Growing up in the the Bay Area was an exciting experience in the 90s and early 2000s. The streets were wild and yet fun. With Sideshows in front of Ben's burgers after the Raiders won, festivals and street faires. Lake Merritt was the place to be. Sun, fun and food. Now the streets are filled with violence, police presence, drugs, pimps, and hoes. Sports were popular to us because thats all we had. The Raiders, A's and Warriors. Literally taking away the only thing we had left to be proud of, GENTRIFICATION AND TECHIE TAKEOVER BECAME REAL. WHAT DO WE DO NOW? THAT OUTSIDERS ARE NOT HAPPY WITH WHAT MAKES US HAPPY!?!
WHAT DO YOU DO AT THAT POINT!! Alot of us werent raised in a household that taught us how to be financially Literate! That's but another story for another day.
But there was We have failed the younger generation, there is a lack of morals. Leaving them with a wild and outlandish environment. Bipping (Breaking into a car) cars in ABSOLUTE PUBLIC DAYLIGHT IS INSANE!! STEALING CATALITIC CONVERTORS. RANDOMLY VICTIMIZNG OLDER ASIAN PEOPLE. FOR WHAT?
Oakland was an underdog city, with the Black Panthers, musicians, athletes, and artists all coming from the area. The FOODIE LIFE IS STILL ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, a unique vibe and culture.
Unfortunately, the recession and the COVID-19 pandemic have hit the area hard, leaving some without homes or jobs or even both. leaving people feeling bored and wishing there were more things for adults to do. You have to refine to re find!!

What is your opinion of AI?
20-50% of what chatGPT says is just patently false haha these days it strikes me that the main proper use of Ai is mocking fascist and making jokes...
we definitely need people of more diverse backgrounds making decisions about where AI goes, right now it's programmed by a lot of white tech guys who usually have racial blind spots, and are accustomed to releasing half baked prototypes, then iterating/improving post-release, but that leaves us with today's AI being hardwired with racist biases...
ultimately I think it's kind of a weird misnomer for computers just getting more advanced, and it's an issue to watch as companies give "AI" algorithms the keys to their castle, like United HealthCare (UHC) maybe the 2nd biggest health insurance company in the USA denying 90% of valid claims because "(a racist) algorithm told us to"
This really isn't the fault if AI, it's greedy investors, lying sales executives, fraudulent decision makers at UHC and similar companies passing the buck of their usual mistreatment of others around into a complex black box
...so same story really as decades ago, Moore's law continues to manifest, computers are getting more powerful, scam artists are using them in new ways, big healthcare is denying valid claims, these are headlines you could have taken from the 1970s but they still describe today's situation...not much cause for alarm but indeed concern and antiracist attention and corrective efforts.
#on ai#tldr#we need way more people of diverse backgrounds in tech#i'm a big fan of the group in Oakland CA#Black Girls Code#look them up and consider donating to them!!

The CFPB is genuinely making America better, and they're going HARD
On June 20, I'm keynoting the LOCUS AWARDS in OAKLAND.
Let's take a sec here and notice something genuinely great happening in the US government: the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau's stunning, unbroken streak of major, muscular victories over the forces of corporate corruption, with the backing of the Supreme Court (yes, that Supreme Court), and which is only speeding up!
A little background. The CFPB was created in 2010. It was Elizabeth Warren's brainchild, an institution that was supposed to regulate finance from the perspective of the American public, not the American finance sector. Rather than fighting to "stabilize" the financial sector (the mission that led to Obama taking his advisor Timothy Geithner's advice to permit the foreclosure crisis to continue in order to "foam the runways" for the banks), the Bureau would fight to defend us from bankers.
The CFPB got off to a rocky start, with challenges to the unique system of long-term leadership appointments meant to depoliticize the office, as well as the sudden resignation of its inaugural boss, who broke his promise to see his term through in order to launch an unsuccessful bid for political office.
