Viktor Fries was born in Denmark, an only child to two very loving parents. He'd always had a love for the cold, which grew into a love for winter, which grew into a love for cryogenics. His parents couldn't get him enough books or research papers written about the subject, so his eventual decision to pursue it in higher education came as no surprise. At the time, Gotham University and WayneTech were the leading institutions in cryogenic research, so Viktor packed his bags and ventured off to America.

Kirk Langstrom was born a sickly little baby at Gotham General. He was born with Chediak-Higashi syndrome, which not only caused his albinism, but made Kirk very prone to bacterial infections, especially when he was younger. It would also cause motor issues as Kirk aged, resulting in the need of mobility aids like canes or a wheelchair. As a child, Kirk was teased for his appearance, likened to a vampire - or, on one occasion, an albino bat another kid had found and presented to him. Instead of being offended, this moment was what kickstarted Kirk's love for bats, and eventual pursual of chiropterology.

And for Hugo Strange....well, no one really knows where he came from.

The three met when they were all in college, and they became friends almost instantly. They were three smart outcasts who had little to no real friends before this, so naturally they latched onto one another. Hugo a little more than the other two, but I'll get into that.

For the time they were in college, they were good for each other! But as most things go, they drifted a bit after college ended. Viktor by now had fallen in love with Nora and gotten his job at WayneTech, and Kirk had gotten the opportunity to take a research trip to study Bracken Cave (which is where he'd meet his eventual wife, Francine). This left Hugo mostly to his own devices, which he put towards his career at Arkham Asylum and eventually becoming the head of it.

When Kirk eventually returned from his trip, they reconnected with one another. Now here's where I'm gonna talk individually about what happened to Fuck These Guys Up.

Chronologically, Nora getting sick and Fries' accident is what happens first. When Nora started getting really sick, Viktor and her had no idea what it really was, only that it had the potential to kill her if they didn't find a treatment. Viktor's desperation to find it would eventually lead him to Hugo, who agreed to assist Viktor in his research. When Viktor and Nora mutually decided to freeze her to give Viktor more time, Hugo allowed them to build the machine that would freeze her in an abandoned room in the basement of Arkham (which Hugo was using for his own experiments).

Viktor panicked during the process of Nora freezing, and went to turn the machine off in the middle of it, not fully thinking through what he was doing. It caused the machine to malfunction and the chamber (with Nora in it) to explode outward, releasing everything that had been meant to cryogenically preserve Nora out into the room. The injuries and exposure to chemicals should have killed them both, but the temperatures (and medical assistance) managed to preserve the both of them, though it left Viktor as a living but slowly rotting corpse, who is both being killed by the cold and needs it to keep living in whatever state he's in now.

Hugo was actually the one to find the both of them. Though he had personally never cared for Nora, he followed the plan she and Viktor had laid out, making a new chamber to preserve her while he had a suit specially made for Viktor in order to keep him alive. With a tracker installed inside of it so Hugo could know where he was at any time.

This is probably a good time to cut and explain what's wrong with Hugo. He is...insanely devoted to both Kirk and Viktor. They were both his first friends and he loves them very much and he will Keep Them at Any Cost.

So after Viktor awoke, and realized that Nora had been preserved (even though part of him didn't want that anymore), Hugo instructed him to begin working on a cure for her. Hugo couldn't care less if she died he'd get Viktor to himself then, but Viktor had grown dangerously depressed after the accident and the thought of one day being reunited with a cured Nora was the only thing motivating him to stay alive.

Because Nora's chamber is in the basement of Arkham Asylum, Hugo has control of when and for how long Viktor can visit her. If he doesn't make sufficient progress on her cure, he isn't allowed in.

Now, onto Kirk. He had no idea that was all happening, as their contact with one another had been limited, even after reconnecting. One day, though, Kirk had mentioned his interest in changing his current study to focus on his condition, CHS, instead of his bats. Mostly because he was worried about progressing into the accelerated phase, as most people with CHS do. But Hugo suggested instead that he could figure out some sort of treatment for Kirk - and don't worry, you can just go back to your bats! I promise it'll work; in fact, it'll have you feeling like Batman!

So Kirk, suffering from chronic pain and various disabling motor issues, agreed happily. He visited Hugo's lab when the "treatment" was finished and received two injections in the neck, which turned into those two scars. When it didn't work after a couple of days, Kirk was disappointed, and was ready to tell Hugo that he needed to try something else when something...happened.

