1938 Brough Superior SS100 £260,000 at Iconic Auctioneers
As iconic as it gets… the Rolls Royce of motorcycles. 1938 Brough Superior SS100 990cc - Guided at £240,000 - £260,000. This is as much a legend as it is a superb motorbike, it comes trailing romance and provenance and rightfully the respect of the whole motorcycle world. It is a bike that bikers dream of and now it comes to sale with Iconic Auctioneers at a guide price of £240,000 to £260,000. The "Rolls Royce of Motorcycles" was the way the press, in period, described George Brough's bespoke machines. Favoured by the rich and famous and built using the best components and most powerful engines available at the time, it was the bike chosen by TE Lawrence AKA ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. The Brough name is better known for motorcycles than cars, as the company produced over 3,000 two-wheelers between 1919 and 1940. Dubbed the `Rolls-Royce of Motorcycles', they were prestige machines that attracted a discerning clientele, and among the many famous Brough owners were George Bernard Shaw and T E Lawrence who had no less than eight and, of course, famously lost his life on one. In fact, the only bike more special than the one being sold by Iconic Auctioneers would be the TE Lawrence bike if ever that turned up for sale – the true Holy Grail of motorcycles, an icon of its kind – the whispers speak of a £1m price tag.
The SS80 used side-valve engines and were road tested to 80mph before being released from the factory, the SS100 used an overhead-valve engine and were road tested to 100mph. This, very well known, Matchless 990cc OHV SS100 (GUM 239) is presented in excellent overall condition and in good running order. It is one of only 102 Matchless bikes produced in total with 34 built with sprung frames and circa only 25 surviving today. Fitted from new with a Norton 4-speed gearbox, Castle forks and twin float carburettor. Correct numbers and restored by specialist Brough restorer, Tony Cripps, in 2010 to its current condition. Registered new on New Years Eve 1938 and shipped to dealers Watson Cairns Ltd. of Leeds. It has a known history since 1954 and with current owner since 2018. Extensive history file included, containing photos of the bike on a test run with Ron Storey and Barry Robinson in 1954 at the Brough Superior Works in Nottingham and at a Brough Rally in 1962 fitted with a sidecar, copies of old RF60 log books, photos and details of its restoration in 2010, original continuation RF60 dated 1954, a letter from Barry Robinson and copies of the article he wrote, restoration documents and photos, two old MOTs, old tax discs and other associated paperwork. The original fuel tank is included but not fitted.
The machine is a winner of numerous awards including 'Best MX SS100' at the Brough Rally (twice), 'Best ridden to show' once and best bike at VMCC Rally twice. This lot offers a fabulous opportunity to own a well-known and correct Brough Superior MX SS100. UK-registered on a current V5C. USA and UK are sending weapons to Ukraine
US decision allows NATO members in the Baltic to send shipments of U.S.-made anti-tank and air defense weapons to Ukrainian military personnel.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/20/2012 - 9:06 PM in Military, War Zones
The U.S. gave approval for three NATO members in the Baltic to send U.S.-made weapons to Ukraine, U.S. officials said. For three days, RAF C-17 planes have also been sending weapons to Ukraine.
The U.S. decision will allow Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia to send Javelin anti-tank weapons and Stinger air defense systems to Ukrainian forces. The Stinger is a surface-to-air missile that can be carried by a soldier and fired at airplanes and helicopters. The Trump administration provided the first Javelins to Ukraine. This weapon has an infrared seeker and is able to hit enemy tanks from above, where its shield is thinner.
The US has several mechanisms to provide assistance to Ukraine. The president has the authority to send weapons and non-lethal assistance from the Department of Defense's existing stocks. President Biden recently approved an additional $200 million in such assistance using this authority, which U.S. authorities said included Javelins.
The US can also allow allies, such as the Baltic States, to supply equipment of American origin. This step requires the approval of the State Department under export control regulations.
Approval to send weapons comes amid growing fears that Russian forces are ready to attack Ukraine. In addition to gathering forces east of Ukraine, the Russian military has deployed forces to Belarus and is also sending additional amphibious ships to the Black Sea to strengthen their military capacity near Crimea.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva on Friday. Russia rejected the Biden administration's call to slow down the escalation and the two sides remain distant.
