Every kid thinks their parents are superheroes. They feel unbreakable, they seem everlasting, like they can do no wrong, and always be there to save you. That statement held true with Scarlett Lowman, the only child of Happy Lowman, but maybe even more so. Happy was tough, his demeanor was one not to be fucked with, and even as a kid Scarlett could pick up on how people felt when Happy was around. They were uncomfortable, they would stare, and all of that made Scarlett feel like she had an actual superhero as a father. Not like these other kids who talked highly of their parents, Scarlett actually had a dad who saved the day. That viewpoint of her father came crashing down pretty quickly, he was no longer the superhero she envisioned him. It was disappointing, it was heartbreaking, she felt alone because while she saw her father for as human as he was, everyone else was still thinking of their parents as invincible. It caused the girl to grow angry. Irritation was quick to build up within her.  Rage just constantly flowed through her veins, and while it was a born Lowman trait, the trauma of her young life added an additional layer to it.
Life wasn’t easy for Scarlett growing up, her mom passed away when she was young, before she even got a chance to know her, leaving her father to raise her alone. Scarlett was a daddy’s girl, but not in the typical sense. Happy Lowman was unique, to say the least. When parents' day came, the story was he was a construction worker, some might say contractor. It wasn’t a lie, Happy did pick up spare jobs here or there to pick up extra money, he was good at fixing things, but he was also good at breaking things too.
Scarlett’s relationship with Happy was complex. He was her father, she loved him, she would do anything for him, but because of that, she struggled a lot. With the life Happy lead, he crossed a lot of lines with Scar as she grew up. She saw a lot of shit she probably shouldn’t have, to his defense he did try and hide it from her up until a certain point, but once that boundary had been broken once, it never went back up.
Scarlett thrived off chaos, off danger, off anger, it made her feel a release of all the demons cooped up in her brain. That changed a bit when she had her daughter, Alexa. Her way of thinking needed to shift for the sake of her, but that just meant she kept a lot more bottled up.
Scarlett walked through her front door, hanging up her apron from the downtown market on the hooks in the entryway. There were muffled laughs and voices coming from the den, which doubled as a sunroom and playroom. It was a little secluded from the rest of the house which is why neither Happy or Lex had heard Scarlett come home. Her footsteps were soft as she made her way over to that side of the house.
“Yea, I want tea.” Happy’s voice was rough and short, but it still brought a smile to Scarlett’s face as she saw her fully tatted, biker father, sitting at a tiny chair and table that had purple Rapunzel artwork all over it, holding his hand out with a small pink teacup in his hand.
As the little hands of her 8 year old daughter reached across the table to meet Happy’s extended arm with the tea pot and began to pour what she assumed to be water, Scarlett felt her heart pick up its pace and her face fell in a frown. Quickly, she moved a few steps back and over, so she was out of their view but still able to see them and hear them. Immediately the flashback came to her.
Scarlett poured the large bottle of bottom shelf vodka over Happy’s gash that ran up his forearm. The flesh was cut so deep that when Scarlett started to stitch it up, she could see his bone pretty clearly through the tissue. She didn’t need to look long, because once she saw it, it was ingrained in her head, something she’d carried with her a long time. To get the mental image out of her mind, she focused on sewing the skin together, trying to match the tattoos up perfectly so that there’d be no scar left behind or obvious misalignment in the tattoo. Connecting the shadowing and line work was a trying task as she moved up his arm with the makeshift stitches that were just string and a shitty sanitized needle. The memory of her dad’s groans and flinches were another thing hard to shake. It made him human and again, while eventually all kids come to the realization that their parents aren’t superheroes, Scarlett came to that reality a lot sooner and a lot harder than most.
Happy was her protector. He was badass. He started to teach her how to fight when she turned 5, she was constantly surrounded by MC members. Capes were kuttes and sitting on the back of a motorcycle was the equivalent to flying. Nothing ever went wrong when Happy was around. Until it did.
Scarlett kept watching the two, it was crazy to see the differences in how Happy was as a father versus a grandfather. Parts of her tried to rationalize it. Happy was younger, jumping from charter to charter, in the thick of things. Now, he was older, in wisdom and age. The gray hair that grew around his beard was a reminder to Scarlett about how different the man was now.
“Drink it, Grandpa!” Lex giggled as she brought her own teacup up to her mouth.
Happy brought the drink to his mouth to take a sip, the little girl immediately jumping up in an attempt to scare him.
“Boo!” Her hands moved outwards as she stood up and shook the table as she did it.
The table shaking and pressing up against Happy’s abdomen was the true cause for him spilling the water all over his face, but he pretended the girl was successful in scaring him.
“You scared me!” His fake gasp mixed with the water dripping down his beard off his chin brought Scarlett back again.
Her age had to have been older than Lex, by a few years but Scarlett was still young. It wasn’t the first time she had to patch Happy up, but it was the one that stuck out the most because it was the most brutal. His face was covered in blood, spilling out from his mouth and nose, which was clearly broken. It was probably embedded in her brain because Happy had woken her up out of her sleep and she thought she was in a nightmare. Her scream probably still rang off in his head.
