Fall 2024 Behind-the-Scenes Reading

My Fall behind the scenes reading this year is very much a look a my main research project for this semester, which was on Inuit voices in the Arctic.

I am in California visiting family and therefore away from all the books I read and the end of my semester was such a mess that I didn’t have the opportunity to do a book photoshoot then. "Sansa = Ned 2.0 and Arya = Catelyn 2.0" is one of those takes where you can just tell people are more attached to the aesthetic than anything. "The Stark girls are most like the parent they look least like" sounds good on paper and people run with the idea, regardless of how it actually fits into the story. A majority of the justification relies on misinterpreting all of their characters + a healthy dose of fanon. What gets me is that this is the same fandom that insists that Lyanna, only compared to Arya in the text, is equal parts Arya and Sansa but Ned and Catelyn, two fully fleshed-out and complex characters, have to be more like one girl or the other? There's just nothing in the story to justify being so adamant about these comparisons. Arya and Sansa have parallels with both of their parents but at the end of the day, they are unique characters with their own stories. I'll never understand why people want to flatten these complex characters down to their most basic tropes and fit them into restrictive boxes just for a "poetical~" comparison.

i'm not saying you can only write what you know, but i spent the majority of my teen years writing my chemical romance RPF, from the point of view of a vampire-obsessed, genderbent, ex-catholic, dungeons and dragons nerd, living in a dim and fuggy basement in the early 2000s, whose inner turmoil and particular branch of white suburban depression was near autobiographic for me in my late teen phase of nihilistic remonstration against mainstream cheeriness. not even the cultural challenge of trying to write like a grotty kid from new jersey as an english teen from the home counties could create a rift big enough to separate me from the instinctive, intrinsic understanding of gerard way's millenial disillusionment and weird-kid, outsider status.

what i'm saying is, the point of difference between me and band guy gerard way was like. spiritually and emotionally fractional.

Omg, I went straight for the Erika Ishii voice in DATV so I didn't pay attention to the fact that one of the British voices was Nine Fingers Keene in NG3, and apparently they let her use her northern accent????!? I'm weirdly emotional about that. You NEVER hear Northern English accents in these kinds of roles except for when Game of Thrones did it. It's always the funny stupid person accent.