Other nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization have been sending weapons to Ukraine. The UK Defense Minister said on Monday that his government is sending anti-tank weapons to Ukraine along with a small number of British troops to train the Ukrainian military on how to use them. For days, British C-17 cargo planes have been flying with weapons to Ukraine.
Flights began on January 17, with Royal Air Force C-17 aircraft departing from Brize Norton RAF Base to Kiev several times a day, today is the third consecutive day of deliveries.
The Biden administration also notified Congress that it intends to provide Ukraine with five Mi-17 transport helicopters, U.S. authorities said. Russian-made helicopters were intended for the Afghan military and were being repaired in Ukraine.
“The United States and its allies and partners are together to expedite security assistance to Ukraine,” said a State Department spokesman, who refused to discuss details of the shipments of the Baltic countries.
“We are in close contact with our Ukrainian partners and our NATO allies about this and we are using all available security cooperation tools to help Ukraine strengthen its defenses in the face of growing Russian aggression,” the spokesman added.
The U.S. can also deliver equipment to Ukraine after classifying it as an "excessive defense article" that is no longer needed. The five Mi-17 helicopters are being supplied to Ukraine under this program after months of discussion within the U.S. government.

J K Rowling being hosted on the BBC - still
LONG POST
**Trigger for transphobia** Today, BBC Radio 2, the most listened to radio station in the UK, hosted J K Rowling (again) on Graham Norton's show. I feel as though a lot of trans rights activists on Tumblr aren't aware of how much large media companies in the UK are still readily bringing her onto programs to promote her work, despite her recent transphobic behaviour. I'm a big BBC Radio listener and radio fan in general, so to see such gross negligence on behalf of the producers is infuriating, even more so to research and see no public discourse on the topic. I want to acknowledge that I'm not an authority on the subject at all, not identifying as trans myself, so if any trans people who read this would like to criticise/discuss what I've written in this post then I am very open to discussion. I'm making this post to ask those that feel similarly to me on these issues and were not aware of this initially, to take the actions necessary to alert the BBC of the harm they are causing by giving a platform to vocal TERFs such as J.K. Rowling, and demand a response and immediate action from them. You can't complain to Ofcom before finishing the BBC complaint service first, so I've linked it here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/contact/complaints Below are screenshots of what I inputted in my complaint application if people would like to use it as a guide. Please, PLEASE, use different wording to me in your complaint and express your own opinions on the matter. This only works if we demonstrate we're all individuals. I should also stress that the BBC complaint system applies to UK RESIDENTS ONLY as the BBC is a public broadcasting service funded on tax-payer money. If you are outside the UK, I would really appreciate if you share the matter to bring awareness to it.
[Image description: A screenshot of a BBC complaint form with two questions with drop boxes to choose an answer, and a green continue button in the right bottom corner. Under the question ‘What is your complaint about?’, ‘Radio (programmes/schedule)’ has been selected. Under the question ‘which radio station is your complaint about?’, ‘Radio 2′ has been selected. End ID.]
