the reason that the ending of smile 2 is so effective is the same reason the ‘gordy’s home’ scene in NOPE is so effective,, you don’t see the actual horrific act of violence, you’re just left with the aftermath and it lets your brain fill in the in between

Nope (2022) horses
Tumblr media
Rating: ƱƱƱƱƱ (perfect)
Yes I can admit that bad things happen to the horses in this movie so it is not suited to the more sensitive among the horse lover crowd but it is balanced out by the main characters love for the humble horse and the beauty of the horse imagery contained within this film

Maybe not quite what you had in mind, but I hope close enough! (I kind of also wanted to draw the Stagehand carrying the Guide like Sophie had to carry Howl upstairs during his temper tantrum.)
Also NO IDEA WHY the text is so blurry. My phone was uncooperative today. I'll type it under a read more button in case you guys can't read it.
*unintelligible sobs*
Yes. I know.
AAAAAAAAA-
YES, I saw.
I spent WEEKS on that script! *SOB*
I know. Storyteller told me.
*more unintelligible sobs*
I rather liked that part, actually.
*whimper?*
Yes.
*bawls*
Let's... get you to your swooning couch...
*squeaky sob*
Yeah, yeah. No prob.
Did you see that comment on the whale prop?
YES, I DID.

So i just watched Nope last night and i think its fuckin fantastic. The way they use sound design so you cant really tell if youre hearing screams or the wind, the way they dont really reveal what you're seeing when Gordy is attacking the cast and crew, the way they hint at the fact that the spaceship is made of a fabric-like material by showing its surface ripple in the wind as it flies by, and then the reveal itself when it unfolds, and the square pattern in the center 'eye' bit that pulsates like a real animal who is trying to threaten something and seem bigger than it. The design of the alien that just looks so strange and otherworldly, and the way they stop hiding it and the vibe of the whole movie changes after OJ finds out that its really an animal.
also on the topic of OJ, the way they show how trauma can effect different individuals in different ways, and that it can be hard to understand each other during times of grief because you arent experiencing things the same way. OJ is quiet, unable to let himself be assertive, and it seems like he feels really empty. its clear to the viewer that he really DOESNT want to have to sell the horses, but thats all he can do at that point. it isnt clear to emerald, though, who tells him that hes a cold hearted son of a bitch for selling 'pops horses' and that he should have fought for them harder. she just doenst understand that he did all he could. but through the movie, she comes to understand that he is hardworking, and he did try, and they rekindle their relationship and dont seem put off by each other anymore.
i love this movie, and its messaging, and the way it shows the creature that they fight against, and god damn the imagery of the house not being rained on but showered by a downpour of blood, the blood of the people that the creature ate, is amazing. and the scene where it shows the process of digesting them is cool too. god it was great.

rant but im a bit scared im going to get attacked
#so im hiding in the tags and book tok is the subject today#psa: skip past the fourth wing rant to see what im actually talking about#so. the abomination that is FOURTH WING#(my review on it was the longest i have ever written lmfao)#dont get me wrong there are good parts to the book!#most of them are plagiarised from like at least 10 other books tho#the one good thing is the dragon worldbuilding (if u could call it that) but honestly. that's probably plagiarised from smt idk#the pacing is horrible#and yes it was weirdly gripping but in the way you are gripped by a nightmare when u cant get yourself to wake up#anyways i havent even got onto the characters yet. fmc has no personality and mmc is tall and dark and brooding#supposedly enemies to lovers and it should have been given unsolved family business but nope they just want to shag UGH#anyways this was triggered by me talking to my friend's friend who is currently reading it and i was honestly gobsmacked#do book tok readers have no critical thinking (not generalisation im just mad)#like she said six of crows was worse than fourth wing#and it just pissed me off because people just read bad literature from book tok just for the smut when there is GOOD SMUT FOR FREE#FANFIC EXISTS BUT THE STIGMA IS TOO MUCH#and so there are authors who are writing terrible plagiarised shit and profiting off it#and then there are the valiant fanfic writers#like pls im so mad rn especially bc there are so many problems w book tok books (gender roles + pick me stuff etc etc)#one thing that really bothers me is the willingness to just ignore how toxic mmcs are just because they're hot or whatever#it's so problematic (also ppl excusing irl people just bc they're funny)#im so angry because book tok (aside from specific few books) is just a den of plagiarism and capitalism#and im also mad because when did the actual appreciation of good writing (not even literature) just GOOD writing die#and it died because of all things people want to read smut like you can have both and free from fanfic#note that this is not a personal attack this is more of a frustration rant and i do not mean to point fingers at all book tok readers#i just want to highlight the problems w it (mainly plagiarism and excusing weird things and normalising other stuff)#space boo screams into the void#book tok#literature#fanfiction

