"It's a strange set up." He commented, "World class doctor. Technological prodigy... And then just a man. Hayden Loyal. No university degree. Just a man. A man who is acting heir to one of the richest families on the planet."
Odessa sighed, "I have full hiring permission." She told him, "And as long as you're in this base, I outrank you... So does Loyal, actually. Funny, huh?"
The supposed 'Captain' leaned conspiratorially toward her, "Doctor Halliway... I would urge you not to let your... affection for Mr Loyal cloud your judgement."
She replied simply, "Replace the guy in charge of security? God, no. He's the one with the Netflix password."
"I will not sway you on this, will I?"
Odessa exchanged slight smiles with the captain, "Not in a million years, no."
He took is leave in that moment. With a tip of his hat and a flourish of his coat. Odessa likened the exit to that of a magician's final performance. For one horrible minute the torments of childhood came back to her- Clowns, invoking lunacy. Acrobats, defying gravity itself. Ringmasters, demonstrating power beyond the realm of possibility.
She shuddered, "Nice trick, Captain."

"Stop it." She demanded, wrenching her wrist from his grasp. Loyal flinched as if he had been burned.
"I'm not that type of girl." Odessa told him, hurriedly brushing the sopping remnants of her bangs from her forehead, "I don't get love confessions in the pouring rain. So just... Stop it."
His chest heaved and, wild eyed, Loyal turned on his heel. He could not, however, compel his body to take a single step. With his back to her, he finally spoke.
"You really can't accept that I love you, can you?"
"I'm not that girl, Loyal."
"You could be."
She laughed. A short, bitter chuckle.
"I tried that."

"I'm getting old, Dess." Loyal's laughter, usually bright and playful, notably lacked any warmth or mirth, "If you're going to decide to let me in, I'd love if you did it before Dinah graduates uni." He paused, "Graduates, that is, at the top of her class. You get it."
Odessa swallowed. Her gloved hand dipped into the pocket of her coat, searching, always, for something or other.
"I get it."

Odessa paused, "Arthur, are you asking me that as a friend or a therapist?"
She thrust her hands into her pockets. Her breath mingled with Arthur's as they each crystalised in the night air. He tugged a yellow, sloppily knit scarf around his neck, gesturing for Odessa to sit on a lone park bench in the same motion. She rolled her eyes, continuing on at a brisk pace. Arthur begrudgingly trailed along, puffing uneven breaths.
He fought to match her pace, eventually grasping hold of her shoulder and forcing her to a stop.
"Friend or therapist?" She repeated, having spun in a fury to face him.
Arthur held her eye.
"Friend." He said, decisive as the rising run, "I'm only a psychiatrist which I'm getting paid."
"Extortionate." She replied, a soft smile gracing her lips.
"You the one who paid me." Arthur retorted, clutching a winning smile.
Odessa wretched her arm from his hold, "Well, you're the one who stuck around."
That he, admittedly, could not argue.
The truth about Odessa was that her very presence was intoxicating, tantalising, even addictive. Arthur often thought of her in comparison to nicotine. Nicotine, the substance everyone is aware will kill you, and yet millions adore it nonetheless.
Addiction, he concluded, only fuels existing delusion.

Loyal took this opportunity to lift Odessa clean off her feet. He spun her around in a fit of emotion, grinning all the while. Odessa squirmed in his hold for the briefest of moments then simply seemed to melt into him.
He returned her to the ground, beaming, and stated, "Brilliant. You are brilliant, Dess."
Her heels hit the tiled floor with sharp staccato notes, and her coat whirled around her figure. She, beaming also, responded, "I didn't do it all... I missed the posion, sure, but I didn't put it in anyone's drink."
"I don't like that phrase." He returned, reluctant to release her, "Why do doctors joke so much about killing their patients?"
She withdrew, shaking her head, "Darling, if I had a patient, I would kill them. I'll stick with the stiffs, thank you very much."
"That 'Stiff' used to be a person, you know."
Odessa took an impulsive step backward. Ice seeped into her cool tone, joyous moments previous, "Yeah. And because of me, you know exactly which person, she was."
This, Loyal had to concede. In reality, he cared not for her skill- She was not the only forensic psychologist available, though clearly the best- but rather for her own esteem.
He merely nodded, "Such brilliance shouldn't boast."
She shrugged, "I'm excluded. My brilliance excels my own opinion."
"That's hypocrisy, Dess."
She grinned in reply.

