Backswimmer in the subgenus Paranecta that I found hanging out in my pool. Backswimmers (Hemiptera: Notonectidae) are a family of predatory aquatic bugs. Unlike water boatmen, which swim right (dorsal) side up, backswimmers swim on, you guessed it, their backs. These insects can attack prey as large as tadpoles and have a needle-like proboscis that can result in a pretty painful bite. They are not only good swimmers, but also flyers, which allows for easy dispersal between small ponds and other bodies of water (like my pool). Their abdomen is covered in lots of tiny hair-like structures for trapping air against the body. This allows the insect to breath for a time underwater and keep its body dry.

Week 25 - Kaiju
The squids welcomed Willoughby, Zoanthidia and me, full of hope, to the capital of their strange underwater kingdom, as a gargantuan insectoid creature threatened their realm! Their report reminded me of the aggressive backswimmers living in my pond. Yet this creature was gargantuan, bringing back memories of last year’s visit to the island of kaijun. This creature ruled the interface between ocean and air. It possessed the ability to both fly and dive with equal ease, its insatiable hunger spreading terror in and above the ocean. We discussed our options and decided that our best chances lay in an alliance of the merfolk and squids. We urgently send out messages and squid reinforcements to the group distracting the Kraken. The combined forces finally lured the Kraken towards the kaiju. Instantly, a wild chase began with the kaiju hunting the kraken. The chase let them towards the open ocean, away from the merfolk and squids. Yet, this was only a temporary solution, as I could not leave even one of these horrors free to roam this ocean. Luckily, I knew exactly where I would find help! But this would take several weeks of travel without easy access to modern communication. Hopefully, I will be back in a few weeks with a solution to this unfortunate situation.

Backswimmer - Notonecta irrorata
Generally when we all think of insects, we think of those that crawl on land or fly through the air, but there are insects that call water their home. There are also several insects that begin their lives in the water and then move to the land (or the air) in their adult stage, but today gives us something different. From the cottage country of Caledon, we find an insect specie that spends a majority of its time below the water, only surfacing when it needs to collect air bubbles. It must have been pulled into the pool's filtration system and was spit out into the pool where I found it. A pool is no place for an insect, so afterwards I placed our new friend in a nearby pond. A True Bug by classification, we enter an infraorder called Nepomorpha (Aquatic Bugs) wherein there are all adapted for a life in the water (including Giant Water Bugs, Toad Bugs and Waterscorpions, but not Pond Skaters). They have hydrodynamic bodies and legs made to either grasp or to swim (or both). They all have their ways to navigate water, but the Backswimmer here is the strangest of all, given that it swims upside down! Backswimmers are often confused for their relatives: the Water Boatmen. These are a separate family (Corixidae) vs. the Backswimmer family - Notonectidae! To distinguish between the two (in broad strokes), Boatman tend to have flatter bodies and swim upright, while Backswimmers swim underside down.
By turning upside down, its vivid colors are hidden from eyes above and it can grasp creatures at the water's surface before they knew what hit them. To propel themselves they use their hindlegs like a pair of oars, but instead of rowing they press them inwards and then open them when they can by fully extended. The legs are just as powerful on land as when held in my hand, this individual tried to jump away! It's a surprisingly powerful jumper on land all things considered, but since it can't anchor its feet the way an Orthopteran does, there's only so far it can launch itself. Back in the water it jumps, and back in my hand it goes. With such power in those legs, it's no wonder that Backswimmers are effective hunters! If not for their rounded, adorable appearance, they might even gain the reputation of Assassin Bugs! They'll grasp prey and jab them with their rostrum to food. With regards to the latter, a word of caution to you, dear reader. Backswimmers have gained the nickname "Water Bees" as it seems that can inflict a painful bite using their rostrum if mishandled (see Picture 2 for how it looks). An insect like this can remain underwater for hours, so suddenly bringing it to land may give it the wrong idea, especially if done roughly. While I suffered no bites, always take care if handling a live specimen (preferably bring a container with you to observe them).
Pictures were taken on July 1, 2023 in Caledon with a Google Pixel 4. Next week, more new insects from Caledon!

Les athlètes de la nature : 10 photos d'animaux dans le feu de l'action
See on Scoop.it - Variétés entomologiques

Here’s a more full version of this lol >:3
“Algae?” Dorotea adjusted the microscope again. “There’s flagellates. And… eggs?”
Verda made a mild noise of surprise at his own station. “What kind of eggs?”
“Based on the shape, I’m going to guess Notonectidae. Backswimmers,” she clarified. She leaned back, her eyes struggling to refocus as she turned to the corpse. “Our vic was near water before she died. The injury on her ankle must have caused her to fall…” Dorotea stood, lip trapped between her teeth as her gaze roamed from the cadaver’s blotchy ankle up to her damaged face. “She twisted her ankle in a stream, or river, or something, and then she fell face-first and broke her nose. That, with the scratches all over her… Fuck, Verda. She was trying to run from her attacker. She fought to live. Then why was there no DNA under her fingernails?”
“Detective?” Dorotea’s head snapped up at the tone of Verda’s quivering voice. “We have a problem.” He stepped back, his hands shaking slightly. “Her blood isn’t hers.”
Dorotea swallowed. “Explain.”
“The blood here belongs to a dead person.” Verda stopped and half-laughed. “A more dead person, not one that matches our vic’s time of death. There are no viable white or red blood cells.”
“How is that possible?”
Verda ran a hand through his perfectly highlighted hair. “I don’t know. Either our timeline is wrong, in which case decomposition should be much farther along, or-”
“Or it’s a pathogen,” Dorotea whispered, the hairs on her neck standing up. Two pairs of eyes slid over to the cadaver’s slightly-parted mouth, where no doubt more pond flora and fauna were hidden. She was now painfully aware of the sign on the lab door that warned against bringing edible items inside, just as she was painfully aware of the two steaming mugs of coffee and half-eaten muffins that sat on each desk. The taste of blueberry greeted her as she ran her tongue over her teeth. “Good lord.”
“You don’t think it’s airborne, do you?” Even as he spoke, Dorotea could tell that Verda had arrived at the same conclusion she had.
“An unknown pathogen that does that to a blood sample? It doesn’t matter what I think.” She was already turning the deadbolt to lock the lab door. To her own surprise, her hand was steady as she retrieved her phone from her pocket, though her teeth ground together painfully. “Until we know exactly what this is, we’re in quarantine.”
Dorotea pressed the ringing phone to her ear and felt it echo through her bones. “I suggest you get back to work, Verda. Who knows how much time we have left.”