“Scar, it’s dad.” He said in the kindest voice possible for him.
Her breathing was fast, heart pounding, her grip on him was hard in an attempt to at first fight him off, but now it was just recovering from the startle.
Her little feet moved across the cold hardwood floors as they made their way to the bathroom.
“Should I call the motorcycle men?” Her voice trembled thinking maybe this was something for the other superheroes in her life. Scar knew not to mention cops, it was one of the house rules. No cops. Ever. The reasoning why Happy didn’t want the MC there was foggy in her memory, but it didn’t matter because the responsibility being on her was clear as day.
“You scared me.” Her voice was steady as she handed him the frozen bag of vegetables for his ribs which were undoubtedly broken and then moved to the bullet wound near his knee.
Happy ignored her comment. “It went straight through, clean it and stitch it.”
It came out as an order, but his voice wasn’t mean, just short.
“What about your ribs?”
“Don’t worry about it.” Happy grunted back.
The rest of the patch up was silent. Scarlett didn’t ask anymore questions, she focused on the task at hand, watching her small hands feed the thread through his skin. She was sitting on the backs of her legs as Happy sat on the closed toilet lid. It was so interesting to her how her hands didn’t shake anymore, how the scars got cleaner and cleaner as the years and experience passed. As she finished up, she leaned over to grab a washcloth from under the sink, she wet it with warm water from the tub so didn’t have to get up just yet. Patting the sewed up wound dry, she was careful not to be too harsh in pressure but a part of her felt the rage bubbling up in the pit of her stomach and wanted an outlet for it. He hissed at the abrasive touch of the coarse cloth, you offered him a weak glance as an apology before standing up and handing him the wash cloth.
“Use the other side to clean up your face.” Her voice was disconnected and cold. A trait she learned from Happy, she could turn it on and off whenever she liked.
She began to walk out of the bathroom, her mind shifting into a space where she’d be able to handle everything that just happened, pushing her rage down, bottling up her questions, her confusion.
“I didn’t mean to scare you.”
The sentence wasn’t much, but it held a lot of weight. This was probably the moment that truly changed everything for Scarlett, when she truly went numb to it all.
“I’m going back to bed, my science fair is tomorrow.” She didn’t even look back over at him, just paused in her steps to speak before picking up her pace again.
She got lost in her thoughts and memories for a few minutes, letting herself feel emotions she hadn’t felt in years. The pain of being Happy’s daughter came with a lot of battles, emotional and physical. Feeling overwhelmed, she looked back at her father who was now letting Alexa put a flower crown on his bald head. It was a sight to be seen, it was something that she wished she could go take a picture of and show the guys at the club because she knew they’d never let him live it down.
“Mommy!” Lex’s voice called out. The young girl was running towards her and Scarlett quickly stepped out from the wall and walked over to meet her.
“Hey baby girl.” She picked her up and flooded her cheek with kisses. “You have fun with Pops?” The question was genuine even though she knew what the answer would be.
“Yes, we played in the yard and then when it got dark, Pops made me mac n cheese and then we had a tea party!!” Alexa hadn’t taken a breath in her entirety of speaking, so excited to share about her night.
“Wow, busy night. It’s time for you to go brush your teeth and get ready for bed, okay? Pops will still be here when you’re done to say goodnight.” Just as quick as she was placed down, the little girl was pattering her feet away down the hallway listening to her mother’s instructions.
Scarlett had turned to watch her flee, not expecting the hand on her back. She jumped a bit and heard Happy’s chuckle.
“Didn’t mean to scare you.”
The words rattled in her brain.
“I’m gonna make a cup of actual tea before I leave. You want one?” He asked as he moved past Scarlett into the kitchen. It was then that she realized he still had the flower crown on.
Tea and flower crowns. She had to wonder where the fuck the time went. She also was wondering what she did to deserve the Happy she got growing up compared to this one. Sure, there was this typical pipeline of parents to grandparents, but this was different. This was day and night.
Scarlett nodded and followed him into the kitchen and jumped up on the counter as he heated up the kettle on the stove.
“Nice crown.” She said bringing her knee up to rest her head on while her other leg dangled over the counter.
“Lex told me it brings out my tattoos.” He rasped as he took the crown off his head before he reached up to the shelf with the tea bags.
Scarlett had to smile at that, it was something her kid would say. “She really loves her tea parties, thanks for entertaining her.”
“Ain’t my first tea party.” Happy turned around now leaning on the counter opposite from Scarlett.
Their eyes connected as Scarlett frowned in question, “You and the guys turn chapel into tea time?”
Happy chuckled again before reaching for his back pocket and pulling out his wallet. It didn’t take him long before he slide out a picture from behind his license and was leaning forward to pass it to Scarlett.
She saw the back first.
Scar ♥
The heart was hand drawn in Happy’s scratch handwriting. Her hand flipped the picture and she felt something pull at her heart.
