Dear Void,
Been having a lousy fucking day... which I'm going to tell you all about. Because let's be real here there really isn't anything else to listen and you're always here. Pleasant silence void, so here it goes.
I'm so fucking tried of fighting with seemingly everything just to deal and gwt shit taken care of! People, technology, the fucking internet, apps, more fucking people!!! It's never fucking ending! God forbid if I'm not some superhuman being that doesn't know how to slove the fucking issue or even worse because it's crime against humanity if I ask a question or need help. The world may fucking end, because I guess I'm the A bomb, short for asshole!! I just want to tell every fucking one of them guess what mf I wish I could do everything by myself! I wish I never needed help from anyone ever! Do you think I even a millisecond want to beg, gravel and look pathetic in front of anyone, especially some of them. No the fuck I don't!!
I'm seriously at the point where I'm like what can I do illegally that will make me enough money to live off of, but has the lowest prison times?! Because that's how fucking far this shit world, dealing with a shity person far to offer gets me!
It's like fuck all anyone cares anymore. Because I've had to cry help too many fucking times with no end in sight. I'm pretty sure there's quite a few people that are about to buy some kerosene and proceed to light fire to their side of the bridge that's their friendship to me. Not that I can blame truthfully. When I've become that person in there life. That only seems to connect them when I need help.
But what the fuck everyone doesn't get the fun of experiencing is watching me flounder around like goddamn fish! As I going in every fucking direction at same fucking time trying to figure out a solution, a way out, any other way that doesn't involve me asking a mf person for help! There are times that I actually do figure it out. May it be good fortunate or some benevolent deity (because when i'm in jam I'm praying to all of them, if I believe or not) or some other factor.
But there's days like this Void. When my bank account gets hacked or whatever. All but .83 cents was taken, which feels like insult! It's like take all the money fuckers don't leave. 83 cents that I can do fuck all with what mf assholes!! 🤬 So had to fight I mean call my bank so they cancel my debit card, do claim for non-authorized charges and do rest of it. Then I had horrible experience of calling the person I want speak to least in my life, explaining to them what happened with my bank to see if said person could, would, without making me feel like the stupidest person on the planet for somehow allowing my bank account to get hacked... help me give enough funds to cover the amount I need to my groceries delivered. Which of course once my bank puts the money back in my account I can give this person... but ohh that doesn't matter oh no... I'm still the idiot that somehow let thieves steal the money in the first place! 🙄 To just land a nuclear bomb on top this shit Sunday. They do help, sends money to PayPal, I go check my PayPal account... PayPal has taken more then half the money that was sent to me. I'm about ready to fucking scream, slam my head against the wall, just sit and cry for a few hours. I do none of these things because Void I just have me. Instead I fucking call PayPal, literally end up arguing with one their call center workers. Gets them to shut it. Because while they explaining some bullshit to me, I text the person that sent me the money ask if the could please send me a scene shot of the transaction from their PayPal. I ask the PayPal call center rep if I send it to them. Which they said yes, so atleast established the amount that was sent. So now PayPal has no idea why their computer system took it upon its self to take half the fucking money!! 😡 I have wait until Monday to speak to this other dept in PayPal that only open during the business week. Just fucking fabulous.
So the rest of my day has been spent having just little things popping off to. I've noticed when I've had a day of big things going to shit, little things that would mostly not be so made just seem far more frustrating then they should be!!
The truly sad thing Void is I just wanted to get my grocery delivery set up for tomorrow so I'd have food. Now I have no fucking idea when that might be...
#dear void#completely stressed#don't want to fight anymore#all such bullshit#just want to be independent again#hate asking for help

Be careful out there kiddos
So bit of a long story but I think its funny. There's a scam going around. Ive seen it once but its its highly likely there are more. Basically a person asks you if you would like a sugar momma. Mine offered 300-500$ a week. I was obviously suspicious. But im very broke and still out of a job so I figured what the hell, couldnt hurt to look into it.
I started by going to the person's tumblr. It seemed super legit, like they even had resonable responses to reblogs. So either its a well put together scam, or it just a lonley ass person. I used a fake number to text the number they provided.
They said their name was Hannah Lenmont age 49 from San Francisco. They were suposedly devorced with no kids, and an investment analyst who just wanted someone to spoil and talk to, nothing sexual. I was like yeah sure okay. I gave my age and state i lived in plus some hobbies, normal stuff it was whatever. I've told more to strangers on discord tbh.
We got to talking and she was super sweet, called me sweet nicknames, told me about how she was going to spoil me how she wanted to take me traveling, it all seemed like a lot of work for a scam, but of ccourse i was still suspicious of the whole thing.
Here's where it gets fun. They asked what the nearest convenience store was. Odd request but okay. They knew i didnt have a car so they asked me to walk there and buy a steam gift card. And they would give me more to cover the cost when they paid me tonight (They called it an investment card at first idk) i was like I have 3 dollars to my name. I thought this was done, they'd realize I'm broke as shit and be done. Nope! They assured me they would just give me the money I needed to buy it. They would transfer it to my account and it'd be there tomorrow morning. I was like cool I'll buy it tomorrow then right?
I was a tad confused at this point, like it was obviously a scam, but what could they obtain from a paypal or routing number. Then the kicker.
What does that even mean honestly, anyway this is how they wanted to "send" the money
Ah I see, of course. So i drew this out as long as possible saying i couldn't set up the app because my phone was shitty, and the online banking didnt work either. I again suggested PayPal but just for the first payment. But apparently thier acount manager restricted 3rd party apps because thier last sugar bady stole 890$ via pay pal. I still wanted to scam them a little so i suggested a visa gift card.
Now this wasnt the first time they'd mentioned Germany but i was far more suspicious now. I said i was willing to wait until they were back in the states to get them on a new topic so i could play my trap card. I asked if they wanted to see some art i made. I'm not sure if you know this but it's super easy get an ip adress and location of someone if you can get them to click a link. Does the link look sketchy as hell? Absolutely, but many people don't pay much attention to image links.
And then they clicked it. I was so damn excited man. Turns out Germany is in Lagos Nigeria, who knew?
TL:DR: My tumblr sugar momma was actually a Nigerian prince, and it is so easy to get someone's ip adress.

RECENT NEWS, RESOURCES & STUDIES, August 19, 2020
Welcome to my latest summary of recent ecommerce news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & Etsy! This covers articles, podcasts, videos and infographics I came across since the late July report, although some may be older than that.
Please note I am taking the next week off, starting tomorrow (Aug. 19), so I might be a little slow in replying to any comments.
