@angelsdean here: While I do agree with a lot of the bitter deangirl posting abt the Trap I also have always still liked the scene? and offer a slightly less bitter perspective.

I have always viewed the scene less as Dean thinking he NEEDS to apologize but more as Dean understanding Cas feels he needs Dean to forgive him. I read the whole scene (and episode) from the POV of Cas being very rooted in his own insecurities, and thus projecting out a bit and deflecting and being short with Dean. Because purgatory is magnifying Cas's own guilt and well, Cas isn't handling it well. And you Know i am the first to get angry on Dean's behalf and I DO think Cas is being a unfair, but, I think I also need to practice what I preach in the sense that, if it were Dean behaving like this I'd be talking abt his own grief and pain and motivating factors. and i think that applies to cas in this case. he's still in a lot of pain. Cas also bound by his empty deal, possibly purposely keeping Dean at arms length out of fear of triggering the deal if they reconcile too well. We see that "arms length" maneuver at play imo when Dean has more he wants to say and Cas cuts him off. I think, perhaps, part of Cas felt SAFE while they were "divorced" / fighting because at least then he KNEW he'd never be truly happy. Which just breaks my heart for both of them.

Anyways. Dean. We know he's a self aware king. And he's also incredibly emotionally intelligent when it comes to others. Empathy boy, etc. and Cas is his best friend. He knows Cas better than anyone else. And I think he knows Cas is beating himself up. Feeling guilty for everything AND displacing that guilt and anger. Because yea, Dean's been there. And dean's dealt with Sam and John doing similar things too. He understands. And yea it sucks that he's once again putting the feelings of others first, but at the same time, that's his MO. He's the one who cares abt everyone. He's the beating heart of the narrative. And he loves cas. He does. So of course he's going to make sure Cas knows he's forgiven (was always forgiven! implicitly!) and that Cas matters to him. He's his best friend. He never wanted him to leave! (the cut "of course I wanted you to stay" IS canon to me. He said that part quietly, internally, ok).

I view the whole prayer as Dean giving Cas what he needs. Telling Cas what he needs to hear in that moment (and it's not that I think dean doesn't means these things, he does! but I think dean didn't think it needed to be said-- that Dean forgives Cas. that Cas matters to him. but again, Cas is not at his best. In normal circumstances I think Cas wouldn't need to hear it. But just as DEAN is doubting what's real, what matters, I think so is Cas. Yes he told Dean they were what's real, but a lot has happened since then. He let bel's words in hell get to him a bit, for one. He's now feeling out of place in his family, not sure if he ever mattered at all. And so he needs a little reassurance imo. And that's what the prayer scene is to me. It's not about Dean begging to be forgiven. It's dean giving Cas what he needs for Cas to be able to forgive himself.)

As for the stuff abt Dean apologizing for his "anger" -- anger that was justified and part of his grief (he is allowed to be upset that his "son" killed his mom!)-- and "groveling": I don't like it. I don't like that Dean is seemingly positioned as "the bad guy" and the reason for their separation when Cas was the one who CHOSE to leave instead of stay and work things out. And when Cas, in his own pain, stopped giving Dean "the benefit of the doubt."

However. Despite hating it all from a deangirl perspective, I think from DEAN'S own perspective, this IS stuff he believes about himself. Dean has his own fears and insecurities and I think being "angry" and "becoming John" are genuine fears. And I think it's important to remember that what characters say about themselves isn't the Objective Truth. We KNOW Dean is most often "not mad, worried." We KNOW Dean cares so so much and loves so fiercely. We know he's more than his "off" moments. We give him that benefit of the doubt. But Dean? He'll beat himself up for everything. And Cas echos this in the confession when he tells Dean "you see yourself how our enemies see you....You think that hate and anger, that's what drives you. It's not." As much as I think yea Cas should've said all this sooner, I think this part is indeed a response to Dean's prayer. And it's basically Cas saying, "yea all that stuff you said earlier abt always being angry and your anger being the problem, no you're wrong<3 and I do know that you care so so much. About me and jack and sam and the whole world. And everything you do comes from a place of love and good intentions."

Would I have liked to have heard Cas say all this immediately after the prayer and would it have been more effective in relaying the message that Cas doesn't think Dean is ruled by anger or that Dean needs to grovel for his forgiveness over it? yea. yea I think the confession coming 9 episodes later kind of breaks up the flow of this arc. But in this reading, I am willing to give Cas some grace. Right after the prayer they were still under a lot of stress to get back to earth and stop Chuck. Cas is also feeling conflicted abt his deal. Not knowing what he CAN say to Dean. What is even safe to say. And the fact that (imo) a big part of Cas's moment of happiness IS getting to tell Dean how good he is and not Just the declaration of love, just shows that maybe it Wasn't safe for Cas to say all these things to Dean earlier.

Anyways. This has gotten very long but I just wanted to offer a different perspective, that doesn't absolve Cas of his wrong-doings or the part he played in their separation, but is more considerate of Cas's own POV. AND shows Dean being thee heart of the narrative and giving Cas what Cas needs to hear, being emotionally intelligent, but also being just as insecure as anyone else re: his own self-image.

publishing this now because i think you're making a lot of sense and i cannot tell you how much i appreciate your perspective and the time you took to lay it out! i want to respond more thoroughly later but i didn't want to let this languish when it's so dang important and helpful.

Ok, so I finally finished re-watching Don't Go Into the Woods, and I noticed that Sam is doing the same thing he did with Claire Novak a little bit!

So, at the start of the episode, he doesn't even seem all that aware of the stress Jack, Dean, Cas are under. In the previous episode, Peace of Mind, Sam is wrapped up in his own grief and failings, and Cas steps in to mentor him (note Cas also wanted to let Dean get some much-needed sleep).

Here, in Don't Go Into the Woods, Sam starts out gung-ho about the hunt, but by the end of the episode, he's clamped onto his moral-fixation-of-the-moment, inspired by the case-of-the-week, where a Dean-and-Cas coded sheriff has lied to a son to protect him.

And here's the thing. I's a little bit true, right? Dean is tiptoeing around Jack, chipperly telling him that "his mission is SHOPPING!"

BUT.

Sam's being sanctimonious-Sam here.

Because... Dean's been the one trying to take care of Sam AND Jack when Sam was running everyone ragged by diving into case after case (when Sam was trying to forget about losing the AU hunters).

Now, weeks later, Sam suddenly checks back in to trying to be apart of the co-parenting village.

DEAN: So telling the kid--you think that's the best idea? SAM: What? You don't? DEAN: It doesn't make his life any better, you know?

Oof. Ow.

Dean is so sad.

He knows something is wrong with his kid, but he doesn't know how to fix it. BECAUSE it's not simple.

But Sam? After weeks of being "out of it," Sam has hyper-focused on The Good (simple) Thing (TM) he thinks is gonna fix it.