The photo was of her as a kid, probably middle school age, way too old to be playing tea party but there she sat, a costume dress that was way too small on her slipped on over her clothes, a plastic jeweled crown on her head and on Happy’s. The little teacups were raised in the air as they cheers for the camera.
“Ma took it.” Happy referred to his mother before the kettle was screaming to signal it was ready.
Scarlett felt her eyes get heavy in tears. She didn’t remember this, it made her wonder how much she didn’t recall from her years growing up. Was she only made to remember the bad shit? Or was it that she only chose to? Staring at the picture, she only looked up when Happy handed her the hot cup of tea.
“I forgot about this.” She handed the photo back to him.
“Keep it.” He was now next to her filling his mug up with tons of sugar. “I have a couple others in my wallet.”
Scarlett nodded before jumping down and pinning the photo to her bulletin board that hung on the wall perpendicular to the sink.
“Pops! I brushed my teeth AND changed into my jammies.” Lex’s voice sounded from the entryway to the kitchen.
“Good job, kid. I’ll be there in a minute to tuck you in.” Happy nodded for the girl to go to her room.
He took a few more sips of his tea before placing it down and making his way out of the kitchen.
“You know, that’s something I wish I did more of.” He turned to look at Scarlett who frowned in a way to ask what he was talking about. “Tuck you in. I was always,” he paused, looking for the word he wanted to use, “out.”
“Well, you have ample opportunity to make up for it with Lex.” Scarlett answered. It hurt to say, but it was a truth they both had to come to the realization of. Things were always going to be this way, there was no going back, only moving forward. Her eyes jumped back to the picture, but maybe if she did need to look back, there were some moments she wouldn’t hate looking back on.

Ok on your own (A Hat In Time fanfic)
Summary: As a young cat starving on the streets of the Metro, Emily decides the only way to make a place for herself is to join one of the notorious gangs who control her home.
Next
Word count: 3,038
Warnings: Mentions of death, injury, blood, mentions of gang violence, manipulation
Author's notes: Hey! Here's the backstory for my version of Empress. This can be read as a standalone but it ties into this AU's timeline. Anyway, Emily is young Empress in case you hadn't figured that out. The title is because I feel this chapter fits with the song "Okay on your own" by mxmtoon and Carly Rae Jepsen. Enjoy!
Cold?
Cold.
Her mother was cold.
Her siblings were cold.
She let out a pathetic mewl and curled up to sleep against them anyway.
So small.
So unaware of what had happened.
Tumblr media
Days had passed.
Her mother and siblings hadn't woken up.
Emily prodded her mother one last time before dragging herself up.
Her muscles ached from lack of use as she stumbled out of the cardboard box she called home.
She opened her mouth, trying to take in the scents nearby.
There was a distinct smell; something indescribable that seemed to be everywhere here. It clung to her fur a little bit and carried a stench closer to her mother and siblings.
Then there was another - food.
The kitten chirped and walked as quickly as she could out onto one of the main streets.
That first distinct stench grew stronger and clogged up her nose, making food detection practically impossible.
Emily stuck to the edges of the open space, away from the large expanse.
Open space was dangerous, that much she knew.
She leant up on her hind paws, tipping a bin over.
Metal echoed over stone as it crashed to the ground.
Emily crawled into it, grabbing a half eaten slice of pizza and dragging it back out with her.
A shadow fell over her.
“You seem lost.”
A voice, probably belonging to a gang member.
Her fur bristled and she dropped the food, running.
Gang members meant danger.
And she'd rather starve than get caught by one of them.
Tumblr media
Emily darted between alleyways, scavenging through bins.
Would there be a single scrap of food?
A soft meow from inside a bin further down the dark path.
Emily trotted over to it and peered inside.
A small ball of black fluff, hiding under a paper thin piece of red fabric that had a grubby badge attached to it.
“Name?” She asked.
The younger kitten looked up at her, ears flattening back against their head.
A hiss to her left. “Not yours.”
The young grey cat spun to face another black cat about her size.
“Hungry,” she argued, claws flexing as much as they could.
The black cat tilted his head to the side, eyeing her curiously. “Hungry?”
He walked quickly past her, pulling a half eaten takeaway box out from behind a bin.
“Share?” He offered, sitting down a foot away.
Emily cautiously moved closer, sniffing the food before diving in.
The black cat's tail flicked as he eyed her patchy fur and thin frame. “Name?”
“Emily,” she replied between bites.
“Claw.”
“Thanks.”
“Friend?”
Emily stared at him, large eyes blinking a couple times before she spoke.
“Friend.”
Claw walked over to the bin, pulling out the small kitten and its fabric.
Emily pointed at it with her tail. “Name?”
“No,” Claw answered.
Emily finished her mouthful before walking over and looking down at the tiny thing.
“Badge,” she decided.
Claw nodded beside her, repeating the name. “Badge.”
Tumblr media
Badge was asleep, Claw curled up around them, occasionally grooming the smallest of the three.
Emily sat on top of a nearby box, watching out for danger.
“No food?” Claw asked.
Emily shook her head, a growl coming out of her stomach at the mention of something to eat.
“Gangs have food,” Claw continued.