Ariel’s “Siren Song”
So I’ve been reading the Guide to Merfolk book. It dives into the lore in The Little Mermaid (2023) universe and has brought up a lot of interesting things.
One of those things is Siren Songs and their variants. Each song type has different abilities. One of them is the well known “lure” ability, but there are others.
Ariel sings to Eric after rescuing him from the shipwreck, and an observing Sebastian says smthg about her using her “siren song”. As Siren Songs have different types, I believe the song Ariel sings to Eric on the beach is different from the song Vanessa/Ursula sang to him on the rock.
Tumblr media
HEART SONG
An aria sweet as honey dripping
Sends cool hearts aflame and senses slipping--
Lulling the longing to wander and stray,
Following the ballad into the spray.
ERIC’S NOTES: “Yeah, this would never work on me. Not in a million years.”
For context, the blue writing is notes that Eric has left behind. The way the guide book reads, it’s as though we’re in Eric’s study reading this book after he has.
A “Heart Song” is basically a love song. It makes the victim fall senselessly in love with the siren, and is basically romantic brainwashing. I believe this is the song Vanessa/Ursula tried to use on Eric on the rock.
His comment about “it never working on him” makes me even more sure, given that we know, despite using Ariel’s Heart Song, Eric was still not completely in love with Vanessa and was still pining over real Ariel. I believe him saying “it would never work on him” is supposed to be irony/foreshadowing.
Tumblr media
HEAL SONG
A potent siren tune more sharp than flat
Mends bruised wounds from scraps and bites from the bat--
Fighting poison to cleanse and to discard,
Restoring health through the melodic bard.
ERIC’S NOTES: “Hey! I wouldn’t mind this song one bit.”
Meanwhile, I believe the song Ariel sings to him on the beach is her “Heal Song”, a song that cures wounds and ailments.
Ariel does not know human anatomy. She might have books about certain things and knows humans can’t breathe underwater, but she does not know how to medically resuscitate a human, and her pats on Eric’s chest did absolutely nothing. It’s not until she sings does Eric actually come to and open his eyes.
There are several other reasons why I think it’s highly unlikely Ariel used her Heart Song (despite it just not making any sense). For one, Ariel clearly had no idea her interest in Eric was reciprocated when she came to land. She did not know he was out searching for her. And two, when Eric does run into the room and sees her for the first time, he is obviously disappointed because he thinks she’s just some stranger. He’s not “senselessly in love” as a Heart Song would lead him to be.
So I believe Ariel used her Heal Song to revive Eric from drowning, meanwhile Ursula tried to use a Heart Song to brainwash him into being in love with her. Just a tidbit I found interesting.

‘I never understood NOPE’ how could you not ?? It is about the inherent danger of the phenomenon of spectacle. How it uses and abuses and traumatises and exploits. How the only way to stop it is to look away but the inherent nature of a spectacle means you simply cannot help but look, no matter how macabre. In fact, the more macabre the better. It’s the fact that Jeanjacket is the physical embodiment of the spectacle, whilst also making a spectacle out of everything around it. It’s about the social panopticon,, like how could you not see it ??

watched the first few episodes of one piece anime on a whim and realized they made luffy too kind in live action, like his bluntness was a little toned down. i remembered luffy calling shirahoshi a wimp and that he hated her for that. and oh boy, he actually said the same thing to koby. i already forgot this part! well, duh, i watched this 10 years ago.

i especially love this part of luffy where he can be so honest and tell him what he thinks about you and you won't even get angry about it. just look at him, smiling while telling someone he hates them. no malice whatsoever.

Paranormal Star Review
Title: Silverhold Detention Center for the Magically Delinquent #3 Nope, No Regrets
Author: J.B. Trepagnier
Pages:242
Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐(4/5)
Synopsis:
I should have trusted Faust. Now, we’re all in solitary, my sentence is definitely getting extended, and his hands are tied.
But all hope isn’t lost. Faust is visiting me under the guise of interrogating me about our escape. He’s trying to help as much as he can. All my life, I’d never met a single demon. There are now two of them trying to wear the warden down into being allowed to see me. One of them says he’s my brother and the other claims to be my fiancé. I think the only reason Faust hasn’t killed the one claiming I’m supposed to marry him is because he might be my shot at getting out of here if the warden ever relents.
I want to go to Hell more than anything. I’ve wanted to meet my family for the longest time. I’m not wild about the idea of this random fiancé that showed up, but someone in my family arranged that marriage and he came here to get me out of jail. Something isn’t right though. According to Faust, it didn’t seem like my brother and my fiancé were working as a team to get me out of here. I have a feeling one of those men was the reason I didn’t grow up in Hell like I was supposed to. I’m definitely leaving this prison with one of them, but I have conditions. One of them better be honest with me why I was sent away and I was bringing people with me. We had a team when we planned to break out. I was getting all of us out of here. Faust better get on board because I was inviting him too.