[Image description: A screenshot of a BBC complaint form with two aspects to the form. At the top is the question ‘What is the subject of your complaint?’. The space underneath has been filled in with ‘J K Rowling being hosted on Graham Norton’s show’. Beneath this aspect of the form is written ‘Please enter your complaint, and please don’t add personal details such as your name, email or phone number in this field - we’ll ask you for those at the next stage’. The box below has been filled in with the complaint. It is as follows: ‘I am very disappointed to see J K Rowling being hosted on Graham Norton's show today. She has very recently, and very publicly, outed herself trans-exclusionary radical feminist. She has posted multiple times about her distaste and disbelief in trans peoples' existence and has become one of the most prominent figures to preach such transphobic rhetoric, especially because of her heightened celebrity status and large wealth. Spreading these views and opinions against trans people encourages hate and violence against them, in the UK and around the world. What makes her 'personal' views even more damaging is when she, as a public figure, is legitimatised and given a platform by a large media company like the BBC. I'd imagine the BBC would be very scrutinising when inviting guests onto their shows that have outed themselves as misogynistic or racist, so I'm disappointed to see the BBC give a platform to a transphobic person like Rowling, promoting their work and advancing them as a public figure.’ End ID]
[Image description: A screenshot of a BBC complaints form. It is a continuation of the complaint written above. It is as follows: ‘It shows the BBC is disregarding the trans community within the UK which, as a public broadcaster, it is entitled to serve along with the rest of the population. What twists the knife in further is that she was hosted on Graham Norton's show, a national treasure and a beloved emblem of the LGBTQ+ community. I sent in a complaint last time J K Rowling was hosted on Radio 2, and I was enraged at the time, but now I am disappointed and saddened. It has genuinely changed my opinion of him and his team whom I listen to regularly, and on his finale lap as well. I hope you will take on my sentiments with nuance and appreciation for my concern. I would like for there to be wide spread consideration within BBC management about its approach on trans issues, before any more harm is caused. Thank you.’ End ID]
[Image description: A final screenshot of a BBC complaints form with multiple questions and aspects. First, it is asked ‘Select the best category to describe your complaint’. Below is a drop box to choose an answer. The answer ‘Offence’ has been selected. Second is the question ‘What is the programme title?’. The space below has been filled in with ‘Graham Norton (Radio 2)’. Then is the question ‘When was it broadcast? (dd/mm/yyyy)’. Below are three boxes in order to write an answer. They have been filled out with the numbers ‘14′, ‘11′ and ‘2020′ respectfully. Then is the questions ‘How did you watch or listen to the programme?’. Below is a drop box to select and answer. The answer ‘Actual (Live)’ has been selected. The final question is ‘Roughly how far into the programme did the issue happen?’. Below are two boxes to write an answer. The numbers ‘1′ and ‘30′ have been filled out respectfully.’ End ID.] TERFs DO NOT interacted. You will be swiftly blocked.
I should also stress, please DO NOT send hate to any one, Graham Norton, or any producers involved. Not only because it's just a shitty thing to do, but also because it will ultimately hurt our cause. We're looking for systematic change in the BBC, not the tearing down of individuals who are working under management.
If trans activists have suggestions about further action I can take/add to this post, then I am very welcome to being contacted.

He's just broken the nation’s hearts as the tragic anti-hero of BBC One’s Sunday-night sensation The Trial Of Christine Keeler – but James Norton’s next role has made the heartthrob actor “proud to become an honorary Welshman”.
In the title role of new film Mr Jones, Norton – already a favourite with bookmakers to be the next James Bond – takes on one of the most challenging projects of his career, playing a real-life yet forgotten hero from Wales who dared to combat and uncover one of history’s most shameful episodes of “fake news” from nearly a century ago.
James Norton at the Mr Jones screening at the London Film Festival
“Playing Gareth Jones was sometimes a tough call,” says 34-year-old Norton, known to millions from small-screen hits Grantchester and Happy Valley.
“In fact, when I first got the part and they told me it was going to be a Welshman who spoke both fluent Welsh and Russian, and all of it in a Welsh accent – that felt a bit scary!”
He needn’t have worried. As Gareth Jones, the mild-mannered young Western Mail reporter who travelled to Russia in 1933 and ended up blowing the whistle over the appalling truth about Stalin’s “Utopian” regime – and a hushed-up famine that killed untold millions – Norton presents us with a charming, softly-spoken hero with just a hint of a refined Welsh lilt.
It’s a million miles from those cliched, grating attempts at Welsh accents so often taken on by other English actors. ( Stephen Graham’s DCI “Taff” Jones in ITV’s White House Farm, anyone?).
Reports have emerged this week of Gareth’s great-nephew attacking the film for having “invented multiple fictions” – but as far as Norton is concerned, he feels the film stands as an honest and heartfelt reflection of Gareth’s character and incredible yet fatefully short life.
“We decided it was important to respect and honour Gareth’s journey – this Welshman from a small coastal town who ended up on this huge, bizarre and brave mission taking on one of the pillars of the 1930s political landscape in a very dangerous, pre-war Communist Russia,” says Norton, who worked with two Welsh dialect coaches to perfect his accent.
“So it made sense that Gareth would have maybe intentionally softened his Welsh accent, having been educated at Cambridge, in order to ingratiate himself in the community and then travelling the world. We wanted to keep it there without making it too distracting.”
Nevertheless, Norton – London-born but raised in North Yorkshire – was still required to speak Welsh in a few scenes, and Russian as well.