Emily's fur stood on end and she bounded over to him.
“Gangs are dangerous!” She hissed, quiet enough to not wake up Badge.
“Gangs have food,” Claw repeated adamantly.
Emily lashed her tail, pacing back and forth.
Claw would do whatever she would.
They both had to look after Badge.
Which meant this decision wasn't for her: it was for all three of them.
Emily stopped in front of her two companions, looking at them.
They were so thin, there was never enough food to go around.
“Fine. Gangs.”
Tumblr media
“Stay here,” Claw ordered as Emily lifted Badge into a cardboard box.
“Why?” They asked, so small still.
“We're going for a bit,” Emily said.
“Why?”
“Food.”
“Oh.”
“Stay.”
“Okay.”
Claw and Emily began towards the open area at the middle of the metro.
There were always a few gang members hiding around there, waiting to find new recruits.
Tumblr media
“Are you sure?” Emily asked Claw, both of them hovering by the outskirts of the open area.
“We have to,” Claw responded with a shrug.
“For Badge.”
“For Badge.”
The two of them prowled into the middle of the clearing, muscles tense.
Emily let out a yelp as a set of paws roughly picked her up.
She was roughly handled into a bag, claws sinking into her skin slightly.
Claw was thrown in beside her.
Darkness consumed her surroundings a second later.
Tumblr media
Pain?
Pain.
Her left shoulder ached, sore and red as she looked at it.
Blood crusted around the claw marks left there.
Emily tried to stand, getting about as far as dragging herself halfway up before her hind paws clanked.
Shackles?
The metal rubbed at her ankles as she twisted her head around, trying to gather her bearings.
The room was dark around her ring of light from above, but she could make out something moving in the shadows.
A deep reverberating growl filled the room as an orange cat stepped out into her small patch of light.
It must've been four metres high, and almost twice as long.
Emily tried to run before tripping and remembering her situation.
The orange cat crept up to her before flopping onto its side and purring.
Emily stared in astonishment at the beast of an animal.
The light above her made a tutting sound before lights flooded the room.
She stared around at what was seemingly a large cage, dozens of black cats crowded around outside.
All able to stand on their hind paws for longer than a small amount of time.
Every cat surrounding her had a red scarf tied around their wrist or neck, save for one.
A door swung open in front of her.
The tabby cat that stalked forward had a red jacket slung around their shoulders as they crouched down to Emily, undoing her shackles.
“You understand me?” The cat with the jacket asked, staying crouched beside the young cat.
Emily nodded before quietly speaking. “Where's Claw?”
“The little black cat? I could only take one of you, your friend is with the other gang.”
The cat with the red jacket held up Emily by her armpits, spinning around to show her off to the other cats.
“New blood!”
The crowd let out a cheer of enthusiasm before dispersing.
“What's your name kid?” The jacket cat asked.
“Emily,” she answered.
“I'm Majesty,” the cat replied.
“Badge!” Emily suddenly gasped, trying to scramble out of Majesty's grip.
“Woah, okay, slow down, what the peck is Badge?” Majesty laughed.
Emily twisted around to look at the tabby. “Badge. My little sibling. Very little and very hungry.”
Majesty hummed as he thought. “Okay kid, we can go pick up your sibling. We're a family here so everyone looks after each other, okay?”
Emily nodded and Majesty set her down.
“Which gang?” Emily asked.
Majesty pulled out a red square of fabric from his jacket pocket, dropping it onto Emily's back.
“Welcome to the Fallen Angels kid.”
Tumblr media
“I don't know how you scraps have managed to survive for so long but you're okay now. You'll never go hungry again,” Majesty said as he carried Emily under one arm and Badge under the other.
“Claw helped,” Emily mewed.
“Where is Claw?” Badge asked.
Majesty put both of them down into a tub of warm water and both small cats let out complaining yowls.
“Oh, be quiet! You're both filthy, you need to be cleaned,” Majesty growled, scrubbing at Badge as he held them in one paw.
Emily held her head up in the water, trying to keep breathing.
Badge let out a pathetic mewl as Majesty placed their sodden form on a towel next to the tub, picking up Emily and roughly cleaning her fur.
“You really were caked in dirt,” Majesty mused and Emily looked down at her fur.
Gone was the dark grey she was used to, giving way to a light grey and white fade.
Soap bubbles brushed over her left shoulder and she hissed, spitting at Majesty.
“I know, I know, it hurts. It'll heal over soon, I'm sorry you got picked up by those Demon brutes, my Angels would have handled you and your friend more gently,” Majesty sighed, placing Emily next to Badge before towelling each kitten off in turn.
“Demons?” Badge parroted.
“Chosen Demons, the other gang. You see a cat wearing blue, you run,” Majesty instructed before scooping both of them up again.
Emily watched as hallways flitted past, cats lounging about or running up and down.
They eventually turned off into a room, stacks of blankets and pillows there.
A couple other kittens were curled up in a pile on one side of the room as Emily and Badge were set down.
“This is the crèche. You'll sleep here at night and be taught during the day. Be nice to your roommates, you are all family now,” Majesty ordered. “Now get some sleep.”
