Going back to the idea of 141 protecting accused reader
Check CW in tags
Price collects the names of everyone involved. Who accused you, who took you in, questioned you and anyone who laid their hands on you. Although Kate had nothing to do with it, the Americans, those fucking shadows overstepped. The best Kate can hope for is to avoid a charge with aiding in a war crime. Joining Kyle in interviews to find out the specifics. Who was cruelest? Did anyone touch you sexually? Were you starved? Questions they knew would overwhelm you if prompted.
Once Price’s job is done, Kyle starts to collect all the intel with a simple name. Digging into the lives of everyone responsible for breaking you as well as their loved one. It doesn’t take Kyle long to start planting things to make their lives go nuclear. Evidences of affairs that were AI generated sent to the wives waiting back home with their husbands attached with apology letters from the mistress. Insisting that she didn’t know he was married and to please use this as evidence if she chooses to divorce him.
Simon is the judge, the jury and executioner. Most of the shadows steered clear after everything came to the surface that you were truly innocent. That doesn’t stop him from beating them bloody during sparring. Challenging any one of them. Embarrassing them in front of their peers only to catch them off guard later in the night. Carving their skin, taking their fingernails as trophies. Having to refrain from showing you that he was giving you justice in the only way he knew how.
And then there was Johnny….
Sweet Johnny became your primary care taker. Isn’t phased when you need help bathing or going to the bathroom. Johnny who administered your pain medicine around the clock. Who was your advocate about dealing with the doctors and medical staff when you felt too overwhelmed. Who scheduled your medical appointments for your burns, lacerations and the other injuries and illnesses you sustained. Severed ACL. Upper respiratory infection. Kidney infection. UTIs from lack of hygiene items. Never once making you feel embarrassed. Getting you in touch with a therapist.
All of them doing their part to help you in anyway they can. All of them promising to never let you away from them again.

i got into the "putting dungeon meshi characters in my culture/country/city aus" so now they live in the las vegas/henderson area
i am making art for it but for now my ideas
Laios and Falin: like a lot of people living in the Valley, they aren't born and raised there. I would imagine they would be from Minnesota bc I see them as Swedish/Norwegian and a lot of them live there. i was also born in minnesota so i'm super biased.
They'd would have moved there as teens and can't handle the heat very well and WILL question anyone finding the winter temperatures (usually like in the 60s F) as cold.
Marcille: I see her as being born and raised there and somehow not desensitized to the "sins" of the city. She sees the "sins" you see everyday in the more touristy parts of the city and just can't handle it (she is lesbian iykyk).
I imagine she went to one of those private rich people schools in the city. She studies medicine at Nevada State with Falin.
Chilchuck: He sooo moved there as an adult for a job he does not give the vibes of someone who was born there but someone who moved there and thrived. I think he'd prob be involved in housing development bc it's pretty big there.
I have no clue where he would be from, but that's okay he won't tell you 👍 he would sooo hate tourists also it would be so funny he would just avoid certain parts of the city entirely you are NOT seeing the strip if you visit, you're taking your ass there yourself, no local discounts for you.
Senshi: Born and raised there (totally grew up in the old town where the nuclear plant workers lived). I think he'd own a small restaurant in the city, we don't really have food trucks but I think he'd own a small place near the airport. He'd really enjoy talking to tourists and learning things about their cultures.
Izutsumi: She'd be a Japanese immigrant (fun fact the Japanese and Filipinos are the two largest immigrant groups in the Valley) who moved in with Senshi after she left Shuro's group. I think she'd be a typical high school student in the city tbh, those kids are built different.
Kabru: he reeks Californian who moved to Nevada to me (this fact makes chilchuck locals hate him). He'd go to school with Marcille, I think he'd be a psych major fr.

What careers I think the counselors pursued after the quarry.
Most of these are based off the jobs they worked at camp.
Laura - Easy. Veterinary medicine. Specifically I think she’d be more comfortable working at a zoo or a wildlife reserve with tigers or bears (real bears) instead of putting animals down all day.
