THIS IS KILLING ME.

I picked up tbhk in 2021 thinking it was a silly monster of the week style supernatural comedy. Oh my god, how AidaIro has tricked me. I should have turned back before I got too invested, but tbhk is a part of me now, I think I’d die without it.

IVE BEEN SOBBING FOR THE PAST TEN MINUTES AT MIDNIGHT OVER CHAPTER 120!

Spoiler warning for chapter 120 (read it if you haven’t already and suffer with me):

After chapter 119, this world’s Kou and Mitsuba were basically killed in the red house, once again proving that those two can literally never be happy. When Kou said he’d die for Mitsuba in that one chapter, I don’t think this is what he meant.

But when he says he can’t help them go back, I can’t figure out if he’s talking about Mitsuba or the fact that he’s stuck in the red house. Probably both, as he says something later which implies he’s talking about Mitsuba.

Mostly the red house though, as shown in these panels. Which hit me really hard for some reason.

I started sobbing when I saw these panels though,

Just look at his face, there’s something about the shading and detail in his face which captivates you. Watching the one character who is so fixated on trying to have everyone live die was so heart wrenching.

The parallel between this panel and chapter 118 is killing me. In that chapter, Mitsuba and Kou talk about their bad dreams, ones of the old world where Mitsuba is dead. They don’t want to accept that any of those dreams could be real, promising to each other to live their lives to the fullest, only accepting the dreams as real if they failed to forget.

In this chapter, Mitsuba and Kou were never able to live a life where they could ignore those dreams, almost immediately getting killed. So to Kou, he now had to accept those dreams, with their new reality becoming the bad dream he tells Nene to forget.

This panel also killed me.

He’s clearly talking about Mitsuba, who else could he be talking about. Again showing just how much he means to him. Again, it reminds me of the chapter where Kou talks about dying for Mitsuba, showing that he’ll always be there for him, even in death.

I also want to just talk about poor Nene, look at this panel:

This is the second time that one of her only living friends has had some connection with death, but this is the first time one has straight up disappeared before her eyes. This whole ark has Nene being tormented by death and loss and I hate it.

I wanna touch on Teru quickly. I’ve never loved characters with his type of personality before, but I think this ark has completely changed my mind about him. First, there was that face he made talking about his mother being alive, and then him being forced to exorcise his own brother. Which must have been devastating to Teru, considering that his whole motive is to protect his family, the two he has left. I think this is some of the most emotional we’ve seen in Teru. And I’m crying again

I spent like 30 minutes at midnight typing this out because once again AidaIro has delivered a heartbreaking chapter, and I need to talk about it.

Oh my god, I was so busy crying yesterday I didn’t realize his and Mitsuba’s corpses were in the well.

who else is fucked up about the new tbhk arc and chapter 114 like. atp i need aidairo to write out this other timeline as its separate story and have both timelines be canon bc. Oh my god can you imagine Teru and especially Kou returning to the original timeline, and just. Being aware of what they lost. Being more aware than ever of what could have been. Except unlike picture perfect, this life was real, and they had to lose their loved ones again. They had to experience exactly what they were about to be forced into giving up, which is something they've also craved after experiencing such loss in their original timeline, which makes this loss hit even harder. We know aidairo loves angst, so like, I really really don't think they're all gonna forget everything once they return to the og timeline. Which means they can't un-experience the love that is now absent in their own world - their perfect world, their perfect relationships, it's all going to leave an exit wound, a void they can't ever fill once they return home. I thikn im going to throw up

A longer, more in depth (9 parts all in one) terukane analysis, and/or everything i could find, compiled (one of my better pieces of work imo) ⭐️

Ok so it might be the fact that i ship them so i see a lot of things they do as possibly romantic even when theres no romantic implications, but the amount of times it feels like AidaIro seems to be implying that teru likes akane is getting to a suspiciously high number. Like lets look at this from a non-shipper’s pov (or at least try😭)

Item A: teru looking at akane

Without the context that he’s looking at akane, he genuinely looks like he’s showing something of raw emotion, unchanged by his “fake persona” but a genuine reaction. Looking at this picture at face value one would assume he’s big time crushing. I mean i wouldn’t say “omg hes so in lovveee!!!” But considering he doesn’t really open up to like anyone, i think this is definitely something??

