Fall 2024 Behind-the-Scenes Reading
My Fall behind the scenes reading this year is very much a look a my main research project for this semester, which was on Inuit voices in the Arctic.
You’ll have to forgive this not having a picture. I am in California visiting family and therefore away from all the books I read and the end of my semester was such a mess that I didn’t have the opportunity to do a book photoshoot then. To be fair, a lot of these readings are academic articles, which might make for a boring header image. Once I’m home from California, I’ll see about getting a…

"Sansa = Ned 2.0 and Arya = Catelyn 2.0" is one of those takes where you can just tell people are more attached to the aesthetic than anything. "The Stark girls are most like the parent they look least like" sounds good on paper and people run with the idea, regardless of how it actually fits into the story. A majority of the justification relies on misinterpreting all of their characters + a healthy dose of fanon. What gets me is that this is the same fandom that insists that Lyanna, only compared to Arya in the text, is equal parts Arya and Sansa but Ned and Catelyn, two fully fleshed-out and complex characters, have to be more like one girl or the other? There's just nothing in the story to justify being so adamant about these comparisons. Arya and Sansa have parallels with both of their parents but at the end of the day, they are unique characters with their own stories. I'll never understand why people want to flatten these complex characters down to their most basic tropes and fit them into restrictive boxes just for a "poetical~" comparison.
#arya stark#sansa stark#catelyn stark#ned stark#house stark#asoiaf#BORING YAWNING SLOPPY#notice how these takes never come with actual evidence from the books to make direct comparisons from the text?#/ned is a gentle quiet poitican/ and he physically attacks someone + constantly shows his frustration and voicing his opinions#our first introduction to him is him executing a man and we know he's done so several times that year#he says that his toddler son needs to grow up and stop being afraid of a giant wolf cause /winter is coming/ and Northern life is hard 😭#/Cat is a feral wild woman/ and her chapters are full of her holding her tongue and trying to mediate situations#people literally switch their characterizations cause the second a woman shows emotion she's /feral/#and a man can be the most wild unhinged character ever and still be /kind/ and /gentle/#like yeah fanon sansa is fanon ned 2.0 and fanon arya is fanon cat 2.0 but their actual characters are more complex then that#the only valid /2.0/ comparison is between Lyanna and Arya but somehow she gets split between Arya and Sansa 🥴#my hourly frustration at this fandom not caring about the story and only being here for /the vibes~/#like Ned hates Tourneys and protests one as a waste of resources while Sansa is planning a Tourney and using resources while winter#is arriving and smallfolk are going hungry...but she's Ned 2.0? Where? How? Huh?#And yeah Ned deals with politics in KL but that's relatively a small aspect of his character#and even him constantly speaking his mind and challenging Robert directly is the exact opposite of Sansa's approach 😭#/courtesy is a Lady's armor/ vs. /I'm gonna tell Robert he's an idiot right to his face/ oh yeah totes the same#Arya is the character following his advice and guidance for a reason just saying#like if Sansa was doing the same I could see it but she..isn't? Her approach is much closer to Catelyn's than Ned's#I don't understand why people have all of the sudden decided that the Sansa/Cat parallels are shallow when they're#very similar characters and Sansa's current plot actually revolves around that fact#obviously they're not exactly alike but no two characters are or even meant to be...their comparisons are still very valid#tired of being expected to accept an idea just because enough people repeat it

This is probably the most recognizable and popular bird we have here in the US. The Northern Cardinal is known for its vibrant red plumage. Did you know that the cardinal’s brilliant red color is the result of carotenoid pigments in their diet, which come from berries and seeds? If their diet lacks these pigments, their feathers can appear duller. Cardinals also have regional “dialects.” Cardinals in different parts of their range sing the same songs with slight variations, much like human accents. Unlike many songbird species, female Northern Cardinals also sing. Their song is often more complex than the male’s and may be used for communication during nesting.

