[MARCH 1ST, 2024] A start to Springtime "why not!?" FIRST post on my blog
Yo!
Daniel or Danny is what you may call me! I am sort of a casual American craftsmanship type of man, turning 30 years old November 7th from waaay back in 1994 talking about Toy Story and Y2K end of it all Lol. Anyway, my blog will be a personal sharing about my occasional findings and health, fitness strength, and improvements of different types, progressing over time in my strange walk of life.
I am just having some Honey Bunches of Oats cereal as a snack as I write this and was just thinking over what basic freedom rights in the United States of America are based off of in my own words after being an observant polite man.
There are 3 points:  1. Your personal side is your responsibility and right to be respected so long as another person does not come out of it hurt and involving the police. 2. Your shared with others side involves what you decide to do with others deliberately and freely as long as another person doesn't get hurt, involving the police. Including publishing things. 3. If you happen to have a problem that is serious with someone: YOU ARE TO FACE THEM IN PERSON to notify them about your personal matter YOU HAVE DECIDED TO CALL YOURSELF IMPORTANT over or just shut up and deal with it because there is absolutely no other reasonable or legal option for you.
I don't know about ya'll but I am grateful for basic freedoms; grateful. Because I am able to see the value that they create as well as a contrast with other less attractive alternatives. So, maybe it cheers you up to. :]
Lately, during this time in my life, I have sort of been living like a farmer and a writer, with financial struggles sometimes, it's been a bit stressful. I like to try to look at the good with the bad, not just the good or just the bad. And I work towards a better way.
Thank you for taking the time to read my very first blog post and have a beautiful rest of your day, Mr. Daniel Frankel over n out

Another day and another realm to be exercised  ..  listen adjust comprehend and execute ..
12:19 AM
But the tragedy of life and the writing of this Blog is the slumber that much like a Beethoven Symphony drives with the intersperse of the soft fluted melody with the harsh heavy instrumental strain of music - almost like the gentle atoms of life which interpret as desire .. and the larger sound of the base and the harsh symbols clashing along with a multitudinous 100 piece orchestra that takes over and drowns the fluted melody - DESTINY ..
Your fluted life , with its softness of all that is desirable is eventually governed and mastered by the heavy thrust of destiny, that converges as an impregnable cage , not permitting or allowing desire to escape and be free ..
The eventual story of all life .. dictated by the sound of music .. the strings the instruments that when plucked , leave a plucked rose just by the stem, as the petals lie strewn on the ground .. to dry to perish, never to be born again - until another plant grows form the earth of life ..
a bit poetic in the early hors of the morning that pulls you ot of the slumber at 5  am and warns you much like those harsh orchestral bearings that many a routine needs attention - the Blog, the connect , to the waiting and exasperated, ever vigilant Ef ..
It is not a compulsion .. it is the destiny of orchestral potent intent that drives the desire to wake up and perform ..
This morning .. no not this one , the one before was a satisfactory outburst of what had collectively been accumulated within and did not get the freedom of escaping the DESTINY caged room, filled with saturated exuberant content .. not one that had  been its ‘impotency’ .. but one that had remained potent enough for a cell to cohabitate with the egg of procreation ..
the pregnancy was potent enough and the receptacle of birth occurred ... the ‘impotency of content’  gathered storm and was sufficient to break the barriers of resentful disconnect .. eventually converging on an emotional breakdown of realisation .. a realisation that who they were dealing with was not a ‘who’ but one that had deeper intent ; unfortunately of no lasting value , for the ‘pre’ had been preoccupied by the ‘others’ ..
the ➡️ moveth and the real of the reality takes precedence ..

Prologue, part 2
BREAKING NEWS Interview with Justice of the Meteor Brigade October 24, 1992
I was lucky enough to catch Justice after the Meteor Brigade’s battle with a mutant bear today, and I kept him long enough to ask for an interview with him about life as a superhero and some questions all of us want to hear answered. You’ve all seen the news lately, and now, it’s time for it to be confirmed. Sitting down in the top floor of an apartment building, I conducted the interview everyone has been waiting for. Here is a sitdown interview with Justice, the leader of the Meteor Brigade.
Interviewer: Good afternoon, Justice. Thank you for agreeing to this interview—really, it’s more of an honor than I could ever express. Is it difficult leading the Meteor Brigade? With all the monsters you have to fight all the time, I imagine it must be tiring.
Justice: It’s not as tiring as you’d think! Really, I enjoy it. I get to hang out with my best buds all the time, and really, it’s great! Keeping you guys out of danger is what we live to do.
Interviewer: I see. I’m glad you all don’t see it as too much of a burden. Have you ever worried you all will fail to defeat the mutant creatures? They look terrifying.
Justice: There have definitely been some times where I was worried things weren’t going to go as planned, but with that sort of thing, you have to keep your head up and act like nothing bad is going on. The team and I all have our superpowers for a reason, and we’re going to use them. We’re here to protect everyone. That’s our responsibility.
Interviewer: Scientists as of lately have done more research on the mutant monsters, and they’ve found connections to meteorites that came from space. The properties in the creatures’ blood seems to match those of the meteorites. Would you happen to know anything about this?
Justice: I do, actually. That’s something Vrain has told us about. Vrain is an alien from outer space, you know. Those meteorites are very powerful, actually. They’re what gave the Meteor Brigade superheroes our superpowers, and they’re also, unfortunately, what’s mutating these creatures. I
Interviewer: A double-edged sword. We were very lucky that you all had your own encounters with the meteorites, or else our city would probably be destroyed.
Justice: I don’t like to imagine that! I’m very grateful that the team and I found the meteorites, too. Protecting you guys may be a full-time job, but it’s very rewarding, and the team has all learned so much since we formed three years ago. Learned enough that I’m able to be here with you answering questions.
Interviewer: It is a privilege. You all have been named public heroes, celebrated in the streets, spoken to schools and at conferences…we’re all very lucky you encountered those meteorites. Do you think the power of those meteorites could be harnessed by other humans like you all? Except for Vrain, of course.
Justice: Well…I don’t doubt it could be…

BREAKING NEWS Billionaire Investments Allow for Anyone to be a Superhero November 29, 1993
Due to recent groundbreaking developments, contributions from a local billionaire and a team of eager scientists have led to a new possibility that will let the Meteor Brigade fight alone no longer— harnessing the power of the mysterious powerful meteorites that gave the Meteor Brigade members their power, scientists have created a way for anyone to become a superhero, no matter who you are.
