The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 118: Green Legend Ran with MDi
The Saturday Anime series is back! These are episodes where we talk about anime that aired on the Saturday Anime block of Sci-Fi Channel back in the 90s on US Cable TV. This month, MDi is back to talk with me about a title that was once one of Pioneer Anime’s original flagship titles in the US, but has since kind of become forgotten---Green Legend Ran! Listen as we revisit this title to see if this environmental sci-fi fantasy OAV-edited-to-movie-for-Sci-Fi-Channel’s-broadcast still holds up, having to deal with the infamous WordFit System, and how this title is connected to....Snakes on a Plane??? You’ll have to listen to find out how!

so, there's a series called "Stop!! Hibari-Kun!" that was first published in 1981 and holds up as _shockingly_ good trans representation to this day.
There's an article talking about it here:
"The most refreshing thing about the series is that, while there are some problematic elements to how Hibari’s character is portrayed, the punchline tends to be other characters’ extreme reactions to Hibari’s biology and the ways in which she is able to keep her secret. Hibari herself is never the target of the jokes.
There is no more tragic backstory for her than there is for Kōsaku (both of their mothers have passed away), Hibari passes as female extremely successfully and is all around a bit of a golden girl. Athletic and smart, she’s beloved by everyone. While one of her older sisters, Tsubame, isn’t pleased with Hibari presenting as female, her younger sister accepts her and her other older sister is supportively indifferent."
It's a story about a trans girl in Japan in 1981, so there's a lot of language that isn't okay in today's world, and Hibari's gender is treated as this big scandalous thing - but the fact that the writer himself never devalues her experience or the authenticity of her identity is what makes it work.
It's not for everyone, but it'd be worth reading a few issues and see if it's up your alley :)
Really it’s interesting how there are very strong transmasculine mangas like Boys Run the Riot and Stripping the Flesh but I couldn’t actually name anything as easy to recommend for transfems. There’s lots of genderswap and crossdressing mangas with transfeminine themes, but nothing is ever as clear cut, because both genres are oversaturated with fetishy content that just exists for people who get off to transfemininity. Any genuine transfem mangas are drowned in a sea of softcore hentai to the point that finding anything that seriously engages with the lives of transgender people is like digging for gold in a giant pile of shit that makes you wonder whether humanity even deserves to exist.

Takashi Iizuka on Interview, Sonic Mania Offer and Sonic in PSO2
Image: Otaquest
60 years and SEGA just keeps on giving. It makes very much sense since we’re just 13 days away from our beloved blue hedgehog’s birthday. They’re really not kidding when they say “Sonic’s just getting started”.
Takashi Iizuka on Otaquest Interview
Earlier today, SEGA_OFFICIAL Twitter posted an interview of the Head of Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka with Otaquest. Interestingly, Otaquest is a website established by Taku Takahashi, who is the record producer of M-Flo. Yes, the same M-Flo that collaborated with SEGA to promote Shadow the Hedgehog game back in 2005. Here’s their MV with a brief but wonderful shot of Shadow dancing.
The interview talks about how game development and production for Sonic over the years, Chao Garden from Sonic Adventure games, NiGHTS into Dreams and how he hopes the 30th Anniversary game can “meet the fans’ desires”. Sonic’s 30th Anniversary is next year.
When Iizuka was asked about the fact that there are 2D and 3D gameplay that the Sonic Team must balance with, IIzuka answered that when brought together in Sonic Generations, there is a strong demand for a 2D standalone title which later becomes Sonic Mania. He also added that they “would like to take good care of these two very popular iterations of Sonic’s in the future.” Later they talked about Chao Garden and IIzuka acknowledges that “the game is still loved by many people even after 20 years, and I’m thrilled that there are still requests for a sequel.”
You can read the full article here
Sonic Mania Offer
Screenshot: Microsoft
From today until June 15, 2020, Microsoft is offering a free digital copy of Sonic Mania for any featured sale title in their Gamer Flicks Sale. Make sure you read the T&C before purchasing. The free Sonic Mania comes in digital Xbox copy, while supplies last too. Unfortunately, it’s only available in United States and Puerto Rico. Here’s the catch, the new Sonic movie is one of the featured sale title there. Two birds in one stone!
See the offer here
Sonic in PSO2
Aside from the Otaquest interview, SEGA_OFFICIAL Twitter also tweeted about PSO2. For a limited time, a magnificent Sonic statue will be in center PSO2 Lobby There are Amy, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman statues as well. Collecting all the coins will cause the Sonic statue to change.Â

