuno take the lead had you cheering for them and curious as to why your boyfriend hadn’t been put in yet.
Watching them out him in, though, you didn’t know whether to cheer on your boyfriend or slump your shoulders at the knowledge that Karasuno wasn’t going to know what hit them. As hot-headed as your boyfriend could get, causing him to make an increasing amount of mistakes, he was good and he could score a good number of points, just so long as he kept a level head.
When Karasuno took that first set, you cheered for them with a wide smile. They all manage to give you a thumbs up in acknowledgment before turning to Ukai. Then you look towards where your boyfriend stood, moving in the stands, so you’re pretty much standing over the bunch, speaking towards them. “I’m proud of each of you. Keep it up. You guys are going to take this next set.” You nod, before glancing down at Kentarō. “I’m proud of you. I love you.” You tell him.
Kentarō gives you the smallest smile, a proud look on his face at your praise. “I love you, too.”
When the next set started, it was easy to take note that Aoba Joshai was planning on taking things into a third set and winning this one. And they did.
In the beginning, Seijoh had a good lead and it wasn’t until nearly set point when you watched them put Tadashi in, cheering loudly for your pinch-server brother. Seeing his jump-float go so well had you jumping up and down happily — that was your brother. With that, Tadashi pulled the game ahead for Karasuno. Though, Oikawa’s serves bested them in the end.
Though, into the third set, you noticed Kyotani was beginning to lose his sense of previous calm as spikes got past their defense. You watch as he’s subbed out, locking eyes with Yahaba briefly, before just nodding a bit, then looking towards your boyfriend and flashing him a soft smile.
You swore — Tanaka had been trying to piss the boy off. It pissed you off a bit, as well, but you were trying to just breath and ignore it, then looking back towards Yahaba and your boyfriend. As much as you tensed at the aggression, you could see that he was calming down at whatever Yahaba was saying.
Watching them sub him back in was a relief, though it seemed it wasn’t enough, after all was said and done. Because with one last spike from Hinata, one Oikawa tried to dig up, the game was all over. Your breath escaped you. A mixture of happiness for your own boys surged through you... Though, tears welled up in your eyes as you watched the way the Aoba Joshai boys all let their expressions freeze and fall apart.
While Yaichi and Saeko celebrated beside you, you watched with a conflicted expression. You smile towards the Karasuno, loudly cheering for them. You would wait until after to shed any tears for your boyfriend and friends.
As you saw them leaving, you were quick to leave the stands, nearly running to make it outside to see them. You nearly slide as you make it down to see them, stopping in front of Oikawa, heading the team. Looking at them all, some looked away from you or hung their heads so they didn’t have to deal with anymore tears. Kyotani walked forward, gaze a bit harsher than usual, though you narrowed your eyes.
“Kentarō, you better watch your tone with me.” You warn, the male quickly realizing his own aggression. He looks at you nearly like a kicked puppy, opening his arms for you. You step forward and wrap your arms around his torso, his head falling into your shoulder. His own shoulders slump in exhaustion and defeat as he leans into you. Soon, you can feel a few drops on your shoulders — tears he was working to hide from his team.
You gently drag you nails over his back in a soothing manor. “Look, you guys... It hurts now, it’s an open wound. Don’t rub salt in it by thinking about all of the mistakes you might have made. Because you know what? The other team made mistakes to. For most of you, this isn’t your last year. Toru, you’re going to do great things. You already know that, but even still. Issei, Takahiro, and Hajime... Seeing you four off this year is going to hurt... But... I’ll be looking after them for you. And when they make it to nationals next year, it’ll all be thanks to you guys making sure they never stopped working.
“You all did amazing. I’m gonna miss being your manager.” Your words are a mere whisper at this point. Toru was the only third year who’d managed to keep his tears hidden, standing tall and looking away from you to stop himself from crying.
“Well, little cutie, don’t you always know what to say?” He chuckles. “Are you riding the bus with us?”
You laugh under your breath, blinking a bit to keep from crying. “I’ve got to go and congratulate my brother, Tsukishima, and the other boys and let them know. But yeah, if that’s an offer, I’ll happily ride home with you guys.”
Kyotani separates from you with a quiet sniffle. Bringing your hands to his cheeks, you wipe his tears away. “Do you have to go?” He whispers to you, need clear in his voice.
“I’ll be back...” You lean in to kiss his lips briefly, before separating to walk to where the other team was stationed.
It was only thirty minutes before you went back to find the Seijoh bus, finding Kyotani standing beside it as he waits for you. He swallows as he sees you, already about to lose composure again.
Wordlessly, he takes your hand abd pulls you onto the bus with him, finding a seat across from Yahaba and Watari, where he sits and pulls you into his lap. Half of the team had already fallen asleep and you wouldn’t be too long after. He leans against the side of the bus, letting his legs stretch over the seats as he pulls your back against his chest.
His head falls to your shoulder again. “If I hadn’t lost it — we would’ve won.”
“If they hadn’t had you, they couldn’t have done so well against Karasuno.” You pick his head up with a hand on his cheek. “You did amazingly. You are a great player. I’m proud of you.”
His eyes soften as he looks into yours. He leans in and kisses you, his hold on you tightening. Tears fall from his eyes, “You’re too good for me.”
You hum, hardly able to pull away, even then, it’s hardly enough to say you did pull away, lips still brushing against his. “Hmm — I beg to differ. But I’ve got as long as we continue dating to change your mind.” You breath, using your grip on his shirt to pull him into another kiss.
You and Kyotani didn’t fall asleep, no matter how tired he was, you both sat and talked on the ride home.
That night, you treated Tadashi and Tsukki to dinner. Kyotani joined
Kyotani also came to help you cheer for your brother and Tsukki for the game against Shiratorizawa
Poor babies 🥺 I hated rewatching that game for the sole reason I had to watch the boys break down again. I hope you guys enjoyed! 💕 You all better be eating, drinking water, and taking care of yourselves!
I hope you guys are all taking care of yourselves! I love you guys. Thank you for all your support on Learning to Love! Remember, you are loved, appreciated, and cared for.

Song: Car Window by Thomas Headon
Summary: After the memorable defeat of Aoba Johsai to Karasuno, Iwaizumi meets his lover at an uncanny moment.
Pairings: Hajime Iwaizumi x fem! reader
Word count: 3.7k
Genre: fluff
A/N: PART 2 IS COMING FOR THE KATSUKI ONE MY MIND IS JUST HELLA CONFUSED AND IWA HAS BEEN INVADING MY THOUGHTS
It's quite hilarious how life can reward your dullest moments with an unexpected blessing. A few people have experienced such a thing, sometimes the blessing comes in success or a present from somebody you longed for.
Usually, 60 seconds were easy to endure and its a time you'd like to pass by too quickly knowing what magic or milestone was bound to happen in such a short time anyway? Though there are times where it feels like it holds much more seconds especially when you're working out or either in a really long meeting you hated.
Then again, who are you to underestimate the endless possibilities that were to happen in that time span? Maybe you'd receive a random lottery ticket and you know, you can win or even have the chance to meet a celebrity.
But what could have possibly prepared Iwaizumi for the best 60 seconds of his life?
Here he was, sulking in the sorrow that was brought to his team by the defeat of the match between them and Karasuno, the ticket to nationals slipped away from their fingers. Who was to deny the tears they've shed once they entered the bus, it was their safe space to lean on each other and they spent the rest of the ride comforting each other. All throughout the bus you could hear sniffles and Oikawa trying to hold his team together.
Iwaizumi was seated next to the open window as he listens to Oikawa being the encouraging captain he is, the setter grasps the heart of the team feeling comfort in a while, even Iwa admitted that his friend brought him back to the light.
He had his earphones in, enough of the silly comments his seatmate, Oikawa, has made. He has his arm leaned on the little edge of the window, with his chin resting on his forearm. His eyes desperately wanted to close from his previous crying but he fears once he closes his eyes he'd be brought back to the moment where the ball wasn't saved, to the doubt that floods his mind wondering if he even deserves to be their ace. Gladly with the help of Tooru, this thought was dismissed and now all that Iwaizumi was doing was staring at the sight in front of him.
He takes this time to reflect on what he could do to enhance what he lacked during that match. He wonders if his reaction time was too slow or the power in each spike was unbalanced. Did he even trust himself completely when he played? If he didn't, why did he think it was the right time to question his abilities when there was something at stake?
He sighs to himself as he removes his earphones, knowing not even music was helping him ease his mind. Oikawa has fallen asleep beside him, the setters head leaning on Iwaizumis back. Even if he wanted to push away the boys head, he knew Oikawa was tired of putting on his composed captain facade, so he let the poor boy rest.
Then he hears blaring music from the car opposite to him making his head come upward a bit as he glares at the car, disturbing his triumph at peace. A red light comes on and he rolls his eyes thinking of how he was going to sustain the noise.
But then, that's where he wished 60 seconds lasted forever.
Right before him was the noisy car with one window open revealing a sight that makes his heart flutter and his mind frantically running in circles. He sees a girl with her eyes closed singing her lungs out while she finishes the note with a smile and a giggle, once she opens them, the afternoon light beaming down on her delightful orbs enhancing it's hues, even giving her skin a glass like finish with how healthy it looked, her cheeks painted a shade of pink that were like the flowers that reminded him of Valentine's.
