My illustration for novel Law:
"I took the spoon with my left hand, on my right the scalpel was still aimed at the old man. Suddenly I realized that I was crying… All these feelings collapsed and I could not stand the tears."

Reading the Law novel in these dire times was probably not one of my best ideas.
What I definitely know is, I'd go haywire if the novel would be animated. I would even take the tiniest snippets, beggars can't be choosers.
Or even in general the backstory of the Hearts...Their past has so much potential, even if Oda decides to come up with a different approach.
Yes, it's only semi-canon, but still, excuse me while I sob into my pillows for a moment.
As not to spoil the novel or recent story events, I'll continue under the cut.
First of all, Wolf.
I don't know how he does it, but Law seems to have a knack for mellowing old mens hearts atp. Their growing friendship was endearing. Especially them actually verbalizing they consider each other dear friends is something healing for both of them.
The junker basically adopting all 4 of them because Law just said "deal with it! (please, can we keep them?)"..... He really missed being a dad it seems. Training them, together with Law.. Especially after standing up against the abusive relatives Penguin and Shachi were hiding from.
Gifting them the submarine, even painting it for them, so they can carry a part of his own dream with them broke me a little. Especially since he didn't want them drowning in the little wooden boat they bought on their own. So of course he had to gift him the "super endurable, nearly uncuttable" vessel.
Yeah, that cut through me instead.
*massive side eye to you, there, Blackbeard*
Don't even get me started on the 4 youngsters. I adore them to pieces. To smithereens. So I'll probably process that in my current fic series wip as I can't shut up about them.
Getting to see Laws inner growth albeit never losing his anxiety was also a precious pov. He didn't lose himself, despite all. And I'm glad he had at least a tatse of normalcy for 3 years, warming his shattered, naive little heart.
I can absolutely not stand to watch this if this turns worst case.
So I'm all the more heartbroken about what will happen. The freedom he promised Cora-san to seek is so tightly knit to these events and the Hearts (thinking of his crew also part Cora's). If Law lost ALL of these dear connections and convictions in that single happening, it would absolutely obliterate him (and me).
Wolf would probably get a heart attack if he reads about his little gremlins in the coo.

Ah, according to Novel Law, Shachi & Penguin's parents/family were drowned in a tsunami that hit Swallow island. Assuming there is no more info after part 1 of the novel and never will be outside the novel, it's evident Shachi nor Penguin are (at least partially) fishmen. Disappointed lol.
Oh... how sad. Shachi's relatives forced the two into child labor to trade illegal weapons & rob jewelry for water and bread... Law was pissed beyond belief and felt so connected to them hearing all this shit.

Let's put in this guest art work from the great late Kim Jung Gi for Novel Law when it was first serialised. I think either the first or second chapter.
Tumblr media
Teenage Law practicing, bringing life into the world.
I just want to make a post to point out how Law being a doctor is not anecdotal.
Tumblr media
Like, it’s shown in the anime that it’s his parents profession and he started to learn young and all but the Light Novel made me realize how important being a doctor is to him and how much pride and happiness it brings him.
It’s not just something about him, being a doctor is something that defines him and is very important for his character.
He studies tones when he gets the time, he even worked in a doctor office for multiple years when he was younger after Cora’s death.
He started saving people’s life at a very young age and carried out very complex surgeries very young. He’s literally a genius in this domain and it’s too bad it’s not shown enough in the anime.
The doctor he was working with told him how good he was and how much potential he had at just 13/14yo. He was born for this.
When he saved the lives of the people he loved he was filled with this euphoria that he saw his parents get before him, he understood their joy and felt connected to them and proud of himself.
He founds himself in being a doctor, he loves saving lives and is proud of how capable he is. He is able to make the most of his ope ope no mi thanks to his talent and hard work.
Law may be a pirate but he is also a doctor and he wouldn’t see himself being anything else than that.

I imagine them to be a happy family in the modern AU where Fengxian and Lakan are married and Lahan and Maomao are their children. Fengxian would be strict but she very much dotes on her kids (just not as obviously as Lakan, but who can compare with Lakan).