But after the 2020 election, the Bureau came into its own, when Biden poached Rohit Chopra from the FTC and put him in charge. Chopra went on a tear, taking on landlords who violated the covid eviction moratorium:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/20/euthanize-rentier-enablers/#cfpb
Then banning payday lenders' scummiest tactics:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/01/29/planned-obsolescence/#academic-fraud
Then striking at one of fintech's most predatory grifts, the "earned wage access" hustle:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/01/usury/#tech-exceptionalism
Then closing the loophole that let credit reporting bureaus (like Equifax, who doxed every single American in a spectacular 2019 breach) avoid regulation by creating data brokerage divisions and claiming they weren't part of the regulated activity of credit reporting:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/16/the-second-best-time-is-now/#the-point-of-a-system-is-what-it-does
Chopra went on to promise to ban data-brokers altogether:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/13/goulash/#material-misstatement
Then he banned comparison shopping sites where you go to find the best bank accounts and credit cards from accepting bribes and putting more expensive options at the top of the list. Instead, he's requiring banks to send the CFPB regular, accurate lists of all their charges, and standing up a federal operated comparison shopping site that gives only accurate and honest rankings. Finally, he's made an interoperability rule requiring banks to let you transfer to another institution with one click, just like you change phone carriers. That means you can search an honest site to find the best deal on your banking, and then, with a single click, transfer your accounts, your account history, your payees, and all your other banking data to that new bank:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/21/let-my-dollars-go/#personal-financial-data-rights
Somewhere in there, big business got scared. They cooked up a legal theory declaring the CFPB's funding mechanism to be unconstitutional and got the case fast-tracked to the Supreme Court, in a bid to put Chopra and the CFPB permanently out of business. Instead, the Supremes – these Supremes! – upheld the CFPB's funding mechanism in a 7-2 ruling:
https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/05/supreme-court-lets-cfpb-funding-stand/
That ruling was a starter pistol for Chopra and the Bureau. Maybe it seemed like they were taking big swings before, but it turns out all that was just a warmup. Last week on The American Prospect, Robert Kuttner rounded up all the stuff the Bureau is kicking off:
https://prospect.org/blogs-and-newsletters/tap/2024-06-07-window-on-corporate-deceptions/
First: regulating Buy Now, Pay Later companies (think: Klarna) as credit-card companies, with all the requirements for disclosure and interest rate caps dictated by the Truth In Lending Act:
https://www.skadden.com/insights/publications/2024/06/cfpb-applies-credit-card-rules
Next: creating a registry of habitual corporate criminals. This rogues gallery will make it harder for other agencies – like the DOJ – and state Attorneys General to offer bullshit "delayed prosecution agreements" to companies that compulsively rip us off:
https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-creates-registry-to-detect-corporate-repeat-offenders/
Then there's the rule against "fine print deception" – which is when the fine print in a contract lies to you about your rights, like when a mortgage lender forces you waive a right you can't actually waive, or car lenders that make you waive your bankruptcy rights, which, again, you can't waive:
https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-warns-against-deception-in-contract-fine-print/
As Kuttner writes, the common thread running through all these orders is that they ban deceptive practices – they make it illegal for companies to steal from us by lying to us. Especially in these dying days of class action suits – rapidly becoming obsolete thanks to "mandatory arbitration waivers" that make you sign away your right to join a class action – agencies like the CFPB are our only hope of punishing companies that lie to us to steal from us.
There's a lot of bad stuff going on in the world right now, and much of it – including an active genocide – is coming from the Biden White House.
But there are people in the Biden Administration who care about the American people and who are effective and committed fighters who have our back. What's more, they're winning. That doesn't make all the bad news go away, but sometimes it feels good to take a moment and take the W.

This whole thread is honestly just beautiful but that last quote there is just so revealing. "Silicon Valley Thought Leaders and CEOs are going to take over the Republican party via the vessel of Donald Trump" is a level of delusion such that buying into it permanently strips you of any possible claim you had to the title "elite". Parties are made of...politicians? And voters? They have opinions! Like that was the entire Trump strategy, that Republicans were ignoring key issues their voters were demanding on things like trade so he swept those voters out from under them. And Mister Ngo up here thinks that voting base, with the Republican party Donald Trump has been purging of dissent for four years, is gonna to delivery technocracy to America. Amazing.