Emily nodded, picking Badge up by the scruff of their neck and carried them over to an empty patch of blanket.
She dropped them onto the soft fabric, curling around them.
“Where's Claw?” Badge questioned.
Emily sighed, sweeping her tail round to rest over their flank.
“Don't know,” she admitted.
Badge let out a whimper, pressing closer to her. “Miss him.”
“Me too.”
Tumblr media
“Practise standing upright. It's the first step to survival. It will take anywhere between a week to a month to master it,” Majesty explained before quickly gnawing on one of his claws. “Once you've mastered that, we'll move onto assignments.”
“Who is going to supervise us?” A black kitten on the other side of the room asked.
“No one. You don't have to do anything. But you'll get kicked out of the gang if you can't earn your keep.” Majesty shrugged. “I'll visit you in the morning and evening. What you do in between is none of my business.”
The gaggle of black kittens in the crèche set about trying to stand as Majesty crossed over to Emily and Badge.
“So, I've got a feeling that you're going to do great at this,” the tabby said with a grin. “Come find me when you're able to stand, okay kid?”
Emily nodded. “Okay sir.”
“Please, call me Majesty.”
The tabby left the crèche with a sweep of his tail and Emily looked down at Badge.
The small ball of fur was staring around with wide eyes, ears flat against their head.
Emily licked the top of their head, hoping to provide some comfort. “We'll be fine.”
“Want Claw,” Badge mewled.
Emily's possible response was cut off as one of the other kittens walked up to them.
“New,” he purred, eyes glinting with curiousity as he circled them.
Emily's spine arched and her fur stood on end. “Leave.”
“Nice fur,” he continued as he stood back in front of them.
Emily reached out a paw, batting Badge behind her.
“Leave,” she repeated quietly.
The cat's features twisted into a scowl and he hissed at her. “You stick out! Not right!”
One of the other kittens hesitantly added a comment. “Weird fur.” They proceeded to point to Badge. “Weird eyes.”
A growl reverberated in Emily's throat and she spread her stance slightly. “Leave. Won't ask again.”
“Or?” The first cat taunted.
Emily sprung at him, barreling him back onto the floor.
Her and Claw had had a few playful fights before.
This wasn't the same.
The black kitten let out a yowl as she bit down through his ear, tearing out a chunk of it before releasing him.
“Leave,” she panted, chest rising and falling rapidly as a tang of iron hit the back of her throat.
The kitten raced out the room, ear leaving spots of red in his wake.
She glanced challengingly at the other members of the crèche and spat out a small chunk of the other cat's ear.
They all went back to practising standing.
She turned to Badge, replying to his earlier words.
“We'll be fine.”
It took about ten minutes of practising for Badge to give up.
“Hurts,” Badge moaned, sitting back on their haunches.
Emily pushed her front paws off the wall again, teetering on her hind legs briefly before dropping back down to all fours.
She leant over, grooming a bit of hair that stuck up behind their ear. “Practice makes less hurt.”
Badge flopped onto their side. “Need rest.”
Emily sat down next to him, muscles still tense from earlier.
Heavy pawsteps sounded behind her and Emily panicked slightly as Majesty sat down next to her.
“Kid, I heard you beat up Rex. Is that true?” The tabby asked.
Emily's tail protectively rested over Badge as she replied. “He was mean to Badge.”
The leader let out a bark of laughter. “I like you kid, you've got spunk. Come straight to me once you learn to stand. I'll set you up with a nice job on the surface.”
“The surface?” Emily parroted.
Majesty nodded, brushing the side of his jacket briefly. “Yeah. Down here we don't get the sun or plants or the sky. But up there you've got opportunities galore! Oceans, deserts, cities, the moon! So much food you'd never go hungry again.”
Emily stared hopefully up at him, wishing that what he was saying was true.
The surface sounded like paradise.
“But- it all depends on you learning to stand. So you better be quick about that, okay? I'll even let you take the little one up there with you once they can stand.”
The tabby stood, stretching slightly before leaving.
Emily flicked her gaze to Badge’s sleeping form and Majesty's words rang in her head.Never go hungry again.
Emily gritted her teeth and walked back towards the wall.
She would learn to stand.
After all, she'd come here to help feed Badge.
Tumblr media
Weeks passed.
Emily mastered standing and Badge soon followed suit.
But it wasn't without price.
Emily remembered her words as they sat together in front of Majesty.
“If you stand, we can see Claw.”
It was rotten but it seemed to be the only way to motivate the younger kitten.
The way Badge had beamed up at her once they could stand made her feel even worse.
“Alright, we need to set you up somewhere you can learn how to talk more,” Majesty said, drumming his claws on his desk.
Majesty's office was cold, the walls a mix of concrete and corrugated metal.
The floor was coated with plush red carpet, dark wooden furniture mostly up against the walls.
The leader was alternating between scrolling on his phone and clicking away at the computer on his desk.
The fluorescent lights above them hummed with electricity.
Emily's tail flicked to curl over Badge's spin, subtly nudging them closer.