Item B: them going together on a romantic outing

Yes i did make it sound much more compelling then it actually is but cmon man. The school festival is considered a “romantic event” and these two spent the entire time hanging around the school together. Giving the excuse that "it's our job being in the student council" (which i guess it is) but in reality it was because no one wanted to come with them.

Which i mean they also did technically go on an actual date together

Item C: teru trusting akane more than anyone (?)

Teru likes talking to akane, trusts his intellect, and considers him someone he can rely on but doesn't like it when his whole world starts to revolve around aoi. My guy, that's jealousy.

He is shown to trust him and even show his back to him in multiple instances, knowing he wont hurt him, and he’s someone he can trust (lets ignore what happens on the literal next page)

Even being one of those “i fight alone” type of people. But when akane’s there, he’s never fighting alone.

Item D: not sure if thats whats happening here but im pretty sure he tried glazing akane even blushing n shit like ‘oh no mr judge im not guilty🥺💄💋’

Item E: akane knows teru better than we think

When kou and teru were fighting, the reason teru even walked out in the first place was because of the fireworks. And whos idea was that?

Akane’s. He knew he liked fireworks and that they’d lure him out of his room. And again, he was right they did it fact get him to leave

Item F: valentines day event

i dont think i even need to break this one down. Its a picture of JUST them TOGETHER posted on VALENTINES DAY. 2/14/24. THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY THAT CELEBRATES NONE OTHER THAN ROMANTIC LOVE. Also teru’s color being used as akane’s sparkles and akane’s color being used as teru’s sparkles kinda shows that AidaIro arent just showing us two characters, they’re showing us TERU and AKANE, TOGETHER. If it really could be anyone im sure they’d put them in a general setting, but with the paired colors i’d say that says otherwise. Some might say they’re looking at eachother

Item G: possible fruit symbolism

first off, this picture.

First lets look at hanako’s. We can see he has two drinks, both red + with strawberries, along with a red straw. While also being pictured near other red fruits.

In this picture, nene’s flower(s) are literally strawberry flowers, putting the association between strawberries + nene out there. Meaning the strawberries in his drink could be purposeful, along with the red undertones. (red being her eye color) (sorry for quality im on iPhone)

Moving on to teru’s, he has one drink, being yellow-ish with pineapple on the side, and chunks in the drink itself. Whilst his straw is orange, while also being pictured around a ginormous pinapple

And this isnt the first time we’ve seen him pictured with pineapples

This god awful picture unfortunately exists so im adding it as proof/evidence for my argument. (Oh and not to mention akane has green pants on so everyone’s a lil funky igs)

notice how as soon they got to his house his outfit changed? This is him when they got to his house (clearly in a long-sleeve shirt, not the hoodie)

All within the same chapter i think, but him changing outfits i feel like says something. Like we’re supposed to associate that with something other than aoi (them talking ab how to save her at his house) or his family. Like aidairo are shoving it in your face ‘disassociate teru w aoi!!!’ He even straight up left when they started talking ab how they missed aoi at the karaoke place. (More or so when he left they started talking but ykwim) Since nene is being associated with strawberries it leaves the only other person to be akane, this also making sense also because of the straw color. (The straw being orange; akane’s rep color being orange, as nene’s is red)

also the fact that fruit is literally associated with the queer community

In the “kiss comic” part of the art book, not only are teru and akane’s on the same page, but they also look like they go together

Thoughts on TBHK Chapter 122

The new Chapter of TBHK is out and Omg aidairo not only blessed us with one but 2 Cover cards this time, and they look absolutely effing beautiful OMG 😖 Oh yeah baby I can't wait to see what they have in store for us today, so without further ado LET'S F*CKING GO!