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
USPS has become the focus of investigations due to reported mail slowdowns. Some small businesses who rely on USPS to deliver are suffering. “The longer the policy has been in effect, the worse the backlog gets.” As of today (August 18), the postmaster says they will rollback the changes until after the election in November. This is a rapidly-moving story in part due to the push for voting by mail, and should concern anyone who ships to US customers using regular mail (as opposed to couriers). Meanwhile, they plan to temporarily raise commercial rates during the holiday shopping season, but retail rates will not change.
Ecommerce sales are still up year over year. "Before Covid-19 hit the US in March, e-commerce made up roughly 12% of retail sales in the country. That figure grew as states issued shelter-in-place orders that shut stores and kept shoppers at home, creating tailwinds for a company like Amazon. But even as states have begun to reopen, e-commerce has remained elevated, according to Bank of America data."..."The Economist used Google search traffic for hints of how lifestyles are changing and found users are still searching terms related to cooking, crafts, and exercise above pre-pandemic rates. There has been a noticeable spike in interest around such products as gardening supplies, baking flour, and Crocs." The UK is still seeing a good increase despite the ease in reduction in lockdown restrictions. The growth is slowing a bit in the US, though.
Half of US small businesses fail in the first year (and other stats on small business).
It’s been second quarter report season, covering company performance from April to June 2020. Here are results for major companies involved in ecommerce in some way (comparisons are year-over-year):
Amazon US: sales up 40%
eBay: sales up 26%
Etsy: sales up $146% [click the link to read my summary]
Facebook: revenue up 11%
Google: revenue down 2%
PayPal: revenue up 22%
Pinterest: revenue up 4%; active users up 39%
Shopify: revenue up 97%
Walmart [2nd quarter ran May to July]: ecommerce sales up 97%, same-store sales up 9.3%
ETSY NEWS
Admin are now posting a monthly update thread, in case you fear you have missed anything. This is how they chose to announce that non-seller accounts can no longer post in the forum. Since those account owners can still read the forum, that doesn’t mean you can call out your customers now.
Sadly, there wasn’t much media coverage of Etsy’s nearly-annual billing screw up, but this one did get some attention.
Etsy continues to get good media coverage for masks, including masks for your dolls. They also apparently got a decent slice of Google ranking for various pandemic-related searches in May [scroll down to the “Protection and Prevention” section].
However, Etsy is getting some bad press (along with Amazon), for allowing QAnon merchandise, because “the FBI has warned of the movement's potential to incite domestic terrorism.” Etsy replied to a request for comment saying that “that product listings associated with certain movements are allowed as long as they don't violate the company's seller or prohibited items policies, which ban items that promote hate or that could incite violence. The company said it is continually reviewing items on the site and could remove items in the future if they're found to violate Etsy's policies.”
More search trends on Etsy, this time kids’ items. I love how they think tie-dye was a ‘90s thing and not a ‘60-70s thing LOL. “a 318% increase in searches for kids tie-dye items...71% increase in searches for dinosaur wall art or decor*, and a 37% increase in searches for school of fish items….we’ve seen kid-friendly crafts spike in popularity, with searches for DIY kits for kids up 336%.”
Also, the holiday trends guide is out. “With the holidays approaching, and most shopping happening online, more shoppers will be looking for your help to make the season feel special.” The report is lengthy, covering Halloween to New Year’s, and most listing categories, while pointing out the possible pandemic changes to the usual trends. There is also an accompanying podcast with transcript.
Speaking of the holiday season, here are Etsy’s tips for shops. Note that it is a bit late, as businesses need to have their holiday items posted no later than July if they want to be eligible for most fall media coverage. Almost every point refers to an Etsy tool or feature, some of them costing you money, so use this as a very broad guideline & be careful to read between the lines.
They are still rolling out Etsy Payments to more countries: Morocco & Israel are the most recent. Note that Etsy Payments is not yet compulsory in these new countries.
Etsy Ads once again has graphs. Do you find them useful? (I haven’t run ads at all this year, so I can’t check.)
Sendle is the latest shipping company to have a label integration with Etsy shops.
Etsy asked US sellers to lobby their reps for more support for small business and other initiatives in the pandemic aid package.
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
Google has stated that content on tabs is indexed and contributes to ranking as if it were on the page instead, but yet another test demonstrates that tabs may limit you.
Due to the pandemic, Google has delayed finalizing mobile-first indexing until March 2021. (They originally announced it would be finished this September.) That means you have more time to update your website’s mobile version, ideally with responsive design.
Site speed does matter to SEO, and Google is now asking some searchers how fast certain sites loaded for them.
User comments on your products, blog posts and website can help you improve your SEO. The article suggests ways of getting that feedback, and ways to use it. [I’ve even had buyers give me new keywords to describe my items, in their messages and reviews.]
Getting links back to your site is important to SEO, but don’t annoy people while doing it. [sort of humour & sort of a rant, but does give some useful background on why backlinks matter.] Internal links also matter.
There are some special tricks for food/recipe SEO, including structured data and even a WordPress plugin.
Another WordPress plugin: submit any new or updated pages to Bing to be automatically re/indexed.
Do your keyword research before setting up your website’s sections and sub-sections, as they should serve the buyer experience, not your perception of it. Same with choosing which pages link to each other.
SEOs are still trying to work out what happened with recent Google algorithm changes. Search Engine Journal claims that the May update was at least in part about demoting sites that had out-of-date or inaccurate information, so they suggest getting rid of the bad content on your site, or at least updating it. “Content pruning” has some advocates, but I wouldn’t worry about investing tons of time in this unless you have tons of time to spend. Just get rid of the blog posts that were wildly wrong, and the out-of-date filler. If you have a lot of sold out products, redirect those to relevant active pages.
Meanwhile, a “glitch” on August 10 led people to think there was a massive Google algorithm update happening, but it all got fixed in less than a day.
If you are behind on Google search news, here is a 7 minute video [with time stamped subtopics & resources links listed below], direct from Google.
(CONTENT) MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA (includes blogging & emails)
It’s tough to get started in social media if you don’t know the terminology, so here’s a list of the basic definitions you can consult if you get lost when reading.
Don’t know how to blog? There are formulas you can use; here are eight options, nicely laid out, with downloadable templates. Don’t forget to figure out what your audience wants to read. And make sure you avoid these common blogging mistakes.
If you have an email list but do not know how to take advantage of all the bells & whistles the companies (MailChimp, Constant Contact etc.) offer you, here are 4 ways to segment your lists. You can then send different offers or newsletters to different segments.
You can optimize your social posts for people with visual impairments; excellent tips here.