There is an incredibly revealing quote farther up when he starts discussing how "Silicon Valley now donates Republican" (Which btw is like a few dozen super rich guys):
"Democrats maintained the support of intellectual elites and that is how they won elections" just holy shit. Dems, of course, have struggled mightily with the albatross around their necks that are their so-called elites, but I think you can see the ideological underpinnings here. My read is that Monsieur Ngo is someone who thinks that the "Woke Elite" actually controlled the Democratic Party. That they took over, and ran the show, and dictated terms vis a vis the Elite Media and all that. So Republicans, once they get their own elite, can fight back.
Which is of course a belief one can only have if they live in San Francisco, and by that I mean they live on Twitter in a bedroom in San Francisco and talk solely to bloggers and tech workers. The Dems certainly had the wokes in the coalition, they gave them a win or two, but primarily because their stakes were so small - that is the entire core of the problem Social Justice as a movement had, their focus was so symbolic and internal. On issues that actually mattered like say immigration Obama & Biden both beat out Trump on deportations, they boosted arms sales to allies abroad, and so on and so on. But because the Oakland School District shot itself in the foot banning advanced math classes before immediately beating the retreat in the face of mass voter resistance, these guys think they were the Grand Vizier in the White House, and two can play at that game! The one he just made up, of course.
(The other ideological underpinning of note is authoritarianism as an obstacle-sweeper for large-scale changes dictated by a fringe minority incapable of getting wider buy-in but definitely capable of dominating the inner political circle. That has historically worked out great, so no notes on that part.)
Anyway this is the "ratjacency" faction of the Trump coalition, incredibly tiny but personally offensive to me, so it is fun to laugh at them. And yes, nutpicking is bad, mocking people is bad, I know - this is election week, I am giving myself a pass okay! Gonna try to enjoy it.

(Oakland Bay Area, California) Hi, my name is Mika! I am a 4 year old male, indoor grey American rabbit. I was gifted to my current parent as a surprise in the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, when she needed extra love and support when we all had to isolate. I was so glad to find a home, but my mom unfortunately is accepting a new job where she will be living on land and they do not allow pets. I am really hoping to find a safe home where I am loved just as much (if not more) as I have been the last 4 years.
I am up to date with my RHDV vaccine, desexed, no current health issues, and am litter box trained!
I’ve been told by vet techs that I am the most friendly rabbit they’ve met :) I am also food / treat driven (love me some blueberries and carrots especially), so if you ever want my attention - the key is treats! Like most rabbits I am most active in the mornings and evenings. During the day you will find me napping under my mom’s bed or couch. I would thrive in a home where I can (mostly) free roam, although I do have a hutch that I like to use as my home base for my litter box and will sometimes use to nap ~ with the doors open. I love humans, I find that I am very curious about them and will accept pets from most strangers, I especially love being pet on my cheeks and head. I am currently located in Oakland, California. My parent is willing to drive a few hours to make sure that I find the right home. I come with my hutch, litter box, two brushes to be used especially during molting season, and an emergency kit for if I ever get GI stasis (thankfully has never happened to me!) Rehoming fee: $20
Reach out to Sabrina at [email protected] if you would like more information or to schedule a time to meet me

Wanderlust
Part 1 of the Wanderlust Series.
Wanderlust Masterlist | Complete Masterlist
Summary: You try to convince your best friend to go on a long road trip with you. Pairing: Bucky x Female Reader Word Count: 694 (a drabble, really) Warnings: Fluff. ALL fluff. A/N: This is for @the-slumberparty June Monthly Challenge: Summer Vibes. I picked a tent (can the VW Bus be considered a tent?) and the Road setting. I don't know if I should continue with the story. I mean, I have some ideas, but I don't think there's an actual plot...lol. Edit: It's decided...it's now a series...I hope y'all are happy!
The one thing you wanted to do before you started your new job was to visit the national parks in your state. You graduated with honors and had multiple job offers in the tech industry because of the algorithm you created for your senior project.
Tech careers were unpredictable and oftentimes fleeting. But you were confident that your innovative program would help kick-start your career and cement your position in the company that you chose for a long while.