And then these stunning pair of eyes, landed on his love struck ones.
He feels the way his heart registers how lucky he was to gaze at such beauty, like a sunset with all the delightful colors or the overall atmosphere of spring, the feeling of it being so foreign to him but nevertheless, he accepts this new found giddy feeling. He watches how she leans her cheek on her hand and maybe then he should've felt the way cupid's bows ran through him so easily.
Unfortunately, the panic sets in.
With such grace was ahead of him, he worried about his own sake. He wonders if his hair looked presentable, and didn't portray how stressed he was because of the game. He wished he didn't look shiny from all the sweat and tears. He suddenly feels the urge to rummage through his bag and comb his hair and fix his appearance, Oikawa would've teased him for acting so foolish for the girl. But what else can he do?
Admiration and relationships wasn't included in his dictionary since the only thing he looked forwards to was volleyball and his studies. Being in a situation where he wasn't able to act quickly with how flustered he was, brought him down completely. He knew in his games that whatever he did would affect the team in multiple ways but he counted on his teammates so that every action would be returned with a positive outcome.
Now is the opposite.
This could have so many outcomes. Maybe one second there'd be a guy beside her wrapping his arm around her and flipping him off for looking, then theres rejection lingering in the air. Maybe she wasn't into guys? Maybe she has a specific standard and that he wasn't hitting her expectations? Possibly just gotten of a relationship and wasn't interested in dating right away?
Oh god, you've got to stop. He thinks to himself.
A tiny encounter made his mind collapse with so many ideas. He couldn't even mutter a word to her, then his mind leads him to think it'd quickly lead to dating, god maybe even a relationship. He's had zero idea on what her name is so how can he come to conclusions so quickly? He knows he needed to stop asking these unanswerable questions before he could mess up his first attempt to converse with her.
Then with a gentle smile from this gorgeous stranger, he feels the warmth that surrounds him as he returns the smile to her as if it was an instinct. After that he settles for a tiny breakdown, confused to why he did that.
He turns his head to the light noticing how 15 seconds were only left out of this encounter. Hastily, he wanted to ask for her name or at least build up the courage to shout what he wanted to say, though he was left utterly speechless. He couldn't possibly gain that high of an esteem to just speak out to a stranger without blurting out how attractive he found her to be.
But he needed to try or else this moment was bound to be something he'd regret.
"Iwa-chan!"
Oikawas voice surprised him as the setter stretches with a smile on his lips, from the movement he lets his arm rest on the aces shoulder making Iwaizumi panic and irritated at the loss of time.
Meanwhile the young girl continues to stare at the man who has held his gaze the entire time they were there. You see the way his features were all amazingly sculpted, every crevice, every inch, to say that he was handsome was an understatement. Judging from his attire, you could tell he was an athlete, also with how the bags from behind him was shown. You also saw his reaction to meeting you and you wished he didn't see yours.
You felt embarassed when he saw you sing, you weren't ready to face a boy like that and to think that you gave off such a random first impression. You hated the way the sun was shining on you making you think it showed the harsh texture of your skin, not to mention how blinded your eyes were after it. You were flustered to say the least but your eyes couldn't dare to leave his.
Something about him was so pleasing. It makes you come up with dozens of scenarios to who this boy was. Is a girlfriend involved? Is he the type of boy you'd read on a novel? You smile to yourself at how silly the idea was. Usually in novels, movies or books, each meeting was distinct than the other. There are always the unique encounters, then there are the completely weird ones but for you this was somewhat the sweetest thing you've stumbled upon.
Although maybe falling in love under a red light wasn't always the ideal, to the two of you it seemed to fit.
You see brown locks behind him and this makes the pretty boy show a shocked reaction. Shit, is that his boyfriend? You thought. Your eyes lock with this new figure and he happily waves at you catching you off guard. You wave awkwardly, anxious of who this man was.
"Gosh you are incredibly pretty but alas this man likes you, his name is Iwa-"
The vehicle speeds off before he could even finish his sentence. Iwaizumi turns to the setter as Oikawa trembles in fear as he feels flames surround him, the anger irradiating from the spiker. Oikawa lets out a scream as Iwa leaves a smack to the boys head as Tooru whines caressing his throbbing head from the pain. Iwaizumi sinks in his seat, letting the emotions course through him making his lips form a line.
Too many things happened all at once. Oikawa basically hitting on her but suddenly half introducing him? How did he even know? She's gone, he thinks. He lets out a displeased sigh shaking his head while biting his lip, disliking how embarassment and regret was mixing perfectly. He hated how Oikawa had the chance to even talk to her before their chances were dust. Oikawa even managed to let out a compliment he wanted to say but the words were taken from him.
"I'm sorry okay! Don't hit me again please!" Oikawa begs as Iwaizumi lets out a scoff as the setter takes in his expressions. Slumped in his chair with arms crossed at his chest, eyebrows furrowed, and a familiar twist to his lips when he was frustrated in a game. Oikawa chuckles slightly connecting the pieces from the previous events.
"So what? You've lost the love of your life, Iwa-chan?" Oikawa teases making Iwaizumi raise a hand as Oikawa dodges it using his bag as a shield. He thought it was just a coincidence before. He woke up when Iwaizumi was plotting his approach and he happened to catch a glimpse of the two staring at each other like nothing else mattered. He questions if Iwaizumi was actually serious of his feelings for a stranger but when he sees the genuine smile that he gives her, he was surprised.
With an unforgiven action, he just chose to try to introduce him knowing Iwa would've never done it as fast as he could. Although in Iwaizumis eyes, Oikawa flirted with her but in reality he just wanted to help knowing maybe someday, this encounter would bring him happiness. Even if the girl would be miles away, he knew that the impact of them meeting was something that would cloud Iwaizumis thoughts on a daily.
Oikawa notices how Iwaizumi would inspect every face in the street or crowd just to find the girl his eyes have fallen in love with. There were many unsuccessful times where he's mistaken her for someone else and he despises it. Oikawa thinks about how he can help his poor teammate and a bulb appears above his head as he continuously taps the spikers shoulder.
"Have you ever considered a dating app, Iwa-chan?" Iwaizumi blushes at the question but he shakes his head as Tooru takes Iwa's phone and ran to a corner unlocking it. Iwaizumi rushes to find him as Oikawa lets out a gasp and a cackle. The spiker finds him and immediately grabs him by the collar of his shirt yet the setter couldn't careless.
"WHAT IS IT YOU DINGBAT."
"Seems like you're the one who's a step ahead of me, Iwa-chan!" Oikawa exclaims making Iwaizumi furrow his eyebrows but once his eyes settle on the dating app that was open from his phone, heat rushes to his cheeks shading it pink. He puts down Oikawa with a shove before pulling his phone away from the boy.
"So what.." He whispers as Oikawa lets out another laugh, wiping his eyes. Iwaizumi hids the phone in his pocket, locking it. He continues to walk leaving a sigh as Oikawa runs to catch up with him.
"Well don't be shy now. Any success?" Oikawa asks, trying to ease down his playful tone. Iwaizumi turns his head to him, before huffing in defeat.
"Nothing. No one can ever come close to her."
"Maybe she's trying to find you too?" Iwaizumi lets out a scoff. He wished it was true. He didn't think he was the type to be memorable, the guy you'd find yourself dreaming of. He thought he was a mere average boy and that there was always going to be someone better. He desperately wants to meet you but are you really putting effort like he is?
Was it just him who felt a connection?
They weren't put in a universe where it was easy to find your soulmate. The moment where everything fits perfectly wasn't always guaranteed in their situation. Why did they have to meet at a red light? They could've met at a cafe after his practice so he didn't need to worry about the time or how he was going to approach her. He swore if ever he met her properly again, there'd be no hesitation.
For you, you've also searched for this boy. Only hearing a fraction of his name so you couldn't really play detective with a tiny lead. Although the boy that complimented looked familiar, but maybe you were just mistaken? You've downloaded multiple dating apps like him but whenever there was a match, they never looked like the pretty boy you saw. You would recognize him from anywhere knowing his features were very much embedded in your memory. If only their bus hadn't sped off too quickly, maybe then you would've gotten his name. Although his name might just be a crumb in your way to find him.
-
"He can't be any better than me, that I'm sure of." Your little brother exclaims as he flips the magazine page. You sighed resting your cheek and chin on the palm of your hand as you watch your brother curse the man on the magazine. You tilt your head, curious to the envy he had. Your brother was well into volleyball and he usually asks for you to buy him the latest volleyball magazine so he could look up to whoever was on it but his overconfident comments had you laughing every time.
Once your eyes landed on the page, you sat up immediately grabbing the magazine and holding it close to yourself.
Oikawa Tooru. You read.
You take in the way he looks and then you specifically remembered a certain face. Your eyes widen in realization that this was the man who complimented you. The man that could lead you to him. Your eyes scan all the trivia about the well known player and finally finding the team and school he was on. Aoba Johsai.
You immediately grab your phone, typing furiously searching for the said school. You click on their website seeing the latest news about the school. There was a certain article that had an eye catching picture.
It was a group photo of their volleyball team and your eyes landed on Oikawa himself, founding out that he was the captain of this successful team also being a setter. As your eyes scanned through every member, your heart nearly dropped when you saw him. There he was stood next to two other members, smirking at the camera. Like a fool, you let out a squeal, exhilarated that you've found him. You scrolled further finally knowing the names of each member.
