‘Name’ - core OC Aesthetic Board Challenge

So I saw @lady-grace-pens aesthetic board for Katty from @of-sinners-and-seas and I loved it. So I did it for Aurelia the main character for The Seven Relics series that I haven’t even started to outline yet.

I was expecting lots of gold, but I actually got lots of soft roses which worked perfectly for her, because her other board uses peach rose petals.

Hi there! I noticed you're away for the week, so no worries if you can't answer right now.

I just wanted to say I love your mood boards; they're so perfect!

Most of the time, you don't even include pictures of the main characters, but the mood is so clear that you can easily envision them.

Do you have any advice for a newbie like me who wants to start creating mood boards? What's your process?

Oh, anon, thank you! 🖤 That is so sweet of you to say, and I am so touched that you've enjoyed my moodboards! Putting this under a read more because it got a little long!

For making moodboards (and pretty much any of my designs like my fic banners) I use Canva. They have some great free templates available where you basically just have to drop the pictures into the spaces and it's already formatted and everything!

As far as finding images go, I usually will use either the images provided by Canva, or ones from Pinterest, since I have boards for all of my series. As of right now, like for my aesthetic boards, I may start with searching "Character Name Aesthetic" into Pinterest and see what pops up. Sometimes, I have specific images in mind, like with Tommy I knew I wanted horses and cigarettes to be featured somewhere. If I need to, I'll adjust the brightness/other aspects of a photo after uploading it into Canva in order to make it fit with all the images in the moodboard, and if I need to I'll also crop things to fit better.

When it comes to formatting moodboards, I have a bit of a rough template I try to follow for the different types of boards I've made, specifically aesthetic, OC appearance, OC x Canon, and Fics.

For aesthetic boards, I try to find images I highly associate with the character or OC, and sometimes if a character has a specific color scheme, like red for my Peaky Blinders OC Lucy or blue for my Inception OC Alice, I'll try to search for images focusing on those colors, and use 4 of those and 4 more neutral colored images so that the color really pops. Then I'll put a quote that fits the character as the center image of the board. I mostly use 9 image (3x3) moodboard templates. Typically I try to keep these faceless, just because I like the challenge of trying to find at minimum 8 images to fit a character that don't involve their actual physical appearance, but you can 100% use these too if you want!

For OC appearance boards, I try to find 4 photos of clothing that they would wear which go in each corner of the 3x3 moodboard, 2 of their hair (faceless) which goes on the two middle spaces of the right and left columns, 1 of their eye color to go in the center, and 2 of their faceclaim to go in the top middle and bottom middle rows. Basically what I want to do is give as good of a general consensus as I can of what my OC looks like. Because I can't draw, this is sort of how I can convey to anyone interested how I personally picture my OCs.

For OC x Canon, I use a similar method as I do for OC appearance. I find 4 aesthetic images that either I can relate to their relationship or that just fit the "vibe" of them as a couple. For example, in my Alice x Robert moodboard, I have an image of the ocean there because the ocean is a big motif in their series. These go in the 4 corners of the 3x3. I also find a quote that fits them as a couple to go in the center, and an image of the OC faceclaim and the canon character to go in the middle spaces of the right and left columns. For the top middle and bottom middle rows, I find two faceless "couple" pictures. Something like two people holding hands, cuddling, kissing, etc.

Finally, for fic-specific moodboards, I take basically the same approach as I do for OC x Canon, except the quote in the center and the aesthetic images in the corners should relate to the topic of the fic, and not necessarily just the OC x Canon relationship.

Obviously this is just how I prefer to do things, as I like having clear systems and templates in place that I can easily follow, and you can make your moodboards however you chose! My main tips would be to try to ensure you have a clear theme, whether that's just a specific color or a topic, character, or story motif. That'll help your moodboard feel more cohesive. And just play around with it! Try out different images, try them out in different spots, adjust the image settings like the brightness or contrast, try out filters (I use the black and white ones a lot) and just have fun!

I mean, I think in general fandoms nowadays have alot of xreader content (which is slay, we love it) and I think thats made people more comfortable making OCs aswell, so I don't think people really hate on OCs now as much as back then. It was crazy then LMAO people were harsh to others. It was kinda like a blessing in disguise since that made me put my absolute all into not making my OCs mary sues or pick-me's, it put me on my A game.

But like I love making OCs so much that I can't get into a fandom if I can't make one, like, they're so fun to do ! The pinterest boards, the playlists and everything, even the research is fun, and OCxCanon is my guilty pleasure its sooooo good, like people would have hated me back in the day LMAOO.