For Sam, it's simple. Don't lie, and everything else solves itself! :D Talk it out, and all your problems will just melt away.

DEAN: I took care of it, okay? We took care of it. SAM: No, no Dean. We did not take care of it.

(BRB, hitting Sam with a newspaper. )

Dean was trying to include Sam as a kindness here (especially since Sam's been AWOL), but Sam is framing this as a "Dean is so controlling" issue. In fact, it's a part of the larger "Sam is checking out," one.

And hey--we are absolutely sympathetic to Sam checking out, to using hunting to ease his turbulence. He's not the only character to do so!

However, Sam is a character that tends to check out, come back, and immediately go into sanctimonious LECTURE mode and that’s frustrating:

SAM (judgily): No, no Dean. We did not take care of it. You did.

Yeah, Sam. That's kind of the whole friggin' point here!!!

For weeks now, Dean and Cas having been taking trying their darnedest to care of YOU, of Jack, of everything! Dean is even the one who checked in on the phone with your friend ROWENA.

Cas is going the other direction, taking on too much. He's out trying to take care of things ON HIS OWN AS YOU SPEAK. Dean's on the hold-down-the-fort-homefront, and Cas is on the big-solution-oriented-battlefront.

All Dean does is exhale a little. "Ha..."

SAM: And do you think you really took care of it the right way?

....

......................................

Sam. Sammy.

....

Anyway, so Dean. He's hit with this...blunt, hamfisted unkindness from Sam after his Michael-possession and superhuman efforts to take care of everyone, so he scrambles.

DEAN: "Jack said he was fine."

And obviously, Dean knows Jack isn't fine.

HE'S the one that was wanting to give Jack more space and time before going hunting, after all. (See: beginning of this VERY episode.) Sam wasn't even thinking about Jack's wellbeing at all. It hasn't been on his radar for weeks at this point. He wanted to take Jack on a hunt to make himself feel better!!! Sam was the one berating Dean for not wanting to bring Jack along and sassily reminding him that Jack was (via Donatello) "is in the clear."

And so, Sam does an about-face here. Inspired by the case, he identifies lying as Theeee Issue:

SAM: "He's a kid. And when we were kids, how many times did we tell dad we say were fine just to make him happy?"

...

Oh.

Like you did earlier this very episode, Sam?

*coughs*

Sigh.

In the context of the last few weeks and his cluelessness in the beginning of this episode, wanna know why Sam is using this issue as a crutch?

Because now that Sam's checked into the village parenting club again, he's latching onto something that's easier to control than everything else: words.

Cause Sam's simplifying the whole sitch.

(It's why Sam's boundaries with Jack tend to be "easy-mode" parenting, like his berating Jack's sugary sweets/diet. These are tasks that allow Sam to remain "the good guy in Jack's corner" without doing the "hard-mode" parenting that turns the parent into a Bad Guy.)

Sam thinks talking out "the truth" will magically fix Jack's complex issues...ones Sam's been conveniently ignoring for weeks.

And Dean is being so beautifully understanding about it. Acquiescing and trying things Sam's way.

Sam slinks in the background at first, letting Dean do the greeting and the talking at first, waiting for his moment to swoop in and provide "sage, Sammy-time advice" That he has no doubt been rehearsing silently in the car.

And Dean...despite shielding Jack from the truth, is being honest in other emotional ways. He emphasizes how he didn't particularly like the gross parts of the hunt. Camaraderie.

[[Aside, in the very beginning of the episode, Sam judgmentally raked Dean over the FUCKIN' COALS for jumping at the sight of the dead body. "How many years you been doing this job, Dean? You're embarrassing me here.")]]

Enter Sam. Parent mode activated!

God help us.

DEAN, comically annoyed that Jack didn't get the beer...

....and MAYBE wondering if Sam's bull-in-the-China-shop parenting is going to work right here at this ill-timed moment or not.

The thing is, Sam is right about some aspects of this! It's a good thing to talk to Jack about his powers! Like how Cas needs to talk to Jack about the snake! How Dean needs to stop being so afraid of the truth that he goes into denial mode.

BUT!

At its base, the Sam method tends to chafe.

Jack's been INCREDIBLY defensive lately, something Cas and Dean know well and have clearly talked about with each other freely. In Peace of Mind, they both used the snake to talk to Jack soas not to trigger Jack's defensiveness.

But Sam? Sam's been way outta the loop. And it shows.

SAM: Jack LISTEN. Dean and I wanted to talk to you about your powers.

And again, I'm not saying Sam's wrong. He's just...unfortunately very Sam about things even when he's right. He's able to occasionally give good advice, like to Mary about AU Bobby!

There's no real...100% wrong stance here.

After all, maybe it would've been better for Jack to come along with them (or maybe it would've gone terribly)?

Aside// And Dean may have good intentions in wanting to lie to protect his son Jack, but Dean definitely doesn't want his partner Cas to lie to him to spare him pain.

(Or, actually, via the script, that's not quite true. He SIMULTANEOUSLY wants Cas to tell him about the snake, and he DOESN'T want Cas to tell him about the snake. Lol, oh the spouse-codedness of that.)

ANYHOO. Dean gracefully enters the conversation, trying to be frank but IMHO clearly having misgivings about this approach and timing:

DEAN: It was crappy of us not to tell you. You know, we were trying to be nice. 'Cause we care about you. But because we care about you, you deserve the truth.

And Jack has a moment of indecision here, clearly thinking about his own lie. Ordinarily, Jack might come clean about how his powers injured someone (and then healed them). But not now. Not with how things have been lately.

Here...psychologically wounded from consuming Michael's grace, feeling flat inside, feeling guilty and disconnected from everything...he remains quiet.

Not to mention, Sam's up in his face like this:

Jeebus. No wonder Jack didn't say anything.

Make no mistake, Jack is annoyed by the constant hovering. He says as much in Game Night, and something about this cerebral-scripted-Sam-method IMHO works the least with Jack.

(We see that in Tombstone, too.)

I think Dean realizes that Jack's withdrawing here, that this method, despite it's moral clarity, wasn't entirely effective or successful for getting through to Jack:

At least with Cas, Jack allowed himself to get mad, to speak freely. (Same with Mary in Game Night. He lets his real emotions show.)

But this? Sam's pushing?

He shuts down:

Dean tips his head back, like "Oh crap." Perhaps thinking to himself, HOLY MOLEY THAT DID NOT WORK AT ALL.

He even makes a Cas face about it:

And the fun part is: Jack knows that Dean knows.

You can see it in the flash of side-eyes he gives Dean here before turning back to Sam. But when Jack looks back to Sam, he does this little "I'm so innocent" act. (But Dean' isn't going to push because, historically, Jack hasn't liked that.)