Kirk blacked out for a couple of hours and woke up shirtless, covered in blood in an empty alleyway. And, strangest of all, he wasn't in pain.

And this kept happening. Every couple of nights he would black out and return home bloody. He attempted to hide this from his wife, but something like that can't stay under wraps forever, so when she found out she urged him to talk to Hugo and figure out what the hell that "treatment" did.

So he did (rather angrily, of course). Hugo would explain that the treatment was actually an experimental chemical he'd developed to be able to turn humans into animals, specially developed for Kirk to turn "at will" instead of being stuck like that permanently. Because of Hugo choosing a vampire bat as the animal for the specific "treatment" developed for Kirk, he would need to feed on blood while in bat-form, thus the reason he was bloody every time he awoke from his blackouts.

There was only one bonus to the transformation. The concoction was, actually, a sort of cure. The bat form didn't have the same chronic pain or issues that Kirk's normal body did. But it came at the cost of being a mindless, bloodthirsty monster.

All he needed to do, Hugo said, was figure out how to become the bat instead of letting it take over, and then he'd practically be the perfect creature!

He would have to keep coming to Hugo for regular injections, though.

Kirk initially, obviously, refused - he wasn't a monster, and he didn't want to hurt anyone or anything just to help himself. But he kept thinking about it. And thinking about it. Could he really tame the bat, and live as something powerful and strong? Something he'd never been?

It weighed on his mind so much that he inevitably returned to Hugo, just to try it. What he didn't know at the time was that the injections were purposefully addictive, growing worse and worse the more he returns to take them.

Miscellaneous Data From My Unhinged Spreadsheet about 2024 fics

The fic with the highest percentage of private bookmarks is you can call me, call me, anytime which is a little surprising.

Out of 14 published fics, 11 were E, 1 was M and 2 were T, which is a very different distribution than usual, but that’s because 10 of the 14 fics were kinktober lol.

I wrote David/Patrick, Alex/Henry, and June/Nora. Also started a Stevie/Alexis kinktober fic that I have yet to finish.

1 title came from canon, 1 didn’t have a source, and the other twelve were from the following artists (1 each): The Bens, Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, Regina Spektor, the Neighbourhood, MUNA, Chapterhouse, The Dixie Cups, West Side Story, Noah Reid, Matt Nathanson, and Blondie.

Highest kudos to hits ratio is a long winter of indifference

I published 8 fics in October, 2 in November, and one each in January, February and March. Not publishing anything in April broke a 2.5 year streak of publishing at least one fic per month (October 2021-April 2024) and I had a lot of feelings about it.

My average fic length this year was 1,645 words.

Stats specifically about Kinktober

Ten total fics and 13,792 words published so far - hoping this updates before the end of the year.

Five were David/Patrick, 4 were Alex/Henry and 1 was June/Nora

3 were David POV, 2 were Patrick POV, 3 were Alex POV, and 1 each were Henry and June POV.

Longest was I feel dizzy, I feel sunny, I feel fizzy and funny and fine, because apparently I have a lot to say about Patrick in lingerie, which is very valid of me tbh.

Shortest was you can call me, call me, anytime, which was epistolary.

Most popular by hits was head in the clouds but my gravity’s centered. Least popular by both hits and kudos was I know it gets hard just to breathe sometimes (I’m never gonna forget your name) which was breathplay so that’s fair.

The Rest of 2024

I have an exchange fic to finish and also am really hoping to finally get the exes to lovers fic finished. Potentially other kinktober fics, and maybe if I’m really on a roll, either the black swan au or the pretty princess fic. We’ll see!

"you should keep this, you need the help too" she says insistently. Nora shakes her head with an eye roll

"baby, Helaena and Daella are here everyday to Cook for me. You need this more" Nora says holding stev's hands "get used to it. We want to help you"

"and If you don't stop trying to work, I will put a health and gps tracker on you that alerts grandfather and Aemond every time you strain yourself too much" Helaena adds.

Stev shakes her head pouting. Holding little bundle that is dove close to her chest. "Otto do you hear the threats they are giving your wife?" She jokingly calls.

"I hear them and condone every single one" he says simply opening his mouth to let jae feed him a piece of The cake.

Aemond comes over with two bottles of water giving Nora and Stev one each. "You two need to drink" he reminds.