I feel like Lakan would be a lawyer which would put his skills to use, whereas Fengxian would be an academic in mathematics, and of course they're both super good at xiangqi and go in different ways. (I'd like to think Fengxian taught Lahan a lot of maths when he was younger and that encouraged his love for the subject).

Novel Law: Kikoku no Toki
I was expecting the translation to be released within today but apparently not?? So here's a very rough summary for Law novel, Kikoku no Toki chapter 1. Please avoid if you prefer reading the translation directly!
The later parts may be inaccurate bc I've only binged it...
Shorter summary:
Law's sword is broken during a fight against some rowdy pirates, but they manage to win the fight. The pirates had some kidnapped civilians onboard including a village boy named Hakugan. Law and crew spend a short vacation at Hakugan's village after releasing them. Law decides to buy a new sword.
Longer summary:
Chapter begins with Heart pirates facing off a group of pirates named Kalik pirates. They're 200 crews in total. Hearts are only 4 of its initial members, but Law's bounty is 80 million berries. He's already one of the most notorious pirates in the North blue. yep, I found it a bit odd too O_o
Law defeats the captain (had tough armor and wielded an axe), but his sword (the old one) cracks in half. He's tossed into the water by the wind during the heavy storm. Someone saves him before he passes out.
He wakes up in his ship's infirmary. Heart members glomp him and start crying. His crews have robbed the enemy pirates after defeating the henchmen. There were a bunch of captive civilians onboard the enemy ship, captured from an island to be sold off. They've rescued those people and gathered them at the sub's warehouse.
Law was saved by Hakugan, one of the captives. Hakugan managed to cut off his ropes during the commotion. Law inquires him about why he rescued a pirate, he says Law's eyes looked different from Kalik's, he seemed like a hero of justice to him. Law thinks it's ridiculous.
Law says he'll escort the captives back to their island, which was fortunately somewhere within their course. Law says it's an act of gratitude bc Hakugan saved him.
The civilians are all from a southern village in the Welbems island. The northern side has a larger kingdom ruled by some pirates. Btw, Hearts are all wearing orange jumpsuits. It was Bepo's idea. Law disliked it, but everyone other than Law decided to wear it anyway.
Law feels both humiliated and sad because of the sword. It was named Koshou, he always took proper care of it. He tells his crew to leave and takes a long shower while mourning over it. He has no way to retrieve it bc its parts are now under the sea. He only has the hilt.
Welbems is a warm island. After releasing the civilians, hearts decide to take a few days off to recover from their battle. The crew changes to summer clothes to relax.
We get to hear Hakugan's backstory. His parents have died, and he lives with his young sister. Some years ago, a butcher's shop in the village was caught on fire. He rescued a woman and child but his face got burnt. He feels uncomfortable about it and has stopped entering the village.
The siblings live at a remote home owned by their parents. The home is quite fancy, because Hakugan's father was a warrior who used to fend of North's army and the pirates. With him gone, the south fears the north's invasion.
Hakugan was contemplating about meeting the village mayor, they seem to get along. Law practically drags him to the mayor's home. he could sympathize with the fear of mixing in the crowd
Most villagers still fear the Hearts (because pirates), but the mayor shows gratitude. Hakugan proposes them to stay at his home, Law takes the offer. Since Hakugan's parents have died, they have two spare rooms.
Hakugan's younger sister is named Nanagi. She's completely against the idea. Law doesn't interact much with her but he observes her, he thinks she looks like Lami but a little older.
The two siblings get into an argument. Law proposes a solution that they'll stay at Hakugan's place for three days, if Nanagi finds them suspicious, then they'll move to some other place. They reach to an agreement.
The hearts casually spend the three days. The rooms were decided at random, Shachi and Penguin were separated. Apparently it's their first time living in different rooms.
By this time, Nanagi and hearts have become friends. Law still acts grumpy with her (got into a silly banter with her about it, pff) But he's relieved that a girl who looks like his sister didn't kick them out of the home after three days lol. Nanagi has given everyone nicknames except Law.