And Sam? Sam looks overjoyed because he's a dumbass who missed...everything.

Dean on the other hand...is...more understanding of the fuck-all progress that actually made here. He swings his arms like, "Whelp. That was useless."

Sam is like YISSS I HAVE DONE IT I HAVE CONQUERED PARENTING IN ALL MY WISDOM

DEAN (sarcastically): Great. And I guess I'll go get some beer.

ok ok ok .. this antichrist child in this episode.. when Cas explains about him.. did anyone else feet it related more to Sam than Jesse? Notice how the camera is focused on Sam when Cas talks about this child. Here's what Castiel said: The demons will find this child. Lucifer will twist this boy to his purpose. And then with a word (I'm guessing it's a nod at Sam saying yes) this child will destroy the host of heaven.

Now when Sam is fighting with Cas about his ridiculous idea of killing the kid, he makes a good point of telling the truth to the kid so he can make the right choice. But Cas taunts Sam that he didn't. Well, fuck you Cas because no one told Sam the truth. You and your band of loser angels just prepared him like a sacrificial lamb. So get the fuck off

holy mother! Why is no one talking about Sam and Jesse parallels?!?!

Demon to Jesse: they (Jesse's foster parents) loved you so much they made your whole life a lie. Look into your heart Jesse. You've always known you weren't theirs. hi!! i've spent the better part of my morning browsing through some of your tags, and i just wanted to tell you how much i enjoy you posting about young dean / queer dean and how it makes me so genuinely happy to read your thoughts on the matter (that i generally completely agree with btw). dean being well aware of his sexuality from the start is one of the most important aspects of the show for me at the moment.

i don't want to write a whole poem in your inbox but i am having so many Thoughts! my personal interpretation is that dean had already pretty much come to terms with his sexuality pre stanford era, and was actively and deliberately seeking dudes in his late teens (esp when he was away from sam and john and maybe had a chance to feel more free and unrestrained). i completely understand why people look at him and think '🫵 repressed' (i did too) but to me its so much more interesting and compelling and it adds so much more to his character to imagine him growing into his queer identity so comfortably (i love to think that, despite eveything, there was a part of himself that he didn't completely hate or reject, does this make sense?). also as you said, being repressed is def not the only reason why a person might have to suppress/not be loud about their sexuality. we don't talk about this nearly enough!! i NEED to read headcanons and fics and metas and see art about young queer dean!

I love Stanford Era so much because it's really this time where I see Dean being at his most free, but also most lonely. And I think he's trying to make connections, and trying new things, and really getting to be. And I also love the idea of teen Dean carving out these pockets for himself too, when John is away, or when Dean gets sent away :( :( :(

I think Dean started figuring out pretty early on that he was "different." I wrote this little fic a while back exploring some aspects of Dean's gender + sexuality throughout the years, I haven't revisited it in a while and I feel like some of my thoughts may have changed but it's still a really special fic to me.

Lately, I've also been working on another little fic set during the summer Dean is 14. He and Sam are staying at Bobby's and while the fic is centered around something else, there are small moments where we see Dean's budding awareness of his sexuality. (There's a cute boy at a produce stand and a hot lifeguard at the community pool and lots of magazine clippings of Harrison Ford and Patrick Swayze---he just wants to be like them, ok!) And it's like he's aware but he also can't really look at those feelings directly yet. (Also the art you made recently of young Dean "figuring it out" is so near and dear to my heart!!)

Then I have two Stanford Era time-travel WIPs (hiiii Cas!) And oh boy. This guy is SO GONE on Cas from the jump! And that's what I love so much about Stanford Era Dean (or well, my Stanford Era Dean), is that he's just in such a free point in his life, and so open to new experiences. He's not freaking out abt his immediate attraction and infatuation with Cas. In fact, where Older Dean (our Dean) is more...restrained, perhaps, in his feelings (not that he doesn't express them! i am team dean + his big feelings) but just that my personal interpretation re: the dean + his feelings for Cas timeline has him thinking / convincing himself that Cas doesn't feel the same way for him in the later seasons. So this Older Dean has kind of just, accepted that fact. And is trying not to wear his heart on his sleeve so much (and not really succeeding at all). But Stanford Era Dean? Oh no no no. He is a little shit stirrer and a smitten kitten and is both immediately clocking the situationship-and-mututal-feelings happening between Dean and Cas (it's so obvious to everyone on the outside looking in) AND he's actively flirting with Cas and just lighting up under any and all attention from him (because he's also so so lonely. and touch-starved. and craving affection).

Anyways, all this to say, I am always here to talk abt young queer Dean / Stanford Era Dean !!! I'd love to hear more of your headcanons too💞

the one where jack is like turning into a bomb bc dean wants to throw him at chuck lmao. cas telling sam “you’re not crazy, your instincts are right” - something he always wants to hear but is never told bc opposing dean IS crazy in this universe. dean pulling a gun on sam when he tries to protect jack. dean being like “ok quickly you guys keep it moving” to cas and jack while sam is on the ground but cas looking around dean to ask sam “why should we stop? is there another way out of this” - direct disobedience of dean from Castiel Angel Of The Lord. bc sam was telling them to stop and it’s their son’s life on the line. dean having such a violently negative reaction to finding out that he’s expected to be puppeteered by someone else (chuck) for the rest of his life bc he Cannot lose control like that, whereas sam’s been painfully aware of his own lack of control for most of the past 15 years so he’s like it’ll be okay dean we’ve dealt with worse we’ll get through it together. deans “I would sacrifice everyone in the world to be able to kill chuck right now I don’t care!!!!” and sam knowing perfectly well what he’s doing when he asks him “even me? you’d sacrifice me?” chuck bursting in when sam gets dean to put the gun down (bc dean’s destructive tendencies are always aimed at Other People - most often sam - and they are always framed as self-destructive/suicidal, which is Fascinating and horrible) fed up with these stupid defective brothers for never giving him the poetic fratricide ending he wants - they’re not like the other pairs of protagonists he built, they’re “too sad, too broken,” too willing to give up pieces of themselves and everything else to be able to stay together. he’s been watching them do this infuriating dance for years and he’s sick of them. to say nothing of chuck and amara at the beginning and how their ending contrasts with samndean’s. the title of the episode is unity and in it dean points a gun at sam and knocks him to the ground bc he’s trying to stop him from sending their kid off to violently die . in the halls of the family home which is a bunker isolated from the rest of the world bristling with metaphorical ghosts .

lowkey this is the true finale to me every episode post 15.17 is mostly meaningless fluff in my mind

“Where am I now?” You glanced around seeing a very few buildings, in the distance you saw what you thought was a sleazy hotel, sighing you started walking towards it. You wish you could know what the heck was going on, you were so close and then you “jumped again” After a while you realized the hotel seemed even further away than you thought.

