October baseball

It's a golden afternoon in October. I'm lounging on my deck, my little transistor radio tuned to the sweet rhythms of balls-and-strikes, the crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd.

October is a month in which most baseball fans must grapple with disappointment as they turn their eyes to the glory of playoff baseball and see only those other teams - not their team.

I know the feeling well. It's been 10 years since my Detroit Tigers played beyond September. Believe me - I'm soaking it up in the same way I'm soaking up the last warm rays of October sunshine.

LIke the autumn rains, disappointment may get here soon enough, but I'm all about hope right now and it feels great.