Bro I effing love this guy, like he knows what to say in certain situations and knows how to care and comfort a person so well that it just make my heart melt, like you can tell adult hanako learned that from him when yashiro saw his future self in the previous chapters and in chapter 113, ahh my heart >_< (Also I'm glad that we finally got conformation that TBHK takes place in highschool because for the longest I was confused on whether it took place in middle or highschool)

I love how despite EVERYTHING, yashiro has no resentment towards this Hanako because she KNOWS it's not him and doesn't define it as hanako but rather HIM or that THING, god I love her character development so much

Tsuchimori is a effing GOAT, I loved how he used hanako's old tricks as a way to basically encourage yashiro and then this whole scene with hanako and Tsuchimori was just icing on the cake, Aidairo you're an effing amazing writer ^w^

AHHHHHH my Sacrifice theory is coming True OMG I can't wait! Bruh I'm loving that people are FINALLY understanding what an absolute BANGER this series is and that it finally got it's 2nd season, bruh I love tbhk so much I don't want it to end but I KNOW it will and when it does, I can't wait to not only thank aidairo for this amazing series but also look forward to what they do next, bruh this chapter was so GOOD, totally can't wait for the next one >_<

Mitsukou Analysis, Picture Perfect Part 1

Hello! I know, it’s been a while since I did one of these. Honestly though, I was kind of putting this analysis off, Picture Perfect is just such a beautiful arc, and I’m scared I won’t do Aidairo’s characters justice. Plus, it’s hella long.

I’m sure you’ve noticed the “Part 1” in the title. This is because I wrote this on a bus, and had very, very little time to make this analysis. I promise, I’m making Part 2 as fast as I can.

Now that that’s been settled, let’s do this!

Kou, do you realize how gay that sounds? Like, that’s not what straight guys say to their best friends. Jokes aside, we can see hints of Kou’s… jealousy? I don’t know what to call it. We can see Kou is not happy with idea Tsukasa can make Mitsuba’s wish come true.

Why? Because, say it with me people, Kou needs to be needed. Seriously, this aspect of his character is the reason of half of the things he does and says to Mitsuba.

So. We’re to the point Nene and Kou know this world is fake, and are attempting to get information out of Mitsuba so they have a better sense of their surroundings.

Why does Mitsuba listen to Nene and not Kou?

Actually, this puzzles me too. Seriously, anybody have ideas? Maybe it’s because Mitsuba saw everything that happened in the school, so he saw Nene’s shortened lifespan?

On that note, time to move onto one of the most critical scenes in MitsuKou’s arc.

Mitsuba says it himself. He saw everything. Does that mean he saw Kou crying over his “death”? I imagine it would have had a huge impact on his psychology. I’ll come back to this in Part 2.

In these panels, Mitsuba is referring to how he wants people to react when he calls out to them. He wants friends. It must be horrible, being a ghost, bound to the school, never able to communicate or make an impact.

Maybe Kou is special to him, and maybe it’s because of this. So, at this point in time, Mitsukou is not looking good. Like in a, “is this a healthy relationship?” aspect. Their entire relationship is built upon a, truthfully, unhealthy codependency.

Mitsuba needs to be seen, and Kou needs somebody to rely on him.

This interaction poses an interesting question. If Kou had to pick between Mitsuba (No. 3) or Original Mitsuba, which would he choose? I don’t think even Kou himself knows, look at his expression.

However, the look on his face could be described as regretful, so perhaps, the answer to this question would be Original Mitsuba. I think Mitsuba notices Kou’s appearance, and came to the same conclusion.

See, even Kou is doubting himself. My heart goes out to Mitsuba. Imagine meeting the only person who you regularly talk to, the closest thing to a friend you have. (I don’t think the Broadcasting Club counts.)

And you realize the only reason he likes you is because you have the same face and personality of a guy he liked. (No, not like liked.)

He is literally merely seeing the ghost of a friend in you.

I'm glad I played AidaIro's Snow White game because... Estelio is THIS HURTFUL to Rasphard, and it's just out of a sense of being rejected!!! Estelio would kick his twin's goddamn corpse on the ground, let him wriggle and DIE in pain and AGONY if Estelio has the impression Rasphard wants nothing to do with him or isn't considering him ... LOL. Iro likes this kind of ... troubled, insecure, desperate, spiteful, needy person... you want the perfect brother, who loves you. You have that, but you can't understand the idea of someone choosing to leave you through death....

I wonder if Tsukasa started grabbing your jacket to move you to protect you.... meanwhile, Amane impulsively moved to protect his ~~~fake otouto, haha!

I wonder ... if Nene-chan has her memories because, she is magical etc, or if Akane actively made Teru do something to her to enable her to... stay as an aware asset, since he isn't completely sided with the Clockkeepers... maybe Akane is waiting to see what 'new future' comes to be, and seeding a few tricks to utilize if he doesn't agree or wishes to pull out? (I mean, if the Severance never happened, Aoi definitely would not be his girlfriend haha)...