Max - after not getting accepted into whatever college Laura did, he decided not to pursue college. Or maybe he did, and just took online courses instead so he wouldn’t have to be away from Laura. Either way, he ends up becoming a mechanic.
Jacob - I’m honestly not sure, but he definitely has a sports scholarship. I’m not sure he knew himself what exact career he wanted to pursue during the events of the game, but I could see him becoming a physical therapist or a personal trainer. Maybe both.
Kaitlyn - Gets a degree in business and runs her own. Not sure what type of business, but boy is she running it. She starts small but definitely climbs the latter and becomes a rather impressive business woman (KAITLYN IN A SUIT KAITLYN IN A SUIT)
Ryan - He does end up going to animation school, but halfway through one of his grandparents gets really sick and passed. The other dies of a broken heart less than a year afterwards, so he’s forced to drop out to provide for Sarah. He ends up moving the both of them in with Dylan eventually so can get by. Luckily a small indie studio hires him despite not having a degree and he’s able to make ends meet.
Nick - Culinary arts. My only reference for this is the fact that he works in the kitchen at camp. But it’s fitting. I’d imagine he’d the type of person who can make a really impressive meal out of seemingly nothing. Yelling for runners is also a pretty good way to purge those anger issues of his.
Dylan - Quantum Physics, obviously. I could definitely see him using science theories to try and explain the whole werewolf incident. Eventually I think he’d end up working at a research center trying to figure out nuclear fission. He ends up becoming the breadwinner between him and Ryan.
Abi - She went to art school and dropped out because she didn’t agree with what she was being taught. She ends up doing commissions online with the help of Emma for publicity, eventually she also ends up working with Ryan at the indie studio as a character design artist.
Emma - You can’t tell me this diva isn’t going into theatre. Her dream role is Regina George. She also keeps up her online presence, but goes on hiatus for a bit during college. Ends up as a VA in one of Indie Animation Company ™’s projects and gives them a boost in popularity.

reference sheets for some of my Fallout ocs! may add more of them later, but for now these guys are my main faves :)
Bios under the cut
Baron: A Pre-War pilot in the US Air Force. He met @sawyingthroughthewasteland 's Sole, Sawyer, while at a Navy officer school. After being shot down over Alaska he signed up for an experimental 'super soldier' program and frozen. The freeze was only meant to last one month, but that was before the bombs fell.
200 years later, the Enclave finds him in one of their labs, unfreezes him, and takes him to Raven Rock to perform experiments on him. Then, when Hannah happened to Raven Rock, he fled to the Brotherhood of Steel. 10 years after that, the BoS sends an envoy to the Commonwealth to find out what happened to the Prydwen - turns out, Sawyer happened. Reunited once again, Baron leaves the BoS and marries Sawyer. These days, he pilots for the Minutemen.
Dee: Born to a nuclear physicist and a Nobel prize winning biochemist, three years after being sealed in Vault 76 along with some of the most brilliant minds in America. Unfortunately, as Dee grew it turned out she wasn't brilliant - at least, not compared to her peers, the genius children and prodigies in her Vault classes. Her parents had high hopes for her, even naming her after the Hindu concept of 'dharma,' but she rebelled against expectation at every opportunity. She despised her know-it-all peers, her overbearing family, and the shit attitudes of every privileged asshole in the Vault. The Wasteland and everyone in it turned out to be much more fun.
Hannah: Ever since she was a baby, Hannah was the sweetest person you'd have ever met. (We don't talk about the toddler years.) Her father raised her Christian like her mother, but her innate sense of right and wrong always overpowered her respect for rules, God, or the Overseer - and that got her into trouble. When the Overseer made a poor choice, hurt anyone, or even said anything unkind, Hannah made sure to let him know. Many people saw her as a troublemaker for that reason - especially Butch, who hated that she always tattled on him. But she was the apple of her father's eye, and she was just as intelligent and gifted in both science and medicine as him. This served her well in the Wasteland. She's a pacifist, a paragon of virtue, and yet the Wasteland has done its damnedest to break her. Someday, it'll succeed, but her friends will do their best to delay it.