One of the most heartbreaking things I've read in a sea of heartbreaking stories from Gaza:

...made. A skull empty of purpose. She was full-term. Her mother carried her for nine long months, through burning nights and weeping mornings, through dust, grief, and sirens. And then, birth. But no life to save. Only silence. The doctors stood helpless, mocked by the limits of their hands.
I saw them, people of medicine, their skilled, sterile fingers trembling. Not from confusion, but from recognition. Teratogenic damage. Developmental failure. Genetic disfigurement, not by chance, but by war. Bombs struck not only buildings, but chromosomes. The weapons, steel, shiny, American, fell not just to destroy the present, but to corrupt the womb. To poison the idea of tomorrow.
What do we call this horror? Radiation? Dioxins? Depleted uranium? Invisible toxins that do not kill quickly, they wait. They embed, cross placental walls, and twist the neural tube. They disrupt life before it begins.
There are more cases. Miscarriages. Premature births. Malformed limbs. Cleft palates wider than sorrow. Spinal cords like broken scrolls. The doctors whisper now, this is no cluster. It’s a pattern. A Lancet study warns of up to 200,000 indirect victims, not from blast wounds, but from genetic harm passed down to generations unborn.
But the world is deaf. It counts the dead by explosions, not deformities. It tracks casualties by limbs lost, not genes shattered.
And here, beneath the rubble, the deepest wound is in the womb. I saw her yesterday. The mother. She didn’t cry. She only looked. Her arms were empty. She had carried a daughter with no brain. But the child had eyelashes. Fingers. And that’s the most terrible thing: that life tried. That the body obeyed. That, even in apocalypse, the cells kept building.
Somewhere, another child may be born marked by air their mother once breathed. And they won’t know why.
They say war ends. That ceasefires come. That healing is possible. But how can it end when it lives in cells? When the placenta becomes a battlefield? When biology becomes the archive of war?
This is not just a war of fire and steel. It’s a war against life. Against women. Against the act of birth itself.
I have seen death, bodies torn, lungs gasping under broken ribs. But never have I heard a silence as loud as when a mother delivers a child already condemned by the sky above her.
And so I write. Not to accuse. Not to weep. But to remember.
Because some weapons do not explode. They incubate.

i'm not saying you can only write what you know, but i spent the majority of my teen years writing my chemical romance RPF, from the point of view of a vampire-obsessed, genderbent, ex-catholic, dungeons and dragons nerd, living in a dim and fuggy basement in the early 2000s, whose inner turmoil and particular branch of white suburban depression was near autobiographic for me in my late teen phase of nihilistic remonstration against mainstream cheeriness. not even the cultural challenge of trying to write like a grotty kid from new jersey as an english teen from the home counties could create a rift big enough to separate me from the instinctive, intrinsic understanding of gerard way's millenial disillusionment and weird-kid, outsider status.
what i'm saying is, the point of difference between me and band guy gerard way was like. spiritually and emotionally fractional.
now johN LENNON on the other hand--
i've been circling the drain of this fucking guy's brain for about two months now and all i have is 800 words and a mounting graveyard of deleted passages to show for it because apparently the inner life of a white man from liverpool in the 1960s is a cultural removal too far for me to comprehend.
#this is so fucking hard honestly i've never felt less secure about capturing a character voice#bring me your gerard ways your pete wentzes your pete dohertys your brian molkos i've written them all i know what they sound like#john lennon? inscrutable#a flippant & posturing facade across genuine mental illness. the silliest and goofiest man in the room. the saddest clown. a bully. a baby.#and then there's the class intersection. the northern sensibilities. not to mention the specifically 1960s toxic masculinity of it all.#anyway i wrote this post instead of miserably turning over my opening 800 words again searching for this elusive fuckin voice#i'm not giving up though we're going to get there kicking and screaming but my god we're going to get there#beatles#john lennon#bandom#writing

also i only just noticed thats motostoke in the bg of peonys photo 🥺 which is really sweet and honestly further ties his bond to kabu if thats where he chose to settle regardless to where he came from in galar prior

#txt.tag#when i went back to the dlc i was like hes so friendly he could technically be from anywhere but it strikes me like theyre supposed#to be northerners of some iteration. couldnt place where bc no solid accent lmao and all of roses voice acting is general posh#not even specifically english#so its still likely he started faking his accent at some point to sound that high class lmao#but bc they fumbled swsh in so many ways and the crown tundra just didnt feel scottish im making them scottish that moved north