The clockeeper's circumstance is interesting enough. Its very Aidairo-core. But not enough for me to talk about haha.

if we're 'fixing' the 'problem', I wonder if that means we'll be going into the original timeline, where Amane would likely still be alive-- he'd just be an old man, and Nene-chan's teacher at Kamome. Wouldn't that be so funny and interesting? Lol. What would we all do if Amane was "Yugi-sensei" and like, old! It would be very AidaIro core AHAHAH ahhh the agegap fetish--! It's not enough to have Sumire x Hakubo and Yako x Misaki and Kako x Mirai and the entire Monstery Nursery AUs LOL you know, we need more ahahahaah (HanaNene is already technically biiig agegap! I would laugh if actually making Amane like 60 woke some people up flfjdklfdjk)

I'm just not sure... Amane could just be dead, I guess, and Tsukasa. Or he could be alive, and old. I have a vague theory that he must be a kaii because of, whatever he or Tsukasa had done together during the shinjuu... (maybe Amane was impulsed to eat some part of Tsukasa, maybe the God blessed Amane at the last second, etc etc)... it's hard to imagine Amane would be a school mystery-- Tsukasa is his yorishiro after all... and we don't quite know what circumstances make Sumire and Tsukasa into objects, if being sacrificed to the God had something essential to do with that...

Well, so interesting, I wonder if Nene-chan will have to go even further than she did in Picture Perfect-- in that arc, she had to choose to reject a seemingly perfect, but ultimately fabricated, world; even if it was 'nicer' than the 'real world'. Now, she might be shown a world fixed of its cracks-- it could even possibly be a world Amane never had to murder his brother, like she wanted before. Nene-chan is so often getting "what she asked for" in the wrong way, at the wrong time. She fell in love with "Hanako". Is the boy she fell in love with "here"? Is he in a form she can confess to?

Furthermore, she just bonded with Tsukasa, and has knowledge of the Red House... must be essential, to write that happening before this-- just before, even. Tsukasa even inspired her to need to free herself, even if Amane isn't there to save her.

Poor Nene-chan though-- so scary!!! What an awful situation to be in HAHAHA, flung around...

I have no idea what Mitsuba's situation will be, but Tsukasa is responsible for our "Mitsuba" to even be around. He wouldn't have even managed to become the ghost about the entryway without Tsukasa kaii-ifying him through his first, vague wish.

Well, it would be funny if these things were all true now:

-Amane is alive, but he's old lol -Aoi is not Akane's gf, and maybe that other timeline was the only goddamn way you could ever get her within reach lol -No Mitsuba To Speak Of lol

The truth is that I have always believed that Nene is going to die in the end because there are many things that point to that, if it happens I think it will be one of the strongest things that we will see in the manga, AidaIro is dramatic and crude, Nene is the most human character, that is why she is considered less important but her importance is really extremely great, she is one of the pillars of the story, so seeing her die she will be very strong.

Especially how everyone who knows her will take it, she wins the affection of people easily, she has interacted with the most misunderstood teenagers, she saw the pains, desires and regrets of the specters, they have liked her, Hanako is in love with her, you could say that she is a friend of Mitsuba, she was a friend of Sumire, Shijima-San supports her along with Tsuchigomori, even Yako, a constantly furious being, likes being with her and Tsukasa approve her, I asked me how she will get along with the mysteries No.1

Yashiro is the protagonist and it's no surprise. She is the most important piece in the story. Without her, Hanako would remain alone, Tsukasa would not return, the seals would not be removed, lives would not be saved, Kou would not know Mitsuba, because if there is no Tsukasa, there is no Mitsuba. The fate of the twins would not have been changed.

It suggests that the twins were waiting for her arrival to begin their goal, and of course, these goals have consequences, whether good or bad. In any case, the twins could only move forward with her. Tsukasa didn't kidnap her for nothing, he needs her too.

Yashiro was narratively constructed to seem weak and useless, a little girl who was naive and got involved with the supernatural, but that's not what it's about. She is one of the key players, and if you analyze everything she did, it had a consequence. She prevented Kou from exorcising Hanako, he started to want to better understand supernaturals.