That’s why you wanted to go out and travel. See nature! Just before you commit to a desk and computer for the rest of your foreseeable future.
“Do you know how big California is?” Bucky asked you agitated.
“Yes, I do,” you answered back with a cheeky grin.
“California has the greatest number of national parks!” he pointed at the map.
“Yes. Nine! And that doesn’t include the monuments and the trails and the memorials-”
“No!”
“Well, I’m not asking for your permission.”
“I still say, ‘no.’”
“I’ll go with or without you, Buck. I just thought you should know my plan.”
“Do you know how dangerous it is out there? Especially if you’re alone.”
“I can take care of myself. I did take that self-defense class for a couple of months,” you reasoned.
“Why can’t you go somewhere that has- Look, Nevada! Nevada has one national park. The Great Basin. And hey…we could even hit up Vegas while we’re there!” Bucky pointed at the map.
“Oh, ya cuz I would really be safe from creep-o’s in Vegas!” you rolled your eyes at your best friend.
“Ok. What about Hawaii? Hawaii has two national parks! And it’s HA-WA-II!”
“Do you know how much that plane ticket would cost? I haven’t started my job yet. Besides, who would watch Smokey while I was away?”
“You’re bringing the dog?!”
“Of course, I’m bringing the dog! Smokey goes where I go.” And as if he was called, your large greyhound came over licking your hand under the table. “We’re gonna have so much fun in our Bus-Bus, aren’t we, Smokey?!”
“And another thing?! How sure are you that the rusted piece of metal you call a car will actually take you around California? You’d probably break down before you get south of Oakland!”
“I had my mechanic look at it! Sid said it was in good shape! Plus I can call a tow if I need to.”
Bucky just looked at you defeated. He knew there was no convincing you out of this hair-brained plan of yours. You had always been a person to stick to your guns as soon as you planned it out. ‘No Regrets,’ you had always said.
No Regrets, Bucky repeated in his head trying to decide what to do. Nine parks! Nine! It would take you a month and a half to finish that round trip. And that’s only if you decided to stay at each park for a couple of nights, not the week you were planning.
“All right. All right. I’ll go with you.” Bucky relented, placing his head in his hands.
“I didn’t ask you to, Buck,” you chuckled, trying to hide the relief on your face.
“Bullshit! You knew I was going with you the moment you told me about it.” He called out your bluff. You shrieked and held your arms out to Bucky’s neck, embracing him in a tight hug.
“You and I are gonna have so much fun! You’re not gonna regret this.”
“Ya, ya, ya.” Bucky relished in your warm embrace. You smelled like sun-kissed fruit on a lazy afternoon. You felt like a cool breeze that just wafted into his life unexpectedly and decided to stay. Erupting his life into chaos.
You pulled away looking into his deep blue eyes. He narrowed them as if he saw something in you that he had never seen before.
“Ok, we leave right after graduation! And you can’t take it back now Barnes. You’re in this with me till the end!” You smiled at him. Your cheeks were puffy and red, carrying a dimple that he wanted to caress.
“Lord, help me.” He whispered under his breath.

OAKLAND, California — The organizers of California Forever, a tech billionaire-backed plan to build a new city outside San Francisco, pulled their initiative from the local Solano County ballot in a surprise move on Monday.
The plan is supported by Bay Area tech investors and venture capitalists, including the co-founders of LinkedIn and Netscape, seeking to transform the wheat fields 50 miles north of San Francisco into a futuristic city.
Organizers hoped to use the ballot measure process to win approval in Solano County more quickly, bypassing much of the red tape and planning requirements typically involved in such projects. The California Forever campaign said it will continue to work on the project and return to the ballot for zoning approval in 2026.
But the withdrawal nevertheless marks a setback for a campaign that has already spent over $2 million to bypass the typical county planning process and rezone nearly 20,000 acres of wheat fields for urban development. It also shows how even campaigns with major resources can run aground in the face of local resistance, with farmers, small-town mayors and recent college graduates banding together in recent months to lobby against it.
