Dragon Model Redo - Planning
As I reviewed various projects, I decided to focus on reworking my Dracythr 3D print. I selected this piece due to my enjoyment of the 3D printing process and my eagerness to delve deeper into it. This choice offers me the chance to revisit mistakes from my initial attempt and create an improved design. Furthermore, having a physical representation of my enhancements serves as a tangible measure of my progress.
Whilst maintaining most of the original design of the Dracythr, I’ll be removing the wings, as they were the most problematic for me. Originally, I found them super clunky and sharp, which made them prone to misprints and damage. I want to focus on ensuring the body turns out right before working on complicated features like wings.
Looking back at the print, there are a couple of features I would want to change as well. Firstly, closing the mouth would be better to avoid small features like teeth being overlooked or broken off by supports. Thickening the legs and providing a support stand will help the dragon stand upright. To update the visuals of the dragon, I wanted to make the torso longer as it was incorrectly proportioned to the rest of the body. Additionally, I plan to make the scales far more prominent, as they smoothed out in the print itself. Finally, adding extra features like clothing or even a weapon would make for a much more interesting design overall.
To inspire my work in clothing, I researched multiple artworks to build up a design for my own character. I looked at Oehmichen’s "Alien Creature Design (Maat'Porak)" (2023), which I enjoyed for its visual elements like the armbands and tooth belt.
Taking inspiration from "Celea - Armor (Askar Mantle)" by Sakra (2017), I incorporated the idea of a long cloth hanging from a double-layer belt to give it a classic tribal appearance. The bones and bands around the wrists and ankles also help tie the concept together, making it a good addition to my own design as well.
