We waited for official translations; you know those "all according to keikaku" memes? "Everything will be daijoubu"? "People die if they are killed"? Some of those are deliberate jokes, but that was the level of fan translation - fan. Passionate, unpaid individuals doing their best so that something they loved could be shared in the community. "Nakama" was associated with One Piece for years because of this kind of thing.

I liked watching my officially liscensed!- Yu Yu Hakusho DVDs in English and in Japanese because the lines differed and it was interesting to see what changed. But even on DVD, sometimes you were lucky to get subtitles for the English dub. Sometimes you didn't get subtitles at all!

And we put up with this, because at the time, anime was a pretty underrepresented media type in the US. Then there was the boom, tons of pseudo-manga and pseudo-anime being produced, Shonen Jump and Shoujo Beat being officially translated...

We stopped watching mirrored Naruto episodes on Youtube (in three separate parts, because Youtube couldn't support a video longer than 10 minutes at the time) because now you could buy DVD sets with the official English dub!

We didn't think of it as piracy so much as 'the only way to get your hands on XYZ'. There was a guy in my high school anime club who was famous for having a gigantic CD album that was every first DVD of tons of official anime. We're talking probably over a hundred DVDs here. Before the official licensing hit, we had DBZ and Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! and that was about it. Those things weren't even presented to us as "anime", it was just a cool cartoon where the mouths and words didn't always match up (Speed Racer, Voltron, Astro Boy would be in the grandaddy category).

I have Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2 (officially translated!) volumes in my room right now that were sold mirrored because the US audience at the time had never encountered right-to-left reading styles. Never. The first non-mirrored I got (a DBZ volume) I ended up reading entirely backwards because I didn't know, even though it had arrows at the top to orient me!

We were delighted when things started getting official translations, because that also meant official merch! It meant we could reimburse the creators of series that had touched our hearts!

And now this shit.

It's Netflix all over again. I can't believe I'm old enough to remember when Netflix was good, but here we are. Here we fucking are. Anime fans have done mind-boggling shit to get our hands on releases of our favorite series, and in this era... yeah. Crunchyroll and Funimation can look forward to a rapid collapse, if they're lucky.

I’m having a bit of a like moment here shhdhd

Demon slayer is like something that’s helped me through a very dark time in my life. It’s very special to me. And like it being close to the end is like really hard for me. I got into in manga days when my mom was diagnosed with cancer. She gifted me the first volume thinking of like it. It’s been like my security and feels like she’s with me. I have so many fears now with it ending. I feel like people may think I’m crazy for that.

I’m worried we won’t get any more merch

I’m worried people want read fanfics anymore

I’m worried we won’t get official birthday or holiday art anymore

I’m just worried something I hold so dear will be gone. I’ve tried to express this before and people said it was stupid. My therapist said it’s normal to have a comfort passion. But I know others don’t get it.

It’s just really scary dealing with it. I know it’s going to end someday but I’m scared for that day. I feel silly for ranting but you are very kind to anons and I feel safe to rant.

I understand your fear, but demon slayer is considered to a New Gen 3 series. So even when it does end, I'm sure people will still read the fanfics, the official art may slow a bit but it will still come for years after the series end and there are still much older anime like Naruto, inuyasha, even Yu yu Hakusho that still gets merchandise. It may be slow, but they're still out there in production.