Pascha: From birth, Pascha was told she was the Chosen One. Her grandmother passed when she was young, but she knew she had big shoes to fill. Luckily, that suited Pascha (or Paz, to her pals) just fine. She always liked the power and respect. That's not to say she didn't do plenty to earn it - she was never one to sit still. She was constantly improving herself, waiting for the day she got to prove that she really was the Chosen One. Once that day came, she was eager to be a hero; but it turned out that while being a legend came naturally, acting like a hero just wasn't her style.
Peggy: Raised in a big family on a brahmin farm near Redding, but a woman with more pre-War sensibilities, Peggy left home shortly after her beloved father was conscripted into the NCRA and sent to the Mojave front. She enlisted to follow him; although she had no combat skills whatsoever, it was discovered that she had a rare and unique skillset that made her an excellent... secretary! She maneuvered to get assigned as Colonel Hsu's personal aide, hoping to leverage her position to get her father sent back home, but her father isn't the only man she ends up caring for.
Snake Eyes: Six isn't sure who she used to be before, but she doesn't particularly care. Fueled by vengeance and greed, Six kills, pays off and betrays whoever she needs to in the service of Mr. House, all in the interest of enjoying the luxury, power and respect that comes with the job. She isn't always proud of what she's done, especially to her friends, but the caps, chems and sex that she's paid in helps keep her numb to herself while the Mojave languishes around her. She goes by Six, but most people call her Snake Eyes, owing to perhaps her one scarred eye, her capacity for betrayal, or maybe her supernatural luck. That said, only the very stupid or the very brave will call her that to her face.

Other Countries in the Squirrel and Hedgehog AUs, Part One, Plus OCs
Chaand Hadia (Moon Gift, Urdu)
Tumblr media
For my AUs, I will have Flower Hill (North Korea) be very close to the country of Chaand Hadia (Moon Gift), located the left of the country. I'm ignoring the distance in between them for now, because this is fiction and I have decided it.
Location and Geography: Shares a border with Flower Hill. Plains, plateaus, mountains, rivers, fertile valleys, and ocean make for varied regions.
The Farmhouse Villa for Lily Bell in the Thorn Thicket most likely takes place a few hours from the border between Flower Hill and Chaand Hadia.
Government: democratic parliamentary federal republic but local cultural rules specific regions.
Economy: The economy is largely based off of herbs, medicines, and dyes, with large exports of textiles. Essential medical compounds are grown in villages around the country or on mountaintops. Herbalists are seen as an essential job, and doctors that travel between small villages and neighboring countries are commonplace.
Flower Hill provides a lot of silk to Chaand Hadia, and receives essential medicines, dyes, and weapon components (in secret) that they may not have been able to grow or find themselves.
Demographics: hog deer, goats, sheep, boars, mongoose, Indian pangolin, striped hyenas, black and brown bears
Culture: Each province has it’s own rules and specific clothing styles based on the standard. Important families carry a detailed pocket compass to identify themselves, although the meanings can vary, and the presence of one can be a coded message.
Foreign Relations: Balanced and outwardly neutral, although getting more and more friendly with Flower Hill. Very friendly with Chambelli Koh.
Relation to Flower Hill: Alongside regular trade, secretly smuggles extra weapons and medicines into Flower Hill, possibly even up to weapons of mass destruction. After all, if Flower Hill falls the the Weasel Unit, their own coastlines will be next. Will not do anything overtly to support their neighbor, though, unless pushed.
Traditional Clothing Style (Not military attire): Shalwar kameez, hijab, Niqab. Clothing used to be more plain until they began acquiring large amounts of silk from Flower Hill.
Tumblr media
OC Character: Soor-Hiran (May appear Briefly)
Tumblr media
Rei-Does-Stuff mentioned the idea of a goat that could smuggle weapons and such into Flower Hill, and to Geumsaegi. I made a joke about the deer I had made in Lily Bell in the Thorn Thicket, who does kind of do that. They responded with the concept of the Pakistani hog-deer, with absolutely no hesitation. Later, they discussed how Pakistan was such a close ally of North Korea, to the point that they smuggled nuclear weapons into the country. Well, that was also a background plot (not a spoiler), and the deer smuggling weapons and poisons may be a larger plot-line in the current AU. So, we got to talking.