Also, yeeeess, Sabbath crew characters are SOOO uniquely written like, even if I didn't do romance and stuff, I still would have wanted her in the crew. Like the aesthetics and all the boys come from different places, have different motivations and are so well written it drives me insane to the point I can't articulate myself well. (and I am hoping we get some more of Joker's backstory soon, since it's his time to shine uwu)

Right, it was so crazy back then! Ocs were constantly getting judged and criticisms were so often and almost unavoidable. Well, at least it's not like that anymore and I'm glad because creating ocs are genuinely fun. I can't stay in fandom without creating an oc too lmfao, I'm glad we have things in common. Omp Pinterest boards are my favorite, I immediately decide aesthetic and often personality traits based on that, also au's!! And I LOVE doing researches so much already but it's even more fun when you have to write about it. Nah girl, people back in the day were such strong haters😭 "oc x canon? So embarrassing, grow up" "imagine creating ocs" LEAVE US ALONE PLS! They're good for writing tho, I don't think they should be judged whether it's Marysue or pick me, like alright that's your oc. We don't have to make your oc likable😭 Personally, I loveee writing characters who lack emotional intelligence (I love torturing my ocs so much, it's my free therapy) or morally gray characters. I mean, I'm not fan of pick me characters or marysues but idk I don't judge when they're ocs.

I can write huge analysis about Sabbath alone, their symbols, their ways of thinking, morals and etc and I won't get bored. Don't get it wrong, I love hummingbird but I'm more interested in characters who play antagonistic roles, they're usually more complex and that's like a challenge put in front of you to analyse and that's so damn exciting. I hope we'll get to know more about Sabbath, like genuinely. Wooin's, Hyuk's and Joker's backstories are needed, also how did Joker meet Wooin & Hyuk? I can also write analysis about why Vinny suits Sabbath.

Will Powder and Silco meet in the future?

What's Powder's fashion style in the fic? Do you have any visual description of an outfit she'd wear in the revolution verse, or an aesthetic pic with the right feel?

Speaking of visual aids, I'm sorry but can you help me out identifying the support cast and who is who from the show? It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize who Scar and Kai were from the show, and Eve I know is the pink haired Firelight Jinx shorts, but I'm a bit confused as for the others 😅

oh my gosh these are great lol and certainly provide a (more than welcome) challenge! I'll do my best!

the plan is that they get to meet at least once, not far from the end of the story. By then, things have gotten pretty crazy, and Powder has to appeal to Silco's dad mode

I feel like Powder would still be generally in the Jinx color palette, lots of pinks and purples and black, but also blue. Lots of tank tops and t-shirts, and she's pretty much always stomping around in combat boots. I imagine her wearing a good bit of denim. She has a favorite denim jacket, too, kinda bomber jacket style, totally swallows her up, that sort of vibe. High collars, chokers, etc would still be part of her look. I see her as certainly liking style but keeping it more practical these days to make things easy. Like an effortless look. She still paints her nails fun colors. I figured I'd pull up some Mush pics to honor the originator of the reverse au design that started it all lol. These I think Powder would wear:

no problem! So as far as the supporting cast is concerned, Sky is Jayce and Viktor's lab assistant. Megan's an OC, but they'd look similar (I needed someone to work at the hospital for chapter 3 and then I liked her and just kept her around lol). Gianna is based on the Firelight who kicks Caitlyn in episode 6 lol and is working on the mural in episode 7, though we never see her face. Ajuna is part of Ekko's lore from League, a friend who dies and he's unable to save. He's connected to the predecessor to the Firelight mural from the show. i just kinda threw him in there for fun because "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" did the same. I think that's it for actual characters. The rest are OCs. I really ought to gather some visual references for them. Marnie is around Mel's skintone, for example...

UGH favorite scene this is so hard lol. I still really like all of chapter 2. I just can't help it. But since I've talked about liking it before, let me get out of my comfort zone. I think it's a little too hard to pick one, so I'll give a handful: the last section of chapter 3, all of chapter 7, really, the deal scene in chapter 10, the hospital in chapter 16, the balcony in chapter 18, the room key scene in chapter 19, and Caitlyn's conspiracy board in chapter 22 are all ones I'm pretty proud of or just enjoy reading because I think they're funny lol. I'm also proud of chapter 20 in general because plot twist!