“It really is an incredible feat,” the man in charge of it all, who chose to remain anonymous, told me when I asked for comment. “Upon the formation of the Meteor Brigade, I was asking myself the question. Why? Where did they come from? Why are they so powerful? I’ve been following the team closely, learning all I can about them, and now I understand. Those mysterious meteorites contain DNA-altering molecules that empower anything they touch, and it works most effectively on humanesque creatures.
That’s the reason why all of these mutant animals keep attacking our city. Those molecules work differently on those animals. They’re not like us humans. And now, any human that wants to be as powerful as a member of the Meteor Brigade can become one at little cost. Anyone can be a superhero! It’s a child’s dream come true.” The billionaire’s dream has already produced results. I’ve seen people jumping abnormally high, super-climbers, and more running around the city. They even help fight against the mutants that try to attack. I watched the Meteor Brigade attack a mutant cat recently with the help of at least five new heroes—they all looked like civilians, but they had super abilities.
I could see that the Meteor Brigade seemed to be faltering a little bit. Understandably, they must be stunned by the new additions to their protection of the city. After the battle, when the large, mutated cat was lying on the ground, defeated, I saw the heroes all descend to flat ground. The new heroes all gave each other high-fives and laughed gleefully, looking very prideful in their assistance with the battle. The Meteor Brigade, however, all huddled together in one big clump, all eyeing the new heroes closely. We haven’t heard much from the Meteor Brigade about the new research and heroes, so I took this opportunity to try to find their thoughts.
I tried to request commentary from Justice after the battle, but, unfortunately, he leapt away from me rapidly after giving me a strange look. I wouldn’t be surprised if soon, every single person in the city has superpowers. Perhaps we all could become a new era of the Meteor Brigade ourselves with these new, incredible abilities, and it’s all thanks to the billionaire and his investments in such a complex field of research. With the new heroes, the world will have even more protection against the strange, mutated creatures that plague our city. Now, any human, regardless of where they came from, can be the hero they dreamed of being when they were a child. Let’s all save the world together, but this time, as superheroes.

BREAKING NEWS President Ruthson, dead! A tragedy befalls the nation. January 1st, 1994.
It is with a heavy heart we must announce the death of our nation’s leader, President John Ruthson. He was murdered last night, at exactly midnight. The new superheroes that had helped the meteor brigade have betrayed us, led by the no longer anonymous Billionaire beneficiary, Lincoln Little.  What's worse, they are being headed by their own leader, who has sought to call himself “Superego.” This real life super villain broke into our office early this morning, and demanded an interview be published, or else our brave reporters would be killed. Viewer’s discretion is advised in the following interview.
Interviewer: So why? Why did you murder the president? Superego: It wasn't a murder. It was an execution. But I will tell you the reason he had to die. I will tell you now. Our goal as the utopians is to usher in well...a utopia. *Chuckles* It's simple, really. The president, and his cabinet, the jury, every secretary, every government worker, and their allies, are standing in the way of that. Interviewer: So you…”executed” them.
Superego: Yes. Interviewer: Just what kind of utopia are you trying to create? Superego: democracy is a sham. It works well enough on a small scale, but on a national level? No. It's too slow, too inefficient. It only serves to stop the natural course of evolution. To put it bluntly, and perhaps in a way that fails to capture its beauty, we seek totalitarianism. One ruler, who knows what to do, what best course of action to take the nation. Now, a normal human has flaws, they make mistakes. But a superhuman? Well- A superhuman would make the perfect leader. If we can just find out how to give one the perfect combination of powers, a perfect leader could be born, and would lead our species into the next step of evolution. Interviewer: (it was at this point i was too horrified to say anything.) Superego: I will be taking my leave then. (I was disturbed at how gently he said these words, almost shamefully)
And with that the interview ended. I will leave you all with one final warning. If you are a politician, seek shelter immediately, the goals of the utopians are no doubt to take over the world, and their first step is the murder of every single goverment worker and politician.
And for everyone else...be safe, and may god be with us all.

BREAKING NEWS Thousands dead! January 27th, 1994
Over the past month, thousands of politicians, government officials, and workers have turned up dead. From small town mayors, to the supreme court. Every official who has worked at the white house is dead, killed by the 10 superhumans who make up the utopians. The meteor brigade has tried to protect them, but unfortunately, they failed to save them. A dark age has descended upon the USA, and other countries are reporting their politicians dead as well. We had no time to conduct a full interview with the meteor brigade, as they are busy protecting who is left, but we did manage to get a few words from justice. “Everyone...everything is looking dark right now. And I know it all seems hopeless, but we are going to get through this. We may have failed to protect those who have died, we may have our backs against the wall, but I can see that the utopians are getting reckless. They think that you, the people, are weak. They think they can just push you around. They can't. I know that even if their plan succeeds, even if they manage to take over the world, you will not stand by. You will not watch as they slaughter freedom. You will fight back, even without powers. Because, because everyone is a hero, and everyone has the power to save the world.” Thank you Justice.
Thank you meteor brigade. We must have hope.
BREAKING NEWS
Justice has died.
January 30th, 1994 Justice, also known as Quincey James Vonyant, died yesterday at the age of twenty four years.
There are no words to describe the light that we as the people have lost. No words can describe how utterly horrific his death was. He was murdered by Superego, and his body was found under rubble, headless and mangled. He died saving the mayor of Wichita, kansas. His twin sister, Clairity, who has revealed her civilian identity to be Clair Lily Vonyant, gave a few words at his funeral today. She asked that they not be printed, to which we obliged. Quincey’s funeral was short, for fear that it would be attacked by the utopians. He now rests in Southwillow graveyard.
Quincey Vonyant was a bright young man, full of life, full of bravery and courage. He was saddled with the duty of protecting the world at only 19 years old, barely an adult. And yet despite his young age, managed to do it with grace and with a smile. He gave up his pursuit of going to college and becoming a doctor in order to be a hero fulltime.
He had a beautiful heart, and loved kids. He often read to them at public libraries across the world. But despite all these good traits, it is important to remember that despite all his powers, his public image, and his heart, he was human, like us. He wasn't just a perfect person with no flaws or sorrows, he had them. I knew him well, speaking to him and interviewing him often has that effect. I lost a friend. And the world has lost a hero.
But we must remember his last words given to the press, and words he said often. Anyone can be a hero. And it's at times like this, we must rise to the challenge that the world has thrown at us. We can't give into despair, we must honor his memory, and hold onto hope.
BREAKING NEWS: Superego and utopians defeated, and the end of the meteor brigade.
February 17th
In a field out in Nebraska, Clarity avenged her brother and the thousands of people that superego killed. There was snow on the ground as I looked on at the catatonic body of Superego. He was not killed, but his brain was utterly shattered. I think we can all safely say good riddance. He will never use his mind to hurt others again.