“I could send you to school but that place is full of annoying little brats. And you'd get expelled for starting fights,” Majesty explained before pausing and giving Emily a levelled look. “That's rule number one. No starting fights. Or joining fights. If I don't give you permission to fight, don't do it.”
Emily nodded and Badge copied the movement.
The tabby paused his scrolling before a smile broke out across his face. “Oh that could be useful. Learn how to talk and it will help develop your lying skills.”
The cat muttered to himself before letting out a small purr.
“Congrats kids. You're going to be part of a theatre group.”
“Theatre group…?” Badge said.
Majesty grinned. “You'll learn to act! It will also help with memorisation, lying, mimicking… Peck, this could lead to some good exploitational skills.”
Emily understood about half of what he was saying.
“I have high hopes for you two.”
Tumblr media
Emily's fur stood on end as she stood in the hall beside Badge, the smaller kitten practically sticking to her side in the room of birds and cats.
She bristled even further when a reddish coloured owl walked up to them.
“Hi!”
Emily had spotted her earlier, walking around and introducing herself to everyone else there.
“Who are you?” The owl asked, smiling at them.
She seemed fairly nice, despite how glaringly brightly coloured clothes were.
“Emily,” the cat hesitantly replied.
The owl nodded and turned to Badge. “And you?”
“Badge,” Emily replied for them, worried about how wide-eyed they seemed to be.
“Can we be friends?” Scarlett asked, suddenly seeming shyer. “Um, no one else here seems to want to be friends with me.”
Emily blinked blankly, taking a moment to process.
“Friends?”
“Mhm.”
Scarlett moved to hold her arms close to her chest, shifting nervously from one foot to another.
She was just as nervous as they were.
“Okay. Friends,” Emily decided.
Scarlett seemed to brighten again, features stretching as she grinned.
“Really?”
Emily turned to Badge, nudging them. “This is Scarlett. Friend.”
The kitten still seemed shook-up but managed a quick hello.
“Where do you live?” Scarlett asked, sitting down on the floor.
Emily coaxed Badge to sit down before also joining them. “Not here.”
“Oh. Okay. Well, where do you stay?”
Emily's head tilted to the side.
“Do you want to stay with me?”
They didn't have to report back to Majesty for three days.
And she didn't fancy going back to alleyways.
“Please,” she whispered.
Scarlett nodded. “Mummy won't mind much. She'll be happy I have friends.”
The owl’s face fell slightly.
“That's why I'm here.”
She seemed to remember something and brightened up.
“Have you ever watched Cinderella?”
“What?”
“We can watch it this evening.”
They continued to chat until Badge piped up.
“Can we see Claw now?”
Scarlett looked between the black kitten and the grey and white kitten.
“Who's Claw?”
Emily dipped her head to speak quietly to Badge.
“He asked to play a game. He's hiding. We'll find him soon.”
She straightened back up to address Scarlett. “No one.”
Scarlett seemed sceptical but continued their conversation.
Emily's heart hurt.
She wasn't sure why.
But why couldn't Claw be here?

Closed Starter for @a-adventurer between Errol and Scarlett (Stranger Things AU)
It was another slow day at work. Most kids were in school and their parents at work, so only a few stragglers were hanging out at the library today. Errol sat behind the front desk with his elbows resting on the table and his chin in his hands as he stared out the window with nothing else to do. It had been almost an hour since anyone in the library had needed anything, and even longer than that since anyone new had walked in. Errol was bored out of his mind, which was perhaps one of his least favorite feelings in the world. Seemed his coworker felt the same, as he glanced over at her filing her nails with a deadpan expression on her face.
Looking away from her to glance around at the isles of books, Errol’s eyes caught on a girl sitting at one of the tables set aside in the lounging area. He recognized her as someone he’d met recently and talked to, only a little bit, but enough to include her in his growing friends group. Deciding to take a break from the front desk duties, since there wasn’t really anything to do anyways, Errol stood up and let his coworker take over while he approached the girl at the table, who appeared to be drawing something.
“It’s Scarlett, right?” he asked, coming up behind her and peeking over her shoulder at the work in progress she was drawing. “I don’t know if you remember, I’m Errol. I work here, though it’s pretty slow right now. Do you mind if I take a look at what you’re sketching?” He flashed her a friendly smile, hoping it would encourage her.

//Translation//
Name: Scarlett
Age: 18 years old
Zodiac Sign: ♏ (Scorpio)
Hobby: swimming
Height: 173 centimeters/5'8.11 ft.
About Me:
I can hack your computer :P
Scarlett is Salem's girlfriend but rather on a platonic base. I don't like her character sheet very much but meanwhile a certain time has passed and I'd say my drawing skills got A LOT better.
If you look closely, you can see the Slipknot logo on her boots. The same logo is on Hiisi's t-shirt. That's because I mixed up Salem and Hiisi and I wanted to create a funny reference between the 'couple'...

While Mara wasn't clear on why she ended her relationship with Scarlett, the goddess of beauty, she has no intentions of reconnecting with her ex. Scarlett however really wants to try again, and be close to Mara again!

