Fun in the Frostlands!

It may be cold and snowy outside, but that won't stop these travelers from having fun in the Frostlands! Whether you're getting a present from Nicola not-Santa, picking up some medicinal plants, having a friendly duel, or getting dragged around by your bestie Rondo, you'll make fast friends in no time!

After about a month, I finally finished this piece this morning! I had a blast drawing all 23 (I can't believe it's that many!) of these Frostlands travelers, and I'm really happy with how this turned out. I've already done a few practice doodles for the Riverlands travelers, so I'll continue those and eventually start the Riverlands piece.

I just finished playing FFXVI. I've kept a twitter thread on non spoiler thoughts here but this post is strictly on SPOILERS so be warned!!

First thing I want to state is that I played this with Japanese voices! I plan on watching lets plays of it which usually have it in English. I will do an update or a separate post once I've seen a full playthrough just to compare.

Combat I never played DMC5 so I don't know how that plays. I've played this without any of the accessibility accessories since I wanted to have a challenge. Its definitely not as hard or frustrating as Dark Souls. Even after playing probably 60+ hours I still find the dodge timing hard. Fighting giant beasts was the most frustrating. It was hard for me to get hits in. The gameplay does remind me alot of ff14 since there's your combos and cooldowns so I often spam buttons. Commanding Torgal does remind me of Nier Automata with commanding the pod but I didn't use Torgal as much as I probably should. It was hard to pick which eikon skills to keep. I mostly kept the high attack ones to spam when staggered. I really like the Bahamut laser beam since it does huge damage. I really like the look of Odin's but it was hard to use.

The Eikon fights were mostly cinematic which is fine. The arenas were quite busy and even busier with the spell effects lol Its very Kaiju battle or even Attack on Titan like. I didn't ever die during them. But as regular Clive I did die a handful of times and luckily the game is nice enough to have checkpoints and give you full inventory of potions. I died more times in Hunts than msq boss fights. I played Octopath 2 a couple months ago which is a turn based game. There's a secret boss that took me over an hour to fight it so I appreciate that FF16 doesn't make me do that, but it is also much easier in comparison. I did find the final boss fights underwhelming, but it does have some annoying af moves that I have no idea how to avoid getting hit by. The fight with Titan is my favorite just for the song and how neat it all was!

STORY Its was quite a ride, but it hasn't moved me as much as FF14 did. The sidequests got me more than the msq. Mostly since they're chains and you spend a lot more time with these characters than the enemy dominants themselves. I like the sidequests ladies more than Jill. I wish they didn't have her get captured multiple times lol I thought she was going to die to give Clive her Shiva powers but seems like you can just give it to him. Jill is an ok character. I wish they did a bit more with her but she ended up having to stay behind. There was a scene or two where she watches instead of helping that bothered me more than it should lol

Having Clive take up Cid's name surprised me. And to have some of the folks in the hideaway call him that too took me a bit to get use to. I did not expect Cid to die so soon or at all. And to have the hideaway destroyed gave me FF14 waking sands vibes.

Dion being gay and having a kissing scene surprised me and wish they do this in FF14! I'm glad they did an obvious gay couple with no stereotyping in a mainline FF game. I did not expect him to last as long as he did since the others died so quick. Quite a tragic character too. I was hoping he'd make it.

I love uncle Byron! What a great character and unexpected comedy relief lol I loved him almost immediately and also feared for his life. So I was very relived that not a single hair in his body was harmed in this game!

I'm glad Joshua is alive! I had a feeling since he seemed too important to just be a memory. Though I don't understand who the hooded figure is in the flashback that Clive saw. Also don't understand why he avoided Clive till the fight with Bahamut. Idk what he sounds like in eng yet but his jp voice is really nice. I was worried he was going to die again and it did upset me when it did happen. For Clive to have all his memories of him flash before his eyes was emotional. And for him to get resurrected and write a book called Final Fantasy in the post credits pleased me.

They did the Sephiroth route with the main antagonist, Ultima. Where they appear throughout the story to mess with you. I thought there might be a surprise never-heard-of last boss but no its all Ultima. I didn't find them to be the most interesting villain since its another alien god being. I did like the argument at the end that they're just the same as human.

Clive is a good boy! Judging by the subtitles eng Clive seems to have a different vibe than jp Clive. Jp Clive's voice has that smooth, kind, and strong quality. He's very much like a wol who chooses the good guy choice. I didn't expect him to die. To have the red star fade and Torgal crying does seem to confirm that he's gone. Definitely not the happiest ending. Idk if the Blight is still a problem lol

With the logo having both Phoenix and Ifrit the story is definitely about the brothers. It seems to come full circle with the beginning having them fight each other and in the end they're one. Joshua dies in the beginning, Clive dies at the end. Makes me wish there were more brotherly moments between them than the sidequest.