Everything hurt and you really just wanted a soft bed and a shower. Before you can gather your bearings the roar of an engine makes your jump. A sleek, black and chrome car rounds the corner and all you can do is brace yourself for the inevitable impact, but you’re surprised when the car stops right next to you. Grumbling to yourself you hoped it wasn’t some grade A creeper, you hear someone talking to you “Sweetheart, do you need a ride?”

Getting ready to throw some attitude at the driver you turn, and are shocked. The man talking to you looks at you confused “Sweetheart you good?” You gape at him,slowly shaking your head no "No I was just in New York where am I now?" you take a shaky breath as you shake your head hoping that this is a dream. Sighing the man looks to the passenger and stops the car gesturing to the back seat “Come on sweetheart get in and we’ll at least take you to the hotel up the road, it's a little hot to be walking outside today, and you’re in Lebanon Kansas”

Looking at him, you swallow he looks sincere his green eyes looking at you with concern, the spray of freckles across his face make him look younger and you can’t help but smile “Uh sure thanks, sorry can’t be too careful nowadays” The man nods and smiles “I agree sweetheart, name’s Dean, Dean Winchester. This is my brother Sam and sometimes an angel will sorta appear. His name is Castiel.” You almost let out a squeal, you thought he looked familiar. You watched all of Supernatural more times than you could count, had any and all merchandise and were mildly obsessed with Dean Winchester. And now you were staring at him, his brother and Baby…..you couldn’t believe how your day…days were going.

Sliding into the car you gently shut the door knowing how much Dean cared for his Baby, unable to hide the smile on your face you looked over to Dean and Sam “Thanks so much for picking me up, been on any interesting hunts lately?” Suddenly the car stops and there is a gun pointed at you from Dean “Who the hell are you,are you a demon or one of those dickhead angels?” Sam looks at Dean “Come on Dean maybe there is an explanation..” 

“Dean put the gun away, this woman is clearly not from this universe” You turn to your left and see Castiel, nodding you clear your throat “He’s right! I swear I was just somewhere else in a different universe and I jumped, I honestly have no idea how this is even happening” Glancing at the men you blush feeling embarrassed, Dean chuckles softly “It’s ok sweetheart if Cas says you’re from another universe we believe him, trust me this won’t be the weirdest thing we’ve ever seen” Winking at you he smirks and turns back around and starts Baby back up, driving the short distance to the hotel. Checking everyone in you wait for the brothers before entering the hotel room, looking around you smile “Oh magic fingers! These are great! Anyone got some quarters?”

Dean laughs and smiles moving closer to you “Sweetheart I think I’m going to like you being here, see that Sammy another Magic Fingers enthusiast. Now sweetheart tell us everything that happened before you got here, every detail. Cas get down here please so you can help explain things” Hearing wings you look and see Castiel smiling at you, sitting next to you “Hello again” Smiling you nod “Hello again Castiel Angel of the Lord” Dean rolls his eyes slightly and sits on your right side, placing his hand on your knee “Go on sweetheart tell us your story” Nodding you start telling them everything including how you had just jumped when you were walking on the road, Sam look intrigued while Dean looks sad and so does Castiel “Everything she said is accurate Dean” Dean nods “But how does so go back to her right universe? She can’t just keep bouncing can she?”

Castiel shrugs “I think that depends on her, someone or something is allowing her to meet these people so until she has met them all she will continue to jump, once then will it stop” You nod slightly “It’s that easy? Won’t that uh mess me up? I mean traveling that much sounds damaging?” Dean nods in agreement “Yeah I feel like that can’t be good sweetheart no offense” Castiel cocks his head at Dean “She’s been fine so far I believe she will continue to be fine, for now we should enjoy our time with her before she “jumps” again” Dean smiles and nods “Sammy, Cas how about you get a bunch of greasy cheeseburgers with the works and fries, oh and some pie! And we’ll have a party of sorts for our new friend” Winking at you again Dean smiles, Castiel chuckles and nods “Of course Dean.”

Sam nods and looks at you “You going to be alright here with my brother?” You laugh and nod “Yeah I’ll be fine” Sam laughs and looks at Castiel “Come on let’s get Romeo here some food and pie” Castiel looks at Sam confused “That is not Romeo that is Dean” Laughing softly you watch the two of them leave, glancing at Dean you sigh “I hate to ask this but I really want to take a shower and clearly I have no spare clothes with me can I borrow something?” Dean chuckles and nods “Yeah I think I have a spare flannel you can wear and maybe a shirt, otherwise Sammy has some but they might end up a dress but hey it’s something” Smiling you nod and look around the room as Dean rumages for clothes, suddenly you feel someone behind you. Turning you see Dean with a smirk on his face “Here you go sweetheart, now go shower and then we can eat”

Blushing slightly you nod and head into the shower, shutting the bathroom door you strip, turning on the shower you let the water get nice and hot. Walking under the spray you sigh happily letting the hot water relax your sore muscles washing up you grab the shampoo and lather up your hair. Feeling much better than before you shut off the water and step out, drying off you pull back on your bra and panties. Pulling on the shirt and the flannel and your pants you walk back out “Dean?” Looking up from his laptop he licks his lips and smiles “Yeah sweetheart? Feelin better, you look better, more relaxed” Laughing you walk over to him “Oh so before I looked bad? I’m kidding, I do feel better, thanks for the clothes. Sam and Castiel back yet?” Dean shakes his head, his eyes still roaming over you “Not yet sweetheart still just you and me, come on and sit with me while I do some research” Nodding you sit and look at the papers and books laying around.

My neighbor came back and took a bite out of my arm ... .My sister isn’t my sister, she’s a body snatcher…The ghost of my cat is haunting me Glancing at Dean you smirk slightly “Can we look for the ghost cat? Sounds cuddly and kind of cute” Dean laughs and watches you “I was researching for a case sweetheart but I’ll be sure to get you that ghost cat” Winking at you Dean gently pats your knee making your skin break out in goosebumps, Dean grins and looks at you “So what was the other universe like?” You blush slightly, licking your lips you smile “It was good, hard to explain but there were some enhanced people there and yeah was good” Frowning slightly you remember Bucky’s face shocked as you jumped again, Dean sees your face fall and rubs your knee gently “Hey sorry sweetheart didn’t mean to bring up anything sad” You shake your head “No offense but I wish I could have stayed there more,but I am glad I’m here uh with you and of course Sammy” Dean smirked “Oh course sweetheart” Blushing you shake your head at him “I’m serious!”