“I’ve never spoken either language before and I’m not a linguist – so I had my work cut out,” says Norton, who can also currently be seen on the big screen in the Oscar-nominated hit movie Little Women.
“But for those few months, I was very proud to become an honorary Welshman. My scenes with Julian Lewis Jones as my dad – when Gareth goes home to Barry – were challenging, but Julian was amazing helping me with my Welsh.
“Julian occasionally texts me in Welsh now, which is hilarious, as I think he’s forgotten I don’t actually speak a word!
“It’s pretty nerve-racking doing scenes where you’ve got to speak in a particular accent opposite someone who’s completely fluent in that language, so to have Julian put his hand on my shoulder and say, ‘You’re doing good, kid!’ was so reassuring.”
Learning dialogue for his Russian scenes was even harder.
“I had to learn all the Russian phonetically – it’s like learning music,” he explains. “I’d spend hours walking around wearing earphones and I’d look like a crazy person talking to myself, repeating phrases animatedly. But now I have Russian people coming up to me in the street, speaking Russian at me!
“Weirdly, I’ve done three jobs where I needed to speak Russian – War And Peace, McMafia and now this. I seem to have become the go-to guy for English-speaking Russian roles!”
The new film Mr Jones, directed by internationally-renowned Polish film-maker Agnieszka Holland, begins with Gareth Jones gaining fame in the early 1930s after his report on being the first foreign journalist to fly with Hitler.
Gareth, who’d graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1929 with a first-class degree in French, German and Russian, has also landed the job of foreign affairs advisor to former Prime Minister David Lloyd George.
With the Russian “utopia” all over the news, Gareth is intrigued as to how Stalin is financing the rapid modernisation of the Soviet Union and in March 1933 he decides to travel to Russia in an attempt to get an interview with Stalin himself.
However, on hearing murmurs of a government-induced famine – a secret carefully guarded by the Soviet censors – Gareth travels clandestinely to Ukraine, where he witnesses the atrocities of man-made starvation, as all grain is sold abroad to finance the Soviet empire’s industrialisation.
Deported back to the UK, it’s the Western Mail that publishes Gareth’s article revealing the horrors he has witnessed, but the starvation is denied by Western journalists based in Moscow, all under pressure from the Kremlin. As death threats mount, Gareth has to fight for the truth – and, meeting a young author called George Orwell, Gareth shares his findings... helping to inspire Orwell’s great allegorical novel Animal Farm.Gareth’s great-nephew Philip Colley made headlines recently, accusing the film’s scriptwriter of “inventing multiple fictions”, including wrongly suggesting he was an accidental cannibal.
Colley told the Sunday Times: “In the film, they have got [Gareth] up a tree eating bark, eating human flesh, tripping over dead bodies. They’ve made Gareth a victim of the famine, rather than a witness.”
Norton, however – interviewed prior to Colley’s remarks – says he received plentiful support from a number of Gareth’s surviving relatives, who came to early screenings of the film.
“They were all lovely in their support and they gave us their seal of approval, which was very touching,” recalls Norton.
“Our film’s screenwriter, Andrea Chalupa, was in touch with a lot of them early on. There’s so much literature and academia about Gareth’s work as a journalist, but Andrea found out some lovely titbits about his more private character.
“For example, when he went home to Barry he’d love being with his nieces and nephews and he became a big kid. His great-aunt told Andrea about one day when he came back home and he was rolling around with them like a labrador. That kind of story was invaluable to me.
“He wasn’t just this very earnest, principled man, there was a childlike, playful quality to him and he was almost a little bit gauche, a little bit awkward. You also want to honour his memory for his family.”
The main source of the film is a biography of Jones entitled More Than A Grain Of Truth, written by Gareth’s niece Dr Margaret Siriol Colley (Philip’s mother) and his great-nephew Nigel Colley (Philip’s brother), both of whom share a credit as the film’s historical advisors.
The book sparked Chalupa’s interest and she started corresponding with Margaret Colley soon after its publication. When Margaret died in 2011, aged 85, Chalupa remained in contact with her son Nigel, who became “heavily involved” in discussing ideas for the film. Nigel died in 2018.