"High card wins?" Loyal proposed, the deck poised between his palms.
Odessa, reluctant despite, grinned, "Well, how could I say no?"
"Ethically, Dr Halliway." Marriot's head rose above the booth like that of a great serpent, "Are the two of you betting on your lunch break or have I started having vivid delusional episodes all of a sudden?"
"The main cause of a mental breakdown is stress." Loyal told him, "Working with Dess is undoubtedly stressful."
In turn, Odessa flashed Marriott a blinding grin, "It's a wonder you haven't started talking to dead people and seeing purple stars yet."
Marriot scowled, "Just... If you're going to place illegal bets, do it outside the building." He was met with blank stares, "Please?"

Marriot sighed, "Unfortunately, she is actually quite smart."
Odessa chuckled mockingly, "Try brilliant."
"I will do nothing of the kind." He returned, turning to Loyal for support, "Help me out here, man."
He strode to Odessa's side, mocking, "I will do nothing of the kind."
Loyal stood by Odessa, idly sipping from the Playboy Bunny mug he had been gifted a year previous during a rather awkward game of secret santa. He held Marriot's gaze sparingly, preferring to allow his gaze to flit between Odessa's lips and his own polished shoes.
Marriot conceded with a sigh, "Fine. With an IQ of 180, Dr. Odessa Halliway is technically a genius. Not my word, not my opinion."
Odessa clasped her hand together, "I'll take it!"

Loyal has two ways of saying Odessa's name:
'Odessa...'
Sweet, soft, affectionate
And
'ODESSA GRACE HALLIWAY-'
Frantic, desperate, disbelieving

"What did we do last night?" Loyal asked, eyes fixed on a napkin reading Call me for a good time... followed by a crude drawing of a rather lewd activity which I would rather not go into detail about. In any case, he had discovered it in his night gown pocket.
Odessa shielded her eyes from the burning sunlight, grimacing, "I think we're better off not knowing."
He agreed with a shrug, balling up the napkin and tossing it toward the waste basket. It landed on the carpet several inches away with a dull thud. Odessa laughed.
"Shut up." He told her, rising to retrieve it. If he did not do so then, he knew, it would lie until Caoimhe wandered in and made him clean his entire living space off the basis of one measly piece of litter.
Odessa watched him as he stood and quickly dissolved into a bout of giggles. He froze.
"Dess, if I got a drunken tattoo, you'd tell me, right?" She continued giggling like a drunken schoolgirl, "Odessa."
"I don't... It doesn't look permanent." She waited a moment to allow him to face her before continuing, "You'd be great as a hairy biker."
"I hate you."
She winked, "Good."

“Do you… What do you think about that? The afterlife?”
She raised her head.
“No.”
Her reply was simple, a muttered word, and yet it opened an infinite chasm in his chest. Each breath scarred and stung his lungs. Words lost to him, he merely nodded. The struck face of an idiot.
She was Odessa. Dr. Odessa Halliway, that is. A certified genius. She won a game-show at nineteen- One with a rather immense jackpot- and used the resulting fame and fortune to fund a wonderfully lavish university experience. Once qualified, she was promptly married, then divorced, just as prompt.
Then, as all good things arrive haphazardly, she met Hayden Loyal.
Now, her lipstick is on his collar and he, frankly, is some where between love-struck and star-struck, though his exact destination is hardly of import.
His eye strays, even now, to the hood of her eyes- chocolate-brown, flecked with gold-, the curve of her jaw, the cherry-red embellishment of her nails and the silver bracelets clinking on her wrist. She smiled and her teeth were slightly stained, the product of a decade chain-smoking.
He swallowed heavily, willing his mind to stray to another topic.