Jan Sramek, the CEO and founder of California Forever, said pulling the ballot measure would not impact their “ambitious timeline” to build the new city. He said in a statement they were simply reordering the steps needed to complete the project to allow for more community input, while also arguing California no longer offers the same “opportunity and optimism” that it used to.
His group will now try to push the plans forward through the normal county planning process, which includes negotiating environmental impact reports and development agreements. Solano County Supervisor Mitch Mashburn said California Forever has agreed to reimburse the county for these costs.
“Delaying the vote gives everyone a chance to pause and work together,” Mashburn said in a statement. “With the ballot measure off the table, it will be far easier.”
California politicians skeptical of the project quickly applauded the move and said the county process would allow it to be properly scrutinized. Democratic Rep. John Garamendi, whose district contains Solano County, called the original plan a “pipedream” and said in a statement California Forever’s decision would ensure the community was “sustainable, transparent, and beneficial for all residents.”
State Assemblymember Lori Wilson, also a Democrat representing the area, said the plan for a new city could offer benefits to the county, but only after careful consideration.
“The initiative being pulled is the best outcome for Solano County,” Wilson said. “Now we can properly vet the full impact of the development without lingering ballot deadlines.”
California Forever organizers had tried to soften their approach to the project over the past year, including by rebranding it as the East Solano Plan, amid local resistance and skepticism. They shifted from suing farmers who refused to sell their land for the project to promising to build a state-of-the-art sports complex and new urgent care facilities in the county, among other sweeteners.
That approach seemed to be showing early returns after their plan won the support of the Bay Area Council, a business-backed public policy and advocacy organization, last week.
But local opposition groups argued Monday’s decision showed the project still had an uphill battle to win broader support.
“You can paint it a lot of different ways, as they obviously have, but they pulled their initiative because they knew they weren’t going to win,” said Sadie Wilson, whose regional Greenbelt Alliance nonprofit had led the main opposition group to the plan. “This is a major victory.”

Unlike other Arab countries that signed "normalization" agreements and even cooperated with the Israeli genocide in Gaza, the brave people of Yemen didn't betray its Palestinian brothers and sisters, and for this reason it's now the target of attacks by the US and UK.
The US & UK have started bombing Yemen - as the Israel/US war on Gaza expands to a wider regional war.
Gaza, Yemen… what’s next? Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Iran?
Dear Americans, do you realize you’re ruled by warmongering psychopaths?
Have your leaders ever helped any two parties achieve peace?
Can you go for just one fukkking year without a war? Just one!
Are you so brainwashed that in every fukkking war, America is the good guy and it really had to get involved?
Oh, Houthis are evil, Hamas are evil, Saddam is evil, oh Assad is evil, Gaddafi is evil, Russia is evil, China is evil, Iran is evil, Cuba is evil, Venezuela is evil, North Korea is evil… list goes on. You think you’re Superman saving the world?
Jesus Christ!
You have thousand problems. Fix your country, which is acting like the Roman Empire in its final stage.
This is Oakland, California. It’s close to San Francisco, the high-tech city.

Where Have You Seen Loki Season 2's X-5 Actor Before?
This post contains spoilers for the season premiere of "Loki."
"Loki" is back this week, and along with the return of Norse trickster god Loki (Tom Hiddleston), agent Mobius (Owen Wilson), and the rest of the Time Variance Authority, the show's premiere also sees the introduction of a few new key characters. Among them? Ke Huy Quan's helpful, tech-savvy Ouroboros (or O.B.) and X-5, a mysterious new TVA agent played by Rafael Casal. And it's the latter who is particularly intriguing.
So far, we haven't seen X-5 do much besides question whether jet skis are part of the sacred timeline, but the character already seems to be an agitating force within the organization. He's also quite possibly poised to become a recognizable Marvel villain. After all, a featurette for the second season had a couple bits of footage from behind the scenes that showed him in a TVA jumpsuit, as if he was being held prisoner. So that should be interesting to watch play out. But there's more.
As /Film's Sandy Schaefer pointed out back in July, the trailer for "Loki" includes a poster for a movie called "Zaniac!" which fans have tied to Casal's character via leaks and speculation. Zaniac is a noteworthy character in Marvel Comics, though he bears little resemblance to X-5. The character was an evil entity that possessed the man who would become Jack the Ripper, and later took over slasher actor Brad Wolfe.