I understand that demon slayer is such a comfort to you, but please know that even though it's nearing it's end, it will always be there. It's very popular and while it does come and go with the fanfics cause people's hyperfixations jump to the next big things that is going on, people always go back to it.

i was always worried with time travel!aus because it either confuses me too much or it is dragged and the character forgets about their real life fhjaskdjkas but the way tokyo rev did it, im like WOAH! I AM ALL IN. i'll be honest, i didnt read the manga hdjsakhdjak i got lazy and just looked up the characters HAHAHA and went through their profiles and wikipedia everything asdfghjkl i am just watching the anime T_T I WANTED THE DRAKEN SWEATER and then i saw a jacket for the valhalla group and UGH wanted it so much dhjaskdhjak but it was SO expensive T_T

i do agree there are some shows that do time travel and make it extremely confusing for no reason 😭😭 there was another time travel show tokrev kept getting compared to when it came out? erased i think? i haven’t seen it so i wouldn’t know BUT i rlly like how they go back and forth and i think everything is explained well enough to keep your interest! i probably should finish the manga tbh i heard it gets INSANE later on with the different timelines 😧 kinda scared tbh just need all my favorite little guys to make it out alive thank you!

omg bungou stray dogs is literally one of my favorite anime ever 😫😫 the manga is SO GOOD too even if it uses a bunch of literary references you don’t have to have read the books they’re referring to to understand the characters! but it does make for a pretty funny situation for me (american) when you get to season two and like. edgar allan poe and f scott fitzgerald are the main antagonists LOL but there’s literally so many good things coming out soon !! my hot girl summer fr (staying inside and watching bsd 😚)

Trying to get some space from things but seeing the sauceribs constantly trying to warp the truth by spouting lies on posts focusing on other sessh-ships in places like Reddit or trying to downplay things for the sake of trying to make theirs look good as possible is insane. I gotten told to ignore it but it's becoming a plague. These Lolicon fandoms are known to move parasitically from fandom to fandom, slowly wrecking them. The current state of this fandom says it all. Tbh, all I see left of the HnY part of the fandom is mostly those same shippers pairing the 14 year old twins with Kirinmaru, same character that actually showed disgust of the fact of pedomaru marrying a kid (and no, it wasn't just cause of the prophecy shit that later became irrelevant like all the plots they tried to do and dropped because the studio had the writing all over the place). Really, don't even get me started on things the Sesshomaru's seiyuu and the director said.

This mindset has become an infestation. And no, I'm not afraid of saying it. Or them.

And I think people shouldn't be afraid to say it, especially if they want this community to live on for years to come.

Most pals I knew here left cause they feel done. And it's thanks in-part mostly to this shit. It's actually heartbreaking really... Currently feeling the same too.

Yashahime is an official product; yes. No, it's not a true continuation of it. In other words not "canon". It's just an official product. The movies, ovas, cd dramas are also all official products; even the og anime. The only thing that will be "true canon" is the manga the author wrote starting in November 13, 1996 in all black & white glory. And yes, that manga does not have saucerib nor ever implied it. The author stating he's her paternal/legal guardian figure makes that pretty solid. Anyone, who thought otherwise that— well that was just you 🙃

Her attitude towards the sequel, merch of Inuyasha refusing to even promote saucerib as a couple and her latest opinions with interviewers trying to push the idea of sequels for her other works says it all. The minute the spin off was over, it was like hny didn't exist and the only thing that did was Urusei Yatsura. Plus all the info we got here showing what actually went down with hny it's enough.

Nah, fam, we don't work with bullying or doxing around here. And even if we did, it wouldn't be necessary. Karma already bit sinners in the ass.

They spent two years yelling about how Sessrin was popular... only to see Yashahime's views drop the exact second Sunrise made it happen, losing just enough money so that it had to merge with other company.

They screamed that the show was now about the Sessrin family... only to see Sunrise giving all the actual emotional, affectionate scenes to Inuyasha, Kagome and their daughter while their ship was given shallow, cold and short interactions the few times they even shared the same frame.

They insisted Inukag wasn't as relevant as Sessrin... just to see them being used as promotional bait time and time again and the show only trend when they were in the episode.

They acted like Yashahime was the best thing to ever happen to mankind... only to see the animation and the writing getting dragged episode after episode by the critics.

They tried to convince us that there was nothing wrong with their ship and that it was approved and intended by Takahashi... only to hear her say Sesshomaru was nothing but Rin's legal guardian, the producers state that they didn't know how to write the relationship because it wasn't in the manga and many other people express how uncomfortable they were with the pairing.