Overall I enjoyed FF16! I don't think I'd rate it higher than FF14 or FF7 but its definitely an improvement from FF15. While FF15 did make me cry a lot more than FF16 did, the eye candy that is Clive is really what sells the game to me lol

There was no Cactuar or tonberries! :(

Also the vibrations on the PS5 is rather neat. I've kept it on just because I've heard people say how good it is. The vibrations are happening most of the time in cutscenes but sometimes I don't notice it at all. Its not at all like previous controllers where it rumbles and be annoying. I usually turn it off but I think I wont do that for the PS5 controller.

Favorite Characters and why go. I am so sorry for the long list and the long reasonings:

Hikari from Octopath Traveler 2: I just see myself in that character a lot and I love him a lot. It's just the struggle is incredibly relatable and stuff. I have many feelings about him and *screams into pillow* Many feelings. No words.

Oboro from Octopath Traveler 2: Something's wrong with him and I'm fascinated by that. I would push him off the stairs but I am deeply fascinated by him.

Castti from Octopath Traveler 2: She's just- Also many feelings no words. I have many feelings and- I'm glad she chooses to help despite the pain it might cause. I'm glad and I love her.

Hunter and Amity from The Owl House: I also see myself in these characters and they're very much kids who were in real shitty situations and turned out okay in the end. They turned out okay and I like how they're handled in terms of the fact that they were antagonists for a while before becoming protagonists. They also shown that you don't need to love your blood family and I can't relate to that but it's comforting to know that you don't have any obligation to do that. Love is a two-way street and you aren't obligated to care for people who are fucking shitty to you and they chose not to associate themselves with their respective shitty guardians anymore. They could forgive them but they realized that's stupid and that those people won't change so. Yeah. Also the gender envy from Amity and the Unapologetic Dork vibes from Hunter those are very important.

Quirrel from Hollow Knight: He's just a Bean. A bean that goes and has an ambiguous end but a lovely little bean.

Joker from Persona: Sassy ass Thief who doesn't let his justifiable anger for society consume him. Clothes Envy. Many feelings. Very good. Very great.

Jonathan Sims and Martin Blackwood from The Magnus Archives: I...can not say why I love them without spoilers. I do say though Jon is a canon asexual character and Martin Blackwood is someone who is soft and proves that softness isn't a weakness. Oh and they're dating.

Joshua Gillespie from The Magnus Archives: Okay this one is technically just a one-off character but in The Magnus Archives he went and fucking escaped a cosmic horror entity by saying "No". He had a fucking spooky coffin in his house that tried to get him to open it and climb in, and he said "No", put the Key in water and in ice, and then just. Lived with it for a year or something. Then he just went on with his life after giving the Coffin away.

Evan Lukas from the Magnus Archives: I SWEAR I WILL STOP TALKING ABOUT THE PODCAST BUT THIS IS ANOTHER ONE-OFF CHARACTER AND- *screams into pillow* His family is shitty. It's shitty and he hated everything his family stood for and so he left. He left and married the love of his life and then he uh...died. That's tragic. What is done afterwards though is the fact that he went and met his wife through the fact that he realized that she was lonely and didn't want that to happen to her. And when his wife got caught up in a Fog that seems to prey on that Loneliness, he came from beyond the grave and guided her out. His family would have lead her further in and told her that she is lonely and she will die alone but he didn't do that to her. He loved her and he loved her beyond the grave. He loved her so much.

Hat Girl from A Hat In Time: I don't know why I love her but just. *shakes her a lot* I love her.

Toph from Avatar the Last Airbender: She's Toph and she's charming and I love her attitude and her character and the fact that she declares herself to be the greatest Earbender and is indeed the greatest Earthbender.

Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place: I can't say a lot about her without a fuck ton of spoilers but I am so happy that she was a bit of an asshole at first and slowly got better and that the show acknowledges she's an asshole. She gets better by the end of the show and it isn't at the cost of her personality. She's still Eleanor, it's just now the best version of herself.

The Honkai Star Rail MC: They're feral and they're a bit unhinged and they're a prankster and something is wrong with them but you know I would be more surprised if something wasn't wrong with them considering they have a bomb stuck inside them.

Character!Sam from Dream SMP: A man who cares a lot about his friends burdens himself with responsibilities and slowly gets more and more obsessed over them and loses his friends and morals due to his duties.