Dean laughs and smiles “Oh I believe you sweetheart I promise, so let me ask you how do you know if or when you're about to jump universes?” You look at him yawning slightly “It’s hard to describe it just feels like something is going to happen…and then I’m just somewhere else” Dean rubs your knee gently “That sounds like that would be very difficult to get used to, well I hope your with us for a while and if you do jump again I won’t stop until I find you again alright?” You nod your head, tears filling them “That means a lot to me, thanks Dean” Stroking your cheek with his thumb he winks at you “Anything for you sweetheart, I know I haven’t known you a long time but I feel like I’ve known you for a lifetime, now you’ve had a long day so how about we get some sleep and we can talk more in the morning?” 

Nodding you smile “That sounds amazing it’s actually exhausting to jump through universes” Standing you walk with Dean glancing around the bunker “Was going to ask if you wanted your own room or wouldn’t mind sharing one with me? Only because we don’t know when you’ll jump again” Laughing softly you smile up at him “Sure we can share one if you’re ok with it” Smirking at you “Sweetheart I’m sure I would like the left side if possible, plus I always sleep with a gun and its hidden under a pillow on that side. I’ll try to stay on my side promise” Looking at him mischievously you smile “I can’t promise anything but I’ll try to behave myself” Dean laughs and nods “Fair enough sweetheart, I hopefully will see you in the morning”

You nod hoping that this time you won’t jump, you slide into bed and still can’t believe that this whole thing is happening. How many more times would you jump? What universes would you go to? Would you ever be able to stick with one?” Your mind was running a mile a minute glancing at the nearby wall. You felt arms wrapping around you and pulling you close. “I can almost hear you thinking sweetheart, just get some sleep and remember I’ll find you no matter what ok?” Nodding your head you press close to him before closing your eyes.

Feeling a light in your eyes you groan loudly turning you frown “Oh no…” You manage to open an eye and realize it happened again, your heart sunk as you realized you were not in the hotel room with Dean, but where were you now?

With Mistletoe and Presents for Pretty Girls

“Ok, what else do we need?” Deeks asks, surveying the spread in front of him. There’s a meat and cheese tray (he refuses to call it a charcuterie board), fruit, desserts, a variety of snacks, and drinks.

“A kitchen sink?” Kensi suggests wryly, peering over his shoulder. A tiny hand grabs ahold of his shirt, and he turns his head, grinning up into Caleb’s round face.

“What do you think? Should we add some peanut butter and jelly, maybe some spaghetti?”

“Tootie,” Caleb whispers with a grin that shows two tiny, perfect teeth. It’s pretty much Deeks’ favorite thing ever. Sophia has an almost identical set.

“Oh, you’re totally right. We definitely need more cookies,” Deeks says, leaning in to give Caleb a smacking kiss on the cheek. “How’s everyone doing out there?”

“Great. Your mom is entertaining Kilbride with scandalous stories from her past. I’m not sure if he’s amused or horrified,” Kensi reports.

“Hey, it’s got to be better than Arkady.”

“Kady,” Caleb repeats solemnly, looking around the room expectantly.

“Otherwise, everyone has drinks and food. They seem pretty happy.”

“Are we crazy to host a Christmas party when we’ve got twin one year olds running around?” Deeks asks.

“Probably,” Kensi confirms lightly.

“Speaking of twins, where’s Soph?”

“Oh, I left her with Eric and Nell.” Deeks purses his lips at that revelation, and she quickly adds, “Don’t worry. Sam’s on standby.”

“Good. I trust them. But they also are slightly insane,” Deeks says.

Smiling, he turns, bracing his back against the counter. He settles his hands on Kensi’s hips. “Hey, did I mention that you look fantastic?” he asks, smoothing a thumb over the soft fabric of her dress.

“If you like this, wait until you see tonight’s wardrobe,” she murmurs, leaning forward to brush her nose over his. Deeks’ breath catches, and he chuckles softly.

“Can’t wait.”

“Mm.” Kensi stays pressed against him for a few more seconds until Caleb decides he wants to be included and smushes his face between them. “Ok, ok, time to rejoin the party,” she says, snatching a mini quiche off the counter and popping it in her mouth.

Together, they head out into the living room, which is at capacity with the tree, manger, and guests packed inside. Said guests are gathered in a semi-circle, their attention focused on something in the center of the room.

The reason behind that focus becomes obvious when Deeks sees Sam toss Sophia above his head, and Nell says,

“Ok, ok, enough of that. Kensi left her in my charge and I’m not gonna let anything happen to Sophie.”

“Like I’d drop her,” Sam scoffs.

“All right, quit hogging the baby,” Rountree’s voice filters through.

“Oh no, it’s my turn,” Fatima protests.

“Looks like we didn’t need to provide any entertainment after all,” Deeks drawls, watching Sophia unwittingly participate in a round of musical baby. “Small children are sufficient.”

“Just so long as we get them back at the end of the night,” Kensi comments, stretching her neck to follow Sophia’s progress around the room.

“Ca down!” Caleb requests, kicking his legs as Kensi crouches to set him down. As soon as he hits the floor, he’s off running on his chubby legs, towards his sister, and the guests.

“Caleb!” Nell shouts out, squatting and holding her arms out. He runs towards her willingly, letting her scoop him up into her arms. “I call dibs.”

“Nell, it’s not a contest,” Callen reminds her, but she ignores him in favor of taking Caleb to a clear space and spinning him in tight circles.

The next few hours are spent enjoying food and drinks while the twins keep them entertained. Everyone has brought a gift of some type as well, and soon the room is littered with little strips of wrapping paper and tissue.

“Best Christmas party we’ve ever had,” Deeks sighs. Kensi’s curled up against his side, Sophia and Caleb settled on his lap. Most of the guests have left by now, but Eric and Nell are passed out on a chair together.

“It was.” Kensi lifts her head, pressing her lips to his for a lingering kiss. “How about we open that present?”

“Now?” Deeks asks in surprise.

“Yeah, the twins are asleep,” Kensi says.

“With Eric and Nell in the house.”.

“Eric sleeps like the dead and Nell drank a lot of egg nog,” Kensi reasons. “They’re not going to be waking up for a while.”

“I don’t know…”

“C’mon let’s be risky.” Pulling away from him, Kensi gives him that look he can’t resist.

“You are a menace,” he says with a grin.

I will jump to the defense of an author whose work I don’t even like if they get a bitchy entitled comment from some jerkweed who thinks every fic should be written exactly how THEY want.

That said, in MY opinion *breathes*:

Need more of Cas being a bitch. Cas can be cool sometimes yes and sometimes he can be awkward yes but also he doesn't answer the phone, and when you call him out for ghosting you he just shrugs and says he was busy. He rolls his eyes because you're exasperating and your voice is grating. He ate his own siblings a few times and also said he wanted them all to die because they were so annoying about free will in season 6. Like yes he does little puppy dog eyes and says “sorry” but then he does that same shit again for the 12 billionth time to everyone around him. 