They told us Sessrin was heavily accepted in the fandom... only to be faced with a massive backlash when the identity of the twins' mother was revealed.

They said that Rin was an adult... only to have Sunrise drawing her as a teen who looks younger than her 14 years old daughters, giving them nothing but kid Rin merch, juxtaposing child Rin and Sesshomaru scenes with romantic Inukag scenes, tracing a direct parallel between Rin and the villain's 14 years old daughter, changing the timeline a thousand times, making Jaken have to expressly state that she was 18 at the time she got pregnant... not to mention that one producer who actually said Rin was just "a little bit" older and that he asked her VA to keep her child self in mind.

They got it in their heads that Sesshomaru was this caring brother, husband and father who actually had a master plan to save the day and knew what he was doing all along while Rin was this girl boss, goddess queen... only to get hit with Sunrise showing him as a selfish bastard who doesn't give a flying fuck to his family and Rin being a plot device yet again, with the two of them displaying the exact same dynamic they always had since she was a child.

They forced this show as canon... only for the fandom to collectively ignore it completely and refuse to accept it.

They scolded Inukag shippers for demanding justice for the characters of the original show and for Moroha... only to have to do the same thing for their ship because in the end of the day they got jackshit but the fact that an official Inuyasha source made Sessrin happen.

And now there are only two options for them: to admit that we have been right or pretend that they're happy with what they got. Honestly, they don't need to be exposed or made fun of, because everything they do, every situation they purposefully put themselves into is already a prank in and on itself.

In fact, if the ship was just a little bit less disgusting and its shippers a little bit less annoying I'd actually feel inclined to pity them.

Your last ask kind of bothers me, because the whole premise of the Shiina manga is that two of the protags were created through child grooming. It doesn't matter if you pirate it or not, you're just prioritizing the "official" content even though it's presented right alongside the OOC gross SR stuff. I get loving InuKag, but what's the difference between something official and a doujinshi anyway? Just the creators getting to make money off the brand. If Shiina wasn't doing the manga in partnership with the owners of the Inuyasha brand, you wouldn't take a second look at it because it's no better than the middling fanfiction written on AO3. But because it's "official" you're drooling all over it and willing to ignore all the context surrounding it?

Why don't you just go and find a good InuKag fan artist that doesn't support SR and support them instead?

This is going to be a very long and rambling post as I try to make my thoughts clear. on both this ask and the ask I got previously.

First of all, I myself don’t ship InuKag. I know, that’s basically blasphemy in this fandom, but I don’t. So if you’re trying to come for me personally anon, don’t bother.

With that out of the way, I was trying to offer an alternative to that particular anon. Some people can enjoy fan content but still prioritise canon content of their ships (even when it comes to something non-canon like Yashahime and even less canon still when it comes to the manga) just out of a desire to want to know what happens next. I don’t see quite as much with western media but there’s something about the culture of the anime and manga industry and how there’s almost always new merch being released of some sort that basically primes the consumer to want more, even when a series is long finished.

Then again, some people are just fandom purists and feel safer with content that has some semblance of official status. Remember that the iceberg that is Yashahime only hit the Inuyasha fandom relatively recently and a lot of people are still hurt, confused and trying to seperate being able to enjoy the original work without having to also support the sequel and, more importantly, creators who allowed this to happen even if it isn’t canon. The Harry Potter fandom is proof that you can completely separate the work from the author and their problematic decisions and still enjoy the work itself, but as I said, the Inuyasha fandom is still collecting itself from the fallout.

As for me, I like InuKik and SessKik and I will always heavily support queer ships over straight ones. I’m in no way dismissing your point of supporting fan content and fan creators bc there’s literally no chance I’m going to get any content at all if it’s not fanmade, and I create fan content myself to continue that goal onwards. Many of us are already going the route that Harry Potter took and are contributing more of our own content that completely separates off the distressing elements introduced to the fandom. I’m pretty sure people will come around as it’s already happening, but in the meantime I’m trying to be understanding of how upset communities like InuKag and MirSan will still be.

