I think I spend a large majority of time updating family portraits lol. Something about seeing a family grow and their lineage expand is so fun to me!

Life on the Road after One Year
February 2, 2018 marked our one year anniversary on the road; traveling from Salem, Oregon to spots unknown within the United States. With nothing more than my tax refund to live on and our newly acquired pop up camper - we knew nothing about the Rving lifestyle and at times I felt like Robin Williams in that RV movie.
I had learned about the term workamping by doing some online research and found that we could trade work hours for a free place to stay – sometimes also with $$ pay. This paved the way for us working at an RV park in Vidalia, Louisiana for 6 months, play with some muddy sugar beets in Crookston, Minnesota, and then on to some grueling walking hours at Amazon in Campbellsville, Kentucky.
However, it has not been without its hardships – like the Jeep breaking down not once, not twice, but three times! Once in Missouri, once in Tennessee (thank you Mom for saving us – I really don’t know what I would do without you) and again in Kentucky! Thank you to my new Amazon friends the Zanders and Saldivars for helping me get to work! Not to mention our trusty pop up no longer was suitable for living and we were forced to find another camper. Luckily I spotted a 1971 Coachmen for sale on Craigslist for $500 – which I absolutely love renovating (more on that project in another post)!
Despite some of the hardships - I wouldn’t have changed a thing – we got a chance to sightsee around parts of the country I have never seen, meet new friends, and still make ends meet! Plus my cat, Salem, has adjusted well to the new lifestyle and we can’t wait to see what 2018 brings! Below are some photos from the past year:

My last sunrise. That morning I was not yet a vampire, and I saw my last sunrise. I remember it completely, yet I don't remember any sunrise before it. I watched the whole magnificence of the dawn for the last time, as if it were the first. And then I said goodbye to sunlight and went out to become what I became. #interviewwiththevampire #louisiana #oakalleyplantation (at Oak Alley Plantation) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7eyX5bB062/?igshid=uiifgkd5204o

New Orleans - Post #2 The State of Louisiana has tons of plantations and my trip would no be complete if I do not visit one of them. The Great Mississippi River Road is about 70 miles in length, located on each side of the river between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and boasting some of Louisiana's most notable plantations. Many early Louisiana plantations grew rice, indigo, or tobacco, but by the mid-nineteenth century the majority were growing sugar cane, which became the most profitable cash crop in the state. Louisiana would become the most wealthy state in the country by the onset of the Civil War, made possible only by the forced hard labor of thousands of slaves who worked at these plantations. I visited Louisiana's Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie. Three-hundred-year-old live oak trees form a canopy over an avenue leading to the pillared front porch. The plantation is known as the "Grand Dame of the Great River Road." These breathtaking trees have a lifespan of up to 600 years. The home was built in 1836 by the enslaved with handmade bricks made from the Mississippi River Mud 16 inches thick. There are 28 columns that surround the house, all made from specially designed bricks. The plantation owner, Jacques and Celina Roman, wanted an antebellum mansion and they got it. The “big house” was very nice indeed. However, the kind of life that the 220 slaves who lived there had was very sad. Thankfully, on 1864 slavery was abolished in Louisiana. On my next trip I will visit Whitney and Laura plantation. #ilovehistory #travel #travelphotography #travelling #smile #travelblogger #travelgirl #travelguide #oakalleyplantation #lousiana #live (at Oak Alley Plantation Restaurant & Inn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcsgZsYrT4v/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A few Junes ago, I went to NOLA for the 1st time with a bunch of friends & we booked a tour of Oak Alley Plantation. This is a view of its namesake oak alley from the balcony of the Big House. When we were there, I kept thinking that all this was made on the backs of enslaved people, and I admit it was a reason I hesitated to do any plantation tours. But I think our unwillingness to really look at & grapple with the sins of our national past has contributed to the continued racial strife we see today. Slavery may seem like a distant past for some of us, but its effects are still keenly felt today, especially by Black people. We can’t do better if we can’t face what we’ve done, and to that, I like that Oak Alley has a dedicated exhibit to the enslaved on site (you actually have to go by the slave quarters to get to the main house) and online and that slavery & the lives of the enslaved are included in the main house presentation. This part of their history is not hidden. . . Anyway, this #tbt brought to you by my thoughts on current events & how I can be more mindful when I’m geeking out about history & the fact that I miss traveling & seeing my friends- all privileges, I know.
