Continuing in the legacy of Sleep, BelzebonG, Dopethrone, Weedeater, and Bongripper, comes OCULTUM -- not a new band, by any means. The Santiago three-piece outfit has been jamming dark, crunchy doom-laden vibes since 2009, with two albums already notched on the belt and a third on the way -- released by no less a label than Heavy Psych Sounds. 'Buena Muerte' (2024) features the morbid, possessed, grave-stomping rhythm section of Ricardo Robles on drums and Pablo Cataldo on bass, the latter joining Sebastián Bruna (guitar & vocals) as two of the longest running members of the group. Robles joined Ocultum in 2018, but that's still six years, so this team has had a chance to really solidify. Judging from their latest 12-minute single, the new album is going to be formidable.

"Last Weed on Earth" starts out slow, like a slumberer awaking to find he's got one joint left to his name, then the panic sets in and things get a bit, well, vicious. Let's let the band explain:

"Last Weed on Earth" is a song that evokes the concept of 70s songs where all the riffs and settings tell a story which lands in a fictional but no less possible place especially with the threat of war and nuclear apocalypse constantly looming over humanity: And when there's only one marijuana plant left on the planet? Who will be there to smoke it? Humans have sealed their fate but on the borders of space and sea another truth hides. "Last Weed on Earth" is our heavy journey loaded with acid blues intense riffs that won't let you think about a tomorrow for this failed humanity."

From the beginning, the riffage builds patiently and locks in with single-minded focus, buttressed by a deadly, determined beat. The song ends on a zoned-in headbanging pulse, emanating an irradiated low-end that will tickle the eardrums of any fuzz lover.

Incidentally, the band contributed to our massive survey of Chilean heavy music on Doomed & Stoned in Chile during the pandemic and it's great to see them going strong into the new year, when you can expect to find these five new abysmally awesome tracks. Releasing February 28th on vinyl, CD, and digital via Heavy Psych Sounds (pre-order here). Recorded at Plex Studios in Santiago, mastered by Esben Willems of Monolord at Studio Berserk in Sweden.

SOME BUZZ

OCULTUM started when they decided to enter the studio to record their debut album titled 'Ceremonia Oculta Primitiva' (2015), this material was reworked and, after many hours, it was finally released in a self-produced deluxe edition of Digipack CD Pro 3 panels (500 copies sold out) and on Pro Tape by Manifectation Records of Antofagasta (100 copies sold out).

After some changes the group decided to continue as a trio and in 2019, OCULTUM released their second album 'RESIDUE,' 4 extremely heavy songs/trips that reach 50 minutes crushing silence, with a psychedelic and valve production, this album takes you to their own characteristic sound, a hard vision of how Doom, Stoner and Sludge should sound at the end of the planet. It has been released on Tape and Vinyl on Interstellar Smoke Records (Poland), on Pro Tape by Manifectation Records from Antofagasta (100 copies sold out) and on CD on Black Bow Records (England) being signed directly by the label owner, John Davis, vocalist of the brutal doom band, Conan. In his words: "Honestly, if you think that Doom is dying and is becoming too modern and dependent on generic reference points, then you should check it out because Ocultum will fucking KILL you."

The band says: "We are currently releasing with force and conviction our third album, 'Buena Muerte,' a concatenated anthem that explores death as a central theme, highlighting its benevolence towards a human being who cries out in all ways for its inevitable extinction. 'Buena Muerte' is, in turn, an experiment in resurgent creativity where a vibe of the 70s, metal and chaos converge, on the dilapidating base of the heavy and crushing doom stoner that OCULTUM sacredly cultivates."

The Sister Jo & Ruby subplot was very funny on the metatextual level, just with them being married to Jackles & Jarpad irl.

DEAN: So I'm thinking maybe [JACK] kills [AMARA], too. Seriously. 'Cause listen, if we just take Chuck off the board, that still leaves her, okay? That throws things out of balance, and if things are out of balance, then the world pretty much – SAM: Yeah, ends. Right. DEAN: But if Jack kills her... Kind of a family plan. Then there's no God, there's no Darkness. Nothing out of balance. World saved. SAM: Okay, yeah, but then who takes over? Uh, Jack? [JACK enters, chewing gum. He blows a bubble and pops it, grinning proudly] JACK: I just learned how to do that. DEAN: Probably not.