Need more of Dean being that guy. The "I was right about the thing and you didn't listen to me and it blew up in your face, idiot" guy. Like a lot of fics that are Dean centric seem to focus on Dean's self worth issues and his belief that no one loves him and he doesn't deserve happiness because he is a Loser and Stupid and a Weapon and is parentified which is a thing that Dean deals with feeling, but he is also THEEE most annoying hoe when he is right about something and he will NOT shut the fuck up about it. There is a lot of "Nobody will ever love me I am not smart like Sammy ;_;" and I would love to read more "I am literally the actual psychic in this family and I can sniff out how this stupid plan you came up with will fail with the accuracy of a bloodhound looking for a corpse that is just 2 feet away and I will tell you exactly how dumb you are then the universe will prove me right after you go behind my back and I WILL remind you about it at least 5 times." Yes Dean has self-worth issues but also yes Dean will endlessly shit on beings who could kill him in the blink of an eye and will tell everyone they are fucking stupid. 

Nobody can write Sam. Not you, not me, not his fans, not his haters. If, by some miracle, a person CAN write Sam accurately, then they write the best Sam ever written in the entire universe and there are galaxies exploding in your brain as you read his inner monologue... until you get to the part where Dean or Cas becomes relevant and then you immediately have to click out of the fic because this author put every single stat they have into Sam Understanding and apparently there’s are Cas Understander and Dean Understander penalties for doing that of like negative 5 trillion. Worst takes you have ever seen in your entire life. It is too painful to continue reading. Horrible crimes are being committed.

If Kevin appears in a Sam-centric fic there is a good chance the author is mean about him. 

Now that we can exclude things from search results on AO3, I need a tag called: #Everyone gets an A+ on their Mental Health Report Card after the decades of torture and/or lobotomies except Dean who is the Only Fucked Up One Because He Just Can't Manage Like Everyone Else Can And He Is Explicitly Treated As A Burden For Having Trauma Instead Of The Idea Of Him Being A Burden Being Subverted. 

Fics where Cas shows up in the fic to randomly bring dues ex machina from randomcountry and then disappear again as unobtrusively and robotically as possible "You're welcome my friends Sam and Dean Winchester beep boop" *flies away on wings ignoring canon wing loss timeline* are just????  

I notice many authors don’t care/remember when Cas does and doesn’t have certain powers in canon and he flies everywhere and it leaves me very disoriented. Like who even IS a Cas who never lost his wings? That is a different guy.

Every time someone writes "Dean finally pulls his head out of his ass" in the summary of their destiel fic a cute baby animal gets swallowed up by quicksand. 

Making Benny evil is a self-report that you don’t know how to write a friend or love interest for Dean that is better than him and that fact lives rent free in your head.

okay liz. i want to start reading cambionverse. where do i start?

HELLO AND OH MY GOD THANK YOU.......you've made this old woman's dream come true :') (i am only being a little dramatic)

i'm gonna give you a short answer and a long answer. you don't really need to read the long answer if it seems overwhelming. i get excited and overexplain things!!!

short answer:

the very first thing to read is the fic cambion. we wrote this fic first, which is why the verse is named after it. after you read cambion, you can reasonably jump in anywhere else on the series page and not be too confused, as long you don't jump to envesseled. cambion first, envesseled last. if you can just remember that, then any amount of shuffling the middle will be perfectly fine.

i have my own opinion for how to read the middle but i'm saving it for the end. please feel free to skip to it!

long answer:

this series is about jesse (half-demon kid from 5.06), ben (dean's maybe-kid from seasons 3 & 6), and claire (cas's temporary vessel in 4.20, and the daughter of his current vessel; she technically returned in s10, but "our" claire had already become her own totally different character by then), and their search for sam and dean, who have been missing for three years. cambion is jesse's fic, only human is ben's fic, and envesseled is claire's fic. but there are a lot of other fics that we wrote taking place in between them.

since we started writing this series while the end of s6 was airing, it will be helpful, but not necessary, to have passing knowledge of s6. we have plenty of exposition to fill in people who didn't watch but the added context is always nice.

ok, down to business! you know how the narnia books and star wars movies were published not chronologically? as in, stuff that happened later was published before stuff that happened earlier? @cambionverse is kinda like that. we have the jesse-ben-claire era and the sam-dean-cas era and even the ben-claire only era, and everyone will have their own preferences about which order to read it in. some options are as follows:

you can read it in the order we published it. pros: you can see things unfold in the same way we did as we went along, and the relationships will feel like they build more organically. cons: you will be going back and forth in time a lot, which may get confusing.

you can read it in chronological order. pros: you can go start to finish without skipping around too much in time. cons: it will take absolute ages to meet jesse, the star of this show. also, the first chronological fics have massive spoilers for cambion, so if you read them before you read cambion you're kind of ruining that fic for yourself, which is a huge bummer.

the character everyone gets wrong

Hot take in a show written the same way the ship of theseus was built there IS not a great way to consistently and strongly characterize our main three. There is so much contradictory information ofc I think I have pruned the weeds and know those guys are but I really find it hard to get too mad about interpretations of Sam, Dean, or Cas that I disagree with because the show is sooo wobbly and long anyway. But I do still see and feel very painfully the way they make Cas perfect or pick out the WRONG flaws to get mad at him for sometimes in fandom. But, really I can only see "clear" character profiles for side characters and I think the Gabriel fandom interpretation has to be the wildest because they killed him and then brought him back like a decade later having gotten a fandom personality graft. Hilarious. They even put a little cheeky sabriel I mean? Who else has done that?

13. worst blorboficiation

I think the prev. answer kind of goes into one of them but I'm actually going to say Dean instead. I know. I know I said there's no way to consistently blah blah blah. I contain multitudes. I think the issue stems from the show so myopically agreeing with Dean at all times that even the canon makes him something else but like. Yeah

18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...

Kevin, I guess? In my day (I am a post-s8 hop on) Kevin was everywhere. Now because he's been dead for so long obviously a lot of fic doesn't have him in it, but I miss Kevin. If we all just stopped caring about who is dead in this show we could have more fics like this GENIUS one where Kevin is back and the dynamics between him Dean, Cas, Jack, and etc are soooooo good. Oh, and per my own fan fic, Hael from 9x01 she's one of the only angels who describes herself as creating something! Angels really get whittled away to just bureaucrats and soldiers in this show but she's an indication that at least some were tasked with aesthetic and creative aims despite not being allowed to feel anything towards them and I find that FASCINATING.

22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores

Okay I went digging through my mental archives. I'm going to say something that maybe more people explore and I just don't see it a lot but I know the show forgot. Cas possessed Claire. I just personally think she should have vague memories of the moment, feeling like her head was split open and seeing from 20 different directions at once and seeing souls and feeling the flow of life all around her etc etc ya know. "I'm going out!" You called across the bunker, Dean, Cass, Sam and Jack were sitting in the library studying lore.