Hearts have taught Hakugan some basic combat skills in the few days. It seems Hakugan wants to avenge his parents, and guess what - Law gives him the "revenge is bad, they wouldn't want you to risk your life" talk. He feels awkward about it himself.
Law asks Hakugan to take him to a local shop so he can buy a good sword. Meanwhile, Hearts discuss how they can utilize their strength so they can help their Captain better. They're all good swimmers, so they decide to develop an underwater based combat style.

Please let us comfort C about their knee 😭 I'm seriously going to be angry if there's no option to beat the sh*t out of Alain when we see him in game 😡
I'm begging you for a fluff piece, they deserve it ❤️🙏
C’s dorm always felt quiet—as though the silence itself was holding its breath. even when music hummed low from the speakers, even when there was a mug of tea on the desk and a book abandoned on the bed, even when you were there. especially when you were there.
you hadn’t meant to stay this long—hadn’t meant to be here at all, really. but the night had bled into a soft comfort that made time meaningless, and C had let their guard down in that way they only ever did with you, trading their usual biting flippancy for something quieter. something fragile and hidden beneath layers of disdain that you’d spent years peeling back.
they were standing now, aiming to move toward the small kitchenette attached to the common area, their voice low as they asked, “do you want anything? tea? something else?”
“tea’s fine,” you said, leaning back against the wall, your legs curled beneath you on the bed. it was a simple enough exchange, a moment so ordinary it felt almost... domestic.
and then you saw it—the faint hitch in their step, the way their right leg dragged ever so slightly behind the left.
your heart thudded once, hard enough to make your ribs hurt.
“C,” you said, your voice louder than you meant it to be. they froze mid-step, their back to you, their shoulders taut as if bracing for a blow. “did you—did you fall or something?”
they didn’t turn around. for a moment, you thought they wouldn’t answer at all. then, slowly, they turned their head, their profile striking in the dim light. the shadows softened their face but did nothing to hide the tension in their jaw, the faint tremor in their hands as if you’d caught them doing something illegal.
“no,” they said finally, the word flat and hollow.
you sat up straighter. “then what—”
“it’s nothing,” they snapped, spinning to face you. their voice wasn’t loud, but it was harsh, each syllable flung like glass shards meant to keep you at a distance. their chalcedony green eyes burned, but the fire in them wasn’t the usual fury you’d come to expect from C. it was fear, raw and unfiltered.
“C…” you said again, softer this time, and that was what did it. their face crumpled, not quite enough to be called a collapse, but enough for you to see the exhaustion carved into their bones. they sat down heavily on the bed, their head bowed as if the weight of the moment were too much to bear.
“it’s nothing,” they repeated, but it sounded like a lie even to them.
“i don’t believe you.”
you waited, the silence stretching between you, brittle and acute. finally, they looked up at you, their face pale, their lips pressed into a thin line.
“my father,” they said, the words forced and clipped, as if they were prying them loose from their lungs with a metal wrench. “when i was little. he… he didn’t like that i accidentally broke a china plate from the kitchen while grabbing some food. apparently it was antique and one of its kind. believed i needed to be punished for being so careless.” they laughed bitterly. “he used a baseball bat to teach me a lesson.”
the air in the room shifted, stifling. you couldn’t speak, couldn’t fathom the kind of cruelty it would take to do something like that to a mere child. to C.
you swallowed hard, your throat tight. “let me see.”
they stared at you, their eyes wide and disbelieving. “what?”
“your knee,” you said, your voice steady despite the anger simmering beneath it. “please.”
for a moment, you thought they would refuse. they sat motionless, their hands clenched into fists at their sides, their breath coming shallow and uneven. then, slowly, they nodded.