Character!Wilbur from Dream SMP: He's a guy who was idealistic at first and just. Slowly got worse with the pressure of being a leader and then dragged everyone down with him. He blew up his country. He needs help. He went and started a rivalry with his ex candidate rival. He cares about his family. He apparently married a fish. His mum is a Samsung Refrigerator. He's a bit unhinged. I love him and he needs so many hugs.

I can't comment on a few of these without getting irrationally angry but. Yeah Hikari and Hunter rock 👍

Calling the first character Character A and the second character Character B, here’s my analysis of the ship dynamic:

Character A - A character who is mischievous, above average intelligence, sneaky, plays things very close to the vest but is at their core a good person. They don't always advertise it and may be the anti-hero or even the villain. They often act self-righteous and can cross into haughty or arrogant. They enjoy wordplay and puns and have a rather sick sense of humor. They may or may not derive some amount of joy from other's suffering but only when it's deserved. They have a strong sense of justice and only enjoy suffering when it's happening to someone powerful or truly evil. They do not like suffering when it's done to marginalized people or groups. If you put them in charge of a country, they would be very efficient and fair at running it. They are a natural leader. They are often a "mastermind" of sorts. They are willing and able to do almost anything to get their goals met and are likely an atheist and a moral relativist. They subscribe to a very distinct philosophy that may be difficult for others to grasp, which causes them to be misunderstood as villainous when they are really just antagonistic. As much as they would like to be seen or don't mind being seen as morally ambiguous, deep down they may have abandonment issues or just deeply wish to be sentimentally and tenderly loved. When they have allegiance to someone, that allegiance will often be very strong, or they may even have a history of being abused (case in point, Talia Al Ghul’s relationship with her father). Physically, they may or may not be very strong and prefer to use their tactical brains over brawn. They are a distinct INTJ/Virgo. They have a low bullshit tolerance but are otherwise very laid back. They may or may not have certain autistic or OCD tendencies depending on the context.

Character B - A character who is basically a “himbo” or stereotypical hero. They are often, paradoxically, quite smart, but often choose brawn over using their brain. They feel things very intensely and have big, dumb hearts masked by a somewhat rough exterior. They may have a rough past history. They are what you would think of as a more stereotypical "hero" archetype - wants to save everyone but not willing to sacrifice their moral fiber to do it, which is a distinct departure from Character A's philosophy. Character A may mock them for being too morally objective or puritanical. They will break down a door or bust a hole through a wall to save someone - anyone, even somebody they don't even know. But put their loved one in danger, especially Character A, and oh, boy. You better run! Fiercely protective, they have a one-track mind in a dangerous situation and will use brute strength in conjunction with smart and quick decisions to decisively end the fight or situation. They are only slightly better at productive communication than Character A, and depending on the situation, they are actually worse. B is often seen as a loner, brooding, a "gentle giant" or even a silent brute to some. However, B has a complex and emotional inner life with a big heart and a desire to nurture and care for those around them. This makes them a good candidate for caring for others, especially children and animals who tend to get along with them very well.

What these two share distinctly in common is that other people do not understand what they have going on at all. Others may comment that they're not even sure what A sees in B or what B sees in A - especially because they tend to run in different social circles. While their friends and family are left scratching their heads in sort of a Romeo/Juliet situation, these two are deeply devoted to each other. They understand each other perfectly because they both wish to retreat from society and take care of each other. A worries about B being so pig-headed and stubborn and charging into dangerous situations wherein they could be hurt. B worries about A being hurt or threatened by any external force and may at times see A as physically "fragile" (which A abhors and will usually talk B out of). That being said, B always knows that A is more than capable of taking care of themselves and is no slouch in a fight. When they fight together, one may well jump in front of the other to take a bullet, even when the other insists that they didn't need to. What they both share in common is a distinct desire to "save the world". They won't accuse each other of having delusions of grandeur, because they both very much want the same thing - to care for the world around them. They would make a good pair of leaders and if given the opportunity to take over the world, they would be unstoppable (and quite well received by everyone, too). Each balances out the other's tendencies. They often have opposing viewpoints on how best to achieve their goals, and are not afraid to debate or challenge the other's preconceived notions. They are also both open to reconsider their own ideas knowing that the other is their intellectual equal. The feedback of the other carries very heavy weight with them, and they consider the other's opinion very carefully over anyone else's. They deeply trust and love each other and their love only grows with time. As they age, they only grow a stronger and stronger relationship like an old-growth tree.
