y'know im about to go feral on how EVERYTHING is under subscriptions. want this viddy game to run better??? get *insert viddy company name here or or viddy game title here* plus or extra or up your plan to get access to EXTRAS!!

bc the other day, i was making a list of all the different games i might download on my xbox in the future. fallout 76, which has fallout 1st.... which is a $22.99 per a month or $179 a year subscription, just to get better skins etc in the game. i want to download trivial pursuit for me and my dad. but xbox and ubisoft keep recommending "get ubisoft+" which is ANOTHER subscription service through ubisoft. another like $25 a month. like given it could be worth it for me if i got into assassins creed on a bigger level than casual. get EA play to get exclusive sims content!! for ANOTHER $6.99 a month. get xbox games pass (which i have) for $18.95 a month!!! and to be fair, i get EA play for free through xbox game pass. but still.

for example, the other day i updated my nintendo online sub account to the extras pack or whatever.... all bc i wanted to look at the gameboy advance online thing...... but instead of letting me look at it and play super mario world 2 on it on my NORMAL SUBSCRIPTION (which i already had access to on nintendo online snes/game cube or whatever.... and plus i though the GBA platform would have more games than it did (like 10 games but i thought it'd have like 50 or something) i had to change my subscription to the nintendo online plus extras pack for GBA online. but that subscription, was $41.95 this year bc i bought it on sale,... however, next year it'll be $60. like at least its $60 a year and not a month. but i'm still pissed off. i should've been able to get access to this for the $30 a year i was already paying!!! and for a measly 10 games not the like 50 games on the game cube/snes online game offerings.

just. im so sick and tired of EVERY company demanding customers to pay a monthly or yearly subscription for access or extras or for something to run better. who the fuck is made of enough money to afford fallout 1st??? ubisoft+??? like dgmw, i get it if you're SUPER into any of these games. like it's worth $22.99 a month to access extras across the library of ubisoft+ if you're a hella fan of assassin's creed or their other games (ie trivial pursuit). or $6.99 for EA play for the love of sims or every single sports game ever.

just i guess it's burn out maybe that EVERYONE wants your money. a section of your wallet continuously until you cancel. i have to subscribe to my area's local newspaper for $179 a year. i subscribed to an app by the adf (australian defence force) to do job aptitude tests (im ignoring it tbh lol). i subscribe to the NYTs games app for $2.99 a month. i WAS paying $15 a month (but now it's closer to $20) for scribd, which is now everand, for audiobooks. for better use of my xbox, i subscribe to xbox games pass, as i said earlier, for $18.95 a month. and from next year, i'll pay $60 a year for nintendo online (unless i drop down back to the cheaper option to get rid of GBA online). i subscribe for $100 a year to microsoft for the essential apps of microsoft word/powerpoint etc. i pay $100 a year for norton antivirus on my windows laptop that i barely use now.

there's adhd apps that I keep getting recommended on fb that are like $150 a year or something. astrology app subscriptions (that i'll NEVER buy) that are like $15 a month.... as examples of apps that i won't use, but I get suggested all the time on social media. once i get a job, i'll be constantly asked about what tv streaming apps im subbed to as well (none). WHY does EVERYONE want my fucking money???? i am so sick to death of subscriptions.

Universe: Identity V (Night is When the Heart is True AU) Summary: A familiar face returns to When the Heart is True on White Day to collect on a debt. Word Count: 1538

I meant to have this finished by White Day, but at least I finished in time for Norton's birthday? So. Happy Birthday, Norton.

The familiar soft chime of the bell above the gift shop door announced the presence of a customer. Rosario looked up from their book and felt an alarming flutter in their chest when they recognized the man approaching their counter. They ignored it in favor of keeping a professionally neutral countenance complete with a strictly customer service smile. “‘Evening, Mister Campbell. Here for some coffee?”

He snorted. “Mister Campbell was my father,” he said flatly. “It’s just Norton. I’ll take a cup of coffee, but that’s not why I came here tonight.”

Rosario was already moving to the instant coffee machine behind the counter. They selected a few sticks of biscotti to go with his beverage. Biscuits weren’t normally offered to customers, and none of the employees at When the Heart is True ate them. Rosario had encountered them in the bakery and the thought had entered their mind that perhaps a certain hardworking man might enjoy a slightly sweet snack with his coffee, something he probably did not splurge on of his own accord. They had found this impulse alarming, but bought the biscotti to quiet their own mind with the excuse that other customers might eat them regardless. “Alright, Just Norton,” they replied. “What else can I do for you this evening?”

He appeared to be making minimal effort to quell a smirk as he leaned on the counter. “It’s White Day.”