Ezekiel 1:1-3:15, Hebrews 3:1-19, Psalms 104:1-23, Proverbs 26:24-26
Today is the 1st day of November welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it's great to be here with you as we greet the new month while simultaneously greeting a brand-new, sparkly, shiny week. So, this is one of those rare opportunities where we’re…we’re starting all over, like it's a brand-new start here to the month and the week. And welcome to the 11th month of the year and the 306th day of the year. And on top of all of this newness we have a brand-new book we’re going to move into as we begin a new week and a new month. So, we moved to the prophecies of Jeremiah and then we saw those prophecies come true and then we moved through the book of Lamentations and lamented that all of the stuff that had been prophesied did come true pertaining to the destruction of Jerusalem. And, so, now we find ourselves on the threshold of the book of Ezekiel.
Introduction to the book of Ezekiel:
Ezekiel is another major book of prophecy in the…in the Scriptures in the Old Testament. And here’s what we know about Ezekiel. We know that he was a well-educated person, we know that he was deeply loyal to God. We discover that in this in this text. And we also understand that he was loyal to the traditions of the people, the Hebrew people. He came from a priestly family and…and like Jeremiah he used his prophetic ministry as instructed by God symbolically in a lot of ways. He symbolically acted out what he was prophesying. And Jeremiah had been prophesying previous to Ezekiel, but they also had a time where they were prophesying alongside of each other it’s just they were doing it from two different locations speaking on behalf of God from both sides of a story basically. Jeremiah prophesied from Jerusalem. Ezekiel's prophecies were from exile in Babylon and there was considerable upheaval in the world of that time, a lot of empires going against other smaller nations and assimilating and conquering them while other empires were fighting…well…empire against Empire. So, Babylon, the Babylonian Empire had conquered the Assyrian Empire. And if we remember from the Scriptures, it was the Assyrian Empire that came and conquered Israel and took the 10 tribes and just deported them. They disappeared from history after that. And then Egypt and Babylon were clashing inside the land of ancient Israel because that was kind of like a land bridge between continents. So, controlling that major trade route is what made this land so important and so valuable. And we’ve watched the different alliances in the Scriptures, especially going through the book of…the book of Kings and Samuel and Chronicles. And, so, there were times where were the Hebrew people were vassals where they paid tribute to Kings who had conquered them then they would rebel and maybe regain their freedom and it was kind of a back-and-forth thing on a continual basis But we also watch in the Scriptures the generational decline of the entire system. So, in 597 B.C. the Babylonians subdued Jerusalem. And they did start deportations, they did take people into exile in order to assimilate them into the empire in different regions. And Ezekiel was among the first to go into exile and then a few years later, Zedekiah who had been installed as the king rebelled against Babylon. This is something that Jeremiah prophesied against as we were going through his…his work in the book of Jeremiah. So then in 588 the Babylonians came back to Jerusalem, laid siege to the rebellious city, and two years later they broke in and conquered Jerusalem and completely destroyed Jerusalem. Up to this point even though things had changed hands and tribute was being paid and all this stuff was going on Jerusalem hadn't been destroyed. But the Babylonians destroyed it. There…like there's evidence in Jerusalem until today of the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem. So, similar to Jeremiah, Ezekiel in his early years of prophecy in exile was prophesying of…of the destruction of Jerusalem. Jeremiah was in Jerusalem prophesying the same thing from Jerusalem. So, we’re just at two sides…like at two different points in the same story. Jeremiah’s in Jerusalem, Ezekiel is in exile in Babylon. But as we just talked about, eventually the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem. And, so, after the fall of Jerusalem and the Temple was destroyed then Ezekiel's prophecies transform and some of the most beautiful hope filled messages of encouragement and restoration in all of the Bible can be found. Things like Ezekiel 37, which has been such an important portion of Scripture in my life and in the life of the Daily Audio Bible – the…the valley of dry bones, the spirit instructing Ezekiel to call to the four winds the breath of life. So, significant. And we’ll get there. Ezekiel also has really interesting imagery, almost like visions that are cinematic. Kind of like Daniel, or even the book of Revelation - apocalyptic literature it's called as a genre. And, so, Ezekiel shares place along with Daniel and Revelation and many other portions of Scripture for those studying eschatology - the study of the Apocalypse, the end times. And, so, as we go through Ezekiel it's…it's like going through any of the other books of prophecy. We understand…we have to understand that this is the genre this is a prophetic narrative that includes visions. And, so…well…basically we have to understand that things speak to us in different ways. So, if you're sitting on a mountaintop and you have a really nice picnic and you’re there with somebody you love and it's a perfect day and the scenery is wonderful, you can be having your lunch just looking out over it all not saying anything to each other because words don't need to be said. You’re in this moment and nature is speaking to you, beauty is speaking to you, the power of God and His creation is speaking to you. And then after lunch if you pick up a novel and start reading then that book is gonna speak to you differently than nature did. And then if you read for a while and you pick up the newspaper, well the newspaper’s gonna speak to you in a different way than the novel did. And if you spend the whole day there and you watch the sun go down then the sunset is gonna speak to you different than the newspaper did. So, let’s just invite God to speak to us in whatever way that we’re listening as we move through the book of Ezekiel and to guide us into what we need to hear for the days ahead in our own lives. And, so, let's begin. We got a brand-new month. We got a brand-new week. We’ll read from the Evangelical Heritage Version of the Scriptures this week. Ezekiel chapter 1 verse 1 through 3 verse 15.
Prayer:
Father we thank You for Your word. We thank You that we have this image of all things new - brand-new week, brand-new month, brand-new territory in the Scriptures - and it brings us a sense of sigh. Like we've been through a lot this year and we are here, and You have been faithful, and You continue to lead us forward. We are so deeply grateful. And, so, Father as we move through these days, they have been indeed tumultuous days this year on a number of levels and continue to be on a number of levels right now as we continue to move through this time. May we find comfort and rest under the shadow of Your wings, that we are cradled and protected by Your mighty strong arm, that we are Your children and we are here bearing witness to the birth of new things because You are doing a new thing, You are continually doing a new thing and we want this new thing to continue in our hearts, this transformation, this sanctification, this setting us apart, that we lose our taste for the world and hunger and thirst for Your kingdom. Declaring along with the psalmist, better is one day in Your courts than a thousand anywhere else. And, so, as we move into this final couple months of the year we already know where gonna need You. When do we not?  We think we don't sometimes and then we take things up in our own power and strength and crash them. We’re not doing that anymore. We learned our lesson. We need You and only You. And we need Your ways and only Your ways in our hearts and in our lives. This is what will lead us on the narrow path that leads to life. And its life that we are looking for and life comes from You. You are the source, the source of life. And, so, come Holy Spirit we pray as we…as we consecrate this week and this month to You. Come Jesus in Your mighty name we ask. Amen.