Tumblr media
--------------------------------------------------
Y/n sat staring at the star studded cast in front of her at the reading table. Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen. It was wild all the people she had spent her whole life looking up to, and here she was, about to film a whole Marvel movie with them.
This was new territory for her too. A whole new genre of movie, different from the horror movies she was known for. The rest of the cast didn’t watch her movies so they didn’t know how she worked.
“Y/n? You okay?” Chris Evans asked waving his hand around in front of her face. “You zoned out there.” He added softly to the teen who flushed slightly and nodded looking down at her hands. “Have you done enough reading now? Are you ready to get into costume and makeup?”
Y/n paused for a moment picking at her fingers before she looked up and nodded. “Yeah. Ill go get ready. I’ll see you guys tomorrow?” She took a quick glance around at everyone who shot her small nods before she disappeared. When she finally came to set, fully ready for her scene, her manager waved her over.
“Okay… lets get this over with guys.” She said, her manager chuckling at the bored look on the teenagers face that was currently covered in bruises and blood, her clothes hanging off of the girls frail body, a gash across her face where a scar usually sat on her characters face.
She was filming her background scene, how her character, Maddison, got where she was, fighting with the Avengers. The torture and pain the character had gone through obvious with the way she was dressed. “Alright you, are you ready to scream?” Thomas asked the girl with a grimace, knowing what he had to pretend to do to the girl. She nodded and stepped on to the set, a cold damp cell that had red splatter all over one wall, showing what she was supposed to have gone through. Thomas stepped forward, the director getting ready for filming, unknown to the teen, the rest of her cast mates stepped in to the studio, hiding in the shadows.
Scarlett elbowed a nervous looking Lizzie who motioned to the makeup on the girls face, the blonde shook her head slightly motioning to be quiet with a finger to her lips. Evans eyes widened as he studied the gash on the girls face. They all knew it was makeup, but as they had grown protective of the young girl, it scared them all. The all focused in on the girl when the director called action.
--Filming scene--
Maddison, a 13 year old girl who had been kidnapped by Baron Strucker at the age of 5, sat huddled against the bloody wall, her whole body shaking as she slowly lifted her head, a giant gash across her face, towards the man standing in front of her. The man merely raised his hand that held a ragged, rusty dagger and slashed down at the girl, her face getting slashed.
The girl let out a blood curdling scream, a scream so loud it even made Strucker take a step back out of shock. The man then turned on his heel and slammed the cell door closed whispering to the girl. “No one will ever want someone as disgusting as you.”
--Scene over--
The director called cut and y/n stood up and with a lack of emotion on her face and grabbed her water bottle. She had barely gotten a sip of it when she was collided with, a pair of arms wrapping around her, gripping her tightly. The teen squeaked as she tried to move the blonde hair to see the horrified look of all her adult castmates standing around her. She patted the back of what she assumed to be Scarlett with a look of confusion running across her face.
“What was that?” Mark asked as he nervously twisted his hands. “How did you bring that up? That was so real…”
“What do you mean?” Y/n asked as Scarlett finally pulled back. “I’m confused?”
“It was very convincing sounding darling.” The actress said, one hand not leaving the teens arm. “Are you okay?”
“Oh. I’m fine?” She responded. “I did- have you guys never seen any of my movies?”
RDJ looked at the girl sheepishly. “Your movies are intense kid… theyre a little scary for most of us.” The teen barked out a laugh shaking her head.
“My whole career I’ve only done horror movies, that scream just is what it is at this point. Nothing behind it, just 5 years of perfecting it.” She said with a small shrug and a small smirk on her face.
“Jesus kid, you gave us a heart attack as a whole.” Hemsworth chuckled as he ruffled the girls hair making the teen roll her eyes with a small smile as she was called back to the set.

Moulin Rouge Discotrain AU (part twenty four)
Summary: (Post-game canon) The Conductor and DJ Grooves agree to finally work on a movie together. They come up with 'Moulin Rouge', a musical drama filled with romance. Over time the two directors grow closer and discover that maybe they don't hate each other as much.

Warnings: Conductor's repressed trauma about his wife's death
Author's notes: I feel bad for putting Conductor through this. But it had to happen. But I also bring more of Conductor's theatre club so maybe you guys can forgive me for doing this to him? Plus, you get to see more of his love with his wife when they were younger. That's good, right?
Conductor bolted the door shut to his room on the Owl Express before running over to his bed.
He crouched down, pulling out his projector and screen from under the bed, taking a few minutes to set them up before slotting the tape in.
Tumblr media
"Conductor! Where are you?" Badge asked loudly, the camera shaking where the cat was running down a hall with it in hand.
"We're in here!" Emily shouted.
Badge turned off into a room where the other three of them were.
Emily stared intensely at her laptop before turning back to the sewing in her lap.
A younger Conductor flipped through a script under a tent made of a few chairs and a blanket.
And there, beside him, was Scarlett, scanning the script along with him.
Tumblr media
Conductor drew a shaky breath, pausing the tape reel.