In the meantime, in regards to said spinoff that’s being made about the newlywed couples, while I’ve recommended pirating as the best way to enjoy it without financially supporting it, I do want to warn people at the same time. Remember this is still a Yashahime-centric project. I understand that previous anon loves InuKag and wants more of them, but look at his InuKag has been treated by Yashahime so far. Not only are they no longer the heart of the narrative, they’re reduced to a bastardised version of the original that allows and fawns over Sesshomaru’s violation of Rin, and then said bastardised version we’re left with is all but absent from the story.

To previous anon, I understand being comfortable with more ‘official’-ish content and as I said, if you must look at it then don’t financially contribute to it, but remember that this is not a series that has been kind to, understood or valued InuKag. The only reason this series is being made, I said some time ago, is because it’s attempting to use InuKag as a cover to try and push the SessRin narrative more. As current anon is pointing out, any new content with InuKag is going to be stained by SR and the context around the sequel.

There’s no shortage of InuKag events that have happened this year and plenty of master posts of good content. I think I saw somewhere that’s there’s a zine in the works. I can’t tell you how to spend your time or money on the internet, but if it was me, I’d be supporting fan comics and doujinshis, instead of official-but-not content that doesn’t treat my OTP fairly. Just something to think about.

I resent Hanyo no Yashahime so much because of... everything... but the very reason why is because that anime is basically a horrible fanfiction that got paid.

I know that Sumisawa directed Inuyasha: Swords of the Honorable Ruler, even though he's not the writer but the fact remains that he had contribution to its plot and timeline. Now he made this unwanted spin-off of manga and anime Inuyasha, he must've wanted to bring the plot and timeline from his previous work. But in this shitshow, he messed up the timeline because he needed to retcon Rin's age. And so it created domino's effect, one mess up lead to another mess up. The badly written plot has always been there, but the retconned age and timeline makes the plot and storyline even worse and more messy.

If this is a free fanfiction or fanedit, I won't get pissed and will be just like "yeah... i don't really feel like to read this fic so.. sorry author, I gotta skip this story", but it's not! It's aired in numerous streaming service that people need to subscribe to watch. Even if it's in youtube, there's still ads that could gain revenue for shitrise. And there are merch, too! Official blu-ray DVD with unreasonable price and for wtv reason they just have to split one season into two DVD sets! He wrote a bad fanfiction and still got paid. Even if we criticize him, either with logical reasonings and polite words or paragraphs full of foul-mouthed words, he won't listen and consider any of it!

But if there's a fanfiction author in tumblr or ffnet or ao3 wrote a story with slightly bad plot and messy timeline? Random anons and readers popping up here and there commenting "your fic sucks" "you shouldnt've write" blahblahblah &c. &c. All those hate messages because the free story is written a lil bit messy.

On top of Sesshomaru making Rin his child bride, so many things don’t make any sense such as: - Toga carrying Tessaiga and Tenseiga 600 years ago and throwing a Meido Zangetsuha with Tessaiga 500 years ago (despite the facts that Tessaiga was forged to protect his human bride Izayoi about 200 years ago and Tenseiga was cast off Tessaiga to contain Meido Zangetsuha). - The Higurashi family not being very emotional upon seeing Moroha and not asking her about her parents. - Towa not asking Homura why he tried to kill her and her sister. - Sango knew Sesshomaru had children, so how come her brother didn’t know until 14 years later? - Sesshomaru hiding his children but not Rin despite Zero having clearly said that she wanted to see his “entire” family in agony. … There’s only one explanation for all this nonsense: Kagome is having a long silly nightmare.

Of course, that doesn’t make Moroha’s birth impossible.
