Additional background: my husband and I both grew up in Japan. Halloween, which originated in the British Isles, is a Strange and Mysterious Thing to Japan. Sanrio will make product of anything, especially if San Francisco is into it, so we had been gently exposed to Halloween by American movies and Hello Kitty merchandise, but other than our understanding that it was kind of like our year-end spookies, it was fascinatingly alien. (A/N: Yes, my father grew up in West Texas, but we never visited those family members in autumn, so my initial firsthand experience with Halloween was when I went to university.) As a result, my husband developed a fixation with Halloween that shows similarities to the semi-obsessive-but-snobbish interest level of 19th century hobbyist entomologists, or perhaps Victorian taxidermists. He judges his decor options harshly, and has a self-imposed volume limit--as a result, he culls the herd each year. The one time I made the mistake of asking for an explanation, he looked like a conspiracy theorist in the grips of a manic episode. I live in dread of the day he decides he needs a Halloween Tree, which he would almost definitely keep up from September 30 to January 7 every year.