Iwaizumi Hajime.
You smile to yourself as you read his name, finding it pretty the way it suited him. You read that he was a spiker and so called ace in the team. With this found information, your heart was jumping in different directions. Your mind was bringing up multiple scenarios of seeing him in his element and that makes heart bubbles appear behind you.
How perfect. You think.
You knew the location of the school and you wonder if it was right to visit. You tried to push back the idea of rejection but maybe it was a sign for you to stop assuming and acting all stalkery. You let go of your phone, pacing around the room deciding on the better option. Visit him and get your hopes up when he doesn't even miss you or visit him and end up having the chance you both missed. Too many what ifs and what abouts rushed through your mind, but trying isn't a bad thing to do.
-
"I'm so fucking dumb, I can't believe myself."
You groan to yourself as you walk around. You gained the courage to finally visit Aoba Johsai, where your little volleyball prince was attended at. Unfortunately, your lack of understanding directions brought you to this poor situation making you look like a lost puppy, desperate to call for help but the thought of people judging you just because you were lost haunts you.
You grew more and more impatient as time passes, counting on your phone as a GPS but honestly nothing was working when your brain couldn't comprehend how you got lost when you followed the directions. You sigh in annoyance.
You took the time today to look as good as you can make yourself, ready to face him. Yet when everything was all set for you, it went downhill just because of some directions. You shut your phone off, frustrated the way the voice kept repeating where to turn. So you run your fingers through your soft hair as you decided to move on your own.
"So where do you wanna eat?" Oikawa asks as he stretches while walking. Iwaizumi lets out a yawn as he gives the boy a shrug as a response. Oikawa checks on his phone scrolling to look at some places they've yet to eat at. Iwaizumi inspects his bags if he's packed everything. He notices his water bottle was missing and he mutters that he would be right back, going back to the gym to retrieve his bottle. Oikawa hears nothing though as he giggles at the compliments his fans have left him.
You bend down tying your shoes as a stranger passes by. You stood right up dusting off the dirt in your knees. As the universe gasps, realizing that the person who went pass you was Iwaizumi himself. Yet they didn't bother to make ends meet as you two walk in different directions.
Oikawa raised his cellphone trying to get a decent angle as he checks himself through it. The lighting was perfect for him and once he was about to snap the photo he notices a person behind him. His eyes widen as his looks at you as you fiddle with your bag. Oikawa sets down the phone as he turns to you with his mouth open. His head turns frantically, trying to search for Iwaizumi. It's her. Oikawa thinks. He takes a good look at you once more just so he can confirm his thoughts if you were truly the girl Iwaizumi was talking about. He found himself familiar at your features as you took a turn, escaping his presence not even knowing Oikawa was stood a few inches away from you.
Oikawa couldn't hold himself together as he lets out a laugh. After it, he turns to the sky with an amused smile before speaking.
"Ah, you're too funny. I'll let them find themselves."
Out of all the chances they gave you, the two of you were at the same place but was running around each other.
You let out a whine as you see a figure walking with his back facing you, seeing the jacket that the team had on one of the pictures you browsed. You let out a sigh before wiping away the sweat you had on your face, freshening up your appearance. Giving up and finally allowing people to help you, you approach this tall figure, tapping them gently on the shoulder.
"Hello! I-I'm sorry, I just wanted to ask where the Aoba Johsai gym is? I got pretty lost." You says with a light chuckle as the person turns around, revealing the man you've endlessly searched for.
Both of your eyes enlarged at the sight of each other, such at a close proximity as you both scan each others faces, making sure if this was finally the reality they longed for.
It's you.
"H-hajime Iwaizumi?"
Iwaizumi eyebrows furrow, curious to how you found out but this leaves a smile on his lips loving the way it escaped through your mouth. His eyes gave out a soft glance before nodding and extending his hand out.
Your eyes dragged down as you stare at his hand that was deeply waiting for yours. You look up at him once more before smiling with tinted cheeks.
"That's me, and you are?"
"I'm Y/N."
"Nice to finally meet you, pretty red light girl." You blush even more as Iwaizumi lets out a chuckle before you shook his hand, both hearts meeting, as fate was sealed once your hands met. Some might say that Cupid stared at the two of you, relieved you both found your way to each other.
Oikawa turns to look at the two of them as he leans on the wall, shaking his head with a sly smirk.
"Fate huh?"

Maintaining a New Life
Chapter 4 - Blast from the Past
previous | next
Read it on AO3 here
A/N: A little late again. I’ll be better <3
~~~~~~
Laughter echoes across the metallic surfaces of the facility, almost as if Tendou was laughing at you from all angles. Impossibly so, your knuckles clench harder on Kuroo’s shirt and your forehead burns into the skin on his chest. His hands place themselves on your arms, unsure of what to do in this situation.
“No need to hide! We just wanna talk!” Iwaizumi’s jaw flexes when Tendou speaks, safely clicking off on the pistol in hand. Your mind races a thousand thoughts a second as you try and formulate a plan to get everyone out. Oikawa glances over his shoulder for a brief second and sees your position in Kuroo’s arms. He lets a hand release from his own gun and swats your side. The movement causes you to startle, but both Tooru and Kuroo keep you as silent as possible when you shift out of Kuroo’s arms. The former questions you with his eyes, which are now laced with concern as he hasn’t ever really seen you like this before.
Footsteps inch closer and closer, everyone’s heart pounding together to create a cacophony of drums. Oikawa continues to stare into your eyes, practically pleading you to do something as he readjusts his position to hold the gun with both hands once more. Iwaizumi takes a step back and squishes everyone closer together against the cold concrete walls.
You bite your lip to the point where you can taste iron. Releasing Kuroo’s shirt, you fully press yourself against the wall. The two with eyes on you furrow their brows in confusion until they see the faintest blue light build around your form. In a matter of seconds it snaps and splinters off of your figure and the wall is replaced with the parking lot. In the distance, the moonlight shines off of the glossy paint on your car.
“We’re gonna find you one way or another!” The voice sounds much to close and you step out into the parking lot and pull the boys with you, each falling on their asses when you quickly shut the portal and let out a breath you hadn’t realised you were holding. Your hands place themselves on top of your knees, heaving over and taking deep breaths to soothe yourself as each of the guys stand up. Once the beating of your heart slows to a reasonable pace, you turn on your heel and head to the car. Iwaizumi and Oikawa are right on your tail and hop in without question.
Kuroo lags behind the group, confused on the quick turn of events. He has never known you to back out of something so quickly, and he most definitely has never seen that look on your face - a look of concern. It irks him that all of the sudden, right when you all get a lead, or potentially have the killers right in front of you, you turn and run. His legs carry him behind your figure, but his fists clench when you quickly turn the keys in the door and hop in without a second thought.
He stands outside of the car and stares at his reflection through the glass. You turn the ignition and press on the brake, bracing yourself to make a quick getaway, but as you turn to check your surroundings you see Kuroo.
“Kuroo.” Whatever train of thought he was on was derailed. “Get in the car.” Your tone is both harsh but caring as you try and convey the urgency of the situation.
“Why?” He continues to look at himself, but acknowledges your own look of confusion in his peripheral.
“What do you mean ‘why’? We need to get out of here-”
“Why aren’t we stopping them?” His golden irises hold your own in an intensive stare, a competition of wills. The rhythmic drumming of your heart skips a beat at his conviction, but you know better than to force him into this world.
"We can't." Short and simple, you still don't want to lie to him.
The engine fills the silence as it whirs and grumbles under the cool night air. A soft breeze dances through Kuroo’s hair as he continues to hold his gaze against yours. Both of you are set in your choices, stubborn and defiant against the other.
“Kuroo.” Iwaizumi stands next to the passenger door. “Please. Just get in the car and we can explain later.”
“No.” His eyes flicker between yourself and Iwa, but he sheds his jacket and throws it into the car, pulling out the handgun that was tucked into the waist of his pants and turns to face the building. “These guys could be our killers, and they might be planning to kill tonight. If someone dies, then that’s on us.” With one final glance, he turns his head towards you. Your muscles are all tense, knuckles white from clenching the steering wheel so hard and he can see that you're grinding your teeth - a bad habit that he thought you had gotten rid of a while ago. “I can’t- won’t be responsible for someone’s death.”
With that, he heads into the dark night, his silhouette only visible from the dim street lights as he moves swiftly towards the building. Each step he takes causes your body to panic further. He could die. Tendou will take him and torture him for information.
These thoughts race at a thousand miles per second in your head, all the while Oikawa and Iwaizumi see that you’re starting to lose it. They remember when you would get like this, but neither of them were well equipped to help you out of these situations. Oikawa, from the back seat, ever so gently places a hand on your shoulder when he sees that you’ve been blinking your eyes rapidly for a few seconds. You don’t register the feeling, and continue to think about every outcome in which you lose Kuroo. In most cases, it’s for good.
Tooru looks at Hajime, who is still outside of the vehicle, as he chews the inside of his cheek and gives you a squeeze on the shoulder. Hajime pops his knuckles and takes a deep breath. This isn’t just bad in regards to Kuroo going rogue, but the fact that all three of you could get found out. To him, that just means more hiding and relocating or facing the music.
