Beginning the Journey
I knew from a young age that I wanted to know more of the world than the small area of it I grew up in, and growing up, I had plenty of ideas about how I wanted to start the journey. My first big step was deciding to go to university out of state, that was my first time leaving everything I knew behind.
I grew up in Alaska, an already isolated area where everyone knew each other and not much else. I had many friends growing up who believed that they would never leave, but I couldn't help but feel there was so much more waiting for me than life in my small town. I knew I wouldn't forgive myself if I stayed.
I decided on Northern Arizona University because it reminisced on the climate I grew up in while still offering newfound freedoms and opportunities. I knew it had a good study abroad program and scholarships that would support my time abroad, and by this time I knew I didn't want to stop exploring the world by just moving states, so I saw this as a chance to further my horizons once again.
I didn't understand at the time of making this decision that the same way I missed and loved Alaska was the same way I would miss and love Flagstaff (the town NAU is in), that is that my appreciation and treasuring of both for not only what they were but all the ways they got me to where I was would feel inspiring and enlightening. Upon touching down in London, I truly felt that every step of my journey had deeply mattered.

Being Trans in College
Deciding to go to college was really hard because I was transgender. Many college, even the one that I am going to, don’t have proper systems to help aid transgender students in transitioning to college. I happened to have an RA who specifically requested his residents chosen names. Other trans students had their deadnames initially posted on their suite doors because their RA’s didn’t think to ask for chosen names.  This is an all too common experience at many schools, and it needs to change. Transgender students have so many other worries when starting college. Moving in to their resident hall shouldn’t be the first thing that knocks them down after taking such a big step to go to college in the first place.
Regarding housing, there is a severe lack of gender inclusive housing. On my campus there is two suites that are made to be LGBT - inclusive in the entire campus, making the maximum amount of people who can live in them 16. That is not considering the fact that some people will specifically want a single which makes it even less. This can potentially put students in uncomfortable situations or even in danger depending on what suite they are put in and with who. On top of this, there is a severe lack of housing that is not separated by gender. The rules for where transgender people can go are not clear even to the people who assign housing.  On my campus, you either hope you get into one of the two gender-inclusive housing option, pay for a single in the gender-neutral housing and still risk getting suite-mates that aren’t LGBT inclusive, or live in the gendered dorms to get a double and still risk getting suite-mates that aren’t LGBT inclusive. It is a major problem that colleges need to address. No one should ever feel remotely unsafe in their suite in which they live, and the fact that many of us are forced to deal with it regardless due to lack of inclusive housing for people.
Another major issue transgender college students have to face discrimination from students, along with teachers who are either ignorant and just don't understand or are very reluctant to even attempt to understand. This isn’t knew, but it still is struggle we face.
TransgenderFirst is raising awareness to all of these issues and more while helping transgender college students make college more affordable. This is an  incredibly important first step to create better opportunities for transgender people who want to pursue higher education.

Emergency: Help Evacuate My Family From GAZA WAR
Dear Humanity,
I'm Haya from Gaza , from a family of 8 people: my parents, two sons, and four daughters (two of them suffer from allergies).
Tumblr media
I've witnessed the evidence of the tragedy that has struck our lives in Gaza, where my family and I have survived amidst numerous previous wars. But today, we face the most dangerous and fierce battle in the current war. The urgent need intensifies for us, as we have nothing left and are unable to secure our basic needs such as food, water, and safe shelter.
Here is our story - On October 7th, our lives changed forever, my family and I evacuated from northern Gaza to southern Gaza, hoping to return soon, but it wasn't meant to be. Our home was surrounded, burned, and then completely destroyed, Our home, once a fortress of hope, now lay in ruins, a stark reminder of our shattered dreams.
The night before we left from the north to the south was terrifying. Shelling sounds were everywhere, making a loud noise that felt like it went through our souls. Every explosions shook the ground like earthquakes, sending shockwaves of fear through our trembling bodies. filling us with fear. The air smelled of destruction and blood, making it hard to breathe. When dawn came, we saw the devastation around us, realizing our home was now a symbol of loss and despair.
We ran into the streets and with each step we took into the unknown streets, we felt as if we were plunging deeper into the abyss of our shattered existence, leaving behind everything we own in our home: Clothes, important official documents, the car, and literally it's almost everything - the enormity of our loss weighed heavily upon us.
Our home it was where we found hope, safety, and made precious memories. Losing it felt like losing years of our lives, leaving us adrift amidst the wreckage of our shattered existence.
youtube
A brief video depicting the devastation that struck our home and our entire neighborhood in Gaza.
Desperate Plea: Escaping Gaza's Allergy Nightmare
I, Haya, suffer from severe allergy to penicillin-derived medications, and my sister, Amal, also suffers from severe allergies to medications from my family such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.
These allergies create a deep sense of fear and anxiety for us, as we live in a constant state of tension and fear of anything that may require a visit to the hospital. We fear being given inappropriate medications due to the unavailability of suitable treatments in Gaza because of war or lack of awareness and not informing the doctor of our allergies, which could lead to serious consequences threatening our lives.