“Are you interested in hearing about our specials?” they recited automatically.

“No. I’m not here to buy anything.” He shook his head, then lifted his chin, imperious as always. “I’m here to collect.”

They heaved a theatrical sigh. Every time prior that Norton Campbell had visited When the Heart is True, it was to demand handouts - not in the form of gifts or samples, but simply something warm to eat and drink. At first Rosario had found his manner abrasive and off-putting, but they had since come to better understand him, and now looked forward to his visits and admired him for his unapologetic pride. After all, why shouldn’t anyone be demanding of basic human needs like warmth and a full stomach? So even as they now pretended to be put out while preparing his coffee, they set the bag of coffee beans, which by now was starting to run low, in full view in hopes that he would see that they’d gone to the higher-end shop this time. Yet again, if he noticed, he made no comment, instead eyeing their current offering warily. “What’s that?”

“Biscotti.” They leaned on the counter, chin in hands. “It’s a biscuit for dunking in your coffee.”

A little smile twitched at his mouth. “That…sounds pretty nice.”

Cookies hardly made a full meal for anyone. Rosario pretended to have an afterthought. “Oh, right, I brought some homemade muffins in with me today, and there’s a few left. Do you want a couple? They have blueberries in them.”

“Sure,” Norton replied.

It took him no time to wolf down the snack. “Right!” he said after a swig of coffee to clear his throat, “As I was saying, it’s White Day, and you owe me. That’s the tradition, right? If someone gives you a gift on Valentine’s Day, you have to give them one in return on White Day.”

Rosario’s eyes widened. Never in a million years would they have guessed he’d expect them to honor the tradition of what he himself had scornfully called a capitalist holiday. But he had indeed given them a box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day to thank them for the food and coffee they’d given him prior. “As I recall, I gave you those chocolates first.” Rosario folded their arms across their chest. “They came out of my own pocket, too.”

Norton shook his head in mock judgment. “I wouldn’t have taken you for the sort who looks a gift horse in the mouth. It doesn’t matter how I got the chocolates. I gave them to you. Did you eat them?”

Their eyes narrowed, lips pursing defiantly. “…yes,” they admitted at length.

His smug smirk made their heart stumble even as irritation burned their face. “So you owe me.”

They hoped their scowl was fiercer than it felt. “What do you want?”

“Dinner,” he said. “A real dinner, at a real restaurant. Someplace well-lit, not one of those dismal candlelit places. I’ve had to spend more than enough of my life by candlelight.”

Immediately Rosario softened. How could they deny such a request when he put it that way? “Alright. Where do you want to go?”

Norton looked pleasantly surprised, as though he hadn’t expected them to agree so readily. “That place around the corner. You know, the one where you can smell the steaks cooking from anywhere on the block.”

They nodded. “I know the one. I’ll stop by tomorrow before work and open a tab for you.“

His mouth quirked into a bemused smile. “Haven’t you ever been on a date before? Both parties are supposed to show up at the same time.”

This took Rosario utterly aback. “I— beg your pardon?”

“Come on, now.” He tilted his head and flashed them a roguish grin. “There’s no need to be coy…although I can’t say I mind it. Let me be crystal clear: I’d like to have the pleasure of your company at dinner. Which will be on you.”

Rosario’s face was on fire, their heart hammering away at an alarming rate. The same boldness for which they’d come to admire him had thrown them completely off guard. Through all the demands he’d made, they never would have expected him to want them. And to make matters even more shocking, they found themself absolutely giddy at the idea of spending some one-on-one time with him. Try as they might to deny it, they admired him for more than his boldness alone. He was driven and passionate as well as handsome and smooth-talking, and in that moment Rosario was forced to accept the fact that they were, for all their attempts at remaining detached, more than a little taken by him.

“You really are a charmer,” they sputtered, sounding considerably less sarcastic than they’d meant to.

His grin broadened as he leaned forward. “Buy me dinner and I’ll show you how charming I can be.”

The way he was looking at them through hooded eyes was too much for Rosario to bear. Flustered, they averted their gaze. “What day and time?” they mumbled.

Although they didn’t dare look at him, they could hear the smirk in his voice as he replied, “I get out of work at five on Monday. That’s your night off, right?”

“It is,” they said, their heart leaping with such enthusiasm that it was almost impossible to keep their voice level. “…Alright, fine. I’ll meet you at the restaurant at quarter after five, then.”

When they glanced at him for approval, they saw a fond smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “For once, I’ve got something to look forward to,” he said. “Don’t be late.”

This last request was delivered much gentler than usual. Combined with the idea of being someone’s ‘something to look forward to’, it touched Rosario deeply. “I wouldn’t dream of it,” they promised, smiling back at him.