By the time you read this, the TikTok mess will likely have changed again, but here is an article on Trump’s order to prohibit US companies from doing business with TikTok owner ByteDance if the platform is not sold by September 15.
Instagram has released its TikTok challenger, Reels, in more countries.
Instagram is now offering a fundraising option, although it is a slow launch with some beta testing in the US, UK & Ireland to start.
Here are step-by-step instructions on setting up your “Shop on Instagram.”
Pinterest says that searches around self-care & wellness have spiked during the pandemic lockdowns. “Pinterest has recently seen the highest searches ever around mental wellness ideas including meditation (+44%), gratitude (+60%) and positivity (+42%) that jumped from February to May….Pinterest says that searches for ‘starting a new business’ are up 35% on average, as are searches for ‘future life goals’ (2x), ‘life bucket list’ (+65%), ‘family goals future’ (+30%) and ‘future house goals’ (+78%).” There were also some searches clearly about spending more time at home: “Productive morning routine (up 6x), Exercise routine at home (up 12x), Self care night routine (up 7x)”
LinkedIn has a new algorithm; here’s how to make it work for you. [Many of these tips also apply to social media in general.]
Spotify is now doing “video podcasts”. Apparently a lot of their podcasters already did a video version of the Spotify podcasts, but had to publish it elsewhere up until now.
Twitter now admits it is considering offering subscriptions to shore up its revenue numbers. “Shares of Twitter rose 4% in early trading Thursday following the earnings results....Twitter's growth plans are under close scrutiny as many advertisers pull back due to the pandemic. On Thursday, Twitter reported second-quarter ad revenues of $562 million, a 23% decrease compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company has also been hit by advertisers participating in an ad boycott of social media, linked to the nationwide racial justice protests.” Also, the recent hack is not helping them.
That said, it is still possible to market using Twitter, and here are some of the basics.
YouTube is no longer sending email updates when a channel you follow posts new content.
ONLINE ADVERTISING (SEARCH ENGINES, SOCIAL MEDIA, & OTHERS)
Ad spend has increased again as lockdowns end, in some cases beating last year by a decent margin.
The Buy on Google program is ending its commission fees. Participants will also be able to integrate their PayPal and/or Shopify payment options. As often is the case, they are starting with the US first, but plan on rolling it out to more countries in the future. There are more details here, and a review here (with some of the drawbacks).
Google Product Ads are now showing the item’s “material” on the listing card (before you click). If you are doing your own feed for your website, you may have the ability to add the attributes needed for the details to show up.
If you find Google Ads too expensive, consider buying search ads on Bing.
eBay is experimenting with showing ads mixed in with unpaid listings; placement would depend on the same algorithm.
Here’s a new guide to Facebook Ads [videos & text]
STATS, DATA, OTHER TRACKING
Bing has launched a new version of Webmaster Tools.
There are ways to reduce the amount of traffic that Google Analytics designates as “direct traffic”; here are 15 of them.
Currently in closed beta testing, the Google Search Console now has an “Insights” function, just like Google Analytics. I’ve found the GA one useful for telling me things I don’t always look at, so crossing my fingers that they release this to everyone soon.
ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS
Shopify helped many businesses stay open during pandemic lockdowns, giving it the boost to start competing with the likes of Amazon in ecommerce. “Shopify merchants that had previously or entirely relied on brick-and-mortar sales would later report they were able revive nearly 95% of that revenue online.”
eBay started rolling out its Managed Payments system to more sellers worldwide on July 20th. Things seem to be going slowly, with some confusion.
But eBay is also having a 25th anniversary party for sellers on September 25th; don’t forget to register.
Walmart is still delaying its new subscription model to challenge Amazon Prime, Walmart+.
Amazon in the UK has launched a “Face mask store” part of the website. I haven’t seen this on other versions of Amazon. They’ve also increased some fees for some UK sellers, based on the new UK digital tax. And they are launching a site & presence in Sweden.
The Competition Bureau of Canada has launched an investigation of Amazon’s treatment of third-party sellers. “The bureau is asking any person or business that has conducted sales via Amazon.ca to contact them if they have any insights into the issues it is investigating.“
Amazon Prime Day has been postponed to later dates this year, starting with India on August 6-7. The remaining countries will apparently be announced soon.
If you use WooCommerce, here are a bunch of free plugins, with brief descriptions.
BUSINESS & CONSUMER STUDIES, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
Buyers do not all make purchase decisions the same way; Google uses its massive collection of data and some new studies to provide some examples. “Worldwide, search interest for “best” has far outpaced search interest for “cheap.”
It’s cheaper to keep repeat buyers than it is to find new ones; here are 16 ways to do that. One of my favourites is ““proactively providing information on how to avoid problems or get more out of your product” creates a 32% average lift to repurchase or recommend.”
It seems that researchers can never produce enough marketing guides on Gen Z and millennials.
MISCELLANEOUS (including humour)
I see a lot of new sellers, and some older sellers, confused about the idea of a business plan. HubSpot not only explains them, but also provides a downloadable template.
If you are thinking of changing careers, or just want to add skills to better run your current business, Google has many different courses, some of which they offer for free.
There are ways you can increase your productivity without (usually) working more hours. “A study published by John Pencavel of Standford University found that how much employees get done takes a sharp drop after 50 hours of work in a week, and even more drastically after 55 hours. The study found that employees working 70 hours per week actually produce nothing more in those extra 15 hours...taking a power nap in the middle of the day can help you process new information and even learn new skills.”

15) Rent Out Your Car
If becoming a driver is not an option but you have a vehicle, then you can try renting it out. This can be done on weekends or holidays or anytime that you will not be using the car. This might be a bit of a sacrifice on your end, however, most times making extra income requires a small price to pay.
If you have plans, for instance, a trip out of town and do not involve the use of your car, then think about renting it out and earn extra. You can try Getaround, an app that connects people with you and everything from scheduling, booking and exchanging of keys is done through the app.