I pre-write a lot of things, but as far as a scene I haven't written yet, I'm really excited to finish some stuff for Ekko's collection and there are some fun scenes of Powder really coming into her own. In particular, there's one that'll be quite a ways off where Powder sits down with Vi and they hash out a lot of the things between them, acknowledging the need to give each other space to live their lives as they've chosen to live them.

ahhhhhhh these idiots are gonna have so much fluff! What I will say is they should be dating within the next ten chapters (lest the story get away from me which is possible but I think by then they should be together lol). Before then, though, they're going to do some graffiti, fall into a fountain, and get all sappy in Ekko's car. And then after they get together they cuddle a lot and have a bunch of sex lmao. In a way, the physical relationship relates to the broader story in that Ekko helps Powder work on her confidence and articulating what she wants, which is similar to her journey of growing as a leader, a journey he also kicks off (though he kicked that one off by accident lol).

I think as the story keeps going it'll just get more taxing for me in general, if that makes sense. I'm always worried about coming off as preachy or heavy-handed. I'm probably overthinking things a lot. But I'd say that some of the setbacks the characters are going to face in pursuing their goals are going to be taxing in that emotional way. So far I think some of the stuff at the beginning was hard, and chapter 17 with Powder thinking about her hair was also hard, but it's kind of cathartic. The most I struggle with is how do I write a liberation story that works, because there's not a lot in the world for me to draw on in the way that I want due to international sabotage, etc. So I'm kinda taking these movements and trying to learn from their mistakes without feeling like I've got a perfect solution, because that's certainly not true, but I want to be hopeful. That balance of hope, a gesture at realism, tone and balance, trying to learn from the past, all of that can get a bit difficult for me.

okay, I think that covers it! These were so good for getting me to really think. It got a bit rambly at the end. I need to give that last one some more thought, so I might revisit it later. Thanks so much! 😄💙

Nausicaä and the valley of the wind (also known as warriors of the wind), its a very beautiful film !!

i enjoy animal crossing as well! Stardew valley is (imo) a fun and simple game, you just farm crops,look after animals and befriended/romance the townspeople, id highly recommended it (i also enjoy playing it with other people).

im sure all the players are going to heckin love that design!! (If you ever share it outside of the campaign id love to see it, i bet it looks amazing!!) I also just love making ocs for other people it makes me happy plus I love doing fun lil design challenges with friends basically everyone using the same inspiration to make thir own design to see how others interpret things differently its v fun to do, using 3 emojis for one design, a mood board, aesthetics and more. I also enjoy redesigning cartoon characters its a fun exercise!

Oh! If you are sure! The baker loves forest animals and the colour green, her baked goods normally resemble lil cute animals like mice and squirrels. Her fav colour is a deep green and she decorates with lil cute ornaments and music boxes (enesco mice music boxs are the inspo for that). She was scared and startled to see his partly transformed werewolf form near the bakery, but she saw he was shaking and just really wanted to help him, she could still recognize him and thought he was weird and a lil bit of a prick but also funny because she barely talked to him before (again how he was raised made him really shit at communicating with people) but that didn't change the fact she wanted to help. She lets him live with her as long as he helps around the house/apartment. But she also nursed him back to health and comforted him because he was in a ton of pain when transforming. She also helps him with his self confidence because he hates how he looks now (going from a pretty boy twig to big monster man). She thinks he's handsome and actually they get along well because they both love books. She warms up really fast to his personality when she realises he's actually very sweet and most of his issues was because he just didn't know how to interact with people that weren't rich. He fell in love with her from seeing her interact with other people and the rare occasions hed go into the bakery (his " friend " group didn't like the idea of him going and made sure he'd eat small and pricy things) his favourite thing to buy was a chocolate chip cookie, he find them very comforting. He thinks shes extremely pretty and sweet, his heart races whenever he sees her. In his fully transformed state if he wishes to go outside he has to wear a hoodie she made him (to accommodate his size and features). He doesn't like leaving the house much especially without her, he gets very excited when she comes home from work and he lays her on top of him if she is cold (hes very warm like a heating pad) and he likes comforting her and holding her close. He checks her ingredients for her and keeps the house clean when she's away. She is really thankful for it since she forgets easily. When they go outside together he is very protective and a lil posessive, not liking others looking at her. She doesn't mind (she finds it attractive) plus she loves going on picnics with him. With his speech being rough and not full scentances (he still thinks in them he just doesn't know how to express it in his fully tansformed state) he worries that she will get upset with him but she never does and understands him very easily. (His speech is very much like big mac from mlp). She realises she has fallen in love with him when she leans against him after he comforts her after a hard day at work. She kisses his cheek to let him know. Both of them are very easily flustered. She covers her face when she blushes and he looks away (his tail wagging like crazy unable hide how happy he is).