Announcements:
dailyaudiobible.com is home base, it is the website and indeed where you find out what is going on around here.
Man, this is it like not one of my favorite days of the year, not because there's anything really, really bad going on. It's…it’s…this is the day where in the clocks…the clocks set back. And, so, in the time zone that I live here in Nashville that just makes for…that makes…that makes it dark. It’s gonna be dark maybe a few minutes after 5 PM. By the time Christmas gets here it’ll be dark by 430 in the afternoon and that’s…that’s not my favorite. There’s nothing wrong…everything’s fine…it’s just not my favorite. But I'll be looking forward to it getting dark in our earlier today as will many of you. And, so, that is what's going on around here right now, but there are always different things going on in the Daily Audio Bible world especially at the Prayer Wall. It's an ongoing ever-growing ever-present thing where we can always have a place to go for prayer and always have a place to go and offer prayer. So, be aware of that. That's in the Community section of the website. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app you can press the little Drawer icon. That's in the upper left-hand corner and you can also get to the Prayer Wall. So, check that out.
If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, thank you, humbly and profoundly. Thank you for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address, if that is your preference, is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.
And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement 877-942-4253 is the number to dial or just hit the Hotline button. It’s the little red button in the app if you’re using the app. And if you're not, you should be using the app. This is the portal…this is…this is where we’re developing community. And, so, be familiar. Be aware. That's where the…that's where the Hotline button is. So, check that out.
And that's it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I'll be waiting for you here tomorrow.
Community Prayer and Praise:
Hey my friends it’s Mike and I’ve been in this journey with you for over 10 years and when you offer a prayer request you should know that there are people like me who are just instantly praying with you and for you. And when you feel alone you’re not alone and when you feel like you can’t go on and there’s no one in your corner look over your shoulder you got your DAB back there just cheering you on and praying for you and believing with you. So, this…this call is really to challenge and encourage and…and really ask everyone in the DAB to journey through the Daily Audio Proverb for the next 30 days, hopefully for the month of November. Each day invest five minutes in…in the Daily Audio Proverb and you can hit it right there in the app and if you do and if you let it permeate your life, your relationships, how you respond, it will have a dramatic impact. Proverbs 8 says you’ll have more joy, you will find life and grace. And then actually if we don’t get wisdom or if we refuse wisdom that we’re only hurting ourselves. We’re actually moving toward death and not towards life. And I…I found this myself a couple years ago, how I was…I was responding foolishly, and I realized, “wow! I need more wisdom. Where do I get that?” And I heard Brian mention the Daily Audio Proverb. Changed my life. I invite you to take the challenge for the next 30 days, five minutes a day, Daily Audio Proverb. You won’t regret it and you’ll be glad you did. Your Father is madly in love with you any he gave you this gift. I love you guys. Bye.
Good morning my name is __ I am calling in for prayer. I’m having a hard time right now. I need a place to live. I’ve been watching…listening to Brian for about four or five years. It’s my first-time calling in. I would like for all of you to pray for me to help…to ask God to help me find a place to live. I’m kinda down right now but I’m trying to pull myself up and keep going and wait on the Lord to guide me and help me find a place to live. So, please pray for me. I love you all and thank you Brian for what you do every day. Bye.
This prayer goes out to Brian from Australia. I heard his call for prayer about saving his marriage and being patient and stepping up to stay in it and I just wanted to say I’ve been there my brother. The strength you’re showing is amazing. Your love for your wife is amazing and for your family and kids is amazing. I just pray that God directs you and guides you and keeps your family safe and together. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. And good luck brother.
This is Candace from Oregon please join me in prayer is for Radiant Rachel’s stepdaughter Gabby, I believe her name is Gabby. Lord, we ask You to surround this beautiful Young woman. We ask You that she would be completely freed from all foul spirits that have been harassing her in any way and that the only spirit allowed to surround her is the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ over and under her, in front of her, behind her, and on either side. I pray Lord that she would just become free to become everything that You made her to be in all her beauty Lord. I pray that she will take medicines that are helpful, that You will just restore her health by any means You choose Lord, that You give her robust health. We ask these things in Jesus’ name and for His sake. We ask You Lord to bless Radiant Rachel’s entire household. Pour out Your blessing on them Lord and put a hedge of protection around even the building, the house itself and especially guard the hearts of each person and their family. We ask this in Jesus’ name and for His sake and to His honor and glory. May we all become obedient to You Lord, taking every thought captive to the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

KNOWING YOUR BIBLE
November 22, 2020: Dear Friends, As we enter into this Thanksgiving week, let us spend a few moments reflecting on what we are thankful for. Making a gratitude list and reviewing it daily through the week will help in keeping our thoughts on the many blessings that we receive from God. I am thankful that I have the Lord God with me at all times, overseeing and providing guidance over my life, and having love and compassion for me as I progress through life. I am thankful that I have God’s Holy Word, the  Bible, to read and study that keeps me and helps me draw nearer and closer to God. I am thankful for the freedom to write this blog...the list goes on and on.
There are so many blessings given to me from God that I could spend several hours making my own gratitude list. What is important though, is not my gratitude list, but the follower’s gratitude list. When time is taken to recognize and realize God’s hand in our lives, glory and praise are being given to God for what he has done for us. God wants us to thank him, just as we would want to be thanked and praised from some one we gave a gift to. And in the process of glorifying God by giving thanks, our relationship to God is enhanced and fortified.
These are tumultuous times. The temptation is there to blame God for what is going on in our lives. Remember, however, that mankind is allowed by God to make choices and decisions concerning day-to-day living experiences. Many happenings are out of our hands, but keep in mind, many of these occurrences that we have no control over, are in the hands of God and of others. Knowing God is with us and praying to Him to help us and to intercede in behalf of our concerns and worries, are very important actions, that through God’s help, can change the course of events and occurrences in our daily lives. (Refer to the November 8th blog on prayer.)
Reading and knowing The Holy Bible allows us to know how God thinks and how God wants us to think and act. Having faith and trust in what we learn through Bible reading influences our thinking and decision making. Gaining knowledge through reading God’s Word helps us by allowing us to realize God’s love and guidance to us.