As such, I would like to formally dedicate my Hog-Deer Smuggler, Soor-Hiran, to @Rei-Does-Stuff.
Gender: Ambiguous.
Country: Chaand Hadia (Moon gift, Urdu)
Alliance: Chaand Hadia
Attire: Hijab, loose trousers and shirts (Shalwar kameez), but province styles are blended together.
Skills: Herbs, medicine, espionage, deceit, eavesdropping, eidetic memory of mountain paths and plants, and schematics.
Weapon: Poison needles.
Day job: traveling herbalist, doctor. Is allowed to travel between Chaand Hadia and Flower Hill, and works with the commanders in Cherry Valley, as permitted by their own government. Alongside medicines, they bring materials for weapons, schematics, and messages pertaining to Weasel Unit movements and acquisitions. Their village is next to the border of Flower Hill, so it is easy to travel in between.
Works with: markhor goat group of apprentice herbalists and couriers. But they may be more than they seem to be...
Secret Job and backstory: While they will happily accept requests from Flower Hill, Soor-Hiran's group secretly works as a black market smuggler. Other weapons, foods, stolen items, jewels, and information are sold to those willing to pay the price. So far, the Weasel Unit has been unable to afford their cost, but how desperate will they get until they are willing to pay?
Likes: Silk, moths, flowers
Dislikes: being belittled for their culture
Personal Item: Beloved family antique pocket compass/sundial. This specific heirloom allows them free entry into Flower Hill.
Tumblr media
OC Character: Pangulggot
Tumblr media
Gender: Male
Country and Alliance: Chaand Hadia
Attire: loose trousers and shirts (Shalwar kameez)
Skills: medicine, ignoring things that don't apply to him.
Weapon: nothing other than his scales and claws. Is far too mild mannered to fight back if attacked for the most part. His scales prevent him from being harmed.
Day Job: traveling herbalist and medicine worker, bringing important medicinal components to Flower Hill
Works with: markhor goat group of apprentice herbalists, guards, and couriers
Likes: his job, Lily of the Valley flowers
Dislikes: People trying to eat Lily of the Valley Flowers. They are poisonous, but yet...
Backstory: They do very much love their name. However:
Pangulggot is aware that authorities act strangely when they say their name, and tries to hide it, since there is something going on that they probably should not know. Possibly a dangerous individual with the same name, or a military code word…?
Whatever it is, they sure notice that it gets them pulled into empty rooms while going through customs and checkpoints as ‘randomly selected,’ for extra questioning that sure sounds like they contain specific phrases for a specific person he is not.

Joy of Life Episode 12 and 13 liveblogging
This is my first watch, so don't tell me secrets ;)
A lot of sweet romance stuff. These two do have a very warm chemistry together. It already feels like they've known each other awhile. As the viewer you do believe that they like each other very much.
Now that the idiotic forced misunderstanding is over, I can relax my blood feud. Go forth, my children, and be logical!
ML owes his family SO MANY APOLOGIES for the bullshit he put them thru about this idiocy. It bet it's not over, but at least everyone knows who everyone is now
Hmmmm should I be suspicious about this cold medicine?
If FL wants to get out of this mess she's gonna have to work mom a lot better.
hmmmmm on Si Lili's boat, "that monster??" The white garbed swordswomen? Intriguing.
That FL is lucky. You put me in the past and I could plagiarize at least 5 Supernatural novels but I could do NOTHING for tuberculosis.
What trouble is Sil Lili in and how will ML get her out of it?
....guys do u think all this cutsie time at home for assassin bro Teng Zijing is to make it more sad when mom & kid die horribly ?🤔😶
Look I'm not gonna start lying to ya'll, I don't care about that mom & kid's life or death other than intellectual curiosity and plot reasons.
