How to follow a Mediterranean Greek diet
The Mediterranean diet naturally expands throughout the coastal countries of South Europe, North Africa and the Middle East but there are some small differences between their cuisines. So here I am writing specifically about the Greek version of the Mediterranean diet, known for its delicious, natural flavours and its significant health benefits.
Eat daily:
Olive oil: the pillar, the liquid green gold of the Mediterranean Greek diet. Olive oil should be used ideally exclusively for all purposes. It's dressing salads, it's used in cooking and in fact it's traditionally what is used in frying too. Replace all types of oils, butter and margarine with olive oil even when making pastries. The only problem here is that outside of the Mediterranean basin olive oil can be pricey, however that's the foundation the diet is based on. If you are interested in following the traditional Greek diet for taste or health purposes, it is good to really incorporate olive oil in your daily cooking. If it’s not possible to afford buying olive oil all the time (although you could balance it out by not buying other oils and butter), a non-Greek-typical but equivalent alternative could be avocado oil. However, I doubt avocado oil or any other oil can remotely compare to olive oil in health properties, taste or in any other positive quality 🫒
Vinegar: Just like olive oil, vinegar is a very important ingredient and is also used in natural remedies However, it can hurt a sensitive GI tract if consumed in large portions. A little bit of it added to meals frequently is very healthy. Apple cider vinegar is also very loved and used in salads often 🍇
Vegetables: no portion can be too much (wild greens, garlic, onions, cauliflowers, cucumbers, eggplants, beets, peppers, spinach, artichokes, zucchini, peas, lettuce, the list never ends). Tomatoes and broccoli are recent additions to the Greek diet however they were integrated perfectly to the Greek cuisine. In general, all vegetables can be enjoyed freely with some moderation in the potatoes, especially when fried 🥗
Fruits: grapes, berries, apples, melons, cherries, figs, prunes, sour cherries, peaches, pomegranates are the most historically loved fruits in the Greek diet. Since the middle ages citruses like the orange, the lemon and the mandarin are more and more loved. Greeks nowadays use lemon almost more than vinegar and both have become integral components of the Greek diet. Obviously, tropical fruits like, say, banana, mango, grapefruit are not present in the traditional Greek diet, however all fruits are good fruits and you can enjoy them freely 🍎
Legumes. Eat freely to the tolerance of your body. Legumes can be too heavy for some GI tracts. Legumes are a great source of protein and fibre. Choose brown lentils, white beans, fava beans, chickpeas, giant beans and black eyed peas the most 🫘
Nuts, seeds: almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, peanuts etc. Eat as much as your body can take, because everybody is different 🥜
Mushrooms: mushroom it up! A great healthy way to have them is grilled with herbs and plain or apple cider vinegar dressing 🍄🟫
Whole grains: this is the traditional way to eat grains. Brown bread, oats, whole wheat pasta 🌾
Fish and seafood: find and eat them fresh. Instead of buying them deep frozen from the big markets, find local fish stores if your place is coastal and has them. Eat both large but especially small and medium sized fish. Some fish like salmon and tuna should ideally not be consumed daily due to their high levels of mercury and fats 🐟🎣🍤
Herbs and spices. Feel free to use as much as you want however if you are interested also in the flavours of the Greek diet besides the health benefits, a tip is that Greek dishes do not contain extremely hot spices 🌿
Water: A lot of water daily and, mind you, plain clear mineral water. No flavoured water, definitely not sparkling water and ideally no other liquids in place of the water. I mean, sure you can have liquids but you should ALSO have plain water 💧
Eat a few times per week:
Poultry: Poultry and lean meats entered the Greek cuisine mostly after the Middle Ages however they are nowadays enjoyed as part of the Greek Mediterranean diet because they are tasty and healthier than other types of meat. Chicken has become especially popular in the Greek cuisine. Other birds are the pheasant, the quail, the turkey and more sparsely the duck 🍗
Eggs: eggs are healthy and should be consumed a few times per week but not daily because they can cause a rise in cholesterol levels 🥚
Dairy: Greeks LOVE dairy products, especially the various types of cheese, however they are often irritating to the GI tract and they are linked with rises in the level of inflammation in the body. This is why you should ideally limit them to a few times per week. One exception is the yoghurt, which is fermented and can be perhaps consumed more frequently due to its beneficial properties. Important note: if you want to follow the Greek diet, you should ideally opt for milk and other dairy products from goats and sheep! Cow milk is not traditionally used in the Greek cuisine often and sheep and goat milk are significantly healthier and more nutritious. The only drawback is the stronger smell, however if you can get past that, it is strongly advised to switch to those instead of cow milk. Another note: what is known as “Greek yoghurt” in western countries is not in fact a true Greek yoghurt. What you call Greek yoghurt is to us simply a strained yoghurt, a yoghurt from which the whey has been removed. Sometimes in western markets (and in Greek “modern” dessert yoghurt products) butterfat and powdermilk is added to them and they are mostly made of cow’s milk. Again, a traditional Greek yoghurt is made of sheep, goat milk or a mix of both and is unstrained. It also has a trademark thickened skin on its top (dunno if this is the actual term lol) which is in fact the part of the yoghurt that contains the most nutrients and personally it’s the tastiest part of the yoghurt but apparently it is not for everyone. As an example, a study showed that an unstrained sheep yoghurt has more protein, more omega-3 fatty acids and minerals yet fewer calories and fats than a strained cow yoghurt 🍦🧀
Wine: in small portions, like a small glass up to a few times per week and always in combination with your meal. You don’t drink it to get hammered, you drink it for the health benefits it has in very moderate quantities and for the reasonable mild euphoria it causes before it becomes harmful. The GI tract is linked to the brain and is detrimentally influenced by negative emotions. This is why it is important to try to be in a good mood, relaxed and peaceful when you sit down to eat. A sip of wine now and then can be good for that 🍷
Eat once per week or ideally less:
Red meat like pork or beef. In fact, beef should be the one most avoided not only because it is indeed the rarest of the common meats used in traditional Greek cuisine but also because you can’t separate the fat from the meat as easily as with pork. To follow the Greek style in a healthy way opt for goat, then lamb or pork and make beef your most occasional meat dish 🥩
Processed meats should be eaten rarely. If you are in a mood for it though, opt for Greek style sausages with herbs in or bacon at most. Cured meats like ham are better to be avoided but turkey is the healthiest of them. They are not a part of a traditional Greek cuisine though.
Refined grains can be enjoyed weekly but should not replace whole grains
Pastries. What’s new, pastries are not ideal for health. However, if you are yearning for something sweet, if you want to keep it healthy as much as possible in the “Greek way”, opt for desserts made of healthy ingredients like honey, nuts, olive oil and fruits. Chocolate came to Greece in the 19th century, however it has become an integral part of confectionery since then. Opt ideally for dark chocolate, combined with nuts or fruits such as oranges and prunes. Greeks especially love chocolate combined with nuts.
Soft and sugary drinks. Avoid them overall, especially the processed products in the markets. If you need a sweet drink really bad, you can keep it traditional by making your own sweet lemonade, sour cherry, pomegranate etc drink at home. You could also enjoy small quantities of lemon or mastic liquors which are good for digestion.
BONUS TIPS & PHILOSOPHY:
Try to find mastic if it’s available where you live. The mastic is a resin produced from the mastic tree, a species endemic to the Greek island of Chios and a small part of the opposite coast of Turkey. It has numerous beneficial properties, especially for digestion and gut health, and it combines them with a very pleasant fresh and sweet flavour. You can find it in gums that boost digestion, in drinks, in pastries and even in non-edible products like toothpastes. Learn about it and give it a try, no matter if you are interested in following Greek diet or not.