C stood, their movements stiff and deliberate, and pushed the waistband of their pajama pants down far enough to reveal their knee. the act itself wasn’t sensual, wasn’t sexual; it was simply them letting you in, letting you see a piece of them they’d spent years hiding. but perhaps that knowledge made it all the more intimate.
your breath caught as your eyes fell on the fair, marble-like skin stretched over the joint. the shape of the knee was uneven, the bone obtruding out at odd angles where it had healed wrong. there were faint scars, pale and jagged, like ghostly reminders of the violence that had shaped them. the area around it was slightly swollen, the skin faintly discolored, a muted blue-gray hue that looked almost tender to the touch.
you reached out before you could think better of it, your fingers brushing lightly against the damaged skin. C flinched but didn’t pull away, their eyes locked on yours, their breath hitching as if the contact ached in ways that weren’t physical.
“good god,” you whispered, the word trembling on your lips.
C laughed, uncharacteristically nervous. “it’s not as bad as it looks.”
“it’s worse,” you said, and the anger in your voice shocked you both. but it wasn’t anger at them—it was at the man who had done this, the man who had taken a child and broken them in ways that could never fully be repaired.
without thinking, you leaned down and pressed your lips gently to their knee. the kiss was soft, reverent, more an act of devotion than anything else. C gasped, their hand flying to your hair, their fingers trembling as they threaded through it.
“what are you doing?” they whispered with a surprised look in their eyes.
“loving you,” you said simply, shutting them up.
see, childhood had been a knife stuck in C’s throat for the longest time, honed sharp by alain’s hands.
it was a knife that dulled with time but never stopped twisting. even now, years removed from that godforsaken house, from that evil man, they felt its cold atmosphere in every step they took, every chronic flare of pain in their knee when it rained or when they put too much pressure on their right leg, every stumble they hid behind a sharp tongue and a perfect façade.
vulnerability was a language they had unlearned as a child, carved out of them with every slap, every shout, every moment alain had twisted ‘love’ into something entirely unrecognizable.
and yet, here you were.
your lips pressed to their knee, the damaged joint that had never quite healed, and C felt like they were being slowly undone. the kiss was so gentle, so absurdly soft against the place they hated most about themself, that they thought they might break apart entirely.
no one kissed scars like this. no one kissed something so damningly ruined and made it holy.
C looked down at you, your face turned toward them like you belonged there, like you didn’t see the unflatteringly jutting angles of their bones or the bruises still hidden deep inside their soul which was wrapped in the rage that they inherited from their father.
you saw them. and in that moment, C wondered if you were the only reason they had managed to keep breathing through all the years of pain and silence.
they remembered the first time they laid eyes on you during middle school. you had been all fire and light, laughing with some friends, your smile so bright it had burned them. C, sitting alone at the back of the classroom, had felt a squeeze in their chest they couldn’t name. not yet.
at the time, it had felt like resentment—how dare you shine so freely when their world was filled with shadows which often made them taste the coppery taste of their own blood? how dare you be a star, so untouchable, so effortlessly seen?
but it wasn’t hatred, not really. they knew that now.
for years, they had convinced themselves that their fixation on you was because they wanted to outshine you, to prove they were your equal. they had fought you in every class, thrown snide remarks, done everything they could to make you notice them.
because the truth was, they would have torn the world apart just to make you look at them the way they looked at you.
and when you finally did—when your gaze settled on them, not with pity or contempt but with something startlingly like understanding—they had felt like they could truly breathe for the first time in their life.
now, as you knelt in front of them, your breath ghosting over their skin, C thought that maybe they had been living for you all along.
and it scared the fuck out of them.
because loving someone like this, needing someone like this, was just a brand new knife against their throat. and the most terrifying part of it all was that C’s heart didn’t mind it this time, not at all.
“tu es tutus,” you murmured, your lips brushing over the misshapen bone of their right knee. you’re safe.
they closed their eyes, their lips quirking up in a faint, almost disbelieving smile.
“amor meus, vita mea,” they said softly, their latin perfect, their voice unsteady. my love, my life.
you leaned into them, your forehead resting against their thigh, and they tilted their head back, their breath caught in a way that broke your heart.
C wasn’t a religious person. alain had beaten any notion of faith out of them long before they were old enough to properly understand it. but as they looked at you, they thought that maybe, just maybe, there was something divine about you.
my sweet starkid, they thought, god—or fate, or the universe, or whatever cruel, indifferent force that exists—must have made you just for me.
they reached out to you, their hand trembling slightly as it settled on the back of your neck. they pulled you closer, their lips pressing against your temple in a kiss so light it barely counted as one.