Sorry if non of the makes any sense (i struggle to explain things a lot!) Please let me know if you want to know more!! (About any of the ideas)

If you are busy you should take as much time you need and if you are upset but don't want to talk id give you time, but if you wanted to talk I'd listen, its the least anyone can do. You are human no one should expect more from you than you can give that includes yourself. Take the time you need and focus on yourself because you deserve to be the best and happiest you, you can be!

Roslyn's top favorite would be Kiki's delivery service. She would mostly watch slice of life type animes but she also loves magical girl type of genres too.

Hmmm, I don't really know much about autism so I don't think Ros would be on the spectrum. I mean she does little stims and even clap her hands when she's very excited about something but, yeah, I'm not fully in the know about it.

I wouldn't mind making some of my characters be on the spectrum, but I would have to look into first so I don't accidentally get things completely wrong and offended anyone. The last thing I want to do is bullshit and call it a day.

Dragon Ball Super manga ch. 71-73

Just to recap:

Granolah wants revenge on Frieza and the Saiyans for destroying his people. So he’s used a set of Dragon Balls to wish for ultimate power.

The Heeters want Frieza dead, but they don’t want Granolah to kill him, since they’re beginning to see Granolah as a potential threat.  So they’ve come up with a scheme to get Goku and Vegeta to fight Granolah for them.  

I’m not sure why the Heeters need a scheme, though, since Goku and Vegeta would be eager to fight Granolah now that he’s become the strongest warrior in the universe, and Granolah would jump at the chance to kill the last of the Saiyans.

Now, as far as Goku and Vegeta’s arc in this story, they’re both trying to master divine power.  Goku can use Ultra Instinct more effectively, but he still can’t sustain it for very long.  The problem is that Goku has this transformation he does when he’s using the complete UI power.  That’s why he has silver hair when he does it.  It’s not that the Ultra Instinct takes a toll on his stamina, it’s that the silver haired transformation wears him out, and that’s the only way he knows how to do it. 

Meanwhile, Whis is using Ultra Instinct all the time, even when he’s not doing anything.  He doesn’t need a transformation to do it, and neither should Goku, so that’s what Goku needs to fix. 

Meanwhile, Vegeta has abandoned any hope of learning Ultra Instinct himself, and instead he’s following Beerus’ path to power by learning how to use Destruction Energy, or “hakai”.  We see this exercise where Beerus sends logs over a waterfall and Vegeta has to destroy each one as they fall over, but he overdoes it and destroys he waterfall itself, which annoys Beerus. 

As for the Heeters, Elec sends Oil and Macki to ask questions from Zuno, the all-knowing information broker.  The answers they get will help them prepare to trick the Saiyans and Granolah into fighting each other.  The fourth member of the Heeters, Gas, is their strongest fighter, and he’s still kind of bummed out because Elec didn’t let him fight Granolah when he first revealed his ultimate strength.  Elec insists that he has every confidence in Gas’ power, and he believes that Gas can surpass even Frieza. 

As far as I can tell, the Heeters genuinely seem to think Gas is more powerful than everyone else in this story.  Frieza, Granolah, Goku, Vegeta... as far as the Heeters are concerned, Gas can take out all of them. But Elec doesn’t want Gas to fight just yet.  I’m not sure why, except that he’s much more interested in information than power, and it seems like he finds more value in keeping Gas’ true power a secret than he does in any victories Gas might achieve.

So once Macki and Oil finish up with Zuno, they head for Earth and approach Chi-Chi and Bulma, who then contact the Saiyans for them.  Zuno must have told them where they live and that Bulma could contact them on Beerus’ planet. 

Basically, the Heeters’ scheme to get Goku and Vegeta to fight is “just ask them”.  The only tricky bit is that Macki swipes Bulma’s Dragon Radar while they wait for Whis to bring them back to Earth.  Also, they claim that Granolah is a terrible villain terrorizing the people of Planet Cereal.

The boys agree to the job, mostly for the challenge of it, but also because the Heeters are offering to pay in sky gold, which is valuable on Earth.   I like the Heeters’ spaceship.  I gave my Saiyan OC a “star-yacht”, and tried to come up with lots of extravagant doo-dads to put on board, and this observation deck with a pool and an open bar is pretty much the aesthetic I was going for.  That, and the way it’s completely lost on Goku and Vegeta.  Goku only cares about the food supply, and Vegeta does training drills at the bottom of the pool.   So it’s reassuring to see Toyotaro and I are in alignment on this sort of thing.