Filmed predominantly in Poland, homeland of Warsaw-born director Agnieszka Holland, Mr Jones does contain some breathtaking snowbound scenes shot in Ukraine, where Gareth gets first-hand sight of the horrendous famine.
“We filmed in a tiny little place called Doch, which is three hours north of Kiev, in the middle of nowhere,” says Norton. “We’d drive for hours on these very unsafe roads, jangling your bones around. It was freezing cold in the snow.
“It was so remote that we had to put the word out to local farmers to come along as extras and we had a strict cut-off time – we had to wrap up at 5pm because they all had to go back and feed their animals!”
When it came to filming the scenes in Wales – notably Barry and the Western Mail’s offices in the film’s gripping finale when Gareth’s whistle-blowing scoop hits the presses – Norton reveals: “I’m really sorry to say they’re all filmed in Scotland! About an hour north-east of Edinburgh. A lot of those villages there have a quality of that small fishing town, for the Barry scenes.
“The other reason is that the film is partly funded by Creative Scotland and there’s that responsibility you feel to film there. But I think it worked well. It was a shame not to film in Wales, but we had a fantastic collection of Welsh players there, including Julian, so it felt home from home.”
Agnieszka Holland, of course, is not the first female director to work with Norton. He acted under the helm of Greta Gerwig on Little Women and with a largely female crew on the six-part TV drama The Trial Of Christine Keeler, which finished last Sunday, earning him rave reviews for his heartbreaking performance as Stephen Ward, the tragic scapegoat figure in the Profumo affair which brought down the UK government in the early 1960s.
“I’ve not gone out of my way to work with female directors, but I have great agents who always look for the best projects – but I really hope it’s a sign of the times,” he says. “The Christine Keeler story has never been properly told from a female perspective before, so that was the real attraction. Agnieszka, meanwhile, is the best of the best – the fact that she’s a woman is almost irrelevant.”
How does he feel about the fact that Greta Gerwig has been denied a Best Director Oscar nomination for her lauded version of Little Women, in which Norton plays eligible suitor John Brooke to Emma Watson’s Meg March?
“I can stand as witness to Greta’s brilliance and the fact that Little Women is up for Best Film and Screenplay is testament to her brilliance,” says Norton. “She singlehandedly redefined the story for a modern generation and it would have been wonderful to honour that in the nominations for direction – so it’s a horrible and unfortunate omission.”
It was while starring in McMafia, the gritty 2018 BBC1 thriller series with scenes of him bow-tied and gun-toting, that Norton’s name was first added to the list of contenders to play James Bond when Daniel Craig retires from the role after the next 007 movie No Time To Die. Remind him of that now and he laughs it off.
“It’s very humbling, it’s lovely and bizarre to be included in that conversation, but beyond that it’s all very speculative,” he says. “I think at the moment everyone’s concentrating on Daniel Craig in his final Bond film – for me, he’s a fantastic Bond and I’m sad he’s retiring.”
Right now, however, it’s Mr Jones and the legacy of that film’s largely unsung Welsh hero that are uppermost in Norton’s agenda. Tragically, Gareth Jones’ life was cut short on the eve of his 30th birthday in 1934, when he was allegedly shot by Mongolian bandits while travelling in Japanese-occupied China on a fact-finding tour.
“There’s much speculation about Gareth’s death at such a young age and there was a lot of evidence suggesting that it was orchestrated by the Soviet forces as revenge for his blowing the whistle on the hidden famine,” says Norton.
“His stories in the Western Mail were incredibly important. The more we can learn about Gareth Jones and recognise his extraordinary legacy, the better. And the fact is that right now, as politics becomes more polarised, we need more people like Gareth – investigative journalists to uncover the truth, with no ideological agenda attached.
“If this film encourages any future young Gareth Jones, then that’s fantastic. It’s a crime we don’t know more about these forgotten events and hopefully this film will remedy that.”

The magical Huntington Estate Music Festival
The Huntington Estate Music Festival in Mudgee is a magical experience – an event quite out of the ordinary. Beginning on Friday 16 November with the opening of the Art Exhibition, the Festival will come to life over the ensuing week.
“From the 17th to the 25th of November, world-class chamber music concerts will fill the winery’s intimate Barrel Hall,” explained organiser and Huntington Estate owner Nicky Stevens.