May this be a joyous and grateful Thanksgiving week! Verses will be written below to read and contemplate on God’s Word to you. Relax as you are reading the verses and concentrate on the beauty of what  has been written. Other verses will be listed to give experience in searching for and reading Bible verses. Going to previous blogs by going to the website above left will provide valuable information and knowledge on learning and knowing the Bible.                                                        MAY GOD BLESS YOUR BIBLE STUDY THIS WEEK!            BIBLE VERSES:  Psalm, chapter 92, verses 1-4: “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name most high; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands, I sing for joy.”         Psalm, chapter 100, verses 1-6, a Psalm of thanksgiving: “ Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. give thanks to him, bless his name. For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures for ever, and his faithfulness to all generations.”        Psalm, 138, verses 1-3: “I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. On the day I call, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul.”           And  verses 7-8: “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand and your right hand delivers me. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. do not forsake the work of your hands.”   Verses to search for and read: Psalm, chapter 135, verses 1-3; Psalm, chapter 145, verses 1-21; Proverbs, chapter 3, verses 5-6; Isaiah, chapter 30, verse 15, and verses 20-21; Matthew, chapter 7, verse 7; Colossians, chapter 1, verses 9-13;  1st Thessalonians, chapter 5, verses  16-18; Matthew, chapter 17, verse 19; Luke, chapter 18, verse 42-43.

Daily Astrology~January 4th, 2019: Radical Words and a Grand Water Trine
By Nadia Gilchrist
Mercury in Sagittarius trine Uranus Rx in Aries (28 deg)
Venus in Scorpio trine the Cancer North Node (26 deg)
Sun in Capricorn sextile Neptune in Pisces (14 deg)
Mercury/Uranus
Mercury’s freedom-inducing trine to Uranus is a final burst before it enters restrictive Capricorn later today. Uranus amplifies Mercury in Sag’s view of possibilities (and bluntness) by adding innovation and a touch of controversy. Excellent for leaps of logic and radical honesty, which you can then focus once Mercury enters Capricorn.
Uranus is Rx – are you returning to a past issue of liberation or creativity? Does something need to be expressed? Perhaps now is the time to put it into words.
Note that this trine can help you look beyond yesterday’s hurtful Mercury/Chiron square – no matter what went down, there are always new and better options ahead.
Venus/North Node
Venus in Scorpio trine the North Node is part of an ongoing Grand Water Trine that I discussed in this week’s horoscopes:
“January 1st to 5th features yet another Grand Water Trine involving Chiron in Pisces and the Cancer North Node. It was activated from November 6th to 8th (by Jupiter in Scorpio) and on November 20th (by the Sun in Scorpio). Now Venus in Scorpio reactivates the potential to address weaknesses and vulnerabilities (Chiron) while moving forward into new emotional territory (North Node). Venus is about relationships, values, finances and self-esteem, so these areas can flow nicely. The North Node will be key – step into a new area that demands emotional honesty and vulnerability.”
Venus in Scorpio is about the deepest possible commitment to what you want or who you love (including yourself). This will involve an uncomfortable amount of honesty, but the rewards will include forward movement (North Node) to a place where your needs are honoured. This is about tuning into what you want and need, and the flow of the trine ensures that this will happen naturally. Meaning, if it doesn’t feel right and move forward without effort, it’s not meant to be.
Sun/Neptune
This influence will be fairly quiet – Neptune will whisper that there are other possibilities beyond current rules and status. Sun in Capricorn can (if you’re aware – this influence will be easy to ignore) gently add warmth to a dream or a belief and allow you to make it real. Nothing dramatic mind you (sorry, no lottery wins).
Overall, I’d say this is a day for being honest with yourself, on an intellectual and emotional level. The trines will make it easy – all you have to do is go with it.

NIGERIA @ 57: Full text of President Muhammadu Buhari's speech
NIGERIA @ 57: Full text of President Muhammadu Buhari's speech
Tumblr media
BROADCAST BY PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI ON OCTOBER 1ST, 2017
My dear Nigerians,
October 1st remains a special date for all Nigerians as this marks the day when we attained one of the most precious of human desires — freedom. Over the years the country has gone through trials and tribulations, but October 1st is always a day for celebrations.
It is a day for thanks giving, reflection and re-dedication. It is also a day for remembrance. We should remind ourselves of the recent journey from 1999 – 2015, when our country happily returned to democratic rule. However, in spite of oil prices being an average of $100 per barrel and about 2.1m barrels a day, that great piece of luck was squandered and the country’s social and physical infrastructure neglected. We were left with no savings and huge infrastructure deficit.
The APC Government’s Campaign rallying cry to restore security, re-balance the economy and fight corruption was not all rhetoric. The country must first be secured. The economy must be re-balanced so that we do not depend on oil alone. We must fight corruption which is Nigeria’s Number One Enemy. Our Administration is tackling these tasks in earnest.
In the past two years, Nigeria has recorded appreciable gains in political freedom. A political Party at the Centre losing elections of State Governor, National Assembly seat and even State Assemblies to the opposition parties is new to Nigeria. Added to these are complete freedom to associate, to hold and disseminate opinions. Such developments clearly attest to the country’s growing political development. But like all freedoms, this is open to abuse.
Recent calls on re-structuring, quite proper in a legitimate debate, has let in highly irresponsible groups to call for dismemberment of the country. We can not and we will not allow such advocacy.
As a young Army Officer, I took part from the beginning to the end in our tragic civil war costing about 2m lives, resulting in fearful destruction and untold suffering. Those who are agitating for a re-run were not born by 1967 and have no idea of the horrendous consequences of the civil conflict which we went through.
I am very disappointed that responsible leaders of these communities do not warn their hot-headed youths what the country went through. Those who were there should tell those who were not there, the consequences of such folly.
At all events, proper dialogue and any desired constitutional changes should take place in a rational manner, at the National and State Assemblies. These are the proper and legal fora for National debate, not some lop-sided, un-democratic body with pre-determined set of objectives.
Government is keeping up the momentum of dialogue with stakeholders in the Niger Delta to keep the peace. We intend to address genuine grievances of the communities. Government is grateful to the responsible leadership of those communities and will pursue lasting peace in the Niger Delta.
SECURITY On security, Nigerians must be grateful to our gallant Armed Forces for rolling back the frontiers of Boko Haram’s terrorism, defeating them and reducing them to cowardly attacks on soft and vulnerable targets. Nigeria is grateful to its neighbours and the international community for the collective efforts to defeat this world-wide menace of terrorism.
