As far back as 1933, Edwin S. George recognized that a house of worship was needed in the area surrounding his home. He established the George Foundation for that very purpose. In 1947, the Kirk in the Hills congregation was established by the Presbytery of Detroit. That same year, Mr. George donated his 41-acre estate, which is situated on Island Lake. Wirt C. Rowland submitted preliminary designs for a church building pre-World War II. However, Rowland's untimely death in 1946 resulted in changes; the church went with George D. Mason & Company to complete the plans. Eugene T. Cleland was the lead architect. The cornerstone for the new building was laid in 1951, the same year Edwin S. George died. His remains are interred under the narthex of the building's sanctuary. Beginning in 1952, services were held in the undercroft during construction until a horrible fire destroyed most of the roof. Following the fire, the parish worshipped at a local high school. More than a decade after forming, Kirk held its first services in the sanctuary on November 23, 1958. The building is modeled after Melrose Abbey in Scotland. In terms of ecclesiastical architecture, it is a towering achievement. Kirk in the Hills also marks the end of an era. Grace sent to juvenile facility for not turning in homework. [Please sign the change petition,it is in my bio] --- Per the article she was doing her work, she also asked for one on one help from the teacher. Her teacher says that she was doing well. She had permission to do her work at her own pace, and the work was supposed to be turned in at end of the semester. The semester was not over, how can she be accused of not doing work, when what she had done the teacher said was fine.. 15% of the county's youth is black, yet 42% of cases that went to Oakland court were black - -and per the article they are less likely to be offered any type of diversion, removed from home and sent to a facility--just as we are seeing in Grace's case. We have to band together as a community for our Black children. If this did not happen to her, it could have been my child or your child. But doing something we are putting them on notice saying, we see what you are doing, it is not right, and we will not stop until it is corrected. They are not even giving our children a chance, they are already sentencing them to the system as a child. We have learn the effects of confinement for adults, why are we doing this to our children? Other ways have to be found to hold children accountable for behavior, besides locking them up. Chapter 1

NORTH FOX ISLAND, MICHIGAN

Off the coast of Michigan lies an island two miles wide and one mile long. It holds a quaint beach with warm sands and a tree-line full of oaks and pine. During the summer, the water is welcoming, and the dock promises adventure whether one is about to take the plunge off or just getting on the island. In the 70’s, the island was owned by multimillionaire Francis Sheldon, a prominent figure in Michigan. Sheldon, being the pillar of the community, opened a youth camp for troubled boys on the island. Free of charge, free transportation, and even funded by the government, the island was a haven for parents who didn’t know how to help their unruly sons.

At least it seemed that way, that is until 1976 when an 8-year old resident boy of the island was brought to the hospital. He was so badly beaten and assaulted that he couldn’t even talk. However, once he could, he revealed unimaginable horrors.

Within days, the camp was shut down and getting raided for being one of the biggest child pornography and assault rings in the country. Prominent figures everywhere from educational roles to CEO's to government officials were named as clients and paid to do with the boys as they wanted.

Warrants were issued, suspects named, and the victims’ families waited for what was to come.

But that’s just it, nothing ever happened.

Warrants were not pursued on the suspects until weeks after most of them had time to flee the country, charges were never pressed, and the case was closed. They were reopened after a couple of months when the victims’ families started asking questions again, only to be told nothing could be done.

OAKLAND COUNTY, MICHIGAN

In the same year, 1976, children throughout Detroit and the surrounding areas of Oakland county began to go missing. First, 12-year-old Mark in February of 76, then 12-year-old Jill in December of 76, January of 77 brought 10-year-old Chris, then March of 77 it was 11-year-old Tim. All the children had been suffocated after being fed and bathed. All were dumped on the side of the road in various snowbanks, always a town over from where they were taken. Only the boys had been sexually assaulted.