“Y/N.” His voice erupts over the beating in your eardrums, and reflexively you look to Hajime. His eyes try and say what he doesn’t wish to, but he grabs his gun once more through the window of the car and purses his lips.
You’ve worked with these two for so long, that it’s not a challenge to understand what he’s saying. With shaky hands, you turn the keys out of the ignition and scratch at your forehead. Tooru is already out of the car when you shove open the door and stand up. Just as Kuroo had done a few moments prior, you shed your jacket and pull out a similar handgun to what everyone else is sporting.
“So are we going to…?” The taller of the three speaks, his chocolate hair brushing his face in the silent wind.
He’s referring to Tendou and whoever the colleague is, but your priorities lie elsewhere. “No. Main goal is to get Kuroo and get the fuck out. It would be best if they don’t see us at all.” The two nod and cock their guns. You take one last deep breath and start the pursuit.
The three of you jog to the entrance, the door open and footsteps still echoing across the various pieces of metal. You turn to Oikawa as you place your back on the wall, waiting for confirmation that it’s safe enough to go in. He stands next to you with Iwa behind him and takes a second to listen, already having put his gift in use. Nodding once, you quickly head in and look for the nearest spot of cover.
The boys follow behind and place themselves on either side of you, waiting for the next move. This is how it's always been, with you taking the lead and them just knowing how and when to move around you. They’ve spent years learning your tactics and body language in order to work in such a smooth fashion was intense, but pays off in moments like these.
With all of your backs against the cold concrete walls, you whisper to Oikawa. “Can you hear Kuroo?”
He nods and points further into the room, also giving a hand signal that the coast is clear just up ahead. Iwaizumi takes the lead this time, making sure that the bright aqua flash is quick to snap around his form before he takes off. He remains light on his feet as he moves, but consciously makes an effort to shield both of you from any possible dangers.
As the three of you run to the next covered area, you spot a tuft of black hair behind a large machine towards the end of the room. You know that the others saw the same thing. You proceed as before, with Oikawa giving signals and Iwaizumi leading as you try your best to remain calm and focus on the task at hand.
The only thing that distracts you is the vibrant red hair peering over some pipes on the opposite end of the room. Your legs stutter in their movements, and cause Tooru to slam into you. The grunt that escapes both of your lips is booming over what was previously silent, and your reflexes tell you to scatter before Tendou can locate you.
Hajime roughly pulls Oikawa along with him as they head back towards the door, but you scurry off closer to Kuroo and find a small compartment to lodge yourself in.
“Little detectives!” With a lilt in his voice, Tendou sprints over to the previous point of contact and scans the area with keen eyes. Based on the sound, you guess that his partner did not follow him and is still checking the rest of the rooms out. “There’s only so many places you can hide!”
You hold your breath, knowing that you’re much closer to him than the boys. If he finds me, it’s game over. A hand makes its way over your mouth as you try to regulate your frantic heart, as it wants to leap out of your chest and run away.
Only a little ways down from you, Kuroo had heard the grunts but had recognized them as your own. A sigh of relief leaves his lips, thankful that you decided to come help him. The relief lasts only for a moment before the perp runs over to your potential location and starts taunting you all. Strategically, Kuroo starts to think of where everyone could be located. His one goal at this moment is to pair with you and take out the two suspects before things get messy.
You, on the other hand, wait for the sound of foot falls. Seconds feel like minutes, but the sound never comes. Tendou stands tall in his place and continues to scan, almost computer-like in his movements, over the area. He knows someone is there, and he fully intends on finding out who it is.
Oikawa and Iwaizumi had taken this time to move around Tendou to try and get to either Kuroo or the stranger, whichever reveals themselves first. Both of them try not to worry about you since they know you’re capable of handling the situation. They had lost some progress, having run back towards the door, but make it up in a short amount of time.
You sit and wait like livestock as the clock ticks. Can’t use portals - he would see the light. You search for a way out, but to no avail. The only hope you have is that he moves on or looks away for long enough and gives you time to break away.
Kuroo grows impatient with the lack of sound and makes his move. Slowly, he moves in a crouched position towards what he thinks is your location. His ankles pop softly under the weight of his body, but he continues to move.
Unbeknownst to him, the associate was just close enough to hear something. Quickly, the man turns and spots the same black tuft of hair you had seen just moments prior. “Tendou!”
Shit shit shit.
There’s no time. Tendou turns on a dime as the first shot rings out, the sound ricocheting off of all surfaces and causing everyone’s ears to ring - especially Oikawa who lets out a rather loud groan.
“There you are.” Eyes hungry, Tendou notes what he sees and hears from various places. In a split second decision, you decide it’s now or never and place a portal underneath yourself to the closest place you had last seen your dark haired friend.
The bright blue flash does not go unnoticed by the now eagled-eyed Tendou, who runs over to the flash, but lets out a growl when he finds no signs of anyone.
Kuroo drops down to the ground right after the initial gun fire and remains with his chest to the ground. Looking around, he can see that the bullet has lodged itself into the wall behind him, but the angle lets him know that the shooter was in a standing position from across the room.
Oikawa covers his ears and crouches in a defensive stance to try and stop the awful high-pitched ringing in his ears. Iwaizumi takes action and stands in front of him, looking for any immediate threats.
You fall right on your ass towards the back of the room, shielded by machinery and the pipes connecting them. From your position, you can’t see anyone. Quickly, you get a good grip on your gun and stand up.
Without thinking, you slam your back onto the controls for the machine and it groans as the metal pieces start to shift. Heat and steam start to emit from the machine, an orange building up at the opening which faces the doors of the building. Clicks of different cogs and wheels make the pieces of metal come to life as it only continues to get hotter in the area.
Immediately you duck into a different spot, more concerned with not being found out than the hot embers which start to fly out of the gaping maw. No one else is affected by this machinery, but the heat fills the room and causes all of the other machines and pipes to get warm, even hot to the touch.
“I don’t see you getting out of this one anytime soon. Just come out and we won’t shoot.” The stranger speaks clearly over the crackles and pops, giving away his position to everyone. You move with more haste, as you aren’t bothered with being heard, to directly across from the man.
That would be the most logical spot for Tetsuro to be in since this guy shot first. The pipes shield your body as you move through the maze of metal.
Oikawa shuts off his gift and takes a second to recollect his thoughts, only to be distracted by the fires burning. Hajime grabs his collar only a few seconds later after the man announces his position and the two get closer to him.
“What makes you think we would do that?” Kuroo is still on the ground and shouts, lungs burning with an iron resolve.
Idiot! Fucking moron! You move faster, thoughts more focused on the fact he gave up his location just to fucking talk back. He can’t be thinking straight.
Tendou had, for the most part, stayed in his little corner since you had teleported off. He pulls a knife from his coat pocket and holds it against his palm. The new warmth doesn’t startle him, but a smirk has slowly crept over his face since they first walked into the building. He has no idea this night could be so exciting. At the sound of a new voice, he stalks closer with sure footing.
Chest still pressed against the now warm ground, Kuroo pushes up and keeps low. All he wants in this moment is to agitate these assholes enough to get them to fuck up somehow. Then we can arrest these shitheads and call it a job well done. His chest heaves with short breaths, but he doesn’t care to acknowledge it at the moment.
Another shot fires out, this one directly on the pipe Kuroo is hiding behind. It would’ve been a direct hit had the structure not been there. All agency members hearts skip a beat, and the three in motion only push themselves harder to get the fuck out of here.
“Because we’ll kill you if we have too.” Whoever this is sounds bored, like he wasn’t about to rob someone of their life. You clutch the handle of your weapon as you grit your teeth.
Iwaizumi takes this time to get closer to the suspect, Oikawa staying behind him for backup and trying to keep an eye on Tendou. As they approach, they can see a head of grey hair paired with fairly thick shoulders. The man is facing the room with his back to the pair as he speaks to Kuroo.
Just as Iwaizumi lines up a shot, Tendou creeps through the concrete jungle and peers around a corner. He spots the edge of someone’s shoe, and the grin only grows to an uncomfortable size on his face. The knife slides across his palm and he steps out into the corridor.
You are only a few meters away, seeing Kuroo’s body hunched over just out of your grasp fills your chest with hope. We can get out of here. There’s no telling whether your body moves on its own, or by your own volition you start a dead sprint to him.
But Tendou rounds the corner, a wicked toothy grin adorning his features and your heart drops as you look directly into his eyes.
Blood drips down onto the floor, its soft patters vastly overpowered by the growling of machinery. Tendou’s movements stutter, the grin dropping fast as he processes what’s in front of him. You power through the shock wracking your body and grab Kuroo’s arm.
You knew this was a possibility when you heard his voice just a few short minutes ago. You knew that everything you’ve been working for these past four and a half years would be washed down the drain if he saw you.
All that matters is that everyone gets out alive.
His body falls into step with yours as you drag him towards the heat source. He doesn’t notice the split second encounter that just happened, but lets you take him somewhere safe.
The grey haired fellow saw everything go down, and hesitated on shooting, but Iwa takes his chance and shoots his left calf muscle. He keels over immediately upon impact and lets out a howl of pain. Iwaizumi runs in the direction he saw you and Kuroo bolt off to, and Oikawa right on his heels.
