growing up in Texas and then getting immersed in leftist discourse on this site is kinda funny because the former taught me to view someone saying "Yankee" as a reference to the side of the US Civil War that fought against slavery, and the context they said it in was usually pretty bigoted (as you would expect from people with a derisive term for "USAmericans against slavery"). but then it turns out the rest of the world uses "Yankee" in the British way, i.e. referring to the USA as a whole, and the context was more normal wholesome "death to America" type stuff. i don't think this fully clicked until i googled the etymology behind Yanqui U.X.O. and was like "ohhhhh"