Hanako is no longer as cold as before, I could mention all the changes in his behavior but I would spend the whole day. She saved Aoi several times (even without Aoi knowing), she showed Sumire what freedom was (when she took her from that village) wow, if I'm going to say everything this post will be just for that hahaha.

Nene's death is destined, so there is no way to save her unless specific methods are used to do so. They can use Tsuchigomori or the god. In both cases a sacrifice is necessary. In the case of Tsuchigomori he would sacrifice himself, and in God's case, they would need to remove all the seals.

There is a third alternative, going back in time. In the latter, there are some possibilities for her to be kept alive, either by stopping her time, or going back in time to change something, or in the last resort, going to the future to prevent her from going through the event that will bring about her death. .

Apparently, Hanako is thinking about the possibility of using the time to their advantage.

About what her death would be like, I have a theory about it, if you want to see it, take a look at this post here.

I'm going to summarize the post I mentioned above, basically they need to remove all the seals, after these seals are removed something will happen (the last cursed seal will break) imagining that the cursed seal is Hanako's, which is the only one that has a seal and isn't a yorishiro, so we assume Hanako is going to transform into something dangerous.

Yashiro manages to purify, and you see that when she does this to Tsukasa, he "melts" a little. On other occasions, such as in the mokke of the dead chapter, she purifies all the students at once.

So I imagine that she will try to save Hanako, but he, who has no control over himself, will end up killing her in the process (like he did with Tsukasa), she will manage to save him, but when he realizes what he did , will ask Kou to exorcise him.

I explain better in the post I mentioned.

The second hypothesis is that it is used as a sacrifice to the God, to grant a wish. Although the Kannagis don't actually die, they are trapped in the house/abyss. Yashiro actually dies, so I wonder if this hypothesis is so valid.

We saw how her body became lifeless and there were no signs that her soul would be present at the place, or the fact that she didn't remember anything after Mirai advanced her time, that is, she won't be trapped anywhere like the kannagis stay. Tsukasa was also sacrificed, but he remains in the house, meaning Yashiro actually dies, there is no return for her.

The ways that Hanako found to save her included locking her in a safe place, where nothing bad could happen to her, that is, while she was there, no supernatural would attack her or there would be no way to get her out of there to use her as a sacrifice. She also wouldn't risk her life trying to save Hanako, because she would be with Amane from the PP arc.

He made a wish to God and asked for her life span to increase, that is, he changed her destiny when he made her live longer than was intended. So even if she was in danger, she wouldn't die. Remembering that Hanako removed her from the supernatural world, Aoi's sacrifice closed all the doors, meaning she wouldn't be there if Hanako transformed and attacked her.

We're still going to see more of his attempts to save her, and I believe that in this current arc we will too.

Nene's death will mainly affect Hanako, and if Hanako loses control… That will be problematic.....

Hanako is dead. I mean: DEAD. Like for real. Like no spirit or whatsoever. (Also TERU AND KOU'S MOTHER IS ALIVE OH MY GOD, EVEN IF I EXPECTED IT, OH MY DOG.)

Or to the moment Tsukasa went straight to the cursed pit of their house when they were like... 5(?) years old to save Amane because he was dying of... some 1960 illness I don't know. He was pretty ill all the time. (My baby, you never have a rest, eh. I don't know what God is doing right now, but doing a good job is not on the list.) So if Tsukasa never met the THING and made a deal with it to save his brother, Amane could have died in the end, #killme :((((((

Anyways, what do you think? Are the other kids like number 3 gone for sure too? Pffft, my poor girl T.T The thing with number 6 never happened so he is still wandering in the other side not remembering a shit again? Will Aoi-chan (seriously, why these two have to be called the same? AidaIro what were you thinking, this is so confusing???) remember the other timeline/correct timeline?

I think it could be smarter if they stopped the THING to come over to little Tsukasa in the first place. Or are they going to let Amane kill him and let them be, nah.

Or at least to stop Tsukasa to come back to Amane when they were little. So that way Amane would be alive (and traumatized for life anyway because his brother dissapeared) and their parents... too... Leave me alone, I'm sad.