Greek cuisine does not go berserk on as many ingredients as possible (however Greeks typically add more ingredients than, say, Italians and perhaps fewer than the Middle Easterners). Don’t worry about adding as many foods and nutrients in one single dish. The most important thing in Greek cuisine philosophy is to pick the finest ingredients. Avoid deep frozen or precooked and processed ingredients. Pick whole fruits and vegetables from your local small grocery store. For example, don’t buy a watermelon slice in a zelatin bag from the supermarket. Take the whole freaking watermelon home. You heard me right. It’s heavy, yes, but you would be surprised how much tastier and healthier it is this way. Go to the butcher for meat. Go to the specific cheese shop for cheese. Go to the fisherman for fish and seafood. Go to the pastry shop and get a nice dessert instead of buying candies from the market.
Remember that in moderation you can eat most of the foods you desire, especially if they are not processed foods. There is nothing about the Greek diet that is restrictive in terms of its philosophy - historically the intake of various foods was regulated only based on availability and price. There are no foods you should limit due to any perception of them being “bad” and you should never feel guilty the moment you are actually having the food. Just work slowly and progressively by building gradual appreciation for healthy foods and prize less nutritious foods as occasional taste bud rewards.
As said above, a good mood is crucial when you sit down to eat. In the history of the Greek society this translated into eating with friends and / or family, maybe with the occasional sip of wine, ideally in a pleasant environment and always taking your time with your food. If some of these are less feasible than others, try alternatively to improve the setting in which you eat, to eat in an environment that calms you down. Schedule your meal so that you won’t eat in anxiety or hurry, if this is possible. Think of pleasant memories and feel grateful for your food. Cheers! Or, you know, εις υγείαν!

Enjoy!
~
One of your first memories was of your Mom holding a small bit of cake between her fingers.
It was made of thin layers of dough, heavy with sheep cheese, crushed nuts and honey, so heavy with it that the dipping honey caught the sunlight just before you bit in.
Sweet. Creamy. Nutty. All combining together in your mouth as you chew.
You groaned in pure delight as she laughed, getting you a plate with a much bigger piece. See? I told you that you would like it. Mama is never wrong. Not with food.
Just like that, food had became your life. To you, there was no better way to say ‘I love you’ than by cooking someone a good meal.
You learned how to perfectly roast fishes, how to stuffed chicken, the right moment to add herbs or how to use olive oils or butter to add rich flavors to the dish. You learned how to knead the bread, how to time the rise just right and the best spots in the stone ovens to place the loaf.
Food was everything. It was the bittersweet memory of your mama’s hand on your cheek after a sickness took her far too soon, it was a way to feed your family while working hard as a fisherman, it was a way to earn your place among warriors and kings.
You loved all of it, even as the other men had scoffed at you for enjoying women’ work. However they never turned away a meal you cooked, at home or in the war tents.
The very last thing you cooked, a recipe your mama taught you, was a simple bread, meant for dipping in wine.
Barley flour. Dry yeast from the grapes. Then you added the simple spice mix you came up with and always added in. The one that had people waiting outside for your bakery before the markets opened.
Parsley. Rosemary. Oregano. Garlic cloves smashed up and added into the bread, and just a little dash of salt.
You had set one aside for yourself for later.
You never got to eat it.
~
When the news came that the terrifying god of the underworld was looking for a new cook, you didn’t hesitate.
To get a spot in the house of the gods was prime time. It meant respect, a place to live and most importantly it meant regular income. That was money you can send to your mama and sisters so they can get into a better area of Asphodel.
You had spent hours over the cake.
You made sure that each layer of the dough was perfect, thin and flakey with a satisfying bite, that the cheese was the perfect amount of tangy creaminess, that nuts were crushed to the right size, that the honey was placed in the perfect spot to complement the cheese and nuts.
This had to work because your family worked hard to get the coin to order such things from the expensive shop of the boatman.
Even the neighbors had pitched in, with the promise that you will pay them back.
You took a nervous breath as you shifted on your feet, winced as the terrifying King of Below tossed aside the meal someone brought him, promptly dismissing them.
“And another one bites the dust.” The sleep god muttered as he crossed something off a list.
He looked up, blinking heavy downturned eyes at them. You and the other commoners were careful to keep their gazes low, not willing to show any disrespect to any of the gods.
The gentle one huffed and gestured for the one before you to go ahead. You were up after this, assuming that the person before you didn’t have something amazing.
The underworld King made a loud gagging sound and wordlessly dismissed the shade. Gentle one only clicked his tongue as he crossed out another line and shook his head, white curls flopping around.
“Good luck, buddy.” He told you with a cheerful grin, using his quill to point to the desk.
Did the gods normally call people buddy?
With a deep breath, you went to the looming desk, feeling like you were meeting the fates themselves.
“And what is this?” The King of those below growled, his haunting eyes locked onto you like a predatory bird. His hellhound shifted next to him, their three noses twitching at the food.
“This is a plakous, my lord.” You said, proud that your voice was stronger than you expected. “Made with wheat dough, rich honey-“
The King held up a large hand and you stopped speaking, fearing you had already lost your chance. A shade took the plate from you and brought it to their master.
You held your breath as he took the first bite, your heart no longer beat but you swore you felt it in that moment, slamming against your chest. He chewed slowly and his bloody red eyes slowly went wide.
A hush fell over the grand hall.
Then the King did something he didn’t do with any other meal, he went back for a second bite.
After that bite, he peered down at you for a long, long time.
“Is this all you can cook?” His voice broke over you like thunder. You shook your head, your hands curled up nervously
“No, my lord. I have created meals for kings and I can cook many things. Meat of all kinds. And bread, vegetables and so on.” You wished you were a more eloquent man, but that had never been needed before.
Not to mention such an education was beyond your reach.
And your food alway did the talking for you.
The king took a third bite then tossed the rest to the hellhound, the animal eating in a single swipe of its tongue. The tail wagged once, thumping on the floor.
The Wealthy One nodded slowly. “You may start today.”
~
The kitchen size alone would have made your mama weep with joy. The amount of fresh produce, herbs and clean grains along with plenty of meat made your jaw drop.
You clapped your hand together in thought then…You hit the ground running.
There was an endless list of tasks to be done before the kitchen would be ready to open and you went through all the tasks with horse blinders on, determination fueling you.
The first meal you officially served Master was a few of salted and peppered trout with a garlic lemon sauce with butter and herbs along with a hearty lentils soup, warm sourdough bread for the soup and sauce.
You added a fresh cucumber salad along with a large plate filled with cheeses and fruits that would compliment the fish.
When the plates came back, clean of even a drop of sauce, you felt something loosen in your chest.
~
Eventually you began to learn the house's routine and the many shades. You learned to always have some type of bread readied with olive oil.
You learned what went fast and what you had to jazz up to get rid of.
The most important lesson you had learned in life and one that remained unchanged even now was that most souls just wanted something that tasted like home.
It was toward the end of the kitchen hours when you heard someone take a seat.
Even at this late hour and working alone, you weren’t one to turn away a hungry soul so after wiping your hands on your apron, you turned with a smile.
“Welcome! What can I…” your words trailed off, your eyes going wide as you realized who was sitting in one of the barstools.
The Prince of the underworld gave you an exhausted, crooked grin. There was a curious gleam in those mismatched eyes, the strong lines of his cheeks softened by the dim lights of the lounge.
He was inhumanly beautiful in the ways all divine beings were.
But there was something different to his handsomeness.