Nora takes hers smirking at Stev. Stev sighs "aemond, you don't need to worry ab-"

Cherub and hera giggle to themselves. "Uncle Aemy is funny" Cherub says. Hera nods

“That guy” is Tyrian, Salem’s personal attack dog. Qrow got here so fast because he’s been following you this whole time and taking out a lot of the Grimm on your tails. Salem sent Tyrian after Ruby because she has Silver Eyes, but I still don’t know why the mission was to kidnap her and not kill her

As for what’s going on... Well there’s a whole secret war going on that you kids have only dipped your toes into

The always people oriented Nora, the first one to step between Tyrian and Ruby, wants to know WHO he is. Ren, their resident tracker who is already suspicious from that destroyed village that something is following them, wants to know HOW Qrow got here. Jaune, always focused on the safety of his friends, and even more so after the trauma fest of Beacon, wants to know WHY Ruby

And Ruby, ever the protagonist, is thinking more big picture of WHAT the hell is really going on that Qrow and her father clearly didn’t want to tell her

Altered Destiny

= Three =

Glynda Goodwitch's breath hitched as she saw the massive boarbatusk pacing along the top edge of the cliff. The shine of reflected light of two pieces of easily recognizable pieces of equipment made her heart race. Were they too late? With a sudden snarl as the bullhead slowly descended to get a better view of the area, Glynda lashed out with her semblance.

A purple light surrounded the massive grimm, lifting it into the air before dashing it against the ground, instantly turning it into a smear of inky ichor. Moments later the bullhead landed and Glynda followed by the medical team disembarked, and began their search. Using the tracker on their own, scrolls then zeroed in on the signal. A signal coming from the bottom of the chasm.

Glynda: No! No! No!

As Glynda's mind fell into her greatest fear, that of losing a student under her care, the EMT's moved into action. The bullhead lifted off, and then moved into a hover over the chasm, before two members of the rescue team repelled out of the air vehicle and down towards the source of the signal.

Glynda met the remainder of JNPR in the waiting room of the infirmary. Cutting them off from just rushing into the room that Jaune was currently occupying. The trio looked up at her, with genuine concern, Miss Nikos eyes the most telling. Glynda could tell she had been crying, the redness and puffiness tell-tale signs.

Glynda: Jaune is okay, and safe but in a coma.

Pyrrha: What... what happened?

Glynda: We still need Jaune to tell us, but what we can figure is he used the launch pads to go into the forest for some reason, and ran into some serious trouble. I must repeat, Jaune is okay, just currently unresponsive.

Nora: When can we see him?

Glynda: In a few minutes. I have a few things to inform you of, before you can. So, please take seats.

The trio moved and took seats on the uncomfortable hard plastic chairs that lined the walls of the waiting room. Once they had settled, and return thier full attention to Glynda, she spoke.

Glynda: We are no sure what has happened, and I am going to be speaking with the headmaster about the pads being active, but I must let you know... we found Jaune at the bottom of the chasm, surrounded by blood.

Ren: I thought you said he was okay? A drop like that should have killed him.

Glynda: The doctors believe that thanks to his massive aura reserves, he was able to survive the fall. Now, while that is a plausible scenario, what is not understood is how he suffered no injuries even though he was surrounded by a rather significant amount of blood.

Nora: So he was hurt?

Glynda: Yes, he was at one point, but upon our arrival we found him whole and breathing, just unresponsive. But that is not the end of the uncharacteristic situation.

Pyrrha: How did he manage to fall into the chasm?

Glynda: We found a rather large boarbatusk nearby, we think it knocked him over the edge. We disposed of it, and then set about securing Jaune. Who is now being thoroughly examined.

Ren: So he survived... which is explainable, but you said uncharacteristic situation. What do you mean?

Glynda: It is about the condition of him when we found him. His body has been altered, and we have no clue as to how.

Pyrrha: What do you mean?

Glynda: It is perhaps better that I show you. It would be faster than trying to explain it. Please follow me.

The trio rose from their seats and followed Professor Goodwitch into the main hallway of the infirmary. She led them in silence past many empty rooms, til they stood before the closed door of the last room. Glynda turned to regard the three before opening the door and stepping aside to allow them to enter.

What they saw caused them all to stop in shock. Their eyes wide and mouths agape.

Pyrrha: How? What? This is not Jaune!

Nora: Who is this?

Ren: (Turns to look at Professor Goodwitch) Is this some type of sick joke? Where is Jaune?

