Chapter 13, Out of the Frying Pan

Summary: Kagome is from an affluent family. Inuyasha lives on the street. Tragedy at the death of her only remaining parent sees Kagome ousted from her home and sent to finishing school so she can prepare to be a wife- whether she likes it or not. Her head throbbed and her eyes were crusty and sore, but Aunt Tsubaki had zero sympathy, prodding her up out of bed bright and early.

“We’ve been invited to dinner at the Taisho estate. They never host anything, so you will put on your very best dress and be on your very best behavior. I won’t have you embarrassing the family, are we very clear?”

“Yes aunt Tsubaki.” Kagome groaned, dragging herself up from her sheets and rubbing her face.

With a sigh, she stared at the desk chair she’d spent too much time crying in last night before collapsing into her bed to cry some more.

Though his life had been mostly drudgery, Inuyasha couldn’t remember a time he’d been more miserable in his entire life.

He tugged on the silk tie wrapped and knotted around his neck, as well as the too-tight collar of the too-stiff shirt he’d been forced into.

His jacket and matching pants were made of a thick, expensive, overly starched material, and his shiny shoes pinched his toes. He’d been instructed to hold himself up straight, shoulders back, face fixed in a serene mask of pride, but he couldn’t stop fidgeting and pulling on his clothes, eyebrows drawn down in a thunderous scowl as sweat began to drip down his spine.

He hadn’t even found the courage to address the nightmare of the hat on top of his head, which was heavier and more rigid than the worn leather thing he always pulled over his ears.