Our dreams are heading towards oblivion in the labyrinth of an uncertain future
My story, along with my siblings, represents a united team of four individuals, three of whom are skilled programmers and one graphic designer. We work as freelancers in the world of freelancing.
Tumblr media
As for my younger sister, she is a student studying at the College of Architecture. She has always carried a big dream in her heart, a dream of being part of changing Gaza, of making it more beautiful and better. She looked forward to the day when she would receive her degree and start building this dream. But the beginning of the war changed everything. The destruction of infrastructure and universities cast shadows of despair over her dreams.
Tumblr media
When I think of my brother in Belgium, I can't help but feel deep sadness. He has been suffering from unbearable anxiety and insomnia since the outbreak of the war. Sleep eludes him at night, and his physical and mental health collapses under the weight of these heavy burdens, negatively affecting his performance at work. Problems and challenges pile up in front of him without the slightest opportunity for rest.
We all feel psychological pressure and extreme anxiety. The war hasn't been limited to external attacks but has deeply infiltrated our daily lives. We search among the rubble for a little safety and the basic resources for survival. Every day comes with a new challenge that we must overcome.
As we sway amidst the rubble of shattered dreams, our souls wrestle and our hearts beat strongly challenging the ravages of war.
Our parents earnestly seek a way to rescue us from this hell, feeling the heavy responsibility for every moment we spend under the shadows of fear and destruction. They dream of a safe place where they can build for us a better future, filled with security and hope, for we deserve life in all its meanings of comfort and peace.
Perhaps this fundraising campaign represents a light in the midst of darkness, it is indeed the only hope we cling to firmly.
I appeal to the world as a whole to hear my cry and the mournful cry of my family in Gaza. We need the helping hand that reaches out to wipe our tears and build a bridge to safety.
Your donation is not just a donation; it's an opportunity to rebuild life and brighten a better tomorrow. Be part of our hopeful story, for we need your hand to start anew.
The purpose of the fundraising campaign
The goal of this fundraising campaign is to rescue my family - my parents, my siblings, and me - through the Rafah Crossing to Egypt, which currently requires $5000 per person. This campaign is our only chance to stay alive, and I humbly request your assistance at this critical time. I will provide you with a comprehensive breakdown of the expenses, committing to transparency and clarity.

The Reede Barn, Aberdeen, SD
Let’s start off 2023 with by providing information about the Reede Barn in Aberdeen, SD.
I knew OF Gus Reede over the last couple of years, as he plays for Northern State.  I met Gus last February (2022) when I travelled to Aberdeen to watch two games during their “I Hate Winter” games.  Gus got hurt during the first game, so after film session, Gus and I stood on the balcony, just talking.  I was blown away with Gus!
Gus Reede is what’s right with college basketball.  He’s passionate about his school, his team and his teammates.  He grew up in Aberdeen, and he grew up on Northern State University basketball.  His grandfather’s name is on the locker room and the video board.  His parents are big supporters of Northern State basketball.  Gus is an absolute basketball junkies, and his work ethic is incredible......and his improvement as a player has been remarkable, yet not overly surprising when you account for the tremendous work ethic and passion.
While Gus was a tremendously accomplish high school player (he was a 3-time all-conference pick, 3-time all-area selection, and 2-time second all-state honoree), he was coming into a talented, highly regarded (nationally) NCAA Division II program.   Here’s the article from the time when Gus committed to Northern State:  https://eu.aberdeennews.com/story/sports/2017/08/08/roncallis-gus-reede-chooses-northern-state/44732931/
He redshirted his freshman season.  As a redshirt freshman the following season, he scored 22 points.....for the season.  As a redshirt sophomore, he scored a total of 57 points for the season, averaging 2.9 points per game......and he continued to work and work and work......and then, during the 2021-22 season, he was given more of an opportunity, and started 31 games for the Wolves.  He scored 320 points, averaging 10.3 points per game.  This season, he’s starting and averaging 11.5 points, while shooting 50% fg, 47% 3-pt. fg & 85% ft.  This includes a game against TX A&M Kingsville where Gus knocked down 8 3′s and had 31 points.
Gus just has such tremendous passion for the Northern State Wolves, and he just wants to help his team win so bad.....Since he arrived on campus at Northern State, the Wolves have gone 26-7 (redshirt year), 26-6, 19-2, 20-12....and are now 10-3 thus far this season.
With the “Covid Year”, Gus technically has another year of eligibility next year.
................
Gus is the oldest of Nathan & Jackie Reede’s four children, and the family grew up in Aberdeen.  Nathan’s Dad, Neil Reede, owned and operated Upper Plains Contracting, headquartered in Aberdeen.  That business carries on the family name today as Reede Construction.  Neil loved Northern State, and Northern State basketball.
Tumblr media
Nathan Reede now runs Reede Construction, and under his leadership, the company has exploded.
As Nathan & Jackie’s children drew up, indoor practice facilities in the upper midwest were scarce.  Nathan wanted his children - who really liked basketball - to have a place to practice, and he realized that he had some extra space in his shop......so he made the decision to build an indoor facility, now known as the Reede Barn.  When the decision was made, however, Nathan decided to do it right.....and the facility is awesome!  It’s unique and special, and today has taken on a life of its own.
Here’s a great article on the story of the Reede Barn: https://aberdeenmag.com/2018/04/barn-burner-basketball/
The Reede Barn has their own
Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/www.upci.biz/
Twitter account: @TheReedeBarn
.....and Instagram account: the_reede_barn
While I was in Aberdeen for the Inaugural Small College Basketball Champions Classic, I went to visit the Reede Barn myself, and spent time with Gus and his Dad, Nathan.  They were kind enough to spend a good deal of time with me, showing me around and tell me stories.  Below are a few photos that I took, and there is even more to this awesome facility.
For basketball junkies, this is just a wonderful facility, now filled with stories and memories.
...............
I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know Gus Reede.  What a highly impressive person.  I was blown away when I first met Gus, and I’m blown away today.  He loves his family, Northern State basketball, his teammates and his school.