Macki then contacts Granolah and tells him a made-up story about how they tried to learn Frieza’s location, but Frieza found out about it, and now he’s sending two Saiyan henchmen to Cereal to take Granolah out.  He’s shocked to hear that any Saiyans are left, but he’s satisfied with this turn of events.  This way he can clobber some Saiyans and take revenge on them, and he can force them to tell where Frieza is.

I don’t know, the basic plot is pretty sound.  This is standard comic book storytelling where the bad guys trick the good guys into fighting each other.  Granolah’s not the protagonist of his own comic, but the formula still works.  But it also seems like a little too much?  I mean, the Heeters could just ask Granolah, Goku, and Vegeta to fight each other, and they’d probably do it.  Is all this trickery even necessary?  Also, why is Granolah relying on the Heeters to help him find Frieza?  You’d think he’d just track Frieza down himself.  I mean, can Frieza be that hard to find?  He never kept a low profile before.

Anyway, Goku and Vegeta immediately get suspicious as soon as they arrive on Cereal.  If Granolah is the villain that Macki claimed, then why are the wrecked cities so old, and why are the new cities untouched?

But then Granolah uses his sniper powers on them, and Goku gets taken out right off the bat.  Vegeta says they only brought two senzu beans, and Goku already needs one before they’ve even found their enemy. 

The main reason Goku got tagged here is that he’s trying to apply Whis’ teaching, and use Ultra Instinct in his base form.  But it’s not working, and Vegeta warns him that he’ll get killed if he keeps this up. 

Goku starts us off, and he has a lot of trouble with Granolah, mainly because his right eye is so enhanced now that he can perceive Goku’s blood flow and muscle movements, which tell him how to react to Goku’s moves. 

This talk jogs Vegeta’s memory, so while Goku and Granolah fight, he inspects the old ruins more closely, and discovers the Oozaru footprints left behind from the invasion.

As for Goku, he starts running through different transformations, attempting to use Ultra Instinct with them instead of the silver-haired form he normally uses.  Let me unpack that a bit.  Whis’ point was that the silver form is too unstable, but it’s the one that gives Goku the most useful Ultra Instinct ability.  So he tried to use UI in base form instead, but it didn’t work.  Now, he’s trying to use UI in Super Saiyan, God, and Blue, hoping that one of them will help him regulate Ultra Instinct well enough to get him through this fight without resorting to the silver-haired form.

Of course, Granolah doesn’t care about any of this.  He just wants Goku dead.

Goku eventually teleports away to regroup with Vegeta, and Vegeta explains what he’s discovered.  He now realizes that Granolah is a Cerealian, and he wants to avenge what the Saiyans did to his people.  That means Macki deceived them.  Moreover, Oil’s been monitoring the battle, so the Heeters now know that the jig is up.

As for Goku, he finally caves in and uses the silver-haired transformation to put Granolah away.  Granolah is astonished to find that his super-vision can’t detect any weak points in Goku when he’s like this. 

And it seems like Goku has him beat, but then it turns out Goku wasn’t fighting the real Granolah after all.  Instead, Granolah used a portion of his powers to create a decoy of himself, and Goku’s been fighting that the whole time. 

Granolah’s plan was to have the copy fight the Saiyans so that the real Granolah could save his strength for Frieza, but this worked out anyway, since it allowed Goku to wear himself out until his Ultra Instinct was no longer a factor.  Now Granolah has Goku dead to rights, unless....

That’s right, Vegeta steps in and declares that he’s going to succeed where Goku failed.  Sure, Vegeta says this every time, but this time he might actually be on to something.  I mean, he seemed to pick up Beerus’ training a lot faster than Goku was mastering Whis’ training.

 It’s kind of surreal to me that I’m at this point in the story and I have no idea how this will go down.  I mean, I’ve read some spoilers, but that was mostly about Vegeta’s new transformation, and the big twist at the end of the arc.  The rest is a complete mystery to me.  So I don’t know if Vegeta actually beats Granolah, or if Goku has to step in and fight him again.  I mean, I went through this uncertainty during the run of the Dragon Ball Super anime, but that ended several years ago, and I never really got the sense that Vegeta was going to steal the show.  Now, though, this feels a lot like the Cell Saga when I first watched it, where I wasn’t too sure who would be the one to take Cell down.  My point is that I haven’t felt this way about a Dragon Ball story in a long, long time.  It’s a good thing.