Guide: Shopping on Taobao with Yoybuy
note: the pictures here will be uncaptioned. i’m sorry about this, but it’s going to get pretty visually heavy!
shopping on taobao is a pretty essential life skill for any lolita or lolita-to-be - and quite frankly it’s also just fun. what can i say, my forefathers stalked the savannah, working on bringing down that wildebeest, and in the same spirit, i stalk one yuan sales. they still sing tales around the campfire about how i got all of those fuzzy socks.
taobao is a marketplace of many different stores. think of it kind of like the ebay marketplace. it is located in china, and stores there largely ship only to other chinese addresses, so you need to use a buying service if you’re not in china yourself. for this guide, we’re going with yoybuy, because i’ve had good success with it and find it easiest to DIY.
first step is to open a browser to do your online shopping. i really like chrome for this because you can set it to automatically use google translate on a page. however, you’re going to want two tabs open before you even get to taobao...
in one tab, google for ‘google translate english to chinese’. google will automatically pop up the english to chinese boxes. we want simplified chinese here (which is usually the default).
also google ‘yuan to usd’ (or insert whatever your local currency is for usd). this will mean you can convert prices easily and readily, with that tab already at the ready.
one more tool and we’ll be ready to actually go to taobao!
when you right-click a webpage in chrome, this is the menu that pops up. we want to pay attention to translate to english here.
most of the time chrome will automatically translate. however, it may need a little push here and then.
with all of these tools ready, we’re finally ready to actually open taobao.com in a new tab.
this is... pretty overwhelming, right? google translate can automatically translate text, not anything in a picture, so it still ends up half-translated. phew. get your bearings a moment, though, and soldier on!
tonight i’ve decided that i could really use some cute hankies to go with a strawberry-themed outfit i’m planning. so, tab over to our english to simplified chinese...
now copy those chinese characters into the search bar on taobao...
it will give you some further suggestions - but let’s keep it pretty general for now. hit ‘submit’, and let’s see what we have.
looks like we’ve lucked out - there are tons of choices!
to get you acquainted with this page, the column on the right is where recommended advertised items show up. these can largely be disregarded. the main block of items will be underneath all of these options at the top.
as you can see we have a lot of different choices we could look into, if we wanted to narrow it down. however, this grey bar is where we have the important stuff.
we can hit the price button to sort things. scroll over it, and we’ll get more options.
since all i got is like three fiddy and some pocket lint - plus i’d rather have a cheaper cotton hankie that i won’t feel guilty about perhaps blowing my nose on - i usually sort price from low to high, so cheapest items are first.
that’s more like it! (7 yuan right now is about a dollar.) now we can browse for what catches our eye. you’ll also see, next to the price, how many people have bought it. under that is the translated name of the product, then the name of the storefront.
i like the looks of this one - properly frilly and fancy! right-click and open it in a new tab so we can keep organized. (that way there’s no getting frustrated if it’s a ‘bust’.)
now we’re on the product’s page in the seller’s store. we can look quickly off to the side for some information about the seller.
this guy’s apparently been selling on taobao for 6 years. the shop is rated out of 5 points in three areas - how accurate the description of their products is, how good their service is, and logistics (which probably covers things like how quickly they ship the products and how well they wrap them up, etc). this guy’s got a 4.8 rating that is rising.
that means we can probably buy from him with some confidence. if you see a store that hasn’t been open for very long, that would be a red flag. same if you have a store with low ratings, or absolutely perfect ratings. if it’s 5.0 across the board, it’s a little too good to be true sometimes! one red flag may not be worth it to stop you in your tracks, but be on the lookout for them, just like you would with any online seller.
and don’t worry about see all baby. google translate likes to think all items on taobao are babies... (it’s a mystery to all of us.)
wading past the translation, it looks like this shop sells a lot of linen goods, especially for the european market.
a really cute tea party vibe, right? :D
this is where we could browse this store more - it’s very cute, after all - but i’d like to maybe make the coordinate a little more specific and cohesive. let’s see if we have any better luck with a more specific search!
when you get more specific with your searches, it means there’s often a lot less items - for example, there’s only one page of search results instead of 15+. but i think we’ve found something that’s perfect!
cute, right? looking at it closer, though, it’s not embroidered, and it’s more of a terrycloth or towel texture. those are two things i’m not really sure about - this is why we open our finds in a new tab.
it does give me a chance to talk about this one thing, though -
sometimes the final price of an item will be hidden unless you’re a ‘VIP’. you can login and make a taobao account if you like - it requires a cell phone with texting, but international cell phones are okay. however, i usually just shrug and go “well, we know it’s somewhere under 9 yuan”.
whatever taobao agent you use will usually be able to get the VIP price for you.
another trick is that if you find an item that you go ‘oh, that’s close, but not quite....’ about, hover over its picture in the search results. you will then get two choices - find the same or find similar. the first option finds the exact same thing, but at other retailers. find similar, well, finds things that are variations on that same thing.
this hankie looks perfect! so... let’s actually buy it!
since taobao sellers largely only ship to people in china, and i’m in america, i can’t just hit that buy now button. this means i need to use an agent - and there are a lot of different choices out there.
i’ve used two so far, largely for ordering BJD stuff and home goods (and some accessories) (largely necklaces... what can i say... i read the words one yuan sale and my eyes light up). taobaospree is a professional outfit that you contact via email. they definitely give you the ‘white glove treatment’. their prices are very fair, and their staff very helpful. if you’re making really big important purchases, or purchases you’re worried about, i’d recommend them.
however, yoybuy is also really good for if you want to park the car yourself and walk instead of handing the keys to the valet, so to speak. i’ve also had really good experiences with them.
for taobaospree, they ask that you just email them a list of what you want with some details - they have a template you can use on their website. but since we’re just buying hankies, let’s use yoybuy.
first things first, we’ll need to sign in. yoybuy offers deals every so often like ten dollars of credit if you register with them, so it’s worth looking out for if you’re about to place an order. (every little bit helps, right?)
once you’ve signed in/signed up, take the url from the item you want...
and copy it into the search box at the top of yoybuy’s website, then click buy now.
yoybuy’s website will then load up all of the item’s information, like this.
now we can just shop as normal! it give you the converted rates of how much each item is, plus the domestic shipping, or how much the shipping will be from the seller to yoybuy. (yoybuy will help calculate the shipping from yoybuy to you later.)
so i’d like 6 total, and i can select the options. just to make things clear, i’ve also said as much in the ‘comments’ box. if something is a little unclear, you can add your comments there to make sure they get the right option.
as you can see this is totally meant for a much wider screen than mine, but it gives you an updating total of what is in your shopping cart.
on the black bar you also have some options like being able to ask for a live chat with someone if you get very confused.
when you’re ready, click ‘buy’. you’ll have a chance to do an overview of all your items before clicking the ‘pay’ button.
as you can see, there’s a couple of options here.
you can pay via a regular visa or mastercard, paypal, or use some other services i’m not familiar with. you can also send money via money transfer (like western union) and have it waiting there in your account.
there’s a service charge which is usually around 4% here. yoybuy themselves charge a fee of 10% for acting as your agent. they don’t ask for all of this up front. you pay in two parts - one is the items and domestic shipping that’s been calculated. they then bundle up all your items and figure out the best way to ship them to you, and you pay the 10% fee to them then.