Ancient redwoods recover from fire by sprouting 1000-year-old buds
Tumblr media
Article | Paywall free
When lightning ignited fires around California’s Big Basin Redwoods State Park north of Santa Cruz in August 2020, the blaze spread quickly. Redwoods naturally resist burning, but this time flames shot through the canopies of 100-meter-tall trees, incinerating the needles. “It was shocking,” says Drew Peltier, a tree ecophysiologist at Northern Arizona University. “It really seemed like most of the trees were going to die.”
Yet many of them lived. In a paper published yesterday in Nature Plants, Peltier and his colleagues help explain why: The charred survivors, despite being defoliated [aka losing all their needles], mobilized long-held energy reserves—sugars that had been made from sunlight decades earlier—and poured them into buds that had been lying dormant under the bark for centuries.
“This is one of those papers that challenges our previous knowledge on tree growth,” says Adrian Rocha, an ecosystem ecologist at the University of Notre Dame. “It is amazing to learn that carbon taken up decades ago can be used to sustain its growth into the future.” The findings suggest redwoods have the tools to cope with catastrophic fires driven by climate change, Rocha says. Still, it’s unclear whether the trees could withstand the regular infernos that might occur under a warmer climate regime.
Mild fires strike coastal redwood forests about every decade. The giant trees resist burning thanks to the bark, up to about 30 centimeters thick at the base, which contains tannic acids that retard flames. Their branches and needles are normally beyond the reach of flames that consume vegetation on the ground. But the fire in 2020 was so intense that even the uppermost branches of many trees burned and their ability to photosynthesize went up in smoke along with their pine needles.
Trees photosynthesize to create sugars and other carbohydrates, which provide the energy they need to grow and repair tissue. Trees do store some of this energy, which they can call on during a drought or after a fire. Still, scientists weren’t sure these reserves would prove enough for the burned trees of Big Basin.
Visiting the forest a few months after the fire, Peltier and his colleagues found fresh growth emerging from blackened trunks. They knew that shorter lived trees can store sugars for several years. Because redwoods can live for more than 2000 years, the researchers wondered whether the trees were drawing on much older energy reserves to grow the sprouts.
Average age is only part of the story. The mix of carbohydrates also contained some carbon that was much older. The way trees store their sugar is like refueling a car, Peltier says. Most of the gasoline was added recently, but the tank never runs completely dry and so a few molecules from the very first fill-up remain. Based on the age and mass of the trees and their normal rate of photosynthesis, Peltier calculated that the redwoods were calling on carbohydrates photosynthesized nearly 6 decades ago—several hundred kilograms’ worth—to help the sprouts grow. “They allow these trees to be really fire-resilient because they have this big pool of old reserves to draw on,” Peltier says.
It's not just the energy reserves that are old. The sprouts were emerging from buds that began forming centuries ago. Redwoods and other tree species create budlike tissue that remains under the bark. Scientists can trace the paths of these buds, like a worm burrowing outward. In samples taken from a large redwood that had fallen after the fire, Peltier and colleagues found that many of the buds, some of which had sprouted, extended back as much as 1000 years. “That was really surprising for me,” Peltier says. “As far as I know, these are the oldest ones that have been documented.”
... “The fact that the reserves used are so old indicates that they took a long time to build up,” says Susan Trumbore, a radiocarbon expert at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry. “Redwoods are majestic organisms. One cannot help rooting for those resprouts to keep them alive in decades to come.”