Loyal bowed his head. Odessa, idling by his side, took a sudden and keen interest in her nails. They were neatly filed, a deep shade of cherry-red which, rather pointedly, put her in mind of a certain image; Loyal's shirt collar, bearing the evidence of their night. She brought the heel of her hand to the corner of her mouth, self-conscious for reasons unheard.
"Sorry, Marriot." Loyal spoke softly, nudging Odessa with his elbow.
She, swift to her senses, added, "It, er, won't happen again?"
Marriot looked thoroughly unconvinced. He turned on his heel, beginning his stride toward the door of his office- Ajar, as he so often left it. Inviting, he thought.
Though, he had hardly taken a step before his voice pierced the silence, clear and deafening, "Your shirt is on inside-out, Dr. Halliway."
"It's a blouse." She replied weakly.
Lottie awaited him. She perched on his desk, iPad in hand. Her face, illuminated by a ghastly half-light, was dreamily idle. She did not glance at him as he sunk into the armchair by her legs. Merely, she smiled. A slight, lovely smile. A smile men would fight wars over.
"I know." He said, "My circus, my monkeys. Yeah."

Lennon and Ambrose are 'Stop smoking. You're killing yourself.'
And Odessa and Loyal are 'Stop smoking, I can't lose you.'

"Dr Odessa Halliway." Lottie read from her tablet, squinting behind the cover of her glasses, "Forensic pathologist. 31. Divorced. No kids. Next of kin is still listed as her ex husband."
Loyal, sprawled upon Marriot's black-leather sofa, inquired, "Doesn't this feel like... Slightly illegal to you?"
She rolled her eyes, "We're the police, Hayden."
"No shit. I just... It doesn't feel moral, okay?" He clasped his hands together in his lap. The scars among the dry skin of his knuckles served only as daunting reminders of incidents which he would prefer to forget. Stories he wished to tell Odessa one day, if she would let him.
"Oh!" Lottie exclaimed, "Jesus, her medical records. Listen to-"
He rose, cutting her off.
"I don't want to hear it, Lottie. Not unless she wants me to know."
Her eyes widened; An expression of panic.
"No," She laid a frenzied hand on his shoulder, "You want to hear this."
"She'll tell me about her scars when she is ready." Loyal replied simply, flexing one hand before him.
Lottie peered at him sceptically, "You're sure?"
He nodded and, finally, she surrendered.
"Just don't come to me when she breaks your heart."
Scooping his coat up with one hand, Loyal grinned and responded, "Won't happen!"

"Her name was Doctor Odessa Halliway and trust me, if you didn't use that title she would've slapped the face off you." Loyal could've laughed, "Believe it or not, your old dad was... Hell, I'm old enough to say it. In love with her. I was in love with Odessa."
Dinah grinned, "What happened to her, then? Three dates and she got a better offer?" Her jabs were recieved without humour.
"She was your godmother, you know." Hayden mastered the deflection, "Didn't believe in god for shit but she did it for me. For you. She felt like she was going to burst into flames at the church. Jumped the height of herself when the holy water brushed her hand."
Grinning, Dinah told him, "You never answered my question. Does that mean I'm right, then? An ending with tears and- and- oh, and fireworks! Yeah? She sounds like she-"
"Dinah, stop it." Truly, he couldn't bear another word from her lips, "She's dead. There. I said it. Remember when you were six and didn't see me for eight months? Remember how your mother wouldn't tell you a real reason why? Yeah, well, that was right after I buried her. No funeral. She would've thrown a hissy fit. I jus- Look, for six months I did not leave my house- her house. A house she bought with a man who wasn't me two years before she met me. It didn't matter, I was so wrapped up in my delusion. I kept telling myself we were finally getting that date. She was finally going to call me Hayden. She... She wasn't going to cry on April nineteenth anymore." Hayden focused on Dinah before him, wide-eyed and shaking.
"She's dead, Di... And I see a therapist once a week. Got it?"
For a moment, Dinah looked searchingly at her father. She never considered him to be an 'Old man' until that moment. She could finally bear witness to the years beyond his eyes and the weight upon his brow.
Silent and morose, she leaned her forehead against his shoulder. Just as Odessa had. "I'm sorry, daddy."