Unlike the soft loveliness of Sleep, the sleek grace of the Fury or the dark shocking beauty of Night herself, this god before looked almost moral like. It was his eyes that revealed his godhood. It was the power in his broad shoulders.
You were surprised by how much you liked it.
“So you are the new cook everyone is raving about.” The Prince said, leaning on his forearms to peer at you. You saw the strength in his arms, his quick grace as he moved. Strong and muscular with thick tendons upward from the knuckles.
It was clear this god was a warrior of a sort.
Your eyes flickered down in embarrassment when you realized you were being disrespectful in your staring.
“I believe so, your highness.” You said, bowing your head in a show of respect for his position. “How may I serve you?”
“Honestly?” The Prince leaned, scanning the area behind you. “Whatever you have will work. The last cook we had working here would just give us sliced onions if we came in this late. Once he gave Hypnos a single apple peel for daring to ask for something else.”
He sounded amused, chuckling to himself at the memory. It was a nice laugh, deep and rich.
You couldn’t imagine being so rude to the gods. Your mom was a pious woman and even a quiet sigh during prayers would get you a disapproving look.
With a nod, you went to get the Prince his meal and drink.
Thankfully you had a leftover trout and tossed one onto the grill to cook as you prepared a bowl of cabbage for him, added in spices along with honey vinegar and silphium.
You had some bread and garlic cheese so you plated those as well with olives and grapes.
You decided to give him a rich red that most enjoyed, filling it up to the brim.
“Oh wow.” The prince muttered as you set everything in front of him and with a bow, you rushed back to the fish, flipping it over. Once it was ready with some garlic butter sauce, you brought it to him.
“Please let me know if you would like for me to serve you more or cook something else for you.” You told him and the prince blinked at you, his mouth filled with bread and cheese.
The prince waved a hand before you left him for his meal. He drank the wine deeply before placing it back down. You immediately refilled it. “This is plenty, my good shade. Thank you.”
With a respectful nod, you resumed cleaning up the kitchen. Counters got wiped down, supplies restocked but it wasn’t the usual relaxing routine it normally was.
You felt the weight of those divine eyes on you. The Prince was quiet as he ate but you caught quick glimpses of his curious gaze on the shine of the plates, or reflection in your knives.
It was only when the Prince left that you let yourself breathe.
~
Master liked large meals but only if they could be eaten quickly. The only thing you had been warned never to add was pomegranates. No one would tell you why.
The Gorgon, the creature was surprisingly sweet for all the horrible tales you heard of her kind, ate in a rush as well.
If you were smarter, maybe you could have made a clever joke about how the lowest server and the King of the Underworld ate the same way.
But one look into her smiling face held your tongue. She was always kind so you would be so in return.
The Fury was a regular companion of hers, requesting simple meals of fish and some types of roasted vegetables. Mostly she would drink deeply, often you would have a pitcher of wine put aside for her.
Sometimes Dreaded Death would join her, unwelcoming to all and cool. He rarely ordered any food, his fingers drumming on the table sounded like funeral marches to your ears.
His twin was the complete opposite, Gentle Sleep had a sweet tooth unlike anything else you have seen. Often he would ignore the dinner option altogether and eat slices of cake, candied figs or honeycombs.
If you weren’t careful around the god, plates of cookies that were meant for the whole house would go missing around him.
You still haven’t found the last two plates he stole from you.
And...
There was The Prince himself.
He was a regular now, always sitting close to wherever your work station was that day. He also was the only one who ate anything you put on a plate for him, and would shove the meal into his mouth like a starving creature. You always made sure to give him larger servings.
“Tell me your name.” He ordered you one day. His tone was deep, firm. Making it clear he wouldn’t take no for an answer. “You keep feeding me delicious food, no matter the hour. And I don't know what to call you.”
Then he added with raised eyebrows, sounding more like a playful suitor than a Chthonic god. “Please?”
You considered it, your hands still on the bowl of the hardy stew just placed before the god. You stared at the stew for a moment, then at him.
Or just past him, not willing to meet the god’s eyes, life and death danced in those unusual eyes of his.
You were a moral, a simple one at that.
You never picked up a sword, never learned all the fancy learnings that a prince might, never learned much beyond what you needed to but you knew names had powers, could decide whole destinies before a babe even wailed out their first cry.
Names could summon the gods themselves.
Quietly, you told him.
The prince grinned at you, his smile fierce and beautiful like a victorious lion. Your breath hitched, forgetting that one was to never look the gods in the eye.
Then the next words he spoke early jumped started your heart into beating once more.
“It suits you, my good cook. Call me Zagreus.”
~
Later, alone in the kitchen, recipes laid in front of you, you tried to will yourself to focus.
Schooling was too costly for your family especially after your Mother’s death. Your reading went far as basic words and numbers, just enough to get by in the markets.
You never needed much.
Right now, however, the recipes might as well be another language.
You were too lost in thought, several times you had already caught yourself even daring to think The Prince’s name in your mind.
What would happen if you dare to…
Zagreus.
A soft noise came behind you and You whirled around, glancing everywhere as if expecting him to appear right behind you.
He didn’t.
You realized you heard the sounds of the Wretched Broker restocking his shelves. Thankfully, he was too busy to realize that the House’s cook had gone mad simply by learning a God’s name.
Maybe you should start wearing a pot on your head.
“Zagreus.” You whispered, fingernails digging your palm nervously. “Zagreus.”
When the god didn’t appear, you didn’t know if you were disappointed or relieved.
~
Slowly, you learned more.
There were the loud fights between Father and Son that would cause the house to rattle. Many shades would escape into the lounge, hands over their ears.
”Tell me, do you get along with your father?” Zagreus grumbled, his plate cleared of any crumbs. His legs were bouncing, filled with an endless energy you knew you would never be able to match.
“No.” You said, not wanting to think of that man. You knew he was somewhere in the underworld but the less you knew, the better. “I suspect few do.”
Once, over a glass of white wine and a simple meal of sourdough bread and warm vegetable soup, He told you was looking for his mother.
“You will find her. I know you will.” You told him quietly, holding his stare. “Have faith, Zagreus.”
Another time, over a cake from a new recipe you came up with, Zagreus asked about you. Maybe it was the exhaustion after a successful dinner rush but you told him everything.
His smile was warm, his eyes watchful of your every move as you told him of your family and their new place you brought for them.
Your cheeks flushed when you realized he was staring at you.
“I will have to stop by then.” He teased, his hand almost brushing against yours.
“Yes.” You agreed in a whisper, your mouth suddenly dry.
~
“Cook me your favorite meal.” Zagreus ordered one day, not even bothering to sit down. You lifted a cool eyebrow, well used to his impulsiveness by now.
“Hello, Zagreus.” You greeted dryly, wiping your hands on your apron, not actually that upset.
Not too long ago, you would have wilted from the thought of being so playful with a divine creature but things changed.
Zagreus brought it out of you somehow simply by being himself.
“I am doing well, thank you.” You continued to teased despite his oddly serious expression.
Zagreus blinked, then chuckled with a bright grin. “I am a horrible influence on you, I fear.”
You laughed, cheeks flushing at his smile. “I am afraid so, your Highness. Now what is this about a favorite meal?”
“Yours. I want to know what your favorite food is.”
“Oh.” You grabbed an apple, rolling it in your hands for something to do. Butterflies dancing in your stomach as Zagreus leaned in, his hands on the counter. This close, you caught the scent of copper.
unwillingly, your gaze tangled with his, caught like a fly in a complex web. A stray thought reached you, could a mere fly understand the geometric structure, beauty of such things?
You swallowed nervously. “It’s nothing special, Zagreus. Just something my mom cooked up for me.”
