finally brave enough to say that venom snake unironically reads as a trans allegory to me. they're forced to take on the role of a man that they aren't, even being hypnotized to believe that that man is who they are, and the only reason they're being put through this is because other people perceive that man's role as a necessary role to be played. he's a symbol and an ideal, a strong, masculine leader, so it doesn't matter who venom snake is, as long as they can play that part well enough, no matter how much pain it causes them and others.
there's something very very trans about that scene of them looking at their reconstructed face in the mirror, and there's this. sense of wrongness that they can't explain. they look the way they're "supposed to", they've been convinced of their identity as big boss, but something within them knows that this isn't their face. this isn't them. but this is their part to play, at the expense of who they might've been.

Genuinely unsure if Texas would be weird about snakes (bog standard snake-hater opinion: derogatory) or weird about snakes (hyperfixation vibes, positive). If it's the latter, Houston, El Paso, and San Antonio 100% weaned him into it, but I do have to give consideration to the fact that I unfortunately share this state with a number of serpent-haters.

The Darling Lady
Managed to go out to my morel area and picked a few nice ones. Also encountered this very spicy garter snake lady, who was probably so spicy and snappy because she was very VERY pregnant. Even so, she took about five minutes looking on from a few meters back, and then her false biting at me a moment, and then scootin' off to the shelter of the creekbank a few more yard/meters away… Still, she was BEAUT!

Here is after she became a bit INCENSED at my presence. Most garter snakes in summer and fall, uh, don't behave so snappishly... which is mostly how I determine which of the spring garters I find might be possible momma sneks. You get ready to bite any and every a-hole if you got littles coming!
Lookit 'er flattenin' her head to look all vipery...