“Y/N…” Your name cascades off of Tendou’s lips, a quiet whisper hidden under a cacophony of industrial instruments. The stream of blood coming from his palm slowing until the deep red contrasts against the sapphire hue burning bright around the cut. Droplets rise from his hand and the ground, the liquid now taking the shape of little needles. Hundreds of these tiny daggers surround his hand as he walks forward.
Seconds pass, but it feels like centuries before you stumble over some tools and meet up with the two boys. Oikawa looks tired, a bit of blood coming from his ear when he pants and Iwaizumi looks shaken after shooting someone for the first time in quite a while. Kuroo takes deep breaths next to Oikawa.
“Y/N!” Your name is no longer a silent harmony. The situation finally catches up to you and you freeze in your place. Statue like, you bare a thousand yard stare as the men all look at you, two in horror and one in confusion.
No no no no no.
His voice doesn’t sound that far off, and you know this is a do or die kind of scenario. You glance around at the floor and place a portal under all of the boys’ feet, sending them directly into the car and hoping that they don’t break any bones on the short fall down.
“Y/N no-” Oikawa tries to plead, but the portal is shut before he can convince you of anything.
Tendou rounds one last corner before standing tall and facing you, as you hold your weapon in both hands. The little pricks of blood soften and drop to the floor when he realizes it’s just you.
“So it is you…” his foot moves cautiously forward, as if asking permission to come closer.
You remain in position, but don’t give him any warnings to stop. Memories come back to you in the blink of an eye; almost five years of your life surrounded with people like Tendou and giving up your time to an organization that didn’t give a shit about you.
His mind is clouded with these memories as well. He can see you and him laughing about old jokes, going on stakeouts, messing with Ushijima. The list goes on and on. For years he thought you were dead, and now you’re here.
Alive.
And right within his grasp.
Two sides of the same coin come to face to face with one another. One with a longing in his heart, and the other with a heaviness in her heart that can only be compared to hatred.
“You killed those people, didn’t you?” It’s hard to make out your words. He keeps eye contact, afraid that if he blinks you’ll be gone.
“You know the drill, Y/N. They messed up. None of them knew how to keep their mouths shut and Washijo needed them gone.” His tone is as if you understood, or that you continued to care about anything the Port Mafia was doing.
“Obviously they didn’t mess up that horribly since the police couldn’t figure out why all these bodies started to appear across the city.” Venom coats your words thick, but the redhead refuses to understand why you would talk to him in such a way.
“Doesn’t matter. Washijo told all of the executives to move out. You remember how he is, don’t you?” He inches closer and you take a step back.
“Yeah. He was deranged and obsessed with taking over Yokohama.”
“No, you got it wrong. He wants what’s best for Yokohama and he just has to take care of a few things before it’s ours.”
“Ours?! You seriously bought in to his stupid fucking show and dance?!”
“Always so vulgar Y/N.” He shakes his head. “We could’ve had Yokohama years ago if you had just stayed.”
“And why would I have done that?” You pause and wait for his retort, but nothing comes. “The mafia gave me nothing after years of service. I dedicated my life to it, and I got fucking nothing. At least when I’m a detective I can help the people.”
His expressions turns sour as you speak, a nasty snarl displaying instead. “They gave you a home, food, water, a family! Those things really don’t mean anything to you?”
“Not when it costs innocent lives.” You clench your jaw and look at him with disgust. In his own head, he refuses to believe that this is you; that this is his Y/N.
His partner had crawled his way to you both in the meantime, careful not to bump his leg. When you finally take a look at him, it registers that it is Osamu Miya. The last time you had seen him, he was just a foot soldier. You can see that he’s hardened over the years, now trying to secure a spot amongst the top ranks if he hasn’t already.
A phone is placed over his ears, you’re sure it’s for backup and you don’t hesitate to create a portal under you. Tendou jolts forward and tries to snatch any part of you he can, but you fall into the driver's seat of the car with a grunt.
Oikawa and Kuroo are in the back, looking at you with wide eyes as Iwaizumi asks if you are okay.
“They called backup,” you say. He whispers something out of frustration, but you don’t bother to pay attention as you shove the keys into the car harshly and throw it into drive. Kuroo’s body tosses around like a ragdoll in the back, having not braced himself for the sudden motion. Oikawa grips the overhead handle and Iwaizumi the dash.
Tires screech as you make a sharp turn out of the parking lot. Another shot rings out, but misses. You check the rearview and see a blur of red hair standing at the door of the facility.
“What the fuck is going on?!” Kuroo demands after adjusting himself to sit properly.
No one answers his call, instead choosing to focus on the surrounding area for potential threats. You focus on driving through the dark streets and finding a quick and inconspicuous way back to the agency. Hajime keeps an eye on the right side of the vehicle, while Tooru covers the left.
Kuroo’s jaw falls open, he’s never felt more ignored in his entire life. “Hello!?”
A vehicle swings itself around a corner behind you all, the immediate sound of gunshots doing nothing to conceal its presence. Oikawa sticks his weapon out of the window and starts to fire back with pot shots, Kuroo ducks down and covers his head.
Glass shatters across the backseat, the back windshield now scattered after being hit with several bullets. You and Hajime try your best to use the head rests as decent enough cover in the meantime.
“Get the tires idiot!” You shout over the thousands of different noises. Through your side mirror, you can see the car behind you is a black SUV - standard for the Port Mafia. The decent thing about those is that they are raised higher from the ground than most other cars, and therefore makes it easier to lodge a bullet either into the vehicle or its tires.
Kuroo stays hunched over, curled into a ball from the initial shots. What the fuck is going on?! His heart beats in his throat, but he’s frozen. His muscles don’t move. He can’t help.
Does he want to help? Who’s in the right?
Who are you?
Another SUV appears in front of you, slowing to bump its bumper with your own. Hajime props himself fully on the car door with the window rolled all the way down. With his gift, Man of Steel, he can virtually protect himself from almost anything - from gunshots to C4, his skin won’t have as much as a scratch on it as long as his gift is being consciously used.
His arms prop themselves on the roof of the car, using it as a sort of tripod to steady his aim against the intense wind. He takes a deep breath in, and once he holds for a second or two, he fires. The bullet doesn’t even scratch the car, and he silently cusses when he exhales and prepares for the next one.
You maneuver the car between your pursuers, but as each second passes you start to psych yourself out. If these two can’t hit their marks then we’re fucked. Big time.
“Hajime!” He slinks back into the seat as he looks to you. “Switch me.”
Fully understanding, he leaves the gun on the dash and leans forward. Kuroo watches the exchange go down, finally prying his eyes open. With trained ease, you push on the gas pedal hard before releasing quickly and sliding over to the passengers seat with your legs pulled up to your chest. Hajime steps over, foot hitting the gas first to ensure there’s still movement before he slams into the seat.
You grab the handgun and get into the same position he was in just a couple seconds ago. The wind beats against your face, nose and cheeks becoming red instantly from the cold. With a trained gaze, you line up the shot and follow a similar procedure, taking a deep breath in, holding and closing one eye before taking the shot.
The bullet flies through the air, a millisecond passes before the car in front swerves drastically and crashes just off to the right of you in the forest. In a flash, the scene is longer on your mind as you turn your attention to the last remaining problem.
Tooru continues to pop off shots from inside the vehicle, more concerned with his body than his counterpart. Hajime speeds up the car, shifting into the next gear since there’s nothing blocking your way. The hunk of metal jerks unceremoniously and everyone's heads bob and sway.
Your hands clutch the handle right above the window door, but you decide in a split second that you need to take a risk in order to get away from these freaks as soon as possible. One hand remains white knuckled on the handle, but one of your knees adjusts itself onto the area where the window goes down. This position allows you to see higher above the car, and clearly see the SUV tailing you.
“Y/N!” Hajime sees you moving around in his peripheral, but once he turns to look at you his body is wracked with panic. A hand grips the ankle of the other leg. As if it’s going to do anything if you fall.
This time around, you don’t have anything to steady yourself on and you only have one hand on the gun. With it in the air, you close one eye and take a steady breath in. You shoot before you can hold it in, and the bullet grazes the side mirror.
The men inside, who were focused on Oikawa, now see you practically hanging out of the car. Their focus shifts entirely to you, but you’re able to get a second, and last, shot off.
Once more, the car spins out of control and lands itself amidst the trees. Smoke erupts from the smashed engine, but they are out of sight in a matter of seconds.
You slide back into the car, Iwaizumi releases your ankle and lets a sigh of relief pass his lips. Tooru wipes glass shards off of his seat and leans back, letting the wind cool down the intense heat.
Kuroo remains silent. His gut tells him that even if he was to ask any questions, none of you would answer. He plays the scene from the manufacturing building in his head a thousand times. Why did the Port Mafia know your name?
You don’t even have to look at him to know that he’s processing. “Kuroo.” He looks up, but isn’t met with your face but rather the back of your head. You don’t have it in you to look at him, knowing that he has a decent idea of what’s going on. “We can talk once we get back to the agency, but for now we gotta make sure it’s safe.”
“Yeah.” It comes out as a breath. Oikawa watches the interaction and can see the betrayal in his eyes.
“You can ask any questions you want,” you say. Hajime side-eyes you at the proclamation. “You deserve to know.”
‘it’s all too much.’ you think to yourself, writing the final lines of the letter you wish to leave behind.