The phone in the room buzzed and he reluctantly answered it.
"Yes?"
"It's Empress. Grooves says you're hiding somewhere on the train."
Conductor put the phone back on its stand, sitting back down and playing the tape further.
Tumblr media
"I'm so excited to do Phantom this year!" Badge said, sitting down to make a triangle between the four of them.
The camera subtly tilted over to Conductor and Scarlett.
Scarlett brushed a wing through the feathers at the side of Conductor's face and he leaned into the touch.
"You two will be great as Phantom and Christine," Emily added. Conductor jumped, feathers ruffling as he pulled away from Scarlett's touch.
"Peck off," Conductor grouched.
The camera swung to look at Emily.
The cat had a needle sticking out the side of her mouth, staring scrutinously at her stitching.
"Why did I ever let you convince me to make you a coat?" Emily questioned, slightly muffled around the needle. "You better wear this all the time."
"He will. He always freezes," Scarlett teased, the camera moving back to face her and Conductor.
"Shut up," Conductor chuckled, burying his face in her neck.
Tumblr media
Conductor sniffed as he paused it, his emotions threatening to overwhelm him.
He gripped tightly to his dark coat, pulling it tighter around himself as he shivered.
They'd been right.
He wore it all the time because he was cold.
He hit play again.
Tumblr media
Conductor was holding the camera this time.
The shot was much steadier than the previous ones as Scarlett sang, dancing around a practice room.
Emily and Badge walked up on her sides.
"One week later, I'm writing a letter nightly, now my life gets better every letter that you write me," Scarlett sang, her years of playing Eliza evident. "Laughing at my sister because she wants to form a harem."
"I'm just saying, if you really loved me you would share him," Emily purred.
"Ha!" Badge and Scarlett exclaimed.
The camera shifted as it was put down on a table and Conductor crossed the room to stand parallel to the bench his friends then sat down at.
"Two weeks later, in the living room stressin'. My father, stone faced, as you're asking for his blessing. I'm dying inside as you wine and dine, and I'm trying not to cry cause there's nothing that I can do," Scarlett continued to sing.
"My father makes his way across the room to you. I panic for a second thinking we're through. Then he shakes your hand and says be true. And you turn back to me, smiling - I'm helpless!"
Conductor strode across the room, looping his arms around Scarlett's waist.
She laughed as he picked her up and spun her, the two of them forgetting about their practice.
"Lovebirds, you're never gonna get this year's show done if you keep interrupting practice," Emily complained, hitting pause on the music track they had playing.
"I know the entire thing back to back. Yer just upset I got recast as Alexander again," Conductor argued, setting Scarlett back down. "And Scarlett has only ever played Eliza, she's got this. If anythin', she's the best of anyone here."
"Doesn't mean you can slack off and be romantic. Badge has never played Peggy before," Emily growled.
"Badge remembers the script too. And even if they didn't, then I'm sure that one of those badges might help them out," Conductor spat.
Tumblr media
"That's when it went downhill," Conductor whispered, pausing the video again.
The Express let out a whine as the wood of the floor creaked.
"Is that why you hate Hamilton?" The phone buzzed with static as the train spoke.
"It might be," Conductor breathed.
"You loved it before Emily died."
"I did, didn't I?"
He hit play again.
Tumblr media
The camera sat on a table while Conductor grinned giddily at Badge.
"Guess what?" Conductor asked.
"What?" Badge asked, always curious about things that went on.
"She said yes!" Conductor exclaimed.
Badge shrieked delightedly, flinging themself at him.
"Finally! Peck, I've waited so long!" Badge squealed, clinging to the owl.
"Will you be the best man?"
"Of course!"
Tumblr media
He paused.
"I didn't even know it was filmin' then."
"Badge loved to record things," The Express reminded.
Conductor looked up as someone knocked on the door to his room.
"Go away!" Conductor shouted.
"Please can I come in?" Grooves asked quietly.
"No!" He looked over at the phone on the wall. "Don't you dare."
The door clicked as it unlocked and Grooves opened it.
"Fine, I'll buy cheap coal for the next month," Conductor told the train.
Grooves sat down on the floor with Conductor, pulling the owl into a hug.
"Can you explain it?" Grooves asked softly, resting his head atop Conductor's.
"I don't want to."
"That's fine. I'll wait until you're ready."
"I miss her."
"I know."
"She was so talented. I got her to star in a couple of my movies before she- before she-"
"You don't have to say it," Grooves said, hugging Conductor closer to him.
"Scarlett was such a talented owl. The best actress I've ever met," Conductor started. "She was so kind when I first met her. I was scared of makin' friends back then. But she helped me. And it took a few years but I fell for her. And a few years later we were together."
"It was stupid of me to think it'd last. She'd been sick for years. We knew it was coming. But Roxie was so young and I didn't know what to do," Conductor continued.
"I sent her to boarding school and focused on my movies. It's my fault we're not close. I've tried to make it up but I can't. I can't."
Grooves hugged him tighter as Conductor repeated it.
"I can't."