Foreshadowing that Jack will actually take over at the end of the season -- Sam and Dean underestimate Jack and still see him as a kid, while the rest of the season is Jack’s final coming of age arc and Jack saving the world by coming into his own power and taking on God’s power in the process. No more Chuck as a bad God, instead it’s Jack as a good God.

DEAN: Guys, I don't like it, alright? I mean, first Jo sets us up with the – with killer demons, and now Ruby sends us to a place with Hellhounds? These chicks want us dead. I don't trust any part of this. [he turns to JACK] Where's the thing? JACK: Um, I ate it. DEAN: You what? JACK: Well, it said it had to be in me, so – DEAN: No! Spit it out...

Jack has a very... ‘holy fool’ is maybe a bit much, but his naivete is framed as a kind of wisdom, in contrast to Sam, Dean or Cas. They’ve all lived a long time, so they have a certain world-weariness that Jack doesn’t. I like it, and it makes Jack’s character more compelling to me.

[In the Garden, a SNAKE approaches Jack] SNAKE: Who are you, really? Who are you meant to be? ... DEAN: So, Jack's back? CASTIEL: Yeah, he is. But, um, something's different. Jack is, uh – well, he's been to the Garden. That's the crossroads of divinity and humanity. No one's been there since the exile till now. Till Jack. [Cas, Dean, and Sam walk in. Jack is sitting at the kitchen table, hands together, looking down. Cas, Dean, and Sam stand a couple of steps away, watching him with concern.] SAM: Hey, Jack. How you doing? JACK: I... I'm so sorry. DEAN: You what? JACK: Why didn't I get it? I mean, my mother died, too. Why didn't I understand? It was my fault. DEAN: Jack... CASTIEL: His soul is back. JACK: Please. Just please forgive me. [SAM and DEAN look at him, both sad. SAM sighs, in pain. JACK looks back down. DEAN, silent, is looking at JACK, with sadness, … and perhaps, relief.]

And so Jack’s soul, his humanity, is returned, so now he can finally face his actions, his guilt, his regret, all his feelings, good & bad. Obviously evoking the Adam & Eve story, too; not just in Jack literally returning to the Garden of Eden, but also in his eating the ocultum which gives him a painful understanding of human feelings, just like Adam & Eve eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge gave them a new understanding and eventual pain.

A těch pár přátel, co máš či jsi měl, žijí vlastní životy a věnují se kariérám nebo rodinám. A tak se cítíš často osamělý a bez radosti. Svého o 9 let maldšího partnera máš ze srdce rád, jeho chování tě někdy naprosto vytáčí, ale stydíš se mu to říct. Nesnášíš se někoho o něco doprošovat, raději si uděláš všechno sám. Možná proto míváš poslední dobou často pocity, že tě ostatní lidé jen využívají a tak se jim raději straníš. Asi jsi přestal lidem úplně věřit.

I find it very interesting that in season 15, Dean gets to go on and on and on some more about their lives being manipulated by Chuck.  A hamster on a wheel is used multiple times throughout the season.  But arguably,  Sam was treated the worst out of all of them and yet he just sits by and we have to listen to angry Dean until the end.  I realize that they were trying to get Dean to a better place by the end, but it sucks that they decided to cram it all into the last season.  

I don’t know why I expected it to change that they would allow Sam to be angry at about the things that were done to him, but it would have been nice since it was the last season if they let him actually let loose a little rather than having to listen to Dean bitch about it to anyone who was stuck listening.  So much potential that was squandered on terrible episodes about Ocultums and Wolf fight clubs.

oh dear, let's say... the dabb episodes all sucked and since jack only appeared in dabb era, i dislike most of the episodes and arcs, but i love the jack moments. his entrance... huhhhhhhh "father?"... just kill me here and now. Epic.

I liked his soulless arc, too. The episode where he's on the zombie boyfriend case with dean and asking him about sex, that was really cute and funny.

15.13 with the ocultum, oh god, the aesthetic and the whole mystery (mystery was created because dabb just retconned the shit out of everything...), and OF COURSE 15.08 that HUG WITH SAM. GOD.