‘it hurts so much.’
you placed your pen on top of the letter, leaving it on the desk. you spun slowly, taking in image of your bedroom, the only safe space you’ve had in a long time. a small photo taped on the wall caught your eye. it was a picture of an anime character, tooru oikawa. you found yourself walking towards it, and gently placing a hand on it. you sighed to yourself, “if only you were real.”
maybe if he were real, he’d talk you out of this. if he were real, you’d have an ounce of happiness you so longed for. but he isn’t.
the harsh truth slapped you, and you realize you’ve been staring at the picture for quite a bit.
dressed in your favorite clothes, you left your room, earphones plugged in with music blasting at full volume. you walked across your rooftop, the wind messing up your hair. you watch the clouds go by, sitting at the edge of the roof.
――
at the other end of the universe, a whistle blew, signalling a point for a team. tooru pants, flashing a smile at hajime. aoba johsai managed to force karasuno into a deuce for their third set. “iwa-chan.” he calls out, hearing the familiar song at the back of his head.
“they’re listening to it again.” he exclaimed. hajime looks at him briefly, “again? it must be their favorite song, then.”
“listen, trashykawa. i know they’re your soulmate but you gotta focus.” he reprimanded, now looking at the other end of the court, where karasuno are staring at them with such tenacity. they all are after the same thing, to be the team that wins.
“i’ll find you. i promise.” tooru whispers to himself, just as the umpire blows the whistle. tooru sends another serve, even more determined to win this match. in his head, the sooner they win, the sooner he could look for his soulmate.
there’s no distance he won’t go through to look for the one the universe gave him.
――
you looked down at the pavement below. taking a deep breath, you stand up and turn around from the edge. there were no more tears to shed at this point. staring back up at the sky, you felt tears drip down your face as you began to apologize.
you started to apologize to those you felt still cared. to those you have hurt, those who have hurt you. you began apologizing to yourself, knowing you deserve better than what you received, that you deserve better than how other people have treated you, how you treated yourself.
finally, you whispered your apologies to your soulmate. you apologized for never getting to meet them, for not being strong enough to push through. and you pray to whatever greater being there is, for your soulmate to be happy, and for them to understand that this… this is the only thing to stop the pain.
the wind will carry your apologies for you.
the tears you shed were not because you were sad, on the contrary, it’s more so because you felt like you were in charge of your life for once.
you stepped back, letting yourself fall with no regrets, because you’ll be at peace.
――
just as akira managed to send the ball to the other side of the court, tooru felt a sharp pain in his chest. “iwa-” he choked out, his hands clutching his chest before falling to his knees. their coach noticed the captain in pain and called for a time-out almost immediately. hajime knelt down in front of his best friend, asking him what’s wrong.
“iwa, my heart and head hurts. why is my heart hurting so much?” tooru grunted in pain, tears leaking out of his eyes. both teams gathered around the pair, but the setter didn’t mind. he just wanted the pain to stop. hajime looked to their team for help, but none of them knew what was going on. tooru never had any health conditions aside from his injured knee.
he grabbed the ace’s arm and squeezed, barely breathing due to the immense pain he’s feeling. “my body feels weird, and everything hurts!” he sobbed, not caring about how loud he was.
the aoba johsai coaches got through the crowd and hooked their arms under tooru’s. “you’re gonna have to stand up, oikawa.” the head coach says, before they hoisted him up. at least, tried to.
the brunet’s knees gave out and he fell forwards, his fellow third years catching him.
“what’s happening? please, make it stop!” he wails, the pain increasing by the second. his head was pounding, he could barely make out anything that’s happening around him. their coach tries to get him to describe the pain as the head coach calls an ambulance.
“it hurts! please!” he begs to no one in particular. the last thing tooru remembers is hajime’s worried face hovering over him.
―
all around him was brightness.
the pain in his chest has dulled, and the headache is practically non-existent. searing white lights stung his eyes as they opened. he noticed he was at the hospital, judging from the white gown he wore. tooru bolted up, waking the sleeping hajime and issei. “oh, oikawa. you’re awake. i’ll go get the nurse.” the latter says in a hurry.
“iwa-chan, what happened? what about the game-”
“we lost.” hajime interrupted. “but that’s not important.”
tooru looked appalled. “not important? iwa-chan, the game is important. what happened when i was out?”
his friend stood up, and started to pace around the room. “i… i don’t know how to tell you.”
tooru wanted to burst, but seeing the expression on hajime’s face made him falter. “what is it? was it tobio-chan? or the shrimp? i’d be surprised if it was mr. refreshing-”
“it’s not about the game, oikawa.”
he stopped talking. hajime would only use the name ‘oikawa’ in serious matters. “...hajime?”
“the pain you felt… shit, i don’t know how to tell you.”
the captain felt tears brimming in his eyes as he whimpered out, “please.”
hajime sighed, and sat on the chair beside the bed. he took a deep breath and said in a soft voice, “there isn’t an easy way to tell you this. i wish there was.”
there was a long pause before he spoke again. “the pain you felt… it is because your soulmate died.”
tooru didn’t have the energy to protest, he didn’t even have the energy to speak. he just let his tears fall, and he let hajime rub his back in comforting circles. the deafening silence of the room was occasionally broken by the sound of his pained sobs and whimpers.
and just like that, the two most important things to tooru oikawa are gone.
Oikawa walked by the convenience store after babysitting his nephew. He glanced into the window to see some new snacks that caught his eye. He detours into the store and disappeared to the snack aisle. As he examined the different chips, he heard someone enter the vacant store.
"Welcome in," The merchant says.
"Hi, where can I find the onigiri?" A soft voice asks. Oikawa perked up at the voice and darted his eyes towards the entrance. His eyes widen as he spots you being directed to the refrigerators. You seemed back to normal, your usual clothes and hairstyle.
"Y/n-chan!" Oikawa walks in your direction. "It's me- Oikawa. We met last week when you came to the school."
"Oh, you were with that other dude," You recalled.
"Iwaizumi," Oikawa named. He felt so awkward now knowing you can't remember anything about him or his best friend. "How are you?"
"I'm.." You fell quiet. "I'm scared."
"Do you want to talk about it?" Oikawa tilts his head. You raise your eyebrow at him. "I know I'm basically a stranger but-"
"I'd like to," You cut him off. "Let me buy this first and we can talk outside about it."
Oikawa follows you to the cash register with his snacks. He places his bag of chips beside your onigiri and takes out his wallet. You watch as he insisted on paying for your food. You walk out the store together and seat yourself on the bench.
"What's scaring you?" Oikawa says. You quietly pull out a notebook filled with notes.
L/n Y/n Address - ███ ███ █ ███████ Home Phone - ███████ ███████ Chiba Maiya - Seijoh/junior high;; best friend? Chiba Mitsue - brother;; ███████ Jiji & Baba - Passed on █████ ██ & █████ ██ Seijoh - aka Aoba Johsai;; photography club vc Oikawa Tooru - ? Circles names - Oikawa, Iwaizumi, Matsukawa, Hanamaki, ████, ███████, ██ █████
"I don't remember anything," Your lip quivered as you spoke. "The thought of not being able to remember my life scares me so much. I mean, my mind is blank! I can't remember Chiba, I can't even remember my grandparents dying. I'm-"
You were too shaken up to continue going on. You began to cry at the thought of forgetting about the most important people to you.
As the tears fell down your warm cheeks, Oikawa rubbed your back. Loud revs from across the neighborhood startles you, causing you to jump at the sound. "No, no, no!" You cried. "Stop- I'm-"
Flashes of the accident fade in and out. The muffled sounds of a car crashing muted everything around you. With every blink all you saw was red blurred surroundings. The false presence of a crash caused you to hide your face and scream. Hot tears rolled down your face as you cried into your sleeves.
"Y/n, I'm here," Oikawa was quick to grab onto you. "Hey, hey look at me. It's not going to hurt you. I'm right here. It's going to be okay."
You held onto his arm as you cried your heart out. The notebook you were showing Oikawa fell to the floor, displaying your notes for everyone to see. You took deep breaths before slowly letting go of the setter. Oikawa bends down to pick up the notes and examine them.
An idea sparks in his head. "How about, I tell you about all the good days you've had with your friends? To get your mind off of things," He suggests.
"Today?" You sniffled.
"No, whenever you're free," He wipes a tear off your rosy face. "Here, I'll write my number. I'll walk you home today but text me when you can hang out. I'll bring things to help you remember. Sound good?"
"Yea," You say softly. "I'd like that."
Oikawa shoots another smile before handing you the notebook. The two of you gather your snacks and walked in the direction of your house.
Iwaizumi was getting irritated that his best friend wasn't answering his phone. He was upset and angry at himself. Ever since Maiya told him about the accident, he felt responsible for what happened. Though he knew none of it was his fault, he wished he never said those harsh things to you. It was true, his heart ached at the thought of you hurt yet his brain knew he shouldn't worry. Iwa knew you weren't his anymore, not his to tend to, not his to check in on.
He seats himself at his desk and leans back. The reflection of your promise ring beamed a light into his eye. Unlike you, Iwaizumi hasn't shed a tear since you broke up. Yet seeing the ring again hit something. Not enough to make him cry but enough to make him feel guilty.