“There will be abundant and exquisite food and wine served in the beautiful winery grounds before, during and after concerts. This continues late into the night under stellar skies, and over long and lazy afternoons in the shade of the trees; and the audience and artists mix freely after the concerts.”
A strong sense of place underpins the event – while the quality is world-class, the setting and atmosphere is rustic, relaxed and unpretentious.
“The honey eaters sing their accompaniment from outside the hall, the stage is made of upturned wine crates and pallets, the striking back drop and acoustic magic is provided by a wall of barrels holding fine red wine as it ages (the good musical vibrations help), the food is locally produced and sourced, and some good old-fashioned country hospitality provides the finishing touch.
“The line-up and program for The 29th Huntington Estate Music Festival is a thrilling, youthful and vibrant mix of dazzling international talent exclusive to Huntington, and the very best Australian musicians, both established and up and coming, will be performing a varied and exciting program of chamber music.”
The Festival begins this weekend and includes two free events for the local community. Ticketed concerts include the full music, food and wine experience and start at $180 for the Opening Night.
OPENING of the Art Exhibition Friday 16 November 6pm - 8pm
Curated by Kay Norton-Knight of Rosby’s Sculptures in the Garden. Featuring local artists including Denise Faulkner, Jude Bailey-Preston, Nigel White and Anjee du Terreau.
OPENING WEEKEND of the Music Festival Saturday 17 - Sunday 18 November
Presented in association with Musica Viva, Artistic Director Carl Vine. Featuring Jayson Gillham (Piano), Juliana Koch (Oboe), Amir Farid (Piano) and the Goldner String Quartet and Orava Quartet.
FAMILY CONCERT Sunday 18 November 5pm - 6.30pm
Featuring a 30 minute performance by Mara! Australia’s leading world music ensemble, and a performance by the young local musicians of the Huntington Ensemble Challenge. Children are free, adults $10. Refreshments available at interval or BYO picnic.
MAIN FESTIVAL Wednesday 21 - Sunday 25 November
Presented in association with Musica Viva, Artistic Director Carl Vine. For full line up and program artists click here.
“Huntington Estate has always shared its love for music by providing free and subsidised tickets to local musicians young and old, and hosting a dedicated family concert.”
Over the last two years, following a year of research and community engagement in 2016, Huntington has invested significantly in the Mudgee region’s young musicians through the Huntington Music Development Program funded by Festival audience contributions, via the Ensemble Challenge.
The goal is to provide ensemble playing and performance opportunities to musicians under the age of 25 who call Mudgee home; to inspire, coach and encourage their passion for music.
Working with local music teachers, world class musicians such as Dene Olding OA (Concert Master Emeritus of the Sydney Symphony) and leading music educators like Mark Walton OA (former Head of performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music) as mentors and program leaders, the selected young musicians have been coached throughout the year through a number of workshops and regular rehearsals culminating in a performance on stage at the Music Festival.
“While 2017 had more of an ‘elite’ focus, with participants who were already accomplished musicians, the 2018 program has concentrated on less experienced musicians, with a long term goal to develop and support these young people to continue to love, play and learn their chosen instruments,” continued Stevens.
“We commissioned Mark Walton to write the Huntington Suite tailored to the combination of instruments and skills of our ten musicians ranging in age from ten to 15 years old, and in levels from Preliminary to Grade 6/7 and recruited 2017 Ensemble Challenge alumna Emma McCarthy North to lead the ensemble. Mark, Emma and local music teachers have worked tirelessly with the children over the year to get it performance ready.
"The world premiere of the Huntington Suite will be on Sunday 18 November, from 5pm in the Barrel Hall at the Huntington Estate Family Concert. All are welcome!
“The Music Festival is unique, internationally renowned, and attracts people from all around Australia and overseas. Mudgee, music, food and wine combine to make magic. Come and experience it for yourself.”

Current owners, Tim and Nicky Stevens continue to run the winery by five guiding principles: Estate grown, made and bottled, wines are built to age, the reds are released at four to five years, they are only sold direct and substance is key. The winery has become renowned for their Music Festivals that has been performed for over 26 years. The Huntington Estate Music Festival has been described as “‘one of the best chamber music festivals in the world.”