THE BOX IS OPEN. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
It's.... just a dude with bad hair?
A "Level 8 Master", whatever that means. I'm sure it's a very impressive wuxia ranking.
ML's plan is just to return to the country and tbh that's a good plan, I can't argue with facts
Episode 13
Second Prince's cup breaks... Poison, omen, or badly glazed cookware? 🤔
Oh they're traveling down the street where he beat up the Crown Prince's person and now they're reminiscencing about how great meeting each other was. And just a few scenes ago Assassin bro joked about how he'll run away and leave ML in a fight. I am DROWNING IN FORESHADOWING I CAN'T BREATHE
The knives in coat move returns!
Epic wuxia battles. This is where we could really use Uncle Wu
The 2 bros are not gonna abandon each other 😢
The mountain of foreshadowing's prophesy is fulfilled
ML is super upset about his bro and goes wuxia nuclear
"Tell him to wake up." 😭😭 I really thought we had another 10 episodes before he died tragically
No way, kill the Level 8 master. This is dumb, don't leave your enemy alive. Investigate another way.
Ok WAS it the CP.... Or hear me out, was it the Second Prince who set this up to get ML irrevocably on his side?
Second Prince even knows he's my suspect
Si Lili also a suspect tbh. Too bad if so, friendship CANCELLED
(But let's not forget about Princess Royal)
Loser brother and step mom should give him hugs. They're so worried ❤
awwww even the dad is broken up about this
"Tell me about him" -> ok 🍗 girl said exactly the right thing. As much as I hated this ship in the the earlier episodes, the screenwriter is doing a good job with it now. In every scene, you do sense the liking they have for each other
Fan Xian was his family too! I'm gonna cry
LMAO both Crown Prince and Second Prince are exactly the same.
See I told Fan Xian to just kill the Level 8 guy. Now he's being released like we're in fucking Gotham.
Lord Zhu is the actor who just did the emperor on Blossoms in Adversity! (Hello! Sorry you got bug eyes as an acting partner!)
How much do you want to be that whomever plotted this was well aware of the politics angle with Northern Qing?
Ok ok guys guys guys guys I have a solution to this The Killer's Going Free problem! ML needs to ask his poisioner mentor to murderate him - after he's crossed the boundry!
No? You're gonna kill him in public, because the Inspection Board's operations are above the law? O.....kay. I mean I get the angle but tbh I still would have gone with a secret poisoning.

popular opinion: in medieval times (1016 years btw) they barely washed, they used to eat the same five things every day, they were generally miserable, died very early and didn't have any kind of serious medicine. they used religion as witchcraft and they were technology stuck. also, INQUISITION.
reality:
they washed, quite regularly, like any other worker in the country. not only that, they knew there was a correlation between dirt and infections. warriors used to wash themselves and their clothes thoroughly before a battle, because they knew wounds would have a less likely chance to become infected if they didn't come into contact with dirt (they actually boiled their linens).
Europe have always had its large variety of vegetables, we just stopped eating them / grow them / because after the 1400 some of the imported seeds were easier to farm in large quantities in various climates (but we lost most of their knowledge after the 50s). we always had lots of herbs so food did have taste.
they were not miserable, they were simply living. they had a decent work/life balance but it's not like the Roman Empire crumbled and everything become very sad (like, no holidays, free time, food and shelter. you have to remember that the nuclear family is a very young concept. people lived in large numbers, extended families etc. you were never alone and you shared responsibilities and all). they were still regular people with regular lives and regular problems (and honestly, can you look at our world today and saying we don't have to worry about was, famine, drought and pestilence?).
yeah the life expectancy was not the one of today but it wasn't that uncommon to reach 50 o 60. it depended a lot of your job, luck, class, care of yourself, etc.
they did had medicine. not the one of today but you know all those "modern" bio remedies based all on plants etc? yeah, they're old. very old and they could cure some common stuff and hard stuff (I should find that link of a medicine book that there was only one copy of it in England and had the only recipe for curing an eye disease that it's still tricky today).