if you’re initially doing a large order, your bank may balk a bit - so be prepared. for me, it took a text message of them going “uh hey, was this you? because random chinese company charging your credit card 200 dollars looks real sketchy.” and me going “lol it’s ok guys”.
however, in this case, handkerchiefs get!
you will now get an overview page of your order.
each item will have its own line, and you can track how things are going.
the agent will purchase the item for you, then await shipment of it. you can click the chat bubble at any time to chat with the agent to ask them about the state of the item. this is where they’ll also inform you if something is out of stock or if there are any difficulties. you can also ask for them to take a picture to show you, if you want to make sure something is ok before they send it on to you.
as your items come in, you can click the checkbox and get an estimated parcel weight. that will help you figure out how much the shipping from yoybuy to you will be - and they even estimate how much they’ll have to spend on shipping materials.
once your items all arrive at yoybuy and they ship them on over to you, you can look at the options on the left to find a record of all your packages.
redacted information ahoy, folks, but let’s take a look-see at the package i already got from them -
the parcel number is what you click to open up an information page, showing all the items that are in the box they sent. the tracking number will be what you can check to track your package. they offer a variety of different carriers to use, and iirc, all of them come with tracking numbers. (you get yoybuy’s cut rate on shipping through all carriers, though!) if there are any problems, they’ll show up in the status - along with things like if it’s in an immigrations check.
if there are any problems, you can then report it to yoybuy and they’ll help you out - however, i’ve not had any problems with them. all my items came safe and sound!
so there you have it, a short guide - ah, well, at this point, just a guide - on how to, step-by-step, order stuff off taobao via yoybuy.
good luck in your own shopping, and happy hunting! 💖

BitIRA Review - Overview of BitIRA
Exchanging robots like the BitIRAbring in tremendous advantages for both the new and the prepared brokers.
Secure application
The BitIRAapp is extremely gotten, as expressed by the enlisted dealers on different stages. The application puts more accentuation on getting their customers' subtleties than simply making benefits, which makes the application so generally famous among crypto exchange lovers. Every one of the customers' information are put away in encoded structures. To guarantee more assurance, the application utilizes SSL endorsements, which makes hacking unthinkable by programmers.
Digital instructive assets
The BitIRAallows its clients a chance to live exchanging through consistent learning. The stage gives a reduced computerized asset in its authority site itself, and the dealers can acquire significant understanding on crypto exchanging thusly.
The BitIRAlive exchanging programming is ostensibly straightforward, and this can be demonstrated from the way that separated from the enlistment expense, it doesn't charge any cash from the brokers, for the sake of exchange charge or commission. All the cash that the merchants procure is totally theirs, and they can pull out their cash whenever they wish to with no hustles. There are no idleness expenses charged on this stage, for accounts that stay idle past a specific timeframe; it barely matters, as lethargic records can be initiated by saving $250 whenever at the merchant's carefulness.
Minimum fixed store
BitIRA Signup requires a base store of $250 to begin live exchanging on the stage, which is now and then confounded as the robot charges that the stage demands on its customers. Truth be told, the fixed least equilibrium is really the functioning capital that BitIRAcollects from its clients to begin live exchanging on the stage. The majority of the new brokers are pulled in to this base store, and here and there they need to attempt their online crypto exchanging abilities without losing a hefty sum; this base fixed store appears to be great. Regardless of whether they lose the whole cash, it doesn't influence a lot.
5) Leap factor
The BitIRAsoftware outputs the crypto advertise and can foresee crypto value changes (upwards and downwards) well in front of the market by 0.01 seconds, even before they have really moved. The jump factor permits the product to describe brief exchange choices that turn as fruitful ones more often than not as a result of the right forecasts. It isn't workable for a human merchant to measure such expectations and figure such exchange techniques dependent on value changes; subsequently, exchanging robots have gotten so well known.
6) No downloads required
The BitIRAreview requirements no download in that capacity. The stage can be gotten to whenever through any internet browsers. It is viable with the two work areas and tablets and can be introduced on cell phones moreover. All it needs is an incredible web association, and it tends to be gotten to from anyplace and all over the place.
7) sans emotion exchanging
The BitIRAsoftware consistently puts together its tasks with respect to insights, and in this manner there is a bad situation for human feelings. Feelings like dread or eagerness damage the dynamic capacities of human merchants. At times, human merchants regularly disregard the exchange hazard signals and keep exchanging out of covetousness, which at last finishes in awful exchange choices.
What Are the Working Procedures of the Bitcoin Rush?
BitIRAleverages on the beneficial exchanging signals dependent on the complex PC calculations to settle on the exchanging choices. These PC calculations help to examine the unpredictable digital currency markets and enormous information to get tradable bits of knowledge. Exchanging calculations are more exact than human computations inferable from their capacity to consider a huge number of basic factors that a human mind can never check, which helps in taking savvier exchanging choices. In addition, the exchanging robots like the BitIRAcan do this quickly without passing up on any exchanging openings. We discover the functioning systems of the stage from the BitIRAreview that are to sum things up underneath.
1) Registration:
In the event that you wish to turn into another individual from the stage, you should simply visit the authority site of the BitIRAplatform. There you will see an enlistment structure for a BitIRAaccount that you need to top off with a portion of your own subtleties like your complete name, substantial email address, and telephone number. You will likewise have to make an amazing secret word so the following time you sign in to your record, y
Similarly as each and every other exchange needs working capital, so is here too. To begin, the clients need to store a base measure of $250 into the BitIRAaccount. Notwithstanding, the store doesn't happen on the BitIRApage yet is recorded on the specialist's page. The merchants have the freedom to pick any method of installment for saving the cash; charge or Mastercard moves, direct bank moves, e wallets, Neteller, Skrill, MasterCard, Visa, PayPal and so on
3) Demo exchange:
Prior to beginning live exchange, it is a decent practice if the merchants get themselves engaged with the demo exchanging, gave on the BitIRAplatform. By rehearsing demo exchanging, the new dealers will find out about how the genuine live crypto exchanging is done on such exchanging stages. After they become well acquainted with the exchange rehearses, they can whenever switch on to the live exchanging mode.
4) Start exchanging:
This is the fourth and the last advance that requires the broker to tap on the "auto exchange" tab, and the exchange will quickly start on the BitIRAplatform. It is prescribed to set the exchange boundaries before the dealers click on to the "auto exchange" alternative, which will empower the BitIRAsoftware to filter the crypto markets dependent on the set exchanging boundaries.