Not even the most organized and most equipped police and security forces in the world can escape the menace of modern day terrorism, as we have seen in recent years in Europe and other parts of the world. But we are not letting up. Our Armed Forces in an effort to enhance the operational capability of troops of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE have established Mobile Strike Teams in the North East. These will ensure the final push to wipe out the remnants of Boko Haram. In addition, through targeted air strikes most of the leadership and identified logistics bases and routes of the insurgents have been neutralized. The Armed Forces have established a Naval presence in the Lake Chad Basin as part of the coordinated military efforts to curtail the movements or re-emergence of the sect in the area.
Government is working round the clock to ensure release of the remaining Chibok girls, as well as other persons in Boko Haram captivity. Government will continue to support the Armed Forces and other security agencies to fight not only terrorism, but kidnapping, armed robberies, herdsmen/farmers violence and to ensure peace, stability and security in our country.
ECONOMY With respect to the economy, the Government has remained pro-active in its diversification policy. The Federal Government’s agricultural Anchor Borrowers Programme, which I launched in November 2015, has been an outstanding success with: * N43.92 billion released through the CBN and 13 participating institutions, * 200,000 small holder farmers from 29 states of the federation benefitting, * 233,000 hectares of farmland cultivating eight commodities, namely Rice, Wheat, Maize, Cotton, soya-beans, Poultry, Cassava and Groundnuts, in addition to fish farming. These initiatives have been undertaken in close collaboration with the states. I wish to commend the efforts of the Governors of Kebbi, Lagos, Ebonyi and Jigawa States for their support to the rice and fertilizer revolutions.
Equally commendable are contributions of the Governors of Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Benue, Ogun, Kaduna and Plateau States for their support for the Presidential initiative for palm oil, rubber, cashew, cassava, potatoes and others crops. With the abundance of rainfall last year and this year, agriculture has enjoyed Divine intervention.
Since December last year, this Administration has produced over 7 million 50Kg bags of fertilizer. Eleven blending plants with a capacity of 2.1 million metric tons have been reactivated. We have saved $150 million in foreign exchange and N60 billion in subsidy. Fertilizer prices have dropped from N13,000 per 50Kg bag to N5,500.
Furthermore, a new presidential initiative is starting with each state of the Federation creating a minimum of 10,000 jobs for unemployed youths, again with the aid of CBN’s development finance initiatives. Power remains a huge problem. As of September 12th, production of power reached an all — time high of 7,001 Megawatts. Government is increasing its investment, clearing up the operational and financial log jam bedeviling the industry. We hope to reach 10,000 Megawatts by 2020.
Key priorities include better energy mix through solar and Hydro technologies. I am glad to say that after many years of limbo, Mambilla Power Project has taken off.
Elsewhere in the economy the special window created for manufacturers, investors and exporters, foreign exchange requirements has proved very effective. Since April, about $7 billion has come through this window alone. The main effect of these policies is improved confidence in the economy and better investment sentiments.
The country has recorded 7 consecutive months of lower inflation, Naira rate is beginning to stabilize, appreciating from N525 per $1 in  February this year to N360 today. Broad-based economic growth is leading us out of recession.
Furthermore, in order to stabilize the polity, the Federal Government gave additional support to states in the form of: * State Excess Crude Account loans, * Budget Support Facility, * Stabilization Fund Release to state and local government as follows: * N200 billion in 2015 * N441 billion in 2016 * N1 trillion in 2017 * Altogether totaling N1.642 trillion.
This was done to enable states to pay outstanding salaries, pensions and small business suppliers who had been all but crippled over the years. In addition, the Government’s current N500 billion Special Intervention Programme is targeting groups through; * Home Grown School Feeding Programme, * N-Power Job creation to provide loans to small-scale traders and artisans, * Conditional Cash Transfer, * Family Homes Fund and * Social Housing Scheme.
CORRUPTION Fellow Nigerians, We are fully aware that fighting corruption was never going to be a straightforward task. We expected corrupt elements to use any weapon to fight back, mainly judicial obstruction and political diversion. But we are determined to eradicate corruption from our body politic. In this fight, the Government has: * Empowered teams of prosecutors, * Assembled detailed databases, * Accelerated the recovery of stolen funds. The Administration’s new institutional reforms include: * Enforcing Treasury Single Account, * Whistle-Blowers Policy, * Integrated Payroll Personnel and Information System. We have signed multi-lateral cooperation agreements on criminal matters with friendly countries. There are signs of increasing cooperation from the Judiciary. Recently the Chief Justice of the Federation directed Heads of all our Courts of first instance and Appeal to accelerate hearings of corruption cases and dismiss any judicial officers found to have been compromised.
Justice Salami has just been appointed to chair the Judiciary’s anti-graft committee. Government expects a lot from this Committee. I commend the National Assembly for refocusing on its oversight committees. They should, in addition, ensure swift passage of enabling corruption laws. But fighting corruption is a bottom to top operation. I call on all Nigerians to combat corruption at every turn. By not asking for and refusing to accept a bribe, by reporting unethical practices or by blowing a whistle, together we can beat corruption. The government for its part will work for accountability at all levels – Federal, State and Local Governments. CHANGE will then be real.
As we enter the second half of our term of office, we intend to accelerate progress and intensify our resolve to fix the country’s challenges and problems.
Thank you and a happy holiday to all of you.
God bless our country.

What’s Halloween Really About
Tumblr media
Many people that I know object to Halloween.  For them, this is a day that is used by Satan for demonic activity, is a time when believers give the devil a foothold in their lives, and is an excuse for carnal and immoral behavior.  However, I propose a different perspective.
This is the day that the Lord has made.  Yep!  God created this day, and he intends for us to use it just as much as every other day to rejoice and be glad in it (Ps. 118:24).  God never relinquished any day of the year to the devil.  The Lord reigns supreme over the universe on every day of the year.  Just because some people use the day in a way that detracts from God’s goodness (as with any other day), we should not shy away from using it in a way that points people to God and the joy that we find through a personal relationship with him.
This is the day before All Saints Day.  Back in the eighth century, Pope Gregory III set aside November 1st of each year as All Saint’s Day, a day of recognizing and giving thanks for those heroes or saints that influence our Christian heritage and our spiritual development.  The night before became known as All Hallows (Holy) Eve or Halloween.  On Halloween, some followed customs established in the ancient, Celtic celebration of Samhain, a night of welcoming the fall harvest and recognizing the “dark half of the year” (the time of longer darkness and less sunlight.)  Still others, reflected on the Roman celebration of Ferelia or the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead, a time of remembering the deceased.  Some viewed Halloween as a day to enjoy worldly pleasures before the sacred day (much like Mardi Gras).  Thus, many traditions associated with these commemorative times influence how Halloween is celebrated, today.  Nonetheless, the day originated as a day of preparation for All Saint’s Day.  As such, we should use this day as a time of introspection and contemplation about the sinfulness of our lives, the need for personal repentance, and the hope that we have in Christ, which transcends death.