After Oikawa drops you off at your house, he sees the abundant of messages from Iwaizumi. He dials his phone number and his best friend almost immediately answers.
"Why the fuck aren't you answering my texts?" Iwaizumi growled.
"Sorry Iwa-chan, I was dropping someone off."
"Okay I don't care about your fan girls."
"It wasn't a fan girl."
"Then who was it?"
"Someone...important."
Just then you send him a message.
y/n: monday after school, we can talk.
"I won't see you after school on Monday, I have a- a date perse."
"A date?"
"Do you always have to doubt me Iwa-chan?"
"If I didn't doubt you, I wouldn't be your friend."
All I Ask Of You
Pairing: Tendou Satori x f!reader x Oikawa Tooru Warnings: Implied NSFW at the end Rating: PG-13 Summary: Tendou was in love with his best friend who was the lead in Phantom of The Opera. However, he was the stage manager watching as she falls in love with her castmate both on the stage and in real life.
The orchestra was preparing to play the second to last song in the first act of The Phantom of The Opera. Tendou could feel his heart clench as he turned his headset off. Thankfully most of the cast was in the green room preparing for the next act with the exception of Atsumu who was heading up to his place in the form where he would sing the reprise and crash the exquisite chandelier on the stage ending the first act.
The leads entered the stage. Oikawa gently held the hand of Christine who was played by Tendou’s best friend Y/N. Tendou wrapped his gangly arms around his clipboard as the leads began to talk to each other. Having just narrowly escaped a tantrum from the Phantom, Raoul and Christine had escaped to the roof of the opera house. Gently the fake snow started to fall around them and the spotlight illuminated their faces. From the first wing, Tendou watched as Oikawa gently lifted the hood of Y/N’s cloak off of her head letting her silky H/C curls fall against her shoulders framing her face oh so elegantly.
“What you heard, was a dream and nothing more,” Oikawa said holding Y/N’s nimble hands in his own. In the wings, Tendou whispered every one of Oikawa’s lines to himself pretending it was himself holding the hands of Y/N.
Y/N was the reason that Tendou had joined the theater. In their childhood, Y/N’s mother had taken the two of them to see! Tendou hadn’t really wanted to go but when Y/N’s beautiful E/C widened in happiness at her mother’s announcement there was zero chance of him telling her no. It was on this day that Tendou first realized that his friend was more special than before.
His appearance drove people away. Almost everything physical about Tendou was off-putting to people. His hair was unnaturally red. His eyes seemed to follow whoever dared look in them for too long. People called his body almost monstrous but not because of its size. Sure Tendou had height, but the term referred to how gangly his arms and legs were. The kids at school steered away from him out of fear that he would try to use his guessing ability to get ahead in life.
Only Y/N had shown him any sign of respect up until he met Ushijima but that was a different story.
The string section of the orchestra had shifted to open up the music for “All I Ask Of You.” The song where Raoul and Christine would profess their undying love for each other. Every night for the last six weeks, Tendou had watched the love of his life speak meaning behind the words he wished he could tell her. Tendou’s breath hitched as Oikawa gingerly touched Y/N’s cheek. Even with the heat of her cloak and the spotlights, Tendou could see the tinged cheeks of his crush knowing it was not entirely from the environment around her. It was partly due to the man in front of her.
“Yet in his eyes all the sadness of the world. Those pleading eyes that both threaten and adore.”
Y/N’s ethereal voice rang out through the theater causing several tears to shed. Including a couple from Tendou.
“Christine, Christine...” Oikawa pulled the girl close to his chest as Atsumu sings his echoing line prompting Oikawa and Y/N to look around in fear of the Phantom.
And finally.
Finally.
The worst part of the night begins.
Oikawa takes Y/N’s hands and begins to sing softly. Tendou in the wings catches Y/N’s eye as he mouths every word of the song that Y/N had begged him to practice.
“Who knows Satori? You could replace Oikawa!” She had said giving his arm a slight push as they ate their post-rehearsal dinner at his house. Tendou had laughed and played along in the lie but seeing it on the stage reminded him of how wrong he was to not tell her the truth at that moment.
“No more talk of darkness. Forget these wide-eyed fears. I’m here. Nothing can harm you. My words will warm and calm you.”
Tendou’s heart frantically increased its pace as he reminded himself of how Y/N trusted him with everything. Back in their third year of high school when Y/N’s ex had broken up with her, Tendou had created an entire pillow kingdom for her to spend the weekend in while he cheered him up. Their own perfect world where no one could get to them. But Y/N had been on her phone while he feigned sleep, silently giggling at something that illuminated the angelic features of her face. Tendou had never been one to have more than a few text messages (which were only ever from you, his parents, or the volleyball team group chat) and found himself not as attached to his phone as she was. But he couldn’t resist the smidge of jealousy that wormed its way into his heart everything you opened a snap from whoever had been making you laugh.
“Let me be your freedom. Let daylight dry your tears. I’m here with you beside you. To guard you and to guide you.”
He remembered when he’d found out she was transferring from Seijoh to Shiratorizawa back when they were still in high school`. Y/N hadn’t passed the entrance exams the first time around (not that she was in anyway dumb.) but had worked her butt off to retake them at the start of their second year. She had passed with flying colors and Tendou had immediately volunteered to show her around the school even though he knew that she knew every inch of Shiratorizawa grounds due to all the impromptu volleyball lessons she had attended at Tendou’s request.
All traces of oxygen escaped Tendou when Y/N opened her mouth to sing back to Oikawa whom Tendou knew had the biggest eyes for at the moment.
“Say you love me every waking moment. Turn my head with talk of summertime....”
Winter, summer, spring, or fall. Tendou had fond memories of each season he spent with Y/N. In the winter the two of them would travel to Tokyo for New Years’ and pray at the shrine for a good new year. In the summertime, Tendou would bring watermelon over to her house and they would read old Shonen Jump editions with the lights and fans on while participating in self-care rituals. He has so many photos of the two of them singing entire musical tracks in facemasks and pajamas while he has his hair in 12 braids and hers held up with 3 headbands and every barrette he could find in her room. In the spring you would visit the cherry blossom festival and he would flood her Instagram with every photo they took. In the fall they would spend their time tramping around Miyagi enjoying the leaves and an American drink from Starbucks (he’d never admitted it but he was now addicted to Pumpkin Spice)
“Say you need me with you now and always. Promise me that all you say is true. That’s all I ask of you.”
What a simple ask in the song but it was what needed to be asked. Both by the character Christine and himself. However, he knew that she felt nothing towards him that passed the barriers of friendship. It pierced his heart when he found out that Oikawa and Y/N had announced they had been seeing each other several years ago.
That year Tendou had spent Valentine’s Day alone for the first time in 11 years.
Soon after this announcement, Tendou began to see Y/N less and less as she now had two very important boys to balance in her life.
Behind the stage, there was the green room which housed the rest of the cast. Somewhere getting a head start on their costume change for the start of the second act, some were grabbing a quick bite with an overshirt protecting their costumes. However, there was a fairly large group that had their eyes glued to the TV that broadcast the show inside the green room to help them figure out when to make their next appearance.
“Dude he’s not gonna do it,” Kageyama whispered to Hinata who was in the middle of buttoning up his shirt for the second act.
“Have some faith is something! They’ve been together for years!” Hinata snapped that earned him a loud “SHUSH” from the rest of the cast. Sugawara who was finishing up on Kiyoko’s make-up for Carlotta sent a sharp glare to the orange-haired boy.
“You two need to simmer down. The audience can hear you. And yes, he probably will he’s just waiting for the right moment in the song.” Suga explained as he steadied Kiyoko’s face to draw the eyeliner on her eyes.
“Yeah shut up punks! We wanna watch it happen!” Yamamoto called from his
A fair amount of the cast stood around the flat screen that showed Oikawa and Y/N singing to each other waiting for the surprise that neither Y/N nor Tendou was ready for.
“Let me be your shelter. Let me be your light. You’re safe, no one will find you. Your fears are far behind you.”
Y/N had many fears that she had shared with Tendou over the years of their life together. Trivial ones like spiders, snakes, and things that go bump in the night but Tendou knew that her deepest fear was never finding true love which had only blossomed after her ex had broken up with her.
“All I want is freedom. A world with no more night. And you always beside me. To hold me and to hide me.”
What happened next sent Tendou’s heart hurtling towards a brick wall covered in spikes dripping in acid. His eyes bugged out of his head as he watched Oikawa get on one knee holding out a small velvet box. Wait where did he get that from? Tendou checked his clipboard hurriedly. There wasn’t a ring box on the props list...
No...
“Then say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime. Let me lead you from your solitude. Say you need me with you, here beside you. Anywhere you go let me go to. Christine. That’s all I ask of you.”
Y/N’s face burst out in the largest smile Tendou had ever seen as his heart crumbled away, physical pain coursing through his veins. He couldn’t breathe. Everything was cold and his arms were numb. This had to be a dream! Y/N wouldn’t do this! She wouldn’t because she loved him right?
Right?
“Say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime. Say the word and I will follow you.” Her exquisitely happy voice broke through the barrier of silence that had surrounded the theater save for the orchestra. No, she couldn’t do this.
“Share each day with me each night, each morning.” They both sang as Oikawa stood up and placed the ring on Y/N’s perfectly crafted finger. A place that should remain bare. A place for his ring for her.