"Where?" Dean questioned, you were Jack's girlfriend not his daughter but he still acted like it.

"Out." You responded vaguely, you were actually going to a concert. It didn't take place till about 10 pm though and it was only 6 pm so you figured you'd explore Kansas a bit.

"Like hell!" Honestly Dean was way overprotective. You sighed, you were going tonight no matter what. It was Y/F/B and you were going to see them.

"Dean she is 18." Cas tried knowing how bad you needed to leave the bunker. You'd been cooped up for weeks now since he wouldn't let you hunt. Honestly it was stupid, you were on your first hunt when you met them for crying out loud.

"Too bad Cas." Dean quipped. You groaned.

"I've been cooped up for months! I need this Dean!" Dean gave you his resting bitch face. Sam seemed to be pointedly staying out of the argument.

"Too bad sweetheart." You groaned but knew there was no arguing with Dean when he was in this mood. You decided you wait and sneak out later.

"Fine!" You growled. Everyone looked at you shocked, it was unlike you too give up so easily.

"Fine?" Dean asked.

"Fine." You repeated you could see Cas trying to see if your ok or if something else is going on. You found a chair and sat down with your favorite book.

"What are you reading Y/N?" Jack stuck his head over you shoulder. You smiled, the Nephilim always managed to make you smile.

"I'm reading F/B." placing you book down you stood up and kissed Jack's cheek. "You want a Coke?" The Nephilim shrugged.

"Never really tried one." He admitted sheepishly. You just chuckled and handed Jack one of the bright, scarlet-red cans. He cracked his open easily but you struggled, your hands shaking slightly from nerves because of what your gonna do later. Seeing this Jack took the can and opened it for you. "Thanks Jack." You said.

"Of course Darling." Damn that boy was so sweet.

"Want to listen to some music and read a book?" You suggested smiling at your boyfriend. "I'm pretty sure you'd like Percy Jackson, there's a copy in my bag." You simply enjoyed spending time with Jack, he never judged you.

"Sure." He agree softly. You nodded and went to grab the book from your room.

"Is she ok?" Cas asked Jack confused why you were acting so strange.

"I believe so. Yes. Just sad." Jack replied just as you walked in with your phone and Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief.

Later on that night you were sleeping in you room which was right next to Jack's. It was about 9pm and you knew you'd need time to walk there. Sighing you kept to the shadows and slipped out the front door of the bunker. You made it about 200 meters before you heard a voice behind you.

"Why'd you leave the bunker? What are doing? Can I join you?" You let out the breath you were holding, it was only Jack. You silently laughed at yourself, you were scared by Jack of all people.

"I'm going to a concert, the same band we were listening to on my phone. Dean wouldn't let me leave so I snuck out. Sure you join me Jack, it's after dark and what better company then a Nephilim." You smiled and grabbed Jack's hand pulling him with you.

"Where is it? I can just fly us there." You were going to walk but he seemed so proud, you knew he'd only recently learnt how to teleport more than just himself.

"Sure. It's about 2 miles that way." You pointed to the road and Jack nodded. Jack nodded and pulled you too him, next thing you knew you were slightly green and the two of you were just out side the concert.

Knowing he'd never been to a concert before you began explaining things to Jack. You pointed to a booth on your left, "That's were you by tickets." As we walked over you pointed to the stage, "that's where the singers are, I like sitting further back as it gets loud."

You walked to the cashier. "Tickets for 2 please." He nodded.

You handed the man $200, ticket plus tip. "Why did you give them extra money?" Jack asked, you should've known he wouldn't know what tipping is.

"It's called tipping, they take the extra money for themselves. Some jobs don't pay very well Jack." You did your best to explain but obviously didn't get your point across quite right.

After the concert you glanced at Jack "Did you have fun?" you asked curious. He was beaming from ear to ear.

"Very much, thankyou." Jack replied obvious joy in his voice. "I'll take us home now." You nodded my smile just as large. Taking Jack's hand you were suddenly back in the bunker, it didn't effect you as much as earlier.

After a few seconds you realized the lights were on.

"Balls!" You grumbled. You should've known this'd happen as it was as it was about 2am.

"Y/N!" Dean came into the library fuming. You glanced at Jack. "Jack?" He asked almost disbelieving he was in on this.

You and Jack looked at each other. "Uh oh." You murmured in unison.

"Run." You whispered, Jack nodded and you took off in opposite directions.

"You have got to be kidding!" you heard Dean yell, let's just say you didn't dare stop.

“Yo  a ti, Cas” Or how mexican dubbing gripped us tight and raised us from Despair.

Ok. So I promised a big meta about the dubbing thing and so while I don’t have all the answers YET, here’s a bit of perspective on the differences between Despair and The Truth.

  First, a little background. I am a former professional dubbing translator. While I worked on anime series from Japanese to Spanish, rather than in live action ones from English to Spanish, the process is not that different. Also, I worked in Mexico, where Supernatural is dubbed, so that’s why I can make the assumptions I make. Finally, my specialization in college was translation from English to Spanish, so I guess I know what the hell I’m talking about.

  So let’s start on HOW you translate something for a dub. Back in the day, you got a ton of VHS tapes with the episodes on them with time codes, and, if you were lucky, a shooting script. This is to say, it was not a transcript of the actual words said in the episode, but the script BEFORE the actors, directors, and everyone else had a hand on what was said and changed. And thus, anything adlibbed? Is not going to be in that script which, at least for the anime side of things? Was a nightmare as the script was usually “And here X actor can say whatever they want” and I had to go and listen to the scene ten thousand times. Now a days, you get either a video file or a streaming link, and sometimes, the shooting script. If you get a script, btw, you can also not get a script in the original language. I know that the person who had to translate Sprited Away to Spanish was working off a German script, not the Japanese one. So yeah, some things can be lost in translation there.

  THEN you get to translate. BUT you can’t just translate word by word. You have to adapt it so that it will sound like something a person will say, and sometimes, literally is not the way to do it. And in particular, Mexican dubbing has a reputation to uphold as the “Neutral” dub that is send to most Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America, so we can’t use certain words (I don’t have the list at hand, but I remember that I couldn’t use “Llanta” for Tire, and so I had to use “Neumatico”. And no “sweaters” or “hotcakes” or stuff like that), AND we have to match the lips of the original video. Which is like, the worst nightmare ever because of what we call “labiales”, that is to say, the letters where lips close.

  I can’t tell you how much we all loved when a character gave a long winded speech with their back to the camera due to those damned closed lip letters.

  All this is to say that sometimes, the line could be “We are all in this together for good or bad”, and the translation become something more like “Estamos en esto, por las buenas o las malas” (We’re on this, the good way or the bad way) or “Estamos juntos en las buenas y en las malas” (We’re together in the good and the bad), depending on the translator, dub director, and voice actor.