Ahead of the show's premiere, Casal has been credited by several outlets as Brad Wolfe, not X-5, so it seems likely that he could play out some form of the Zaniac plot this season. Regardless of Casal's true role in the show, though, he's an excellent multi-hyphenate artist whose past works deserve attention.
If X-5 looks familiar, it's likely you recognize Casal from "Blindspotting," a fantastic 2018 musical comedy-drama that he co-wrote with longtime creative partner Daveed Diggs (yes, of "Hamilton" fame). "Blindspotting" was a labor of love for Casal and Diggs, who also produced the film about two best friends living in Oakland, California whose lives are disrupted by the broken policing system. As serious as that sounds, "Blindspotting" is also laugh-out-loud funny, and Casal is a totally charming standout as hot-headed Miles.
The performer reprised the role for Starz's "Blindspotting" TV show, which ran for two seasons and was recently canceled. A criminally underseen hidden gem of a series, "Blindspotting" takes place after the film and puts the focus on Miles' girlfriend, Ashley Rose (Jasmine Cephas Jones), as she parents the pair's young mixed-race son in a racist world, all while Miles is behind bars. Despite his character's incarceration, Casal still appears in the show frequently and his hilarious, soulful character is a fan favorite. If you're looking for a thoughtful, entertaining, dynamic watch – or just want to see what Casal's made of – you can't do much better than either iteration of "Blindspotting."
The performer has also made a name for himself in other projects, including several collaborations with Diggs. A poet and rapper in addition to his acting creds, Casal appeared on three seasons of "Def Poetry Jam" on HBO, released a mixtape with Diggs in 2010, and contributed to the soundtracks for "Blindspotting," including in the catchy (and foulmouthed, fair warning) song "Easy Come, Easy Go." He reunited with Diggs in the acclaimed 2020 miniseries "The Good Lord Bird," a wild historical fiction series led by a fiery Ethan Hawke. Casal and Diggs even started a public theater project called Bars Medley, which remixed classic literature into musical performances.
Other on-screen works of Casal's include a supporting role in the 2019 Hugh Jackman flick "Bad Education" (he played the love interest of Jackman's closeted character) and a multi-episode turn in the "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" revival. Casal played a ringmaster named Mr. Tophat in the reboot of the classic, kid-friendly horror series. Next up, Casal is appearing in "Wildcat," a biography of Southern Gothic author Flannery O'Connor that's directed and co-written by Hawke. The X-5 actor plays a character in one of O'Connor's short stories in the movie, which premiered at Telluride but hasn't been released to the public yet.
Whether X-5 is a frustrated TVA employee, a secret evil entity, a movie actor, or something else entirely, it's exciting to see an artist as talented and versatile as Casal take the stage in a major Marvel series. You can catch his next moves on Disney+, where new episodes of "Loki" stream Thursdays at 9pm ET.

watched the oakland city council meeting on public safety yesteday was interesting and also somewhat disheartening in regards to the AI detecting tech "Shotspotter" that they were voting on approval for extension. the company that deploys it had a team of lobbyists just giving their time to some corpo that specifically stated how much of a sham that program is but that they think its in the city's best interest to continue funding it, something like 1.2 million? residents of deep east oakland also more or less trusted in the technology with some others stating that it was a completely bunk technology since of the thousands of "gunshots" this year led police to complete bullshit reports (cause the tech doesn't account for fireworks, car backfire, or even construction jackhammers). lots of racial divisiveness too such as comments like "look who's against said technology and look who's for this technology" when the base of this whole situation is to the proliferation of firearms in this country. the fucking police captain lying through his teeth and misleading the public to funnel more funds to this was pretty atrocious...
idk as i've become more involved in civic engagement its really just interesting to see how these subjects are played and lobbied based on lies and misinformation since like more than half of the city budget goes to police and "emergency services" which of course works as an anchor for all other facets of budget to work in reliance on the sole intention to police. this face of fascism is just like pitting poors against each other while corporations profit off of these main concerns its just insane and diabolical.