yeah. no. yes, they were religious in a different way that we are today because religion kind of permeate every aspect of their life. you have to remember that theater was not allowed, but religious reenactment were and you can betcha they went full drama on them (it's actually how the theater got to be reborn). so it was like the cinema of today. they did not fall on their knees praying for God or the Saints to save them at any occasion, they put work towards fixing their problem. not very different than today.
guys, you seriously believe that in 1016 years, with scholars freely running through the lands of Europe (they used to get free passage everywhere), books being copied and shared, big fairs happening regularly with people from near and far countries participating, that there wasn't even a single tiny tiny technological improvement? I'll leave you the wikipedia article for you to read in your own time
guys, if Galileo taught us anything is how they were not so ready to burn people at the first sign of heresy. "heretics" got several warnings and occasions to abjure whatever they were doing and killing them was the last extreme solution (like, refusing to stop following your own cult, preaching to the masses, fortifying your village to resist the besiege from the Church army, etc...). the Spanish inquisition was another thing and it was after the medieval millennium.
I'm not saying it was a peachy period, I'm just saying it was a period and not the worse by a long shot.

Give me a moment to scream into the void, okay?
I have managed a small triumph after being spitting mad for a whole week.
Drug-related pharmacist rant below.
There are a few drugs in this world that carry the label "do not fuck with me" and I happen to specialize in one of the areas of medicine with a gigantic 'do not fuck with me' drug: clozapine.
It's an antipsychotic, and it is more or less one of the biggest guns we have for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. But it is also a drug that needs to be treated with respect. It can do its job, and it can do it really fucking well, but there are trade-offs that require close monitoring in the beginning because if you don't, there are consequences.
This drug means so much business that when you start it, you have to be registered with a monitoring network of the brand of clozapine that you are started on. In the beginning, you need to be monitored for things like myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle, can be fatal), ileus (intestines stop moving, can be fatal), agranulocytosis (white blood cells basically disappear, can be fatal), among a host of other things.
It SOUNDS terrifying, I know, but the risks are low and we monitor patients to ensure that the moment it looks like anything is happening, we intervene IMMEDIATELY.
So imagine my ever-loving shock when I get a heads-up from my hospital that a clozapine patient's been admitted and they're not registered to any monitoring network. I called ALL of them. No one has eyes on this patient. I call the community pharmacy and find out they have failed to do their bare minimum due diligence of making sure the patient is registered and monitored.
Come to find the prescriber is not a psychiatrist, just a generalist.
We are not treating for treatment-resistant schizophrenia or any other severe condition which would necessitate the use of a big gun drug that requires massive amounts of monitoring.
No.
We're treating dementia-related agitation.
Dementia. Related. Agitation.
Who the FUCK prescribes clozapine - CLOZAPINE - for dementia-related agitation????????????????? You guys didn't even try anything before that??????????? There are so many things you could have done before you resorted to the nuclear option!!!!! Literally, you could have tried ANYTHING. There is TONS of information available for non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic recommendations to address agitation before you resort to clozapine, of all drugs. Literally, clozapine has an increased mortality risk in patients with dementia-related psychosis, so like, you have to think real long and hard before choosing this one.
But this random-ass doctor with no specialization in psychiatric medicine went 'nope, fuck it, common sense out the window' and reached for clozapine before he tried anything else.
And then the pharmacy went 'yeah, sure, that's completely normal' and started dispensing the med without making sure the patient was registered and appropriately monitored.
And now they're my patient.
So for a week, I've been trying to get this poor old patient sorted out with any semblance of sense to his medications and monitoring. Community pharmacy been giving me the run around. Prescribing doc is AWOL. The doctors in my hospital understand that you need to treat this drug with the respect that it deserves, so they've been wary to touch it.
Step by fucking step, I've been making headway. First, got the blood work ordered so I could prove to myself and god that SOMEONE was going to do the blood work. Got the drug placed on hold because, come to find, the spouse hasn't even been giving the clozapine as prescribed and was giving such a low, low, low dose that it probably wasn't even having any therapeutic effect - which, unfortunately, means nothing when myocarditis and agranulocytosis are not dose-related conditions. They just fucking happen.