Backswimmers, Notonectidae, Hemiptera
Backswimmers are true bugs known for swimming upside down (inverted), often directly under the surface of the water. This distinguishes them from the similar-looking water boatmen, which swim right-side-up. Backswimmers are predators that can consume prey as large as tadpoles and small fish. Although they are mainly aquatic, they are capable of flight.

Backswimmer.
Unidentified notonectid in the gauging station pool at Huachuca Canyon, Cochise County, Arizona. These are sometimes called “water boatmen” in North America, though the term should probably be reserved for members of the Corixidae, who do not swim upside down.

Pleased to report I’ve been reading & actually finishing books! Sorry, not you Rosewater and Circe (it’s literally been months for these 2, will I ever finish them). But I feel like a reader again!!!
The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. Smutty romance, read in one day (!!). It’s a gender-swapped Pretty Woman, if you will. She’s an autistic workaholic in need of lessons in intimacy, he’s a handsome & kind escort. I read this in July and I’m afraid I’ve already forgotten the specifics. I just remember particularly enjoying the set-up at the beginning.
Samouraï by Fabrice Caro. This one’s in french and I’m not sure it’ll get translated since it feels like one of these books that wouldn’t necessarily appeal to someone who doesn’t have the cultural context. Like, if you don’t know Claire Chazal it’s probably not as funny that the character is constantly imagining her interviewing him throughout the book. Anyway I’m still gonna recommend it cause I loved it! The main reason is that the writing feels so effortless but is so humorous!! It’s rare for me to laugh out loud reading, but I laughed my way through this novel. It feels like getting to spend some time inside a super entertaining character’s mind as he’s progressively going insane/going through a double grieving process/going on blind dates/ruining his neighbors’ pool that he’s supposed to watch & making friends with a notonectidae. Read this one in 2 days.
The Bride by Julie Garwood. I guess this is also smutty romance. Not quite as enjoyable and diverse as The Kiss Quotient. It’s a close relative of Outlander, but without time travel (*haven’t read the books but did watch a couple seasons of the tv show). Also a quick read but didn’t make me feel much! It’s an arranged marriage of the most unrealistic kind, in terms of how quickly she’s falling for him (1st day). It’s kind of annoying how perfect she is as well (beautiful, brave, can fight, is a healer...) & how she doesn’t seem to belong in her century (12th). He’s obviously a giant, handsome warrior who could kill anyone with his bare hands & has a temper but won’t ever touch her & has a heart of gold etc etc. Not much beyond the cliche. Took me 3 days but only cause I’ve been back at work.

This is the 96th installment of 'Since I've Been Gone'. Taken on the same night as the previous post while I was on my Iowa hitch with @americanconservationexperience, I managed to catch another of those backswimmers that I believe is a grousewinged backswimmer (Notonecta undulata). Don't confuse them for water boatmen! #animal #animals #wildlife #iowawildlife #nature #iowanature #invertebrate #invertebrates #fauna #imago #iowainsects #insect #insects #insectagram #backswimmer #backswimmers #bugs #bug #truebug #truebugs #iowabugs #animalia #arthropod #arthropods #arthropoda #insecta #hemiptera #notonectidae #notonecta #notonectaundulata (at YMCA Camp Wapsie) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWPN4U-KRVf/?utm_medium=tumblr

Backswimmers, Notonectidae, Singapore
Backswimmers are aquatic true bugs similar to water boatmen (in the family Corixidae) except that they swim upside down and are predatory.

This is the 89th installment of 'Since I've Been Gone'. Taken on the same night as the previous post while I was on my Iowa hitch with @americanconservationexperience, I managed to catch what I believe is a grousewinged backswimmer (Notonecta undulata). It's impressive to see how the countershading is the opposite with backswimmers, with the dorsal being light colored and the ventral being dark due to their mode of swimming upside-down, hence where the name 'backswimmer'. #animal #animals #wildlife #iowawildlife #nature #iowanature #invertebrate #invertebrates #fauna #imago #iowainsects #insect #insects #insectagram #backswimmer #backswimmers #bugs #bug #truebug #truebugs #iowabugs #animalia #arthropod #arthropods #arthropoda #insecta #hemiptera #notonectidae #notonecta #notonectaundulata (at YMCA Camp Wapsie) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWOoj_3q6TM/?utm_medium=tumblr