This is the day when we can experience the joy of the Lord.  Families dress up in thematic costumes.  Socialize with neighbors on your street that you rarely even wave to.  Visit your local community carnivals or church festivals.  God longs for us as his people to experience the Christ-honoring desires of our hearts and the joy that comes through living in the freedom that he provides (Ps. 20:4-5).  Certainly, there are limits to what honors the Lord, and we must prayerfully discern with those are for each of us and our households (Josh. 24:15), but we can enjoy the abundant life that he gives to us, not living in fear but in the freedom of Christ (Jn. 10:10).
This is the day we can share God’s love with some that we may never otherwise encounter.  As Christ-followers, we are called to live in the world in such a way that we positively influence others for the kingdom (Jn. 17:16).  How we do that is a matter of personal decision.  However, for me, one of the greatest ways for us to show the love of Christ is to engage relationally with people that do not know him.  By opening our doors and the doors of our churches to our community, we are able to debunk the myth that Christians are self-righteous egotists that live in isolation from those that are not “in” our group.  We can come alongside people and listen to their stories.  We can share about the hope that we have in Jesus, and how he has transformed our lives.
A Personal Testimony
To that end, let me share with you part of my story.  Thirty-eight years ago on this very night, October 31, 1981, I wanted to go Trick-or-Treating in my Darth Vader costume.  Instead, Mom took us to a revival at our local church, where I went forward and after being counseled by a Christian saint in our church, I put my personal trust in Jesus.  We went trick-of-treating later, but that night, I left “the dark side” and the true “force” of Jesus began to transform my life.
Since that day, I’ve made innumerable mistakes and have grown immeasurably.  I am not who I hope to become, but I am not who I once was.  My life has forever been changed because of what God did for me and how he worked in me on, of all days, Halloween.  Yet, I see no better day for my new life in Christ to begin.  On All Hallows Eve, I’m reminded that my darkness and evil intentions were leading to my eternal death and permanent separation from God and heaven.  Oh, but the joy of transformation--we worship a Saint who willingly gave his life so we might have eternal purpose and meaningful life.  We walk out of the darkness and into the light when we surrender our lives into his ever-faithful hands.
Suggestions
This Halloween, would you consider these practical applications as you finalize your plans for the day:
1. Spend quality time with your family.  Enjoy dressing up, trick-or-treating, indulging in your favorite candy, watching The Great Pumpkin, or just having fun together.
2. Spend quality time with other believers.  Get together and help out at your local church or community carnival.  Visit with each other; serve together.  We bond with each other when we build “community” and serve our community, with one another.
3. Spend quality time with unbelievers.  Turn on your “light” and share goodies with neighborhood kids that are walking down the street.  Open the doors of your church for carnival games, free food, and lots of fun.  Use these opportunities to get to know people and hear their stories.  Let them know that they matter and their lives have value.  Who knows, maybe the “costumes” will eventually come off, and we will realize that we are all sinners in need of grace.
4. Spend time with God.  Thank him for the changes you are experiencing in your life.  Let him know how much you need him.  Praise him for how you were once in the darkness but have experienced the Light of the World (Jn. 3:19-21).  Be grateful for this incredible day, and then watch for the ways that he will bless you throughout it.
Clothe yourself in Jesus (Col. 3:12) and be “the presence of Christ in the world, today.”  That is what Halloween (and every day) is really all about!

Before 2017 ends
I would like to thank people of 2017 that i have in my life forst of all God. Thank you so much I am really grateful for today and I offer you my faults today for I have sinned.
Anyway, today 12-31-17, i'd like to write my final thoughts and recollections.
2017 had me crying and the best part is, I've learned to laugh again.
Let's start of course from January to March.
I had a very blurry memory due to the timeliness but during this month I have an enormous feeling of regret and sadness. Those months I have these anxienty attacks and overthinking. I almost killed the end of my school year by just thinking, that probably made my memory fade away. The memories I'd say the most important parts like winning something or finishing a projects or having fun times playing chess with friends immediately (like when you ask me what was the best day of that months i mention I am like... uhhh) I don't have that strong memory. I honestly all I remember was pain. Covering all up by my negative emotions.
Well as far as I can recall, I have a friend, 2 of them named Rane and Rene. Name codes yep. They shared their story to me. They are different people with different stories with same ending; sadness. They are the true survivors of this youth and I pray for them everytime I remember them. Rane, has lost her parents, both of them, and she have this heart disease which causes her heart to expand greatly, unable to breathe correctly when stressed. Rene on the other hand lost her father, and there goes the financial crisis. Well we attended the same school with free tuition fee and free uniforms. Maintaining a grade is all we have to do. These two opened my eyes to this reality of the world. Everytime I thought of them, It somehow gave me hope to live in one longer for I was lucky. I want to pursue my dreams to help other people as well when I graduate. They gave me hope.
Regrets, tons of regrets of course. I wasn't able to say goodbye properly to my crush and my bestfriend. I wasn't able to attain my goal due to circumstances a. For not having a toga in Junior Highschool b. Having a lowest average which is 89. Yes 89 wasn't low but I know and I feel that I DO NOT DESERVE THAT GRADE. My grade are literally dropping 1st quarter palang at barely pa noong 4th. I don't know why @ first. But now I know due to this insomia events. I told you all I did was to think. I recieve my certificate and moral certificate to be able to move up. Grade 11.
April to June
These three months was my healing months of the year. Yes I took a break on everything! Stress and worries. I decided to move from a different school (w/out informing anyone) because I wasn't happy anymore. 🤒 So I moved on. I exercise. Eat well drink plenty of water visited nature. Etc. Away from stress. Then it was lighter. I take dose of positive qoutes reading happy books and drawing stuff. It was the best three months in my life.
July to November
Is the new start. New environment, new faces. Even though their teaching sucks (especially the Kompan teacher so sorry but no very unhelpful) I was looking forward to the freedom. The activities and seminars. Back in the day, we seminars and camping do not exist. Just joking they are very few extra curricullar that's that. Spent 4 months in these four walls with tons of paper works and project unkillable without few breaks. Actually almost 0 breaks cause even in weekends we have to finish a tons of essay and research and have to study next lesson and previous lessons because it's quiz week! With 12 subject, i have to manage my grumpy time which is I failed to organize. I am a half organize half untidy scheduler myself. Cauze if I plnn I'd like to stick with it but unluckly none of them was followed. So thwas always destroyed. Plan ruined. And freedom is what I seek in my new school yes. My dear Nigerians, October 1st remains a special date for all Nigerians as this marks the day when we attained one of the most precious of human desires — freedom.