And THEN when a new doctor tried to restart the med, I intervened and went to bat for this patient. Like, NO, you are NOT giving them the nuclear option antipsychotic at such a low dose it will have no effect but will put them at risk for every terrible thing under the sun. It's for AGITATION for god's sake, and the patient isn't even agitated!
So it goes back on hold.
Now, today, I do all my follow-ups and find the community pharmacy fucked off again. The monitoring networks still have not heard of this patient. I decide I'm making a call on this. Enough is enough. Patient has not had the drug in over a week. It's basically gone from his system. There is no sign of agitation to the degree that they require chemical restraints. They got dementia, that's it. Can be addressed in a more reasonable manner.
Call up the doc. Plead my case. He agrees with my assessment, orders clozapine to be discontinued, HALLELUJAH, he'll monitor for agitation and treat with a more appropriate drug, like QUETIAPINE (still not a fave, but gold-plated next to clozapine in this instance). Doc PROMISES to make it clear on the discharge that clozapine was discontinued.
I breathe a sigh of relief I've been holding for a week.
I have accomplished one (1) thing today, and it was worth it.
Moral of the story is: don't fuck with clozapine in my town and let me find out about it. I will hunt your pharmacy down, your doctor down, your family down, your monitoring network down, and I will chew through a fucking brick wall to make sure you stay SAFE and ALIVE.

Crew Profiles Part 2: Doctor Bleddyn Stevens
Ahoy Cosmonauts! First of all, I’m not dead! And neither is this project! Apologies for the radio silence everyone. Mary had a minor issue with the cloak and was trapped in a pocket dimension for a few months. Read: A series of upheaving life events including a total career change and a month spent in the worst place known to mankind: Texas, shudder, meant I was unable to make any progress with Forbidden Space. But I'm back now, and we're hopefully back on track! The pilot still needs some time in the oven, but with some luck we should be able to release it soon. Until then, enjoy the first dive into one of the characters of Forbidden Space.
Who better to start with than the person responsible for maintaining Mary Gillham-32’s most important component: Her crew. Meet Doctor Bleddyn Stevens:
Tumblr media
Art by the excellent @whirligig-girl
Broken bones, radiation poisoning, acute psychological trauma. If suffering from any of these, you can’t go wrong with seeing Mary Gillham’s acerbic, long-suffering Doctor. Stevens is responsible for all aspects of the crew’s health, both physical and mental. It's his job to both patch people up after an away mission gone wrong, and act as rocket therapist, staving off mental ailments from cabin fever to imposter syndrome. And while his dry disposition and devilishly sharp eyebrows have been known to rankle, he brings a steadying level-headedness to all aspects of the job that his crewmates can’t help but find comforting. It doesn't hurt that he also happens to be the one with the keys to the rocket’s psychedelics cabinet.
“Please, I’m your doctor, of course I have the best psychedelics.”
But he’s not just the doctor/therapist. Like everyone in the Mary Gilham program, Stevens pulls double duty. He’s also the rocket’s tactical specialist. Responsible for operating Mary’s all important cloaking device and her variety of torpedoes, ranging from mundane nuclears to the exotic graviton warheads. One of the most destructive weapons in the IUR's arsenal and enough to ensure that size is no object. It's his job to direct space-borne engagements, formulating the battle plans that ensure Mary comes out on top, or at the very least, unscathed.
"Torpedoes will have impacted by now. Deploying periscope, outputting visual to the main… oh… Would you look at that… We’ll have to add a new asteroid belt to the charts…"
While the ability to remain calm in a crisis is a prerequisite for any cosmonaut, it’s even more so for Stevens. The requirement to perform complex neurosurgery one day and fire continent-threatening anti-matter warheads the next needs a very specific disposition. Stevens is calm, analytical, and generally the voice of restraint and consideration in any situation, although often parcelled with a sarcastic thrust his crewmates have learned to put up with. He takes this requirement for coolness and clear-thinking so far he actively refuses to indulge in any kind of mind-altering substances, even for medicinal purposes. A practice his fellow cosmonauts often find baffling to concerning.