I think this last one possibility is the most reasonable since the three girls who did the ouija thing/ceremony in class (there is no better place to do this sh*t? What is going on in Japan's schools anyway??) talked to some spirit called Tsukasa. And then one of them dissapeared, like, yeah. F*ck. Try again. (Even when they knew some other girl did this sh*t in the past and they never saw her again. Jezz, you were asking for it!!!)

Maybe Hanako saved everyone when he killed his brother and make himself one of the protectors of the school because WOW, you let this kids by themselves for a second and they are already dying like flies!!!

And I still think Yashiro is going to die either even if they changed this timeline, sorry not sorry, my girl will survive of course. But this present is so fake. Hanako wil try to find her to save her.

Having finished Dusk Maiden I’m really doubling down on the hanako-kun parallels I’m really curious when you get around to watching whether the main trio will remind you as much of Teiichi, Yuuko and Kirie only genderbent as they did to me.

I just tore through Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun's first season this week and am starting in on the After-school Hanako-kun shorts now. And I can definitely see what you mean about the three main leads sharing similar types!

But first, Full Disclosure: I actually thought Hanako-kun was going to be about KIDS. Like... pre-teen kids. The classic "Hanako-san" story is usually portrayed as involving a girl between 10-13 years old, and the characters in Hanako-kun just look so much like children at first glance, y'know? So I was definitely surprised to watch the show and learn they're in high school! Turns out it's just a cutesy design choice. :P

Nene here is 15 years old. But if you told me you thought she was 8? I'd believe you.

ANYWAY. I want to take a moment to talk about where I see the similarities and differences.

Similarities:

To start with: Both stories focus on a group of teeenage characters investigating and/or combatting ghostly school mysteries that're usually framed as the "Seven Wonders of the School." (Every Japanese school has to have its Seven Wonders, y'know. :P I've lost track of how many times the "Seven Wonders of the School" trope has appeared in manga/anime/visual novels/etc that I've consumed... ) There's also the fact that, tonally, both stories also bounce between comedic group interactions and the creepy horror aspects of what the characters are facing.

But you were particularly honing in on the character similarities! And I agree that that's the area that makes them most reminiscient of each other. It's worth noting that Dusk Maiden of Amnesia has a quartet of primary players, whereas Hanako-kun only has three. However, if we exclude DMoA's Momoe (who I'd argue is the least important of the Dusk Maiden quartet), then both stories contain the following three chararacter "types" among their main characters:

Dim-Bulb "Every(wo)man" Lead Protagonist (many in-universe members of the opposite sex will crush on this character over the course of the series... for whatever reason)

Mischievious Ghost with a Secret Past (a.k.a. the actual reason we're watching/reading this thing, CLEARLY)

Exorcist from a Spiritual Family Line (they show recurring skepticism about the ghost's seemingly benign nature, repeatedly threatening to exorcise him/her even as they gradually come to befriend him/her)

It's that last one that's particularly interesting to me. If you're going to do a story about a ghost lurking in a school and his/her connection to a living student attending that schoool, it's easy to imagine those first two types/tropes coming to mind quite quickly and naturally. The third one is a little more of a stretch, though. It's not impossible for it to be a case of "independent invention," but... it does make me wonder if the authorial team called "AidaIro" was directly influenced by the work of team "Maybe" on DMoA.

Differences:

Ultimately, though, I think both stories are different enough from one another to make them stand uniquely in my mind.

— The most obvious distinction is that Dusk Maiden is very much focused on the love story between a ghost and a human — I'd argue that's one of its primary appeals! Meanwhile, Hanako-kun is sometimes billed a "romantic comedy," but I don't know where the romance is supposed to be. :P Honestly, the first episode of the anime made me think (with horror), "Oh god, they're now CURSED to fall in love! Free will is dead!" but uh... I do know that by the first 75 chapters of the manga, they still haven't shown any signs of being into each other? So 1) If anything is happening between Nene and Hanako, it is a SLOW-ass burn and 2) If they ever DO get together, I hope they manage to sever this whole forced-bond thing first so it can feel more legit :P

— That's another thing: Dusk Maiden is a complete story right now in both its versions/formats! Meanwhile, Hanako-kun is still DEEPLY ongoing. The manga has no end in sight, and although the anime JUST got a second season announcement, it didn't even come with a vague release window.