“stay,” they said, the word cracking slightly. it wasn’t a command though; it was a plea.
“i’m not going anywhere,” you replied, your voice steady and sure, and C thought that maybe, for the first time in their life, they believed it.
that really did hammer the nail in the proverbial coffin. you loved C unconditionally, so they lived.

Wolf: Remember, little brat, it's give and take. What we have is a give and take relationship. Don't forget that. I solely do give and take!
Law:.. Yeah, I know, Mr Junk. What do you want?
Wolf: So listen up! I will give you my friendship, and I will take your friendship in return! No take-backsies! End of story!
Law, smiling:.. Whatever you say, old man.
.... I adore them to pieces.

It's a good novel, but a lite novel. I will add to the biological note, and I've said it elsewhere, Law also tried his hardest to save his biological sister, and I think that even if he didn't fully believe Cora when he told him that Doflamingo wouldn't kill him because he was his biological brother (or brother), he definitely wanted to believe him, and it would have been logical for Law, because, even though he might have inadvertently sealed Lamy to her fate, he definitely didn't want her to suffer that fate. His own original family had also been so torn asunder that I think he didn't want to see another family suffer that, and I think those supportive, rather than restrictive and conditional, bonds of family are important to him.
Also, very funny that the novel confirmed fanon's long held head canon that Law gets nightmares. I don't really parallel them with Doflamingo's, but iI guess I could. Villagers cause Doflamingo's nightmares, and Doflamingo causes Law's, so there is that vicious cycle potential that I definitely think that Law breaks, and that the novel in particular shows.
Law, my beloved.
I've just finished reading Law's novel and I've been writing some random thoughts while I was doing it. Here they are (spoilers, obviously):
I had never really thought about exactly what Law had to do to cure himself of his disease and removing his liver with the help of his fruit to operate himself without anesthesia was not in my bingo card.
Thank you for your service, Wolf.
Law taking pity on Bepo and giving him a place to stay… you are a good person, Trafalgar, stop saying you are not !!!!!!!!
And Law also decides to have Shachi and Penguin stay with him because he's mad that Shachi's uncle would try to do to them what Doflamingo did to him… please, get off tumblr, I want to be alone.
Law has social anxiety and I mean, I’m not surprised.
I've said several times that Law functions like Doflamingo in the sense that he doesn't do anything for anyone that doesn't bring him personal benefit, and now it turns out that this novel is teaching me that it's something he also learned from the second man who saved his life. But Wolf's principle of give and take sounds more like an excuse for the children to be kind to each other and to others. Given what their stories are (not only Law's but also Bepo's, Shachi's and Penguin's), it's a good way to teach them basic decency. And in the end, that principle doesn't mean anything when it really matters to either Wolf or Law.
I had also never thought about the reaction Law might have had upon learning that Doflamingo has become the king of Dressrosa. At that point he is 16 years old and the events of Minion Island are not that far behind him. And the parallel between Law's nightmares upon discovering the news with Doflamingo's nightmares about what he experienced as a child… the idea of Doflamingo's recurring nightmares are one of my favorite details about his character because it's the one detail that makes him human and vulnerable, that would almost make you empathize with him if it weren't for literally everything else.
Me when the group first sees the submarine that will later become their pirate ship:
It's funny that Law stops Wolf from killing his own son because he doesn't want to see again how someone is capable of killing his own family and you can see the parallels with Homing and Doflamingo, only Homing was never able to do anything against his son and the consequences were devastating for everyone.
I'm SO GLAD Law's reasons for going out to sea were not only his revenge against Doflamingo, but also to find out what exactly is the freedom that Corazon gifted him. His revenge is important but it also has to do with making amends for the mistake he and Corazon made in not being able to stop him from taking Dressrosa. And yet there is also purity in his journey because he loves his people and they love him, his journey is not completely tarnished by anger.
In conclusion, mom I love him.