Norton’s expression softened. He pushed the brim of his hat back and leaned a little closer. “Huh,” he murmured. “Never seen that before.”

Their hands flew self-consciously to their burning face. “What?”

“Your smile. Your real smile, not your fake customer service one. God. What I’d give to see that again.”

Instinctively they fully buried their face in their hands. “There-…there’s no need for that. I already agreed to the date.”

He tapped on their wrist as a gentle request for them to lower their shield. “Which I will now be spending doing everything I can to get another look at that smile.”

They kept their hands firmly over their face. “Norton,” they pleaded helplessly.

He chuckled. “I mean it. But also it’s fun to watch you get all flustered.”

Only when they heard an odd shuffling did they drop their hands to see what he was doing. He was leaning across the counter to snag another one of the biscottis behind them. When he saw them looking he flashed them another roguish grin. “I gotta get to my next job. Thanks for the coffee and biscuits. And the smile. Especially for the smile.” He thumbed the brim of his hat and winked. “See you Monday.”

Rosario turned their face away into their palm and waved him off with their free hand. “See you Monday, you scoundrel. Be safe at work.”

He waved back with one last parting grin before the door chimes announced his departure. Rosario leaned against the counter, pressing their palm against the wild hammering in their chest. It wasn’t fair that someone could be such a rapscallion and yet so charming. Just a flash of that crooked grin of his could get just about anything. And while thus far he had asked for very little, Rosario had a feeling that if they weren’t careful he might end up sweet-talking them into giving him their whole heart.

As if he hadn’t stolen it already.

Assessing the Business Process Automation System, Upgrades and Cost Efficiency: A University Case Study 2

Introduction

The University is in an unsteady situation its automation systems have aged significantly and are reaching the end of their life due to an increasing risk of component failure, causing extensive downtime and operational inefficiencies. This ensured that the business processes could not be upgraded since the institution lost its chief computer programmer, who had been employed on a contractual basis and thus left because he did not see an increase in his salary. The loss of such an employee meant that critical knowledge and skills in the systems of the university were going with them. Subsequently, widespread problems resulted in the business processes of the university and this triggered customer dissatisfaction.

Several committees were created and nothing became of them. As a final resort, the university decided to outsource the same computer programmer for handling problems related to the automation system. Within a period of just ten days, the programmer upgraded all business process automation systems. Upon success in solving the problem, the programmer sent an invoice to the university amounting to P300,000. Upon verification, only P50,000 of that amount was actually expended for labor and materials. The rest of P250,500 provoked the question whether this was necessary.

This case study would assess the justification for the imposition of the amount of P250,500 by looking at the value of intellectual labor, special expertise, and knowledge management in an organization. The study also looks into how this situation could have been averted through better knowledge management practice on the part of the university. We hope to give a more complete view of the case as we review the literature that addresses these concepts.

Literature Review

Cost Justification for the P250,500

While the direct materials and direct labor costs were only P50,000, there was better justification for the remaining P250,500- this was actually due to the value of the programmer's expertise. According to Kaplan and Norton, what professionals are worth is not the tangible resources used but rather their intellectual capital-the knowledge and experience they possess in solving problems that others can't easily solve. In this case, deep knowledge in automation systems used at university became a way for a programmer to update the system within ten days-the task which may take much more time or be impossible for other people who do not possess similar expertise.

The P250,500 fee stands for intellectual capital invested by the programmer and experience he has had together with possibilities for quick diagnosis and solution of problems that had caused particular operational discontinuity in the university. Specialized know-how, especially in information technology, is very precious because it saves time, reduces risks, and thereby prevents further complications (Peppard & Ward, 2016). The university practically paid for the programmer's capability to come up with an efficient and high-quality solution that could mitigate downtime and regain its operations within a short period of time.

The system architecture, failure points, and optimization strategies of the programmer could not be easily copied by other employees or external contractors. That is, knowledge is asymmetric; as one of the insightful ideas of Stiglitz (2002), one of the parties in a transaction has more or better information than the other. This special understanding of the university's automation systems positioned the programmer in a very unique power position that he exploited for extracting a higher fee for his services.

IT system failures, particularly in vital systems such as automation, are very costly because of productivity losses, client dissatisfaction, and operational inefficiencies. As Peppard and Ward would say, the P250,500 charge is reasonable in relation to the potential costs that might come from the continued downtime of the systems involved, which are costlier than what will be incurred here. In this scenario, the programmer's intervention restores the operations but also prevents further reputational and financial losses.