“Say you love me...” Y/N whispered bringing her hand to Oikawa’s face with the happiest of smiles.
“You know I do...” Oikawa sang softly taking Y/N’s hand pressing it to his cheek. Subconsciously, Tendou reached for Y/N’s hand needing it to calm the ache in his heart that was beginning to constrict. Tendou collapsed on the ground cupping his hand against his mouth to stifle the dry sobs that had started. He needed to get out of there before someone in the audience heard him.
“Love me! That’s all I ask of you!”
Tendou hadn’t cared before when they kissed since it was written in the script. But tonight this kiss sealed the end for Tendou.
He had lost Y/N before he had even had a chance with her.
Whoops, and hollers from the audience were nothing compared to the cheers in the green room. Oikawa had been planning this proposal for months, had bought the ring the day Y/N had said yes to dating him. Everyone had placed bets on when and how he would propose but this proposal really knocked it out of the park.
The kiss went on longer than normal since this was a special night. When the music started up again, Tendou could see the tears falling from Y/N’s beautiful e/c eyes. The tears matched his own as his lip quivered slightly.
“Anywhere you go, let me go too. Love me, that’s all I ask of you...”
The crowd began their applause as Y/N began her reverie as Christine.
“I must go they’ll wonder where I am! Raoul wait for me!” Y/N exclaimed. Oikawa lets her hands go with a kiss on her dainty wrist.
“Christine I love you!”
“Order your fine horses! Be with them at the door!”
“And soon you’ll be beside me!”
“You’ll guard me and you’ll guide me.”
And with that Y/N and Oikawa rushed off stage to the thundering applause. Tendou backed away quickly to avoid the two as they rejoiced in the privacy of the wings. He clutched his chest pulling his black shirt away in an attempt to loosen the uncomfortable friction in his chest.
“If it wasn’t clear then Y/N I hope it is now. Will you marry me?” Oikawa asked looking into her eyes. A slight squeal from Y/N gave him his answer and they two kissed once more before running into the green room where they were greeted with a loud round of “Congratulations!”
Meanwhile, on stage, Atsumu was singing the Phantom’s soliloquy but even with the mask propped on his face he couldn’t hide the smile that was emerging in happiness for his fellow cast members,.
Tendou turned his headset back on and listened to the jibber jabber of the stagehands who were prepping for the next scene where the chandelier would crash onto the stage. Tendou wiped his face off to make it look as though he had a possible allergy attack and had not been mourning the loss of the love of his life.
Gripping the mic he spoke quickly.
“Hey, I just got an emergency text from my landlord. My apartment’s flooded and I need to go.” he lied. He didn’t bother to thank whoever agreed to relieve him and ripped his headset off throwing it to the side and narrowly avoiding the influx of cast members on his way out of the theater.
Tendou didn’t bother to check his phone when he got home. He made a beeline for his bedroom throwing his backpack aggressively against the wall most likely shattering his computer screen and his phone. Throwing himself on the bed in a true theater fashion he drowned the pillows on his bed in salty tears. They were bitter. Filled with jealousy. All his life he’d only ever had one person who was there for him and it was Y/N. But now she was gone.
“Say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime. Say the word and I will follow you. Y/N... That’s all I ask of you...”
Tendou silently sobbed himself to sleep that night with the once dreamlike images of Y/N now torturing him as dubious nightmares.
______________________________________________________________
You were in the green room with your fiancé’s arm tucking you into his side. Your giddy expression hadn’t left your face since the moment Oikawa had proposed to you.
It was such a perfect proposal and the audience ate it up! You were fairly certain that there had been several reporters and critics in the audience. You loved Oikawa and this along with his proposal was the beginning of a brand new world for the two of you.
Looking around the green room, everyone was prepping to leave for the night. Y/N couldn’t find Tendou and felt like something was off since he wasn’t there to greet her with a warm chamomile tea and a bao bun like usual.
“Tooru, love I’m going to go get my phone but let’s head home once I grab it.” You whispered in his ear. Oikawa giggled in her ear and let her go. As you packed up your belongings, you texted Tendou asking him where he was.
You got no response.
You shrugged it off thinking that maybe he’d headed home and his phone may have died. You and your fiancé headed out of the theater with a cheerful goodbye heading to your apartment happy as could be.
When you got home, you had barely unlocked the door when Oikawa’s lips met yours in a fiery passion. Together your lips danced together as small noises escaped your mouth hungrily eaten up by Oikawa as he pushed you into a wall closing the door with a kick of his foot.
Oikawa picked you up and carried you into your shared bedroom as you continued to make out ferociously. Biting his bottom lip your tongue entered his mouth exploring the crevices inside. Oikawa’s nimble fingers made quick work of disposing of your shirt and bra.
“God Y/N... I was thinking about this all night. The moment you said yes I wanted to whisk you away back here.” Oikawa growled as he bit your ear and began to kiss the underside of your jaw as you mewled.
Your passionate night was uninterrupted by the silence of your phone. You didn’t even bother to look at it until the next day.
In your messages, your text to Tendou remained on delivered. Achingly you fumbled against the nightstand looking for your cellphone.
Right as you grabbed it a text from Tendou appeared.
Y/N.
I wanted to tell you from the moment that I met you that I liked you. We had all the same interests and together we were unstoppable as stage manager and lead! I guess it’s times like these where I am reminded of the day we met.
I would never treat you any different than the way you treat me.
I love you. I have for years and I will never stop loving you. But I know you love Oinky right? sorry that’s what Waka-kun calls him lol! Anyway, I’ll see you around.
You were speechless. For years you had had some inkling that maybe Tendou saw you more than a friend but despite having been friends for so long, you had never felt as though they were genuine. Fleeting moments of hello and goodbye.
Unbeknownst to Tendou, is that you still love him even if it would never be reciprocated. All Tendou wanted to ask you was to keep him together.
The End.
Iwaizumi observed the room thats decorated in various wedding ornaments. His eyes scanned the whole room until he noticed you. Flower petals littered the isle that you walked down and Iwaizumi couldn't help but smile when he saw you. Your eyes seemed glassy from the tears you shed beforehand, long awaiting this day. He watched as you walked closer and closer, until you were just a little ways away from him.
Iwaizumi could've sworn he saw you shaking with joy. From the audience it would seem like you were filled with joy just to be holding your beloved's hand, but he knew better than that.
He knew you better than that.
He knows that everyday since he met you in middle school you've dreamed of finding your special someone. Someone that would hold you and cherish you until the end of time. He of all people should know that, because you would tell him your dreams.
Almost every night you'd call him and talk your heart out, whether it was about how much school sucked or how you met a friendly street cat on your way home, it didn't matter. He just loved hearing your voice during those late night calls.
"Hey Iwa, what do you think a soulmate is?" you had called to ask him one night.
He thought about it for a moment until he realized he couldn't come up with an answer.
"I think they help bring out the best in you.. they help you achieve things you thought you never could."
While you two may have had countless phone calls, Iwaizumi could never forget about that night. It was the last day of your senior year, the two of you would be graduating the next day. Your words lingered in his mind for years until he realized, he had found his soulmate.
He had found you.
And he was happy, happy that he had you.
But things never go his way, and he had to learn that in one of the most painful ways possible.
It was just another normal night. Coincidentally, it was also the day of that phone call he'd never forget having with you. He had just gotten home from work and was resting on his couch when he saw his phone from the corner of his eye. He reached out to grab it and his finger hovered over your number, debating whether or not to give you a call.
It had been years since the two of you talked. Ever since you two became adults and went to different universities, you guys drifted apart. Iwaizumi wishes he would've tried harder to keep you in his life, but he failed.
Just as Iwaizumi was about to put his phone down it began to ring. He quickly looked over, silently hoping it was you but instead he was met with another surprise.
"Oikawa?"
"Iwa-chan!"
The two of them began to chat as if they were still in high school and all those years of being apart seemed to disappear.
"Iwa-chan, I have some great news!”
"What is it shittykawa?"
"I'll pretend you didn't call me that, but I got engaged!"
That was a shock to Iwaizumi, but nonetheless he was still happy for his best friend.
"To who?" He never regretted asking a question so much in his life than he did right now.
"(Y/n)!"
He felt his heart break. Tightly gripping his phone he managed to give his best friend a strained 'congratulations'. He hoped Oikawa didn't hear his heart break from the other line.
"I was wondering if you'd be my best man?"
"... Yea."
He never regretted accepting something from his best friend so much in his life like he did right now.
Now here he was, at his best friend's wedding, watching him marry the love of his life. Thinking back to the past on this time almost made Iwaizumi chuckle, especially at a time like this.
He thinks back to what you said about soulmates and let's out that chuckle he was holding back, only it sounded shaky and weak. Oikawa did have a habit of bringing out the best in people. What you said made sense to him now, almost as if it was some shitty foreshadowing.
He watched as Oikawa leaned down towards you to place a kiss on your lips, almost as if he was taunting Iwaizumi for doing what he never could. But he knew his best friend better than that, just like he knew you. He never told his friend about his small huge crush on you, he shouldn't be mad. Which is why Iwaizumi was confused, why was he mad that someone that took something that was never his?
"I've always loved you."
You gave Oikawa a teary eyed smile at his words.
Iwaizumi wishes he was the one that had said them.
