A few Junes ago, I went to NOLA for the 1st time with a bunch of friends & we booked a tour of Oak Alley Plantation. This is a view of its namesake oak alley from the balcony of the Big House. When we were there, I kept thinking that all this was made on the backs of enslaved people, and I admit it was a reason I hesitated to do any plantation tours. But I think our unwillingness to really look at & grapple with the sins of our national past has contributed to the continued racial strife we see today. Slavery may seem like a distant past for some of us, but its effects are still keenly felt today, especially by Black people. We can’t do better if we can’t face what we’ve done, and to that, I like that Oak Alley has a dedicated exhibit to the enslaved on site (you actually have to go by the slave quarters to get to the main house) and online and that slavery & the lives of the enslaved are included in the main house presentation. This part of their history is not hidden. . .