Zagreus narrowed his eyes, his jaw firm in his resolve. “Excellent, then. I trust you have all the ingredients you need?”
You nodded but opened your mouth to dissuade the prince from his idea, however he was already walking away, “I expect a meal to be waiting for me when I get back!”
~
One day, staring at a wooden spoon in your hand, cake batter dipping from the tip, you realized that Zagreus had became someone very, very dear to you.
Morals and gods didn't mix together well. At least, not for the morals. Cracked eggs and spilled milk and all left would be a big mess with no one to clean it.
What did it mean when a shade, a mere ghost of who you were, was in love with a god that shone like the sun, whose very presence made you felt like you were alive once more?
~
When Zagreus returned, his hair was still damp from the Styx river and you had to look away from his beauty.
Quietly, you put the final touches on your favorite meal. You swallowed nervously as you picked up the plate and went over to him.
Thin layers of dough. Creamy cheese. Crushed nuts. Honey.
A long ago memory of your mom's smiling face as she watched you take a bite. Sunlight made her golden and immortal in that singular moment in your very heart.
You offered it up like the cake was a sacrifice, like you were offering yourself up to the god to make the final decision of the worth of your mortal soul.
“This is the first thing I can remember my mom making for me.” You whispered, your work rough fingers curled nervously against the counter. “This meal is what got me a job here. I got to know you because of this cake.”
Zagreus took a small bite, then closed his eyes in bliss. He said your name with a weight that you never heard before.
When he looked at you, his expression gentle and hopelessly fond, there was no need for more words.
~
When he kissed you for the first time, he tasted like home.

Donnie and Mikey are in the kitchen set, they're both in chef's uniform. Though Donnie has his AR glasses on, they offered Mikey a pair, but he declined because 'it would distract him from cooking'.
They're making 'Summer Snacks with some science'.
Donnie grabs an odd looking device and sets it up while the audience is questioning what it is. Mikey has returned with salt, cream, a few random labeled canisters, and a cooler.
"Okay, so now we're going to show you some easy ways to make your own icecream. Though results may vary, this is how we make it." Donnie explains while pulling a few pint sized tubes from inside the machine.
"Oooohh, there's so many possible flavors to make!" Mikey gushes while placing down ingredients, "I want to try mixing up this one flavor I saw pop up in my feed. What was the mixture again?" Mikey pulls out his phone to look up the recipe.
"While you do that, I will start with a sorbet recipe, and see how if it sets properly. We haven't messed with sorbet as much, I don't think it's too different, but it's for food science!" Donnie exclaimed as he grabs a food processor type gadget. He has a projection of a recipe floating next to him. "Okay, so depending on which recipe, this either needs sugar, or syrup, fruit puree or juice... it's almost just a more complex juice pop than something like icecream."
"I think I found the one I saw earlier!" Mikey announces while holding his phone in the air. "Alright, so we just need to make a vanilla base, and add a few extra things. Though we need to substitute a couple ingredients in this one."
"It has nuts in it?" Donnie questions while tossing some cut up fruit into the food processor.
"It has nuts in it." Mikey confirmed, "I wonder if I could switch it for sunflower seeds, or would it mess up the taste?" He asked out loud while looking over the ingredients they have prepared.
"Well these will just be small batches, so just test it out. If it doesn't work, Red will still eat it. Since it shouldn't trigger his nut allergies." Donnie replies back while measuring out the sugar to add to the sorbet mixture.
Mikey nods his head, then starts grabbing what he needs to make the vanilla ice cream base for his mix.
Donnie then cleared his throat, "Now for those who have been asking, this device is a custom built Ice Cream Maker, that makes multiple small batches at once. You put the mixture into these tubes, and they go inside the machine where it gets a bit tumbled and mixes while being super chilled." Donnie has some videos demonstrating how the machine works pop up while he explains this.
"It's very handy for when we all can't agree on which flavor we want to make. Or we want to mess around with multiple flavors." Mikey adds while mixing together the cream, milk, sugar, some salt, and some fresh-ish vanilla bean.
The audience watched as the two mix together several ice cream mixtures that get put into the Ice Cream maker, and a few Sorbet mixes get put into the freezer.
"While those get mixed and set, let's use the rest of this fruit to make some refreshing drink mixes!" Mikey shouts while Donnie cleans up some of the work area.
"Let's hope we still have some of that delicious melon left. Because you're still banned from that farmers market right?" Donnie asks nonchalantly with a small smug look.
Mikey freezes before turning towards Donnie with a harsh glare, "You know good and well, that it was not my fault! He wanted $50 for a small bag of citrus fruits, that were $10 at most at a different stall." He says with a slight growl.
"Well you didn't need to beat him up over it."
"He said my culinary skills were worse than prison quality! Prison Quality! He deserved to be sent to the worst prison in the world for that!!!" Mikey yells, shocking the audience.
The audience are spamming the chat with lots of confused messages and emojis combinations.
"I would question why he insulted your cooking, but I don't want to get on Dr. Delicate Touch's bad side." Donnie says, "Do we have any club soda left, of do we need to send Blue to get more?" They add to try redirect the subject, and not get something thrown at him for bringing up the topic in the first place.
The continue on with testing out drinks, until the timer went off to check on the ice cream. The audience split on wanting to know more about Mikey getting banned from a farmers market, and wanting to talk about what the duo was making during the stream.

Excerpt from this story from Earth Island Journal:
KOCHKOR KALDARBAEV REMEMBERS the forest of his childhood. It’s dense, with thickets of tall grass and brambles that make walking in a straight line impossible. Trees come in all shapes and sizes: spindly youngsters, stately elders, tiny seedlings peeking up through the forest floor. They come in all varieties, too, from hawthorn and maple to fruit-bearing trees like apple, pistachio, and plum. And everywhere you look, there’s the walnut: wide, smooth trunks branching off into bushy green canopies, with clusters of round fruits waiting to be cracked open to get at the creamy nut inside.
Kaldarbaev was born and raised in the village of Arslanbob in the mountains of southern Kyrgyzstan, a Central Asian nation home to the world’s largest natural-growth walnut forest. Today the forest covers some 50 square miles of a fertile valley of the Tian Shan Mountain range, which stretches from Uzbekistan in the west to China and Mongolia in the east.
His father spent 40 years working for the then-Soviet government as a forestry officer tasked with keeping the forest healthy and managing how people used it — which then, as now, mostly involved harvesting walnuts, the region’s main source of income and a key ingredient of the local culture and traditions.
For centuries, every fall, the residents of Arslanbob and other villages dotting these mountains have left their homes and camped out in the dense forest, spending weeks shaking down the ripe nuts from the trees and collecting them by hand. Usually, this is an all-hands-on-deck job for entire families, including children. During harvest season, the walnuts make their way from local markets in the nearby city of Jalal-Abad to Europe and Asia, mostly along trade routes that once comprised the Silk Road.
But by 2012, Kaldarbaev could walk through the forest understory with relative ease. The thick undergrowth was mostly gone, as were the smaller, more immature trees, says the 51-year-old who followed in his father’s footsteps and became a government forester. Only the tall trunks of mature walnuts remained standing, spaced oddly far apart.
A similar fate afflicts much of Kyrgyzstan’s forests, which make up only about 6.2 percent of the country’s land area but are rich in biodiversity. Between 2001 and 2022, the mountainous nation lost 2,470 hectares (6,100 acres) of forest cover, mainly to deforestation, overgrazing, and desertification. In recent years, climate change and development have added to the pressures facing these forests, putting rare species like Malus niedzwetzkyana, or Niedzwetzky’s apple, and Pyrus korshinskyi, or Kazak plum, and Arslanbob’s iconic walnuts at risk.