— Out of the three shared "character types" I mentioned above, the "Dim-Bulb Protagonist" is probably the most distinct character between the two stories. DMoA's Teiichi is more of an innocent — the open-minded and pure-hearted type who just wears his heart on his sleeve. He's pretty chill but kind of unmemorable, yet somehow attracts his own mini-harem? Luckily, he's 100% committed to his ghost waifu. TBHK's Nene Yashiro is, by contrast, a borderline genki girl who is super boy-crazy and regularly on the verge of a mental spiral. (Actually, I think Nene acts more like Momoe than she does Teiichi... ?) But when our story starts, Nene is already bolder/braver and more ready to take action than either Teiichi OR Momoe are for the majority of DMoA. She... ALSO attracts her own mini-harem, but she's too self-conscious about her legs to even notice.

— Also: Whereas Dusk Maiden goes MUCH darker with its horror aspects than Hanako-kun ever would, Hanako-kun also features far more of your typical shōnen action elements than you'll ever find in Dusk Maiden.

.............you get the idea.

I do enjoy Hanako-kun! I especially grew to appreciate its cuter character designs; they make it imposible for us to wind up with those borderline-ecchi moments that DMoA sometimes has, and I consider that a good thing. :P However, I ultimately still prefer DMoA because of that central relationship... naturally.

oh my god guys ask me about my magical girl designs and i will go insane i will type up a whole essay. i'll talk about kyrie cause i like her a lot

here's the design! so she drowned (or rather, was drowned by someone else) at 16 after being stalked for a couple months and eventually kidnapped. not exactly the lightest story, but bc it was so traumatic her brain erased the memories, and she doesn't find out the real cause of death until much later in the story, when kye comes across a guy who lived in kyrie's town and gets the full story.

her outfit is themed after ophelia for. obvious reasons. i looked up paintings/common interpretations of ophelia and found that she was commonly depicted in a white and gold dress with reddish-brown hair half up. oh, and flowers. so i ran with that. the white streaks in her hair were actually not part of the initial plan, but when i was using the bucket tool it left blank streaks and i just thought it looked nice.

for the flowers i chose forget-me-nots because she loses her memory, and then the hands on the skirt represent her fight to stay alive (both while drowning and before) and how she reached out for help in the months leading up to her death but no one answered. she's also, in a way, reaching for her lost memories, who she used to be, etc etc. the blue thingy in the back was initially supposed to be a mermaid tail as like. a single callback to the little mermaid (and the fact that she was a really good swimmer, so it's ironic that she drowned), but i took the mermaid aspect out & added in the two eyes.

the eyes are like. the feeling of being watched. the eye at the front will always look at kyrie no matter what, and the eye in the back will look at anyone else it can find, as if pleading for help. i just noticed the bracelet? not sure why that's there. probably just for fun. anyways the ring with the star on it is from a play called 'the princess who had no name', which is about a princess with amnesia who's trying to find out who she is and where she came from.

and finally, the weapon! it's meant to be a sparkler, like the little fireworks yk? it's a callback to the very first draft of her character from like 2 years ago, back when the kyries shared the name lylie instead & i had written absolutely nothing about her character. but i was reading through the old plot/character info a while ago and i found out she apparently really liked fireworks??? that was like my only piece of info about her. i figured since she'd changed so much it was only fair i put a little something from her roots. but the sparkler can also represent how 'bright' she appears to be; people are drawn towards her, for better or worse.

using the same drawing, uhh... idk there's some stuff with the proportions that like. sometimes looks fine to me and sometimes looks off? i really just eyeball anatomy and stuff so it's not always particularly Good. i like the colors i have here but they're not the colors i was intending to use. i didn't really know how to draw the jacket and everything i did with the top just looked strange so they're not As Detailed or 'good' as they probably could be? there's parts where i got lazy and all that but all in all i really like this drawing and nothing big really jumps out at me, these are all just nitpicks

Now for my obligatory monthly tbhk rant post:

OH GOD, OH DEAR GOD

IT’S BEEN VERBALLY SAID, KOU AND MITSUBA ARE IN THE WELL 😭

Like you knew that they were by the implication of last chapter, but now that they said they’re in there, the impact really hits.

Kou and the Mitsuba of this world who promised each other that they’d live a full life ignoring whatever happened in their past life. A Kou and mitsuba who never had to deal with mitsuba’s death, immediately fucking died and are in the well.