While not mentioned in the tweet, the PSO2 website shows that a new enemy will appear during the event. The enemy is described as “quick and light” and may also drop a rare item when defeated.
Image:Â pso2.jp
And that’s a wrap! With all of this happening in a day, we can’t help but just be hyped on what would SEGA announce during the New Games+ Expo on 23rd June, which is coincidence-I-think-not Sonic’s Birthday! One thing for sure is that surely there’s more to come.

RE: Interview on Otaquest
[Source]
1) Miura admits being emotionally invested in and moved by his own work - d’awww! Someone give this man a hug please
2) + 3) LOL that’s essentially what I have been saying:
2)
To fully revive, she has to analyse and understand what happened”
[tumblr post]
3)
"While a happy ending for Guts and Casca is possible, it’s unlikely such an ending would occur [...] Miura agrees. This is a story about human beings so it’ll probably end up that way.”
[wordpress]
I’m not sure how accurate this translation of theirs is but I’m mostly intrigued by Miura stating that a story about human beings will also end up as one being about human beings. Sounds a lot like he is going to root for a bittersweet ending here - I still think he may pick a more good than bitter ending, depending on how much shit his characters go through.
What I also find interesting is that Miura appears to focus on Casca and Griffith A LOT. “She has to face up what Griffith and the demons did”. This sounds a bit like Casca is going to obsessed with Griffith (or perhaps even just finding out the truth), in a similar fashion like Guts was obsessed with killing apostles back in the Black Swordsman/Lost Children days
What he is also stating that he is trying to think properly about what humans would do in this situation. In other words he’s still exploring possible scenarios based on the character’s thoughts and feelings. Funny that, because that’s also something I do with my prediction posts. Starting to get the impression that some predictions I’ve written may be something Miura must have already thought about...

i'm thinking of going to OTAQUEST, but i'm not really sure what to expect from a live nakata set in 2019. what are the chances of him playing stuff from like capsule's 2005-2008 eras?
If you’re talking about his solo DJ set, AFAIK he doesn’t play any capsule older than 2007 in those. You’re going to get the most recent Perfume songs and maybe Laser Beam/Chocolate Disco/Flash, some Kyary things (Ninjari Bang Bang probably), and cuts from his solo album interspersed with other misc electro-house. Of course this is from my memory of watching videos of his sets and reading setlists from years back, what he plays these days may have changed but he has a pattern with his own material.
For capsule’s set, they tend to “perform” the same handful of songs...you’ll probably hear Sugarless GiRL, Starry Sky, FLASH BACK, JUMPER, more more more, Stay with You, Love or Lies, Motor Force, etc etc. So again, basically only cuts from albums from 2007-onwards and not always songs with Toshiko’s vocals in them (which is kind of a waste, but half of her job is just standing at the booth and being a hype woman I guess). The oldest track they still do is Glider, which only started popping up in sets circa 2014.

Reading this is quite eye-opening to say the least. It honestly makes me reconsider what I once thought of Kyoda and gives me a lot of dread for Hi-Evo 3.
I’ll be honest: Kyoda comes off in this interview as pretentious, bitter, and cynical. I get that he’s 15 years older now, but holy fuck, he’s such an asshole in this interview. It makes me second-guess my respect for him. To think I had him sign my DVD at Otakon, too.