This is bad news, not only for the villagers who depend on these natural fruit forests, but for the rest of the world as well. Many of the widely- loved varieties of fruits and nuts that we enjoy today — including apples, almonds, pistachios, pomegranates, plums, apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, and, walnuts — originated from the wild species found in Arslanbob and other temperate montane forests of this region of Central Asia. At a time when domesticated strains of many of these trees are becoming increasingly susceptible to disease, these forests of crop wild relatives are a valuable genetic resource that could be critical for food security in the future.

Harmful effects of Packaged foods
Packaged foods often contain high levels of added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium, which can contribute to a range of health issues, including obesity, heart disease, and hypertension. Additionally, many packaged items are loaded with preservatives and artificial additives that can disrupt metabolic processes and gut health.
• High in Added Sugars: Often contain excessive sugars, leading to weight gain and increased risk of diabetes.
• Excess Sodium: High sodium levels can contribute to hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.
• Unhealthy Fats: Trans fats and saturated fats found in many packaged foods can raise bad cholesterol levels.
• Preservatives and Additives: Many contain artificial preservatives and additives that may disrupt gut health and metabolic processes.
• Low Nutritional Value: Often lack essential nutrients, leading to potential deficiencies.
Since there is a huge market of packaged food, we know that we cannot truly eliminate it so what to do?
We can do the following in order to balance between healthy and packaged foods:
Read Labels: By reading labels one will know what he’s actually consuming, choose packaged foods with minimal ingredients, low added sugars, and healthy fats. Look for whole-food ingredients.
Prioritise Whole Foods: Make whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins the foundation of your diet.
Limit Processed Snacks: Replace unhealthy snacks with healthier alternatives like nuts, yogurt, or homemade snacks.
Practice Portion Control: when consuming packaged foods, watch portion sizes to avoid overeating.
What can we as a society do to reduce the consumption of ‘unhealthy processed foods’ ?Here are some strategies :
Education and Awareness-Promote nutrition education that emphasizes the benefits of whole foods and the drawbacks of highly processed options. Mindful Shopping: Encourage consumers to create shopping lists focused on whole ingredients and limit impulse buys of packaged foods. Support local farmers' markets and community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs to provide access to fresh produce. Label Transparency: Advocate for clearer labeling on packaged foods, making it easier for consumers to make informed choices. Set Goals: Encourage individuals to set personal goals for reducing packaged food consumption, tracking their progress to stay motivated.
By implementing these strategies, consumers can make more conscious choices and reduce their reliance on packaged foods.
In the end- Over time, regular consumption of packaged foods can result in nutrient deficiencies, increased cravings for unhealthy options, and a higher risk of chronic diseases, thus MINDFUL EATING and BALANCED LIFESTYLE is important to keep a balanced life where there are cheat days, and healthy meals too.

Rancher!Harry x Plus-sized!OC
🦋Delaney🦋
All week felt like a whirlwind of chaos. I barely found time to sit down and have dinner with my family; the only time I saw Harry was to deliver his food before calling it a night, and I couldn't help but feel disappointed with the lack of his presence in my day. I looked forward to our interactions; even if they were frustrating. Now the best I got was sneaking glances at him over my hands full of baking dishes as he took care of our animals.
I was currently on my way with Wren to deliver the fresh baked goods to the market stand, along with fresh bottles of milk.
"I feel like my arms are going to fall off. What is in these things?" Wrenlynn groaned, my eyes widening as I called out, "Careful! Don't drop them!" watching her shuffle around my freshly baked pies.
"They're fruit pies! They'll make us good money, don't you dare drop them!"
"Jesus christ, do they have bricks in them?" She huffed, my arms shifting the bucket of cookies and bars to my left hip so I could quickly open the door for her.
"No, you just have like 6 pies" I laughed, Wren glaring before quickening her pace to our market table.
"Wonderful! You're just in time! We just sold our last apple crumble bar!" Mimi grinned, my eyes falling on the empty spot at the table.
"I've got a few fruit pies: Strawberry, blueberry, banana cream" I listed, Wrenlynn happily setting down the baked goods as Mimi and I rushed out a reminder to be careful, "In here are some Oatmeal Raisin, Chocolate Chip, and White Academia Nut with Cranberries" I set down the large closed totes.
"Yum!" Mimi hummed, glancing at the fresh goods, popping open a container to take a whiff of the freshly baked goods.
"I have more of the apple bars; dad hasn't scarfed them all yet" I giggled, "And the lemon bars that Mrs. Housley requested. Her name is on them. Remind her they're five dollars a tote" I gave Mimi a stern look, knowing she's prone to giving frequent customers discounts.
It's not like I want to be a bitch, but we need all the money we can get. We need to order more dog food soon and I just wanted to make sure we were covered.
"This is wonderful Delaney! We should be good for the weekend. Have you found the ingredients for my famous cherry and pineapple pie?" Mimi asked, my nose wrinkling, making her laugh.
She knows how much I hate that pie.
"If you want that pie, you're making it. I won't be caught dead having my name attached to that" I scoffed.
Back at the ranch, a smile tugged at my lips as Harry turned around from the sound of the truck tires on the dirt road, only to drop when he looked away.
I sighed, licking my lips before rolling them inwards, Wren snickering next to me.
"Why don't you make a move? Worst he says is no"
My nostrils flared as I looked over at her, "No? That's the worst he can say? Clearly you've never talked to that man!"
"Laney-"
"No! He lives here Wren! I have to bring him dinner every night! I can't just knock on his door and be like 'Hey Harry, I like you. Would you like to go out sometime?' He'll kill me! You will no longer have a twin, Wren! I'll be horse food!" I freaked, hopping out of the truck, slamming the door shut before she could reply; my feet quickly carried me towards the main house, empty totes in hand when I noticed Harry was struggling to corral the sheep.
Brow furrowed, I walked over towards him, looking for the Aussies who were supposed to help him.
"Hey!" I called out, loud enough to make his head turn, "Where are the dogs? They'll do it" I asked, looking around for Milo and Daphine
Harry ignored me, shutting the gate behind him.
Is he serious?
I eventually found the dogs, bringing them out to the pen so they could do their job. Right as I opened the gate, letting them run in, Harry yelled, "I don't need their help!", sneering at me as I shut the gate behind me.
"You looked like you were struggling" I replied, "They can help you. It's their job"
"I'm perfectly fine on my own!" He glared, stomping over to me with his biceps flexing; completely distracting me as I watched his clothing tighten around his arms.
I wanted so badly to be held by those arms. To feel safe and secure in his hold. To lay my bed on his chest and hear his heartbeat. Or look up at him and have our eyes meet before he leaned down, kissing the top of my head.
Everything about him screamed comfort protector; even when he was acting like an asshole.
"Yeah, looked like you really had it handled" I sarcastically replied, tired of him not letting our pets work.
They're on the farm. They have jobs. They're here to help. Let them!
Every time I spot Harry working, there is no dog in sight. It's like they're dodging him completely. Like even the dogs know messing with Harry always ends in disaster.
"I don't need no damn dog to help me on the farm! I've done it by myself for years!" He continued to argue, completely unaware of all the hard work the Aussies were doing right behind him.
I motioned for him to turn around, Harry's jaw clenched as he turned; ready to explode at any moment.
"See. They help. All you have to do is open that gate. Why are you so stubborn about this? They're here to make your job easier; plus they love what they do!" I grinned, really wanting to shove an I told you so in his face. "And they love the meal and warm house they sleep in each night after a job well done" I reminded him, struggling to hold back the smirk my lips wanted so desperately to show, only for it to be completely wiped off my face as the ticking time bomb finally hit it's clicker.