Glynda: This is not a joke. We have been running every test we can think of. We have checked her fingerprints, blood matching and are even doing a DNA sequencing and Aura Pattern analysis. So far, everything we've done tells us this is Jaune Arc.

Pyrrha: But...

Nora: That's a girl! That's not our Fearless Leader!

Glynda: I don't know what else to tell you. Or how to prove this is who we say it is. But this is how we found Jaune at the bottom of the chasm.

Pyrrha: This is not possible. I know people can change genders, but not magically like this! I mean, Jaune was a he this morning!

Glynda: Again I don't know what to tell you, and until Jaune wakes up and tells us what happened, we don't have any answers but what the tests are telling us.

Ren: Any idea when that may happen?

These last couple days/weeks/month I have been in a horrible mood, but the last two days of December I had sudden change in behavior and attitude.

I got hit with a surge chutzpah. Workouts became slightly easier. Even though I was running on fumes (aka massive lack of sleep) I don't feel exhausted like I have for the past few months.

And I gotta give up for the New Year and the Death of this Challenge. Seeing the days turn into hours with the Challenge made Heart Grow 3 Sizes... in a Good Way.

Say that Ruby was worried was an understatement. Her stomach was a knot and her throat felt like it was being squished from the inside. It made her feel sick. 

In the most literal way possible, Ruby was worried sick.

Her gaze was fixated on the aura tracker on Nora's scroll. Oscar was low on aura, the bar below his icon was of an annoying yellow. 

Yang hadn't explained what had happened and because of that, her mind was going places. 

Never mind that the sooner the rest of their group arrived at the mansion her mind may finally find a little bit of peace. She tried he best to ignore the part of her brain that seemed fixated on Oscar's safety specifically. He wasn't a little kid, he was able to take care of himself just fine, yet there she was, eager to see him just to know he was safe. Jaune, Ren and even her sister being a second thought made her feel a deep sense of guilt.

Eventually, the others arrived and the reunions were in place. While she was happy to see her sister, Jaune, and Ren alright, her anxiety was still up, still not calmed down. 

Then she saw him. Worse to wear, his jacket shredded and bruises on his face. But alive. And the sole fact he was alive filled her with immense relief. She wanted to hug him, keep him safe, take care of him as the precious person he was. 

But then she saw her. 

Emerald Sustrai. The illusionist was just two or three steps behind Oscar, who seemed wistfully unaware of the danger this meant. Could she be using her semblance on him? Oscar wasn't careless nor stupid to give his back to this woman, the only explanation there was that he didn't know she was there. 

Oscar didn't know. Oscar, who was already hurt and low in aura, didn't know Emerald was behind him. 

Oscar, the boy she held close to her heart, didn't know he was in danger. 

Ruby saw red. 

She acted without thinking, she rushed to his side. With one hand she pointed Crescent Rose at the criminal and with the other she held Oscar close to her, to keep him safe. 

Emerald cursed, dodging Ruby's attack while Oscar yelped, taken by surprise by the sudden hug. 

"Stay away from him." Ruby threatened her voice deadly cold. 

"This is a misunderstanding, I didn't do anything to him!" Emerald replied.

"A misunderstanding? I don't believe you." 

But before she could continue with her threats she felt Oscar struggle on her embrace, trying to separate the two. 

"Ruby, wait. She's telling the truth." Oscar hurried to say. "She helped me, in fact."

"She… helped you?" Ruby asked, finally lowering her weapon.

"Salem kidnapped me, but Emerald helped me escape." Oscar explained, "She is not with Salem anymore."

Ruby could barely focus on what Oscar was saying. Kidnapped? It felt like a slap in the face, Oscar had been in danger, in Salem claws and Ruby had no idea. She wasn't there to stop, to save him, to protect him.

Apparently Ruby's despair was palpable in the hair, since Emerald realized very quickly it wasn't her place to be. "Im going inside, I'll leave you two alone." 

Oscar nodded, right now he was more worried about how quiet Ruby had suddenly become. 

"Ruby?" He called, and that made Ruby snap out. 

"Oh, Oscar, Im so sorry. I should've been there." Ruby said, and now without the need to use Crescent Rose, she properly hugged him, afraid that if she let go he would be taken away again. 

"is not your fault. I'm fine now." Oscar says, to comfort. 

Right, he was fine now.

He was alive, he was safe. 

Safe in her arms.