This means that mitsuba’s spirit is still probably wandering the house, if he hasn’t joined the other house spirits or passed to the far shore.

And I want to curse out AidaIro for literally killing everyone, reading this chapter I verbally said, “oh god they’re all dying.”

And once again the weight of her friends lives is on Nene, even in a world which was supposed to be their escape, where they were supposed to live untangled with the supernatural.

Something must have cursed them with this fate, as why would Kou and mitsuba be led to the red house with an empty form. I wonder is the red house transcends timelines in some way, like despite still having Tsukasa sacrifice himself for Amane, they end up back at the red house.

And poor Akane, he went through changing the timelines to try and make everyone happy. Where they were able to live in a world where none of them needed to die. And yet here they are at the red house, probably about to die.

I wonder how Nene is gonna react to seeing Hanako in their original timeline, after knowing that he could have easily become what he is in this chapter, after seeing him so nonchalantly kill and hurt her friends.

I also wonder is that personality that we see in the red house is influenced by the red house spirit, in the past chapters, he looks confused and acts harmless.

Oh and this image

I don’t think that Kou and Mitsuba are in this image, as it would take away from the whole unseen horror thing. And I can’t see Kou’s traffic safety earring, or their school uniforms. But seeing the corpses really just sets in that the Yugi Amane (possibly possessed) of this world is a serial killer.

And once again AidaIro has bestowed another horribly sad chapter to us. Despite our sorrow and lack of hope for any sort of happy ending, we are not able to escape tbhk’s grip. Thanks a lot AidaIro for being an amazingly good writer, because I don’t often read manga with a lot of death, but I am physically unable to pull myself away from this series.

I think Tbhk has a bad impression on the outside of the fandom, due to the weird name and sort of generic first few chapters. I have friends who dropped it after watching the anime, and every time I hear that I’m like, “noo, read it, the anime left out literally all the plot. The cut the clock keeper arc and watered down everything.”

Once you make it past hell of mirrors in the manga, everything gets just better and better.

It is really simple actually why I chose this for Hanako and Tsukasa, it's mostly because Tsukasa is a lot of time portrayed as a 'bad version' of Hanako in canon. Even if We didn't know at that time (I created the au around chapter 67/68 I think?), I didn't think it was all there was to Tsukasa's character and it was also to make a little bit of fun of 'oh look the protagonist had an evil twin all along' trope that I find terrible (I am sorry AidaIro, but this is what we litteraly had when chapter 68 was out)

ANYWAYS! It actually also is really important to the plot of the After Life City :D

Idk if you know anything about Cosmogony? It is the myths of the creation of the world, in different mythologies! I always liked to read about different cosmogonies around the world :D

So in this au, I don't really know how anything started but I just know that they used to be gods on Earth. And at one point, one of the god of lighting (I let you guess which one *coughs*) decided to banned other gods into the underwold because they were violent with humans their new creations. (and because they are god, powers and all is important) 

What's important is, there were gods who were ripped of their previous powers (so no godlike anymore) and trapped into the underworlds unable to see/feel anything and lacking of any lights. 

The youngest there were the first god of the sun and the god of the moon, who were now lacking of their previous natural lights when they were the ones who gave it to humans in the first place. Unable to see anything, the sun lost every bit of his sanity and desesperate to see something again killed his brother to rip him open to see his inner light :)))

The ancient god of the sun created the first artificial light of the underworld coming from his brother's soul. His brother, sad but happy to see the other finally getting back to his sense, became the first shadow to ever exist in the Underworld.

You probably got it. We have here Amane and Tsukasa :DD

The inspiration for this too is coming from the fact that Amane sounds close to Amaterasu the godess of the sun and Tsukasa's name is pretty close to Tsukuyomi the god of the moon in japanese mythology :DDDD (I think this is a pretty common theory? I know I am not the first one to make this link ^^ Especially since Tsukuyomi is Amaterasu’s  brother ahah ) So you have the explanation on why Tsukasa is Amane's shadow and why Amane decided to created a new name and forgot everything about what he did out of guilt.

All of this happened looooong ago and now gods don’t exist anymore, they left the Earth to mortals and supernaturals :D 

(and I gave you some important plots as to why ligths are a pretty big problem into the After Life city :)))