"What's the point of working here, if these fucking dogs are just going to do my damn job?!" He snapped.
"They're literally making your job easier" I stated, "I don't understand why you're so peeved about a canine's help? Shouldn't you be glad you're not spending an hour moving sheep?"
"I don't want easier! I want my damn job" he sneered, his entire body looking like he was going to explode right in front of me. I swear I could see his forearm veins quivering. "At least at the Rickman's I knew I wouldn't lose my fucking job to some damn dog who won't live for more than what, 6 years?" He hissed, my brow furrowing.
Is he serious? 6 years? Herding dogs live 10-14 years depending on health issues.
I wanted so badly to say, "Then fucking go then!" and just get rid of all the drama in my life, but I knew how much I— we needed him. As frustrating as it was, he was getting things done around here, allowing my dad to do odd jobs in town, earning us all extra cash that was much needed.
"You have a job! You're the ranch hand, and a damn good one at that; remember? The dogs are a part of this farm. We love them. They love us, and they work just as hard as you do, if not harder! Accept help, Harry! We help each other on this farm! I don't know what the Rickman's made you do every day, but here we do things together. We work together. Whether you walk on two legs, or four paws, we work together. They had their job first, but that doesn't mean they're replacing you—"
"I can't earn my goddamn keep if I'm losing my work to some fucking animal" He interrupted.
I could feel my breathing becoming more rushed as I started to notice the quick spiral that was Harry Styles Emotional Tornado.
"Okay! Okay!" I rushed, "Listen, please" I begged, noticing the familiar look of his temptation to turn around and leave us in his dust. "Herding dogs. The Aussies and Borders; they have jobs on the farm. They are also quote unquote earning their keep. They help us, the humans, make our job easier. They get to run around and chase the cattle and sheep for us. So we're less tired during the day and because they move quicker than us. The perk of them is that they're helpful with quickening the task. They're not only helping us, but they have fun doing it. It's their job. They love it and when they're done, they retire. They work as long as they love doing it, and whenever they start to show lack of interest or are getting old, they retire. You're not being replaced, Harry. They're here to help you; not replace you. Let them help you." I urged, hoping to see some leeway, only to sigh and continue. Might as well list some perks the dogs get out of doing their jobs. "It gives them good exercise. Keeps them healthy. It tires them out physically and mentally making them better behaved in the house. It gives them purpose. They strive for a job well done just like you do. They want to make us happy. To do a good job; just like you. Am I wrong?" I asked, Harry's head shaking briefly. "You're both similar, Harry. You want to achieve the same thing and believe it or, you could both sleep in the main house but one of you decided not to. Why is that, Harry?" I asked, praying he wasn't fed up and decided to flee right in front of my eyes again.
"Why is what?" He questioned, frustrating me.
Does he ever listen to me?
"We need to go close the gate. They're done" I noted, Harry looking over his shoulder before turning to leave, me hot on his heels as I continued; "And why won't you sleep in the main house? You act like you've been banned to the so called rabbit shack, and you act like it's some sort of punishment when it's what you wanted! Everything you have an issue with you wanted!"
Harry stayed quiet, locking the gate as the dogs ran over to me with their tongues hanging out of their mouths. I praised them, petting them and cooing before they ran off towards the barn; Harry walked past me without saying a word. My eyes lingered on his tone back covered by a tight tan t-shirt; trailing down to his jeans, unknowingly chewing on my lower lip as I lingered on the back of his jean pockets; watching him walk away.
The things I'd do to see that man's—
"Laney!" Wren yelled, my body jumping.
'What?!"
"Mom needs your help!" God damnit. "And Harry's!" She chimed, a gleeful tone to her voice telling me she knows damn well what she's doing.
"Harry's? Why does she need both of us?" I asked, Wrenlynn shrugging. "Can you ask Harry? I'm pretty sure he hates me" I huffed/pleaded.
"No can do, Laney! I'm off to meet up with Dylan" She grinned, showing me the truck keys in her hand.
Dylan was Wrenlynn's wannabe boyfriend and she knew that; milking him of everything he was worth. It sounded bad, but she made it clear they were just friends, so as painful as I assumed that is for him to deal with, he decided it was better than being nothing. Now they hang out all the time and I'm convinced that he's just trying to woo her slowly; Wren falling for his obvious trap, getting free dinners and gifts along with it.
Harry and I walked into the garden, my mom now on the opposite side of the fertilized patches; one of the black and white bunnies hopping around, munching on the scrapes that were being tossed to her.
"You needed us?" I spoke, making her aware of our arrival; my mom's head snapping up as she nodded.
"Yes! Lane, I need you to take these to Grandma so she has them for dinner, and Harry, I wanted to ask if there was anything you wanted planted? Anything you like having fresh?" Mom started, picking up a bin of harvested fruits and veggies, holding it up for me to take before shooing me away.
"No Ma'am, I'm okay" He replied as I grabbed the bin.
"It's no problem, truly! This is your home, Harry. We all have our things. Lane likes the lemon tree; my mom loves her carrots and strawberries. Matt loves the raspberries. I want you to have things you like in here. You sure there isn't anything?" Mom asked again, Harry's lips parting before closing again, shaking his head. "Alright, well, if you think of anything, let me know. I need to start prepping for our next big planting. Some of these plants have seen better days" She huffed, scooping up the bunny who had crawled into the bed of strawberries. "Oh! Harry, can you wash this out for me?" Mom asked, grabbing a bucket that had leftover soil in it, tapping it out over the dirt before handing it to him; "Then bring it back. I want to put scraps for the bunnies in here" Harry nodded, grabbing the bin. "Delaney, show him to the kitchen, please"
Harry and I walked down the path to the main house, my fingers turning weight as I struggled to carry the bucket of harvestable.
"Here" Harry stated, handing me the dirty bucket.
I frowned, "I don't want your bucket. My hands are full as it is"
His eyes rolled, grumbling, "Trade me. You're struggling"
"I'm fine" I huffed, shifting the bucket up, almost losing one of the apples.
Harry stopped walking, setting the empty bucket on the ground, reaching over and grabbing the full bucket from me, "Teamwork, right?" He said, not giving me time to reply before hiking the bucket up the porch steps; "This place is a fucking shit show" I heard him mutter as I picked up the empty container.
I frowned, following him.
Why is he constantly insulting the farm? I know it isn't luxurious, but it isn't like it isn't livable, and one can argue that he has the best lodging on the entire farm!
I quickly met up with him in the kitchen, Harry placing the container of harvestable on the counter with a huff.
"That's why I'm so jacked" I teased, turning on the tap, letting it run in the farm sink whilst I grabbed a washcloth.
"You looked like your arms were going to fall off. Do you have an ounce of muscle in you?" He asked, my head tilting.
"Is that a fat joke?" I asked, my heart starting to pick up in pace as my stomach did a whirl of disappointment.
"What? No. I mean—" He fumbled.
My arms crossed under my boobs, "Just because I have extra weight doesn't mean I'm incapable. I was doing just fine before you came in to save the day"
"That isn't what I was saying. Look, I'm sorry—" He tried but my head shook, dismissing him as I pulled the bucket closer to me, grabbing a few of the apples I'll need for later, washing them. "Delaney" He sighed, walking around the kitchen peninsula, hovering behind me as I rinsed out the bucket. "I can do that" he reached for the bucket, my grip tightening on it as I shook my head.