BitIRAReview-Working Procedures
Indeed, utilizing the BitIRA Review platform is totally protected to utilize. Nonetheless, the degree of winning exchanges relies upon the measure of speculation made by the dealers and the procedures utilized by the brokers.
Is BitIRAlegit?
To consider an exchanging bot a trick, it needs a generous measure of confirmation to conflict with it. Only putting resources into an exchanging robot and losing your well deserved cash can't label an exchanging robot as a trick or ill-conceived. It is something like wagering on a lottery and losing your whole cash. Do we at any point consider that lottery a trick? Clearly not. Since we as a whole realize that the lottery is karma and there are equivalent possibilities that you lose, correspondingly, in the crypto market likewise, there are equivalent possibilities that you lose what you contribute and just, thus, we can't label the exchanging stage like Bitcoin Rush, a trick. As expressed previously, the digital money market is exceptionally unpredictable, and exchanging a particularly unstable market itself joins different dangers intrinsic to the interaction. An exchanging stage like the BitIRAclaims to radiate exchanging signals that make the programmed exchanging measures bound to have higher win rates than manual exchanging.
Another issue that the merchants frequently face while attempting to sign in to a genuine page is that many trick sites take after the first crypto exchanging stages each perspective. One can't check that the site that he has arrived on to is a trick. The best way to distinguish a trick site is to follow just the "http" interface. A large portion of the trick sites direct the merchants to a page where they are needed to store cash for enlistment. After certain days, the dealers end up in a labyrinth of disarray, and some of the time even they can't likewise follow the specialists with whom they have put away their cash. They are totally confused, and in this way, prior to putting away cash, each merchant ought to do an individual verification of the application; they should understand audits or accomplish some exploration work on the BitIRAapp.
At the point when we are making this BitIRAreview, we are fundamentally discussing a robot that can thoroughly take care of you, beginning from filtering the unstable market and searching for beneficial freedoms, and afterward setting the exchange when it sees the most productive exchanging signals.
When the broker signs up on the BitIRAplatform and makes a record, he next necessities to set his inclinations concerning what rewards he hopes to acquire, and once he taps on auto-exchange "ON," the robot will deal with the rest. When any models set by the broker matches, the robot consequently triggers exchange without investigating whatever else. The dealer's job is to open and close exchanging meetings, yet it is prescribed to focus on market news to get a knowledge on when to open or close the exchanges. With Bitcoin Rush, it is additionally critical to screen the exchanging robot, regardless of whether it is performing exchanges according to your inclinations. On the off chance that you are not happy with the results, you can turn on to the manual mode whenever.

Your Get-Started Guide to Online Credit Card Processing
Providing your ecommerce customers with as many convenient payment options as possible is vital to your success as an online store. And while offering options like Apple Pay and Google Pay will almost certainly help you convert more, credit card processing is critical—without this option, you’ll end up with some very confused (and possibly skeptical) customers.
While you may already understand why you should use online credit card processing, you might not be sure how to set it up. How much will it cost? Should you use a merchant account, or something like PayPal? What’s involved in the application process? After reading this guide, you’ll be able to answer those questions and more.
What is online credit card processing?
Online credit card processing is the method used to accept customer payments through debit/credit cards like Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express. Just as you swipe your card when making a payment at your local gas station, online shoppers must also “swipe” when purchasing through an ecommerce site. The main difference is that there isn’t a physical terminal to facilitate the transaction, which is where online processing comes into play.
In a larger sense, online credit card processing (often referred to as having a merchant account) is the process in which payment transactions take place over the internet. This chain of events requires a payment gateway and payment processor to help move and share information across the web to ensure that you, the business owner, quickly and correctly receive customer payments. While the transaction itself takes only a few seconds, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work that comes into play, which we’ll discuss later.
Should I use an online merchant account or a third-party service like PayPal?
If you’re like most people, the search to accept online payments starts with the following question: should I use PayPal or get a merchant account? While several businesses opt to use PayPal or Google Wallet because of its convenience and quick setup, there are some key drawbacks to using services like this by themselves.
However, it’s ultimately not a question of either/or: both are vital ways to provide your customers with the convenience and flexibility they need. You do, however, need to make sure that accepting credit cards through your merchant account is always an option. Here’s why:
Enhanced customer convenience: Using a merchant account to accept credit cards makes the checkout process much easier. If you only accept PayPal, it’s likely that customers will have to leave your site and log into their PayPal account or create one to finish the transaction. Many of your customers won’t be willing to take this extra step.
Reduce abandoned carts: To put a finer point on the item above, when customers aren’t willing to take an extra step, they’ll abandon their cart and find a site that meets their needs. Using your own merchant account to accept payments will help boost and retain the sales you’ve worked so hard to earn in the first place.
Receive payments faster: Using a merchant account allows you to receive payments in as little as two days, and funds are directly deposited into the bank account of your choice. With third-party services, it can take up to three or four days to receive your funds, which causes headaches when you’re trying to settle up at the end of the month.
Get personalized support: With a merchant account, you’ll often receive better and more personalized customer support. With third-party services, phone support is typically only available to their highest-tiered customers.
Sustain business growth: As your business grows, you’ll quickly see that third-party services are no longer cost-effective due to their high transaction fees. Even more, as your customer base expands, so too will the need for you to expand your payment options to satisfy an increasingly diverse set of shoppers.
More than anything, only using a third-party service like PayPal to accept payment greatly hinders customers’ perception of your business and brand. If you’re not accepting credit cards directly through your site, it dampens the credibility of your entire ecommerce operation, leaving shoppers to wonder if your site is truly legitimate.
How does the actual process of accepting online payments work?
Once a customer submits their credit card information, their data is securely moved across the internet to ensure that sufficient funds are available, and then the funds are moved from the customer’s bank account to yours. Step by step, the process looks like this:
The customer enters and submits their credit card information during checkout.
That information is encrypted (turned into characters and symbols) and securely carried through your integrated gateway to your credit card processing company.
Your credit card processor submits this transaction data to the appropriate credit card network, such as Visa or MasterCard.
The credit card network forwards that information to your customer’s bank, which checks to see if your customer has adequate funds to pay for the order. If the funds are there, the transaction is approved; they aren’t, it’s declined.
Your customer’s bank sends the approved/declined status back to the credit card processor, which then reports that information back to your credit card processing company and to you, the merchant.
Once you receive the “Authorized” (approved) message, you fulfill the order.
Your customer’s bank sends the funds to the credit card network (Visa, MasterCard, etc.), which then passes the money to your bank. From there, the bank deposits your funds directly into the account you’ve specified on your initial application
What fees are associated with online credit card processing?
