Nope (2022) horses
Rating: ƱƱƱƱƱ (perfect)
Yes I can admit that bad things happen to the horses in this movie so it is not suited to the more sensitive among the horse lover crowd but it is balanced out by the main characters love for the humble horse and the beauty of the horse imagery contained within this film

Maybe not quite what you had in mind, but I hope close enough! (I kind of also wanted to draw the Stagehand carrying the Guide like Sophie had to carry Howl upstairs during his temper tantrum.)
Also NO IDEA WHY the text is so blurry. My phone was uncooperative today. I'll type it under a read more button in case you guys can't read it.
*unintelligible sobs*
Yes. I know.
AAAAAAAAA-
YES, I saw.
I spent WEEKS on that script! *SOB*
I know. Storyteller told me.
*more unintelligible sobs*
I rather liked that part, actually.
*whimper?*
Yes.
*bawls*
Let's... get you to your swooning couch...
*squeaky sob*
Yeah, yeah. No prob.
Did you see that comment on the whale prop?
YES, I DID.

My Star Trek silverware post is going around again, and I'd like to clarify some things:
"Those are normal spoons" the hell they are
"There's nothing wrong with these" I'm happy you live in a world where all the flatware is acceptable, but I super don't, which is why I made a post about it
"What flavor of autism did you get?" Ridiculously strong opinions about Star Trek silverware, thanks
#I also clarified on the original post tags that you can program your own silverware like I'm not an idiot#did I know about the autism when I made the post? nope#but damn do I score high on those tests#I imagine holding those spoons and I can just feel how wrong they are I don't know how else to explain it#I've actually flipped a 180° on the year of hell set. I want them but they are EXPENSIVE#me who used baby silverware until I was like 10#baby spoon for certain kinds of pudding and yogurt is still supreme you will not convince me otherwise#I don't care that I'm in my 30s#still coming to terms with the likely autism but I was peer reviewed and then my life made sense so there's that#at the time I was like why am I getting dragged for having reasonable opinions?#now I find it funny again so we're all good

‘I never understood NOPE’ how could you not ?? It is about the inherent danger of the phenomenon of spectacle. How it uses and abuses and traumatises and exploits. How the only way to stop it is to look away but the inherent nature of a spectacle means you simply cannot help but look, no matter how macabre. In fact, the more macabre the better. It’s the fact that Jeanjacket is the physical embodiment of the spectacle, whilst also making a spectacle out of everything around it. It’s about the social panopticon,, like how could you not see it ??

So i just watched Nope last night and i think its fuckin fantastic. The way they use sound design so you cant really tell if youre hearing screams or the wind, the way they dont really reveal what you're seeing when Gordy is attacking the cast and crew, the way they hint at the fact that the spaceship is made of a fabric-like material by showing its surface ripple in the wind as it flies by, and then the reveal itself when it unfolds, and the square pattern in the center 'eye' bit that pulsates like a real animal who is trying to threaten something and seem bigger than it. The design of the alien that just looks so strange and otherworldly, and the way they stop hiding it and the vibe of the whole movie changes after OJ finds out that its really an animal.
also on the topic of OJ, the way they show how trauma can effect different individuals in different ways, and that it can be hard to understand each other during times of grief because you arent experiencing things the same way. OJ is quiet, unable to let himself be assertive, and it seems like he feels really empty. its clear to the viewer that he really DOESNT want to have to sell the horses, but thats all he can do at that point. it isnt clear to emerald, though, who tells him that hes a cold hearted son of a bitch for selling 'pops horses' and that he should have fought for them harder. she just doenst understand that he did all he could. but through the movie, she comes to understand that he is hardworking, and he did try, and they rekindle their relationship and dont seem put off by each other anymore.
i love this movie, and its messaging, and the way it shows the creature that they fight against, and god damn the imagery of the house not being rained on but showered by a downpour of blood, the blood of the people that the creature ate, is amazing. and the scene where it shows the process of digesting them is cool too. god it was great.

Ariel’s “Siren Song”
So I’ve been reading the Guide to Merfolk book. It dives into the lore in The Little Mermaid (2023) universe and has brought up a lot of interesting things.
One of those things is Siren Songs and their variants. Each song type has different abilities. One of them is the well known “lure” ability, but there are others.
Ariel sings to Eric after rescuing him from the shipwreck, and an observing Sebastian says smthg about her using her “siren song”. As Siren Songs have different types, I believe the song Ariel sings to Eric on the beach is different from the song Vanessa/Ursula sang to him on the rock.
HEART SONG
An aria sweet as honey dripping
Sends cool hearts aflame and senses slipping--
Lulling the longing to wander and stray,
Following the ballad into the spray.
ERIC’S NOTES: “Yeah, this would never work on me. Not in a million years.”
For context, the blue writing is notes that Eric has left behind. The way the guide book reads, it’s as though we’re in Eric’s study reading this book after he has.
A Heart Song” is basically a love song. It makes the victim fall senselessly in love with the siren, and is basically romantic brainwashing. I believe this is the song Vanessa/Ursula tried to use on Eric on the rock.
His comment about “it never working on him” makes me even more sure, given that we know, despite using Ariel’s Heart Song, Eric was still not completely in love with Vanessa and was still pining over real Ariel. I believe him saying “it would never work on him” is supposed to be irony/foreshadowing.
HEAL SONG
A potent siren tune more sharp than flat
Mends bruised wounds from scraps and bites from the bat--
Fighting poison to cleanse and to discard,
Restoring health through the melodic bard.
ERIC’S NOTES: “Hey! I wouldn’t mind this song one bit.”
Meanwhile, I believe the song Ariel sings to him on the beach is her “Heal Song”, a song that cures wounds and ailments.
Ariel does not know human anatomy. She might have books about certain things and knows humans can’t breathe underwater, but she does not know how to medically resuscitate a human, and her pats on Eric’s chest did absolutely nothing. It’s not until she sings does Eric actually come to and open his eyes.
There are several other reasons why I think it’s highly unlikely Ariel used her Heart Song (despite it just not making any sense). For one, Ariel clearly had no idea her interest in Eric was reciprocated when she came to land. She did not know he was out searching for her. And two, when Eric does run into the room and sees her for the first time, he is obviously disappointed because he thinks she’s just some stranger. He’s not “senselessly in love” as a Heart Song would lead him to be.
So I believe Ariel used her Heal Song to revive Eric from drowning, meanwhile Ursula tried to use a Heart Song to brainwash him into being in love with her. Just a tidbit I found interesting.
#i made this post for two reasons#1) bc its just interesting and i lOVE lore stuff#and 2) because i was watching a review and they said Ariel being a siren completely destroyed the story for them bc 'she brainwashed him'#and nope! thats not what happened!#i thought it was pretty obvious Ariel's singing healed Eric not bewitched him but alas#the little mermaid 2023#tlm#babbles#tlm live action

the reason that the ending of smile 2 is so effective is the same reason the ‘gordy’s home’ scene in NOPE is so effective,, you don’t see the actual horrific act of violence, you’re just left with the aftermath and it lets your brain fill in the in between