"It's fine" I dismissed, expecting him to give up and go away; only be proved wrong as he turned off the tap, my brow furrowed as I looked over at him, "What are you doing—"
"I'm sorry" He apologized, confusing me even more.
"For?"
"I don't mean to be rude. I'm not used to the change. I'm used to doing everything by myself" He sort've confessed.
The way he said it made it feel like he was telling me some jaw dropping news, as if I haven't picked up on that clue already.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, turning the tap back on, only for Harry to turn it back off. "Harry!" I snapped, turning it back on, Harry yet again turning it off.
"No, listen, please" He begged, shocking me.
So he does have manners.
"I'm waiting" I hummed, Harry nodding, his throat swallowing before his lips parted.
"I wasn't making a fat joke. I was trying to joke in general. I apologize if I unintentionally hurt your feelings. You joked that that's how you got jacked, so I joked back and I can see it didn't land. I apologize" he said, looking, and sounding sincere.
I sighed, setting moms bucket in the base of the sink, "Harry, it's fine. I was slightly pulling your leg. I know I have more flab than muscle. Trust me. I live in this body. I know how it works; and the bucket was heavy. So thank you for taking it, but I carry heavy things all the time. I know people who are fit struggle to understand when someone who has more weight on them says they're comfortable in their body.... but Harry, I'm not looking to be thin. I'm looking to be healthy. Thank you for clearing up the misunderstanding though. Can I uh, ask you something?" I asked, feeling like I needed to tread the waters carefully.
He nodded, turning the tap back on to finish washing out the bucket for my mom.
"Why do you refuse to accept help? I know you've turned away my dad, telling him you've got the jobs. You won't let the dogs help you, even though they're trained to do so, and it's beneficial for them" I commented again, Harry stilling, the washcloth frozen at the bottom of the bucket before he moved again. "We're not the Rickman's Harry" I reminded softly, hoping I don't accidently say the wrong thing.
"If you couldn't do it alone, you weren't worth doing the job and if you didn't do the job, you didn't earn your keep" He stated, scrubbing the bottom of the bucket harshly.
"At the Rickman's?" I questioned, Harry nodding. "What do you mean earn your keep?" I asked, backing into the corner of the counter, my hips resting against the edge.
Harry exhaled through his nose, "You earned things. They weren't given to you" He stated, rinsing out the bucket before grabbing a rag to dry it.
"Earned what?" I pressed, hoping what was popping into my head was incorrect.
"Shelter. Food. Sleep" He listed, setting the bucket on the counter, drying his hands on the rag before placing it back on the rack.
"Harry" I sighed, wishing I could hug him, but I knew my limits, "You were given shelter. You didn't have to earn it. You're always invited to family dinner, you refuse. Why is that?" I questioned, wishing to get as much out of him as I could since he was apparently willing to talk.
"I'm not the family. I'm the employee" He stated, "I need to get this back to your mom and go finish my work for the night. Please bring me my dinner when it's ready" He said, grabbing the bucket and leaving me standing there dumbfounded and sad.
He had to earn his keep.
I knew the Rickman's overworked their employers, but I didn't know he had to quite literally earn the right to sleep.
I could feel my eyes sting with tears at the idea of him being so overworked, and then not being allowed to sleep all because of what, a job not well done?
That evening, my mom scooped Chicken Dumplings into a soup bowl, placing a bread roll on the side of the plate that was sitting underneath before sending me on my way to deliver his food.
I hated this.
I hate walking down this stupid fucking pathway to his rabbit shack of a home with my hands burning from the hot plate or bowl of food all because he didn't want to join us, or well.. I guess doesn't feel like he has the right, no matter how many times he's invited.
I knocked on the blue door, Harry calling out that it was open, my face scrunched as I twisted the knob, walking into what appeared to be an empty living space.
"Harry?" I called out, setting the bowl on the small table.
The bathroom door opened, Harry walking out, sweatpants sitting on his hips as a new black shirt covered his torso. Hair dripping wet, his fingers running through it, shuffling it around a bit before shoving it out of his face as he walked to the table.
God he looked yummy.
I tried to inhale as he got closer, hoping to inhale the scent of whatever he just bathed in, only to just smell my mothers Chicken Dumplings.
Harry sat down, sliding the plate over to him, grabbing the spoon only to look up at me.
"What?" He asked, "Did I forget something? Your dad said it looked good" He said, more so sounding worried rather than confident that he's done for the day.
"No, I uh.. um.. are you sure you don't want to come over for dinner?" I tried again, Harry giving a small nod as he spooned the soup into his mouth. "You're welcomed Harry. You've always been welcomed" I continued, wishing he felt worthy of joining our family.
Harry pulled out his phone, starting to scroll through it, silently dismissing me.
I sighed, leaving his house and walking back down that stupid dirt pathway that led right back to the gray rickety wooden stairs that flexed even more under my feet.
I grabbed my bowl, dishing up my food as my dad and Grandma sat down; my brothers asking my mother something when Mimi asked, "Harry isn't joining us?" I shook my head, grabbing a roll, dishing myself the same way my mom did for Harry.
"Do guys mind if I eat alone tonight? I just want to decompress after today" I asked, my dad and Mimi shaking their heads, Grandma too caught up in whatever my mom had just asked her.
I thanked them, slipping away and walking down the hall towards my bedroom before taking a quick right turn down a hallway, slipping out a back door and quickly walking down the same dirt pathway.
Is this a bad choice? Am I royally fucking up right now? Should I just leave him alone? He didn't seem like he wanted to be around me.
I couldn't help but think about his confession of having to earn his keep. Of not being family; just being an employee.
He was far more than an employee.
I quickly knocked on the door again, having an internal war with myself of if I should make a run for it, the blue door opening, Harry looking confused.
"Did I forget something? I can do it right now" He stated, moving to slip on his shoes.
I quickly shook my head, "No. You're done for tonight" I eased, watching him freeze, looking up from his shoes to me.
"Then... what are you doing here?" He asked, his eyes falling on the same dinner I had just delivered, looking even more confused.
"Do you mind if I join you for dinner?"
* * * *
I'm finally hitting the point in my outline where things start moving hehe

Amidst the throes of the Great Depression, Americans were without many of life’s small pleasures. Ingredients were harder to come by because of sinking wages and work opportunities, so most of the 1930s were characterized by cheap, rationed meals of essential nutrients. In 1938, the popularization of the chocolate chip cookie was a much needed relief for many families craving an easy, inexpensive treat to satisfy children and adults alike. From a supposed happy accident to the icon of the Nestlé company, the history of the chocolate chip cookie reveals how a local favorite has the potential to explode in popularity onto a national level.
The most common tale of the creation of the chocolate chip cookie is attributed to Ruth Wakefield, the owner and operator of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. The story goes that Wakefield had run out of an ingredient (some sources claim it was nuts, others say butter) for her existing ice cream cookie recipe, and in a pinch, she chopped up a chocolate bar and added it to the dough instead. It is said that this last-minute improvisation was so successful that it became a permanent recipe in the kitchen, and soon after gained national fame.(1) However, as is common when exploring the origin of well-known innovations, there were some embellishments to the tale throughout its history. The true story of this delicious creation likely has less to do with coincidence and more to do with baking knowledge and business savvy.
Ruth Wakefield deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the popularization of the chocolate chip cookie, but evidence suggests that when she served them for the first time, similar cookies were already on the market in some places. As early as 1928, newspaper advertisements for a cookie that, for all intents and purposes, resembles the chocolate chip cookie were being circulated, meaning they were a delicacy already being sold in some bakeries and inns.(2) In that period, chocolate was more accessible than ever with cocoa powder on grocery store shelves, so naturally chocolate was slowly finding its place among common baked goods. As the culinary world increasingly embraced chocolate, innovative chefs like Wakefield added it into recipes for existing treats. Though she was not the sole inventor of the chocolate chip cookie, Wakefield’s real story is emblematic of the circumstances of the time, and the process by which the cookie was created.