  Depending on the client, that is, the original owner of the series, sometimes they will review the translation once it’s all dubbed and edited. I know that in the Avengers movie, a Disney rep was present on the cabin and forbade any changes from the script, which resulted on a couple of awkward lines in the end result. I don’t know if that’s the case for Supernatural, but I honestly doubt it. Still, translators can’t make huge changes for the dialogue. One couldn’t just ADD a relationship that wasn’t there, no matter what.

  (As an aside, due to the very conservative mindset of some tv stations, it’s more common that gay relationships become more ambiguous, by changing “I love you” to “Te quiero” which can be more of a filial love than a romantic one. And well, that one case in Sailor Moon where a gay character was changed into a woman because the dub director honestly thought the character was a woman. But that was in the nineties)

  Now, let’s go to how Castiel’s speech was translated.

  The original, according to Superwiki, went like this:

  Castiel:  You're the most caring man on Earth. You are the most selfless, loving human being I will ever know. You know, ever since we met, ever since I pulled you out of Hell, knowing you has changed me. Because you cared, I cared. I cared about you. I cared about Sam. I cared about Jack. I cared about the whole world because of you. You changed me, Dean.

Dean: Why does this sound like a goodbye? Castiel: Because it is. I love you. Dean: Don't do this, Cas. Cas.

  And the translation, as it was aired, went like this (And people, you have no idea the war flashbacks transcribing this gave me, so I hope you appreciate it):

  Castiel: Eres el hombre mas amoroso sobre la Tierra. Un hombre sin egoismo; el hombre mas generoso que haya visto, y que jamas vere. Sabes que desde que nos conocimos y desde que te saque del infierno, el conocerte me ha cambiado. Porque a ti te importa. Y a mi me importa. Me importas tu. Y me importa Sam, me importa Jack, me importa todo el mundo. Y fue por ti. Tu me cambiaste, Dean.

  Dean: Porque suena esto a despedida?

  Castiel: Porque asi fue. Te amo.

  Dean: Yo a ti, Cas. (The empty appears and Billie opens the door) Cas…

  Castiel: Adios Dean

  Dean: No!

  Ok. So… At first glance, they’re pretty much the same until we get to the I love you. BUT let’s dissect it a little bit.

  Cas begins with a “Eres el hombre mas amoroso sobre la Tierra” which is not how I would’ve translated “The most caring man on Earth” since “caring” is more like “Cariñoso” rather than “amoroso” which would be “loving”, and yes, there’s a difference. Plus, “el hombre mas amoroso” sounds a bit clunky, so Personally, I’d have gone with “Eres el hombre mas cariñoso en la Tierra”, that would’ve given us more time for the rest of the speech, but I wonder if the translator choice for Amoroso instead was more due to the fact that “amor” (love) is more clearly romantic than “care” (cariño, in a sense, more on this later) and so it foreshadows the end.

  Again, with the literal clunkyness we have “Un hombre sin egoismo” (A man without egoism) which sounds weird no matter what language you speak, and it should’ve been “Un hombre dadivoso” (A giving man) or “un hombre desinteresado” (a selfless man) although the second could be mis-construed as “a man without interests” so “dadivoso” would’ve better. But the more puzzling is that the Spanish separates the selfless man from the next, which is REALLY confusing as the English is “the most loving man”, which would be “el hombre mas amoroso” making it quite redundant, so the Spanish changes it to “the most generous man”, “el hombre mas generoso”. To add to this, Cas continues with “that I have seen and I will ever see” instead of “That I know”, because it’s far more poetic. And loving.

  So yeah, Mexican Cas is basically saying that Dean Winchester is made of love and puppies.

  Ahem.

  The next part “You know, ever since I pulled you out of hell, you’ve changed me” is more or less word for word, and the only thing that changes is that the English sounds more like a question and the Spanish one is an affirmation. YOU KNOW that ever since I pulled you out of hell, you changed me.” Little verb tense play, that doesn't change much except Cas’s resolution to say what he has to say.

  And then we get to the part that made me squeal out loud. Because we go from

  “Because you cared, I cared. I cared about you. I cared about Sam. I cared about Jack. I cared about the whole world because of you”

  To

  “Porque a ti te importa. Y a mi me importa. Me importas tu. Y me importa Sam, me importa Jack, me importa todo el mundo.” Which at first glance is the same, but NOPE.

  First change: The original is in past tense “I cared”. Spanish version is in present tense: “I care”.

Which is a little non important thing except when you remember that simple present means “immutable absolute truth that won’t change with time”

  Second, the choice of word for care.

  I mentioned before that Care can be Cariño, as in filial, non romantic love (Or romantic love pet name, as it can also be Darling. It’s one of THOSE words). Other translations for care include “cuidado” (as in attention, concern, keeping, and worry), and of course “interesarse” (Which also can be care), “preocuparse” (care, bother, trouble, mind, fuss), and yes, “importar” but “importar” ONLY translates to English as a verb as “import”, “matter” “amount to” and notice how none of those words include “love”.

  Mexican Cas is not saying “you love the world, and so I do”. Mexican Cas is saying “The world matters to you, and thus it matters to me, but my feelings for the World (and Sam, and Jack) are not in the same league as my feelings for you.”

  And then Dean asks “Why does this sound like a Goodbye”, just like in English, in present tense…

  And Mexican Cas replies in PAST tense. “Porque asi fue”. And THIS is important because it means that everything he said before WAS the goodbye, and not what comes next. All the rest? Is in the past. “Because it was”. Not “Because it IS”. And the next part? Is their future.

  I love you.

  Te amo.

  Simple present. No ambiguity like “te quiero”. Spanish Te amo is for romantic love. Not brotherly, not family, not bro-mantic. ROMANTIC.

  It’s like “I’m IN love with you” (Although that’d be “Estoy enamorado de ti” and I doubt that would’ve fit in the time Misha spoke)

  And of course, the answer. “Yo a ti, Cas”. Not “And I, you” as I’ve seen it before (And I also thought it was, until transcribing the scene) but a simple “I, you, Cas.” Which ok, pretty cave-speak, but the meaning is pretty clear. Dean Winchester loves his gay angel.

  It is also telling that the empty doesn’t appear until AFTER Dean confessed, so no, Mexican Cas is not “happy with the saying”, he had to get to the “happy with the having”.

  And when Billy appears, it does seem as if he wants to say something more, but Cas is a love-sick selfsacrificing dumbass and so we all get our hearts broken.

I did get in contact with Dean Winchester’s mexican voice actor, and am waiting for answers to a small interview I did with him which includes the question “did that And I you, Cas” was in the script, and am trying to contact Castiel’s mexican voice actor. So I will be updating you on that. But I hope this clears up some of the questions about how Mexican dubbing made Destiel Canon :D
