Brodsky passionately loved Venice. He came here seventeen times and always in winter.

He wrote a postcard essay to this city, "Watermark".

Postmodernism - Info Dump

It takes place predominantly in the US, in 2018; in-game locations are either tacked on to real-world ones or stand in for them. Vesuvia is a stand-in for Los Angeles, a huge city in Southern California that’s really more like 80 little cities tacked together. 

Nadia technically grew up in Wales, but her family travels almost constantly, so she was raised by a team of au pairs, tutors, and her sisters. She went to university for political science and history, and a conservatory program in France right after for cello performance, and she's been playing chess competitively since she was like twelve. She left home officially when she was 24 and joined a traveling philharmonic, touring the US for a few years (which is how she met Lucio). She got involved with a few political organizations while she was touring, then got hired as a manager for a gubernatorial campaign in Washington State, then a senatorial campaign for the national Congress, and decided to move to politics full-time. She moved back to Vesuvia and worked as an administrative director for the Performing Arts Center while she ran for city council and volunteered, and after that, she decided to run for mayor. She eloped with Lucio in Barbados because they drunkenly decided she'd be more electable if she were married (which actually worked, and at the congratulations-party he threw her, she presented him with a “trophy husband” t-shirt as a thank-you). She and Lucio live in a penthouse apartment with separate bedrooms, their birds, and his dogs. She’s occasionally seen in the background of his streams, still breaks out her cello when she needs to think, and in the time she has that's not political events/galas, regular mayoral work, etc., goes to assisted living centers to play chess with a few retired champs and their friends

Lucio, like I said, grew up in suburban Jersey, moved to Manhattan, then ran off to Vesuvia instead of college to model when he was eighteen. (x) He met Nadia and some other musicians at a club in Vesuvia after a performance, and he was there with a bunch of other models after a shoot; she took him home with the intention of banging him, but he passed out on her couch, and they were occasional FWBs from that moment on. He has a weekly livestream that started as makeup tutorials and devolved into him talking and drinking wine at 9am, runs two nightclubs (the Palace and the Coliseum), is working on launching a third (the Lazaret, but it keeps running into delays), and also owns a handful of retail and residential properties along the waterfront. 

Julian and Portia were born in northern Russia (Nevivon is a suburb of Arkhangelsk); when the Soviet Union collapsed, their family (Pavel, Ilona, and Lilinka) fled west, intending to emigrate to the US, where Lilinka’s partner Mazelinka was making arrangements for them. Pavel and Ilona were separated from the kids and Lilinka when they were traveling through the Balkans, and never made it out. Lilinka brought the kids to Mazelinka’s place in north Chicago, and officially adopted them a year or so later. 

Julian went to Vesuvia for college, the East Coast for medical school, and then returned to Vesuvia for his residency program, to train under Nazali, who runs the surgical program at Vesuvia County General Hospital. He did a brief tour with Doctors Without Borders as part of his training as a trauma surgeon, and was recently (2017) promoted to head of the Emergency Department at VCGH.

Portia went to college for hospitality management and got a job as an assistant manager at a hotel in St Louis fresh off graduation, so she up and moved away from all her friends and family...and the hotel went out of business six months later. Julian offered his place in Vesuvia, since he was leaving for his tour with DWB, so she moved out west to his apartment, got antsy being unemployed, and decided to make it a permanent move. She got a job serving at Red Lobster, got her own apartment, eventually found a gig at the night desk of a hotel a couple times a week, and left Red Lobster to be a sales associate at Home Depot because the tips were crap anyway. Nadia came in one day, they ended up spending almost two hours talking about the projects she was working on, and Nadia offered her a job as her assistant at City Hall a few days later. So now she works 8-4, M-F as Nadia's assistant, plus a couple nights a week at the hotel and weekends at Home Depot, and volunteering at their synagogue.

Muriel was born in Kazakhstan; his parents were relief workers during the Afghan Civil War, who ended up giving him up to an American relief organization when he was three because they were terrified he'd get caught in the crossfire. He went into the foster system in the Southwest and popcorned between foster homes (he had a couple good ones, a couple bad ones) and a group home where he met Asra when he was around ten. They were completely inseparable, and had plans for Asra to move in with Muriel when he aged out of the system, but shortly after Muriel turned 18, Asra's parents tracked him down and they were reunited. Muriel stayed with the Alnazars in Flagstaff for a couple months, and they helped him find out what happened to his family (after being separated from Asra and fleeing to the US, Aisha and Salim started working with an organization that reunites refugee families in asylum countries), including a friend of his parents and grandparents who now lived just outside of Vesuvia. Muriel moved in with Khamgalai and helped her around the house for a few years, took some community college courses, and held a few odd jobs (warehouse, delivery driver, maintenance), including volunteering at the Vesuvian Humane Society, until he had enough money to get his own place around 23-24. He reconnected with Asra (and met Canis, and later Valentin) around the same time, because Asra & Canis went to UC-V for college, and got a job as a bouncer at the Coliseum. (x) He gave up his apartment, closed all his back accounts, and moved out to the woods, living out of a tent, his truck, and an out-of-commission van his old delivery boss had given him for parts, working for cash-only businesses like landscaping and contracting and showing up to PT when he had the money. Eventually, he made enough money to buy the plot of land he was living on, rebuilt his van as a mini-house (there's an outdoor shower and a solar generator, too), and adopted a wolfdog from the Humane Society because he was reasonably sure he had enough space for her to be comfortable.

And Asra was born in Syria; his parents were both professors/writers and political persons of interest during the Damascus Spring. In taking them in for protection, the US government separated them from Asra and place him in foster care when he was 6-7. He met Muriel in a group home and popcorned between foster homes in a similar fashion until he was twelve, when his parents found him and took him out of the system around the time Muriel aged out.  They moved to Arizona, where he met & befriended Canis in high school, and they ended up going to college together at UC-Vesuvia. Canis moved out of the dorms his sophomore year, when Valentin was looking for a roommate for law school; Asra moved in with the two of them the year after, and they've been roommates ever since. He wants to be a social worker, but decided to take a break for a bit after college before going for his MSW, so he freelances as a magician for parties, DJs at the Palace, and sells witchy crafts on Etsy with Muriel.