The Toll House Inn, opened in 1930, was a small restaurant that Ruth Wakefield owned with her husband, Kenneth, which served travelers and locals alike. With her college education as a dietician and experience as a chef, Wakefield’s menu appealed to the masses, especially her hand-crafted desserts. The particular cookie that Wakefield first added “chipped” chocolate to was meant to accompany ice cream, a kind of drop cookie that was a crunchy side dish to compliment the smoothness of ice cream.(3) It is unlikely that the circumstances leading up to Wakefield’s famous “Chocolate Crunch Cookie,” which was published in her 1938 “Tried and True” cookbook, were anything but the result of baking skill and purposeful creation.(4) The simple yet delectable treat was a massive success, and the Toll House Inn boasted the patronage of names like Eleanor Roosevelt and Joe DiMaggio stopping in to try Wakefield’s chocolate chip cookies.(5) The true popularity boom came when Betty Crocker featured the recipe for Toll House chocolate chip cookies on her radio show, giving Americans a twist on a dessert made of inexpensive and widely available goods. In 1939, the Nestlé company acquired the recipe and the Toll House name from the Wakefields in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate and, arbitrarily, one dollar.(6)
The social importance of chocolate chip cookies was concretely verified during the years after the Nestlé deal, as the beginning of World War Two sent Americans overseas by the thousands. Soldiers in other countries craved a piece of home during their time away, and chocolate chip cookies became a staple of care packages sent to Europe and the Pacific Theater. Seeing an opportunity for profit, Nestlé and other chocolate companies ran advertisements encouraging women to bake cookies with what little chocolate was available to send overseas: “for that soldier boy of yours.”(7)
As chocolate chip cookies were being sent abroad, they were cemented into the minds of Americans as something to comfort us in hard times, just as they did during the Great Depression years before. The chocolate chip cookie, with its cheap ingredients, simple baking process, and warm, spirit-lifting sweetness, has defined the tastes of Americans since its creation in the early 20th century. The story of the Toll House Inn is representative of the kind of innovations that Americans were creating in the face of a massive financial depression, and how innovation is sometimes rewarded with national acclaim.

Businesses have found it is far more profitable to work in components with more potential failure modes. Doubly so if in doing this, you render the end-user unable to enact any kind of quick and easy fix.
No, you have to call a certified technician to come out and open the box to look at the thing, only to find out the thing needs a new thing, and the only way to get that new thing is to go through the manufacturer because they are the only ones that make that thing. Sure, you could go to a third-party thing-maker, but odds are good it will be of inferior quality and you will need to replace the thing that much sooner because it has more common failure modes.
Gone are the days of giving people the option to fix things themselves, or just making something that fucking lasts.
Case in point: The Instant Pot.
When the pandemic hit, the Instant Pot was a HUGE SMASH SUCCESS. People were going NUTS over the Instant Pot. Instant Brands (the maker of the Instant Pot) was catapulted into stratospheric profits. Now, they're filing for bankruptcy. What happened? They made the Instant Pot too good. It's too reliable, too affordable, and doesn't have enough failure modes. They are a victim of their own success--especially since they were able to rapidly and easily scale up production to meet demand. They saturated their own market, and without another way for them to generate regular revenue... well... they started to decline.
Other brands came online with their own pressure cookers, eating into market share. I myself bought a Crock Pot brand pressure cooker because it was a bigger size, had more settings, and I liked that the cooking vessel was non-stick. Sales dropped off to a point where Instant Brands could not sustain itself. Because the system has become such that you must keep your customers constantly coming back.
You can't just make a good product and that's it. It would be nice if that were the case. But with how the market works now, I would not be one fucking bit surprised if some asshole techbro brain genius douchebag tries to buy up Instant Brand just to 'update' the technology by making it connect to your phone or some shit... then implement some kind of subscription service to make the business "sustainable".
You watch. Someone somewhere out there will start selling a pressure cooker subscription service like Hello Fresh or whatever. You subscribe, they send you the ingredients, you dump them into the pressure cooker, and it produces a meal. And there will be people who will go fucking nuts for it.
I'm genuinely concerned about the subscription-based food services. I'm sure they work great for some cases, but there has to be a balance. I don't want to lose access to certain products in the grocery store because all these subscription services are consuming everything and the only way I can get a fresh tomato anymore is by paying $99 a month to buy however many meals they're supposed to send me.
I know that might seem a little out there... but considering how many of these services there are and how popular they have become, it has left me wondering.
Anyway, go support your local farmers market, and stop buying a brand new phone every fucking year.

Why Are Cashew Nut Shelling Machines Essential for the Nut Industry
Cashew nut shelling machines have revolutionized the nut processing industry, providing unparalleled efficiency, precision, and scalability. These machines play a crucial role in meeting the growing global demand for cashew nuts by addressing key challenges in traditional processing methods. Additionally, the inclusion of automatic nut sizing machines further enhances the process by ensuring uniformity and precision in the sorting and sizing of cashew nuts, which is essential for packaging and quality control. The combination of shelling and sizing machines allows for streamlined operations, increasing productivity and reducing manual labor. Here, we delve into why cashew nut shelling machines are indispensable for the nut industry.
Enhanced Efficiency and ProductivityManually shelling cashew nuts is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process. Cashew nut shelling machines, like those from GiAgro, significantly reduce the time and effort required by automating the shelling process. A single machine can process thousands of nuts per hour, drastically increasing productivity compared to manual methods.
Improved Nut Quality and YieldTraditional shelling methods often damage the delicate kernels, leading to lower yields and compromised quality. Cashew nut shelling machines from GiAgro are designed to minimize breakage and ensure that the nuts remain intact. This results in higher-grade kernels that fetch premium prices in the market.
Cost-EffectivenessAlthough the initial investment in cashew nut shelling machines can be significant, the long-term cost savings outweigh the expense. By reducing labor costs and minimizing waste, these machines help businesses achieve better profit margins. Additionally, their efficiency ensures quicker returns on investment.
Consistency and PrecisionManual shelling often leads to inconsistent results due to human error. Cashew nut shelling machines, such as those from GiAgro, provide consistent output with precise shelling mechanisms. This uniformity is essential for maintaining quality standards, especially for export markets.
Increased SafetyShelling cashew nuts manually can expose workers to the caustic cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), which can cause skin irritation and other health issues. Automated shelling machines from GiAgro eliminate direct contact with CNSL, ensuring a safer working environment for employees.
Scalability for Growing DemandThe global demand for cashew nuts continues to rise, driven by their health benefits and popularity as a versatile ingredient. Cashew nut shelling machines enable processors to scale their operations efficiently, meeting market demands without compromising on quality or speed.
Eco-Friendly OptionsModern cashew nut shelling machines from GiAgro are designed with sustainability in mind. Many models incorporate energy-efficient features and minimize waste, aligning with the industry's move toward eco-friendly practices.
Conclusion
Cashew nut shelling machines are an essential asset for the nut industry, offering solutions to traditional challenges while paving the way for innovation and growth. By enhancing efficiency, ensuring safety, and maintaining quality, these machines contribute significantly to the industry's success. The addition of a cashew nut grading machine further optimizes the process by categorizing nuts based on size, color, and quality, ensuring that only the best products reach the market. For businesses looking to thrive in the competitive cashew market, investing in a reliable shelling and grading machine is not just an option – it's a necessity.