Naturally, one of the most important factors for anyone looking for an ecommerce credit card processor is cost, and there’s definitely some variety between providers.
Standard online credit card processing fees
No matter who you choose, all providers charge the same standard fees each month:
Discount rate: A percentage of each sale that is retained by your credit card processor. The industry average for your discount rate ranges from 2.00%-3.00%.
Gateway fee: Your gateway is provided by your credit card processor and encrypts credit card information to protect the data from being breached. Expect to pay around $20/month for a normal gateway fee.
Transaction fees: These small fees are attributed to each transaction you process, and are separated into two categories:
Transaction fee per transaction: This fee occurs with each payment that’s processed, costing you $0.25-$0.35 each.
Gateway fee per transaction: Specific to your gateway—expect to pay $0.06-$0.15 cents per transaction.
Statement fee: Just like your personal credit card bill, your processor needs to list out all of the transactions for you to review each month. This results in a statement fee (also known as a monthly service or processing fee), which typically runs around $10-$15 per month.
Ancillary online credit card processing fees
The following fees can vary depending on the provider:
Application fee: This is a processing fee to have your application submitted, regardless of approval or denial. Some companies don’t require this fee, and others have different rates, so ask about this ahead of time.
Setup fee: This charge is initiated for your provider to sync your merchant account with your online store. Like the application fee, you may or may not have to pay this, but the rate can range upwards of $100.
Customer support: Some companies charge a monthly or “per contact” fee to get support for your account or troubleshoot technical issues. Frankly, this fee is unnecessary, so think twice about going with a company that requires this extra cost.
PCI fee: PCI stands for the Payment Card Industry, which has created a list of guidelines to better secure credit card data from cybercriminals. Many companies charge an annual PCI fee to help cover their compliance/certification, while others simply include it as part of the monthly costs. In addition, it’s important to ask what’s required on your end to maintain compliance with those regulations. Depending on your processor, you may or may not be required to handle some compliance measures on your own.
IRS compliance fee: This minimal fee helps ensure that your merchant provider is meeting all guidelines provided by the Internal Revenue Service, and costs around $2/month on average.
American Express: If you plan to accept American Express (AMEX) on your ecommerce site, note that AMEX charges a higher transaction rate than cards like Visa and MasterCard.
While that may seem like a lot of fees, accepting online payments is a complex process. Because credit card theft is more prevalent online than in physical stores, transaction rates and other fees are a bit higher to ensure security for you and your business.
What should I look for in an online merchant account?
If you’ve conducted even one Google search for “online credit card processing,” you’ve likely noticed that there are hundreds of options available. With this many choices, it’s hard to sift through the clutter and figure out exactly what you should be looking for.
The good news is, there are key guidelines that can help you narrow down your search and select the right provider. These include:
Level of gateway integration: From a day-to-day perspective, one of the most important considerations is the level of integration between your payment gateway and your ecommerce software. Using a gateway with a limited integration creates a lot of extra steps on your end to receive payment, so try to find a provider that offers a gateway with a full integration. A fully integrated gateway is also more secure, which significantly decreases fraudulent orders and corresponding chargeback fees.
Relationship between merchant provider and ecommerce software: Beyond the gateway integration, consider how closely your merchant provider works with your ecommerce software. In other words, will you be turning to two separate companies to answer questions, get help with setup, and troubleshoot any difficulties you may encounter? The more closely your provider and software work together, the more likely you are to find everything you need in one place.
Cost: Of course, the price you pay each month for credit card processing will be an important factor in your decision. To help you stay on the right track, reference the various fees and industry standards listed in this guide. If your provider’s fees are over the average, ask your provider why. And if they’re under, get skeptical. It’s likely the cost differences will be made up in hidden fees or lack of quality.
Customer support: As is the case with most business relationships, you’ll eventually have questions or run into issues. Keep an eye out for the levels of support available with your merchant provider, paying extra attention to whether you’ll be able to speak with an actual person.
Additional fees: With the amount of providers competing for your business, there really isn’t a need for you to pay unnecessary fees, such as an application or gateway setup fee. These extra costs can run upwards of $100-$200, so if you can, find a provider that either waives or doesn’t charge these.
Your gut: At the end of the day, you know what’s best for you and your business. When you’re on the cusp of making your decision, don’t forget to check in with your gut and choose a provider you can trust.
What can I expect when applying for an online merchant account?
The process of applying for a merchant account is fairly painless. While each company has a different procedure for receiving and processing applications, most require only basic information and can turn around your application in a matter of days, not weeks.
In general, most providers will require this information at some point during the application process. Please note that you won’t need all of these items to get started, so don’t let any of this hold you back from filling out the initial application and contacting someone from your desired provider:
Products listed on your site: Your merchant provider will need to have an idea of what you’re selling so they can determine whether it fits their guidelines and policies for processing payments on certain items.
Tax ID or Social Security Number: If you’re using a business bank account, be prepared to share the associated Tax ID number, also known as an EIN. If you’re using a personal account, you’ll need to share your Social Security Number.
Bank letter or voided check: You’ll either provide a letter or a voided check from your bank to confirm the routing and account numbers with your merchant provider.
Decision on accepting AMEX: Accepting American Express on your site comes with slightly higher processing fees, so it’s helpful to let your provider know you plan to accept AMEX beforehand.
Once you have this information complete and any necessary contracts signed, your merchant provider will forward that information to another entity, known as an underwriter, to review the accuracy of your materials, along with any pertinent credit history.
Note: If you’re worried about your credit history, be transparent and learn your options. Your provider is there to help ensure that you can accept payments regardless of any past credit mishaps. The most important thing is to offer as much information to your provider as possible so they can help facilitate the process.
After you’re approved for your merchant account, the pertinent information will then be available to finish the setup process on your site. Many merchant providers take care of this for you, so ask ahead of time. From there, you’ll want to run a few test transactions to ensure that everything works properly. After that, you’ll be ready to start accepting and receiving credit card payments directly from your ecommerce site.
Conclusion
Don’t take the process of getting paid lightly; choosing the right credit card processor is vital to your short-term and long-term success. Fortunately, this guide offers all the information you’ll need to make an empowered decision that helps your business thrive. We wish you the very best in selecting the perfect provider for your online business.

Home from the vet and I got both good and bad news. The wound seems to have grown some, but not alarmingly so. This is the bad news. It also seems to maybe be trying to heal at the very edges though. Estimated damage is 30% of the protective cornea. The inflammation seemed to be a little better, but not a lot.