"What? But he keeps the biggest variety of recreational drugs I’ve ever seen!" "Apparently for morale only." - Specialists Yureli and Martin on Stevens
Perhaps the most notable thing about Doctor Stevens though, is that he is an almost unprecedentedly strong Psychic Void, an incredibly rare trait that renders him invisible to all but the strongest of psychic phenomena, and incapable of interacting with any psychic technology. While being immune to mind altering phenomena may sound like a boon, it’s an impediment he’s uncharacteristically sensitive about. For one he's unable to use the psychic translator, forcing him to rely on inaccurate machine translations and learning languages the old fashioned way to communicate. Luckily, he’s a prodigal linguist, and is fluent in over a dozen languages, Human and alien.
"You’d be amazed how many languages you can learn without a psychic translator atrophying your brain. Though I admit I do envy it sometimes. Cetacean Auxlang is murder on the throat."
Perhaps the largest issue being a psychic void presents however, is the wedge it drives between him and Mary Gilham-32’s resident psychic, Yvette Martin. To someone whose view of the universe is coloured by psychic impressions, the lack of all empathic feedback makes the doctor come across as cold and unfeeling at best, and at worst, impenetrable and untrustworthy…
"Anyway, she gave me this little Voxyte entertainment device that makes holograms. They look, totally real. You can touch them and interact with them and everything. I mean, it’s just dialogue trees and a basic language model, but they’re totally convincing. Except… I can’t feel them. Their minds. They're like... hollow... That’s what you’re like! uh ex... except, I mean, you’re a real person! Obviously!" " I am? That’s a relief, I was beginning to get concerned." - Martin and Stevens, on holograms.
So there you have it, Doctor Bleddyn Stevens. A steady, reliable cosmonaut who can't be beaten in a crisis. Or a sarcastic prick with a stick up his arse, depending on who you ask and how recently they had their mandatory medical. We'll be doing some more dives into the rest of the cast soon, so watch this space!

Stop portraying Jason’s parents as deadbeats. You’re perpetuating a harmful stereotype without even realizing it.
You don’t have to be a bad person to work for a criminal. You don’t have to be an abusive dad or a petty thug or an alcoholic. Good people, kind people can end up in prison.
You don’t have to be a neglectful mother to end up with a drug addiction. You didn’t choose your addiction over your kid if you die of an overdose.
Picture this. The Todd’s are a middle class, nuclear family living in the suburbs. Both parents are working and they are able to have a comfortable living and save for retirement. Then Catherine gets a cancer diagnosis. In 5 months, the cost of treatments completely destroyed their savings. Catherine loses her job and her health insurance. They have to sell their home and move to a smaller, cheaper apartment in Park Row. The costs of medicine is too high. They have to sell their car. Willis doesn’t have reliable transport to his job. He loses his job. They need money to put food on the table. The only work he can find that pays enough to support his family is working for Two-Face. They can’t afford to see the doctor anymore to get prescriptions for Catherine’s painkillers. The free clinic doctors refuse to give her opioids. She starts using street drugs. Throughout all this, they still try to protect their 9 year old son from the devastating turn their lives have taken. Catherine helps him study for his spelling tests and reads with him every night. She gives him her portion of dinner when his stomach won’t stop growling. Willis teaches Jason to swim on free swim days at the community pool and gives vague answers when Jason asks him what he did at work. They try to hide the bills and the credit card statements and the past due notices until after he falls asleep at night. One night Willis gets arrested. They can’t afford the apartment without his income and get evicted. Catherine and Jason stay at the shelters when they can. Then Catherine gets a dose laced with fentanyl and dies, leaving their 9 year old son to fend for himself on the streets.
Tldr: Being poor is not a moral failing. Just because Jason was homeless when Bruce found him doesn’t mean one or both his parents were shitty parents.