Downtime and Its Broader Impacts

Concept of Downtime in IT Systems In institutions such as a university that are totally dependent on automation, the idea of downtime in IT systems is very basic to understanding the scope of costs involved in system failures. Downtime is a much more than an inconvenience and could impact the day-to-day activities of the organization and its long-term survival. In addition, lost productivity, decreased operational efficiency, customer dissatisfaction-all of which provide financial and reputational damage-consequently also include IT failure consequences, according to Peppard and Ward (2016).

In the case of this university, the disruption in business processes caused by its automation failure likely affected not only the internal operations but also its clients: the students, faculty, and staff that rely on the smooth functioning of these systems. For instance, if the system was down during critical times like enrollment or grading periods, this could have caused serious delay, thus frustration among students and faculty. This can be a problem in a very competitive academic environment where disruptions of this kind may force students and staff to look for elsewhere, hence liable to have effects on reputation and bottom line.

Kretschmer and Claussen also demonstrate how short as the downtimes might be, the exponential impact on IT-driven institutions can be very turning. In this scenario, the decision to sack the programmer and not taking all those preventive measures eventually compelled the university to seek the help of emergency contracting to restore the system.

Preventive maintenance is the practice of updation and servicing systems at such an interval that ensures the continuation of keeping them functional and reduces the chances of their breakdown. If this university had done preventive maintenance, then all these could have been prevented from happening. At P250,500, the charge can be seen almost as the cost the university paid for not having measures in place that could prevent such, and letting systems deteriorate to a point of total breakdown. In that sense, the charge reminds one that reactive problem-solving is not free, and the balance shifts towards one using proactive strategies in the management of IT infrastructure.

This relates to the risk management concept. As stated by Peppard and Ward, (2016) at times, some risks need to be recognized and even mitigated even before a single crisis arises. In this case, the university never identified the risks of losing its top programmer and the automation systems that were getting old; therefore, the cost was a lot higher when the risks were finally realized.

How we can relate the Case study 2 in the Knowledge Management course?

One of the major themes of this case is to what extent does knowledge management prevent organizational crises. Knowledge management refers to processes that capture, distribute and effectively use knowledge within an organization (Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995). In this case, the failure of the university to retain critical knowledge when the programmer left created a knowledge gap that led to costly system failures.

Had the university established such a robust knowledge management system, it would have caught and codified knowledge from the programmer, which would have made all the knowledge available at the university even after he left. This would have reduced dependence on that one person since internal teams could address those issues internally without expensive outsourcing. The committees set up to resolve the problem failed as they did not know enough. There is, therefore much said in favor of institutional knowledge sharing and retention.

As also pointed out by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995), knowledge creation and sharing are critical for an organization's performance success. By setting up systems that allow the expertise to be documented and shared, the organization prevents the loss of critical knowledge due to an employee leaving. This is particularly critical in the technology-intensive areas of specialization, where core competencies are seriously concentrated among a few people. If the university was not able to retain and share this knowledge, then an unfortunate position prevailed where it had to pay for reacquiring that expertise at premium rates.

Knowledge transfer is another very critical activity in knowledge management besides knowledge retention. As Davenport and Prusak observe, knowledge transfer that is effective pushes toward innovative ideas, efficiency, and better decisions. In this instance, the knowledge of the programmer was not transferred onto others, and it had become a bottleneck whereby only the programmer would be able to resolve issues within that system. That is an over-reliance that would have been labeled an indication of poor knowledge management practices.

Implications for Future Practice

This case teaches various lessons to organizations regarding knowledge management and preventive maintenance. First, organizations should invest in preventive maintenance strategies such that their systems are updated regularly and serviced in order to prevent costly failures of their systems. In this respect, by being proactive with the management of its IT system, an organization can avoid expensive emergency repairs and decrease downtime.

This makes the case highlight the critical nature of knowledge management in ensuring organizational continuity and resilience. It therefore follows that an organization would need to set up systems which enable it to capture, document, and share knowledge in appropriate ways among all levels within its management structure. It is unique in technology-based industries where few employees have highly specialized knowledge.

In this respect, there comes the importance of intellectual capital. Organizations that mainly run operations through technology and expertise have to invest in retaining and compensating people possessing essential knowledge or skills. Otherwise, loss of valuable expertise would later on reflect in costly consequences.

Conclusion

The university's automation system failure is the best example of importance and knowledge management, preventive maintenance, and value of intellectual capital. P250,500 charge may appear to be too high on first glance, but in the light of the programmer's specialized expertise, the probable cost of continued shutdown of the system, and the failure on the part of the university to implement a preventive maintenance strategy, it is justified. The case therefore emphasizes the need for organizations to invest in knowledge management systems that absorb, preserve, and make accessible critical knowledge to reduce dependency on certain individuals and ensure continuity in the event of staff changes.