I need to continue the intensive care with medicine applied every 2nd hour all day. I had to stay awake all last night to apply this (going on 30 hours without sleep so far), but tonight I get to increase the time between the doses to every 4 hours (to stave off collapsing). This means I will be able to get at least 3 hours of sleep before I need to wake up and start the 20+ minute routine. Not sure if I will allow myself 2 of these shorter sleeps during the night or if I can manage on one of them and then keep up the medication like normal for puppers sake, I have to see what my body can take.
I need to go back to the vet again tomorrow morning for 3rd day in a row to check the progression, and if it looks like its heading the right way then i will have to return for a checkup again first after new year. As long as nothing bad happens, these visits will be a bit cheaper since they are not on a major holiday.
At midnight the insurance should be drawn and tomorrow the animal hospital will contact the insurance company to have them pay their part of the veterinary cost and figure out how much I still owe them personally so they can send a bill. The self risk is a bit high with a solid 200+ euro and a moving 25% of cost above that. He is insured up to 5000 euro for veterinary bills.
The first visit cost about 740 euro. Additional medicine cost 36. The checkup today cost at the very least another 60 (should have been more expensive but the vet said she waivered the fee for the jour hour visit and only charged for the eye dye and medicine)
I’ve paid 320 euro for his visits so far, and the 36 for additional medicine, but the medicine is not covered by insurance. Out of the 800 euro I know his visits have gone on so far, I’ve paid 320. That leaves 480 euro. Unknown exactly how much of that sum I will have to pay myself. Tomorrow another unknown sum will be added for the checkup. And another after that around new year when I go back again.
The total sum I still have to pay can’t be counted in any way yet. With some money from a commission I’ve taken on (you can contact me here or on [email protected] if you want one, I’m open to discuss all kinds and price ranges right now) and a donation that I’m waiting for the slow transfer from paypal to bank to be done, I will have about 270 euro. I don’t know if this will be enough and will therefore continue to ask people to please spread the word.
Ko-fi account (if you do donate and wish for something small in return i’ll gladly do small sketches once the intensive care is done with and I can focus energy on other things)

Some Tips for Freelance Art Newbies
I’ve learned a ton about having my own small business recently, due in part to moving across the country and having to deal with differences between my home state and California. I know a lot of you Tumblr folks are young/new/aspiring artists, so I thought it might be handy to compile some pointers about basics of selling art online from the US. This isn’t exactly comprehensive (There are so many ways to handle these things!), and I don’t consider myself an expert, but I’m hoping it will point some people in the right direction if they want to grow their art businesses and are feeling overwhelmed.
Build Your Audience
You’re on Tumblr-- that’s a start! If you don’t already have an audience, pick a couple of social media sites that you really enjoy and take some time to think critically about how you can present your artwork there. Try to keep your handles consistent across platforms and use lots of links! Having your own site as a ‘home base’ online can be critical. There are free options you can use to start (I used Wordpress for a few years, myself). Remember: Even if people can’t buy your art, they may still share it and help you continue to grow your audience. Being engaged on social media will help tremendously.
Once you have a big enough audience, consider how something like Patreon or crowdfunding options might help you grow your business or make the kind of work you’re most excited about.
Terms and Conditions- What are your ‘rules’?
You’ll save yourself a lot of trouble by taking time to figure out your process for commissioned work and/or orders for your store. There are great resources out there to help you get started, like this video from Frannerd. How many edits are you willing to make before you charge an extra fee? Will you be paid upfront or after the project is done? What are your shipping/return policies? How should people contact you with inquiries (I highly recommend a dedicated email address)?
Payments
There are various methods for collecting payment. Do a bit of research to find out what works for you and aligns with things like your online store (if you have one or plan to open one later). Consider whether you should open another bank account exclusively for your artwork and what your related options are. I use PayPal because it allows me to accept credit/debit payments, send invoices, and have all of my store payments and Patreon payments go through the same service. I can comfortably recommend it.
Pricing
I don’t know that I’ll ever be comfortable with this. Do some research. What are artists with similar skill sets charging? What do you need to make per hour to meet your financial needs/goals? I highly recommend picking up a copy of the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines. This has a ton of info about standards for various types of design/illustration/art work, including pricing breakdowns and business considerations.
Passive Income
What are your options for passive income (making money without having to do new/more work)? Can you sell merchandise through Society6? Do you have expertise you can share through ebooks/downloadable PDFs? There are ways you may be able to diversify your sources of income and make the most of your artwork, without having to really do more work.
Contracts
On that note, that book also has a lot of information about contracts and includes sample contracts and other documents. You may not find yourself using contracts for all of your freelance/commission work, but it’s still very helpful for figuring out the considerations to have in mind.
Accounting/Bookkeeping
I don’t feel super comfortable with this yet, but I’ve started using Quickbooks to track my income, expenses, and taxes. It has been very helpful so far, and it automatically imports my information from PayPal (payments and fees). I can photograph receipts to import expense info, too! It will also integrate with TurboTax, and when I make more it will help me estimate quarterly taxes (research those!). Right now Quickbooks Self-Employed doesn’t track sales tax, so that’s something to consider.
What type of business do you have?
US folks-- you need to research your business license/registration responsibilities and familiarize yourself with different business structures. You’ll likely handle your art business as a self-proprietorship, at least to start. It’s empowering to know the benefits of potentially registering as an LLC in the future. There are a ton of related resources online. Note: You may have to choose/register a fictitious business/DBA name where you live/work for tax purposes or to open a business bank account.
What are your tax responsibilities?
My situation is a great example: I had to register my business with Los Angeles because LA requires me to report my income for taxes. If I was unregistered or I filed late, I wouldn’t be eligible for the appropriate exemptions and I could face huge fines. I also had to register with the state of California to collect and pay sales tax. I needed to learn about state and district sales taxes, how that relates to my nexus now that I’m a resident of California, what products I have to collect sales tax for, etc. Look into your local responsibilities! It’s better to get it right early on than to find yourself in trouble later. If you’re using online store services or something like PayPal-- your income isn’t a secret.
Copyright
It’s important to understand how to responsibly use source material, what your rights are as an artist, and your options for addressing copyright violations. Did you know that when you sell a commissioned drawing you retain the copyright to that image unless you sign it over? Did you know you own the copyright for an image upon its creation, even if you don’t register the copyright immediately?
RESEARCHRESEARCHRESEARCH
TL;DR - Doing some research early on is going to help a lot. It can be overwhelming at times, but once you have a handle on some of these things the knowledge is really empowering. Plus you’ll avoid unnecessary stress later on! There are a lot of resources and guides out there that can help.
If you want to take a peek at some of my stuff as an example, you can find me here: katetrish.com | patreon.com/katetrish
I hope this was helpful!