In addition, through targeted air strikes most of the leadership and identified logistics bases and routes of the insuIn addition, through targeted air strikes most of the leadership and identified logistics bases and routes of the insurgents have been neutralized. The Federal Government’s agricultural Anchor Borrowers Programme, which I launched in November 2015, has been an outstanding success with: N43.92 billion released through the CBN and 13 participating institutions, 200,000 small holder farmers from 29 states of the federation benefitting, 233,000 hectares of farmland cultivating eight commodities, namely Rice, Wheat, Maize, Cotton, soya-beans, Poultry, Cassava and Groundnuts, in addition to fish farming. Furthermore, in order to stabilize the polity, the Federal Government gave additional support to states in the form of: State Excess Crude Account loans, Budget Support Facility, Stabilization Fund Release to state and local government as follows: N200 billion in 2015 N441 billion in 2016 N1 trillion in 2017 Altogether totaling N1.642 trillion. This was done to enable states to pay outstanding salaries, pensions and small business suppliers who had been all but crippled over the years. In addition, the Government’s current N500 billion Special Intervention Programme is targeting groups through; Home Grown School Feeding Programme, N-Power Job creation to provide loans to small-scale traders and artisans, Conditional Cash Transfer, Family Homes Fund and Social Housing Scheme. CORRUPTION Fellow Nigerians, We are fully aware that fighting corruption was never going to be a straightforward task. We expected corrupt elements to use any weapon to fight back, mainly judicial obstruction and political diversion. But we are determined to eradicate corruption from our body politic. In this fight, the Government has: Empowered teams of prosecutors, Assembled detailed databases, Accelerated the recovery of stolen funds. The Administration’s new institutional reforms include: Enforcing Treasury Single Account, Whistle-Blowers Policy, Integrated Payroll Personnel and Information System.

How Will NYC’s New Fair Work Week Laws Affect Coffee Shops?
Baristas and other service workers in New York City are about to see a whole slew of new laws ensuring consistency and work-life balance in their schedules. Set to take effect on November 26, these new labor laws, called the Fair Work Week package, step out further than any in the country have yet in the direction of guaranteeing service workers some of the same benefits that allow workers in other sectors to live fairly and equitably.
“Last fall, we promised to make the lives of some of our city’s hardest working just a little bit easier by bringing fair, predictable scheduling to their jobs,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Predictable schedules and predictable paychecks should be a right, not a privilege. With this legislation, we are continuing to build a fairer and more equitable city for all New Yorkers.”
The five-law package mandates that workers must receive their schedules two weeks in advance, that they cannot be scheduled for shifts with less than an 11-hour gap between them, and that part-time workers are offered full-time roles before new workers are brought in. It also prevents certain businesses from placing workers on call and allows workers to deduct a portion of their paychecks as donation to a non-profit of their choice if they so desire. In coffee terms this means that, as of November 26, NYC baristas will see an end to “clopens”, same-week schedule releases, being called in on their days off, and being continually part-timed for business owners’ convenience.
In an era when so many US politicians are looking to weaken workers’ rights in the face of soaring housing and healthcare costs, NYC leadership framed this legislation as a way to keep its labor force safe, healthy, and intact. “One in nine New Yorkers is a retail worker, they are among the lowest wage earners in our city, and they struggle to survive on often part-time work, barely making ends meet,” said Stuart Appelbaum, President of the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union, who emphasized that the new laws will help workers plan their lives around childcare, education, or multiple jobs.
New York coffee workers I talked to feel that the changes are mostly positive, although they see more complexities and potential downsides to the actual implementation. “On the whole, I think these changes promoting worker protections are awesome,” said Bailey Arnold, Director of Coffee at Gregory’s Coffee. “We’ve always been very careful to try not to overwork or demand too much from our employees, not only because we value their health, well-being, and general workplace satisfaction, but also because most of our shops are pretty high-volume and that’s how you hit the gas on turnover.”
However, even though many high-end coffee businesses already try to live by these laws, some of the measures do present new challenges. “For us, a possibly negative aspect to these new protections are that some people who specifically work in the service industry in order to have freedom and flexibility in their schedules may feel disappointed or limited by needing to give conflicts so far in advance,” said Arnold. “Also, if a team member leaves a store due to promotion, transfer, resignation, or termination, the manager can’t whip up a new schedule as quickly or as simply as previously. Businesses who are doing the right thing already may groan that they’re being ‘punished’ for others who may have taken advantage of their employees.”
“But it’s not all bad,” says Arnold. “We should be grateful, hopeful, and excited that we’re moving toward this becoming the norm.” Arnold tells Sprudge that the CEO and HR team at Gregory’s briefed store leaders about it as soon as they found out in early September, and the company acted as if the laws were already in effect starting October 1 to work out kinks before the official start date.
Gregory’s has more than two dozen locations across Manhattan and New Jersey. What about smaller coffee bars? Sam Penix, owner of the Everyman Espresso cafe brand (currently with three locations), supports the new legislation but has major concerns around how the details of implementation will play out in smaller companies like Everyman. “My baristas have always had the freedom to ask their coworkers to swap or cover. I do release the schedule in advance, but by far the majority of my edits are initiated by employees,” he said. When he announced the news, the reaction from his staff was mixed, with full-time workers pleased and part-time workers worried about their ability to navigate between multiple jobs.
He also voiced concerns about how the new law that requires full-time positions to be offered to part-timers will play out in specialty cafes specifically. “It could have some unintended consequences for employers who have highly specialized roles within the company,” says Penix. “For instance, let’s say you have someone who is not ready to be on bar making drinks and will require several more weeks of training and you lose a seasoned bar-trained part-timer. You won’t have the option to hire a new fully-trained past employee or experienced trained barista so you can fill those shifts.” But, despite the logistical issues presented by the new laws, he’s still excited to see workers’ rights laws move forward and is working to acclimate staff gradually leading up to the 26th.
As NYC housing costs continue to climb faster than its wages, a legislative move to bolster the quality of life of one of the most vulnerable categories of workers represents good business sense. While retail workers are often undervalued, they are an absolutely crucial part of a local economy, and if they thrive, the region thrives. In response to these laws, many express the hope that NYC’s commitment to service workers’ rights will act as a model for the rest of the country to move toward. However, the adjustment won’t be easy, and workers who have built their lives around flexibility rather than consistency may face a difficult learning curve as the culture for NYC retail workers shifts. Hopefully the protections will do more good than harm for the coffee workers of NYC—and for coffee-loving New Yorkers across the five boroughs.
